- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his Word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Today we are in First Timothy
- 0:18chapter 1 and in verses 12 through 17.
- 0:22First Timothy 1 verses 12 through 17 did a long intro for
- 0:28the book yesterday, so I will not do that today.
- 0:30If you want to know more about the book, go watch or listen to
- 0:34yesterday's episode. The letter of First Timothy is a
- 0:37letter written from Paul to Timothy.
- 0:39Timothy had been left in the city of Ephesus in order to do
- 0:44some important things for the Ephesian church.
- 0:48And Paul mentioned in last episode that the important thing
- 0:53that Timothy was called to do was to correct some false
- 0:58teaching and some false teachers.
- 1:02That was certainly going to be a scary thing that Timothy was
- 1:06working through that when an apostle is scared enough about
- 1:10the state of a church that he leaves behind one of his own
- 1:14traveling companions in order to right what was wrong, you know
- 1:19that the church was in dire straits.
- 1:21And so who wants to encourage Timothy here in this portion in
- 1:26verses 12 through 17 through his own testimony in effect, to say,
- 1:32Timothy, I know that you can accomplish the work that God has
- 1:37for you. They are with those believers
- 1:39that we love, that we have spent a lot of time with, and I am the
- 1:44perfect example that God can accomplish the impossible
- 1:48because He did the impossible with me.
- 1:50Let's read through these verses and see what Paul's testimony
- 1:54was and how it affects how you and I Live Today and the hope
- 1:58that we can have as we encounter hopeless situations in the
- 2:03day-to-day. He says.
- 2:04I give thanks to Christ Jesus our Lord, who has strengthened
- 2:08me because he considered me faithful, appointing me to the
- 2:13ministry even though I was formerly A blasphemer, A
- 2:17persecutor, and an arrogant man. But I received mercy because I
- 2:22acted out of ignorance and unbelief, and the grace of our
- 2:26Lord overflowed along with the faith and love that are in
- 2:31Christ Jesus. This saying is trustworthy and
- 2:34deserving a full acceptance. Christ Jesus came into the world
- 2:38to save sinners, and I am the worst of them.
- 2:42But I received mercy for this reason, so that in me the worst
- 2:47of them, Christ Jesus, might demonstrate His extraordinary
- 2:51patience as an example to those who would believe in Him for
- 2:55eternal life. Now to the King, immortal,
- 2:58sorry, eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God be honor
- 3:03and glory forever and ever. Amen.
- 3:08I love Paul's testimony. That is, he reflects on who he
- 3:12was before Jesus and who he was then.
- 3:15Now, as a result of Jesus, he can't go through that portion
- 3:21and talk about his life before and after without ending that
- 3:27section. And man, God is awesome.
- 3:30He is eternal, He is immortal, He is invisible, and He deserves
- 3:34glory because of what He has done in me.
- 3:38And I hope that would be your response as you think about your
- 3:41life and your walk with God, that you would be motivated to
- 3:45glory as a result of what God has done in and through you.
- 3:51Let's start now in verse #12 So to Timothy, who has an important
- 3:56mission that he needs to accomplish and he needs to tell
- 3:59some people no, he needs to remove some people from
- 4:02leadership. Paul says it'll be OK.
- 4:06He says I give thanks to Christ Jesus our Lord who has
- 4:09strengthened me. Timothy's going to need some
- 4:11strength. And so Paul says I know that God
- 4:14will strengthen you because he has strengthened me.
- 4:18And he says because he considered me faithful, putting
- 4:21appointing me to the ministry. He says God called me to be a
- 4:25preacher and a teacher, a leader of churches, just as he is
- 4:29called you, Timothy. And you know my background and I
- 4:32know your background that Timothy was not in the same
- 4:37place before Jesus that Paul was.
- 4:39Paul was, if you will, he was much, much worse.
- 4:42He wasn't just like it wasn't simply that Paul didn't know
- 4:46about Jesus. It was Paul was actively
- 4:49fighting against Jesus. He was attacking Christians.
- 4:52He was consenting to their deaths.
