- 0:00SPEAKER_02: Well, hello.
- 0:01SPEAKER_02: Let's just roll right in, man.
- 0:03SPEAKER_02: Let's go, man.
- 0:03SPEAKER_02: We're just chatting and then we just it's funny.
- 0:06SPEAKER_02: I wish y'all could see we're just conversation and then boom.
- 0:09SPEAKER_02: Time to go to work.
- 0:10SPEAKER_02: We are ready for work here.
- 0:12SPEAKER_02: So welcome back to 100% maybe.
- 0:14SPEAKER_02: 51.
- 0:15SPEAKER_02: Number 51.
- 0:17SPEAKER_02: We're over.
- 0:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah, there's nothing that exciting about 51.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: You made it through 50.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: We made it past 50.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: Past 50.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: You know, I turned 55 here pretty soon.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: You share a birthday with my daughter.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: You remember that's that's right.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: And do you remember 55?
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: You were not alive when the whole world converted to driving 55.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: There were songs written about how Sammy Hager was, yeah.
- 0:43SPEAKER_02: I drive 55.
- 0:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but what are you saying?
- 0:45SPEAKER_02: Like the speed limit?
- 0:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 0:46SPEAKER_02: What did it used to be before?
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: The interstates.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: I they they that was their way of arriving alive.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: Arrive alive, drive 55.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: Got it.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: That was try to drive 55 on an internet on the interstate now.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: You will be like, dude, we're never getting anywhere.
- 1:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:01SPEAKER_02: It's probably scarier going that slow than it is going 80.
- 1:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:08SPEAKER_02: We I do remember when I was a kid, they changed the interstates in Texas to 70 from probably 60.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: We went to 65.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: What is it now?
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: 65?
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: Or is it 70?
- 1:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so here.
- 1:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:21SPEAKER_02: But I remember when that change happened.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: But it took an act, it took an act of Congress in Florida to get it to 65.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: I was like, dude.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: And they had all the statistics on speed and all that.
- 1:30SPEAKER_02: And everybody's just taking it easy in Florida.
- 1:32SPEAKER_02: No.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: Speech.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: Nobody was doing it.
- 1:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, how's the uh what's the technical speed limit on 98?
- 1:41SPEAKER_02: I'd love to know that.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: Uh there's I don't think there is one.
- 1:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's it's however you feel.
- 1:47SPEAKER_02: It's the Audubon.
- 1:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:49SPEAKER_02: Whatever you think is appropriate.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: And on any trip, you can go from zero to 80.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: Because you never know.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: And 80 is just to get out of the way of somebody who's coming.
- 1:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 2:00SPEAKER_02: Well, that has nothing to do with Hebrews.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: It kind of does.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: It's what we're going to talk about rest today.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: So it's the antithesis of look at how you take it.
- 2:09SPEAKER_02: That's a preacher.
- 2:10SPEAKER_02: You are a pro at this.
- 2:11SPEAKER_02: Oh man.
- 2:12SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 2:12SPEAKER_02: We've got a work cut out for us today.
- 2:15SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 2:16SPEAKER_02: It's going to be awesome.
- 2:17SPEAKER_02: Well, uh, I'm going to tell you my takeaway from last week.
- 2:20SPEAKER_02: Okay, but but for those who are just joining us, we're going to study on Hebrews.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: How long have you been doing this?
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: We're going to study on Hebrews, and um it's a lot.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: We are navigating through the letter to the Hebrews.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: Last week we covered chapters one and two.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: This week we're going to cover chapters three and four.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: A letter that was written by an unknown author, we don't know who it was, um, to Hebrews, which is uh a way of understanding Jewish people, but these are Jewish people who believe that Jesus was the Messiah.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: So the heartbeat behind this letter is um to hold on to the faith in Jesus that they found and don't drift back into the systems of of Judaism.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: And so the letter, the probably the the biggest thing to remember is that Jesus is greater, superior, or better.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: And then the writer is going to list all of the things that would have mattered to a Jewish person the tabernacle, Moses, angels, all the things.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: So Jesus is greater.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: And but what were you gonna hold on to?
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: That's my takeaway.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: That was your takeaway.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: Jesus is greater.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: Jesus is greater.
- 3:31SPEAKER_02: I was gonna just let you know I was paying attention Sunday.
- 3:33SPEAKER_02: That's good.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: And so if anyone if that's the only thing they learn for five weeks, and somebody on the street says, Hey, what's the main point of Hebrews?
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: And Jesus is greater.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: That's a good takeaway.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: And you probably could say greater than and then just drop anything in there after that.
- 3:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 3:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 3:50SPEAKER_02: In three, he's gonna continue to make that point.
- 3:52SPEAKER_02: He is.
- 3:53SPEAKER_02: And then we shift gears a little bit in four.
- 3:58SPEAKER_02: You don't think?
- 3:59SPEAKER_01: Maybe.
