- 1:31Speaker 1: two different date changes For South zone dove, hunters AND
- 1:37Speaker 1: i don't like either one of. Them they will Meet
- 1:40Speaker 1: march twenty sixth and vote on these. Changes you need
- 1:44Speaker 1: to make yourself. Heard change number one would Move South
- 1:48Speaker 1: zone opener To september, first so that all three zones
- 1:53Speaker 1: open on the same. Day that would eliminate the special
- 1:56Speaker 1: white wing dove. WEEKENDS i don't like that because that
- 2:03Speaker 1: leads to change number. Two they're moving up The South
- 2:08Speaker 1: zone second season From thanksgiving. Week that would End december twenty,
- 2:15Speaker 1: ninth meaning no dove hunting In. January, AGAIN i don't like.
- 2:21Speaker 1: It my best dove hunter In. January it's Past, Christmas christmas,
- 2:27Speaker 1: time everyone's Busy. Thanksgiving same, thing people are deer. HUNTING
- 2:34Speaker 1: i realize some of you have ranches where you might
- 2:38Speaker 1: be able to do. BOTH i don't know the reason behind.
- 2:42Speaker 1: It i'd like to know the reason behind, it BUT
- 2:45Speaker 1: i don't like. It make yourself. Heard, okay go to

- 2:57Speaker 1: area that you can click on or call or, write you,
- 3:04Speaker 1: know a board.
- 3:05Speaker 4: Member.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Whatever LIKE i, SAID i will do, THAT i will
- 3:10Speaker 1: make myself. HEARD i don't like. It there is an
- 3:17Speaker 1: article THAT i saw, today and the question is are
- 3:25Speaker 1: animal attacks increasing? Worldwide Worldwide japanese villages dealing with aggressive brown,
- 3:36Speaker 1: bears fatal encounters with tigers and rhinos In South. Asia
- 3:44Speaker 1: there's no single global database that tracks every wild animal,
- 3:50Speaker 1: attack which makes it. Difficult you have regional, data you
- 3:56Speaker 1: have government, reports conservation. Research serious attacks remain rare relative
- 4:05Speaker 1: to how many people are in the, world but according
- 4:10Speaker 1: to this, article encounters are becoming more frequent and more.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Dangerous in THE, us fatal mountain lion attacks exceptionally. Uncommon In,
- 4:23Speaker 1: january there was a death of a hiker In colorado
- 4:25Speaker 1: made international. Headlines wildlife officials said that lion populations in
- 4:31Speaker 1: the state are healthy and, stable and animals move to
- 4:36Speaker 1: lower elevations during winter time to follow. Deer in other,
- 4:40Speaker 1: words there's always a. Risk there's always been a, risk
- 4:43Speaker 1: but it is exceedingly rare Across, asia parts of Northern
- 4:49Speaker 1: india dozens of people killed each year by, tigers, leopards.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Elephants napaul has tripled its tiger population the past, decade
- 5:02Speaker 1: but as a, result between twenty nineteen and twenty twenty,
- 5:07Speaker 1: five more than sixty people were killed in tiger. Attacks In,
- 5:15Speaker 1: japan twenty twenty five marked the deadliest year for bear
- 5:19Speaker 1: attacks since they began keeping records with animals in, villages, schools.
- 5:24Speaker 1: Supermarkets In europe countries such As SLOVAKIA i regarded a
- 5:31Speaker 1: sharp rise in bear encounters over the past five years
- 5:39Speaker 1: and arise in fatalities as a. Result there's drought in
- 5:47Speaker 1: a lot of these, areas which means wildlife are on
- 5:49Speaker 1: the move searching for. Food when there is an abundant,
- 5:54Speaker 1: food obviously they come in contact with. Humans similar patterns
- 6:02Speaker 1: documented across six. Continents habitat loss is a. Problem we
- 6:10Speaker 1: know that there's more, people there's more building in areas
- 6:15Speaker 1: that used to be rural that are no longer, rural, agriculture,
- 6:20Speaker 1: logging urban. Sprawl animals used to have a lot of,
- 6:25Speaker 1: space they don't. Anymore in parts Of india nepall invasive
- 6:29Speaker 1: plant species are choking out native food. Sources for seeing
- 6:35Speaker 1: elephants and big cats that travel through, villages more people
- 6:43Speaker 1: in wild, places outdoor, recreation, hiking mountain, biking backcountry. Travel
- 6:52Speaker 1: there's just more. People large, predators because of conservation, efforts
- 7:00Speaker 1: are returning to landscapes where they were once wiped. Out,
- 7:03Speaker 1: Wolves lynx bears In, europe tigers In South, asia mountain
- 7:09Speaker 1: lions In North. America you know that bumper sticker that says,
- 7:14Speaker 1: Coexist you know which One i'm talking. About you know
- 7:18Speaker 1: which people drive those cars and have those bumper. Stickers
- 7:22Speaker 1: animals don't read those feeding, wildlife poor waste, management illegal
- 7:29Speaker 1: keeping of wild, animals all strip away natural. Fear you,
- 7:35Speaker 1: know every year we're going to continue to have stories
- 7:38Speaker 1: about stupid people getting too close to bison and moose
- 7:44Speaker 1: and elk In yellowstone and Other national. Parks wild, animals
- 7:55Speaker 1: according to this their vast majority or, defensive whether it's
- 7:59Speaker 1: a bear detecting, cubs a big cat startled at close,
- 8:02Speaker 1: range an elephant reacting to perceive. Threat we don't have
- 8:06Speaker 1: that problem yet here in The Brasses valley in A
- 8:13Speaker 1: paul better part, management community, education rapid response reduced attacks
- 8:19Speaker 1: as tiger numbers increase other regions experimenting with early warning,
- 8:23Speaker 1: systems predator proof, fencing coordinated, patrols simple changes so the
- 8:35Speaker 1: wild is not necessarily becoming wilder or more. Dangerous LIKE i,
- 8:39Speaker 1: said there are more encounters because there are more, people
- 8:45Speaker 1: but one thing still. Persists get them before they get,
- 8:53Speaker 1: you get them before they get. You if only Poor
- 9:00Speaker 1: penny the chihuahua would known. This penny was viciously attacked
- 9:07Speaker 1: by two pit bulls on The Upper West side Of New.