- 4:54He was bringing them all across Jerusalem and Judea, and he was
- 4:59going literally to another country in Syria in order to
- 5:02bring back believers in Jesus and put them on trial so that
- 5:07they would be killed. So Paul says, all right, hey,
- 5:11Timothy, I know you might be scared about the mission that I
- 5:13have for you. Sometimes God asks us to do
- 5:15scary things, to do fearful things.
- 5:18But he says, I want you to know that God has put you in this
- 5:22place and God has put people far less equipped with far greater
- 5:28sins into these positions before you.
- 5:32And so you can have some confidence knowing that if God
- 5:35has been there for me, Paul, then God will be there for you.
- 5:38Timothy, he says he considered me faithful, appointing me to
- 5:43the ministry. I'll, I'll mention this as well.
- 5:47There is and our church leaders, a wonderful truth that we hold
- 5:55in tandem. Number one, that there is
- 5:57absolutely a human element to those that are the pastors and
- 6:02leaders of local churches. Well, I can say with the Apostle
- 6:09Paul from what Scripture says that the Holy Spirit and God
- 6:12himself has placed me here as the pastor at Tabernacle.
- 6:17I also recognize that the body of believers here, the
- 6:22congregation here voted me to become the pastor.
- 6:26That they said in that congregational members meeting
- 6:32they are on I think was like October 29th, 2023, they said we
- 6:37believe that God has called Brian to be the pastor of our
- 6:42church. And so there is a human element
- 6:47to local church leadership that not just any person could walk
- 6:52up to Tabernacle Baptist Church and say God has told me that I
- 6:57am y'all's pastor. Now there is no, there is a,
- 7:03there has to be a volition of the congregation that they say,
- 7:07yes, we do believe that this is the person that the Lord has
- 7:11appointed. But I am not just at Tabernacle
- 7:15because some some people want me here or because enough people
- 7:21don't want to get rid of me. Yet God the Holy Spirit has
- 7:26police me here and God Jesus Christ has appointed me to the
- 7:31ministry that I would serve the Church of Jesus Christ.
- 7:35And here that's what Paul is telling Timothy.
- 7:37He says, I want you to recognize that it's not just Paul sending
- 7:41you and it's not just the Ephesian believers putting up
- 7:44with you, but God has put you in this position.
- 7:47Now, some people have abused that phrasing to say, I can do
- 7:52whatever I want. I can sin, I can steal.
- 7:57I can, you know, be unquestionable in the sense
- 8:03that, you know, if someone would say, hey, here's this like
- 8:06character thing, here's what it means to walk with Jesus, and
- 8:09you're not doing that. You can't just say, well, God
- 8:11put me here. No, we have to walk in the
- 8:13Spirit. We have to be godly people.
- 8:16But what a comfort it is for pastors.
- 8:20And I'll say for you, wherever God has placed you.
- 8:23So if you're a parent, God has appointed you to be the parent
- 8:27of your kids or to be the grandparent of your
- 8:29grandchildren. And if God has placed you there,
- 8:32then you have an unshakeability in that role that you can say
- 8:38until, until God moves me from this position, if you will, as
- 8:44as I'm a parent of my kids, until God either takes me or
- 8:49Brian or Rev home, I am their dad.
- 8:53And so as a result of that, I know that I have a holy mission
- 8:57and a purpose that is not dependent on whether B or EV
- 9:01like what I have to say or what my instructions are for them as
- 9:05I'm trying to raise them in the right way.
- 9:07And so it is for churches as well that until the Lord moves
- 9:12me or closes down Tabernacle Baptist Church that God has
- 9:16called me here to these people to love them, to care for them,
- 9:21to provide them with the word of God like hopefully I'm doing
- 9:24right now. And so because God has put me
- 9:26here, it doesn't in one sense, it doesn't matter what opinions
- 9:33could be from a person if someone's listening to this.
- 9:36I am not aware of any attempts for like a coup or something I'm
- 9:40saying here as Paul is giving this to Timothy to say God has
- 9:45appointed you to this ministry and so be be firm in it.
