- 1:15Dler The Silent Queen Matter, Parts three and four from Hollywood. It's time
- 1:22now for Johnny Dellar. Hi you boy, Vic Carson and Hartford say thanks
- 1:30for really opening up out there on the coast. Huh so your other papers.
- 1:34Quite a surprise learning that Mavis Gail was married to that Penny arcade operator
- 1:38Bonnie Slade. She'd been married to Tom Sandford, You're silent film actor.
- 1:42Only it turns out he and Slay are the same man. Really something,
- 1:45isn't it. Yeah, Well, here Sandford's supposed to be dead for twenty
- 1:49seven years, and all the time he's living down there in Ocean Park.
- 1:52And she didn't know about it, so she said, only somebody saw her
- 1:55hanging around the arcade two nights before Slade's murder. Vick, what well?
- 2:00What does she have to say about that? She wasn't around when the police
- 2:01went out to her place a little while ago. No one knows where she
- 2:05is. Look, have you been able to get an angle on those photographs
- 2:07of hers in slave's apartment? Why the killer drew those question marks over?
- 2:10No? And we haven't found out why the killer copped a half a dozen
- 2:15of the photos either photographs of whope? How should I know they're gone?
- 2:17Oh? Maybe they're important. No. Look, I'm on the trail of
- 2:20a carriacter. Call the preacher if I find him, I may find some
- 2:23answers. Well, according to the papers, Johnny, are you sore about
- 2:27something? Yeah, Vick, I'm sore. Better read my report tonight and
- 2:38every weekday night. Bob Bailey in the Transcribed Adventures of the Man with the
- 2:42Action Packed Expensive Coud, America's Fabulous Freelance insurance Investigator US Truly Johnny Dollar expense

- 3:13expense account continued Item nine fifty five cents one scotch and soda at a local
- 3:24pub. This was right after I'd talked with you, Vic. Yeah,
- 3:30I guess I was a little sore. Maybe it was because of that phone
- 3:34call earlier from Sergeant McKay when he told me that Old Times screen star Mayves
- 3:38Gale had been seen hanging around the arcade where Slade was murdered. Okay,
- 3:44so Mayvis Glee was in line to receive twenty five thousand dollars as the beneficiary
- 3:47of Slade's insurance policy. I suppose he figured I was itching to get something
- 3:52on her so the insurance company wouldn't have to pay off. I downed the
- 3:55rest of my drink and walked over to the penny arcade in the Ocean Park
- 3:59Amusement. So, Hi, you back again? Yeah, I'm back again,
- 4:04Twilight. If you're looking for sergeant McKay, you sure about what you
- 4:08told him that you saw Mavas Scale in here seven months ago. I'm sure
- 4:13recognize her picture in the morning paper. Well, you didn't volunteer this information
- 4:16of McKay until this afternoon. I sleep late. Okay, So Tuesday night
- 4:21Mava Scale showed up around h you said, Well, I couldn't swear to
- 4:26the time it was around. Then, Well, exactly what does she do?
- 4:29I told the sergeant, We'll tell me. When I first noticed her,
- 4:33she was standing just inside the front door, like maybe she was waiting
- 4:38for somebody. Was Barney here in the arcade at the time? Now,
- 4:41Barney was back there at that test your strength machine? It was busted.
- 4:45I was helping fixing. Oh I am mister Jesse evening, mister dollar evening,
- 4:48twilet, Hi, yeah, mister Dollar. Frank here's pretty good with
- 4:51electrical stuff. So I helped Barney fix the machine. Look, Twilight,
- 4:58I mean what happened then? What did Mavis do? Well? She waited
- 5:01around another ten minutes maybe and then beat it. Did Barney see her?
- 5:06Did he? Frank? You mean Mayvis? Gail was in here the ninety
- 5:10was fixing the machine. So Twyla says, do you think he noticed that?