- 4:00SPEAKER_02: I think driving that point deeper home, maybe.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: Well, to me, remember the chapter breaks were written after.
- 4:06SPEAKER_02: Sure.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: I believe that chapters three and four are one complete sermon thought that have been jammed together, and I believe the beginning of chapter three is a direct connect to the end of chapter two.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: So it feels like one and two could have been one sermon, three and four could have been one sermon, and go forward.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: So I th I think you're right.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: He makes a solid point in three that then carries over into four and broadens it.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: The word rest is mentioned thirteen times in these two chapters.
- 4:37SPEAKER_01: That's a lot.
- 4:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 4:38SPEAKER_01: So the main point is rest.
- 4:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 4:43SPEAKER_01: Maybe.
- 4:43SPEAKER_02: That's a good one.
- 4:44SPEAKER_02: And maybe we've misunderstood that a little bit.
- 4:46SPEAKER_02: So we can't.
- 4:46SPEAKER_02: Maybe we don't know what rest is.
- 4:48SPEAKER_02: True rest and what he's talking about.
- 4:50SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 4:51SPEAKER_02: I have a fun little uh nugget for you later.
- 4:54SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 4:55SPEAKER_02: About rest.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: Don't leave that nugget out when we get to it.
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: Make sure you because I'll need that for a sermon.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: I'm uh can I call you up on stage when we get to that point?
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: Sure.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: Sure.
- 5:03SPEAKER_02: Um is it harder, do you think, for a non-Jewish person to try to dive into the depth of the audience here, what they would have understood?
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: Do you think it changes the I think if you are n yes on the surface a hundred percent.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: But if you are a if you've been a believer for a while and you are knowledgeable about scripture, you'll have a lot of those things.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: If you are new to scripture and new to faith, it's hard.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: Like I don't I don't know the context.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: I mean, I think you could read through Hebrews and grab a couple things and just keep moving on and know that later on, because the elements of this book are shaped by the story, I think by the story and the history of God with the people of God.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: So it'd be hard to read it through the first time and go, I got that.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: Because this this topic of rest we're gonna talk about today, he pulls the promised land, the day of Sabbath, whatever David was talking about, and a couple other things all together to make a larger point about rest, which he doesn't really make.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: He doesn't really give you his definition of what rest is, other than to allude to the fact that it's more that's what you're gonna get to later.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: It alludes to the fact that it's more than all of those things, that all of those things were a foreshadowing, which is kind of what the book does all the way through.
- 6:35SPEAKER_02: And connects back, back, back to creation because you're talking God's rest from from when he created.
- 6:44SPEAKER_02: So if we're taking back Jesus, the the fulfillment of and future and today restorer, then he's doing the same thing about rest and and bringing that back as well.
- 7:00SPEAKER_02: Showing us all how connected this all is and how fulfilled it all is in Jesus.
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: I I agree.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: I gotta give you the credit for last week.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: The thing that broke for me the message was kind of that moment where you you got real excited because you kind of well, I mean, you put some pieces together and it helped me to kind of settle my heart around the rest of the message.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: But that thought of Jesus being the one that's reordering and bringing things back together, uh so give an order to all of those different relationships makes sense here.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: Because if rest, if rest is more than the promised land, it's more than you know, go through all those different things, then there has to be a rest that God intended for us to have.
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: It doesn't mean the absence of challenge.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: Uh it it but there's a rest that our hearts were intended to have, which to me would have been what God originally intended, thank Garden of Eden.
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: They had work to do.
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: There was challenges that they were facing.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: They had to get up every day and do the stuff that they had to do, but but they were the soul, their their very being was connected in right relationship with God.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: I think that is maybe the the bigger thing.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: But I'm getting way ahead.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: Jumping to the end of chapter four.
- 8:07SPEAKER_02: Well, let's start with three.
- 8:08SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 8:10SPEAKER_02: You said you alluded to last week, Moses is gonna get him some.
- 8:13SPEAKER_02: I think that was a direct quote.
- 8:15SPEAKER_02: Direct quote.
- 8:16SPEAKER_02: Direct quote.
- 8:17SPEAKER_02: Um, so what is Moses getting here?
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: Moses is getting um, he's getting uh the writer of Hebrews compares and contrasts Moses and Jesus, and he says that Jesus is worth is is uh is worthy of more glory than Moses because Moses was a servant in the house of God.
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: Jesus built a house, or God built the house.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: So uh and uh and the builder of the house has is is worthy of more glory than than the one who is in the house or living in the house.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: So he has a direct link to say that Jesus is greater than Moses.
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: Now, if you're Jewish today, or if you're Jewish even back then, you would, if you weren't a believer in Jesus, you'd go, mmm, Moses is a pretty important guy, right?
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: Because Moses, in the in our in our understanding of the faith, was the one who led the Israelites out of Egypt and turned and was a part of turning them into a nation, even though he didn't bring them in the promised land, they left there a million strong, you know, so it grew into the people that would ultimately inhabit the land.
