- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is Wednesday, it's the
- 0:164th of December. And I'm glad that you have
- 0:19tapped on play and said, Sean, come on in.
- 0:22Let us take a moment and read together because that's why I'm
- 0:26here reading so that you and I can do this together.
- 0:29And I'm so grateful that you have taken this moment so that
- 0:33we can do this. And my prayer is that God will
- 0:36continue to speak to you and to shape the cadence and rhythm of
- 0:41your day with his Word that you can be so sure beyond any doubt
- 0:47that he, as he moved back then in this story, he moves today in
- 0:51your story. And today we reach a chapter
- 0:55where Paul settles down for a bit.
- 0:58He has been moving from place to place, but here he reaches
- 1:02Ephesus, and he'll settle down an Ephesus for a couple of years
- 1:05as history tells us. So let's hear that story as he
- 1:09arrives and begins his ministry there as we read together Acts
- 1:13chapter 19. While Apollos was in Corinth,
- 1:26Paul travelled through the interior regions until he
- 1:30reached Ephesus on the coast, where he found several
- 1:32believers. Did you receive the Holy Spirit
- 1:35when you believed? He asked them.
- 1:38No, they replied. We haven't even heard that there
- 1:40is a Holy Spirit. Then what baptisms did you
- 1:44experience? He asked and they replied The
- 1:47baptism of John. Paul said John's baptism called
- 1:52for repentance of sin, but John himself told the people to
- 1:56believe in the one who would come later, meaning Jesus.
- 1:59As soon as they heard this, they were baptised in the name of the
- 2:04Lord Jesus. Then when Paul laid his hands on
- 2:07them, the Holy Spirit came on them and they spoke in other
- 2:12tongues and prophesied. There were about 12 men in all.
- 2:17Then Paul went to the synagogue and preached boldly for the next
- 2:21three months, I giving persuasively about the Kingdom
- 2:24of God. But some became stubborn,
- 2:27rejecting his message and publicly speaking against the
- 2:30way. So Paul left the synagogue and
- 2:33took the believers with him. Then he held daily discussions
- 2:37at the lecture hall of Tyrannis. This went on for the next two
- 2:42years, so that people throughout the province of Asia, both Jews
- 2:45and Greeks, heard the word of the Lord.
- 2:49God gave Paul the power to perform unusual miracles.
- 2:53When handkerchiefs or aprons that had merely touched his skin
- 2:58were placed on sick people, they were healed of their diseases
- 3:01and evil spirits were expelled. A group of Jews was travelling
- 3:05from town to town casting out evil spirits.
- 3:09They tried to use the name of the Lord Jesus in their
- 3:11incantation, saying, I command you in the name of Jesus, whom
- 3:16Paul preaches, to come out. Seven sons of Seva, a leading
- 3:20priest, were doing this but one time when they tried it, the
- 3:24evil spirit replied, I know Jesus and I know Paul, but who
- 3:32are you? Then the man with the evil
- 3:34spirit leapt on them, overpowered them, and attacked
- 3:37them with such violence that they fled from the house naked
- 3:41and battered. The story of what had happened
- 3:44spread quickly all through Ephesus to Jews and Greeks
- 3:47alike. A solemn fear descended on the
- 3:50city, and the name of the Lord Jesus was greatly honoured.
- 3:54Many who became believers confessed their sinful
- 3:57practises. A number of them who had been
- 4:00practising sorcery brought their incantation books and burned
- 4:04them at a public bonfire. The value of the books was
- 4:08several $1,000,000 So the message about the Lord spread
- 4:12widely and had a powerful effect.
- 4:15Afterward Paul felt compelled by the Spirit to go over to
- 4:19Macedonia and Ikaya before going to Jerusalem, and after that he
- 4:24said I must go on to Rome. He sent 2 assistants, Timothy
- 4:30and Erastus, ahead to Macedonia, while he stayed a while longer
- 4:33in the province of Asia. About that time serious trouble
- 4:39developed an Ephesus concerning the way it began with Demetrius,
- 4:43a silversmith who had a large business manufacturing silver
- 4:47shrines of the Greek goddess Artemis.
