- 0:00Speaker 1: Good afternoon, and welcome to the program here on Sports
- 0:02Speaker 1: Radio AM thirteen under the Zone.
- 0:04Speaker 2: My name is Craig Wait.
- 0:05Speaker 1: Thanks so much for joining us, and we're with you
- 0:09Speaker 1: each and every afternoon from two to five Monday through Friday,
- 0:13Speaker 1: unless we're traveling or game or all that. There'll be
- 0:16Speaker 1: some of that stuff going on this week for us. US,
- 0:19Speaker 1: of course, includes the producer of this program, Cameron D.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Parker.
- 0:22Speaker 1: The D on the birth certificate stands for Dallas, as
- 0:26Speaker 1: in his favorite pro football team, who we learned just
- 0:28Speaker 1: a little while ago, is granting Cameron's wish and is
- 0:34Speaker 1: going to have a new head coach. I was looking
- 0:38Speaker 1: for confetti and streamers and horn sounding and all that
- 0:42Speaker 1: other kind of stuff. God is good, is good. So
- 0:48Speaker 1: the Almighty handle this.
- 0:50Speaker 3: No, Yeah, he's a little bit busy with more things
- 0:53Speaker 3: important than Jerry Jones. But a lot, a lot of
- 0:57Speaker 3: ways we can go and quick cope with this, Craig
- 1:00Speaker 3: claud this finally happened. If only I had seen this,
- 1:03Speaker 3: Oh way, Yeah, I think all Cowboys fans knew this
- 1:06Speaker 3: after the last season that we were going to be here.
- 1:08Speaker 3: So on the one hand, it's caused for celebration. The
- 1:12Speaker 3: Cowboys and Mike McCarthy have parted ways. But also just
- 1:16Speaker 3: the fact that this whole thing could have been avoided
- 1:19Speaker 3: a year ago and kind of shows you that Jerry
- 1:22Speaker 3: Jones and the Cowboys just don't have a plan they
- 1:25Speaker 3: have They have no idea what's going on. They have
- 1:27Speaker 3: no idea what they're doing. Well, their plan was hope.
- 1:29Speaker 3: They were hoping that McCarthy could get it turned around.
- 1:32Speaker 3: After all, they were the two seed last year, you know,
- 1:36Speaker 3: before the collapse against the Packers, So there was hope
- 1:38Speaker 3: that they were going to build off of that. That
- 1:41Speaker 3: obviously didn't happen.
- 1:43Speaker 1: There's great and then and then it was kind of
- 1:45Speaker 1: weird because the Cowboys refused to grant the Bear's permission
- 1:47Speaker 1: to talk to him.
- 1:48Speaker 3: So that's what I understand, Craig, is if you're still
- 1:50Speaker 3: in negotiations with your head coach this week, what does
- 1:53Speaker 3: that mean? Like they couldn't come to a deal because
- 1:55Speaker 3: apparently McCarthy wanted something a little bit longer, the Cowboys
- 1:57Speaker 3: weren't sold on that. So what was what was your plan?
- 2:01Speaker 3: Because all these all these other teams either either they
- 2:04Speaker 3: have made their higher like the Patriots with Mike Frable,
- 2:07Speaker 3: or you're a team like the Bears or Saints who
- 2:10Speaker 3: ideally is probably waiting on a coordinator like Ben Johnson
- 2:15Speaker 3: or Slowick with the Texans Jerry Jones, just like, let's
- 2:19Speaker 3: see what happens. I don't know, we'll see. So this
- 2:23Speaker 3: coaching starts going to be wild. Craig, It's gonna be
- 2:26Speaker 3: absolutely wild. If you told me the Marl it's gonna
- 2:29Speaker 3: be John Gruden, wouldn't be surprised. If you told me
- 2:30Speaker 3: it's Jason Whitnew wouldn't be surprised. Shoot, Kellen Moore Philadelphia
- 2:34Speaker 3: would not be a surprised. I don't think so, because
- 2:38Speaker 3: I figured we would have heard more traction in the
- 2:41Speaker 3: years past. But maybe with the way Jerry I mean,
- 2:45Speaker 3: you know, you know how Jerry likes to operate. He
- 2:47Speaker 3: likes to have either a coach that has that Super
- 2:49Speaker 3: Bowl resume so that screams John Gruden or Pete Carroll.
- 2:54Speaker 3: I wouldn't mind Pee Koe. I'm not on Gruden or
- 2:56Speaker 3: someone that has a relationship with a franchise. Kellen Moore,
- 2:59Speaker 3: who was obviously the OC here before going to Philadelphia.
- 3:03Speaker 3: Deon Sanders, who I don't know, you know, apparently his
- 3:06Speaker 3: camp has reached out to Las Vegas, Las Vegas that
- 3:08Speaker 3: we're good on that front. Or as we heard coming
- 3:11Speaker 3: into the show on the Callen Coward Show, Jason Witten,
- 3:14Speaker 3: who I believe one of our listeners actually texted in
- 3:16Speaker 3: last week and said, Hey, what about Jason Whitten, who
- 3:19Speaker 3: I believe is win back to back state championships.
- 3:23Speaker 1: At the private school right level at Liberty Christian in Argyle. Yeah,
- 3:28Speaker 1: between Dallas and Denton, just south of Denton.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Yeah, he is done.
- 3:32Speaker 1: All right, So that news is coming down today and
- 3:35Speaker 1: we've got a lot of time to discuss it, and
- 3:37Speaker 1: we will.
- 3:38Speaker 2: We'll talk about that. We'll talk about the NFL.
- 3:40Speaker 1: Wild Card weekend, which is weekend plus one because there's
- 3:43Speaker 1: one more wildcard game that's tonight, Rams and Vikings playing
- 3:47Speaker 1: in Glendale, Arizona. There's a whole lot of permutations around that,
- 3:51Speaker 1: and how the winner now will go to Philadelphia out
- 3:53Speaker 1: Detroit because of what the Washington Commanders did last night.
- 3:56Speaker 1: So we'll talk about that. The review of the AFC stuff,
- 3:58Speaker 1: which was traw and then some, so we'll get to
- 4:03Speaker 1: that obviously. We'll also have review of the long win
- 4:06Speaker 1: football season which came to its heartbreaking conclusion on Friday
- 4:11Speaker 1: night at the Cotton Bowl in the semifinal round of
- 4:15Speaker 1: the College Football Playoff, and talk about that the players
- 4:17Speaker 1: who have decided they're moving on to the National Football League.
- 4:22Speaker 1: We'll talk about the two teams remaining, Ohio State and
- 4:26Speaker 1: Notre Dame, and then there's Long.
- 4:30Speaker 2: One basketball to talk about.
- 4:31Speaker 1: They come off playing back to back games against the
- 4:34Speaker 1: number two team in the country and the number one
- 4:37Speaker 1: team in the country. That's never happened before for Texas,
- 4:41Speaker 1: and they had two incredibly competitive games, especially the game
- 4:44Speaker 1: Saturday against Tennessee. They were way down Auburn but came
- 4:47Speaker 1: back and cut it to three twice in the final minute.
- 4:49Speaker 2: We couldn't get over the hump. And then Tennessee.
- 4:50Speaker 1: They led a lot of the game, including they were
- 4:53Speaker 1: by five to nine minutes to go and Tennessee was
- 4:56Speaker 1: able to ease away and win it by four. And
- 5:00Speaker 1: the Long Wrns leave tomorrow for Norman, Oklahoma to play
- 5:03Speaker 1: in Oklahoma team that start off unbeating it was red hot,
- 5:05Speaker 1: but now the Sooners, just like the Long Words, are
- 5:07Speaker 1: a win three and are trying to find their way
- 5:10Speaker 1: in the SEC. And those two are in an important
- 5:14Speaker 1: matchup on Wednesday night at Lloyd Dobles Center. And by
- 5:17Speaker 1: the way, I don't know if you've noticed, did you
- 5:20Speaker 1: see the tip off time for the game Wednesday?
- 5:23Speaker 2: I've noticed.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Did you notice on the itinerary what time we get
- 5:27Speaker 1: back home? It's the game ticks off tips off at
- 5:33Speaker 1: nine o'clock Central time, nine o'clock Central time.
- 5:37Speaker 2: That's ten Eastern. That's in the Eastern.
- 5:41Speaker 1: And this is what this is one of the byproducts,
- 5:46Speaker 1: one of the collateral things that happen when you join
- 5:53Speaker 1: a new league like the SEC, which has a lot
- 5:55Speaker 1: of Eastern time zoned teams, and what happens is television,
- 5:59Speaker 1: and of course ESPN is a slave to I mean,
- 6:04Speaker 1: the SEC is a slave to ESPN.
- 6:06Speaker 3: We know that.
- 6:07Speaker 1: And because of that, they want to have a triple
- 6:12Speaker 1: header on certain nights, including Wednesday. So there's a triple
- 6:16Speaker 1: header which would be at five o'clock Texas time, seven
- 6:19Speaker 1: o'clock Texas time, nine o'clock Texas time. And so they
- 6:24Speaker 1: you know, with the two teams, and two of the
- 6:26Speaker 1: teams in the Central time zone, there's more than just
- 6:28Speaker 1: those two that are in the Central time zone. Both
- 6:32Speaker 1: Mississippi's l s U, Texas A and m Arkansas Vanderbilt,
- 6:40Speaker 1: all of the all of those teams are in the
- 6:43Speaker 1: Central time Zone, but let's see Alabama and Auburn or
- 6:49Speaker 1: in the Central time zone. So in any event, as
- 6:56Speaker 1: it stands, it's it's one of those weird deals where
- 7:01Speaker 1: you know you're going to play at the time that
- 7:03Speaker 1: television assigns you to play. So for those who are
- 7:07Speaker 1: mad about the schedule there so that that's all established
- 7:10Speaker 1: by the SEC in conjunction with and in conversation consultation
- 7:17Speaker 1: with ESPN. So the game on Wednesday night is at
- 7:21Speaker 1: nine o'clock and it's an important game for both of
- 7:24Speaker 1: those teams. Neither side wants to go to Owen foreign
- 7:26Speaker 1: conference place. So that's Wednesday night at Lloyd Noble. Texas
- 7:29Speaker 1: women come off yesterday's test that they were unable to
- 7:34Speaker 1: pass against the number two team in the country. They
- 7:36Speaker 1: lost at South Carolina sixty seven to fifty in and
- 7:40Speaker 1: it had some of the most bizarre numbers that you'll
- 7:44Speaker 1: ever encounter, and looking at it, I couldn't believe it myself,
- 7:48Speaker 1: and I was calling the game. But we'll recap some
- 7:52Speaker 1: of those we have inconceivable coming up and in an
- 7:58Speaker 1: inconceivable we've got a story. You know, we didn't have
- 8:04Speaker 1: a show Friday because Friday was game Day. So on Friday,
- 8:08Speaker 1: you know, we usually a Florida man. Well, my wife
- 8:13Speaker 1: had a story brought to her attention about a Florida couple.
- 8:20Speaker 1: And this is as Florida man in Florida woman as
- 8:23Speaker 1: it gets because it involves robbery and defecation. Yeah, so
- 8:33Speaker 1: we'll have that coming up at Inconceivable. Plus, plus we
- 8:37Speaker 1: have the latest edition. It doesn't happen that often, but
- 8:41Speaker 1: it does happen from time to time, the latest edition
- 8:45Speaker 1: of the Inconceivable Craigway travel Story. And it happened yesterday
- 8:50Speaker 1: because and probably was a byproduct of all the travel
- 8:53Speaker 1: of the past several days and just some absolute abject dumbassery.
- 8:58Speaker 2: On my part.
- 8:59Speaker 3: But you know, I'll own it and we'll just live
- 9:02Speaker 3: with that. Just deal with that.
- 9:03Speaker 1: So that's coming to and Inconceivable. So understand we got that.
- 9:07Speaker 1: We're gonna hear from Rodney Terry Long Worn Men's Coach
- 9:10Speaker 1: coming up. We've got a lot of other things we'll
- 9:12Speaker 1: get to. We'll open up the text line for your questions,
- 9:15Speaker 1: your thoughts, your comments. All you have to do is
- 9:17Speaker 1: text the word Texas followed by your question or comment.
- 9:20Speaker 2: To eight one five three zero.
- 9:22Speaker 1: So you text the word Texas follow by your question
- 9:25Speaker 1: or comment to eight one five three zero. Standard messaging
- 9:28Speaker 1: and data rates me apply. And also the talkback feature
- 9:30Speaker 1: is available if you like to avail your voice to us.
- 9:34Speaker 1: All you have to do is have that working iHeartRadio
- 9:36Speaker 1: app downloaded onto your smartphone. Really easy to do. If
- 9:40Speaker 1: you don't have it, you just download it on there.
- 9:42Speaker 1: It's free, it's easy. Then you just do the little
- 9:44Speaker 1: search thing for AM thirteen under the Zone. It pops
- 9:48Speaker 1: right up. There's a little red button with a white
- 9:49Speaker 1: microphone in the middle. You tap that button, you can
- 9:52Speaker 1: leave us up to thirty seconds of a voice message went, yeah,
- 9:54Speaker 1: that was a dumb travel story, you d Greig, Or yeah,
- 9:57Speaker 1: I think the Cowboys should go after fill in the
- 9:59Speaker 1: blank whatever. That's how you do the talk back feature
- 10:01Speaker 1: as well. So we'll get to all that and more
- 10:02Speaker 1: coming up. It is a Monday here on sports Radio
- 10:05Speaker 1: AM thirteen under the Zone and where you always listen
- 10:07Speaker 1: to us for free on the iHeartRadio app.