- 9:23SPEAKER_00: So Moses is given credit as maybe the greatest leader.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: Uh Abraham, too, but Moses is the one that really helped to forge that.
- 9:31SPEAKER_02: And Moses having the connection with God that no other human has ever had.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: What a mediator, right?
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: Or moderator, whatever word you want to choose there, also why he's chosen.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: That Moses would go up on the mountain, hear from God, come back down to speak to the people.
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: No mistake that the rhetoric of Hebrews is choosing Moses because Jesus didn't Jesus didn't go up on the mountain and hear from God, he just came down.
- 9:56SPEAKER_00: God came down and walked among us.
- 9:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 10:00SPEAKER_02: Bringing in Moses in this text, then he goes on to talk about the the wilderness.
- 10:09SPEAKER_02: So let's talk about that a little bit.
- 10:11SPEAKER_02: Does it all help make sense of what his greater point is going to be?
- 10:18SPEAKER_02: Do you how do you how do we navigate that and try to hold some of that by taking what he's saying, understanding the references, but then also not getting lost and trying to maybe unpack his thoughts, which we can't we can't know for sure.
- 10:34SPEAKER_00: No, but but you can't not do that.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: You have to do that.
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: Because like the the verses um you get in a chapter four uh twelve and thirteen for the the word of God is living and active sharper than it is.
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: So he that's like an exhortation of the importance of scripture.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: So I think that's him saying, Hey, I'm using this scripture and it's still revealing truth today.
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: So we have to almost try and get into the mind of the writer of Hebrews because check this out, because we had a lot of conversations in there today about translations Hebrew, Greek, Septuagint, all that stuff together.
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: The writer of Hebrews takes Psalm 95, which was written by David, about the story of Moses.
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: So just wrap your mind around that.
- 11:23SPEAKER_00: So so a guy that's in 58 A.D.
- 11:29SPEAKER_00: grabs a story from the time of David or a writing from the time of David that is about a story that was 800 years before the time of David that was delivered to him from God.
- 11:38SPEAKER_00: And he makes an edit right on the front side of it.
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: So the writer of Hebrews edits.
- 11:45SPEAKER_00: So I mean, like, so you ask the question about don't get lost in the weeds.
- 11:49SPEAKER_00: You're in the weeds, we're deep in the weeds on this.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: So in verse 7, if you go back to Psalms, Psalm 95, and you read it, and then read Hebrews 7, therefore, as the Holy Spirit says, if you go back and read Psalm 95, it's the English translation is therefore God says the writer of Hebrews took his now understanding of Jesus, the Father, and the Holy Spirit, and just goes, Oh, that's the Holy Spirit.
- 12:16SPEAKER_00: He just edit it.
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: He just put the edit in there.
- 12:19SPEAKER_02: Creative license.
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: Creative license, right?
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: Because they're holding scripture to make a bigger point.
- 12:23SPEAKER_00: So he takes David's writing about Moses, and then he makes this greater point about rest um and and puts it all together.
- 12:33SPEAKER_00: So uh, so what was your question, man?
- 12:36SPEAKER_00: About don't get lost in the weeds?
- 12:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think just how do you how do you start to navigate this?
- 12:42SPEAKER_02: What is the advice you would have as for someone not to take your time not to get lost in?
- 12:47SPEAKER_00: Take your time, because I I I tried to I I laughed at myself, I got frustrated about the writer Hebrews.
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: I said, Stop doing that.
- 12:53SPEAKER_00: Because this is because honestly, the grab bag of all the things.
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, some of the grab bag of things, but but I have a feeling, and it they didn't do this because they didn't have the scrolls, and he would have had a higher esteem than what we had, he wouldn't be writing in the scroll like we're writing in the scroll because they were very expensive, didn't have a ton of access to it.
- 13:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he's not highlighting in the margins.
- 13:11SPEAKER_00: He's not highlighting the margins because it wasn't they didn't have that's right, it was very valuable.
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but he had Psalm 95, 7 through 11.
- 13:17SPEAKER_00: So my thought is he took that thing, he wrote it on the wall.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: He didn't, but he wrote it on the wall.
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: Then, and he and he goes and he takes the very last verse of it, uh, which is the end of verse 11, and and it's God saying about the children of Israel that missed the promised land, they will not enter my rest.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: So he grabs that phrase and he's going to use it as a proof when you get into chapter four to say God was not speaking to us that we will not enter his rest.
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: He was speaking specifically to those who missed the promised land.
- 13:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 13:55SPEAKER_00: That makes sense.
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: So but but then he takes the word rest and he ferrets it out for the next chapter to make a bigger point.
- 14:03SPEAKER_00: The other thing this Joker does, Joker, the other thing the writer of Hebrews does, is back up to verse um verse 7.
- 14:12SPEAKER_00: Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says, Today, if you hear his voice, he grabs the word today.