- 9:11Speaker 1: York the incident occurred While penny was being walked by her.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Owner eyewitness resported the pit bulls lunged At, penny suffering
- 9:24Speaker 1: requiring severe injuries extensive veterinary. Care that's not. Cheap the
- 9:30Speaker 1: owner the pit bulls arrested for civil contempt after failing
- 9:33Speaker 1: to apply with the court order to surrender his. Dogs
- 9:39Speaker 1: had ordered him to provide information about where the dogs
- 9:42Speaker 1: were after the. Attack he, said they've been taken To.
- 9:47Speaker 1: Canada now There's Penny's, law a proposed law aims to
- 9:53Speaker 1: impose stricter penalties on irresponsible pet. Owners listen to, this
- 10:01Speaker 1: people will go to. ANYTHING a rally was held At

- 10:18Speaker 1: UP a ten year old girl was injured in an
- 10:23Speaker 1: attack by a pair of lions and a zoo In
- 10:26Speaker 1: china just last. Week the girl was attempting to feed
- 10:29Speaker 1: the lions At Chantu Zhongshan Park zoo when a lion
- 10:35Speaker 1: grabbed her leg through the cage bars and two of
- 10:38Speaker 1: them attacked. Her the girl had been loud into the
- 10:43Speaker 1: designated feeding area by a zookeeper despite being. Underage the
- 10:50Speaker 1: girl is seen standing close to the lion's, cage offering
- 10:53Speaker 1: the animal's. FOOD a lion has thrust her paw through the,
- 10:56Speaker 1: cage grabbed the girl by the, pants dragged her to the.
- 10:59Speaker 1: Ground she. Screaming the zookeeper grabs her tries to break
- 11:03Speaker 1: free from the lions. Grip another lion reaches through the
- 11:06Speaker 1: cage tries to grab. Her the zookeeper is eventually able
- 11:11Speaker 1: to spot the lions away using a metal. Rod staff
- 11:15Speaker 1: members say they believe the lion has attacked the girl
- 11:18Speaker 1: after spotting meat in her.
- 11:20Speaker 7: Hand you.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Think the girl suffered minor leg. Injuries she was taken
- 11:25Speaker 1: to a local hospital Got Raby shots was discharged later that.
- 11:31Speaker 1: Day an investigation decided that the incident was caused by
- 11:35Speaker 1: a lapse in. Judgment as, quote zookeepers allowed visitors to
- 11:41Speaker 1: enter the isolation area to feed the. Animals the zookeeper
- 11:47Speaker 1: who let the girl into the feeding area with the
- 11:50Speaker 1: lions was shot and. Kick, now, well maybe, so but
- 11:56Speaker 1: according to the story. Suspended the zoo temporarily closed after the.
- 12:04Speaker 1: Incident how stupid do you have to? BE i, MEAN
- 12:09Speaker 1: i don't know the whole. Story maybe the zoo keeper
- 12:12Speaker 1: didn't like the little. Girl, SERIOUSLY i don't know what's
- 12:16Speaker 1: going on. There Redmond, Police, Washington state Of, washington recently
- 12:24Speaker 1: answered an unusual call when an animal decided to flump
- 12:28Speaker 1: the rules of the. ROAD a beaver wanted across the,
- 12:33Speaker 1: road but wouldn't walk on the sidewalk and wouldn't use the,
- 12:37Speaker 1: crosswalk ignored the warning. Signs took a lot of patients
- 12:43Speaker 1: For redmand police officers to get the beaver off the.
- 12:46Speaker 1: Road witnesses reported a suspicious, individual a thick for a,
- 12:52Speaker 1: tail and the desire to cross a road In. Edmund
- 13:01Speaker 1: despite clear instructions from the, police the beaver refused to.
- 13:05Speaker 1: Cooperate there's, Video there's always. Video the beaver continued to
- 13:13Speaker 1: waddle down the road, unperturbed disregarding. Crosswalks the situation required
- 13:20Speaker 1: patients tacked and diplomacy from the officers that'll get paid
- 13:25Speaker 1: enough for this. Stuff the police repeatedly tried to convince
- 13:29Speaker 1: the beaver to walk on the, sidewalk telling it they
- 13:33Speaker 1: didn't want it to end up his, roadkill but the
- 13:35Speaker 1: beaver did not. Respond when officers tried to grab, it
- 13:40Speaker 1: it resisted it slapped one with its. Tail, luckily according
- 13:47Speaker 1: to the, report no officers or other people or beavers
- 13:54Speaker 1: were injured in this. Incident our animals. Attacks it has
- 14:00Speaker 1: brought to you every week By Shorlty, Roofing home of
- 14:04Speaker 1: The Bulletproof Roof. Guarantee it was after a hailstorm a

- 14:20Speaker 8: my out of pocket cost would be after. Insurance they
- 14:22Speaker 8: took the complication out of an otherwise very stressful. Situation
- 14:26Speaker 8: they took off the damage roof put on the new,
- 14:28Speaker 8: roof did all the clean, up AND i had my
- 14:30Speaker 8: new roof in one.
- 14:31Speaker 1: Day the home by the. Broof we are In Spanish,
- 14:40Speaker 1: Wells bahamas With Guidshaw underwood here on The Clark Eisenhower Outdoor.
- 14:47Speaker 7: Edition we're in the midst of a day on the.
- 14:49Speaker 1: Water it's not exactly what we had Ordered, shaw but
- 14:52Speaker 1: my listeners understand that WHEREVER.
- 14:54Speaker 7: I, GO i bring weather with.

- 15:09Speaker 1: twenty to twenty, five that's not. Happening But shaw has
- 15:14Speaker 1: entertained us and been very patient in the process with
- 15:19Speaker 1: all of. Us AND i want this on, Record, shaw so,
- 15:23Speaker 1: Far i've caught one, Grouper.
- 15:25Speaker 3: Yes, SIR i like to see that you did something
- 15:29Speaker 3: That i've never seen happen before on a jig THAT
- 15:32Speaker 3: i didn't think that would Catch gooper and he made.
- 15:36Speaker 7: It having yeah and Mister, Yellowtaiale NOW i WISH i
- 15:39Speaker 7: had that.
- 15:39Speaker 4: One oh, yeah that had been.
- 15:42Speaker 1: Great H so we're gonna go bone fishing With shaw
- 15:46Speaker 1: and next week we'll we'll talk about, that BUT i
- 15:49Speaker 1: want to talk about one of the reasons this time of.