- 10:15Speaker 4: It's the Craig Way Show with the voice of the
- 10:18Speaker 4: Texas Longhorns in Hall of Vain broadcast there.
- 10:22Speaker 3: Craig, We're glad of you with us on a Monday
- 10:36Speaker 3: afternoon here. I know the hurt and the wound are
- 10:40Speaker 3: probably still fresh for a lot of Longhorn fans as
- 10:43Speaker 3: to what happened on Friday night at the Cotton Bowl
- 10:46Speaker 3: in Dallas. In Arlington.
- 10:49Speaker 1: I'm with you, totally get it, totally understand it. I
- 10:56Speaker 1: think there's a lot of different perspectives, not only on
- 11:00Speaker 1: the game and how it ended, but there are those
- 11:03Speaker 1: who have kind of, you might say, combined or just
- 11:09Speaker 1: kind of molded the game and the way it ended
- 11:16Speaker 1: on Friday night into their perception of the season as
- 11:21Speaker 1: a whole. And that's where I would probably differ with
- 11:24Speaker 1: those folks who would do that, because I think they
- 11:26Speaker 1: are two separate things. One ended the other, but it
- 11:29Speaker 1: doesn't mean that the other was as tragic as the
- 11:34Speaker 1: ending of the first as.
- 11:38Speaker 2: You might imagined.
- 11:39Speaker 1: The game itself obviously looked for a long time as
- 11:43Speaker 1: though the Longhorns were not going to be able to
- 11:46Speaker 1: muster much offensively against that Ohio State defense, and then
- 11:50Speaker 1: the adjustments were made. Had the late first half drive
- 11:55Speaker 1: and then you had gut punched Number one the screen
- 11:58Speaker 1: to Trevion Henderson who takes it seventy five yards for
- 12:01Speaker 1: a touchdown. In the waiting seconds of the first half.
- 12:04Speaker 1: That was the first cut punch. Then the long ORNs
- 12:09Speaker 1: fight hard and score in the third quarter, get the
- 12:13Speaker 1: touchdown on the second pass to Jayden Blue to tie
- 12:19Speaker 1: the score. And I know some of you have noticed this,
- 12:23Speaker 1: but for those who had not, that was the first
- 12:27Speaker 1: third quarter touchdown for the Long Horns in six weeks,
- 12:30Speaker 1: in six games. Now, ironically, in all six of those
- 12:36Speaker 1: prior games they led all of them, and in all
- 12:40Speaker 1: but one the Arizona State game the Peach Bowl, they
- 12:43Speaker 1: scored at least a field goal in the third quarter,
- 12:45Speaker 1: but there were no offensive touchdowns in the third quarter
- 12:49Speaker 1: coming after the Florida game all the way through to
- 12:53Speaker 1: that Ohio State game. Also, in those six games, the
- 12:58Speaker 1: Long Worns won five of them. The only one that
- 13:01Speaker 1: they didn't win was the SEC Championship. Now that was
- 13:04Speaker 1: going up to the third quarter of the Cotton Bowl
- 13:07Speaker 1: and they get the touchdown to tie it, give up
- 13:10Speaker 1: the touchdown the fourth quarter, they fall behind twenty one
- 13:12Speaker 1: to fourteen. I know a lot of Long Run fans
- 13:16Speaker 1: who saw, especially those who were at the game and
- 13:17Speaker 1: could look up at the jumbo tron and see Colin
- 13:19Speaker 1: simmons jersey being grabbed and he's clearly held when he
- 13:24Speaker 1: could possibly have had a sack instead of turning into
- 13:26Speaker 1: an eighteen yard play on third down and ten.
- 13:29Speaker 2: I believe those things happen.
- 13:32Speaker 1: The college football game is an imperfect science, and officiating
- 13:36Speaker 1: is also that an imperfect science, and calls get missed,
- 13:41Speaker 1: and sometimes calls that should not have been called are called.
- 13:45Speaker 1: Those things happen. It is part of the game and
- 13:47Speaker 1: we're all subject to it. I suppose, as followers of
- 13:51Speaker 1: the game undawned, the long runs do start fighting back.
- 13:55Speaker 1: They hit some big passes won the Wingo and then
- 13:59Speaker 1: the other to Matthew Golden, and they get it down
- 14:03Speaker 1: there and then there's not one, but two pass interference
- 14:05Speaker 1: calls them back to back. It kind of reminded me
- 14:07Speaker 1: of I don't know if you remember this game the
- 14:09Speaker 1: Super Bowl, when the Rams played the Bengals. On that
- 14:11Speaker 1: final drive for the Rams, the Bengals kept committing pass
- 14:17Speaker 1: interference penalties right at there on Cooper Cup. They just
- 14:20Speaker 1: grabbing him, holding him, practically tackling him, and they just bam, bam,
- 14:23Speaker 1: Bam kept hitting him with the passing and then they
- 14:26Speaker 1: finally wound up throwing him a pass that he caught.
- 14:28Speaker 2: Anyway, in this.
- 14:30Speaker 1: Case, they get it down to the two yard line
- 14:33Speaker 1: and have a pass interference call. So now they got
- 14:35Speaker 1: first and goal with to one. And if it's too
- 14:38Speaker 1: painful for you to recap, I got you understanding. You know,
- 14:44Speaker 1: cover your ears or however you want to dismiss this,
- 14:47Speaker 1: but just to recap it, they bring in the jumbo
- 14:51Speaker 1: package and they have Jermaine Lolay back there.
- 14:54Speaker 2: They have a big, big defensive.
- 14:57Speaker 1: Lineman there as blocking backs, and they give it to
- 15:00Speaker 1: Eric Gibson. I've looked at it a couple of different times. Yes,
- 15:02Speaker 1: it does look I know some folks thought this that
- 15:05Speaker 1: Gibson kind of cut away from the blocks. He kind
- 15:08Speaker 1: of turned back inside a little bit, but it was
- 15:10Speaker 1: between the two blocks. But the second block did not
- 15:12Speaker 1: come through the way they wanted, so as a result
- 15:15Speaker 1: of that, he gets tackled short of the goal line.
- 15:18Speaker 1: Now it's second down. I also know the sentiments of
- 15:21Speaker 1: many saying, you just pounded away four times at the
- 15:25Speaker 1: one yard line and if you don't get it in,
- 15:28Speaker 1: then you said we didn't deserve to win. Well, if
- 15:30Speaker 1: you don't get it in from the one yard line
- 15:32Speaker 1: on four downs, no matter what downs you use, you
- 15:38Speaker 1: didn't deserve to win anyway, regardless of how you spind
- 15:42Speaker 1: the downs. Clearly, Sark felt that Ohio State's number one
- 15:51Speaker 1: run defense and number one defense in the red zone
- 15:55Speaker 1: was going to be as tough against the run as
- 15:57Speaker 1: long runs have been down like they were against Arizona.
- 16:00Speaker 1: Stayed in against Texas A and M against the run,
- 16:02Speaker 1: and that's why they went with the pitch out, which
- 16:05Speaker 1: you had one player miss a block. Caleb Downs makes
- 16:07Speaker 1: a great play just shooting through the gap and Trey
- 16:12Speaker 1: Wisner gets trapped for a seven yard loss. Now it's
- 16:16Speaker 1: third down. You get a tip pass when Wingo looked
- 16:20Speaker 1: like he might be open for a moment, but it
- 16:22Speaker 1: was tip. And then it brings up the fourth down,
- 16:24Speaker 1: and again it was another miss block and yours gets hit,
- 16:28Speaker 1: ball comes loose, and the most catastrophic of all results
- 16:31Speaker 1: because even if you just sacked there and Ohio State
- 16:34Speaker 1: takes over, you still have your timeouts, and the two
- 16:39Speaker 1: minute timeout could have perhaps pinned him back and forced
- 16:41Speaker 1: to punch.
- 16:41Speaker 3: You never know.
- 16:43Speaker 1: But the worst of all possible outcomes. Obviously, the Strip
- 16:46Speaker 1: sacked the fumble, the eighty three yard return for the
- 16:48Speaker 1: touchdown by Jack Sawyer, and that was it. So there's
- 16:52Speaker 1: a lot of ways to analyze it and talk about it.
- 16:55Speaker 1: There's a lot of fault finding that that's part of
- 16:57Speaker 1: the game, and as fans, you have every right in
- 17:01Speaker 1: the world to play that blame game. It's the easiest
- 17:05Speaker 1: thing in the world is to second guest when you
- 17:06Speaker 1: get at the one yard line too, when things don't
- 17:09Speaker 1: go right. Even then, when not at the one yard line,
- 17:13Speaker 1: hindsight's always twenty twenty. It's always going to be that way,
- 17:15Speaker 1: and it's okay to speculate. I think sargets that everybody
- 17:19Speaker 1: understands that he stands by what he went for, but
- 17:25Speaker 1: it wasn't properly executed and as a result they wind
- 17:27Speaker 1: up losing the game. Now here's the part where I
- 17:30Speaker 1: was talking about where it rolls back differently from the
- 17:37Speaker 1: season itself. It's incredibly disappointing, obviously, and it was really
- 17:45Speaker 1: cool to see a lot of Longhorn fans so excited
- 17:52Speaker 1: there and it was a decided home field advantage to
- 17:56Speaker 1: the car. When you say so, Cam, you were in
- 17:57Speaker 1: there when you say.
- 17:59Speaker 2: I think we did.
- 18:00Speaker 3: When I first walked into EIGHTE and D Stadium, it
- 18:03Speaker 3: felt like I was a DKR, not a burn Orange
- 18:06Speaker 3: on both sides of the field.
- 18:08Speaker 2: Agreed.
- 18:09Speaker 1: And so for those who say Texas fans are just
- 18:16Speaker 1: T shirt fans or this or that, and it'll show blah
- 18:18Speaker 1: blah blah. Those of you who are there pat yourself
- 18:20Speaker 1: on the back. You did a heck of a job.
- 18:24Speaker 1: You made a lot of noise, and I know the
- 18:26Speaker 1: players and the coaching staff appreciated.
- 18:28Speaker 3: It as well.
- 18:30Speaker 1: So that just means there's that much angst, heartbreak, disappointment,
- 18:35Speaker 1: disillusionmant in some cases anger, frustration, all of those things
- 18:40Speaker 1: about how it ended then, and that's totally understandable. I
- 18:46Speaker 1: would differ with those who think it is micro cosmic
- 18:51Speaker 1: of the season. You don't win thirteen games and fifteen
- 18:54Speaker 1: tries going into that contest without doing the vast majority
- 18:59Speaker 1: of things directly in terms of the coaching, in terms
- 19:03Speaker 1: of the play calling, in terms of the execution, all
- 19:06Speaker 1: of it. This is the season to be proud of.
- 19:09Speaker 1: This is back to back final fours for this team.
- 19:12Speaker 1: And for those who want to throw some stones, go ahead,
- 19:15Speaker 1: but understand. The program that you're throwing the stones at
- 19:18Speaker 1: right now is twenty five and five of the past
- 19:21Speaker 1: two years, twenty five and five back to back trips
- 19:26Speaker 1: to the Final four, including having to earn their way
- 19:28Speaker 1: back to the Final four this year by winning a
- 19:29Speaker 1: first round game and a Peach Bawl quarterfinal to get there.
- 19:35Speaker 1: They were the only ones from the four teams that
- 19:37Speaker 1: were in the playoff last year even to get into
- 19:39Speaker 1: the twelve team, let alone the final four. So they
- 19:43Speaker 1: have a lot to be proud of. Satisfied, No, of course,
- 19:46Speaker 1: not still ways to go, and they're still building.
- 19:51Speaker 3: And I would just say this, I don't know if
- 19:52Speaker 3: you saw it on social.
- 19:53Speaker 1: Media's Nick Benito, the former Sooner, just kind of clowning
- 19:57Speaker 1: Michael taff Or, letting out a a primal scream of
- 20:01Speaker 1: anguish and frustration on his way to the locker room
- 20:05Speaker 1: and and and getting emotional. And then there's Nick Benito
- 20:09Speaker 1: getting interviewed yesterday after loss to the Bills, and he's
- 20:11Speaker 1: getting choked up, you know, and and you know it's
- 20:18Speaker 1: a little bit different in both cases. One's making more noise, yeah,
- 20:22Speaker 1: but the other one is supposedly the older veteran pro
- 20:25Speaker 1: I think there's nothing wrong with either situation of being
- 20:30Speaker 1: choked up or expressing frustrations. You pour so much of yourself,
- 20:36Speaker 1: your heart and soul. We visited with Taff. Taff wasn't
- 20:40Speaker 1: in the general news conference. He did visit with us
- 20:42Speaker 1: on the postgame, and he and his voice was shaky,
- 20:46Speaker 1: and he was and he was upset with himself and
- 20:49Speaker 1: and and the how. But he was also very very
- 20:52Speaker 1: proud of the season and of his coaches and of
- 20:55Speaker 1: his teammates. And that says a lot, not only about
- 20:58Speaker 1: him and the kind of guy he is, because he
- 21:00Speaker 1: is that kind of guide, but not only that, but
- 21:02Speaker 1: also about this football program. So if you are indeed
- 21:06Speaker 1: a true fan of all of that, then I would say,
- 21:12Speaker 1: you know, take some pride in what this football team accomplished.
