• 0:43
facts along the way. Whether you're a huge Pokémon
• 0:46
fan or just getting started, there's something here for
• 0:49
everyone. Let's start at the beginning.
• 0:52
Pokémon are creatures from a video game series that begins in
• 0:55
Japan in 1996. The word Pokémon is short for
• 0:59
Pocket Monsters, and the games were designed so players could
• 1:03
catch, train, and battle with these creatures.
• 1:06
Over the years, Pokémon became much more than just video games.
• 1:10
There are trading cards, TV shows, movies, toys, and even
• 1:14
mobile apps like Pokémon Go. Today, Pokémon is one of the
• 1:18
biggest entertainment franchises in the world.
• 1:21
Now you might be wondering, with over 1000 different Pokémon,
• 1:25
which ones are the most popular? It's a great question and the
• 1:28
answer is actually a mix of fan poles, sales numbers, and how
• 1:32
often they appear in the games and shows.
• 1:35
Let's meet some of the most famous Pokémon ever.
• 1:38
First up, Pikachu. Pikachu is by far the most
• 1:42
recognizable Pokémon. Pikachu is a small yellow mouse
• 1:46
like creature with pointy ears and a tail shaped like a
• 1:49
lightning bolt. Pikachu is known for generating
• 1:52
electricity and is often seen using its famous move
• 1:56
Thunderbolt. Pikachu became the mascot of
• 1:59
Pokémon and is featured in almost every game show and
• 2:03
movie. In fact, Pikachu is so popular
• 2:07
that you can find Pikachu plush toys in toy stores all over the
• 2:10
world. There are even Pikachu themed
• 2:13
airplanes in Japan. Did you know that Pikachu was
• 2:16
almost not chosen as the mascot? In the early days, another
• 2:20
Pokémon called Clefairy was considered, but Pikachu's bright
• 2:24
color and friendly face won everyone over.
• 2:27
  Next, let's talk about Charizard.
• 2:30
Charizard is a fire and flying type Pokémon that looks like a
• 2:33
big orange dragon. Even though Charizard is not a
• 2:36
dragon type Pokémon in the main games, many people think of it
• 2:40
as a dragon because of its wings and ability to breathe fire.
• 2:43
Charizard evolves from Charmander, the fire type
• 2:46
starter Pokémon from the very first games.
• 2:49
Many players choose Charmander because they want to end up with
• 2:52
a powerful Charizard. Charizard's popularity is also
• 2:56
huge in the Pokémon Trading Card game.
• 2:59
The original Charizard card is one of the most valuable Pokémon
• 3:02
cards ever, and some have sold for thousands of dollars.
• 3:06
That's a lot of allowance money. Another top favorite is EVEV is
• 3:11
a normal type Pokémon that is famous for its ability to evolve
• 3:14
into many different forms in the games.
• 3:17
If you give EV certain items or level it up in special ways, it
• 3:21
can turn into different Pokémon like Vaporion, Water type,
• 3:24
Jolteon, Electric type, Flarion, fire type, and more.
• 3:29
Because of all these possibilities, fans love EV.
• 3:32
In fact, in the game Pokémon Let's Go, EV Evie is one of the
• 3:37
  main partners. Just like Pikachu.
• 3:39
Let's not forget about Mute Whoa.
• 3:42
Mute Whoa is a legendary psychic type Pokémon.
• 3:45
In the Pokémon world, Legendary Pokémon are rare and extremely
• 3:50
powerful. Mute Whoa was created in a
• 3:52
laboratory by scientists, and it first appeared in the very first
• 3:56
Pokémon movie. Mute Whoa is known for its
• 3:59
mysterious look and incredible psychic abilities.
• 4:02
Many players remember how difficult it was to catch Mute
• 4:05
Woe in the original games, making it a favorite for those
• 4:08
who love a challenge. Now, let's talk about Snorlax.
• 4:12
Snorlax is a huge, sleepy Pokémon that is famous for
• 4:16
blocking roads in the games. In order to get past Snorlax,
• 4:20
players need to play a special flute to wake it up.
• 4:22
Snorlax is known for its massive size and love of sleeping, but
• 4:26
in battle it can be very tough because of its high health
• 4:29
points. Snorlax has become a favorite
• 4:32
for fans who enjoy its laid back attitude and powerful moves.
• 4:36
Lucario is another Pokémon that has gained a lot of fans.
• 4:40
Lucario is a fighting and steel type Pokémon that looks a bit
• 4:43
like a Jackal or a wolf. Lucario is known for its speed,
• 4:48
strength, and the ability to use Aura, which is a kind of energy
• 4:51
that it can sense and use in battle.
• 4:54
Lucario has appeared in several Pokémon movies and is even a
• 4:57
playable character in the Super Smash Brothers series, which is
• 5:01
another popular video game. Greninja is a water and dark
• 5:05
type Pokémon that looks like a ninja frog.
• 5:07
Greninja is popular because of its cool design and strong
• 5:11
abilities. In the Pokémon anime, Ash's
• 5:14
Greninja became very famous for its special form called Ash
• 5:18
Greninja, showing a unique bond between Trainer and Pokémon.
• 5:22
Greninja was even voted the most popular Pokémon in a worldwide
• 5:26
poll held by The Pokémon Company in 2020.
• 5:30
Of course, we can't leave out Bulbasaur and Squirtle.
