- 0:21Speaker 1: Well, this is Kevin Sports very daily here on a
- 0:23Speaker 1: radio Folkstone for the Folkston and Hive Sports Show. Well,
- 0:31Speaker 1: with a festive season approaching, some of our local sports
- 0:34Speaker 1: take a season seasonal break, such as hockey and rugby.
- 0:38Speaker 1: They won't be back until January the tenth, when hockey
- 0:42Speaker 1: won't the rugby You've got a game this week. Football
- 0:45Speaker 1: season will carry on. Part run certainly keeps going, and
- 0:56Speaker 1: I'll be telling you all about an event that's on
- 0:58Speaker 1: December twenty sixth as it enters its forty ninth birthday.
- 1:02Speaker 1: It's the Salt Word Boxing Day Fun Run. Now. Race
- 1:06Speaker 1: director Greg Borman was scheduled to come in today, but
- 1:09Speaker 1: unfortunately he's gone down with a cuff and a sore throat,
- 1:11Speaker 1: so well soon Gregy can't make it. So I shall
- 1:14Speaker 1: be recapping some of the charities that have benefited from
- 1:18Speaker 1: this three miles of mud heels and hangover cure. Well,
- 1:29Speaker 1: we've also got news of the Boxing Day dip along
- 1:32Speaker 1: the Sunny Sands. There's two crazy charity fundraising events that
- 1:36Speaker 1: have been going on for years now. Before I come
- 1:44Speaker 1: out and looked at the weather forecast, and I don't
- 1:46Speaker 1: think I've ever seen this on the BBC website it
- 1:49Speaker 1: said one hundred percent precipitation. Now, just as you're you
- 1:55Speaker 1: all up, here's a song from the Eurhythmics is called
- 1:58Speaker 1: here Comes the Rain Again Eurhythmics nineteen eighty four. It
- 2:40Speaker 1: comes to rain again, And that's what the BBC is saying. Anyway.
- 2:45Speaker 1: I don't think it's going to be a white Christmas,
- 2:47Speaker 1: more of a silky wet Christmas, unfortunately, But you can
- 2:51Speaker 1: never tell with the weather forecast. I mean sometimes you
- 2:55Speaker 1: look at the weather forecasting, Oh it's going to be
- 2:56Speaker 1: pouring down a rain, and then the next day it
- 2:59Speaker 1: totally changes then't it. So who do you believe? Anyway?
- 3:03Speaker 1: Are you ready for christmasse? I'm not, you know what,
- 3:06Speaker 1: I've hardly started. I popped into Morrison's this morning. I
- 3:10Speaker 1: was about our past eight. I can't believe it might
- 3:13Speaker 1: even been earlier than that, and luckily the shelves were
- 3:17Speaker 1: full up. So I did a bit of Christmas food chopping,
- 3:19Speaker 1: so I don't starve over Christmas, but do a bit
- 3:24Speaker 1: of spork, shall we? And I think we should start
- 3:26Speaker 1: with football as we normally do. So we're going to
- 3:28Speaker 1: start with folks in Victor. Now they are certainly in
- 3:31Speaker 1: top form as we near the end of twenty twenty five.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Now a lot of managers are asked at the start
- 3:37Speaker 1: of the season, how do you think you're going to do?
- 3:38Speaker 1: You're going to win the league, you know you're going
- 3:40Speaker 1: to finish the midway and the stock answer is normally, well,
- 3:44Speaker 1: let's wait until Christmas and see how the league tables look.
- 3:47Speaker 1: We're going into Christmas this year. In Victor our top
- 3:50Speaker 1: of the table. Last Saturday they made the trip to
- 3:53Speaker 1: Dartford who were fourth at the time. That being a
- 3:56Speaker 1: Kent Darby it always adds a bit of spice to
- 3:58Speaker 1: the game, doesn't it. With them? Well, there was a
- 4:00Speaker 1: few players there was the former co manager Rowland Edge
- 4:04Speaker 1: Edgy as he's known. He was on the Dartford bench
- 4:07Speaker 1: in the opposition management team, and two former players goalie
- 4:11Speaker 1: Johnny Henley and striker Dan Smith, who are facing last
- 4:15Speaker 1: year's former teammates. In Victor went one nil up at halftime,
- 4:19Speaker 1: at the goal coming from Joe Piggot. Then Aida Yusuf
- 4:22Speaker 1: came on and only minutes after his arrival he scored
- 4:25Speaker 1: from the spot after being brought down in the box
- 4:29Speaker 1: in the It was a bit of a tense finish
- 4:31Speaker 1: though in the eighty eighth minute, Samir Carruthers scored a
- 4:34Speaker 1: scorch in twenty five yarder. There was a free kick,
- 4:37Speaker 1: but there wasn't enough time for Dartford to find that equalizer,
- 4:41Speaker 1: so the final score was at Dartford one hosted in Victor. Two.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Tuesday evening saw fourteenth placed at Cray Valley paper Mills
- 4:50Speaker 1: visit the alkal line and only to find in Victor
- 4:53Speaker 1: once again on top four. They went on to win
- 4:56Speaker 1: the game at three goals to nil. Now this puts
- 4:59Speaker 1: in Victor eleven points ahead of second place Brentwood with
- 5:02Speaker 1: a game in hand, and they've been unbeaten for ten games,
- 5:06Speaker 1: so halfway through the season. Not too bad, is it.