- 21:18Speaker 1: Nobody said they've arrived or anything like that. But in
- 21:24Speaker 1: terms of that what had become the age old question,
- 21:26Speaker 1: are they back? I would say back in terms of
- 21:29Speaker 1: being an annual contender. With the signing classes coming in,
- 21:33Speaker 1: with what they have coming back, with what they're building on,
- 21:37Speaker 1: it's a reason to be pretty optimistic about what's to
- 21:39Speaker 1: come in the future. All Right, Coming up next, we
- 21:44Speaker 1: have inconceivable, a couple of bizarre stories, and then just
- 21:49Speaker 1: to kind of dumb travel story on my part, but
- 21:53Speaker 1: it does kind of fall into the inconceivable file. That's
- 21:56Speaker 1: next here on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone,
- 21:58Speaker 1: Craig Way alongside the producer and Parker Glad to have
- 22:01Speaker 1: you with us, and a lot to get to more.
- 22:06Speaker 1: Obviously on the Long Worn season, we'll hear from Randy
- 22:08Speaker 1: Terry with regard to Long Worn Basketball, and a couple
- 22:10Speaker 1: other interesting takes on pro football, including the change that
- 22:17Speaker 1: is apparently not only imminent but I guess you might
- 22:24Speaker 1: say not only emminent but official with regard to Mike McCarthy.
- 22:33Speaker 1: He is not going to return as the Cowboys head
- 22:35Speaker 1: coach in twenty twenty five. Jerry Jones made that announcement today.
- 22:42Speaker 1: They had that exclusive negotiating window with him until tomorrow
- 22:48Speaker 1: at midnight, but he said, over the past week, Mike
- 22:50Speaker 1: and I had the opportunity anyway, Mike and I had
- 22:53Speaker 1: the opportunity to conduct a joint review of all aspects
- 22:56Speaker 1: of the past season, our players and staff, and also
- 22:58Speaker 1: spent considerable time discussing seeing the road forward for the team.
- 23:02Speaker 1: These discussions were thorough and received an appropriate amount of
- 23:05Speaker 1: time and depth to cover prior to reaching the point
- 23:08Speaker 1: of contract negotiations, though it became mutually clear that it
- 23:11Speaker 1: would be better for each of us to head in
- 23:12Speaker 1: a different direction. I think Mike and I wish him,
- 23:14Speaker 1: his wife, Jessica, and their family the best. They've been
- 23:16Speaker 1: a wonderful part of our community here, and Jones added,
- 23:20Speaker 1: the Cowboys will begin the search for the next head
- 23:22Speaker 1: coach immediately. So I know which you're thinking in many
- 23:27Speaker 1: of Cowboys times, Why did it take this long and
- 23:29Speaker 1: get to this point?
- 23:31Speaker 3: Never even should have hired him in the first place.
- 23:33Speaker 3: But also a lot of this is to blame on
- 23:36Speaker 3: Jerry Jones in the front office. I mean, Mike McCarthy
- 23:40Speaker 3: was set up to fail this season. The roster got worse,
- 23:42Speaker 3: they did not put any more money into it. Their
- 23:45Speaker 3: big free agency acquisition was Eric Kendricks, linebacker passed his
- 23:49Speaker 3: prime who was signed just because of his relationship with
- 23:52Speaker 3: Mike Simmer and the Vikings injuries to not help of course,
- 23:56Speaker 3: Dak Prescott going down, Trevon Diggs was injured to got
- 24:00Speaker 3: injured before offensive line had issues. I mean, my biggest
- 24:06Speaker 3: concern going into the season Craig was you bring back McCarthy,
- 24:09Speaker 3: but nothing else changed in terms of the roster. Roster
- 24:12Speaker 3: got worse. The coaching, I don't think it really changed
- 24:16Speaker 3: much going from dan Quinn to Mike Zimmer. I don't
- 24:18Speaker 3: think Zimmer had the right personnel on this team that
- 24:21Speaker 3: he would like to have had. I mean, this roster
- 24:23Speaker 3: was kind of built for dan Quinn of his defense,
- 24:25Speaker 3: and I think we saw that throughout the year.
- 24:26Speaker 2: The Cowboys defense.
- 24:27Speaker 3: Was all right, and then of course on the offensive end,
- 24:31Speaker 3: the running back room maybe the worst running back room
- 24:34Speaker 3: in NFL history. Their big move was design Zekiel Elliott
- 24:38Speaker 3: and Dalvin Cook. I don't know if Dalvin Cook even
- 24:40Speaker 3: got to carry for Dallas this season. Zeke ended up
- 24:43Speaker 3: getting cut so he could join the Chargers, who got eliminated.
- 24:47Speaker 2: By the Houston Texans. Shout out to Houston Texans graduations
- 24:50Speaker 2: playoff victory.
- 24:50Speaker 3: So all of this, you know, you know, I took
- 24:53Speaker 3: about Mike McCarthy and I don't think he was the
- 24:55Speaker 3: right higher at all. But also the front office let
- 24:58Speaker 3: him down as well. It remains to be seeing who
- 25:01Speaker 3: this next head coach is, but he's gonna have a
- 25:05Speaker 3: tough test because it does appear that the Cowboys had
- 25:09Speaker 3: the same plan going into this offseason as they did
- 25:11Speaker 3: last season, which is, we're not going to spend money,
- 25:14Speaker 3: We're gonna cut corners. We're gonna hope that some of
- 25:16Speaker 3: the players that you know, we drafted are going to
- 25:18Speaker 3: be able to turn into Pro bowlers and develop them.
- 25:22Speaker 3: And sure, that's good, but you know, when you have
- 25:25Speaker 3: a season like this where injuries start to mount up
- 25:27Speaker 3: and all of a sudden, your death is being tested
- 25:30Speaker 3: and guys who shouldn't be starting on the NFL level
- 25:32Speaker 3: are starting, it's reflected when your team is getting blown out.
- 25:35Speaker 1: Honestly, each way, each week you said that Mike McCarthy
- 25:40Speaker 1: was set up to fail. Who was more set up
- 25:42Speaker 1: to fail, Mike McCarthy or Gerrod Mayo.
- 25:45Speaker 3: Oh, that's a that's a really good question. I would
- 25:49Speaker 3: say Cowboys definitely. I think have a better roster and
- 25:56Speaker 3: and Mayo had never been a head coach. Yeah, but yeah,
- 25:58Speaker 3: Mayo was put in a spot and even Robber Kraft
- 26:00Speaker 3: admitted he was put in the spot where he was
- 26:02Speaker 3: felt he was not going to succeed. He was obviously
- 26:04Speaker 3: not ready to be head coach, that's for sure. I
- 26:08Speaker 3: think you know, McCarthy at least took Dallas to the
- 26:10Speaker 3: playoffs a couple of times. Right, never got a playoff
- 26:13Speaker 3: win though, But for Mayo, I mean, the Patriots were
- 26:16Speaker 3: just awful and the coaching was awful.
- 26:18Speaker 2: But Cowoys had a better roster, So that's good. That's
- 26:21Speaker 2: a good question.
- 26:22Speaker 1: Is Okay, let me hit you with his follow up
- 26:25Speaker 1: who is better suited to at this point on January thirteenth,
- 26:32Speaker 1: Who is better suited that of a better twenty twenty
- 26:35Speaker 1: five season. The Patriots with Mike Vrabel or the Cowboys
- 26:38Speaker 1: with head coach to be named.
- 26:40Speaker 2: I think the Patriots.
- 26:41Speaker 3: I think Rabe was going to get in there and
- 26:44Speaker 3: he's going to clean that place up pretty quickly. I
- 26:47Speaker 3: think Drake may is going to have a fantastic second
- 26:49Speaker 3: season if Rabel can hire the right offensive coordinator and
- 26:54Speaker 3: they go after like say, I don't know, T Higgins,
- 26:57Speaker 3: they got top ten draft pick. We'll see if they
- 26:59Speaker 3: go skill player, offensive line, maybe defense. I mean, I
- 27:04Speaker 3: think with the Cowboys roster there's still good enough to
- 27:08Speaker 3: be a playoff team. Maybe not the Patriots, but I
- 27:12Speaker 3: would trust the Patriots and Mike, I mean Mike Rabile
- 27:14Speaker 3: turn Tennessee around quickly right led him to an AFC
- 27:16Speaker 3: Championship game with Ryan Tannehill right at quarterback, and their
- 27:20Speaker 3: defense was phenomenal and just unfortunately for the Titans. You know,
- 27:24Speaker 3: they made a Brandon dead move by moving on for him.
- 27:26Speaker 3: And I don't think him and the GM got along
- 27:28Speaker 3: very well. But I think fra will if he can
- 27:31Speaker 3: win a Tennessee, he can win in New England. I
- 27:33Speaker 3: would just say New England. Okay, all right, So it
- 27:35Speaker 3: begs this question.
- 27:36Speaker 1: And I also can open it up on the on
- 27:38Speaker 1: the text line for those who have questions about this.
- 27:42Speaker 1: Who would you want to see be the Cowboys next
- 27:44Speaker 1: head coach? And I'll offer that up. You want to
- 27:48Speaker 1: throw it in on the tax line, you can do it.
- 27:50Speaker 1: All you have to do is text the word Texas
- 27:52Speaker 1: followed by your opinion on who the Cowboys next head.
- 27:56Speaker 2: Coach should be.
- 27:58Speaker 1: And you know to eight one five three zero standard
- 28:02Speaker 1: messaging and data race may apply.
- 28:03Speaker 3: Anybody just leap off the page engine. Unfortunately they've all
- 28:06Speaker 3: been hired. Yeah, Belichicks, Well, I asked the question Sean Payton. Yeah,
- 28:11Speaker 3: I would have loved those guys. Mike Frable would have
- 28:13Speaker 3: loved him as well. Out of the guys remaining, I
- 28:17Speaker 3: think you got to have a head coach who understands
- 28:20Speaker 3: the Cowboys circus. So I wouldn't be opposed to Dean
- 28:23Speaker 3: Sanders just because I think he understands the media circus
- 28:26Speaker 3: very well, and he knows Jerry Jones farewell in that family.
- 28:30Speaker 3: Jason Witten, I know he knows it. Again, it concerns
- 28:33Speaker 3: me going from private school to the NFL. Now, maybe
- 28:37Speaker 3: he makes the right hires defensively and offensively. In terms
- 28:40Speaker 3: of coordinator spots, I would not want to see Kellen
- 28:42Speaker 3: Moore as the next head coach.
- 28:45Speaker 1: Even though he's got an NFL assistant coaching experience, which
- 28:48Speaker 1: the other two guys do not have.
- 28:49Speaker 3: He does, but he also has a fantastic offensive line,
- 28:54Speaker 3: a top two running back in Saquon Barkley, a top
- 28:57Speaker 3: five receiver in aj Brown, and he's got Dallas Goddard
- 29:01Speaker 3: who was phenomenal yesterday, and Devonte Smith and Jalen Hurts
- 29:05Speaker 3: is a good quarterback. So I don't you know, I
- 29:08Speaker 3: think this the thing with a lot of his coordinator position.
- 29:10Speaker 3: Craig is like, oh, go ahead and hire Ben Johnson,
- 29:13Speaker 3: go ahead and hire this oc or that ocok how
- 29:15Speaker 3: good their offense was. Well, also look at how good
- 29:17Speaker 3: the roster was too. Like the thing that worries me
- 29:19Speaker 3: about Ben Johnson and hiring him from Detroit is Detroit's
- 29:23Speaker 3: got a fantastic offensive line, a great quarterback who can
- 29:25Speaker 3: manage the game well, and then you've got fantastic skill players,
- 29:28Speaker 3: you know. So if you go from something like that
- 29:30Speaker 3: to a different a different team who might not be
- 29:34Speaker 3: as talented will there'd be a big drop off that
- 29:36Speaker 3: concerns me. Like if Ben Johnson went from the Detroit
- 29:38Speaker 3: offense the Las Vegas offense, I don't think it would
- 29:41Speaker 3: work out well. But go back to your answer, it's tough, Craig,
- 29:48Speaker 3: I think I don't. I think these who I want,
- 29:51Speaker 3: who Jerry's gonna hire is cann be vastly different.
- 29:53Speaker 1: Sure, that's why I asked you, because we know Jerry's
- 29:56Speaker 1: going to probably do something different.
- 29:58Speaker 2: I wouldn't mind Ben Johnson, I think.
- 30:00Speaker 1: With Well, as long as you're talking to Troy, what
- 30:03Speaker 1: about Aaron Glenn?
- 30:05Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 30:06Speaker 1: Is he not ready for the next step? There are
- 30:07Speaker 1: those who say he is based on what he's done,
- 30:10Speaker 1: and there are those who say he's no better than
- 30:11Speaker 1: Todd Bowles.
- 30:13Speaker 2: You can argue that it depends on and.
- 30:16Speaker 1: Had a nice season with Tampa Bay, but it ended
- 30:19Speaker 1: last night with an unexpected law home playoff loss to Washington,
- 30:24Speaker 1: So you know, is is it because of that? He
- 30:28Speaker 1: is he hit the ceiling. Here's another thing, Mike Tomlin.
- 30:32Speaker 1: There folks who say he's gone stale and it's worn
- 30:34Speaker 1: out in Pittsburgh.
- 30:36Speaker 2: He's not had a.
- 30:37Speaker 1: Losing season, but been a long time since he's had
- 30:41Speaker 1: him make a deep run in the playoffs. So this
- 30:43Speaker 1: was a piece of sound from I guess it was
- 30:46Speaker 1: from yesterday's NFL NFL Today programming and or Fox NFL
- 30:54Speaker 1: Sunday and what it's Terry Bradshaw and Jimmy Johnson and
- 31:01Speaker 1: Michael Strahan, right, and they're talking about this Cowboys situation
- 31:04Speaker 1: that they're talking about Pittsburgh as well. Listen, listen to
- 31:08Speaker 1: this conversation from these guys talking about a theory that
- 31:14Speaker 1: Jimmy would have about Pittsburgh and Dallas Houston.