- 15:52Speaker 7: Year this is kind of your prime wahoo, season is it.
- 15:56Speaker 4: Not, yeah this is good time for.
- 15:58Speaker 3: Wahoo no usually like From november Mid november Through. March
- 16:05Speaker 3: you're getting. Good then you'll start getting the mahi come
- 16:07Speaker 3: in after that through. Me so it's pretty. Good you
- 16:11Speaker 3: tell me, That. Wahoo but you can catch them year round, here, RIGHT.
- 16:15Speaker 4: I catch them all through the.
- 16:17Speaker 3: Year, yeah not thick like when they The colgiics move,
- 16:20Speaker 3: through but you, KNOW i do catch.
- 16:22Speaker 1: Them what's the biggest one you've caught on your?
- 16:25Speaker 3: BOAT i caught one six and a half feet long
- 16:29Speaker 3: about a month. Ago it was around one Hundred, wow
- 16:35Speaker 3: that's the biggest. One that's my biggest one.
- 16:36Speaker 1: Today, yeah So i've got one half that, BIG i
- 16:41Speaker 1: think so well half a STILL i would take. Two,
- 16:44Speaker 1: yeah oh, guaranteed. GUARANTEED a better tell our listeners what
- 16:50Speaker 1: you do in terms of wahoo, specifically because we've been
- 16:53Speaker 1: talking a little bit about how you, trol what you,
- 16:56Speaker 1: use what you think the best bait, is and from
- 16:59Speaker 1: the south you catch as many or more. Wahoo is
- 17:02Speaker 1: anybody here At Spanish wells IF i.
- 17:05Speaker 3: Do IF i put in the time for the, fishing
- 17:06Speaker 3: Yeah i'll catch a. Lot but NORMALLY i like to
- 17:09Speaker 3: USE i love using a rigged.
- 17:12Speaker 4: Value it could.
- 17:13Speaker 3: Be, naked or it could have a, skirt or you
- 17:17Speaker 3: could put the lure of your choice on.
- 17:20Speaker 4: It but you, KNOW i mean a rig.
- 17:22Speaker 3: Value at a eight knots nine knots is optimal all the.
- 17:28Speaker 1: Time, so and you're also telling me how you preserve
- 17:32Speaker 1: the ballet who and the best way you think to
- 17:35Speaker 1: fish the ballet?
- 17:35Speaker 3: Who, yeah WELL i like TO i like to preserve
- 17:38Speaker 3: the ballet. WHO i like to salt. It every everyone should.
- 17:41Speaker 4: Salve.
- 17:41Speaker 7: THEN i know you catch your, own but you, can
- 17:44Speaker 7: but you also use, frozen do you?
- 17:46Speaker 3: Not AND i ALWAYS i like to solve them because
- 17:49Speaker 3: if you solve, them, well they're gonna last. Longer they
- 17:53Speaker 3: won't tear off if you make a wrong, turn you,
- 17:56Speaker 3: know something like. That sometimes when you're making a turn
- 17:59Speaker 3: and they catch like and the line is just coming back,
- 18:02Speaker 3: tight it will make A instead of doing that eight or,
- 18:06Speaker 3: nine they'll be doing ten or twelve and you can
- 18:08Speaker 3: start tearing it.
- 18:09Speaker 4: Off.
- 18:10Speaker 1: Well and that's the one THING i want to talk
- 18:12Speaker 1: about With, wahoo especially for the most. Part you need
- 18:16Speaker 1: a pretty light touch on them to get them to
- 18:19Speaker 1: the boat because they can't tear, away.
- 18:24Speaker 3: Not necessarily with the. Water once you get the wahoo
- 18:27Speaker 3: hooked in that. Jaw, See i've actually seen wahoo with
- 18:33Speaker 3: their teeth cut through one hundred pounds.
- 18:37Speaker 4: Cable, yeah and just cut. IT i mean with the
- 18:40Speaker 4: fish right next to the.
- 18:41Speaker 3: Boat you watch it just make a couple of flops
- 18:43Speaker 3: and then you see the lower going flying one way
- 18:46Speaker 3: and the fish is. Gone and you're sitting there like,
- 18:48Speaker 3: that and you're sitting with a piece of cable in your,
- 18:50Speaker 3: hand ninety eight or one hundred pound test cable and cut,
- 18:53Speaker 3: through cut, Through so you, know you don't want to
- 18:56Speaker 3: even think about fishing for them with like mono or
- 18:59Speaker 3: floral Car.
- 19:00Speaker 4: You get them.
- 19:00Speaker 3: ANYWAY i can't do, it but that's. It so you
- 19:04Speaker 3: you want to use your wire or your your your. Cable,
- 19:08Speaker 3: now let me ask you.
- 19:09Speaker 1: THIS i know there's times you may be uh trolling
- 19:13Speaker 1: for mahi or trying to catch something tuna or whatever
- 19:16Speaker 1: that you'll get a wahoo on like. Mono, Correct i've
- 19:21Speaker 1: seen it.
- 19:21Speaker 3: Happen BUT i still When i'm trolling for, Mahi i'm
- 19:25Speaker 3: using wire because it's no, Kidding i'm using it's always
- 19:28Speaker 3: a chance that you get that. Cat, yes, sir, yes,
- 19:31Speaker 3: sir and.
- 19:33Speaker 1: Uh the mahi obviously don't seem to matter with the.
- 19:36Speaker 3: Wire, no they don't even worry about. It and they
- 19:39Speaker 3: when they see that, mahi especially when they see.
- 19:42Speaker 4: That value or something like.
- 19:44Speaker 7: That with the talk about the same kind of bait
- 19:46Speaker 7: you use for, wahoo you can catch.
- 19:48Speaker 1: Mahi, yep, samea same ones. All what's the largest in
- 19:51Speaker 1: your boat.
- 19:52Speaker 3: Mahi the largest MAHI i caught was fifty two. Pounds
- 19:55Speaker 3: oh my, Gosh, yeah that's pretty. Decent, yeah it was six.
- 19:59Speaker 3: Feet it was the so maya thin, yes so it
- 20:04Speaker 3: was a big. Bull so it was like it was
- 20:07Speaker 3: like WHEN i hooked, it was like fighting a piece
- 20:10Speaker 3: of you're hooking a piece of.