- 5:10Speaker 1: Next up is a home game on Saturday against Canby Island,
- 5:13Speaker 1: and then on the twenty seventh. This is the sort
- 5:15Speaker 1: of games over the festive period. On the twenty seventh
- 5:18Speaker 1: another Kent derby, This is a way to Ramsgate and
- 5:22Speaker 1: the first game of twenty twenty six is a home
- 5:25Speaker 1: fixture another Kent derby against Chatham on January third. Now
- 5:31Speaker 1: in the NLG Kent County League, it was a good
- 5:33Speaker 1: day for our two local teams. Hawkins traveled away to
- 5:37Speaker 1: Bexley and came home as seven to one winners, whilst
- 5:40Speaker 1: New Romney played in the Kent Intermediate Challenge Shield with
- 5:43Speaker 1: a two to one home win over Kent United after
- 5:46Speaker 1: going one kneel down. This result puts them into the
- 5:48Speaker 1: semi final. This coming Saturday, Hawkins have another league fixture,
- 5:52Speaker 1: this time away to Cuxton FC, which means a trip
- 5:55Speaker 1: to Rochester and New Romney find themselves are chasing even
- 5:59Speaker 1: more silver with an away fixture into in the Interregional
- 6:03Speaker 1: Challenge Cup, and this is against the team which, let's
- 6:08Speaker 1: face it, never heard of, Equinochial FC, their top of
- 6:12Speaker 1: Division one West, so this will mean a trip to
- 6:15Speaker 1: Southeast London. New Romney are currently thirteenth out of nineteen
- 6:19Speaker 1: teams in the Premier League and they've been a good
- 6:22Speaker 1: form lately after a poor start. But Equinochial FC are
- 6:26Speaker 1: sitting on top of their division having only lost one
- 6:28Speaker 1: game all season, so this has the makings of a
- 6:31Speaker 1: really close game. On the twenty seventh of December, Hawkins,
- 6:35Speaker 1: you're at home to long Lane who traveled down from
- 6:38Speaker 1: Kidbrookney Greenwich and New Romney currently don't have a fixture,
- 6:43Speaker 1: well what I can find at the moment the first
- 6:47Speaker 1: games of twenty twenty six. See you're both clubs in
- 6:49Speaker 1: action on the third of January when Hawkins are away
- 6:52Speaker 1: to Kingshill and New Romney are at home to Snodland
- 6:56Speaker 1: Town Reserves, both games in the league. So turning our
- 7:00Speaker 1: attentions to Hive Town now, well they didn't have a
- 7:02Speaker 1: game last Saturday is their opponents were in cup action
- 7:06Speaker 1: and results elsewhere didn't do them any favors. It didn't
- 7:09Speaker 1: go their way. They now sits in bottom of the
- 7:12Speaker 1: league and this week they are at home to Stansfield
- 7:15Speaker 1: who are just one place above them, so this really
- 7:18Speaker 1: is a must win game for Hive. Their fixture on
- 7:22Speaker 1: the twenty seventh of December is at home to Hollins
- 7:24Speaker 1: and Blair. Then on the third of January it's a
- 7:27Speaker 1: way to Larkefield and New Hive So that's a bit
- 7:31Speaker 1: of a local round up of the football. So if
- 7:35Speaker 1: you do like your football over the festive period, and
- 7:38Speaker 1: it's normally games on Boxing Days and there on January
- 7:40Speaker 1: the first, but that seems to have been sideswiped this
- 7:43Speaker 1: year for some reason. But whatever you do before you
- 7:45Speaker 1: travel and the just check social media or the Internet
- 7:50Speaker 1: just to make sure that the games are still going
- 7:53Speaker 1: on at the places that they say. With all this
- 7:56Speaker 1: rain about, there could be a few cancelations orsponments if
- 8:01Speaker 1: you haven't got a three G pitch, which folks that
- 8:03Speaker 1: now have the benefit of. So please check the internet
- 8:08Speaker 1: or social media before you travel. Okay, now this one,
- 8:12Speaker 1: I love this one. This is nineteen seventy one. Now
- 8:16Speaker 1: this is a great track that I love it, and
- 8:19Speaker 1: I think Eric Clapton was the lead singer of this lot.