- 4:50He kept many Craftsman busy. He called them together along
- 4:54with other employed in similar trades and addressed them as
- 4:56follows. Gentlemen, you know that our
- 5:00wealth comes from this business. But as you have seen and heard,
- 5:05this man Paul has persuaded many people that handmade gods aren't
- 5:10really gods at all. And he's done this not only here
- 5:13in Ephesus, but throughout the entire province.
- 5:17Of course, I'm not just talking about the loss of public respect
- 5:20for our business. I'm also concerned that the
- 5:23temple of the great goddess Artemis will lose its influence,
- 5:28and that Artemis, this magnificent goddess worshipped
- 5:32throughout the province of Asia and all around the world, will
- 5:35be robbed of her great prestige. At this, their anger boiled, and
- 5:42they began shouting. Great is Artemis of the
- 5:46Ephesians. Soon the whole city was filled
- 5:49with confusion. Everyone rushed to the
- 5:51Amphitheatre, dragging along Gaius and Aristarchus, who were
- 5:56Paul's travelling companions from Macedonia.
- 5:59Paul wanted to go in too, but the believers wouldn't let him.
- 6:02Some of the officials of the province, friends of Paul, also
- 6:06sent a message to him, begging him not to risk his life by
- 6:10entering the Amphitheatre. Inside, the people were all
- 6:13shouting someone, thing and some another.
- 6:17Everything was in confusion. In fact, most of them didn't
- 6:21even know why they were there. The Jews in the crowd pushed
- 6:24Alexander forward and told him to explain the situation.
- 6:28He motioned for silence and tried to speak, but when the
- 6:32crowds realised he was a Jew, they started shouting again and
- 6:36kept it up for about two hours. Great is Artemis of the
- 6:41Ephesians. Great is Artemis of the
- 6:43Ephesians. At last the mayor was able to
- 6:47quiet them down enough to speak. Citizens of Ephesus, he said.
- 6:53Everyone knows that Ephesus is the official guardian of the
- 6:57temple of the great Artemus, whose image fell down to us from
- 7:01heaven. Since this is an undeniable
- 7:05fact, you should stay calm and not do anything rash.
- 7:09You have brought these men here, but they have stolen nothing
- 7:14from the temple and have not spoken against our goddess.
- 7:18If Demetrius and the Craftsman have a case against them, the
- 7:22courts are in session and the officials can hear the case at
- 7:25once. Let them make formal charges,
- 7:29and if there are complaints about other matters they can be
- 7:32settled in a legal assembly. I am afraid we are in danger of
- 7:37being charged with rioting by the Roman government, since
- 7:41there is no cause for all this commotion, and if Rome demands
- 7:45an explanation, we won't know what to say.
- 7:50Then he dismissed them and they dispersed.
- 8:03Ah Jesus, defence for your Kingdom and message come from
- 8:07the most unlikely sources sometimes.
- 8:11Continue to broaden our mind, to be aware that your plans and
- 8:18your scope is so much broader than anything we can imagine.
- 8:23And Lord, help us to obey each step that you place in front of
- 8:27us. And when it sometimes feels like
- 8:29we're not doing enough, Lord, give us Your peace to know that
- 8:36we are called only to take the next step in each moment, the
- 8:41next step in following you and being faithful to You.
- 8:45And Lord, we don't know what's coming in the long term, and we
- 8:49don't know your big plans. And that's hard for us because
- 8:52we like knowing these things. But give us peace to rest in you
- 8:58and your care, Your provision and your vision.
- 9:04For you are a great, great, big God.
- 9:07And we are just little people, dearly loved and included in
- 9:14your kingdom's work. So scoop us up from our lost and
- 9:19wandering ways. Hold us tightly to your chest.
- 9:23Give us your love and your peace.
- 9:26I pray this in Jesus name, Amen.