- 20:12Speaker 4: Plywood trying to bring it in.
- 20:13Speaker 3: Broadside so it was coming in because it was pulling
- 20:16Speaker 3: on the side trying to get.
- 20:17Speaker 4: Away and that is oh, man that is the. Fun
- 20:20Speaker 4: when you get it to the boat and you realize
- 20:22Speaker 4: what it. Is you, Know, oh it's JUST.
- 20:24Speaker 7: I love one AND i mean. MAHI i love catching May.
- 20:28Speaker 3: Everyone when you get if it's their first, time you
- 20:31Speaker 3: get them in the boat and they catch mahi come
- 20:33Speaker 3: around the.
- 20:34Speaker 4: Boat everyone goes loony all the.
- 20:35Speaker 1: Time, Absolutely i've been in all those Boat, yeah that's
- 20:38Speaker 1: a fun.
- 20:39Speaker 4: Time i'm telling. You so you. Know and then when.
- 20:41Speaker 3: You do catch any any, wahoo in my, opinion from
- 20:46Speaker 3: sixty pounds and, higher from fifty, pounds it's a nice.
- 20:50Speaker 7: Water now cameo trophy.
- 20:52Speaker 3: Wall you, know if you get a seventy pounder butt
- 20:55Speaker 3: caught quite a few of those.
- 20:58Speaker 4: Ninety pounds different things like.
- 21:00Speaker 3: That but when you get that that big, boy that
- 21:03Speaker 3: really knocks your socks.
- 21:04Speaker 1: Off tell our listeners about the reef here where about
- 21:07Speaker 1: a MILE i guess from the reef or.
- 21:08Speaker 3: So, yeah so we are inside now on the on
- 21:13Speaker 3: the southern side of The Devil's, backbone which is a
- 21:17Speaker 3: barrier reef that Protects Spanish wells and The Jason islands
- 21:23Speaker 3: from hurricanes.
- 21:24Speaker 4: And stuff like.
- 21:25Speaker 3: That it actually runs along a path From Harbor island
- 21:29Speaker 3: straight down to you get to the, end which Is Egg,
- 21:33Speaker 3: island so you, know and it's you it's great, snorkeling
- 21:38Speaker 3: beautiful spot where you've seen that earlier because you guys
- 21:40Speaker 3: went snorkeling and you caught some fish in there, too
- 21:43Speaker 3: so you catch fish in.
- 21:44Speaker 4: It it's a nice. Spot it's a nice.
- 21:46Speaker 1: Area now on the other, side it could drop off pretty,
- 21:50Speaker 1: quickly can?
- 21:50Speaker 3: It?
- 21:50Speaker 4: Not very very?
- 21:51Speaker 3: Quickly it drops off from it starts slowly and goes
- 21:56Speaker 3: out to you get to like maybe two hundred two
- 21:59Speaker 3: fifty and it drops right off to about six seven
- 22:01Speaker 3: hundred and in some places he goes to fifteen.
- 22:04Speaker 4: Under some place he goes to three, Thousand like.
- 22:06Speaker 1: How far beyond the Reefer we're talking fifteen hundred to
- 22:10Speaker 1: three thousand?
- 22:10Speaker 4: Feet, uh probably a mile and a.
- 22:12Speaker 1: Half, yeah and you're you're a lot of time trolling
- 22:16Speaker 1: kind of on the edge of that drop, off.
- 22:18Speaker 3: If you are trolling for mahi and. Wahoo, yeah you
- 22:21Speaker 3: want to kind, Of, Yeah.
- 22:23Speaker 1: I'm assuming because of the currents there and because of
- 22:27Speaker 1: how the bait fish come into a place like.
- 22:29Speaker 4: That, yes, yes, right that's. It and that's just about
- 22:32Speaker 4: anywhere you go in the. World you want to look
- 22:36Speaker 4: for those ridges and stuff like. That so that's.
- 22:38Speaker 7: It any kind of depth, Change, Yes so what are
- 22:43Speaker 7: they feeding?
- 22:44Speaker 1: On primarily BECAUSE i mean, off all the pelagics follow, bait,
- 22:49Speaker 1: right they got to. Eat so what kind of bait
- 22:52Speaker 1: primarily are they eating this time of?
- 22:55Speaker 3: Year you get your get, value you're getting will you

- 23:23Speaker 7: But so you.
- 23:23Speaker 1: Will you can catch black fan there while you're fishing
- 23:26Speaker 1: for others things.
- 23:27Speaker 4: In the deeper.
- 23:28Speaker 3: Water black fan always travel in the deeper. Water any
- 23:30Speaker 3: tuna really.
- 23:31Speaker 7: How deep are we?
- 23:32Speaker 3: Talking if you're catching just SAY i youutrol for wahoo
- 23:37Speaker 3: and just say three hundred to five hundred you're going
- 23:42Speaker 3: six seven hundred feet for the black?
- 23:44Speaker 4: Fan? Yeah are?
- 23:45Speaker 7: They? Are they hear the yellow fins the same time
- 23:48Speaker 7: of yours are.
- 23:49Speaker 3: Different you'll get yellow. Fans you get some yellow fins.
- 23:52Speaker 3: Now if you're going to go for yellow, fins, now
- 23:56Speaker 3: you need you need a live bait most of the, time.
- 23:59Speaker 7: No, kidding, yeah, okay. Uh and so if you were
- 24:02Speaker 7: going out yellow fin. Fishing that's what you would. Have,
- 24:06Speaker 7: yes again some bally who what?
- 24:08Speaker 4: Else, well usually you'll use piltrigs for, that, sure yeah.

- 31:55Speaker 1: they did on big horn sheep In West. Texas you,
- 32:01Speaker 1: know there is a limited number of. Them The awdad
- 32:06Speaker 1: sheep have taken over a lot of the, environment so
- 32:10Speaker 1: they've been transporting some to try to save the herd
- 32:16Speaker 1: from infections and things that happened.
- 32:22Speaker 4: Very.
- 32:22Speaker 1: Interesting this is an episode on the big horn sheep
- 32:28Speaker 1: In West.
- 32:29Speaker 13: Texas back In, DECEMBER tpwd help relocate seventy seven big
- 32:34Speaker 13: horn sheep From Elephant Mountain Wildlife Management area to The
- 32:38Speaker 13: Franklin Mountain State park In El. Paso this operation was
- 32:42Speaker 13: the culmination of years worth of effort from hundreds of
- 32:45Speaker 13: dedicated individuals and dozens of.