- 8:22Speaker 1: And do you know what missus Ferret is trying to
- 8:24Speaker 1: talk me in to go and see him. He's at
- 8:27Speaker 1: saundering him up in Norfolk there not till August. So
- 8:31Speaker 1: I'm sitting on the fence a little bit. But are
- 8:33Speaker 1: these artists really as good what you picture them in
- 8:36Speaker 1: their heyday? Anyway, let's sit back and enjoy the dulcic
- 8:40Speaker 1: tones of Derek and the Dominoes and Layla. I've got
- 8:55Speaker 1: a bit of local or rugby news now. Folks from
- 8:58Speaker 1: Verse fifteen had an excellent home Vic over Old Alanians
- 9:02Speaker 1: by forty points to twenty one, keeping them in fourth place.
- 9:06Speaker 1: This Saturday, their last game of twenty twenty five sees
- 9:09Speaker 1: a trip to near Maidstone where they face a tough
- 9:11Speaker 1: game against fifth place Alsford Balls. They have a break
- 9:16Speaker 1: then until the tenth of January when they welcome Midway
- 9:19Speaker 1: second fifteen to the Burlington Fields. Now, the second team
- 9:23Speaker 1: on paper had forty points to niil a defeat against
- 9:27Speaker 1: a Lee of rugby club and this score, this score
- 9:30Speaker 1: always rings alarm bells with me. I'll check the England
- 9:33Speaker 1: Rugby site and it was actually a home walkover win.
- 9:37Speaker 1: So the score automatically goes to forty points to kneel. Now,
- 9:41Speaker 1: this normally means that the team cannot field aside, but
- 9:44Speaker 1: it could be due to just lack of numbers. It
- 9:46Speaker 1: could mean injuries or illness running through the team, especially
- 9:51Speaker 1: this time of year. It could be that players are
- 9:53Speaker 1: not available due to other commitments. Anyway, let's hope things
- 9:57Speaker 1: are looking better for this Saturday's home game against Canterbury. Now,
- 10:01Speaker 1: the Ladies team hadn't played since their twelve five went
- 10:04Speaker 1: over seven oaks way back in November the twenty third,
- 10:08Speaker 1: so would they be a bit rusty when they visited
- 10:10Speaker 1: Ashford for a local derby. Well, the answer was a
- 10:13Speaker 1: definite no. As they ran out winners with a seventy
- 10:16Speaker 1: two to nil a victory. Seeing they finish off twenty
- 10:20Speaker 1: twenty five in second position. Their first game in twenty
- 10:24Speaker 1: twenty six is on Saturday January the eleventh against Lordswood. Now,
- 10:29Speaker 1: remember the ladies got promoted last year and it's not
- 10:32Speaker 1: a very big league, so they don't play every single week,
- 10:35Speaker 1: but they are holding their own doing very well. First
- 10:39Speaker 1: team they're doing okay, and it seems like the second
- 10:42Speaker 1: team might be struggling a bit. So let's hope for
- 10:44Speaker 1: better things for the second team and everybody down there
- 10:48Speaker 1: at the Burlington Fields. Okay, now this one popped up
- 10:51Speaker 1: again because we see the Illegal Eagles. I know a
- 10:56Speaker 1: couple of months ago back at the leeds Cliffe Hall
- 10:58Speaker 1: and they were absolutely awesome. Every note, every harmony was
- 11:02Speaker 1: spot on. And I've picked up on social media that
- 11:06Speaker 1: they are coming back to the Leeecliff Hall. So it
- 11:09Speaker 1: makes you think, she did you go and see him again?