- 9:50Stick with it because there are going to be people that don't
- 9:54like that you are insisting on God's way as opposed to what
- 9:58they were doing, what these false teachers were doing in
- 10:01their own way. So he says God has appointed me
- 10:03to this ministry. Verse 13, even though I was
- 10:07formerly A blasphemer, A persecutor, and an arrogant man,
- 10:13Paul says I persecuted the church, I blasphemed the name of
- 10:16Jesus and I said that he was not God and that he did not need to
- 10:19be worshipped. And he says, and I was an
- 10:22arrogant man, I was proud. And these are things that should
- 10:26not be typical of a current believer or of a current pastor.
- 10:35Arrogance and pride to say I am someone special and so you all
- 10:41have to listen to me. That's not a good thing.
- 10:43Now a pastor that would say God has called me to this place and
- 10:47I have to operate in accordance with what my conscience says
- 10:52from the word of God. That's not being arrogant.
- 10:56But any pastor that would say listen kind of my way or the
- 11:00highway or you know, you, you either need to get on the bus or
- 11:04get under the bus, as I've unfortunately heard pastors say
- 11:09before, that is a spirit of arrogance.
- 11:12And so I want to encourage you don't have the same mindset as
- 11:17here. What Paul says, Here's why I was
- 11:19before Christ. And very unfortunately, whether
- 11:22it's pastors or whether it's just everyday Christians, many
- 11:25of us excuse arrogance and we say, I am someone special and my
- 11:31will needs to be done. And that is never the right way
- 11:34to go. The right way is always, what
- 11:36does the Lord want to do? How is God guiding?
- 11:39What does the word of God say? And then let's be faithful.
- 11:43Let's follow. Our conscience is based on the
- 11:45word of God. And if that, you know, makes us
- 11:49friends, wonderful, glad for it. If there comes times when then
- 11:54there's some head butting, then we try to follow what Paul told
- 11:58the Ephesian church in Ephesians 5, which is well.
- 12:03And in Hebrews 13, we submit to the elders of our local church,
- 12:07to the pastors of our local church to say, all right, if the
- 12:11elders, if the pastors have this will and I have this will and it
- 12:14does not align, I'll go with my pastors because that's what
- 12:18Scripture commands me to do. If it's two believers and maybe
- 12:21they have different ideas of what they should do.
- 12:23Ephesians 521 says submitting yourselves 1 to another in the
- 12:28fear of God, that we ought to always have a humility to say it
- 12:32doesn't have to be my way. And I that doesn't mean that I
- 12:35don't have ideas, that I don't have thoughts, that I don't have
- 12:38suggestions. Those are always good things to
- 12:41have and bring those to the table.
- 12:43Because it might be that the Spirit is leading in you to
- 12:46bring something to attention that other people might not have
- 12:49thought about or might not have seen before.
- 12:51And that as a result of you opening your mouth and allowing
- 12:55the Spirit to move and speak in and through you, that something
- 13:00great might happen for the church.
- 13:02But if it's just your thought and it's not what the Spirit has
- 13:05and the Spirit has a different direction for the church,
- 13:08embrace being able to say, it's OK if it's not my way, I'll tell
- 13:14you guys and then I'll, I'll promise I'll move on to another
- 13:17figure of in in one second. Even as the pastor of
- 13:21Tabernacle, there are things that like, and actually my, my
- 13:25elders know this. There are things that if I could
- 13:27just, you know, snap my fingers and make this change at the
- 13:31church. There's ten different things at
- 13:34the church at least that if I could just snap my fingers, I
- 13:37would change right now at the church.
- 13:39But it doesn't have to be my way, and not everything has to
- 13:42be my preference. And so even as the pastor, I
- 13:46submit to the elders that together we are praying over
- 13:49things, we are agonizing over things we are thinking through.
- 13:53All right, what are the logistics of this?
- 13:55How would this affect this group within our church?
- 13:58And how would this help these people?
- 14:00And what's the sustainability of this?
- 14:03Do we have the finances to accomplish this?
- 14:06And so together as the elders, like we are praying and we are
- 14:10seeking the face of God. And so I'm thankful that even as
- 14:13a pastor, I get to encourage the rest of the church body.