- 32:48Speaker 14: Organizations we're going to give you the inside, scoop from
- 32:52Speaker 14: the history to the action and all the suspense in.
- 32:55Speaker 14: Between so hang tight because we're about to take you.
- 32:58Speaker 14: Outside if you were to try pick an animal most
- 33:01Speaker 14: symbolic of The American, west you might think of the,
- 33:03Speaker 14: bison the grizzly, bear or perhaps it would be the
- 33:07Speaker 14: big horn. Sheep this mighty animal has been revered as
- 33:11Speaker 14: a symbol of strength and vigor for thousands of, years
- 33:14Speaker 14: making it the subject of myth and war for Both
- 33:16Speaker 14: Native americans and wildlife. Frontiersmen for, me, PERSONALLY i recognize
- 33:21Speaker 14: the animal from the label on the bottle of shiner.
- 33:23Speaker 14: Bock turns out that, bach A bavarian style of dark,
- 33:27Speaker 14: beer also means ram In. German last, YEAR i was
- 33:31Speaker 14: surprised WHEN i learned that bighorn sheep aren't confined to
- 33:33Speaker 14: The rocky mountains and are actually native To. Texas two
- 33:37Speaker 14: hundred years, ago you could point at random to any
- 33:39Speaker 14: mountain on The West texas horizon and know that big
- 33:41Speaker 14: horns were bouncing across its rocky. Face at their peak,
- 33:45Speaker 14: Population guesert bighorn, sheep the subspecies that lives In, texas
- 33:49Speaker 14: numbered upwards of fifteen hundred in The Glone star, State
- 33:53Speaker 14: but in the eighteen, hundreds as the railroad blazed its
- 33:56Speaker 14: way across the, desert so spread unregulated hunting and domesticated
- 34:00Speaker 14: sheep that carried. Diseases in nineteen oh, three The texas
- 34:03Speaker 14: legislature banned the hunting of bighorns to curb their rapid,
- 34:07Speaker 14: decline but populations continued to, plummet and in nineteen fifty,
- 34:11Speaker 14: eight the state's last known native desert bighorn was spotted
- 34:14Speaker 14: at The Sierra Diablo Wildlife Management area north Of Van.
- 34:17Speaker 14: Horn even though bighorns are still found in abundance throughout
- 34:21Speaker 14: The Western, states they've struggled to regain a foothold In
- 34:24Speaker 14: texas thanks to repopulation efforts over the last fifty. Years
- 34:28Speaker 14: the current tally of desert big horns In texas is
- 34:31Speaker 14: about seven, hundred but it's been a constant struggle to,
- 34:34Speaker 14: maintain let alone grow that population because of disease events
- 34:38Speaker 14: over the. Years and that about brings us to where
- 34:42Speaker 14: we are. Today DID i about sum that?
- 34:44Speaker 6: Up?
- 34:44Speaker 1: DAVID i think.
- 34:45Speaker 14: So so then tell me what's the latest development in
- 34:49Speaker 14: the effort to Repopulate texas with.
- 34:50Speaker 13: Bighorns since the first big horns were brought To Elephant
- 34:54Speaker 13: mountain In february of nineteen eighty, seven it served as
- 34:58Speaker 13: a source of disease free shpe that we can use
- 35:00Speaker 13: to repopulate many of the mountain ranges In West. Texas
- 35:04Speaker 13: with its latest, capture we had two goals Bringing Elephant
- 35:08Speaker 13: mountain population back down to a sustainable, level a healthy,
- 35:12Speaker 13: level and then planning a new clean herd at the
- 35:16Speaker 13: twenty six thousand Acre State park In El. Paso in Early,
- 35:20Speaker 13: december The DEPARTMENT tpwd was among numerous organizations that gathered
- 35:25Speaker 13: At Elephant Mountain Wildlife Management area to put that plan into.
- 35:29Speaker 14: Action and how do you accomplish bringing bighorn sheep off the?
- 35:33Speaker 15: Mountain it is a team.
- 35:35Speaker 13: Effort there are captured companies that take the helicopters up
- 35:39Speaker 13: and shoot the net guns and capture the. Animals there
- 35:43Speaker 13: are wranglers that pull the animals, down they hook them
- 35:46Speaker 13: back up to the helicopter and they bring them into
- 35:48Speaker 13: the headquarters, area and then there's a whole team that
- 35:51Speaker 13: grabs the sheep at that. Point and for, us it
- 35:54Speaker 13: was putting them on the tables and making sure we
- 35:57Speaker 13: got great data for our science that we do on
- 36:00Speaker 13: big horn, sheep making sure they were healthy and.
- 36:01Speaker 14: Clean and you, Know, DAVID i saw you there At
- 36:05Speaker 14: Elephant mountain at the. Capture you're wearing a cowboy hat
- 36:08Speaker 14: and a leather. Jacket it looked. Good it was a
- 36:10Speaker 14: nice little get.
- 36:11Speaker 16: Up what did you get up to while we were out, There,
- 36:14Speaker 16: well it was exciting for me because you, know WHEN
- 36:18Speaker 16: i joined The, department one of the things THAT i
- 36:20Speaker 16: wanted to make an impact on was a bighorn.
- 36:22Speaker 13: Sheep within the first month of my time here at The,
- 36:26Speaker 13: DEPARTMENT i Visited Elfant Mountain Wildlife Management, area AND i
- 36:30Speaker 13: wanted to make this a signature, project and so for
- 36:33Speaker 13: me to be there at the capture helping to work
- 36:37Speaker 13: those sheep and get them To El paso eventually it
- 36:40Speaker 13: was a great. Opportunity you, KNOW i did everything THAT
- 36:42Speaker 13: i was told to, do and THEN i volunteered for
- 36:44Speaker 13: some things THAT i wasn't told to. Do BUT i
- 36:47Speaker 13: will tell you it was a bit of an emotional
- 36:49Speaker 13: moment when that first group of bighorn sheep came in
- 36:53Speaker 13: off the, MOUNTAIN i think for a lot of, people
- 36:55Speaker 13: not just, myself because finally we were doing something that
- 36:58Speaker 13: we had planned for so many.
- 37:00Speaker 14: Years take us back to the morning of the. Capture
- 37:03Speaker 14: what was that? Like can you give me the five centses?
