- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Monday, it is the 10th of
- 0:17February and it's great to have your company at the beginning of
- 0:20another week. I hope you are going well as you
- 0:23put down whatever it is that your day is giving you so that
- 0:27you can touch base with God's Word again and allow the rhythm
- 0:31of God's ideas and thoughts to come in and punctuate your day.
- 0:36And the section of Second Kings that we're reading through at
- 0:38the moment, this is really kind of doing a deep dive into
- 0:42building the credibility of Elisha as God's prophet.
- 0:46It is going to show him doing miracle after miracle and with
- 0:49each miracle in each new circumstance, it just builds
- 0:53this reputation and this understanding from the people
- 0:57around him that God is still present and still speaking
- 1:02through his people. And that it's not just miracles,
- 1:05but the word of God also comes through these these men.
- 1:08And so when they speak God's word, it can be heard as God
- 1:13speaking with his own authority. So this really is the building
- 1:17of the legend of Elisha and the story we're going to read today
- 1:21about the healing of Naman. This is one of the most popular
- 1:24stories which seeks to bolster his credibility.
- 1:27So without further delay, friends, let us dive right into
- 1:31it, reading together Second Kings Chapter 5.
- 1:44The king of Aram had great admiration for Naaman, the
- 1:47commander of his army, because through him the Lord had given
- 1:51Aram great victories. But though Naaman was a mighty
- 1:54warrior, he suffered from leprosy.
- 1:58At this time, Aramean Raiders had invaded the land of Israel,
- 2:01and among their captives was a young girl who had been given to
- 2:05Naaman's wife as a maid. One day the girl said to her
- 2:08mistress, I wish my master would go and see the prophet in
- 2:12Samaria. He would heal him of his
- 2:14leprosy. So Naaman told the king what the
- 2:17young girl from Israel had said, Go and visit the prophet.
- 2:22The king of Aram told him, I will send a letter of
- 2:25introduction for you to take to the king of Israel.
- 2:29So Naaman started out carrying as gifts 750 lbs of silver, 150
- 2:35lbs of gold, and 10 sets of clothing.
- 2:39The letter to the king of Israel said, With this letter, I
- 2:43present my servant Naman, I want you to heal him of his leprosy.
- 2:49When the king of Israel read the letter, he tore his clothes in
- 2:53dismay and said, Am I God that I can give life and take it away?
- 2:59Why is this man asking me to heal someone with leprosy?
- 3:03I can see that he's just trying to pick a fight with me.
- 3:06But when Elisha, the man of God, heard that the king of Israel
- 3:10had torn his clothes in dismay, he sent this message to him.
- 3:14Why are you so upset? Send Naman to me and he will
- 3:19learn that there is a true prophet here in Israel.
- 3:23So Naman went with his horses and Chariots and waited at the
- 3:27door of Elisha's house. But Elisha sent a messenger out
- 3:31to him with this message. Go and wash yourself 7 times in
- 3:35the Jordan River. Then your skin will be restored
- 3:39and you will be healed of your leprosy.
- 3:42But Naaman became angry and stalked away.
- 3:46I thought he would certainly come out to meet me, he said.
- 3:49I expected him to wave his hand over the leprosy and call on the
- 3:53name of the Lord his God and heal me.
- 3:56Aren't the rivers of Damascus, the Ibana, and the Farpa better
- 4:00than any of the rivers in Israel?
- 4:02Why shouldn't I wash in them and be healed?
- 4:05Sir Naaman turned and went away in a rage, but his officers
- 4:10tried to reason with him and said, Sir, if the Prophet had
- 4:14told you to do something very difficult, wouldn't you have
- 4:17done it? So you should certainly obey him
- 4:20when he says simply go and wash and be cured.
- 4:24Sir Naaman went down to the Jordan River and dipped himself
- 4:277 times as the man of God had instructed him, and his skin
- 4:32became as healthy as the skin of a young child, and he was
- 4:36healed. Then Naaman and his entire party
- 4:39went back to find the man of God.
- 4:41They stood before him, and Naaman said, Now I know that
- 4:46there is no God in all the world except in Israel, so please
- 4:51accept a gift from your servant. But Elisha replied, As surely as
- 4:56the Lord lives whom I serve, I will not accept any gifts.
- 5:02And though Naaman urged him to take the gifts, Elijah refused.
- 5:07Then Naaman said, all right, but please allow me to load two of
- 5:12my mules with earth from this place, and I will take it back
- 5:16home with me. From now on, I will never again
- 5:19offer burnt offerings or sacrifices to any other God
- 5:23except the Lord. However, may the Lord pardon me
- 5:27in this one thing, when my master the king goes into the
- 5:31temple of the God Rimon to worship there and leans on my
- 5:35arm, may the Lord pardon me when I bow to go in peace.
- 5:42Elisha said. So Naman started home again.
- 5:46But Gehazi, the servant of Elisha, the man of God, said to
- 5:50himself, My master should not have let this Aramean get away
- 5:54without accepting any of these gifts.
- 5:57As surely as the Lord lives, I will chase after him and get
- 6:00something from him. So Ghazi set off after Naaman.
- 6:05When Naaman saw Ghazi running after him, he climbed down from
- 6:08his chariot and went to meet him.
- 6:11Is everything all right? Naaman asked.
- 6:14Yes, Ghazi said. But my master has sent me to
- 6:17tell you that two young prophets from the Hill Country of Ephraim
- 6:21have just arrived. He would like 75 lbs of silver
- 6:25and two sets of clothing to give to them.
- 6:27Oh, by all means, take twice as much silver.
- 6:31Naaman insisted. He gave him two sets of
- 6:33clothing, tied up the money in two bags and sent two of his
- 6:37servants to carry the gifts for Ghazi.
- 6:40But when they arrived at the citadel, Ghazi took the gifts
- 6:43from the servants and sent the men back.
- 6:46Then he went and hid the gifts inside the house.
- 6:50When he went in to his master, Elijah asked him, Where have you
- 6:54been, Ghazi? I haven't been anywhere, he
- 6:57replied. But Elijah asked him, Don't you
- 7:01realise that I was there in spirit when Naaman stepped down
- 7:05from his chariot to meet you? Is this the time to receive
- 7:09money and clothing, olive Groves and vineyards, sheep and cattle
- 7:15and male and female servants? Because you have done this, you
- 7:19and your descendants will suffer from Naaman's leprosy forever.
- 7:24When Ghazi left the room, he was covered with leprosy.
- 7:28His skin was white as snow. Our Father, we hear in this
- 7:43story that when we come before you with the heart seeking your
- 7:47goodness, that you are indeed good to us and that we do not
- 7:53have to be self seeking, looking after our own needs first and
- 7:57foremost above all else, like this servant Gehazi.
- 8:02But you show that you will provide for our needs.
- 8:06And Father, so we come before you with a repentant heart and
- 8:10with our arms outstretched, ready to receive you.
- 8:15Receive your spirit. Have you grow inside us so that
- 8:19we can truly grow more and more to be more like you, Jesus,
- 8:23every day, and that as we do that as the fruits of your
- 8:26Spirit grow inside us, that you can use us to further Your
- 8:32Kingdom for Your glory, because we are Your servants.
- 8:38Thank You for the provisions that you give us, all the things
- 8:42that we will enjoy today, given generously from Your hand.
- 8:47But most of all, Father, we thank you for giving us Jesus,
- 8:51who has saved us and brought us to you, in whose name we pray.
- 8:55All these things. Amen.