- 11:10Speaker 1: You know, you can't get to see supergroups like the
- 11:13Speaker 1: Eagles anymore. So this is one of the best tribute
- 11:17Speaker 1: bands going. So I've chosen this one from nineteen seventy five,
- 11:20Speaker 1: one of my favorite tracks by the Eagles and it's
- 11:22Speaker 1: one of these nights, but that's the original Eagles, one
- 11:54Speaker 1: of these nights, nineteen seventy five. And you know what,
- 11:57Speaker 1: I've just been checking. Had a quick look find out
- 12:00Speaker 1: when the Illegal Eagles are coming back to the lease
- 12:04Speaker 1: Cliff Hall. And it's on March the first, they're coming back.
- 12:07Speaker 1: And I'll check the tickets, you know, and they nearly
- 12:09Speaker 1: all gone already. So if you are an Eagles fan
- 12:12Speaker 1: and you want to recreate what these guys did back
- 12:15Speaker 1: in the seventies and see the illegal Eagles, you better
- 12:18Speaker 1: get clicking and get googling because there's not many places
- 12:22Speaker 1: left right. So let me tell you about what I
- 12:25Speaker 1: did last weekend. Well, I headed off to South End
- 12:29Speaker 1: on the Saturday because I was comparing a race. It's
- 12:32Speaker 1: called the Rudolph Run. I did that on the Sunday,
- 12:35Speaker 1: so I had a little overnight stay in the hotel
- 12:38Speaker 1: and on the Saturday I got down there. I don't know,
- 12:40Speaker 1: I'm made sure I got down there in the daylight
- 12:42Speaker 1: because I wanted to go up the South End Peer.
- 12:44Speaker 1: You have I been up the South End Peer and
- 12:46Speaker 1: it's over a mile and a third I think it
- 12:48Speaker 1: is and it was getting a bit cold, and I thought, well,
- 12:51Speaker 1: I'm running out a bit of time, so I took
- 12:53Speaker 1: the little train up there. And last time me and
- 12:56Speaker 1: Missus Ferrett went up there was a few years ago.
- 12:59Speaker 1: We did the walk up. It was really really nice.
- 13:02Speaker 1: And the reason that the pier is so long, it's
- 13:04Speaker 1: so obvious, you know, because when the tide goes out
- 13:06Speaker 1: isn't it isn't the sea, it's the Thames Estuary. When
- 13:09Speaker 1: the tide goes out, the tide just disappears. It goes
- 13:12Speaker 1: out about a quarter of a mile. So the idea
- 13:15Speaker 1: was when it was built that if there was any
- 13:17Speaker 1: ferries or a passenger carrying boats, they could more up
- 13:22Speaker 1: right at the end of the pier, and so they
- 13:25Speaker 1: didn't sort of what do you call it ground out underneath.
- 13:29Speaker 1: So it is very deep out there in the middle anyway,
- 13:33Speaker 1: So Sunday moving on to Sunday. Sunday was a really
- 13:35Speaker 1: nice day. As we started setting up about well about
- 13:40Speaker 1: plast seven, I think it's still dark and it was
- 13:43Speaker 1: a bit chilly on the Thames there. But they had
- 13:46Speaker 1: a junior run with over one hundred taking part that
- 13:49Speaker 1: happened at ten o'clock and then a senior five miler
- 13:52Speaker 1: where around seven hundred took part at ten thirty. Now,
- 13:56Speaker 1: as I said, this was a seafront estuary promenade and
- 13:59Speaker 1: the play was packed. I must say this about the
- 14:02Speaker 1: South End runners and the Essex people, they do throw
- 14:05Speaker 1: themselves into it. I imagine around six hundred of them were
- 14:08Speaker 1: done up in festive outfits. We had Santa's, we had elves,
- 14:12Speaker 1: we had Christmas trees, grinches, Christmas puddings, a couple of
- 14:16Speaker 1: Santa sleighs and we even had a homemade Christmas cracker
- 14:20Speaker 1: run in. Now the sun was out, no rain attachilly,
- 14:24Speaker 1: but it was a brilliant atmosphere. It really was fine.