- 37:05Speaker 13: Breakdown it was, dark first, thing it was, cold it was.
- 37:13Speaker 13: Windy there was nervousness and excitement in the. Air everybody
- 37:21Speaker 13: was trying to find their. PLACE i, mean we knew
- 37:24Speaker 13: what we were going to be, doing but we really
- 37:26Speaker 13: hadn't done a capture like this big in quite a.
- 37:30Speaker 13: While once that first group of big horn sheep came
- 37:34Speaker 13: in and they were, healthy and the team was just working.
- 37:39Speaker 13: Seamlessly we had over fifty volunteers, there including department. Staff
- 37:46Speaker 13: it was probably one of the best Experiences i've had
- 37:49Speaker 13: in my professional.
- 37:50Speaker 14: Career, so like, You, DAVID i was also An Elephant
- 37:54Speaker 14: mountain for the sheep.
- 37:55Speaker 1: CAPTURE i saw. You it was pretty.
- 37:58Speaker 14: Fun it was cold the night before the, capture me
- 38:01Speaker 14: and about twenty of our coworkers from the communications. Team
- 38:04Speaker 14: we were all crammed into the bunk. Cows have you
- 38:07Speaker 14: been there?
- 38:07Speaker 15: BEFORE i. Have it was actually pretty.
- 38:09Speaker 14: Comfortable we were all packed in their summer camp style
- 38:12Speaker 14: so that we'd be ready to get up early the next.
- 38:14Speaker 14: Morning and when we woke up at the crack of,
- 38:17Speaker 14: dawn we headed out into that bitter winter. Morning it was.
- 38:21Speaker 14: Freezing the mood was pretty, tense but everybody was buzzing
- 38:25Speaker 14: with excitement as the large group of volunteers prepared themselves
- 38:29Speaker 14: for this high stakes. Operation after we got settled at
- 38:35Speaker 14: the capture, SITE i went and Found Elephant mountain's residant
- 38:37Speaker 14: wildlife Biologist cody McIntyre to give me an idea of
- 38:41Speaker 14: what to.
- 38:41Speaker 17: Expect we've got a pretty stiff wind out of the
- 38:44Speaker 17: north right, now so as long as they can stay in,
- 38:47Speaker 17: shape down low or get back around on the windward,
- 38:49Speaker 17: side they ought to be able to keep operations.
- 38:52Speaker 15: Going i'd say that we're probably going to.
- 38:54Speaker 17: See two to four animals the entire.
- 38:55Speaker 15: Day with each.
- 38:56Speaker 17: Sling generally you shoot one at a time out of the.
- 38:59Speaker 17: Helicopter during you're only carrying two, guys a gunner and a.
- 39:02Speaker 14: Mugger the so called gunner wields a net gun that
- 39:04Speaker 14: hurls wide weighted nets through the air to hault agile.
- 39:07Speaker 14: Sheep then the pilot will maneuver the helicopter low to
- 39:10Speaker 14: the ground to make the mugger's job. Easier this person
- 39:13Speaker 14: will jump out of the aircraft to grapple with the
- 39:15Speaker 14: animal and secure it in a harness and. Blindfold as
- 39:18Speaker 14: the group of staff and volunteers gets its, bearings the
- 39:21Speaker 14: helicopter prepares to take.
- 39:22Speaker 18: Flight all, right everybody clear back, THERE i guess pretty?
- 39:27Speaker 2: Clear?
- 39:28Speaker 4: Yeah or?
- 39:28Speaker 15: Clear we're good to.
- 39:29Speaker 2: Go.
- 39:30Speaker 14: Okay the capture crew takes on the first challenge of the,
- 39:36Speaker 14: day ringing sheep down from the mountain side and back
- 39:39Speaker 14: to operation headquarters to be. Processed fredericksburg Based tango eighty

- 43:00Speaker 14: Stop that's Doctor Sarah. Wycough she's one of four veterinarians
- 43:04Speaker 14: here to process the.
- 43:05Speaker 19: Sheep but at least it helps with the temperatures of
- 43:08Speaker 19: the animals during the.
- 43:10Speaker 14: Capture sheep are prone to, overheating and if sheep's temperature
- 43:14Speaker 14: climbs too high for too, long it can cause permanent
- 43:17Speaker 14: damage or even.
- 43:18Speaker 15: Death the helicopter.
- 43:20Speaker 19: Crews know when to stop chasing an animal and when
- 43:22Speaker 19: an animal's getting. There they pull back from a lot
- 43:25Speaker 19: of animals when they know they've been chasing them too.
- 43:27Speaker 14: Much after the sheep reach the, ground the primary job
- 43:30Speaker 14: of the vets and volunteers is to cool them down,
- 43:33Speaker 14: then and to rush to collect samples and to tag
- 43:36Speaker 14: and collar the animals as quickly as possible to minimize.
- 43:38Speaker 15: Stress she'd get.
- 43:40Speaker 19: Some, here three or.
- 43:41Speaker 15: Four they just came over the. Ridge all, right everybody feeling?

- 43:52Speaker 19: Already so we'll work fast on this.
- 43:54Speaker 14: One AS i watched the sheep come, In i'm just
- 43:57Speaker 14: amazed how gently the helicopter crew lowers that first she
- 44:00Speaker 14: to the. Ground there's four men decked out in cowboy
- 44:02Speaker 14: hats and western apparel waiting to carry it to the processing.
- 44:05Speaker 14: TABLES i think someone might have told them that there
- 44:07Speaker 14: would be cameras here.
- 44:08Speaker 15: Today what's our? Temperature?
- 44:10Speaker 14: Please the volunteers spray the sheep with water and apply
- 44:13Speaker 14: ice to cool it.
- 44:14Speaker 15: Down, okay can we get? Water, yes spray down a
- 44:18Speaker 15: sprayed in?
- 44:18Speaker 4: Here.
- 44:19Speaker 14: Yes the vet administer is a dose of, medazzolam a
- 44:23Speaker 14: sedative to calm the sheep and reduce the stress of the.
- 44:25Speaker 19: Capture the medazolam is, in And i'm about to get
- 44:29Speaker 19: banamine as, well so let's move.
- 44:32Speaker 15: Fast, okay banamine is going. In what's the.