- 14:19SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 14:20SPEAKER_01: So let's do some uh uh history timeline.
- 14:27SPEAKER_00: He's taking a writing from David that says today he's remembering the time of Moses, and we already said Moses people, they didn't make it in.
- 14:37SPEAKER_00: But he's saying today you have a shot to be able to get in.
- 14:41SPEAKER_00: Uh-huh.
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: So he carries that thought of today through to say, hey, you Hebrews, that chance is still there.
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: He's not talking about us.
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: Because today you still have a chance.
- 14:50SPEAKER_00: Listen, if you don't harden your hearts, you got that chance.
- 14:52SPEAKER_00: So yeah, you got to get in the weeds to do the work.
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: It's good.
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: I don't know if it's good, but it's the work that he's doing.
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: And he and I think he would want us to do that sort of research.
- 15:01SPEAKER_02: For sure.
- 15:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 15:02SPEAKER_02: And when he's he's not trashing Moses, obviously.
- 15:06SPEAKER_02: He's holding Moses up, saying, hey, Moses was faithful in, Jesus is faithful over or it's the one.
- 15:14SPEAKER_02: And it continues his thought about Jesus being everything in the old testament.
- 15:19SPEAKER_02: He's not saying, hey, just forget it, throw it away.
- 15:21SPEAKER_02: He's saying Jesus, it all pointed to him.
- 15:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 15:25SPEAKER_02: All of that holds pointed to something bigger, yeah.
- 15:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 15:27SPEAKER_02: Which I think is a something to hold to.
- 15:29SPEAKER_02: Like it's it's not like, okay, Jesus has come, I don't need to worry about everything.
- 15:33SPEAKER_00: Throw this book out.
- 15:33SPEAKER_00: He's using the book to prove it.
- 15:34SPEAKER_00: So like I think he would say it mattered.
- 15:36SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 15:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 15:37SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 15:37SPEAKER_02: So again, the warning is like, don't fall back into this old way of worship and the old connection point to God because Jesus is the greater one now.
- 15:46SPEAKER_02: And all of this pointed to him.
- 15:47SPEAKER_02: So it's it is a lot.
- 15:49SPEAKER_02: I um I do just think I think of the newer person and you know, walking through some of this can be can be a lot because you bring up one thing, and then that leads you into there's there's trinity in here, there's going back to creation in here, there's understanding there's deep theological things in here that you have that you have to do.
- 16:08SPEAKER_02: But I I think that's great advice.
- 16:10SPEAKER_02: Take your time.
- 16:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so and and and there's a thousand sermons you could preach out of it, one of which is something we do constantly.
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: And and let's go back to the thought on the angels.
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: He ends chapter one by saying they're ministering spirits sent to serve those who are to inherit salvation.
- 16:22SPEAKER_00: In other words, just say, so don't confuse Jesus with the angels.
- 16:25SPEAKER_00: We see that and we go, Ooh, I've got angels here to minister to me, to serve me.
- 16:30SPEAKER_00: He's saying That wasn't his point.
- 16:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, his point wasn't to make it about something that it's not.
- 16:34SPEAKER_00: But here's the case where he says, they miss the promised land.
- 16:38SPEAKER_00: But the promised land was a was a metaphor for something bigger.
- 16:42SPEAKER_00: So don't go, I read this about the promised land.
- 16:45SPEAKER_00: That's the that's the promise.
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: Look at the whole story.
- 16:48SPEAKER_00: Get the whole story.
- 16:49SPEAKER_00: We are famous for taking one verse and trying to make it all of the things.
- 16:54SPEAKER_00: You gotta let scripture interpret scripture.
- 16:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 16:57SPEAKER_02: Is there anything about the people in the wilderness are going back to that time about he's talking about hard hearts?
- 17:05SPEAKER_02: He gets talking into disobedience and some of those things.
- 17:09SPEAKER_02: Is there anything about that time period that sticks out to you as maybe the warning that carries through for us today?
- 17:18SPEAKER_00: Um that's a great question.
- 17:20SPEAKER_00: I I um he has a he has a phrase in here that I'm still working through.
- 17:26SPEAKER_00: Uh verse chapter four, verse two.
- 17:29SPEAKER_00: He says, For indeed the good news came to us just as to them.
- 17:33SPEAKER_00: So he makes a comparison between the opportunity to go into the promised land versus Jesus, the opportunity to go into the promised land.
- 17:39SPEAKER_00: So he's making another comparison.
- 17:41SPEAKER_00: He says, But the message they heard did not benefit them because they were not united by faith with those who listened.
- 17:49SPEAKER_00: So he's so he enters this understanding of belief, unbelief, or faith.
- 17:54SPEAKER_00: So if I was to try and think about is there something different about them, um they didn't have a deeper revelation of and I I think sometimes those folks those folks those folks them will be.
- 18:08SPEAKER_00: They just got out of they they'd got out of this is prior to the 40 years.