- 14:27Speaker 1: You know, place was buzzing. Now. As I say, the
- 14:30Speaker 1: course was alongside the Thames Estuary, the tide was right
- 14:34Speaker 1: up and so it was an amazing day. And then
- 14:36Speaker 1: luckily after that it was a good drive home to
- 14:39Speaker 1: folks them because you never know, doo you're coming from
- 14:42Speaker 1: that sort of part of Essex. You've got to hit
- 14:44Speaker 1: that tunnel or the bridge on the way back. But
- 14:47Speaker 1: I was lucky you went straight through. So coming up
- 14:50Speaker 1: for me this weekend on Saturday, I'm on the mic
- 14:53Speaker 1: at the Dover Waterfront Christmas Park Run and then on
- 14:56Speaker 1: Sunday it's the Nice Work Christmas Cracker Run at BET's
- 14:59Speaker 1: Hager And will just say that it is the junior
- 15:02Speaker 1: part run on Sunday and they're having a bit of
- 15:05Speaker 1: a Christmas theme there. So parents, if you want to
- 15:07Speaker 1: take your children along, if they haven't been for a while,
- 15:10Speaker 1: then get them done up in their center outfits, in
- 15:12Speaker 1: their elves outfits and take them along to the Junior
- 15:16Speaker 1: part run at Radnor Park nine o'clock start. Now on
- 15:19Speaker 1: Christmas Day, I shall be appearing at the Folkstone Park Run. Yes,
- 15:23Speaker 1: Christmas Day, they're having one Christmas Day. They make sure
- 15:25Speaker 1: they get enough volunteers and then they go ahead, so
- 15:29Speaker 1: I'll be there. Then on Boxing Day it's the forty
- 15:32Speaker 1: ninth annual Assault with Boxing Day run. So if you
- 15:35Speaker 1: want to be a festive exercise, I hope to see
- 15:38Speaker 1: you at one of those. Now trawling back through the archives,
- 15:41Speaker 1: I love this song. I love the Hollis, So listen
- 15:43Speaker 1: to this look through Any Window Coolly's nineteen sixty five. Okay,
- 16:11Speaker 1: let's move on there. We're going to stay in with
- 16:13Speaker 1: the park run theme. Really, our park run tourists were
- 16:17Speaker 1: out and about the following venues. Alara Parsons she run
- 16:21Speaker 1: hers at the Wimbledon Common, Clive Allen was at Bexleet,
- 16:24Speaker 1: Martin Salmon was at Pegwell Bay. Former guests of the
- 16:27Speaker 1: show Tom aspinall he's a womba actually he found himself
- 16:31Speaker 1: at Seaton Park in Devon. Henry and Amy Akson visited
- 16:35Speaker 1: a Swanlea Park Run. Caroline Curtis and Debbie Partment to
- 16:38Speaker 1: run at Moat Park, Madstone. Nicki Goodwin was at the
- 16:42Speaker 1: Thames Path Park Run in Woolwige and finally Oscar Roach,
- 16:46Speaker 1: Simon Ramsay, Neil Adams and Roy Atkins went to the
- 16:49Speaker 1: Dover Waterfront Park Run. So really well everyone was not
- 16:53Speaker 1: too far away, you know, like in the summertime if
- 16:56Speaker 1: we get a park runs coming in from Australia, in
- 16:58Speaker 1: Canada and all over the place, but the furtherest one
- 17:01Speaker 1: last weekend was Tom Aspiner who was in Devon. Now,
- 17:05Speaker 1: park Run that has been just growing stronger and stronger,
- 17:09Speaker 1: isn't it. And I see that the founder member of
- 17:12Speaker 1: park Run was honored by a Luughborough University during the
- 17:15Speaker 1: week and well deserved. It's made such a difference to
- 17:19Speaker 1: people's lives. You don't have to be a top class athlete.
- 17:23Speaker 1: You know, if you're a little bit intimidated by joining
- 17:26Speaker 1: a running club, you can sign up for a park run,
- 17:30Speaker 1: get yourself a bar code, and you can go to
- 17:32Speaker 1: any park run in the country and it doesn't cost
- 17:35Speaker 1: you a penny. So how good is that? You know,
- 17:37Speaker 1: that's brilliant. And of course the volunteers. We must not
- 17:40Speaker 1: forget the volunteers. And it'd be nice to see if
- 17:43Speaker 1: more of the runners would give something back on volunteer.
- 17:47Speaker 1: It seems to be the same old faces, and I
- 17:49Speaker 1: see so many posts saying all volunteers needed, volunteers needed.
- 17:53Speaker 1: So if you're a runner and you've never volunteered, give
- 17:56Speaker 1: it a go. You certainly enjoy it. You can run
- 17:59Speaker 1: the next week. Okay, we've got about basketball news now.
- 18:03Speaker 1: Two wins out of two for the Saints last weekend,
- 18:06Speaker 1: and that's the Folks and Saints. The under sixteen eighteen
- 18:09Speaker 1: beat s six Rebels by eighty one points two fifty
- 18:12Speaker 1: seven and the under fourteens beat Graves and Spartans by
- 18:16Speaker 1: seventy seven points to forty eight. And some tennis news.