- 44:35Speaker 14: Temperature if the spray isn't, enough the vet's administer, banamine
- 44:39Speaker 14: an anti inflammatory to reduce. Fever if it's temperature reaches
- 44:43Speaker 14: one oh, five it gets an. Enema.
- 44:44Speaker 15: Two can we get the water bottle for the enema?
- 44:47Speaker 14: Please, meanwhile volunteers work fast to collect, samples tag the,
- 44:52Speaker 14: animal and put on a tracking.
- 44:53Speaker 15: Collar neasel swabs are? Done, Yes okay toonzil.
- 44:57Speaker 19: Swabs, okay you can go ahead and start. Hagging whoever's.
- 45:02Speaker 19: Callar can we get the collar on, please it's a.
- 45:06Speaker 14: Blindfold now That sarah's team has finished its, work it's
- 45:10Speaker 14: time for the. Cowboys they pick up the sheep and
- 45:12Speaker 14: carry it to the nearby, trailers where it'll wait until
- 45:15Speaker 14: all the sheep are ready for. Transport how did you
- 45:18Speaker 14: guys feel about that first?
- 45:20Speaker 19: Chaos, yeah, okay, okay, cool good job.
- 45:27Speaker 14: Everybody now that that first sheep is, processed it's time
- 45:31Speaker 14: to wait for the next. Delivery the vets and volunteers
- 45:34Speaker 14: make small, talk.
- 45:36Speaker 15: AND i was, like, certain you do realize it's so.
- 45:38Speaker 19: MUCH i KNOW i have somehow got pooped in my
- 45:42Speaker 19: fanning pack already.
- 45:43Speaker 14: Cross i'm fidgeting with my. Recorder WHEN i hear the chopper,
- 45:47Speaker 14: Return i'm. Surprised they're back after only half an hour
- 45:51Speaker 14: THREE us.
- 45:52Speaker 19: So everybody will be getting a. Scan BUT, i, okay
- 46:01Speaker 19: where's my? Ultrasound thank?
- 46:03Speaker 14: You when the that's got a female big horn also called.
- 46:07Speaker 14: You they use an ultrasound to check for, pregnancy the first.
- 46:11Speaker 15: One, yeah at least that. ONE i don't know if
- 46:14Speaker 15: the other one's that you?
- 46:15Speaker 19: Yet is this a ram or you you?
- 46:19Speaker 4: Too?
- 46:19Speaker 15: Use, okay she's, pregnant so press freeze save.
- 46:27Speaker 14: Why cough takes a screenshot on the ultrasound, monitor which
- 46:30Speaker 14: looks like a super rugged computer the kind of war
- 46:33Speaker 14: reporter might use way out in the, desert.
- 46:35Speaker 19: Okay and then press. Back, yeah that looks like a
- 46:40Speaker 19: little spine right. There, okay, Cool so now we'll go
- 46:43Speaker 19: to the other, one excuse, me and then we just
- 46:48Speaker 19: want to clean the probe in between animals and change. Gloves,
- 46:53Speaker 19: Okay so now, patient what is this patient's?
- 46:56Speaker 15: Number?
- 46:57Speaker 19: Zero choose zero gloves, okay pregnant freeze save.
- 47:07Speaker 7: To check for.
- 47:07Speaker 14: Pregnancy White cough looks for one of two. Things the
- 47:10Speaker 14: first is the presence of something called cattle. Eatins basically
- 47:14Speaker 14: you look for seas.
- 47:15Speaker 19: And doughnuts and they are like give nutrition to the.
- 47:19Speaker 19: Baby so ONCE i see, THOSE i know she's.
- 47:21Speaker 14: Pregnant the other thing she looks for is of course a,
- 47:25Speaker 14: fetus but sometimes they can be pretty hard to.
- 47:27Speaker 15: See it's hard to tell, here.
- 47:29Speaker 19: But, yeah that's the. Spine and that's some of the
- 47:32Speaker 19: rib cages right. There so if you look them, screen
- 47:36Speaker 19: so that's its.
- 47:37Speaker 15: Head do you see it's little? Face, yeah and it's
- 47:40Speaker 15: pretty far.
- 47:40Speaker 19: Along it's the biggest one we've seen so, far kicking
- 47:45Speaker 19: saying stop poking me, PLEASE i would like to go
- 47:48Speaker 19: to my new. Home there's the, bones the, spine the.
- 47:51Speaker 19: Heart in this.
- 47:53Speaker 14: First batch of us all of the sheep are, pregnant
- 47:55Speaker 14: and White cough expects pretty much every ear older than
- 47:58Speaker 14: a year to be, pregnant which bodes well for the
- 48:00Speaker 14: future of the.
- 48:00Speaker 19: Herd this is telling us what to expect as far
- 48:03Speaker 19: as lamb recruitment once we have the release and spring comes.
- 48:07Speaker 19: Along but then it also acts as a disease surveillance
- 48:10Speaker 19: method because lamb crops they can have really high mortality
- 48:13Speaker 19: rates when it comes to Mob so if we see
- 48:15Speaker 19: these numbers on here and compare them to what's going
- 48:18Speaker 19: on in the, spring that might be a sign for
- 48:21Speaker 19: us to, say, hey there could be a disease issue going.
- 48:23Speaker 19: On we're not seeing as many as we saw an
- 48:25Speaker 19: ultrasound this. Capture it's early enough in their pregnancy where
- 48:29Speaker 19: this capture is relatively safe in the way of the
- 48:32Speaker 19: baby shouldn't be affected or the fet it shouldn't be.
- 48:34Speaker 19: Affected timing is also really important when it comes to
- 48:37Speaker 19: these captures when these use are. Pregnant so everything's looking
- 48:40Speaker 19: great right, now which is awesome.
- 48:41Speaker 14: Inspite of the high stakes job she's. Doing Why coff
- 48:44Speaker 14: is feeling pretty Good as the day goes. On on
- 48:47Speaker 14: a break between cheap, deliveries she starts daydreaming about what
- 48:50Speaker 14: it'll be like once the sheep are in their new.
- 48:52Speaker 15: Home it would be so.
- 48:53Speaker 19: Fun seeing little babies in a few, Months oh my,
- 48:56Speaker 19: gosh bouncing.
- 48:58Speaker 15: Around, yes that would be great to have little pictures
- 49:01Speaker 15: of them all getting the. Zoomies. Ok they're so, Precious
- 49:06Speaker 15: they're so buck.
