- 0:00when you look at your guys on defense,
- 0:02you guys on defense, just what do you
- 0:04think is kind of the biggest area y'all
- 0:05need to improve right now?
- 0:07>> Um, definitely being in the gaps um you
- 0:11know, within teams, especially teams
- 0:13that can drive, see a lot of space and
- 0:16you see kind of a open floor. I mean,
- 0:19anybody who can play college basketball
- 0:21can drive it um either hand. So I think
- 0:25at times we were a too flat and nine our
- 0:28gaps. Um so that gave them the
- 0:31confidence to drive which you know you
- 0:33get a couple easy makes than the hard
- 0:35shots going in. Um and then two we
- 0:39opened up way too much. Like if we they
- 0:41were right-handed we would shade that
- 0:43right hand so much that we basically
- 0:45opened up the left gate. Like I said
- 0:47we're all D1 basketball players now.
- 0:49We're in SEC play all high major. you're
- 0:52you're going to be able people are going
- 0:55to be able to drive with their off
- 0:56hands. I mean, even if they're not the
- 0:57best at it, they will still will be able
- 0:59to drive with it. So, I think that's um
- 1:01the step we obviously need to take
- 1:03forward um to just kind of growing what
- 1:06our defensive uh presence needs to be.
- 1:15>> Sebastian, uh Stephen mentioned that um
- 1:18Phil Jovic played the best defensively
- 1:20against Georgia. What was that to say
- 1:22about his hustle, his work ethic, how
- 1:23much he's improved just over the last
- 1:25couple months?
- 1:25>> No, I mean Philip has obviously improved
- 1:27a ton. Um, you know, I love getting to
- 1:30see that in person. Um, just dayto day.
- 1:33Um, Philillip I mean there was some I
- 1:36watched the game back with Bird and you
- 1:38know there are just some clips where you
- 1:41see Phil get switched onto a guard and
- 1:43he just absolutely sits down and he's
- 1:45just a monster defensively. And you
- 1:47know, at times, you know, I felt that in
- 1:49practice, you know, when back in the
- 1:50summer when we would play one-on-one
- 1:52against each other, you would kind of
- 1:54feel like, okay, like like it's not as
- 1:56easy to score. Um, but, you know, he's
- 1:59now finding his rhythms, finding his
- 2:01way, and you know, I you know, I love
- 2:04Philip, so you know, uh, it's it's
- 2:06really it's it's happy for me to see
- 2:09just because I know that's something
- 2:10he's been, um, beating himself up for
- 2:13for a while at times.
- 2:17obviously very unique in how they play.
- 2:18What do you see in them? Just the way
- 2:20they press and you know the way they
- 2:21they operate on defense.
- 2:22>> Um no. So as somebody who was recruited
- 2:25from&m for all four years of high school
- 2:27is definitely very different than&m I
- 2:29knew. Um but you know they're going to
- 2:32get after you. Um I still say they
- 2:35they're going to play hard. Um you know
- 2:37they press after misses, they press
- 2:38after makes. Uh just going to be kind of
- 2:41one of those things where you know we're
- 2:42going to have to take care of the ball
- 2:43obviously. uh not get sped up, but um
- 2:47you know,
- 2:50if they decide to press us, we're just
- 2:51going have to show fours and the ones
- 2:53are going to show we can handle the
- 2:54ball. We can handle that pressure and go
- 2:56out and attack like we can do and what
- 2:59we have done when we face presses in the
- 3:01past.
- 3:03>> You guys, you know, up front, this might
- 3:05not be as big court, but you guys are
- 3:08number 13 in the country in offensive
- 3:09rebounding. You're getting better on the
- 3:11defensive glass. What's that kind of
- 3:12said about y'all and just the effort
- 3:14y'all put on the glass every night.
- 3:16>> No, I mean it definitely it I mean
- 3:19offensively, you know, when we crash, we
- 3:22all crash. We see as a scoring
- 3:23opportunity. Um, you know, we Philip,
- 3:27me, Key, Murf, um, even Elijah when he
- 3:31gets in sometimes at the four, we all
- 3:33use as a scoring opportunity. Um, and
- 3:35then defensively, you know, it's kind of
- 3:38just limiting them to one shots because
- 3:41we know
- 3:43um obviously our guards worked really
- 3:45hard to get them to shoot maybe a
- 3:47terrible shot or you know they're
- 3:49contesting. So, and let's say we haven't
- 3:52really been involved in ball screens or
- 3:54something like that, the least we can do
- 3:55is get the rebound in that possession.
