Speaker 1: Chapter seven, which once more demonstrates the uselessness of passports
• 0:05
Speaker 1: as aids to detectives. The detective passed down the key
• 0:11
Speaker 1: and rapidly made his way to the Consul's office, where
• 0:15
Speaker 1: he was at once admitted to the presence of that official.
• 0:18
Speaker 1: Conseil said he, without preamble, I have strong reasons for
• 0:22
Speaker 1: believing that my man is a passenger on the Mongolia,
• 0:26
Speaker 1: and he narrated what had just passed concerning the passport. Well,
• 0:31
Speaker 1: mister Vicks replied the consul. I shall not be sorry
• 0:35
Speaker 1: to see the rascal's face, but perhaps he won't come here.
• 0:39
Speaker 1: That is, if he is the person you suppose him
• 0:42
Speaker 1: to be. A robber doesn't quite like to leave traces
• 0:45
Speaker 1: of his flight behind him. And besides, he is not
• 0:49
Speaker 1: obliged to have his passport countersigned. If he is as
• 0:53
Speaker 1: shrewd as I think he is, consel he will come
• 0:57
Speaker 1: to have his passport visaed. Yes, passports are only good
• 1:02
Speaker 1: for annoying honest folks and aiding in the flight of rogues.
• 1:06
Speaker 1: I assure you it will be quite the thing for
• 1:08
Speaker 1: him to do. But I hope you will not visa
• 1:10
Speaker 1: the passport. Why not if the passport is genuine. I
• 1:15
Speaker 1: have no right to refuse. Still, I must keep this
• 1:19
Speaker 1: man here until I can get a warrant to arrest
• 1:22
Speaker 1: him from London. Ah, that's your lookout, but I cannot.
• 1:28
Speaker 1: The Consul did not finish his sentence, for as he spoke,
• 1:31
Speaker 1: a knock was heard at the door, and two strangers entered,
• 1:35
Speaker 1: one of whom was the servant whom Fix had met
• 1:37
Speaker 1: on the quay. The other, who was his master, held
• 1:40
Speaker 1: out his passport with the request that the Consul would
• 1:43
Speaker 1: do him the favor to visa it. The Consul took
• 1:47
Speaker 1: the document and carefully read it, whilst Fix observed, or
• 1:50
Speaker 1: rather devoured the stranger with his eyes from a corner
• 1:54
Speaker 1: of the room. You are, mister, Phileas Fogg, said the consul,
• 1:59
Speaker 1: after reading the passport. I am, and this man is
• 2:04
Speaker 1: your servant. He is a Frenchman named Passepartout. You are
• 2:11
Speaker 1: from London, yes, and you are going to Bombay. Very good, sir.
• 2:20
Speaker 1: You know that a visa is useless and that no
• 2:22
Speaker 1: passport is required. I know it, sir, replied Phileas Fogg.
• 2:28
Speaker 1: But I wish to prove by your visa that I
• 2:31
Speaker 1: came by Suez. Very well, Sir. The Consul proceeded to
• 2:37
Speaker 1: sign and date the passport, after which he added his
• 2:40
Speaker 1: official seal. Mister Fogg paid the customary fee, coldly bowed,
• 2:45
Speaker 1: and went out, followed by his servant. Well, queried the detective.
• 2:51
Speaker 1: Well he looks an acts like a perfectly honest man,
• 2:56
Speaker 1: replied the Consul. Possibly, but that is not the question.
• 3:00
Speaker 1: Do you think, Conseil, that this phlegmatic gentleman resembles feature
• 3:04
Speaker 1: by feature the robber whose description I have received. I
• 3:08
Speaker 1: concede that, but then you know all descriptions. I'll make
• 3:13
Speaker 1: certain of it, interrupted Fix. The servant seems to me
• 3:17
Speaker 1: less mysterious than the master. Besides, he's a Frenchman and
• 3:21
Speaker 1: can't help talking. Excuse me for a little while, Council
• 3:26
Speaker 1: Fix started off in search of Passepartout. Meanwhile, mister Fogg,
• 3:30
Speaker 1: after leaving the consulate, repaired to the key, gave some
• 3:34
Speaker 1: orders to Passepartout, went off to the Mongolian a boat
• 3:38
Speaker 1: and descended to his cabin. He took up his note book,
• 3:41
Speaker 1: which contained the following memoranda. Left London Wednesday, October second
• 3:47
Speaker 1: at eight forty five p m. Reached Paris Thursday, October
• 3:52
Speaker 1: third at seven twenty a M. Left Paris Thursday at
• 3:57
Speaker 1: eight forty a m. Reach Turin by Mount Cennies Friday,
• 4:02
Speaker 1: October fourth at six thirty five a M. Left Turin
• 4:07
Speaker 1: Friday at seven twenty a m. Arrived at Brindisi Saturday,
• 4:13
Speaker 1: October fifth at four p M. Sailed on the Mongolia
• 4:17
Speaker 1: Saturday at five p M. Reached Suez Wednesday, October ninth
• 4:23
Speaker 1: at eleven a m. Total of hours spent one hundred
• 4:27
Speaker 1: fifty eight plus or in days six days and a half.
• 4:33
Speaker 1: These dates were inscribed in an itinerary, divided into columns
• 4:38
Speaker 1: indicating the month, the day of the month, and the
• 4:40
Speaker 1: day for the stipulated and actual arrivals at each principal
• 4:44
Speaker 1: point parents Brindisi, Suez, Bombay, Calcutta, Singapore, Hong Kong, Yokohama,
• 4:52
Speaker 1: San Francisco, New York, and London from the second of
• 4:56
Speaker 1: October to the twenty first of December, and giving a
• 4:59
Speaker 1: space for setting down the gain made or the loss
• 5:02
Speaker 1: suffered on arrival at each locality. This methodical record thus
• 5:07
Speaker 1: contained an account of everything needed, and mister Fogg always
• 5:11
Speaker 1: knew whether he was behindhand or in advance of his time.
• 5:15
Speaker 1: On this Friday, October ninth, he noted his arrival at Suez,
• 5:20
Speaker 1: and observed that he had as yet neither gained nor lost.
• 5:24
Speaker 1: He sat down quietly to breakfast in his cabin, never
• 5:27
Speaker 1: once thinking of inspecting the town, being one of those
• 5:30
Speaker 1: Englishmen who are wont to see foreign countries through the
• 5:33
Speaker 1: eyes of their domestics. End of chapter