- 5:14Mister Jess kind of hard for me to say, mister Dollar. We
- 5:16were both pretty busy fooling with that machine. I didn't notice her, that's
- 5:20for sure. Look, mister Dollar, don't you believe I saw this Gail
- 5:24Dane here? You need half a dozen witnesses. Okay, Twilett, don't
- 5:27get excited, Uh, Twyler, would I come in for me and grest
- 5:30are going to drive over to the mortuary spend a little time with Barney.
- 5:33I know you were there, Yeah, sure, sure, I'd like to
- 5:38go again, Frank, I'll get one of the boys to take over the
- 5:40change booth for an hour, so thanks, and be around eight, Well
- 5:44around Esa, Mine and mister Jess. I'd like to ask the two of
- 5:47you something. Sure, go ahead, I'm going to listen names here.
- 5:53Barney may have mentioned any one of them to you, now, stop me
- 5:56if he did, Mile, Martin, George Sheldon, Jarvis top huh yeah.
- 6:01Sergeant McKay already asked us. How about that fella called the freature too?
- 6:06We've never heard of him. Okay, thanks. I wandered around the
- 6:17pier for a while trying to figure out my next move. McKay wasn't around,
- 6:21and it was a since Mavias scale hadn't returned to a bel airs state,
- 6:26so the only thing I could do was to keep on trying to track
- 6:29down the men who'd been on that hunting trip twenty seven years ago with Tom
- 6:31Sandford alias Bonnie Slave. Milon Martin number one on the list hadn't been able
- 6:36to give out with anything exciting, but he had given me a five year
- 6:41old address on George Sheldon, number two on the list. Expense account had
- 6:45him ten fifteen cents cavvarn tips on the trail of George Shelton. It blew
- 6:48hot and cold until late that night when I wound up at a bar in
- 6:51downtown La. Yeah, Oh, George worked here for a handyman sort of.
- 7:01That was iw Harper, You said, right, what sort of?
- 7:05So your insurance investigator wouldn't be a cop? Maybe instead? No, now
- 7:14about George, Just wondering, as all, friend, what's he done you
- 7:19wanted for? I'd just like to talk to him, You sure, I'm
- 7:24sure it figures he wouldn't be getting into no trouble. Real sweet fellow,
- 7:30real sweet for a fellow who had it rough, and believe me, he
- 7:33had it rough. Used to be an actor, I know, and it
- 7:36real good. During the silence you understand, and along comes the talkies and
- 7:42Old George him having a voice three tones high, and the air raids hiring
- 7:46is out. It happened to a lot of them. Only for Old George.
- 7:50This coming on top of a busted romance. This is too much and
- 7:56he starts hitting the bottle and reading it sound what romance? Oh movie actress?
- 8:01She upmarried another guy, so her name wouldn't be Mavis. Scale would
- 8:07say, funny you asked that her name's all over the front pages you read
- 8:13the story. Do you mean that this is nah? N This wasn't the
- 8:16romance. Old George had a yen for some doll named Josephine Hinch or something
- 8:24like that. Hey, you wanting to talk with him? It got something
- 8:28to do with that penny arcade murder. Yeah, that's right now. Where
- 8:33can I find George Sheldon? Well, the address is seventeen twelve South Glendale
- 8:39Avenue, Glendy. Thanks another drink, no offin says, and I'll be
- 8:43on my wife. You know, I kind of miss old George since he
- 8:48left us. Yeah, sure, real sweep fellow. Yeah, kind of
- 8:50miss old Preacher too. The way he used to rant and raise, what
- 8:56did you say about the preacher? Old guy was a friend. Old George
- 9:03used to come in here, read him the riot act about he's drinking,
- 9:07wave his arms around and holla, what a minute? This preacher? What's
- 9:11his name? Have me seeing? A kind of screwy name? Ought to
- 9:16remember? Runs a rescue mission somewhere around here? What a fan? Help
- 9:22sure? Her name's pocket? Jarvis Pocket, right on the button flanks.
- 9:28This is your five bucks, my pleasure. Oh and fraying, since you've
- 9:31been so generous, Well that address I gave you on Old George, what
- 9:37about it? We'll save yourself the trip. It's a cemetery. Old George
- 9:41has been dead for a couple of years. Jarvis Pocket had been number three
- 9:48on my list of the men who'd gone on that hunting trip twenty seven years
- 9:52ago, and someone had tried to murder Tom Sandford but got killed instead.