- 31:17Speaker 5: I can't get over the game last night when you
- 31:20Speaker 5: saw the Baltimore Ravens beat Pittsburgh Steelers. Steelers now lost
- 31:24Speaker 5: five straight games. I mean, that's just unheard of defense
- 31:27Speaker 5: was horrible, couldn't stop the run, couldn't stop the pass,
- 31:30Speaker 5: couldn't do.
- 31:31Speaker 2: Anything right last night.
- 31:33Speaker 6: And honestly, Jimmy.
- 31:35Speaker 2: I'd have to go to you. You can't lose playoff games.
- 31:37Speaker 5: This doesn't look anything like the Steeler teams we've seen. Yeah, yeah,
- 31:41Speaker 5: Terry Dow, I've got no inside information, but you know,
- 31:44Speaker 5: things are stale in Pittsburgh, things are stale in Dallas,
- 31:49Speaker 5: and just food for thought. How about a coaching swamp.
- 31:53Speaker 5: Mike McCarthy's a Pittsburgh guy. Let him go to Pittsburgh,
- 31:56Speaker 5: Mike Tomlin go to Dallas. Both franchises would be excited.
- 32:00Speaker 6: But then the only problem med that.
- 32:01Speaker 4: I mean you said he both stale, but one continues
- 32:03Speaker 4: to make the playoffs and the other one does it.
- 32:05Speaker 4: That's not scale having more success.
- 32:08Speaker 1: Michael, all right, that's not entirely true. The Cowboys were
- 32:12Speaker 1: the number two seed last year in the playoffs, number
- 32:16Speaker 1: two in the NFC. Now they got beat in the
- 32:18Speaker 1: first round by Green Bay. So this thing about continuing
- 32:21Speaker 1: to not make the playoffs is not correct. That's why
- 32:24Speaker 1: I've always said that when long worn fans gripe, make
- 32:28Speaker 1: sure you have your facts in order. And correct before
- 32:32Speaker 1: you take shots off of that, understand and don't in
- 32:35Speaker 1: the case of straight and he's doing it, you know
- 32:37Speaker 1: obviously for a television program. What would you think about
- 32:40Speaker 1: Mike Tomlin if Pittsburgh was tired of him?
- 32:42Speaker 2: Would you want him? Would you want him to in Dallas?
- 32:44Speaker 2: I love Mike tom but I don't think he could
- 32:45Speaker 2: mesh with Jerry Jones. Are you kidding me?
- 32:47Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 32:47Speaker 3: Yeah, I know, I know.
- 32:50Speaker 1: So there was that, okay, And and by the way,
- 32:52Speaker 1: this I heard this sound this morning when I was
- 32:55Speaker 1: driving around and running some Marens, like running over the
- 32:58Speaker 1: the rental car plation all that, and I heard Mike
- 33:01Speaker 1: Hardball hard play that piece of sound. And that's why
- 33:03Speaker 1: I wanted to reair it. If you were listening to
- 33:05Speaker 1: the Morning kick Off, you heard Mike run it. And
- 33:07Speaker 1: then Harje also did this one.
- 33:10Speaker 2: This had me laughing.
- 33:12Speaker 1: This is Rex Ryan who still believes he has a
- 33:14Speaker 1: shot to be the Jets head coach, I guess for
- 33:17Speaker 1: some reason. And he was asked he was asked about
- 33:21Speaker 1: Vrabel taking the New England job.
- 33:23Speaker 5: The Coach of the Year in twenty twenty one is
- 33:25Speaker 5: forty nine years old, will be fifty when next season begins, Rex,
- 33:28Speaker 5: what's your reaction.
- 33:29Speaker 4: Hey man, I mean, hopefully I get to kick this
- 33:32Speaker 4: guy's ask twice a year.
- 33:33Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 33:40Speaker 5: Maybe your team, not my team, yes, but not me personally,
- 33:46Speaker 5: not him personally.
- 33:46Speaker 1: I don't think he could take Mike Rabel if he
- 33:48Speaker 1: wanton on one to get I don't think he could
- 33:53Speaker 1: off of that. All right, we'll get some more of
- 33:54Speaker 1: your submissions.
- 33:55Speaker 2: Again.
- 33:56Speaker 1: You have a suggestion, who would you want to see
- 33:58Speaker 1: as the Cowboys head coach? I we'll talk more about that.
- 34:01Speaker 1: We're also going to hear from Roddy Terry, Texas men's
- 34:03Speaker 1: basketball coach. We had a lot to get too. Still
- 34:05Speaker 1: here on the program on AM thirteen.
- 34:07Speaker 6: Under the Zone, We're back.
- 34:12Speaker 4: It's the Craig Way Show with Hall of Fame broadcaster
- 34:15Speaker 4: and voice of the Texas Longhearts Craig Way.
- 34:38Speaker 1: With you on a Monday afternoon here on AM thirteen
- 34:43Speaker 1: hundred Zone, when I was engaged in the text exchange
- 34:49Speaker 1: with the texter or said on how well Texas played
- 34:53Speaker 1: this season against the week SEC scheduled. The bottom line
- 34:57Speaker 1: is to try to win the games and if they
- 34:59Speaker 1: want to all the other games, all of the other
- 35:03Speaker 1: games that they played. They still you know, they won
- 35:08Speaker 1: thirteen games. It's going to because how else would you
- 35:10Speaker 1: characterize it. They played the games on their schedule. They
- 35:12Speaker 1: won the games on the schedule. Anyway, the reason I
- 35:15Speaker 1: was responding to that, and then somebody else said the
- 35:17Speaker 1: just texted and said, the chances that your team actually
- 35:20Speaker 1: wins a championship are low, so you have to enjoy
- 35:23Speaker 1: the ride. It's part of being a fan. It could
- 35:26Speaker 1: be so much worse. I couldn't agree more. And if
- 35:29Speaker 1: you've been a fan for some time, you know this.
- 35:33Speaker 1: You know this no matter what team you root for.
- 35:36Speaker 1: But for the purposes of this conversation, you'd have to
- 35:41Speaker 1: do it as I mean, you were a student at Texas,
- 35:43Speaker 1: and you were a student at Texas when things were
- 35:46Speaker 1: not so great on the football field, right, you.
- 35:49Speaker 3: Could say that craig first year was Texas is back,
- 35:54Speaker 3: shout out Joe Tests when they were in fact not back.
- 35:58Speaker 3: And then of course five and I was there through
- 36:01Speaker 3: Tom Herman's tenure as well, and the highlighted.
- 36:05Speaker 1: And here's the thing. Here's the thing about Tom Herman.
- 36:07Speaker 1: He had four seasons here, did not have a losing record,
- 36:10Speaker 1: and won four bowl games. But the high water mark
- 36:14Speaker 1: was that one New Year six Sugar Bowl win over Georgia.
- 36:19Speaker 2: That was it.
- 36:20Speaker 1: And before then it's Alamo Bowls. There's a Texas Bowl
- 36:23Speaker 1: and an Alamo Bowl, and there's other Alimo ball I mean,
- 36:25Speaker 1: it just it didn't plateau the way this has and
- 36:29Speaker 1: crescendo the last two years, is my point.
- 36:31Speaker 3: And I think people forget too Craig that not to
- 36:34Speaker 3: strip anything away from that team, because that was a
- 36:36Speaker 3: fantastic team that did beat George and the Sugar Bowl
- 36:38Speaker 3: and they were the better team, but they also got
- 36:41Speaker 3: into that Sugar Bowl because Oklahoma got an automatic bid
- 36:43Speaker 3: into the College Football Playoff. Texas would have been I
- 36:46Speaker 3: think likely Craig either playing in the Almo Bowl or
- 36:50Speaker 3: maybe they put in the Alma Bowl that year if
- 36:52Speaker 3: not for the Oklahoma winning the Big Twelve.
- 36:54Speaker 2: So there you go.
- 36:56Speaker 1: So that's I think that's the perspective that I was
- 37:00Speaker 1: trying to make about here. Remember where they were pretty recently.
- 37:03Speaker 1: I'm not talking two decades ago or whatever. I'm talking
- 37:07Speaker 1: about within the last six seven years and leading up
- 37:11Speaker 1: to win, Sark took over. So I'm just saying bear
- 37:16Speaker 1: that in mind as you try to evaluate not only
- 37:21Speaker 1: this season, but what's happened in the past two years
- 37:23Speaker 1: where this team has gone twenty five and five, won
- 37:25Speaker 1: a conference championship, been in the final four two years
- 37:29Speaker 1: in a row, and beat two conference champions in the
- 37:34Speaker 1: playoffs this year.
- 37:36Speaker 3: Knocking on the door, Sarcas, Texas knocking on the door,
- 37:39Speaker 3: and yeah you can. You can nitpick and go back
- 37:42Speaker 3: to the two failed drives and one against Washington and
- 37:45Speaker 3: one against Ohio State. But also Texas is right there
- 37:50Speaker 3: and it's not like crag that this it's going away
- 37:52Speaker 3: anytime soon. The waist Sark has built this program up
- 37:55Speaker 3: and the way he's recruited and use the transfer portal
- 37:58Speaker 3: and brought in this coaches there, Texas is in a
- 38:01Speaker 3: fantastic spot to be right back there again next season,
- 38:04Speaker 3: in the year after that and going forward.
- 38:06Speaker 1: Okay, a couple of things, A couple of things on
- 38:09Speaker 1: the tech line. Somebody said let's get Sark for Dallas.
- 38:12Speaker 1: Someone had to say it. I hope that's not the case.
- 38:16Speaker 1: And I don't think. I don't think Jerry Jones is
- 38:19Speaker 1: Sarks kind of guy, as is me. But is Sark
- 38:26Speaker 1: good enough, qualified enough? I think the coach in the NFL.
- 38:28Speaker 1: Of course I do, but I hope he hope he doesn't.
- 38:31Speaker 1: Hope he sticks around.
- 38:32Speaker 3: I think we would we would have known by now
- 38:34Speaker 3: Craig if he was wanting to get back into the NFL. Yeah,
- 38:39Speaker 3: and siding that we've already heard stuff about Dion's camp
- 38:41Speaker 3: reaching out to the Raiders, we have not heard anything
- 38:44Speaker 3: about that from Sark. NFL is a completely different animal
- 38:47Speaker 3: and the Cowboys are in their own different tier. As
- 38:49Speaker 3: we already have covered on this program many times.
- 38:53Speaker 1: Somebody said, what happened the night before last we're talking
- 38:55Speaker 1: about the I think the satellite dropout. So tried listening
- 38:59Speaker 1: to a portable ready one of the radio stations in Austin,
- 39:01Speaker 1: but couldn't. My driver try to pick you up on
- 39:03Speaker 1: one of the stations in Dallas, but cannot find you either. Now,
- 39:06Speaker 1: we were on ten eighty AM in Dallas on kild
- 39:11Speaker 1: But they could well have been afflicted by the same
- 39:14Speaker 1: satellite issues that happened there intermittently, that happened during the
- 39:18Speaker 1: Cotton Bowl and then during the postgame show as well,
- 39:20Speaker 1: And I would say that might have been what you
- 39:23Speaker 1: encountered with some satellite issues. I'm not one hundred percent
- 39:27Speaker 1: certain about that, but that's possible that it could be
- 39:30Speaker 1: that all right with long worn basketball. Texas, of course,
- 39:37Speaker 1: has played two close games against the number two and
- 39:40Speaker 1: number one team in the country, but they didn't win
- 39:42Speaker 1: either game. And in the post game on Saturday against Tennessee,
- 39:50Speaker 1: I was talking about those two games, the five point
- 39:54Speaker 1: loss to Auburn, number two in the country, and the
- 39:57Speaker 1: four point loss to number one Tennessee. Now Tennessee has
- 40:00Speaker 1: since dropped out of the number one spot after losing
- 40:04Speaker 1: to Florida a few nights prior to that, but it
- 40:11Speaker 1: was two close calls against two really good teams. First
- 40:15Speaker 1: time Texas had ever played number two in the country
- 40:17Speaker 1: number one in the country.
- 40:18Speaker 2: I'm back to back games, and in.
- 40:21Speaker 1: The evaluation of it, I referred to it as a
- 40:24Speaker 1: gut punch, and then I stop myself. Talked about the
- 40:27Speaker 1: gut punch last year, and I said, I might be
- 40:29Speaker 1: feeling a little PTSD. I said from last night meeting
- 40:33Speaker 1: Friday night in Arlington with gut punches because of the
- 40:37Speaker 1: way it went down. Disappointment, yes, and trying to build
- 40:42Speaker 1: off that going to Oklahoma. So Rodney Terry was asked
- 40:45Speaker 1: first and foremost on a couple of injury updates. We
- 40:49Speaker 1: knew on Saturday that Kenda Weaver was going to be
- 40:53Speaker 1: out and definitely. In fact, Rodney mentioned it on Longhorn Weekly,
- 40:58Speaker 1: which we recorded on Wednesday night and it aired on
- 41:00Speaker 1: Thursday night last week. Now we're back into a regular
- 41:03Speaker 1: Thursday night live six o'clock at Plucker's Mode, and so
- 41:09Speaker 1: this Thursday night at six o'clock will be live from
- 41:11Speaker 1: Pluckers at six o'clock the West Campus location at twenty
- 41:14Speaker 1: two twenty two Reo Grand And in the show on
- 41:19Speaker 1: last week, Rodney said, coming out of that Auburn game,
- 41:22Speaker 1: that's when Kenda Weaver hurt his hip area. It's like
- 41:26Speaker 1: a hip flexer thing, and they put an indefinite tag
- 41:29Speaker 1: on it because they don't know how long it could be.
