- 0:00Have you met someone who is always talking but never saying
- 0:04anything that matters?
- 0:06Well,
- 0:07today we're in Proverbs 25,
- 0:09verse 14,
- 0:10because it's the 25th day of the month.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: Welcome to Marketplace Proverbs and Coffee with Ernie,
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: where a proverb a day keeps stinking thinking at bay.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: Like a bar of soap we use to cleanse our bodies,
- 0:30we seek internal cleansing through the transformative power of
- 0:34God's Word,
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: specifically from the book of Proverbs.
- 0:39Each of these episodes follows the SOAP method,
- 0:44Scripture,
- 0:45Observation,
- 0:47Application,
- 0:48and Prayer.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: We explore the proverb that matches today's date,
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: reflect on its wisdom,
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: apply it to the marketplace leadership,
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: and connect with God through prayer.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: So let's get together in faith, purpose, and practical wisdom.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: Grab your coffee and let's grow together.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: Today's scripture from Proverbs 25,
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: verse 14,
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: using the NLT,
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: the New Living Testament,
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: quote,
- 1:18a person who promises a gift but doesn't give it is like clouds
- 1:23and wind that bring
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: no rain.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: Proverbs 25, 14 from the NLT.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: Now, there was a very famous, very popular,
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: rock and roll soul singer named James Brown from the 1960s.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: I remember him.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: I grew up listening to his music.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: He was called the Godfather of Soul.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: And one of his songs,
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: the words were,
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: quote,
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: like a dull knife,
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: it just isn't cutting,
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: just talking loud and saying nothing.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: You know, that's the perfect commentary.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: on Proverbs 25, 14.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: Empty promises, hollow words, noise without nourishment.
- 2:16Now,
- 2:17that brings me also to fast-forwarding to the 80s when the TV
- 2:23series Cheers was on.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: And I liked to watch it.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: It was one of those weekly,
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: I forget which night of the week it came on,
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: but it was something that I watched.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: And there was one character named Cliff Clavin.
- 2:39Now,
- 2:39he was the neighborhood postal worker and,
- 2:43frankly,
- 2:43the certified to know it all.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: He always had something to say, whether it added value or not.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: Now, it made for good comedy, but not great conversations.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: Now, too many people, especially in sales, fall into that trap.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: They mistake talking for connecting.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: They confuse presence with purpose.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: And when it comes to promises...
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: Vague commitments and overstatements do more harm than good.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: They create anticipation with no delivery.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: Wind and clouds with no rain.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: Wow,
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: I seem like there's a mirror in front of my microphone now,
- 3:28or maybe one of those things looking back in the past in the
- 3:3470s when I was
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: younger.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: Well, let's talk about applying all of this.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: There's salt, sincerity, and saying less.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: A mentor once told me, quote, words are like salt.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: Use too much and people complain.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: Use too little and no one eats the meal.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: Use just enough and everyone loves it, end quote.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: Now,
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: I've seen salespeople talk themselves right out of a transaction,
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: right out of a commitment,
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: because they talk too much.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: They had the yes, but didn't know when to stop.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: Once again, those mirrors are coming up in front of my microphone.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: They turn clarity into confusion.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: They turn connection into a clanging noise.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: The Apostle Paul puts it bluntly in 1 Corinthians 13,
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: 1,
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: quote,
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: You know,
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: even in the spiritual life,
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: noise without love is just that,
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: noise.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: Now, the same is true
- 4:57in leadership,
- 4:59management,
- 5:00customer success mastery,
- 5:02and our daily relationships.
- 5:06If our words do not reflect love,
- 5:10empathy,
- 5:11and value,
- 5:13will people stop listening?
- 5:16So allow me to ask all of us,
- 5:19where are we talking loud but saying nothing?
- 5:26Today's customer success code,
- 5:28empty promises are like thunder without rain.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: Love, follow through, and empathy make our voices matter.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: Today's action points, let's move from noise to nourishment.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: Action point number one is let's audit our promises.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: Have we made any verbal commitments that we haven't followed through on?
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: Well, let's start restoring that trust today.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: Action point number two, read the room.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: Before our next meeting, let's ask God for discernment.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: Then observe, listen, and respond thoughtfully.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: Action point number three, let's salt our words wisely.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: Let's aim for clarity, not complexity.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: Let's think before we speak.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: Speak less, but say more.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: Action point number five, reclaim the lost.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: Was there a deal or opportunity that faded due to over-explaining?
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: Well, let's reach back out with humility and clarity.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: And action point number five, let's lead with love.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: Let's ask, is what I'm saying adding value?
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: Is what I'm saying adding significance to?
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: Or am I just trying to sound smart?
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: Lord Jesus,
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: thank you for showing enough love for us that you died for us,
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: despite our selfishness and self-centered behavior.
- 7:07Please help me connect with those around me rather than just
- 7:11being a thundercloud
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: full of noise with no rain.
- 7:16Help me lead with purpose,
- 7:18speak with sincerity,
- 7:20and follow through with integrity.
- 7:23Fill my mouth with truth,
- 7:26and my heart with empathy,
- 7:28and my actions with meaning.
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: In your name I pray.
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: Amen.