- 9:56Now that it turned out he was also the preacher I'd been looking for,
- 10:00could turn into a big break. Expense account items eleven and twelve six dollars
- 10:03even tipped to above mentioned bartender and campfire around La skid Roll looking for the
- 10:07rescue mission. It was a neat looking affair. All the lights in the
- 10:11main hall were on, and as usual, the place was open for business
- 10:13weekend. You shall find my brother the way of the Lord. For along
- 10:20that way that was a good crowd. On hand. I eized into a
- 10:24seat alongside a bluary eyed pilgrim who wreaked a bed share his life. I
- 10:28looked around the bottom of the barrel. Was here venture sins and put down?
- 10:35The brothers were listening to the good man up front, but they weren't
- 10:37really tuned in. They were just waiting for a bowl of soup and a
- 10:41place to flop. P Peace, my brothers, in Him alone is your
- 10:46salvation and your hope of everlasting life. Open your hearts to eternal joy,
- 10:54and the glory shall be yours. We will now sing heave numbers. When
- 11:03the singing was over, I got caught in the crush, and the next
- 11:07thing I knew, I was holding a bowl of little soup in my hand,
- 11:09and I realized I hadn't eaten all day. Meanwhile, I kept my
- 11:13eye on brother pocket and waited for a chance to get to him along.
- 11:16That happened about five minutes later. When he walked out, I followed him
- 11:18down a long, dark corridor and into his office. Please sit down,
- 11:24young man. Thanks. My name is Johnny Dollar, brother Pocket. I'm
- 11:31an insurance investigator. Oh, frankly, I thought you were a policeman when
- 11:37I saw you out there seated with my flock. Been expecting the law.
- 11:39Yes, excuse me, I knew they'd be coming around sooner or later.
- 11:46Regarding that long friendship of mine, Barney Slave, Yeah, because all the
- 11:50way back to the days he was known as Tom Sanford when you directed silent
- 11:54films. Check check how long have you known Tom was alive using the name
- 11:58of oh, mister Dollar, I was witnessed to that horrible affair that took
- 12:03place during that hunting trip twenty seven years ago. Somehow, during the course
- 12:09of that day's hunt, I became separated from the others. Then suddenly I
- 12:13came upon Tom struggling with a man in a deep ravine. I would be
- 12:18killing a man with a shotgun. The other man fell, the gun went
- 12:22off, and he was killed instead of town go on, brother Pocket.
- 12:28Immediately I told Tom we should find the others, tell them what had happened.
- 12:33That he would have none of it. Is that when he told you.
- 12:35He preferred to let the world believe he was dead, and I suddenly
- 12:39realized that probably would be best for all concerned. In what way? Well,
- 12:45mister Dollar, Tom was constantly involved in trouble, some kind of drinking,
- 12:50too much, gambling, women, brawling. He knew what it was
- 12:54all doing to Mayvies, but he couldn't help himself. Leave me, mister
- 12:58Dollar, He loved passionately made her life miserable in his own as well.
- 13:05I see a brother Pocket about the would be killing. I know, I
- 13:09know what you're going to ask the name of the man that tried to kill
- 13:11Tom? Yeah, you know him? Oh? Yes, he should it
- 13:13Tom? Only the two of us knew his identity. You're forgetting someone else,
- 13:18m the person who hired him, hired mister Donald. It makes you
- 13:24think he was hired. So maybe I'm wrong, am I? I was
- 13:30never quite certain myself. Did Tom think he was Oh no, no,
- 13:35no, definitely no, at least as far as Mayvia Scale was quite right?
- 13:39Did you share his opinion, brother Pocket, I said before, I
- 13:43could never quite make up my mind. Well why not? Did you think
- 13:48maybe Scale in capable of doing such a thing, hiring someone to kill off
- 13:52Tom No, I'd rather not say. Okay, okay. So who was
- 13:56the man who tried to murder Tom? What was his name? I'm afraid
- 14:01it'll mean little to you, mister Dollar. His name was Joe Fallon.