- 41:32Speaker 1: Could be two weeks, three weeks depending. It's kind of
- 41:34Speaker 1: almost like that oblique thing. You just don't know. The
- 41:37Speaker 1: only thing that can heal it is rest and then
- 41:40Speaker 1: eventually some flexibility exercise things, and Warren Young the team
- 41:46Speaker 1: trainer and Darby Rich the strength coach, they'll work with.
- 41:50Speaker 2: Him on that.
- 41:51Speaker 1: But he's out and definitely, and then Tremont and Mark
- 41:53Speaker 1: got banged up, but came back into the ball game.
- 41:55Speaker 1: So the first question that went to Rodney Terry this
- 41:59Speaker 1: morning on the media zoom was how about updates on
- 42:04Speaker 1: Kendal Weaver and from my market, if they aren't able
- 42:06Speaker 1: to play against Oklahoma, how will this affect the rotation?
- 42:10Speaker 7: Treymond was back to practice today and had a really
- 42:13Speaker 7: good practice for us today. So uh I wanted for
- 42:15Speaker 7: him to be pretty much for a tilt uh come
- 42:18Speaker 7: come Wednesday night.
- 42:20Speaker 6: Uh.
- 42:20Speaker 7: Ware did a great job with him, Uh yesterday in
- 42:23Speaker 7: the recovery and rehabit and all that good stuff. Kendall
- 42:27Speaker 7: Weaver will will not be available still. You know he's uh,
- 42:31Speaker 7: he's sustained an interest. It's gonna take a little time
- 42:34Speaker 7: uh to get him back. Uh you know, one hundred percent. Uh.
- 42:38Speaker 7: In regards to playing other young players, UH, I do
- 42:42Speaker 7: like the way our young guys are practicing and competing.
- 42:46Speaker 7: Uh So, so there's always an opportunity uh for for
- 42:49Speaker 7: guys that suit up and dress for you know, on
- 42:53Speaker 7: every game day.
- 42:54Speaker 6: Uh So you know there's.
- 42:56Speaker 7: An opportunity I think at all times for all of
- 42:58Speaker 7: our guys.
- 42:58Speaker 6: We expect all of our guys be ready to play.
- 43:01Speaker 1: Okay, next Rodney was asked what he's learned about his
- 43:05Speaker 1: team the way they were competitive and had opportunities to
- 43:09Speaker 1: win both games but did not win either game.
- 43:12Speaker 6: Well, I think the thing that we talked about over
- 43:13Speaker 6: the last two games.
- 43:15Speaker 7: You know, one, if you go back to the Tennessee game,
- 43:17Speaker 7: we really value taking.
- 43:19Speaker 6: Care of the basketball really well.
- 43:20Speaker 7: I mean, we had five turnovers in that game against
- 43:23Speaker 7: the number one defensive team in the country. And when
- 43:26Speaker 7: you're going into that game, they would they would do
- 43:28Speaker 7: a great job making it kind of a grind out
- 43:31Speaker 7: game where you had to value taking care of the
- 43:33Speaker 7: basketball and you had to have a physical mindset. Ray
- 43:36Speaker 7: Borders teams have always been good rebounding teams.
- 43:39Speaker 6: When you're going into that game that we were.
- 43:41Speaker 7: Gonna have to try to limit their second chance opportunities,
- 43:43Speaker 7: and in this league for that matter, over the course
- 43:46Speaker 7: of the three games, we've had to really try to
- 43:49Speaker 7: work harder trying to limit other teams second chance opportunities.
- 43:52Speaker 7: You know, just the physicality when that ball goes up
- 43:56Speaker 7: on the glass, that's when the game is on. It's
- 43:58Speaker 7: the game within the game, and I think that that's
- 44:01Speaker 7: where we've kind of had our shortcomings a little bit
- 44:03Speaker 7: and given teams opportunities for second chance, But our guys
- 44:07Speaker 7: have you know, been excited about trying to get better
- 44:10Speaker 7: with it.
- 44:10Speaker 6: I mean we worked. We worked almost every day that we.
- 44:13Speaker 7: Have an opportunity to have a physical practice. We worked
- 44:15Speaker 7: really hard at trying to get better with our blockouts
- 44:18Speaker 7: and finishing possessions with physical blockouts. But that's that's been
- 44:22Speaker 7: the toughest part there. I thought we won the fifty
- 44:24Speaker 7: to fifty game against Tennessee.
- 44:26Speaker 6: We were first to the floor.
- 44:28Speaker 7: We played, you know, Texas competitive basketball in terms of
- 44:32Speaker 7: trying to.
- 44:32Speaker 6: Win that part of the game.
- 44:34Speaker 7: And I think we've improved in that area from day
- 44:37Speaker 7: from from the first game of Conference player.
- 44:39Speaker 6: I thought Texas A and them got every fifty to
- 44:41Speaker 6: fifty ball at third place. And again, it's the game
- 44:44Speaker 6: within the game.
- 44:45Speaker 7: It's the battles within the battle of the game that
- 44:47Speaker 7: really in games like this have really been the the
- 44:51Speaker 7: siding factor in the games.
- 44:53Speaker 1: All Right, we're gonna hear some more from Rodney. We
- 44:55Speaker 1: need a break. When we come back. We'll hear some
- 44:57Speaker 1: more from Rodney Terry talking about this Texas team as
- 45:00Speaker 1: they get ready to leave tomorrow for Norman, Oklahoma, and
- 45:04Speaker 1: they have a nine o'clock tip off nine pm Central
- 45:09Speaker 1: time tip off from the Lloyd Noble Center against Oh You.
- 45:12Speaker 1: We'll hear more from Artie coming up on AM thirteen
- 45:14Speaker 1: under the Zone.
- 45:22Speaker 6: Back to the Craig Ways Show.
- 45:23Speaker 2: Connect with Craig through the text.
- 45:25Speaker 4: Line by text Team Texas to eight one three zero follow.
- 45:29Speaker 4: My data rates may apply.
- 45:34Speaker 3: What the man was saying, with standard messaging and data
- 45:36Speaker 3: rates may apply.
- 45:38Speaker 1: That's what he was saying. If you want to text
- 45:39Speaker 1: the program, always enjoy Have you text the program? So
- 45:45Speaker 1: that's cool, and uh, you know whatever you want to
- 45:50Speaker 1: hit us up with. I did open up say who
- 45:53Speaker 1: would you want to be if you're a Cowboys fan?
- 45:59Speaker 1: If you're not a Cowboys you probably don't need to
- 46:02Speaker 1: weigh in on that kind of thing, because that this
- 46:05Speaker 1: belongs to those long suffering Cowboys fans like Cameron Parker.
- 46:10Speaker 2: Cam. Let me ask you this.
- 46:11Speaker 1: You you mentioned that when when last week, and it
- 46:15Speaker 1: was certainly understandable that Jerry Jones, when he refused to
- 46:22Speaker 1: grant the Bear's permission to interview Mike McCarthy. You said,
- 46:27Speaker 1: and you weren't the only one. Many many including myself, said, well,
- 46:29Speaker 1: that probably means that he's going to keep Mike McCarthy.
- 46:32Speaker 1: And then you know, you have to remember Jerry. Jerry
- 46:36Speaker 1: exists on a totally different plane than us. You know,
- 46:38Speaker 1: he's kind of like to borrow from sign Forel Bizarro Jerry,
- 46:41Speaker 1: you know Bizarrow, Jerry duns. So every thought he was
- 46:45Speaker 1: going to keep Mike McCarthy's not going to keep Mike McCarthy.
- 46:47Speaker 1: Now at the time last week you said that means
- 46:50Speaker 1: I'm out again for all of twenty twenty five. So
- 46:53Speaker 1: so I put it to you, Cameron Parker, Cameron Dallas
- 46:57Speaker 1: Parker does hit on the highre as to whether you're
- 47:01Speaker 1: back in on watching the Cowboys. So you know, if
- 47:11Speaker 1: it's if somebody you're not on board with, then then
- 47:16Speaker 1: you're not going to watch. Like who give me a name,
- 47:21Speaker 1: You give me a name, Who would you?
- 47:22Speaker 2: Who would you? If it's Kellen Moore?
- 47:24Speaker 3: Yeah, I might just check in out of curiosity, But
- 47:28Speaker 3: I'm not going to be like all in reading every
- 47:32Speaker 3: single report in training camp to do that. Oh yeah, okay,
- 47:38Speaker 3: all right, Oh yeah, I mean I even did it
- 47:40Speaker 3: sometime this past summer, and then I kind of realized
- 47:42Speaker 3: during the summer with the futility, this is not gonna
- 47:46Speaker 3: This team is not going to be very good. We're
- 47:48Speaker 3: talking about Ezekiel Elliott in training camp. So if it's
- 47:52Speaker 3: someone like Dion or Belichicks, somehow they pay that ten
- 47:57Speaker 3: million dollars buyout that one out of U n C,
- 48:00Speaker 3: and you know, we'll see how the off season goes.
- 48:01Speaker 3: But okay, Aaron Glenn depends on who his coordinator hires.
- 48:05Speaker 3: Are guys like Aaron Glenn. You know, it all depends
- 48:08Speaker 3: on who they hire as like the offensive coordinator.
- 48:11Speaker 2: Okay, okay, all right, all right, So anyway.
- 48:15Speaker 3: But I don't I don't think Jerry's smart enough to
- 48:17Speaker 3: hire a coordinator like that. If it's Pete Carroll, I
- 48:20Speaker 3: think I would be interested in it. But also Pete
- 48:23Speaker 3: might just be past his prime.
- 48:24Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 48:25Speaker 3: Okay, that's interesting. That'll be interesting to see if that
- 48:29Speaker 3: indeed turns out. Hey, Sark and Austin, Pete and Pete
- 48:33Speaker 3: in Dallas. You know a lot of thinking, yeah, all
- 48:38Speaker 3: of that stuff.
- 48:39Speaker 1: Let's hear a little more from Longhorn's head coach, Rodney
- 48:43Speaker 1: Terry talking to Texas Basketball. Okay, a few minutes ago,
- 48:46Speaker 1: we heard him talk about Kenda Weaver's gonna be out
- 48:48Speaker 1: for a while. It's and I can tell you it's
- 48:50Speaker 1: it's a hip flexor thing, is what they're saying. Or
- 48:54Speaker 1: you know, it's with that muscle there in the hip area.
- 48:56Speaker 2: Well, I have flucture issue, do you really?
- 48:59Speaker 3: Yeah, it's sucks.
- 49:01Speaker 2: I didn't know you had that.
- 49:02Speaker 3: Remember when I was out for him back because of
- 49:05Speaker 3: my head flexer?
- 49:06Speaker 2: Oh wow.
- 49:06Speaker 3: Yeah, there's the reason why Kenner weavers on crutches because yeah,
- 49:10Speaker 3: if you've hurt that thing, right my lord. Yeah, So
- 49:14Speaker 3: he's going to be out for a while. And Sark
- 49:17Speaker 3: was asked if he takes on a bigger leadership role
- 49:21Speaker 3: with regard to the team.
- 49:22Speaker 6: Yeah, Kim is a big He's a big loss to
- 49:24Speaker 6: our team.
- 49:25Speaker 7: You know, he's Uh, he's one of our toughest guys
- 49:27Speaker 7: on the team. He's a guy that hangs his hat
- 49:30Speaker 7: on make him win and plays for us uh throughout
- 49:33Speaker 7: the course of games. Uh and and plays with the
- 49:37Speaker 7: chip on his shoulder, you know, their entire time doing it.
- 49:40Speaker 7: You know, I've asked him to stay engaged with our team.
- 49:45Speaker 7: Uh and see see the game through a coaches and
- 49:48Speaker 7: lins right now and try to help your players as
- 49:50Speaker 7: you as you see the game through a coaches lins
- 49:53Speaker 7: in terms of trying to help guys, seventy seven rebounds
- 49:56Speaker 7: went out the door.
- 49:57Speaker 6: When when uh when when Kendall's not.
- 50:00Speaker 7: Playing for us, That's what he had to this point
- 50:02Speaker 7: right now, and he's always one of those guys you
- 50:05Speaker 7: could count on that could give you some really impactful
- 50:08Speaker 7: and meaningful rebounds and key times you know, who can
- 50:13Speaker 7: emerge and do that for us? Right now, at this time,
- 50:15Speaker 7: I think we have a number of different guys that
- 50:17Speaker 7: are more than capable of doing it. They've they've got
- 50:20Speaker 7: to do it for us. Though, you know, Jason kenn
- 50:21Speaker 7: has a great physical body. We need him to be
- 50:24Speaker 7: a guy that rebounds the basketball for us, and and uh,
- 50:28Speaker 7: you know, kind of takes up that slack a little bit.
- 50:30Speaker 7: We need our we need our big wings, we need
- 50:32Speaker 7: trademond marks rebound down for us. And when he traded,
- 50:36Speaker 7: come down and get some rebounds as well. You know.
- 50:39Speaker 7: You know, so those guys, I think, by committee, we
- 50:42Speaker 7: know that we hold Art and and and Caten to
- 50:45Speaker 7: pretty high levels of of of trying to rebound for us.
- 50:49Speaker 7: A lot of times they're they're dealing with some of
- 50:51Speaker 7: the better rebounders, so they're they're really trying to hold
- 50:54Speaker 7: their blockout, so other guys that have opportunity to come
- 50:56Speaker 7: down and get rebounds.