- 18:20Speaker 1: This is a lovely bit of news This former guests
- 18:22Speaker 1: of the show, Jody Wood, was presented with a Volunteer
- 18:25Speaker 1: of the Year by the high Lorn Tennis Club last Saturday.
- 18:29Speaker 1: This was due to her work, in particular to the
- 18:31Speaker 1: club's junior section and for supporting events during the year
- 18:35Speaker 1: and for encouraging women into the sport. Now, we've had
- 18:40Speaker 1: Jody on quite a few times in the recent years, actually,
- 18:46Speaker 1: Jody and Chris, her partner, who's a coach down there.
- 18:49Speaker 1: And in one of the first interviews, I remember asking
- 18:51Speaker 1: if she played tennis and she sort of said, no,
- 18:54Speaker 1: you know, of I'm not really sure, you know. But
- 18:58Speaker 1: the second interview we had some months later, she had
- 19:02Speaker 1: picked up the tennis racket and she reluctantly started playing.
- 19:05Speaker 1: But now she's playing regularly, and besides playing, she's more
- 19:09Speaker 1: than thrown herself into volunteering and her efforts have been rewarded.
- 19:13Speaker 1: So we're done to you, Jody. Okay. Now, I was
- 19:16Speaker 1: looking at the playlist today and I saw that this
- 19:19Speaker 1: song hasn't been played on this radio station for three months.
- 19:23Speaker 1: So this sit back and endure this classic track from
- 19:26Speaker 1: Smoking Robinson Tears of a Clown, Smoking Robinson. We had
- 19:45Speaker 1: to dust dust the cobbs of that one, and before
- 19:48Speaker 1: we played it. It hasn't been played for age y
- 19:50Speaker 1: is on this radio station, but it's nice to hear
- 19:53Speaker 1: that one again. Okay, time for a little chat about
- 19:57Speaker 1: the salt Worth Boxing Day Run. Now on December the
- 20:01Speaker 1: twenty sixth, I shall be on the mic comparing the
- 20:03Speaker 1: forty ninth of Boxing Day run. So let me tell
- 20:06Speaker 1: you a bit about it. It first started all those
- 20:08Speaker 1: years ago when a group of nine at local lads
- 20:11Speaker 1: decided to have a cross country run on Boxing Day
- 20:13Speaker 1: then spend the rest of the day in the pub.
- 20:16Speaker 1: Now at least a couple of the original lads sadly
- 20:18Speaker 1: have passed away. Terry Davis passed away with the motor
- 20:21Speaker 1: neurone disease and Mickey Wire from a throat cancer, but
- 20:25Speaker 1: they are still remembered every year now. The motives were
- 20:31Speaker 1: both these cancers. Sorry, both these charities cancer and a
- 20:34Speaker 1: motor neurone have been supported by this race. So let
- 20:39Speaker 1: me tell you about the other charities and establishments that
- 20:42Speaker 1: have also felt the benefit. When you look at it,
- 20:46Speaker 1: it's quite a varied list, which is nice, and it's
- 20:48Speaker 1: not all about if you like mainstream charities which often
- 20:52Speaker 1: get if you like the pickings of a bunch, don't
- 20:53Speaker 1: they certainly motor neurone Disease and Cancer Research UK are
- 20:58Speaker 1: on that list, along with McMillan Cancer Supports. Now this
- 21:02Speaker 1: was a I remember this year that they did. They
- 21:05Speaker 1: did a they donated some money to a thing called
- 21:09Speaker 1: detection dogs. Now what are detection dogs, you ask, Well,
- 21:13Speaker 1: detection dogs are dogs that are trained Now when people
- 21:17Speaker 1: have got if you like, sort of allergies, low blood glue,
- 21:22Speaker 1: coast levels, lots more things like that, the dog, after
- 21:26Speaker 1: training can sense an odor change in the person's body
- 21:30Speaker 1: and if that person needs a little nudge to take
- 21:33Speaker 1: his medication, that's what they do. And well, there was
- 21:37Speaker 1: one year when we was at the presentation and this
- 21:42Speaker 1: chat ball is the detection dog along and the dogs
- 21:46Speaker 1: started getting agitated and keept nudging the owner on his
- 21:50Speaker 1: on his legs and on his knees and things like that,
- 21:53Speaker 1: and it was actually working. Because of all the sort
- 21:56Speaker 1: of excitement of the evening, the gentleman had forgotten to
- 21:59Speaker 1: take his medication and this actual dog it's just giving
- 22:03Speaker 1: him a little reminder that it was due. So how
- 22:06Speaker 1: amazing is that I've read I've been reading about detection dogs.