- 49:07Speaker 14: Eyed it's been a long road to get to the
- 49:09Speaker 14: point where she can imagine this.
- 49:11Speaker 19: Future i've been prepping for this for the last two,
- 49:14Speaker 19: years essentially with, planning doing our disease surveillance where we
- 49:19Speaker 19: were looking at all of these mountain ranges to see
- 49:21Speaker 19: which ones were appropriate to. Release that started in twenty
- 49:24Speaker 19: twenty two, meetings just getting everybody. Together so it's been
- 49:29Speaker 19: a long process And i'm so happy we're here and
- 49:31Speaker 19: we're finally doing.
- 49:32Speaker 14: It When wykoff said, this it reminded me of the bigger.
- 49:35Speaker 14: Picture why are we doing? This why spend all of this,
- 49:39Speaker 14: time tremendous effort and money just to move some sheep.
- 49:42Speaker 14: AROUND i went and Found freulan hernandez Tpwd's Bighorn Cheap
- 49:47Speaker 14: program lead to ask for some.
- 49:49Speaker 18: Answers it's important that we continue our restoration efforts because
- 49:54Speaker 18: it was because of us that deser big warns are
- 49:57Speaker 18: no longer, Here SO i think it's collect stively our
- 50:00Speaker 18: responsibility to make sure that we get the habitat as
- 50:06Speaker 18: close to as it once was as we.
- 50:08Speaker 14: Can in the late nineteen, fifties the agency that later
- 50:11Speaker 14: BECAME tpwd introduced what is now the bighorn's primary. Threat
- 50:15Speaker 14: The Texas game And Fish, commission released forty two out
- 50:18Speaker 14: ad Into Polyderic canyon to study their viability in The
- 50:21Speaker 14: Lone Star. State their intention was to provide more hunting
- 50:25Speaker 14: opportunities for private, ranchers but over the following ten, years
- 50:29Speaker 14: the auDA population grew to six hundred and quickly spread
- 50:33Speaker 14: beyond the confines of the park and onto private, land
- 50:36Speaker 14: where they became harder to. Track now they've become a
- 50:39Speaker 14: disease vector FOR.
- 50:40Speaker 18: Molv it's also important for us to give back to
- 50:44Speaker 18: the people Of. Texas taking the big ones to The
- 50:46Speaker 18: franklins gives.
- 50:48Speaker 4: The people a text as an opportunity.
- 50:50Speaker 20: To see a species that is not commonly. Seen you
- 50:53Speaker 20: see white tails all, over and you might see mule
- 50:55Speaker 20: deer and lots of, place and you might see prong
- 50:58Speaker 20: horn in less, numbers but there's still opportunity to See Prong,
- 51:01Speaker 20: horn to see, bighorn and know they're very limited, opportunities
- 51:04Speaker 20: and so we're trying to do that to give to
- 51:06Speaker 20: the public another eating.
- 51:08Speaker 14: Opportunity we're back on the first day of the capture
- 51:11Speaker 14: and about forty sheep have been pulled down off the,
- 51:13Speaker 14: mountain which means the crew has collected enough samples to
- 51:16Speaker 14: send To, wattle The Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic lab and Pullman.
- 51:21Speaker 14: Washington there they'll test the samples FOR.
- 51:24Speaker 21: Mov so the next step right now is get these
- 51:28Speaker 21: samples taken to The Wattle, samples take them to The Alpine,
- 51:32Speaker 21: airport and then fly them to The Washington left will
- 51:35Speaker 21: continue to. Capture it's just these samples we need to
- 51:38Speaker 21: get up there so that we can get results back
- 51:40Speaker 21: or you're.
- 51:41Speaker 14: It'll take about twenty four hours for the results to come.
- 51:43Speaker 14: In at that, point the sheep will already be on
- 51:46Speaker 14: the road To El paso so they can make it
- 51:47Speaker 14: in time for the public release. Event but if any
- 51:51Speaker 14: of the samples come back, positive the trucks will all
- 51:53Speaker 14: turn around and head straight back To Elephant.
- 51:56Speaker 21: Mountain, luckily we feel pretty confident we've had on the
- 52:00Speaker 21: landscape for over a, year no, disease, mortalities high. Recruitment
- 52:05Speaker 21: this is just a precautionary measure to make sure that
- 52:07Speaker 21: what we release on The franklins are all in clean.
- 52:10Speaker 14: ANIMALS i jumped in a car With Austin, bohammon A tpwd,
- 52:14Speaker 14: biologist to drive the samples to the.
- 52:16Speaker 15: Airport is that the?
- 52:18Speaker 14: Box so now all we have to do is not get.
- 52:21Speaker 15: In a car, crash.
- 52:22Speaker 14: Right, Yes we start up his truck and make the
- 52:28Speaker 14: forty five minute drive to The Alpine Municipal. AIRPORT i
- 52:31Speaker 14: knew the samples would be flown by, plane BUT i
- 52:33Speaker 14: still wasn't expecting the private jet that was waiting for
- 52:36Speaker 14: us by the. Runway, frustrats well, Off are you sure
- 52:41Speaker 14: they're all?
- 52:45Speaker 15: Right are you taking off right?
- 52:47Speaker 4: Now?
- 52:47Speaker 14: Yeah we're ready to the next, day the capture continues
- 52:51Speaker 14: until about two. Pm we still don't have the results
- 52:53Speaker 14: back from the, lab but we should head to Al
- 52:55Speaker 14: passo soon otherwise we won't make it in time for
- 52:58Speaker 14: the public bighorn release. EVENT i go Ask broylin for an.
- 53:01Speaker 14: Update how many sheep did they get and are they?
- 53:04Speaker 4: Stopping we'll get a total here pretty, quick right?
- 53:07Speaker 21: NOW i think that stand in count of seventy.
- 53:08Speaker 14: Eight it was seventy seven, Actually but with all the
- 53:12Speaker 14: sheep processed and loaded into, trailers it was time to
- 53:15Speaker 14: hit the. Road but if we got news that any
- 53:17Speaker 14: of the sheep are positive FOR, mov we'll have to
- 53:20Speaker 14: call off the, release turn around and head.
- 53:22Speaker 8: Back it was after a hailstorm a few years. BACK
- 53:24Speaker 8: i needed a new. Roof, YEAH i shopped around and