- 18:12SPEAKER_00: They got out of Egypt.
- 18:13SPEAKER_00: They had only known captivity.
- 18:15SPEAKER_00: So you've if you've ever spent time with somebody who's come out of a very, you know, many years of their life where they were conditioned to believe something, it's hard to get that person to see something different.
- 18:27SPEAKER_00: It truly takes a change.
- 18:29SPEAKER_00: Probably is gonna take a 40-year change in their life to get to understand something different.
- 18:33SPEAKER_00: So your your heart breaks for that.
- 18:35SPEAKER_00: But that said, many of us are conditioned to think a certain way.
- 18:39SPEAKER_00: Maybe you grew up in a family that was uh was not a believing family, or a family that was typically negative or didn't see or look for promise or believe in themselves or struggle with insecurity.
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: You're blazing a trail for those who come after you.
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: So you you gotta force yourself to have faith and have belief that goes beyond maybe what everything taught you to this place.
- 19:01SPEAKER_00: That that is a quick answer.
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: It's a sermon to to your question.
- 19:07SPEAKER_00: So I we all are human like they were, but I can look at them and understand why they struggle with going into the promised land and why we might struggle to do whatever it is we're looking at in front of us.
- 19:17SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 19:18SPEAKER_02: Especially when it requires complete trust.
- 19:22SPEAKER_02: It's easier to stay in a familiar situation, even one that's not healthy or the best for you.
- 19:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 19:29SPEAKER_02: Because it's it's known and comfortable.
- 19:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 19:31SPEAKER_02: I I just wonder too if there's a if he's if he's talking to an audience who is drifting back, you know, wanting to go back into their thing, it's great at all.
- 19:41SPEAKER_02: I wonder if how that connects too to these people that were like, I know it was bad, but you know, we kind of got used to the bad and and they weren't they weren't stepping into this faith, this trust, this promise of all the things.
- 19:55SPEAKER_02: I wonder if that's what I'm saying.
- 19:56SPEAKER_02: Well, and there's the message, Jeff.
- 19:57SPEAKER_00: I mean, it really is the no, no, no, serious.
- 19:59SPEAKER_00: That's the message.
- 20:00SPEAKER_00: Because the message is if he's if he's trying to tell them, guys, don't don't be like this, right?
- 20:06SPEAKER_00: Like we we were there, they missed the promised land, now you've experienced Christ.
- 20:11SPEAKER_00: Don't don't try to make it about something that it wasn't, right?
- 20:14SPEAKER_00: So, I mean, in a sense, that is the heartbeat behind this message on rest.
- 20:18SPEAKER_00: He doesn't define rest, and you're gonna give me that in a second.
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: But he's saying don't don't abandon the true promise for the lessons we were learning along the way.
- 20:29SPEAKER_00: I don't want to discount Moses and those.
- 20:31SPEAKER_00: He doesn't discount them.
- 20:32SPEAKER_00: He's just saying don't fall into that same trap because he's learning the lessons.
- 20:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 20:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 20:39SPEAKER_00: But but I do think that's at the heart of this, that's the message he's trying to deliver to the first century Jewish person that believes in Jesus.
- 20:46SPEAKER_00: Don't don't go back and try and make this about a promised land or about a day off, a day of boy.
- 20:52SPEAKER_00: Today it's like we all all of a sudden we discovered a Sabbath.
- 20:55SPEAKER_00: Everybody, you gotta take a day off.
- 20:56SPEAKER_00: That's important.
- 20:57SPEAKER_02: Wait, it is a real hot topic.
- 20:59SPEAKER_02: You hear that a lot.
- 21:00SPEAKER_00: As if that's the answer for everybody's problems.
- 21:03SPEAKER_00: And and there is a truth that I don't want to make embarrass anybody or or step on anybody's toes because there's a lot of people out there that they're just making that the end-all be-all.
- 21:12SPEAKER_00: Do you take a day off?
- 21:12SPEAKER_00: You'll have no anxiety.
- 21:14SPEAKER_00: Don't connect anything, don't do all the there's a truth there.
- 21:17SPEAKER_00: But that was a metaphor for the rest.
- 21:21SPEAKER_00: The Sabbath was not made, we man was not made for the Sabbath, Sabbath was made for man.
- 21:27SPEAKER_00: Why?
- 21:28SPEAKER_00: Because God, God didn't need to rest.
- 21:30SPEAKER_00: We need God.
- 21:32SPEAKER_00: So we have we need a day to remind ourselves of why we need God.
- 21:35SPEAKER_00: That's the rest.
- 21:37SPEAKER_00: The rest is our connection to God.
- 21:39SPEAKER_00: It's not a day off.
- 21:41SPEAKER_00: So there's a bigger picture that's there that you need to understand.
- 21:45SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 21:45SPEAKER_02: We we lessen it to a day off from the world or the whatever's going on for me.
- 21:51SPEAKER_02: But the whole point of that was to connect to God.
