- 0:11Hello, friends. It's Sean here.
- 0:14It's Tuesday. It's the 15th of July.
- 0:17So good to have your company. I hope you're going well.
- 0:19I hope you're warm wherever you are.
- 0:22Boy, I am literally wrapped up in a blanket right now because
- 0:25it's chilly. Yeah, the the the shortest day
- 0:29of the year might be past in this part of the world, but the
- 0:32coldest days, I reckon, are here.
- 0:35But that's OK. Cold and warm.
- 0:37The seasons we go through, this is part of life, right?
- 0:40And Speaking of seasons that we go through as part of life, we
- 0:44are continuing this season through the work of Moses,
- 0:48writing down these instructions from God in the book of
- 0:51Deuteronomy. And today is the last day that
- 0:54we will be reading about that 5th chapter, not that 5th
- 0:58chapter, that 5th commandment that talks about human
- 1:02authority, honouring the one's mother and father, But not just
- 1:05that. Today, God explores the passing
- 1:09of authority, His authority to his priests, to His prophets,
- 1:15and to those who would then wield that authority as people
- 1:18leading their communities. And it's a good reminder for us
- 1:23as we think we're very important, authoritative people
- 1:27to know where authority truly comes from.
- 1:29So join me friends, as we read together Deuteronomy chapter 18.
- 1:44Remember that the Levitical priests, that is, the whole of
- 1:49the tribe of Levi, will receive no allotment of land among the
- 1:53other tribes in Israel. Instead, the priests and Levites
- 1:57will eat from the special gifts given to the Lord, for that is
- 2:00their share. They will have no land of their
- 2:03own among the Israelites. The Lord Himself is their
- 2:06special possession, just as He promised them.
- 2:11These are the parts the priest may claim as their share from
- 2:14the cattle, sheep, and goats that the people bring as
- 2:17offerings, the shoulder, the cheeks, and the stomach.
- 2:22You must also give to the priests the first share of the
- 2:25grain, the new wine, the olive oil, and the wool at shearing
- 2:29time. For the Lord your God chose the
- 2:32tribe of Levi out of all your tribes to minister in the Lord's
- 2:36name forever. Suppose a Levite chooses to move
- 2:40from his town in Israel, wherever he is living, to the
- 2:44place the Lord chooses for worship.
- 2:46He may minister there in the name of the Lord his God, just
- 2:50like all his fellow Levites who are serving the Lord there.
- 2:53He may eat his share of the sacrifices and offerings, even
- 2:57if he also receives support from his family.
- 3:01When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, be very
- 3:06careful not to imitate the detestable customs of the
- 3:09nations living there. For example, never sacrifice
- 3:13your son or daughter as a burnt offering.
- 3:16And do not let your people practise fortune telling, or use
- 3:20sorcery, or interpret omens, or engage in witchcraft, or cast
- 3:26spells, or function as mediums of psychics, or call forth the
- 3:30spirits of the dead. Anyone who does these things is
- 3:34detestable to the Lord. It is because the other nations
- 3:38have done these detestable things that the Lord your God
- 3:40will drive them out ahead of you.
- 3:43But you must be blameless before the Lord your God.
- 3:47The nations you are about to displace consult sorcerers and
- 3:51fortune tellers, but the Lord your God forbids you to do such
- 3:55things. Moses continued.
- 3:59The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from
- 4:03among your fellow Israelites. You must listen to him, for this
- 4:08is what you yourselves requested of the Lord your God when you
- 4:11were assembled at Mount Sinai. You said, don't let us hear the
- 4:15voice of the Lord our God anymore, or see this blazing
- 4:18fire, for we will die. Then the Lord said to me, What
- 4:23they have said is right. I will raise up a prophet like
- 4:27you from among their fellow Israelites.
- 4:30I will put my words in his mouth, and he will tell the
- 4:33people everything I command them.
- 4:36I will personally deal with anyone who will not listen to
- 4:40the messages the prophet proclaims on my behalf.
- 4:44But any prophet who falsely claims to speak in my name, or
- 4:48who speaks in the name of another God must die.
- 4:53But you may wonder, how will we know whether or not a prophecy
- 4:57is from the Lord? If the prophet speaks in the
- 5:00Lord's name, but his prediction does not happen or come true,
- 5:04you will know that the Lord did not give that message.
- 5:07That prophet has spoken without my authority and need not be
- 5:11feared. Lord, thank you that you are
- 5:25such a generous God. You wield authority, absolute
- 5:29authority over all your creation and you generously share that
- 5:35authority with us. You give us authority over this
- 5:39earth to rule and Co create and sustain it, and you also give us
- 5:46authority within our societies that we can live ordered,
- 5:50structured lives ultimately under you.
- 5:55Lord, help us remember that all authority is yours, and if we
- 5:59are tempted to wield authority in a way that is not consistent
- 6:03with you and your loving heart, Lord, convict us of your ways.
- 6:08Continue to draw us back to You as our perfect example of how
- 6:14authority is used. We love you and we are humbled
- 6:20by the way that you love and you lead.
- 6:24Hold us tightly in your embrace as we pray all of this in Jesus
- 6:30name, Amen.