- 50:57Speaker 6: Our guards have got to come down to help us.
- 50:59Speaker 3: Rebounders will the thoughts from there on all the others
- 51:03Speaker 3: who have to pitch in. He was also asked how
- 51:07Speaker 3: does he make sure that his message, and it's not
- 51:11Speaker 3: just Rodney's message.
- 51:12Speaker 2: If you've been around the team as.
- 51:13Speaker 1: We have, you know that the entire coaching staff plays
- 51:16Speaker 1: a plays a part in this, plays a role in this.
- 51:19Speaker 1: Steve McClain and Byron Jones and Brandon Chappelle and obviously
- 51:23Speaker 1: Frank haith uh with with Darby rich the strength coach,
- 51:29Speaker 1: They're all kind of pitching in in terms of the
- 51:31Speaker 1: support of what they have for the players and instruction
- 51:34Speaker 1: and inspiring them and all that sort of thing. But
- 51:37Speaker 1: Roddy was asked, how does he make sure that the
- 51:39Speaker 1: message does not get lost to the players and that
- 51:42Speaker 1: the guys stay on board despite the early stumbles and
- 51:45Speaker 1: conference play.
- 51:46Speaker 6: Bob the the you know, our whole approach.
- 51:51Speaker 7: Is always about trying to encourage I as to be
- 51:53Speaker 7: everyday guys, you know, And I think that starts with
- 51:56Speaker 7: the topic thoughts with about thelf. They see me coming
- 51:59Speaker 7: in and I'm down and I'm moping and I'm not
- 52:02Speaker 7: feeling great about what we're doing, then they're probably gonna
- 52:04Speaker 7: be the same way, you know. But I like to
- 52:06Speaker 7: pride myself and being the same guy whether I'm winning,
- 52:10Speaker 7: whether I'm losing. Okay, you're having a good day, you're
- 52:12Speaker 7: having a bad day, I'm the same guy every day.
- 52:15Speaker 7: So I don't ever get too high. I'll never get
- 52:17Speaker 7: too low. And I strongly encourage him to be that
- 52:20Speaker 7: same way. And I'm a man of a lot of
- 52:23Speaker 7: strong faith. I know God's never brought me this far.
- 52:26Speaker 6: It or not.
- 52:26Speaker 7: Did I be with me through good times in bad times.
- 52:29Speaker 7: So you know, there's nothing you can't overcome. There's no
- 52:31Speaker 7: obstacles in life that you can't overcome that's put in
- 52:34Speaker 7: front of you if you have strong faith. And I
- 52:36Speaker 7: encourage our guys to have strong faith and.
- 52:40Speaker 6: Live by that every day. Not just why you're here.
- 52:43Speaker 7: Playing basketball at University of Texas. You're gonna have to
- 52:46Speaker 7: do it in life. There's gonna be a lot of
- 52:48Speaker 7: adversity coming your way in life.
- 52:50Speaker 6: But if you have strong faith and.
- 52:51Speaker 7: You're a believer, nothing you can't overcome and you can't
- 52:54Speaker 7: push through with.
- 52:56Speaker 3: He was also asked that how much does that faith
- 52:59Speaker 3: get tested and how challenging it is right now with
- 53:02Speaker 3: so many injuries popping up and down from before the
- 53:05Speaker 3: season to early in the season to right now.
- 53:07Speaker 7: Yeah, it's not easy, you know, but that's that's team sports,
- 53:10Speaker 7: and that's what that's why you have a team.
- 53:12Speaker 6: You know, they're gonna be guys go down and.
- 53:15Speaker 7: Next man mentality where the next guy has to try
- 53:18Speaker 7: to step up and be rented and ready to play.
- 53:20Speaker 7: And you know, all you want in life is an
- 53:23Speaker 7: opportunity and a lot of our young guys and even
- 53:25Speaker 7: guys that are that are playing, all you want is
- 53:28Speaker 7: an opportunity. So but I think you have to be
- 53:29Speaker 7: prepared for that opportunity when it presents itself as well,
- 53:32Speaker 7: so you seize the moment. But hasn't been easy, and
- 53:36Speaker 7: I know, you know a lot of people deal with
- 53:38Speaker 7: in team sports. You have to deal with injuries. It's
- 53:40Speaker 7: all part of the game. It's all part of the sport.
- 53:43Speaker 3: Uh.
- 53:43Speaker 7: I think it's how you continue to push forward and
- 53:46Speaker 7: stay the course and continue to try to keep your
- 53:50Speaker 7: team moving forward, you know, Uh, with the guys that
- 53:53Speaker 7: you do have available to play at a high level.
- 53:56Speaker 1: All right, we'll hear some more from Rodney Terry coming
- 53:58Speaker 1: up next hour as well, but we we have some
- 54:02Speaker 1: more pro football notes to get to next when we
- 54:04Speaker 1: continue on AM thirteen under the Zone thirteen under his
- 54:08Speaker 1: own camera. That I was just talking during the break
- 54:09Speaker 1: because a cute little puppy dog in the uh in
- 54:15Speaker 1: the station today. I believe it belongs to Gizelle, our
- 54:20Speaker 1: programming goddess, So I mean our promotions got us. So
- 54:25Speaker 1: she had a little pub cute little puppy in there.
- 54:27Speaker 1: You said, it brought back memories and when we were
- 54:29Speaker 1: Acrosstown and it was like a dog friendly.
- 54:33Speaker 3: Zonees good doggy daycare it was. There were all kinds
- 54:36Speaker 3: of dogs.
- 54:37Speaker 1: There and then one of them took a dump in
- 54:39Speaker 1: the in the air study and that nobody even knows.
- 54:42Speaker 2: It was on the corner.
- 54:43Speaker 1: Bucket got Bolt was over there and he's like, did
- 54:44Speaker 1: an entire morning show with with a pile of dog poop, right,
- 54:49Speaker 1: that had happened over the weekend, and he didn't notice
- 54:53Speaker 1: in the left. Later Chad Hastings came in to do his.
- 54:55Speaker 3: Show and noticed it afterwards, So Anyway, we hope you got.
- 55:05Speaker 2: Through the weekend.
- 55:05Speaker 1: Okay, As we mentioned, there's one other NFL game tonight,
- 55:12Speaker 1: Rams Vikings. There are those of us who are Rams
- 55:17Speaker 1: fans have a little PTSD even it comes to the Vikings.
- 55:19Speaker 1: They've met seven times in the playoffs, and the Vikings
- 55:22Speaker 1: have won five of the seven games. In fact, the
- 55:24Speaker 1: Rams have won I think their two wins are two
- 55:27Speaker 1: of the last three, but maybe even I don't think
- 55:33Speaker 1: about it, just back to back. They won the year
- 55:35Speaker 1: they went to the Super Bowl in one I think, uh,
- 55:40Speaker 1: and then it was and then they won a few
- 55:43Speaker 1: years after that or something. Anyway that when I was
- 55:46Speaker 1: a kid growing up, they were just continually frustrated by
- 55:49Speaker 1: those really good Viking teams that just could not get
- 55:50Speaker 1: over the hump at the Super Bowl. Our question on
- 55:54Speaker 1: the text line was with the announcement today that Mike
- 55:58Speaker 1: McCarthy's contract will not be renewed, and you could say
- 56:01Speaker 1: fired if you want to. That's that's okay. It's just
- 56:04Speaker 1: his contract expired. They're not renewing it. So call it
- 56:07Speaker 1: what you want, you know, whether firing or just not renewal,
- 56:10Speaker 1: non renewal, whatever the deal is. And Jerry Jones talked
- 56:13Speaker 1: about it and said it was weird. The one thing
- 56:18Speaker 1: that he said, Jerry's always good for saying something that
- 56:22Speaker 1: just hits different with you.
- 56:27Speaker 2: Here's the quote.
- 56:29Speaker 1: He says, over the past week, Mike and I had
- 56:30Speaker 1: the opportunity to conduct a joint review of all aspects
- 56:33Speaker 1: of the past season, our players and staff, and also
- 56:35Speaker 1: spent considerable time discussing the road forward for the team.
- 56:39Speaker 1: These discussions were thorough and received an appropriate amount of
- 56:42Speaker 1: time and depth to cover. That's all well and good.
- 56:46Speaker 1: And then and then, and then.
- 56:48Speaker 3: He said this, prior to reaching the point of contract negotiations,
- 56:54Speaker 3: though it became mutually clear that it would be better
- 56:57Speaker 3: for each of us to add in a different direction.
- 57:01Speaker 3: I'm not I'm not quite understanding it said they had
- 57:03Speaker 3: these real, thorough discussions, received an appropriate amount of time
- 57:07Speaker 3: and depth to cover, but prior to reaching the point
- 57:10Speaker 3: of contract negotiations, it became.
- 57:12Speaker 2: Clear this isn't gonna work out. So I'm trying to
- 57:15Speaker 2: figure out.
- 57:15Speaker 1: Where where it shaded into that, where it went from
- 57:20Speaker 1: having these in depth discussions. I think we need to
- 57:23Speaker 1: do this, we need to do that. Yeah, I don't
- 57:26Speaker 1: even think we need to talk about contract.
- 57:28Speaker 3: I mean, where where was the gray area? Where did it?
- 57:32Speaker 3: Where did it become a parent?
- 57:34Speaker 1: He has been saying for days, as we know, going
- 57:36Speaker 1: on back to the end of the regular season, that
- 57:39Speaker 1: the hay was in the barn based on what he
- 57:42Speaker 1: was going to do and evaluating everything.
- 57:43Speaker 3: So if the hay was in the barn, then why
- 57:46Speaker 3: wasn't Mike McCarthy let go right right after the Monday
- 57:49Speaker 3: morning after the Cowboys lost to whoever? Yeah? Yeah, it's
- 57:55Speaker 3: so backwards it doesn't even make any sense to me.
- 57:57Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't.
- 57:58Speaker 3: I don't know how to explain it, and I don't
- 58:00Speaker 3: know if Jerry Jones knows how to explain it. And
- 58:03Speaker 3: I'm sure he'll Does he have a radio hit tomorrow
- 58:06Speaker 3: on one O five three or over the ask them
- 58:09Speaker 3: about it, and I guarantee you'll give a four minute
- 58:11Speaker 3: answer that'll have like four different jerryisms in it. Maybe
- 58:16Speaker 3: the moon will be mentioned into it, who knows. And
- 58:19Speaker 3: it won't make any sense. It's just it's just Jerry's reasoning.
- 58:23Speaker 3: That's the way he thinks. And I don't know, correct.
- 58:27Speaker 3: I wish I had a better answer for you, But
- 58:29Speaker 3: I don't think there's any logic into what he's thinking,
- 58:30Speaker 3: because I don't understand why you just wouldn't move on
- 58:32Speaker 3: from him on Monday. And I don't know if, like
- 58:35Speaker 3: I guarantee you, he makes the move today, most teams
- 58:39Speaker 3: owners probably have a short list of coaches who they're
- 58:42Speaker 3: looking at before the even fire they're head coach.
- 58:46Speaker 2: Right during the season.
- 58:47Speaker 3: I guarantee you some of these owners have an idea, Okay,
- 58:50Speaker 3: these are the five coaches I'm looking at if we
- 58:51Speaker 3: do move on. Jerry's probably just doing that list right now.
- 58:55Speaker 3: He's like, all right, you know, is he still around now?
- 59:00Speaker 2: Uh?
- 59:01Speaker 1: Reportedly the Bears and Saints are interested in McCarthy. Of course,
- 59:07Speaker 1: the Bears had that request for permission to speak with
- 59:10Speaker 1: him denied. They don't have to ask permission anymore.
- 59:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 59:16Speaker 1: So there on the text line, I offered up the question,
- 59:22Speaker 1: I said, you know, who, who would you prefer to
- 59:29Speaker 1: be the Cowboys head coach? And uh, one guy said,
- 59:34Speaker 1: you have to think about this now, any coach named Sean.
- 59:42Speaker 3: So think about the Shawns that are out there. Peyton, McDermott, McVeigh, mcvayh.
- 59:49Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 59:52Speaker 3: So there, so that's three Shawn's. I don't know if
- 59:55Speaker 3: there's any other se.
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: Uh yeah, so and if you say any coach with
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: him c in his name, well, that would include McCarthy
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: because you have McVeigh and you have.
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: Bills. Aren't firing McDermott. No, Rams are not moving away
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: from McVeigh. No, No, they're saying go after him, try
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: to get him. But you can't.
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: You can't do that, you know, it'd be tampering. You'd
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: have to be after the seasons over and wouldn't do that.
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: And Sean McVay would never go to Dallas, he would
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: never be the There's a better chance Lincoln Riley would
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: be the head coach and Sean McVay.
- 1:00:35Speaker 3: Yeah, there's a better chance McVay would just retire.
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: Yeah, he's talked about it a couple of times and
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: then he gets energized again by his group. The guy's
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: thirty nine or forty whatever. You know, who's our guy
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: in Miami McDaniels. Yeah, see anybody with him ceing their name, Well,
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: that would include McCarthy. Unfor you, McDaniels, who's in Green
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: Bay on the floor the floor for now, that's all
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: that younger, that younger thing mm hm. You know it's
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: been really quiet, really quiet in San Francisco. There's been obviously,
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: you know, I know they've been very very disappointed without
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: and they had a ton of injuries this year too,
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: but uh, how you know, it's it's been feast or
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: famine with.
- 1:01:29Speaker 2: Uh, with Kyle Shanahan.