- 22:10Speaker 1: I mean they use them as we know as sniffer dogs,
- 22:13Speaker 1: sniffing out explosives and things like that, and their sense
- 22:16Speaker 1: of smell is absolutely amazing. But what else did we find?
- 22:21Speaker 1: So Yes, one year I made a donation to a
- 22:24Speaker 1: Canterbury hospital and the money raised there bought TVs and
- 22:28Speaker 1: furniture for the cancer ward. Local schools have benefited with
- 22:32Speaker 1: the donation to buy books. The Silwood Village Hall has
- 22:37Speaker 1: been helped to upgrade the kitchen and the local church
- 22:40Speaker 1: has also had new carpet and money for the roof
- 22:44Speaker 1: and even putting money towards the bill. There's a couple
- 22:48Speaker 1: of things that I have highlighted earlier on in this report,
- 22:51Speaker 1: and I just wanted to say a big well done
- 22:53Speaker 1: to a gentleman called Tony Skelton. Now Tony's run at
- 22:57Speaker 1: least forty Boxing Day fun run and he's still going strong,
- 23:01Speaker 1: So I hope to see you there on the Boxing Day, Tony.
- 23:05Speaker 1: And there was another one that deserves to mention another charity.
- 23:09Speaker 1: One year two lads turned up on motorbikes, big big
- 23:13Speaker 1: motorbikes and they were called blood Runners. Now the blood
- 23:16Speaker 1: Runners are volunteers, and they're on motorbikes. They deliver urgent
- 23:21Speaker 1: supplies of blood. And they came along and they benefited
- 23:25Speaker 1: by a donation from the from the from the run itself. Now,
- 23:30Speaker 1: many of the thousands of people that have taken part
- 23:33Speaker 1: in the years. Over the years may not have realized
- 23:35Speaker 1: all these facts, but the Siltwood Boxing Day fund Run
- 23:39Speaker 1: is a big, big charity fundraising day in the running calendar.
- 23:44Speaker 1: Current race director Greg Boorman was scheduled to join me
- 23:46Speaker 1: today in the studio, but he's a coff and a
- 23:48Speaker 1: sore throat and thought it was safer to stay away,
- 23:52Speaker 1: So get well soon, Greg.
- 23:54Speaker 2: Now.
- 23:54Speaker 1: Greg was telling me during the week though that he
- 23:56Speaker 1: missed the first six years of the run, but then
- 23:59Speaker 1: he joined in as a runner and run it for
- 24:01Speaker 1: nine or ten years. But then it started to get
- 24:03Speaker 1: bigger and bigger, which meant more measures were needed to
- 24:06Speaker 1: put it in place, such as risk assessment and medical
- 24:09Speaker 1: cover and more sort of control over the entries. It
- 24:14Speaker 1: was getting big. I myself run it for many years,
- 24:17Speaker 1: but now I have the job of being MC for
- 24:19Speaker 1: the day. In the past, the race has attracted as
- 24:21Speaker 1: many as a thousand people, many signing up on the
- 24:24Speaker 1: day after agreeing to run it on Christmas Day after
- 24:27Speaker 1: a couple of drinks. We often get that they get
- 24:29Speaker 1: turned up. They turn up and say what have I
- 24:31Speaker 1: let myself in for yesterday at the Christmas dinner table.
- 24:35Speaker 1: I'll put my hand upstead, I'd run it now. It's
- 24:39Speaker 1: got to be treated as a typical fun run. It's
- 24:42Speaker 1: not a PB course because at some points it's very narrow.
- 24:46Speaker 1: There's a kissing gate where they go over a little stream.