- 14:07You're right, means nothing on this fact, however, might prove interesting to
- 14:11you. Joe Fallon at one time had been Mavis Jale's personal chauffeur. Johnny
- 14:35Dollar, Oh it's you, hi, Sergeant Headquarters just gave me this number
- 14:39to call. I was wondering, who'd be in Barney Slade's apartment? How'd
- 14:41you get in with a key? Brother? Pocket? Had it? Give
- 14:45me that again? Jarvis Pockett, He's one of the men on that hunting
- 14:48trip with Tom Sandford twenty seven years ago. He's here with me now.
- 14:50How'd he get it the key? Barney had given it to him a few
- 14:54years back. He's known all along that Barney Slade and Tom Sandford were one
- 14:56and the same. He also knows the the name of the man who tried
- 15:00to kill Sandford? Who was it? Name was Joe Fallon? At one
- 15:03time he'd been Mavis Gayle's private chauffeur. Expense account submitted by Special Investigator Johnny
- 15:18Dollar location Ocean Park, California to State Unity Life Home Office, Hartford,
- 15:22conneting an assignment the Silent Queen Meta expenserc count continued. Locating brother Jarvis Pocket,
- 15:33who now ran a rescue mission along LA's skid row, had been the
- 15:37only real break I'd had in the case so far, At least I hoped
- 15:41it would be. The one time film director of the Silent Era had often
- 15:45visited with his old friend Tom Sandford alias Barney Slade might put us on the
- 15:50track of Slade's killer. I watched brother Pocket as he paced back and forth
- 15:54across the small room, scratching his chin thoughtfully, glancing up at the blank
- 15:58spaces in the wall with photographs have been He was still pacing the room on
- 16:03started to McKay r. How about it, mister Pocket. As I told
- 16:07mister Dollar, sergeant, I'm positive that this entire wall was covered with photographs.
- 16:12Uh huh, And now there are several missing. Were they photographs of
- 16:18some particular star? Oh? No, no action shots made during the filming
- 16:23of a picture that I directed from his care You see what was the title
- 16:29of that? Or maybe that is an important brother pocket Horse. Wait a
- 16:32moment Yes, it was called Dangerous Little Node Dangerous Lovers That George Sheldon starred
- 16:40with Mavis in that one was Tom Sandford in the too, Oh Tom,
- 16:44he has the best role he ever had. How about the next row pictures
- 16:48a photograph of Mavis and Tom? I believe I can't recall the title of
- 16:52that film, A dreadful thing. Francis Trevellian talked them into it and directed
- 16:59it too, And you should have stayed behind the camera where he belonged.
- 17:02In the bottom row, were they photographs of Tom Sandford and Mavis Gale?
- 17:04Yes, yes, I'm certain of it. That pictures brother pocketing. Would
- 17:08you say that Tom had changed much since those photographs were made? Not too
- 17:14much, nor put on a bit of weight, hair turned gray, of
- 17:18course. Seaning on top, we'd grown a small mustache too. How about
- 17:22it, Sang? You'll notice there isn't another photograph of Tom Sandford left on
- 17:25that wall. Okay, So assuming the killer took these away because they might
- 17:29identify Barnie as Tom Sandford link him with Mavis Scale. Yes, Yet the
- 17:33killer went to the trouble of drawing red question marks over the other photographs of
- 17:37Mavis Scale to deliberately draw attention to her. Why Lavis Scale would have been
- 17:41involved anyway to a certain extent, After all, she is the beneficiary of
- 17:45slave's insurance. Polisher, Sure, but suppose the killer wasn't aware of that
- 17:49twenty five thousand dollars. I believe the amounts, that's right. And you're
- 17:55wondering why he did it? Oh, I can make a guess. You
- 17:59said, even pretty reckless tossed a lot of Mayva Scale's money around in the
- 18:02old days. May have amounted to something close to twenty five thousand. This
- 18:07may have been his way of scrying the account twenty five thousand bucks in a
- 18:11king size shock. He could hardly be expected to guess that his death would
- 18:15come about under these circumstances, mister Doll, No, no, but he
- 18:18could have passed away calmly in his sleep some night and wouldn't have changed the
- 18:22thing, Brother Pucket. Mayv Scale would still have been curious about a man
- 18:26named Barney Slay. Yes, I suppose. Yes, he must have been
- 18:30pretty sure she'd recognize him, that it would make a nice big splash in
- 18:33all the papers. Was he that much of a ham? I'm afraid so
- 18:40he couldn't have loved Mayva Scale, Oh, mister Dollar, right to the
- 18:44last years. Still he couldn't resist the magnificent gesture, the big payoff,
- 18:48returning her twenty five thousand. You know something, Dollar, now, you
- 18:52sound like you're on her side. Well, gentlemenly, if that's all you
- 18:56want me for, I think I had best be getting back to my quarter
- 19:00at the mission. The flock may be getting a little wrestless. H You
- 19:03know how it is. There are times one of the brothers will sneak a
- 19:07bottle of sherry into the dormitory and things become quite gay. Sure, mister
- 19:11Pocket, you can run along and thanks, good night. Good Then,
- 19:19well, Sajan, what's the next move? What about this Joe Fallon?