- 14:16Hey, submit to the elders just like I submit to the elders.
- 14:20And then that's something that I need to follow through in my own
- 14:24heart and life to go, all right, I want to help them accomplish
- 14:28the mission that we have together as a church, that if
- 14:33the elders are like, hey, we're going to be doing this outreach,
- 14:36you know, this Saturday in the month, great.
- 14:38I want to be in on that. If they're like, hey, we don't
- 14:42think that doing this thing in this way would be helpful for us
- 14:45during the season. I'm not then going to kick up a
- 14:48bus and go, all right, well, I'm just going to try and stir up
- 14:51public opinion against that choice.
- 14:53So that way we can do what I want to do in the way that I
- 14:55want to do. No, that's not good.
- 14:57Instead, maybe we submit to one another.
- 14:59Maybe we have humility, not pride.
- 15:03So Paul says I was formerly A blasphemer, persecutor, and an
- 15:07arrogant man. He says, but I received mercy
- 15:10because I did it. I acted out of ignorance in
- 15:14unbelief. For those in your life that do
- 15:17not know the Lord or those that have not submitted to Christ's
- 15:23lordship in their life, I think hear what Paul says.
- 15:28He says I obtain mercy because I acted out of ignorance, in
- 15:31unbelief. The one that does not have the
- 15:35Holy Spirit of God will not react well.
- 15:40They they're not going to act like Christians.
- 15:43And I think often we expect that every person should act as
- 15:48though the Holy Spirit of God lives inside of them, that the
- 15:51words that they say all need to be.
- 15:54We expect that their words would all be good, wholesome words
- 15:57that they would never tell lies, that they would never gossip or
- 16:00slander. We assume that those without the
- 16:03Holy Spirit of God will always make like right relational
- 16:07choices with others. And that's just not the case In
- 16:12some of the kind of larger circles in in the group of
- 16:17Baptists that I grew up among, there was sometimes a constant
- 16:24like witch hunt against people in the world that instead of
- 16:31times even of preaching being spent saying, Hey, here's the
- 16:34areas in which you and I are failing to meet what God's word
- 16:41says. There was almost a, hey, let's
- 16:43talk about the sins of people that do not know Jesus and talk
- 16:47about, oh, isn't it so terrible that maybe this singer or this
- 16:51show or something has sin in it? Well, my friend, they are
- 16:55without Jesus Christ. Of course, that's the only thing
- 16:58that they know. And here Paul says I acted out
- 17:01of ignorance, in unbelief. And so may we be faithful even
- 17:06as Stephen who was stoned to death and Paul was right there
- 17:12assenting to his death, holding the clothes, the outer cloaks of
- 17:16those that were stoning Stephen. May we have a faithful gospel
- 17:21witness and realize when the unsaved fail us, when the
- 17:26unsaved say and do things that they should not be doing, that
- 17:29in our mind, we don't go, OK, well, I'm going to write them
- 17:31off. And how dare they, you know,
- 17:33exist. And they're saying, no, may we
- 17:37share the gospel so that those that are far from God and they
- 17:41act like it and they think like it and they talk like it, that
- 17:43they would come to know the Lord.
- 17:46And then don't live all of your life in outrage.
- 17:50I'll say in perpetual outrage against those that don't know
- 17:54Jesus. I very much doubt that.
- 17:58You know, at the time that I'm recording this Super Bowl
- 18:02happened a few weeks ago, I very much doubt that any of the Super
- 18:06Bowl performers or any of the like Turning Point USA halftime
- 18:11performers. I doubt that any of them will
- 18:14see any of the posts that you or I will create about any
- 18:19particular event. And so I can, I can genuinely
- 18:23say, hey, I have some concerns about like profanity and
- 18:27promiscuity and, and content topics and stuff with all sorts
- 18:31of worldly unsaved, those that are not bowing to Christ as
- 18:39Lord, you know, music artists and politicians and all that
- 18:43kind of stuff. I can have genuine concerns
- 18:47about that and not want to imbibe evil into my ears or into
- 18:51my eyes or my life. But a lot of times as
- 18:56Christians, we just perpetually get outraged and we say, oh, I,
- 18:59I hate this. I despise this.