• 5:34
Bulbasaur is a grass and poison type Pokémon and Squirtle is a
• 5:38
water type. They were the other two starter
• 5:40
Pokémon from the original game, along with Charmander.
• 5:44
Many fans have a soft spot for these Pokémon because they were
• 5:47
some of the very first they ever caught.
• 5:49
Bulbasaur is known for the plant bulb on its back, which later
• 5:53
grows into a huge flower when it evolves into Venusaur.
• 5:57
Squirtle is a cute turtle Pokémon that evolves into the
• 6:00
powerful Blastoise, which has water cannons on a shell.
• 6:04
Jengar is a ghost and poison type Pokémon that looks like a
• 6:07
purple shadow with a big grin. Jengar is known for its
• 6:11
mischievous personality and spooky abilities in battles.
• 6:15
Jengar is very fast and can use a wide range of moves, making it
• 6:19
a favorite for players who like tricky strategies.
• 6:22
Let's talk a little about Legendary Pokémon, since they're
• 6:25
often among the most popular. Besides Mute Woe, there's also
• 6:29
Ray Kwaza, a dragon and flying type Pokémon that looks like a
• 6:33
giant green serpent. Rayquaza is famous for its role
• 6:37
in stopping conflicts between other Legendary Pokémon.
• 6:40
Then there's Lygia, A psychic and flying type Pokémon known as
• 6:44
the Guardian of the Seas, and Ho, a fire and flying type
• 6:48
Pokémon said to bring happiness to those who see it.
• 6:51
These Legendary Pokémon often appear on the covers of games
• 6:55
and are the stars of movies, which makes them extra special
• 6:58
to fans. Did you know that Pokémon
• 7:00
popularity can change over time? Sometimes, a new game or show
• 7:04
will make a certain Pokémon more popular.
• 7:07
For example, when the game Pokémon Geo was released in
• 7:10
2016, Pokémon like Magikarp and Garridos became more popular
• 7:15
because they were fun to catch and evolve in the game.
• 7:18
And when the Pokémon Sword and Shield games came out, new
• 7:21
Pokémon like Korvanite and Dragapult became favorites among
• 7:25
new fans. Another interesting fact is that
• 7:28
some Pokémon are especially popular in certain countries.
• 7:31
For example, Alchemy, a cream themed Pokémon, is very popular
• 7:36
in Europe because people there love desserts and sweets.
• 7:39
In Japan, Pokémon like Far Fetched, which is based on a
• 7:43
Japanese saying about ducks and green onions, are local
• 7:46
  favorites. Some Pokémon become popular
• 7:49
because of memes or jokes on the Internet.
• 7:52
For example, Sidek, a duck like Pokémon that always seems
• 7:55
confused, became famous because of its funny expressions in the
• 7:59
TV show and movies. People love sharing pictures and
• 8:03
videos of Sidek online. You might be wondering how
• 8:06
Pokémon popularity is measured. The Pokémon Company sometimes
• 8:10
holds official polls where fans around the world can vote for
• 8:14
their favorites. They also look at how many times
• 8:16
a Pokémon appears in TV shows, movies, and trading cards, as
• 8:20
well as which ones sell the most toys and merchandise.
• 8:23
Even the number of times a Pokémon is picked in competitive
• 8:26
battles can be a clue to how popular it is.
• 8:29
Let's talk about what makes a Pokémon popular.
• 8:32
Sometimes it's because of their design.
• 8:34
Pokémon that look cute, cool, or powerful often become favorites.
• 8:39
Sometimes it's because of their abilities in battle.
• 8:42
If a Pokémon is strong or has a unique move, players might use
• 8:46
it more often, and sometimes it's because of their role in
• 8:50
the story. If a Pokémon is important to the
• 8:52
main character or has a big moment in a movie, fans are more
• 8:56
likely to remember it. Did you know that The Pokémon
• 8:59
Company creates new Pokémon for each new game?
• 9:02
This keeps the series fresh and exciting, and it gives fans new
• 9:06
favorites to discover. Some of the newer popular
• 9:08
Pokémon include Tinkitin, a fairy and steel type Pokémon
• 9:12
from the Scarlet and Violet games, and Spigotito, a grass
• 9:16
type starter from the same games.
• 9:19
Pokémon popularity also leads to some fun events.
• 9:23
For example, in Japan, there are Pokémon Centers, which are
• 9:26
  stores filled with Pokémon merchandise.
• 9:29
Sometimes special events are held where fans can meet people
• 9:32
dressed as Pikachu or get exclusive toys.
• 9:36
In other countries, big tournaments are held where
• 9:39
players can battle each other using their favorite Pokémon.
• 9:42
You might have noticed that some Pokémon are especially popular
• 9:45
among younger kids, while others are favorites for older fans.
• 9:50
For example, Pokémon like Pikachu, Evie, and Jigglypuff
• 9:53
are often loved by younger kids because they're cute and easy to
• 9:57
recognize. Older fans might prefer Pokémon
• 10:00
like Lucario, Garchomp, or Salomons because of their strong
• 10:04
abilities in battle. There's also a group of Pokémon
• 10:07
called Starter Pokémon Grab. Your breakfast feelings fine
• 10:12
  adventures waiting. Don't be late.
• 10:15
  Today's the day we see.