- 19:23You said he'd been Mavis Gail chauffeur at one time. Yeah, Pocket saw
- 19:29the whole thing. The attempt to kill Tom Sandford twenty seven years ago,
- 19:33Falon and Sandford were struggling. A shot went off and Fallen got it full
- 19:37in the face. Sandford then decided to play dead. Yep. But ever
- 19:41since then Sandford was hiding out down here under the name of Barnie Slaton,
- 19:45that is, until somebody caught up to him, caught on to it three
- 19:48nights ago, and killed him. Big question still remains, Who come on,
- 19:53let's get out of here. I'll get it. Yeah, uh right,
- 20:03I got it. That was headquarters. They just got a call from
- 20:07Francis Trevillian Pavilion. He was one of the men on that hunting trip,
- 20:10along with Pocket and the others. Yeah, seems Mayvis Gaale just heard.
- 20:12We've been wanting to ask us some questions. She wants us to come right
- 20:15over. She's a Trevillian's beach house in Malibu. The beach house turned out
- 20:22to be one of those super modern jobs, low sprawling with a lot of
- 20:26glass and flagstone. The butler allowed us through the front door, and after
- 20:30a nice little stroll, we finally arrived at the den, a fifty foot
- 20:33or at least with a bar one end. Mavis and a tall, distinguished
- 20:37looking gentleman were at the other Good Evening, Miss Gail, Good Evening,
- 20:42Sergeantine. Terribly sorry about all this. I didn't know you wanted to talk
- 20:48with me. I should have left word at the house, I suppose,
- 20:51but I was so upset anxious to get away. I understand. Oh,
- 20:56this is Francis Trevillion, Sergeant McCain, mister Dollar, we met at the
- 21:00funeral home. Oh, yes, I remember. Do sit down, gentlemen.
- 21:07May I offer you a drink? No, thanks, mister Trevillian.
- 21:12Now, Miss Gail. Yes, when I first informed you of Barney Slade's
- 21:17death at the Penny Arcade at Ocean Park, you told me you never met
- 21:21the man. That's right. I had no way of knowing it was Tom,
- 21:25not until last night when I went to the mortuary. Had you ever
- 21:29been in or near the Penny Arcade at any time, miss Gail, previous
- 21:32to the murder, Yes, two nights before. Why didn't you mention this
- 21:38to me when I spoke with you before? I don't know. I was
- 21:44frightened. A man named Barney Slade had been murdered. The killer had drawn
- 21:49question marks on my photographs in the dead man's apartment. Were you afraid to
- 21:53tell me because it would involve you deeper? Yes? I think that was
- 21:57the purpose of the phone calls? What phone call? That evening? Shortly
- 22:03after six I received a call from a man he wouldn't identify himself. He
- 22:07said that a very dear, very old friend of mine was in trouble and
- 22:11needed my help. He instructed you to go to the Arcade Ocean Park.