- 19:01I can't believe this unsaved person is doing unsaved things.
- 19:05My friend. They are acting out of ignorance
- 19:08and unbelief. So let's share the gospel with
- 19:11them. And if you say why I don't know
- 19:14how to share the gospel with them, like, you know, I have no
- 19:17interaction with them, well, then that might be a good idea
- 19:21that we might just be having empty words.
- 19:24Or we might just be, if you will, playing to our base
- 19:26without actually doing anything productive in our lives.
- 19:32Verse #14 I love how Paul phrased this.
- 19:35He says the grace of our Lord overflowed.
- 19:39He says God's grace came pouring down like a flood on to my life.
- 19:44He says along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.
- 19:48And what a joy that we have been those that have been overflowed
- 19:51by grace. I just, I love that thought.
- 19:57Verse #15 this saying is trustworthy and deserving a full
- 20:00acceptance. Christ Jesus came into the world
- 20:04to save sinners. That's what Paul says.
- 20:06He says this is the trustworthy statement.
- 20:09Jesus didn't come to save the perfect.
- 20:11Jesus didn't come to be like the perfect example for us.
- 20:16Primarily, Jesus came into the world to save sinners.
- 20:19That we were far off from God, like Paul would be brought near.
- 20:23And so as Paul is saying this to Timothy, he says you're going to
- 20:25deal with some people that right now are false teachers.
- 20:28I was a false teacher. And you, Timothy might be able
- 20:32to rescue the next Paul. He says Christ Jesus came into
- 20:36the world to save sinners, and I'm the worst of them.
- 20:40He says, But I received mercy for this reason, so that in me
- 20:43the worst of them, Christ Jesus might demonstrate his
- 20:47extraordinary patience as an example to those who would
- 20:51believe in him for eternal life. Jesus was patient with Paul, the
- 20:56persecutor and prisoner and killer of Christians.
- 21:00And so Jesus will be patient with you and with whatever loved
- 21:04one, with whatever Co worker, with whatever friend that you
- 21:08have given up hope on. Jesus was patient and played, if
- 21:11you will, the long game with the apostle Paul.
- 21:14And he is able to save all of the persecutors, all of the
- 21:18blasphemers. He's able to save the arrogant
- 21:22and so don't write anyone off. You don't know until they draw
- 21:26their final breath. You do not know what God might
- 21:30do for them. So verse 17, what's the ending
- 21:34now to the king eternal that God never dies.
- 21:38He is going to be with Timothy in every season.
- 21:41He says the king immortal not just that he like lives forever
- 21:46and has been forever in the past, but he will be forever in
- 21:49the future. He says invisible, that though
- 21:52Timothy cannot see God, that God is with him, that God the Holy
- 21:56Spirit lived lives inside of him and he can know that God's
- 22:00presence is with him. Though God is invisible.
- 22:03He says the only God that though Timothy was serving in Ephesus
- 22:06where there were many false gods and idols and temples, that
- 22:10there was only one God that Timothy needed to if you will be
- 22:14afraid of. And I say that in the sense of
- 22:17like awe, reverence, respect, and that was Jesus.
- 22:21He says to him, be honor and glory forever and ever, Amen.
- 22:27So Timothy or you, whoever is listening to ever listening to
- 22:31Tabernacle talk, our God can save the worst of sinners.
- 22:35That's why he came. If you don't know Jesus today,
- 22:39you can turn in faith to him just as Paul did, and you can
- 22:42experience that overflow of grace and faith and love that
- 22:46comes from Jesus. And for every person that you
- 22:50will be witnessing to and every person that you have some
- 22:53strained relationships with, know that the God who saved the
- 22:56worst, the chief of sinners, Paul, can save anyone.
- 23:00And what a joy that that is. There is hope for the ministry
- 23:05and the mission that you and I have as believers to make
- 23:08disciples of all nations. Thanks for tuning in today.
- 23:12And we will conclude First Timothy Chapter 1 next episode.