- 21:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 21:55SPEAKER_00: Deep deeper.
- 21:56SPEAKER_00: There's all beautiful truths there.
- 21:57SPEAKER_00: Just don't make it more than what it should have been.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: Before we jump into rest and and and four, uh I wanted to uh uh mention thirteen because I think this is a call it an exhortation.
- 22:11SPEAKER_02: Uh you must warn each other every day, which sounds a little ominous, but I think there's some real beauty in that, uh, while it is still today, so that none of you will be see will be deceived.
- 22:23SPEAKER_02: So faith is uh is a community thing.
- 22:26SPEAKER_02: It's a community practice, a community situation.
- 22:28SPEAKER_02: Because I know I know it speaks to we always want to mention those those moments of how faith we talk about it in groups and studies and and getting into smaller uh settings so that you can ask the questions you want to ask that you you can't on a Sunday morning, you know, and I I think you see that here even in that communal peace.
- 22:49SPEAKER_02: We know the wilderness was a community situation, not always in the best way.
- 22:54SPEAKER_02: Um, but how how does that does that speak anything to you about being able to be there for each other, even even it's if it's uncomfortable to say, hey, don't forget about this.
- 23:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I I think you have to get read on into verse 14, though.
- 23:09SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 23:09SPEAKER_00: For we have become partners of Christ.
- 23:11SPEAKER_00: So I I think that exhortation is it is an as you're as you go message.
- 23:18SPEAKER_00: So once again to the rest, um, yeah, that's the community aspect that we become partners with Christ.
- 23:24SPEAKER_00: In other words, it wasn't, you know, there's Jesus over there, and okay, we got to figure out to get over there.
- 23:30SPEAKER_00: That it is in the participation of what Jesus did.
- 23:32SPEAKER_00: This is our life, this is the as we're going, um, exhorting one another, walking alongside one another.
- 23:38SPEAKER_00: So what the writer does is he he pulls, just like the community of faith in the Hebrews, and they anchored themselves around the story, he's now anchoring them around Christ.
- 23:46SPEAKER_00: That we are partners with Christ moving forward, so exhort each other, encourage each other.
- 23:50SPEAKER_00: So, yeah, I think you're exactly right.
- 23:52SPEAKER_00: He's just reshaping it in a in a little different way.
- 23:56SPEAKER_02: And we tend to make, especially in the Western world, but faith all about us.
- 24:01SPEAKER_01: Faith is all the individual practice versus the the community of it.
- 24:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 24:08SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 24:09SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 24:10SPEAKER_00: And and go right on into the quote because he requotes Psalm 95.
- 24:14SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 24:15SPEAKER_00: Today, if you hear his heart, do not harden your hearts.
- 24:18SPEAKER_00: Hardening of a heart is something that happens over time.
- 24:21SPEAKER_00: So it's not a you know, instantly, you know, there could be a moment when that's shut off, but um, it's something that happens over a period of time.
- 24:29SPEAKER_00: So I think in that community, that communal effort of being in a Bible study, working through scripture, more than a Sunday morning where you're just listening, um, you have people around you that will encourage you, that will inspire you as we're partners with Christ.
- 24:43SPEAKER_01: I yeah.
- 24:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so you're you're a hundred percent correct.
- 24:49SPEAKER_02: It um that hardening too.
- 24:51SPEAKER_02: It just it made me think immediately of last week about drifting away.
- 24:55SPEAKER_02: Also, not not an immediate one-time thing.
- 24:58SPEAKER_02: So these things, they just happen.
- 25:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they can happen.
- 25:02SPEAKER_02: And he's saying don't let it be.
- 25:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, don't let it happen.
- 25:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 25:06SPEAKER_02: All right, dude.
- 25:07SPEAKER_00: Let's talk about rest.
- 25:08SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 25:09SPEAKER_00: We got it.
- 25:09SPEAKER_00: You ready?
- 25:10SPEAKER_00: You ready to give me the big one?
- 25:11SPEAKER_00: I don't got it.
- 25:11SPEAKER_00: The big uh Greek.
- 25:14SPEAKER_00: I don't have this, so I'm excited about it.
- 25:15SPEAKER_02: Okay, yeah.
- 25:16SPEAKER_02: It's just a little word.
- 25:17SPEAKER_02: Uh little word, little words.
- 25:19SPEAKER_00: I need to hear you say it in the Greek thing.
- 25:20SPEAKER_00: Oh man.
- 25:21SPEAKER_00: Give it to me.
- 25:21SPEAKER_00: This is gonna be a hundred percent correct.
- 25:24SPEAKER_02: Maybe.
- 25:24SPEAKER_02: There's no way.
- 25:25SPEAKER_02: Okay, come on.
- 25:26SPEAKER_02: Okay, all right.
- 25:26SPEAKER_02: See it loud and proud.
- 25:27SPEAKER_02: All right, so he talks a lot about rest here.