- 22:15I was to be there by eight o'clock and his old friend was to make
- 22:18himself known to me. So you went, Did you see anyone? No
- 22:23one I recognized, Miss Gail. Does the name Joe Fallon mean anything to
- 22:29you? Fallon? Why do you ask that? Just a moment, mister
- 22:33Trevanion. Why? Yes, Joe was my chauffeur many many years ago.
- 22:38And when did you discharge him? Shortly after my marriage to Tom? Did
- 22:45he tell you to get rid of Fallen? Yes? Yes, he didn't
- 22:48like mister Dollar. May I ask you why you're questioning, Miss Gailee about
- 22:52Joe Fallon because we just found out he's the man who tried to murder Tom
- 22:56Sant for twenty seven years ago? What you mean he was the man killed
- 23:03man we all thought was tough? That's right? Was Joe Fallon in love
- 23:07with you? And now see better? Answer? Was he? Miss Gail?
- 23:12I I don't know what are you two driving at? And Sergeant I
- 23:18insist on knowing, And I'd like to know why you jump when I first
- 23:21mentioned Joe Fallon's name, Mister Trevanion, all right, all right, I'll
- 23:23tell you. You see, i'd quite forgotten about him. It was only
- 23:30when you asked Miss Gaile that it suddenly dawned on me who he was.
- 23:33And it startled me because his name had been brought to my attention only some
- 23:37twenty four hours ago a phone call a man who said he was in partnership
- 23:42with Joe Fellon. They had a business deal to take over with me and
- 23:48well, I simply told him I wasn't interested. I was missed my most
- 23:51important production and I just couldn't be bothered. Did you receive a similar call,
- 23:53Miss Gale? I know, you know, Sergeant. I'll give you
- 23:56words. It's the same one who call Miss Gail before the murder to get
- 24:00it down to the penny arcade. But I don't understand why who is the
- 24:03man. When we find that out in scale, we'll have the killer.
- 24:18Here's your hotel dollar. Oh yeah, right, thanks? In a long
- 24:23day, hasn't it? Sure? Has? We haven't made much progress?
- 24:29At least Brother Pocket was some help. Yeah, thanks, Yeah, Pocket
- 24:36gave us a couple of answers. I get sure you use a lot more.
- 24:41Thanks, you know, Sargeant. That bit about the photograph still bothers
- 24:48me. Why would the killer first try to hide the link between Mayvis Scale
- 24:52and Tom Sanford and then deliberately draw attention to her. You think someone beside
- 24:57the killer could have made those questions? Arks on her photographs could be okay?
- 25:03For instance, who discovered the body? Twila James? Okay, you
- 25:08mean she walks in, discovers the body, picks up red crayon, does
- 25:11the art job? Why? Well, look, I just make these things
- 25:15up. I don't explain them. You're off the beama in this one,
- 25:19Johnny. When we got to Bidey's place, she was shaken like a ship
- 25:22without a rudder. She was scared, silly. I'd still like to ask
- 25:26her about it, though, Better get some sleep, dollar, I guess,
- 25:32thanks for the lift, Sergeant Night. Yeah, the sergeant was probably
- 25:37right about Twina. But I sonded on down to the amusement zone. Anyway,
- 25:42It was late and the place was folding up. There was a nice
- 25:45warm breeze blowing into the sea. That I was gone, so I continued
- 25:49along the ocean front. It crossed over into Venice and kept right on going.
- 25:53The old canals and the bridges look more sad and for long than ever
- 25:57in the pail more night, with the sea and the background adding its lonely
- 26:00rhythm of sound. The shot had come from somewhere over by the canals.
- 26:06Then I saw the man on the bridge, staggering, weaving like a drunk.

- 26:30then along the canal, and then I lost him. I pulled up on
- 26:37the bank of the canal, looking around, listen nothing. Then suddenly something

- 29:00is shaping up to be one of the better Johnny Dollar cereals, and I

- 29:11parts, because we've got a very puzzling mystery, particularly those contradictory clues at
- 29:18the crime scene. Myself, I don't remember exactly how this one turns out,