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: It's either make the Super Bowl or completely missed the playoffs.
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: So it's been it's been weird in that respect.
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: He's had them in the Super Bowl what three times,
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: twice against the Chiefs, and maybe that's it.
- 1:01:47Speaker 3: Just twice, Yeah, once with Jimmy g and then once
- 1:01:50Speaker 3: with Brock perty Right.
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: Jimmy G, by the way, did not look like a
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: super Bowl quarterback when he quarterback the Rams in that
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: season finale against the See's.
- 1:02:00Speaker 3: You know, he's not gonna be the next Sam Donald.
- 1:02:03Speaker 3: I don't see the next reclamation project. I don't see that.
- 1:02:06Speaker 3: I didn't see Sam Darnald doing what he's done. Though
- 1:02:09Speaker 3: it's been it's been quite uh quite a thing to
- 1:02:14Speaker 3: view to see him doing it. Somebody else said at
- 1:02:17Speaker 3: this point, Jerry Jones should just make himself head coach. Yeah,
- 1:02:23Speaker 3: he can kind of be the puppeteer without having to
- 1:02:25Speaker 3: be the head coach, though, that's he could argue was
- 1:02:27Speaker 3: the head coach. When Jason Garrett, yep, was the head coach,
- 1:02:30Speaker 3: he would be the funniest, the funniest higher Do you
- 1:02:33Speaker 3: think it would be Jason Garrett? If Jerry Jones announced
- 1:02:36Speaker 3: right now Jason Garrett's bring will that be the funniest outcome? Yeah?
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: I don't. Why would Jason Garrett ever want to come
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: back and work for him again? Money?
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: Yeah, although I imagine he's pretty well compensated.
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: NBC.
- 1:02:53Speaker 3: Yep, he says like five words on the broadcast because
- 1:02:55Speaker 3: they have a seven man halftime show. I am you
- 1:02:59Speaker 3: know that.
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: Linda asked me the other day when I was talking
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: about that question that somebody asked me about if I
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: thought that the that quin Ewers was the most underappreciated
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: long one quarterback, And I said, at least going back
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: to Chris Simms.
- 1:03:18Speaker 3: And then to ask me last time, she goes, what's
- 1:03:21Speaker 3: Chris Sims doing today? And I pointed to the television cities.
- 1:03:25Speaker 3: He's on Sunday Night football doing good. He does, he does,
- 1:03:28Speaker 3: He does a really good job.
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: And I will say this, he liked Quen Yours was
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: always really nice, really.
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: Easy to deal with. Was friendly. Was was never never
- 1:03:42Speaker 2: an issue.
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: And I you know, a typically cap obviously to the
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: media relations staff at Texas.
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: John Bianco does a great job in Thomas Stepp.
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: You know, they do a grace to fullaw do a
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: great job with football, and of course Scott McConnell with basketball.
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: You know, the splendid job with what they do with
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: the student athletes, not just in putting out cranking out
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: game notes and stuff like that, but working with those
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: guys so that they can give more than just you know,
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: the easy answer. They can be a little more thought
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: provoking in the things they have to say. And and
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: they've done a good job with that. And Chris was
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: one of those guys. He was he was glib, he
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: was he was fun to visit with.
- 1:04:22Speaker 3: Cole was a guy that it took some cultivation for
- 1:04:25Speaker 3: a while his first year starting quarterback.
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: Cole will be the first today.
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: It was kind of rough Monday press conferences because then
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: the players are coming afterwards, like to do now, and
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: it's it was a little difficult. It was very very short,
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: three and four word generic answers.
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: It just wouldn't wouldn't good.
- 1:04:44Speaker 3: Now. He's a big ten analyst about that this guy's
- 1:04:47Speaker 3: on YouTube podcast.
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: Yeah, he's He's got a long, long way and I'm
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: very happy for him.
- 1:04:53Speaker 3: I think I think we'll look back Craig on Quinn's legacy.
- 1:04:56Speaker 3: It'll get it'll get better. I mean, he's third in
- 1:05:00Speaker 3: at all time passing yards, in passing touchdowns. At UT
- 1:05:04Speaker 3: he won a conference championship, the same number of conference
- 1:05:07Speaker 3: championships won by Colton Vince Young, two playoff berths, two
- 1:05:12Speaker 3: playoff wins, got into the semi finals, and you know,
- 1:05:16Speaker 3: I think you could argue he brought Texas back from
- 1:05:18Speaker 3: the dead, you know, a five win program, and in
- 1:05:22Speaker 3: a short amount of time took him back to the
- 1:05:24Speaker 3: playoff and back to back years.
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: And here's how I feel about this, and I know
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: you agree about this part. He didn't do it all himself.
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: And he also when they had misfortune, didn't do all
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: of that himself. That's part of that quarterbacks getting you know,
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: too much credit for the wins and too much grief
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: for the losses. But he had a lot to do
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: with the elevation of the program, a lot to do
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: with the elevation. Now in one of the things working
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: against him was one of the things working against Chris Sims.
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: There was another quarterback, although in a slightly different thing
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: because Sims came in after Major apple White was the
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: established starter. And then Major tour the the a c
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: L in the Y two K Cotton Bowl against Arkansas,
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: and then that's when you know, uh, you know a
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: lot of the the uh. And that was coming off
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: of being the Big twelve offensive player of the year
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: and uh, but that's when Sims started playing more. And
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: then fans were choosing sides. And if you visit with
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: our friend Rod Babers, who's stepping in tomorrow, isn't he
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: Rod's coming into stepping travel So uh, Rod b will
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: be in here tomorrow about and Rod is very close
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: to Chris Sims.
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: By the way.
- 1:06:41Speaker 3: That Brotherhood of the Wood or whatever they call them,
- 1:06:44Speaker 3: the their their their agreement that.
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: Those two guys and Bo Scafe and uh, there were
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: you know, anyway they'll he'll.
- 1:06:51Speaker 2: Talk about that.
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: And and and Kyle Shanahan, by the way, is one
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: of those guys, one of that five, that group of
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: five of those guys. But anyway, you know, there was
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: already that competition thing built in here. There was no competition.
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: Quinn Ewers was the established starter. He was the starting
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: quarterback of this football team. But there was so much
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: anticipation about Arch and his eventual time coming that it
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: shaped a lot of folks opinions about Quinn good or
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: bad based on the fact that Arch is waiting in
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: the wings.
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: You don't worry about that anymore now, those who were.
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: All about wanting Arch to take the preponderance of the snaps,
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: you're gonna get your wish coming up. And I think
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: he could be great for Texas. But by the same token,
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: I think it would be unfair not to credit Quinn
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: Ewers with everything he did with this offense and with
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: this program while he was here. All Right, we're gonna
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: hear more from Rodney Terry coming up when we continue
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: on AM thirteen under the Zone. We continue on Monday
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: here on a thirteen hunderd the Zone. And somebody asked
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: me about could you repeat what you said about the
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: night before last and talk about the Tennessee game. Well,
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: we've heard Rodney Terry pretty much address a lot of that,
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: and we're going to do some more of that here.
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: And this was from the media zoom from this morning
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: where he recapped the Tennessee and Auburn game and a
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: look ahead to Oklahoma. So the next question for him
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: was you hear our team talk about we got to
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: play our a game against really good teams, have to
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: do that, and they've shown flashes of it. So USh
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: for him was how close is this team to playing
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: what he classifies as an a game?
- 1:09:07Speaker 7: Man?
- 1:09:07Speaker 6: You know what I think?
- 1:09:10Speaker 7: You know, you get better sometimes and losses, you know,
- 1:09:14Speaker 7: and you don't have the results to show for it.
- 1:09:16Speaker 7: You know, we play a really good I mean, we
- 1:09:19Speaker 7: play a really good Auburn team, a team I think
- 1:09:21Speaker 7: that have the chance to, you know, be a Final
- 1:09:23Speaker 7: four type team, a team that could win the whole thing.
- 1:09:25Speaker 7: And they're good enough to win the whole thing. You know,
- 1:09:28Speaker 7: do you come back and you play the team that's
- 1:09:30Speaker 7: been ranked number one and underfe a big part of
- 1:09:32Speaker 7: the season, who prized themselves in being a physical team
- 1:09:36Speaker 7: that plays really good defense and rebound, and you know,
- 1:09:40Speaker 7: give or take the game within the game and the
- 1:09:42Speaker 7: battles within the battles of the game, the games in
- 1:09:46Speaker 7: the battles, and it's the winnable.
- 1:09:48Speaker 6: Games for you.
- 1:09:48Speaker 7: So you know, you know, you use those addedge sometimes
- 1:09:52Speaker 7: getting close you can't keep saying you're close. You just
- 1:09:54Speaker 7: got to keep working the process, you know. And I
- 1:09:56Speaker 7: think I think our guys again had great attitude. Have
- 1:10:01Speaker 7: we been disappointed we're coming up short against really good teams,
- 1:10:06Speaker 7: we have, but they've come back and like today, they
- 1:10:09Speaker 7: came back with really good energy and had a really
- 1:10:11Speaker 7: physical practice today and really competed with each other and
- 1:10:16Speaker 7: hold each other accountable at a very high level.
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: It does also kind of remind me of something Vick
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: Schaefer said, I think in the press conference after the
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: loss of South Carolina yesterday about against a team like that,
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: you have to play really really well and throw the
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: first punch in South Carolina through the first punch, and
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: he said, and the second and the third, you know,
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: that sort of thing. But against a really really good
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: team that you're measuring yourself against. And both the men's
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: and women's basketball teams have played the number two team
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: in the country in the same week or within one
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: week's time, and both came up short. Ben lost by
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: five dollar and the women were beating soundly by really
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: good South Carolina team, which even though UCLA is still
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: the number one team in the country, and they had
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: their game postponed against Northwestern because the fires in southern California.
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: I've watched UCLA play this year. I don't think they're
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: as good as South Carolina. And I also trust the
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: words of a long time basketball person in the basketball
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: world who was an outstanding player in high school, in
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: college and won a state championship as a high school coach,
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: and it was a great assistant coach for many many
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: years at the collegiate level. And that's my broadcast partner,
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: Kathy Harston, and Kathy said in the first five minutes
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: of the game at the first media timeout, she said,
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: it didn't take me long to see this is by
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: far the best team we've seen this year. And they
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: played some pretty decent teams, including Notre Dame on the road,
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: but she said by far, and you could tell it
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: at the depth of the roster. Their leading scores are
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: not their starters. By the way, they have a whole
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: bunch of players at average eight, nine, ten, eleven.
- 1:12:07Speaker 2: They have a bunch of players who do that.
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: So the point is get you really have to be
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: playing your a game and at the top of your
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: game in order to have a shot to beat a
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: team like that, and That's what Rodney Terry was starting
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: to Dave. He's also asked if he's had to alter
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: his practice routine and how hard they work physically because
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: of all the injuries.
- 1:12:28Speaker 7: Yeah, no, Josh, you definitely had to, right, you run
- 1:12:30Speaker 7: across your mind because you need you guys in games.
- 1:12:32Speaker 6: I mean, obviously, we know we we get better.
- 1:12:34Speaker 7: In practice, and I think our practice habits are our
- 1:12:36Speaker 7: game habits, you know. Uh, And we try to go
- 1:12:39Speaker 7: hard every day in practice so we can go hard
- 1:12:41Speaker 7: in games. I think there's certain things at certain times
- 1:12:45Speaker 7: that that you know, like today, I want to do
- 1:12:48Speaker 7: a lose ball drill, you know, and you know Jason Kent,
- 1:12:51Speaker 7: you know, has a major risk you know situation.
- 1:12:55Speaker 6: No, probably not gonna be able to do that lose
- 1:12:57Speaker 6: ball drill.
- 1:12:57Speaker 7: I kind of wanted to do it, but I felt
- 1:12:59Speaker 7: like we did a pretty good job of the battle
- 1:13:01Speaker 7: and within the ballot being first to the floor the
- 1:13:03Speaker 7: other day against the physical team, So I chose not
- 1:13:06Speaker 7: to do that.
- 1:13:06Speaker 6: We put the bubble up to day though.
- 1:13:08Speaker 7: We got to continue to try to fix what we
- 1:13:10Speaker 7: have to fix in terms of our rebounding and having
- 1:13:13Speaker 7: a physical mindset to make sure we hit first and
- 1:13:17Speaker 7: try to hold our blockouts and have guys come.
- 1:13:19Speaker 6: Down and rebound.
- 1:13:20Speaker 7: So you know, you got to kind of pick and
- 1:13:21Speaker 7: choose where you think you could try to continue to
- 1:13:24Speaker 7: get better and things we need to fix.
- 1:13:25Speaker 6: And that's an area that we know we need to
- 1:13:27Speaker 6: fix and something.
- 1:13:29Speaker 7: We feel like collectively as a team and as a staff,
- 1:13:32Speaker 7: we continue to work at it, we can continue to
- 1:13:34Speaker 7: get better with it. We've gotten better. We've just played
- 1:13:37Speaker 7: some really good teams that done a great job, you know,
- 1:13:40Speaker 7: going to that glass. Just like I mean, we'll play
- 1:13:43Speaker 7: another really good team in Oklahoma. This is probably Porter's
- 1:13:46Speaker 7: best team at Oklahoma, you know, and they do a great.
- 1:13:49Speaker 6: Job attacking the glass as well. This whole league attacks
- 1:13:52Speaker 6: the glass.