- 25:31SPEAKER_02: So he's poking holes in the idea of rest being the promised land wasn't rest because they didn't experience it, and then Joshua did bring him in.
- 25:40SPEAKER_02: They didn't rest then either.
- 25:41SPEAKER_02: But that wasn't great, and then David here is talking about it hundreds of years later, so it must have been something else, and he's like, I'm telling you what it is.
- 25:49SPEAKER_02: Then he goes back to creation.
- 25:50SPEAKER_02: So he's saying rest a lot.
- 25:52SPEAKER_02: I don't, I don't know the exact um number of times, it's a lot.
- 25:56SPEAKER_02: So all the times he uses is it 13?
- 26:00SPEAKER_00: Did you say that earlier?
- 26:01SPEAKER_00: Tapers three and three three and four, it's thirteen times.
- 26:03SPEAKER_02: Okay, yeah.
- 26:03SPEAKER_02: So a lot.
- 26:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, a lot.
- 26:05SPEAKER_02: He uses the word you ready for it?
- 26:07SPEAKER_02: I'm ready.
- 26:08SPEAKER_02: Kata powalsis.
- 26:10SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's great.
- 26:12SPEAKER_02: I have no idea, but it sounds good.
- 26:13SPEAKER_02: I listened to the Catapowalsis?
- 26:15SPEAKER_02: Kata powalsis.
- 26:16SPEAKER_00: It sounds like something from Kentucky.
- 26:18SPEAKER_02: It does.
- 26:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's like a bug or something.
- 26:20SPEAKER_02: Rest, resting place, but check this out.
- 26:22SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 26:22SPEAKER_02: Verse nine, he uses a different word.
- 26:26SPEAKER_02: Uh-oh.
- 26:26SPEAKER_02: And it's the only time this word is used in the New Testament.
- 26:30SPEAKER_02: That's important.
- 26:31SPEAKER_02: Prominence.
- 26:32SPEAKER_02: So there is special rest still waiting for the people of God.
- 26:36SPEAKER_00: So then uh mine says Sabbath rest.
- 26:39SPEAKER_00: Sabbathimos.
- 26:40SPEAKER_00: That's a whole that's one word.
- 26:42SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 26:42SPEAKER_00: So mine translates it Sabbath rest.
- 26:44SPEAKER_00: What is yours translated as special?
- 26:45SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 26:46SPEAKER_02: So that that word truly means just that a Sabbath rest.
- 26:50SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 26:51SPEAKER_02: So when you see him connect it back to creation, because there he says if Joshua had succeeded, his point is like all the rest, this was not the rest because nobody really rested in any of this stuff.
- 27:03SPEAKER_02: Then he takes it back to creation and uses that word here.
- 27:08SPEAKER_02: That the original invitation, the original intent and the invitation that is still ongoing today.
- 27:14SPEAKER_00: So then a Sabbath rest still remains for the people of God.
- 27:18SPEAKER_02: Pretty cool, huh?
- 27:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 27:20SPEAKER_00: So only only so you know I have it highlighted, boxed, and circled.
- 27:24SPEAKER_00: I just didn't know that was a special word.
- 27:26SPEAKER_00: That's why we'll talk about Sunday and I'll take full credit for that.
- 27:29SPEAKER_02: I probably didn't say that either correctly.
- 27:31SPEAKER_02: No, it's good.
- 27:32SPEAKER_02: All the Greek scholars, I apologize.
- 27:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 27:35SPEAKER_02: Um that's a that's a great get, man.
- 27:37SPEAKER_02: So what to you, if that's if that's the invitation, if that's the promise, you know, what is what do we spin our wheels falling short of, or what is what is the the trap for us to to not experience that?
- 27:55SPEAKER_00: Well, what is the trap to not experience that?
- 27:57SPEAKER_00: Is that we misunderstand the word rest.
- 28:00SPEAKER_01: I I think.
- 28:01SPEAKER_00: Rest is not taking a break.
- 28:03SPEAKER_00: You could experience rest while taking a break, but it's not that.
- 28:06SPEAKER_00: Rest is also not the absence of problems.
- 28:09SPEAKER_00: I mean, I'm I'm convinced of that.
- 28:11SPEAKER_00: Like this word, four-letter word that is meant to incorporate sabbatisimo, what'd you say?
- 28:19SPEAKER_00: What was that word?
- 28:20SPEAKER_02: Sabatismos.
- 28:21SPEAKER_00: Okay, sabatismos.
- 28:23SPEAKER_00: Um, sabbat rest.
- 28:24SPEAKER_00: If if that to me, in that sense, speaks to the original connection and the original rest that God intended for humanity to have where we were connected as we were once, as humanity was once.
- 28:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 28:39SPEAKER_00: This is not that.
- 28:40SPEAKER_00: What we're experiencing today in the natural realm is not that.
- 28:44SPEAKER_00: But I think what he's saying is then it it is there and it remains for us.