- 24:49Speaker 1: Some runners get a little bit frustrated and do try
- 24:52Speaker 1: and jump from one bank to another, always ending up
- 24:55Speaker 1: in the stream. And however, with hundreds of people turn
- 25:00Speaker 1: up as well spectators to come along and watch it
- 25:03Speaker 1: and support, it really is a buzzy day. Now, if
- 25:06Speaker 1: you're going to do it, I would advise entering beforehand
- 25:09Speaker 1: or picking up your number early. Registration opens at nine
- 25:12Speaker 1: point thirty, the run itself starts at twelve. I mean
- 25:15Speaker 1: you could get up there at nine thirty, you pick
- 25:17Speaker 1: your number up and go home and have a cup
- 25:19Speaker 1: of two, can't you. Entries on the day are in
- 25:22Speaker 1: the village hall. Now you can expect the course to
- 25:25Speaker 1: be very muddy, as it looks like we've been going
- 25:27Speaker 1: to have a soggy festive few days, certainly in this
- 25:29Speaker 1: part of the country. Anyway, Greg is going around the
- 25:32Speaker 1: course on Monday in cases any obstructions because it does
- 25:35Speaker 1: change from year to year, you know, trees coming down.
- 25:38Speaker 1: So I hope to see you anyway, I hope to
- 25:41Speaker 1: see your boxing day for three miles of mud hills
- 25:44Speaker 1: and hangover cure. Okay, so this is what I could
- 25:47Speaker 1: do with actually another cup of coffee. This is making
- 25:49Speaker 1: the mechanics, Mike and the mechanics have not that for
- 26:08Speaker 1: a long time either of a nineteen ninety five okay,
- 26:12Speaker 1: so last a few bits of sport now. Now, if
- 26:14Speaker 1: you don't fancy a running a three mile across country course,
- 26:17Speaker 1: you can always join the Boxing Day Dip. And this
- 26:20Speaker 1: event has also been on the calendar for many years
- 26:22Speaker 1: and also raised the money for local charity. It's organized
- 26:25Speaker 1: by the Folkston Lions Club. It's held at the Folkston
- 26:29Speaker 1: Sunny Sands and this year starts at eleven thirty. This
- 26:33Speaker 1: one varies obviously during the course of the year due
- 26:37Speaker 1: to the tide times. Registration is from a nine point
- 26:41Speaker 1: thirty eleven o'clock. It's a fancy dress Judge in Time
- 26:45Speaker 1: and the Difference, as they are known, are encouraged to
- 26:48Speaker 1: enter into the spirit of things and put on a
- 26:50Speaker 1: fancy dress costume of some sort, doesn't matter what it
- 26:53Speaker 1: is as they run into the freezing seas now. Also,
- 26:57Speaker 1: this event also attracts one hundreds of spectators who have
- 27:01Speaker 1: the perfect viewing platform along the promenade. The further information
- 27:05Speaker 1: on the DIP please visit the Folkstonlions dot org dot
- 27:09Speaker 1: uk or just put folks on Boxing Day DIP twenty
- 27:12Speaker 1: twenty five in your Google search box. So now you
- 27:15Speaker 1: have it to long standing charity fundraising events where you
- 27:18Speaker 1: can either get Phil fee Muddy or freezing Cold up
- 27:22Speaker 1: to you right, Okay, so we are not too long
- 27:28Speaker 1: to go now, So we're going to play out with
- 27:30Speaker 1: this one. And this is a Phil Collins song. But
- 27:34Speaker 1: if you get a chance talking about what can we say,
- 27:38Speaker 1: tribute bands there, if you get a chance to see
- 27:41Speaker 1: a group called No Jacket Required, then please go and
- 27:44Speaker 1: see them. They are a Phil Collins tribute band and
- 27:47Speaker 1: they are absolutely awesome. So we're going to play this
- 27:50Speaker 1: one out and I might have time to have a
- 27:53Speaker 1: little chat with you. See what's coming up in a
- 27:55Speaker 1: few moments.
- 27:56Speaker 2: Time, Wayne Man turns the corner finds himself with it.
- 28:17Speaker 1: Well that's it from me. I should be back next Thursday. Yes,
- 28:22Speaker 1: and next Thursday, Christmas Day, there'll be an hour of
- 28:27Speaker 1: chat and music. I probably won't be doing much sport.
- 28:30Speaker 1: I'll probably just make it up as it goes along.
- 28:33Speaker 1: It'd be nice to do a live show on Christmas Day.
- 28:36Speaker 1: So I'd better start writing out my Christmas card, do
- 28:39Speaker 1: my Christmas shopping, hit cracking, get in the mood, stormy.
- 28:48Speaker 2: All sad.
- 28:50Speaker 1: Storm got a lot of busy part runs and festive
- 28:56Speaker 1: runs to do over the Christmas So leaning up to Christmas,
- 28:59Speaker 1: have a eaight time and I'll catch you all next week.
- 29:08Speaker 1: Mm hmm