- 3:57Um, so it's just kind of one of those
- 3:59things, you know, playing for each
- 4:01other. Um,
- 4:03and you know, just kind of trying to uh
- 4:07build up our build up um our defense
- 4:10from our rebounding. And you know, when
- 4:11we get rebounds, we get to go out and do
- 4:13what we like to do, which is play in
- 4:14transition. So for us, that's even more
- 4:17fun.
- 4:20>> Like the third straight game, y'all are
- 4:21going to play against a team that's
- 4:22going to play fast, run a lot of guards
- 4:24out. For you as a big man, you know, I
- 4:26know you have to switch out a lot or go
- 4:28out on the perimeter. was the key to
- 4:29defending teams like this, especially
- 4:30for some of the bigger guys out there.
- 4:32>> Uh for I mean for some of our bigger
- 4:34guys, um you know, really staying
- 4:37disciplined. Um in terms of, you know,
- 4:40the moves that they make, um you know, a
- 4:42lot of cars, they're do a lot of head
- 4:44fakes, a lot of pump face, a lot of
- 4:45jabs, just kind of get us moving one way
- 4:48or the other. But, you know, if we stay
- 4:50down, use our length, you know, it's
- 4:52it's really hard to um go go against it.
- 4:55like they're, you know, we may not be as
- 4:58fast as them or as quick as them, but I
- 5:01mean, they aren't as tall as us. So, if
- 5:04they have to take a longer route to get
- 5:05to the basket, a that allows time for
- 5:08help side to get over if necessary. And
- 5:10B, you know, that gives us because
- 5:13they're while they're going around in a
- 5:15curved line, we go in a straight line,
- 5:17we can still meet that at the rim and
- 5:18still have a little bit of protection.
- 5:21Sebastian Steven was saying that he was
- 5:23looking forward to this game
- 5:25specifically for you because he gets the
- 5:27ball be in your hands a lot beating the
- 5:28press. What's your mindset when when
- 5:30you're doing that?
- 5:31>> Um I mean first off to be decisive. Um
- 5:34you know indecisiveness when teams press
- 5:36you will kill you.
- 5:38>> Um and that's just um point play period.
- 5:41Um but you know just to go out there and
- 5:44just kind of be aggressive. Um you know
- 5:46I obviously offensively didn't have my
- 5:48best game against Georgia. Um, so kind
- 5:52of bouncing back and playing like the
- 5:55player I know I am. Um, just is kind of
- 5:59that's kind of what I'm looking forward
- 6:00to with this game. Um, you know, not
- 6:03only just create for myself, for my
- 6:04teammates as well. So, yeah.
- 6:07>> You played 42 minutes in your first SEC
- 6:10game. How would you kind of looking back
- 6:12at your game as a whole? you were
- 6:13talking about just a second ago about
- 6:15needing to, you know, want to do more on
- 6:17offense, but just, you know, going
- 6:18through that grind like that, you know,
- 6:20kind of how would you kind of assess how
- 6:22you did?
- 6:23>> Um, well, 42 minutes obviously, you
- 6:26know, that was a bit of a surprise that
- 6:28everyone else had played that much in
- 6:29the game. Uh, I know my jersey felt like
- 6:31it, but you know, I'm used to sweating a
- 6:34ton. So, um, but just going through it,
- 6:38um, you know, just keeping the main
- 6:40thing the main thing, um, you know, I
- 6:42know,
- 6:44uh, defensively I still got to be solid.
- 6:46I still can't have any lapses. Um, you
- 6:49know, I think, um, just kind of trying
- 6:53to persevere, persevere through the
- 6:55fatigue at times just because, you know,
- 6:57it is really easy to, oh well, you know,
- 7:01I'm a freshman. and I'm in my 40th
- 7:03minute like know I probably could have
- 7:06gotten a sub like for a second like but
- 7:09no like the team needs you the team like
- 7:13like every guy on the court matters and
- 7:15is on there for a reason so you need to
- 7:18you know mentally stay sharp uh you know
- 7:20kind of be there especially like on late
- 7:23in the game where we didn't really have
- 7:24a point guard and we were running plays
- 7:26I'm trying to like help with Ke knowing
- 7:29where he needs to go KO needs to go
- 7:31where Elijah needs to go just because
- 7:32we're kind of make that I mean that's
- 7:36not a lineup we typically run at
- 7:37practice um or ever run in practice. So
- 7:40you know just kind of um out living in
- 7:43that situation um
- 7:46just yeah I'll say just kind of just
- 7:48trying to stay focused and you know
- 7:50focus on getting the win obviously which
- 7:52we didn't get but you know that was I
- 7:55mean it was a definitely
- 7:58experience that I won't ever forget.
- 8:00All
- 8:02right.