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: Yeah, that goes without saying it certainly does. So you know,
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: this is another question, and correct me if I'm wrong,
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: But I think I remember this camp that during the
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: all the fault camp workouts, people kept asking the l
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: question leadership, leadership, who's the team leader, who are the leaders,
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: blah blah blah. And that's been happening a lot with
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: the basketball team lately, asking who has been stepping up
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: as the leader, if there's one specific person in the
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: locker room.
- 1:14:25Speaker 6: Yeah, you know, I think we have a collection of
- 1:14:27Speaker 6: older guys.
- 1:14:28Speaker 7: You know, some guys again that a new drive situation,
- 1:14:31Speaker 7: new to each other, but they've got a chance for
- 1:14:34Speaker 7: a short amount of time, they spend a lot of
- 1:14:35Speaker 7: time with each other, you know.
- 1:14:38Speaker 6: I think again I've said it from.
- 1:14:39Speaker 7: All the Loan Holt season alone, I think this group
- 1:14:41Speaker 7: really likes each other. I think they really try to
- 1:14:44Speaker 7: compete to try to make each other better, and I
- 1:14:47Speaker 7: think they're getting better at holding each other accountable, especially
- 1:14:49Speaker 7: in moments throughout the court of the game. In terms
- 1:14:52Speaker 7: of trying to stay connected in that suplinter, I think
- 1:14:57Speaker 7: Cayden Cedric has tried really hard over the course of
- 1:15:00Speaker 7: the uh, the entire season of trying to do that.
- 1:15:04Speaker 6: You know, he's, uh, he's.
- 1:15:05Speaker 7: Quietly played uh, some pretty good physical basketball, you know,
- 1:15:11Speaker 7: over the course of uh this season. He's getting guys
- 1:15:14Speaker 7: that he's having to deal with, especially over the last
- 1:15:16Speaker 7: three games that are that are real games. I mean,
- 1:15:19Speaker 7: when he when he comes out of the game, well
- 1:15:20Speaker 7: he's finished playing a game, He's he's pretty beat up
- 1:15:23Speaker 7: the next day. In terms of the physicality. It's a
- 1:15:25Speaker 7: physical game. But I think he's really tried to do
- 1:15:28Speaker 7: it by example and and as well as trying to
- 1:15:32Speaker 7: be a vocal guy, I've challenged some other older players
- 1:15:35Speaker 7: to do that and understand the urgency that you have
- 1:15:37Speaker 7: to play with this time of year, knowing that you know,
- 1:15:40Speaker 7: this is really your last year of collegiate basketball, and uh,
- 1:15:44Speaker 7: you know, the memories you're making and the opportunities you have,
- 1:15:47Speaker 7: you only get this one time here. You got to
- 1:15:49Speaker 7: try to to always tell our guys try to have
- 1:15:52Speaker 7: no regrets, you know, but I would I would say, uh,
- 1:15:55Speaker 7: between Kayt and Cedric, I've challenged ought to be to
- 1:15:58Speaker 7: be a guy that does one that regards I think
- 1:16:02Speaker 7: from day one, I've challenged Junior Larry to trying to
- 1:16:04Speaker 7: be that be one of those kind of guys as well.
- 1:16:07Speaker 7: They're again older players, Jason Kint, you know, to name
- 1:16:11Speaker 7: a few in terms of older players, you know, I
- 1:16:14Speaker 7: think I think Jordan Pope's done a pretty good job
- 1:16:17Speaker 7: of it as well. He's not as vocal as I
- 1:16:20Speaker 7: would like for him to be, but I think his
- 1:16:22Speaker 7: play and how hard he's trying to he's playing harder
- 1:16:26Speaker 7: than he's ever played in his life defensively, so you know,
- 1:16:31Speaker 7: he's making a lot of strides in that area as well.
- 1:16:33Speaker 2: All right, there's some from Rtie. I have a little
- 1:16:37Speaker 2: more from Rodney Terry coming up.
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: I got about getting ready for this matchup with Oklahoma'
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: got some other topics we'll get to as well when
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: we continue on AM thirteen.
- 1:16:43Speaker 4: Under the Zone, it's the craig Way Show with the
- 1:16:52Speaker 4: Voice of the Texas Longhorns and Hall of Fame broadcast
- 1:16:55Speaker 4: there Craig Way, whether.
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: It's supposed to warm up, we get to the week progressing,
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: and then maybe some rain h that the there was
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: another I brought this up last hour, this thing about
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: all of the the arrangements that had been made to
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: move that playoff game.
- 1:17:27Speaker 2: From so far to Arizona, and the other side of that,
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: you know, Sean.
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: McVay had his getting his team ready to go and
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: all this other kind of stuff. The this change in
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: venue is almost unprecedented. And and that's funny, it says
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: according to ESPN Research, which is just looking it up
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: really at Pro Football Reference dot com or something like that,
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: I knew this only because of my weird mind. The
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: way it works, this will be the second time the
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: second playoff game in NFL history that is not played
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: at a team's home stadium, excluding Super Bowls.
- 1:18:23Speaker 2: The one other time.
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: That I knew about this, or one other time this
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: has happened was the nineteen thirty six NFL Championship game
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: between the Green Bay Packers and the Boston Redskins.
- 1:18:40Speaker 2: Now, this was before they moved to Washington.
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: And there's a history lesson for you, by the way,
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: if you're wondering about how did Washington ever come to
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: use that term Redskins, it was originally the NFL franchise
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: was in Boston. They took the name Redskins after the
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: historic event the Boston Tea Party in December of seventeen
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: seventy three, when they had a lot of Patriots disguised
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: as Native Americans, and we know the history story about
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: them breaking open the chests of English tea to protest
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: the taxation on the tee and dumping it into the
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: Boston Harbor. They called it the Boston Tea Party. Well
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: that's the reason why they were called the Boston Redskins.
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: And then the franchise would move after nineteen thirty six
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: to Washington in nineteen thirty seven, and they won the
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: NFL title in their first year in DC. But in
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: thirty six they were still the Boston Redskins, and they
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: were supposed to play at Fenway Park, and the ticket
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: sales were so bad that George Preston Marshall, the owner
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: of the team, said, we're not going to do this here.
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: You guys don't want to see the game here. Fine,
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: we'll move it to the Polo Grounds in New York.
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: So they moved to game to New York, and then
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: a few days after the game, the franchise was moved
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: to Washington. So it made me think about that because sometimes,
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: you know, I was joking about this with Linda the
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: other day. I was trying to remember something and it
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: popped out of my mind, and I said, this is ridiculous.
- 1:20:19Speaker 3: I can tell you that in nineteen forty three, the
- 1:20:22Speaker 3: New York Yankees beat the Saint Louis Cardinals four games
- 1:20:24Speaker 3: to win and win the World Series, but I can't
- 1:20:27Speaker 3: remember blah blah blah. I said, For example, I knew
- 1:20:31Speaker 3: that in nineteen thirty six they played that game of
- 1:20:32Speaker 3: the Polo Grants. I know that in nineteen thirty three
- 1:20:35Speaker 3: it was the first time they used divisions East and
- 1:20:37Speaker 3: West and the Bears played the Giants in the NFL
- 1:20:40Speaker 3: Championship and the Bears won the first one. That was
- 1:20:42Speaker 3: the first championship game that was played prior to that
- 1:20:45Speaker 3: was just who ever had the best record at the
- 1:20:47Speaker 3: end of the season. And there's weird how your mind works,
- 1:20:51Speaker 3: how you'll remember some things, but trying to remember what
- 1:20:55Speaker 3: I had for dinner last night, or you know, where's
- 1:20:58Speaker 3: the last play, the last the last time I gashed
- 1:21:00Speaker 3: up the car, those things don't resonate with you.
- 1:21:05Speaker 2: So anyway, uh.
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: They also because the fires, they said they can use
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: they would be able to use so Fi Stadium as
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: a as a shelter if they had to by moving
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: the football game. And so there's still going to see
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: you on how that ultimately goes. Somebody again to the
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: text who asked about not being able to hear us
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: on the radio, I'll repeat it to you because already
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: said this. This was because of there were satellite interference issues.
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: That's what we were told. That's why it wasn't It
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: wasn't anything to do with our radio station, because apparently
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: it happened in Houston and Dallas as well. So I
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: hope that answers your question because I know You've asked
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: it a couple of times, so I just want you
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: to know that was that was the reasoning behind it,
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: all right. A couple of other things from Rodney Terry.
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: He was asked about what he thought was the biggest
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: difference in what he has seen so far. We play
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: in the Southeastern Conference versus play in the Big Twelve.
- 1:22:08Speaker 6: Oh, this is a super duper physical league.
- 1:22:10Speaker 7: You know. In the Big Twelve, you know, you probably
- 1:22:13Speaker 7: have a Houston that you could throw in there, maybe
- 1:22:15Speaker 7: in our state, and you can throw into that match
- 1:22:18Speaker 7: to kind of physicality that we've had over the last
- 1:22:20Speaker 7: three games.
- 1:22:22Speaker 6: I mean, we've had some slug fests. Three teams we played.
- 1:22:25Speaker 7: I mean, they they gonna they throwing some helpmakers at
- 1:22:28Speaker 7: you in terms of the bodies that they can throw
- 1:22:30Speaker 7: at you. You know, the thing about this league, you know,
- 1:22:33Speaker 7: you got older bodies that are that are crashing in
- 1:22:35Speaker 7: the bodies on a regular basis, and you've got to
- 1:22:38Speaker 7: be the wish stand that that Maine, you gotta be
- 1:22:39Speaker 7: the main You got to match that physicality, you know.
- 1:22:43Speaker 7: And for us first three games, it's been physical teams,
- 1:22:47Speaker 7: you know, and I think the game we played Oklahoma,
- 1:22:50Speaker 7: you got another. You got the best offensive rebound in
- 1:22:52Speaker 7: the league and got one. So you talk about another
- 1:22:55Speaker 7: physical player that has a great body. He's been in school,
- 1:22:58Speaker 7: I don't know, four or five years. That's the thing
- 1:23:00Speaker 7: about he's got He's a grown men right now. So
- 1:23:03Speaker 7: these are not young boys we compete against right now.
- 1:23:06Speaker 6: But this league is a physical league. They let us
- 1:23:08Speaker 6: play on both ends of the floor.
- 1:23:11Speaker 7: And you know, you have to just have that, and
- 1:23:13Speaker 7: you got to have that mindset, you know, And I
- 1:23:15Speaker 7: think you know, as we continue to navigate through this league,
- 1:23:18Speaker 7: you have to try to recruit to that. You know,
- 1:23:20Speaker 7: there's a lot of teams that recruited to that. Now,
- 1:23:22Speaker 7: understand what this league is about in that regards, you
- 1:23:24Speaker 7: better have some you better have some grown men.
- 1:23:29Speaker 2: For sure.
- 1:23:30Speaker 3: Uh.
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: You know that the guy he was talking about, Sam Godwin,
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: the post player for Oklahoma. Uh, it's pretty interesting to
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: hear him bring him up and said, I don't know
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: how long he's been here, four or five years or
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: whatever he was talking about. He said, I don't I
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: don't know how long he's he's been here four or
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: five years. Uh, talking about it. I can remember when
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: Godwin was playing for see this is what I was
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: talking about. You remember one thing that trying to remember.
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: Wafford was who I was trying to think of. He
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: was the center for Wafford when they played in the
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: Southern Conference championship game against East Tennessee State. This was
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: twenty twenty. This was five years ago.
- 1:24:23Speaker 3: Man.
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: The reason why I know this is that I broadcast
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: that game for Westwood One. Southern Conference basketball championship game
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: was in Asheville. I did it for Westwood One, and
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: East Tennessee State won, and that got their coach the
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: wake Forest Steve Forbes, the head coach now at wake Forest.
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: I got him the waite Forest job, and I flew
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: the next day to Kansas City. And the day after that,
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: the Big Twelve Tournament was shut down because of the pandemic.
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: So the last basketball game I did for a long time,
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: several months, was that Southern Conference Tournament championship. And Sam
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: Godwin was the center for Wafford in that game. That
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: was five years ago, and he's still playing playing for
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: the Oklahoma Sooners. So he's he's at the very least
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: a sixty year senior because that was five years ago
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: to played, so at the very least it's his sixt year,
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: if not more than that.
- 1:25:32Speaker 2: Rodney was also.
- 1:25:33Speaker 3: Asked about the toll that playing these games can take
- 1:25:38Speaker 3: on a basketball team and on a coaching staff as well.
- 1:25:41Speaker 7: Yeah, Cory, I mean we talked to that guys all
- 1:25:44Speaker 7: the time about this whole month of January. It's about
- 1:25:46Speaker 7: the grind.
- 1:25:48Speaker 6: You know.
- 1:25:49Speaker 7: You start conference playing, you start playing teams, you got
- 1:25:52Speaker 7: a body of work right now where people know, we
- 1:25:55Speaker 7: know what they're gonna do, they know what we're gonna do.
- 1:25:57Speaker 6: Now it's gonna get down to who's gonna.
- 1:25:59Speaker 7: Put who's will on who for forty minutes, you know,
- 1:26:03Speaker 7: and and you know, and persevere through adversity of the game.
- 1:26:09Speaker 7: You know, the game for forty minutes. And so that's
- 1:26:11Speaker 7: kind of what it gets down to right now. I
- 1:26:13Speaker 7: think a lot of times, you know, it's the mental
- 1:26:16Speaker 7: o the physical, you know. I think it's the psychic
- 1:26:19Speaker 7: of your team that you've got to continue to.
- 1:26:21Speaker 6: Work with every day, you know. I like where our.
- 1:26:24Speaker 7: Team is right now, I mean we we've obviously haven't
- 1:26:27Speaker 7: got the results we wanted to this point right now.