- 28:49SPEAKER_00: So our connection, our faith, like all of this rest of three and four spiritually gets us to that place.
- 28:56SPEAKER_00: This is where I would, this is where I'd dip back into chapter two and say, but we see Jesus working.
- 29:02SPEAKER_00: God is working and establishing that.
- 29:04SPEAKER_00: So although we can be at rest, I think, in our hearts, peace, this gets back to the word Irene peace, does it doesn't mean the absence of word.
- 29:11SPEAKER_00: It means it means to have your heart set, right?
- 29:15SPEAKER_00: Take that which is broken and put it back as if it was never broken.
- 29:18SPEAKER_00: That's gotta be the picture of that.
- 29:20SPEAKER_00: That's the work I'm doing over the next three days to sort it out.
- 29:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 29:23SPEAKER_02: Eleven I think proves that point too.
- 29:27SPEAKER_02: It's funny because it's an oxymoron almost.
- 29:30SPEAKER_02: Let us do our best.
- 29:31SPEAKER_02: Some some translations would say strive, make every effort.
- 29:35SPEAKER_02: So you almost get this sense like how why should I working to rest more doesn't make sense unless that rest is not what I think it is, maybe at first thought.
- 29:45SPEAKER_02: But um Yeah, it's that and the warnings there, like keep trusting, keep following, don't turn back, don't harden your heart.
- 29:53SPEAKER_02: All those things are gonna prevent us from that rest.
- 29:56SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 29:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think is what he's saying.
- 30:01SPEAKER_00: It's it's gotta be that simple and that hard.
- 30:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 30:04SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 30:05SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's not a that's why I say it's don't fall into the trap of thinking it's any one thing, or that it's that it has to be the reconditioning of our hearts, the salvation of our souls, the the greater picture that we work towards.
- 30:18SPEAKER_00: It's the peace that surpasses all understanding.
- 30:21SPEAKER_00: Um it has to be those things, right?
- 30:24SPEAKER_00: Still living in a broken world while holding the tension of of being restored.
- 30:30SPEAKER_00: It's not heaven.
- 30:31SPEAKER_00: I mean, heaven might be the might be a place that is at peace.
- 30:35SPEAKER_00: So I mean in that sense, but it's the it's bigger than that.
- 30:38SPEAKER_01: It's it's gotta be the whole the whole uh the whole thing.
- 30:44SPEAKER_01: It's interesting that today it's like that today fully, but not yet fully.
- 30:51SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 30:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 30:52SPEAKER_02: Not not complete, I guess.
- 30:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know, of just knowing that there is Jesus has accomplished all of this on our behalf.
- 31:01SPEAKER_02: The writer is so consistent in saying don't trust in any of these things or even any of the people that we tend to elevate beyond Jesus.
- 31:10SPEAKER_02: He's saying rest in what he's done, and I love to then where he gets, and we're gonna end with I believe the greatest invitation, you know, one of in in in all of scripture that we have, because it all leads us to to coming to this understanding of what Jesus has accomplished for us.
- 31:30SPEAKER_02: Even though there's reminders along the way, there's things we need to be aware of, there are practical elements of our faith journey that we need to take care of, but ultimately we cannot do for ourselves what Jesus has done for us.
- 31:46SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 31:46SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 31:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I I um I'm just sitting over here trying to think of um, you know, some not my personal journey, but my journey walking alongside others.
- 31:56SPEAKER_00: I've had many, many experiences of people who respond to some of the craziest challenges of life.
- 32:02SPEAKER_00: And I've had a front row seat of seeing how people have navigated that um and and oftentimes wondered their connection to the faith.
- 32:09SPEAKER_00: And that doesn't mean that somebody who has incredible faith can't just really struggle with something mightily.
- 32:15SPEAKER_00: But I wonder if on a side when we're doing well, if we could ask ourselves the question, what what are the things that would just cause us to struggle with what we see, you know, with rest, whatever the idea of rest is, that eternal restoration of our soul here and now, even while we're still walking through the brokenness.
- 32:37SPEAKER_00: Um, and and maybe that's a good place, because I think some people they become believers in Jesus and they don't ever advance their faith beyond that.
- 32:44SPEAKER_00: Um, and and so therefore then times hit, and then they the first question is, God, why would you do this to me?
- 32:49SPEAKER_00: Because there's not been the informative nature of of God's relationship in life.
- 32:53SPEAKER_00: We're in this world where none of us are getting out of here alive unless you're on the short list of what, two?
- 32:57SPEAKER_00: Enoch and and Elijah, right?
- 33:00SPEAKER_00: Who got out of here?
- 33:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 33:01SPEAKER_00: Um, and maybe God dropped them off somewhere along the way anyway.
- 33:04SPEAKER_00: So I don't know.
- 33:05SPEAKER_00: We just didn't find them.
- 33:06SPEAKER_00: Don't just let that go.
- 33:07SPEAKER_00: But but my point is we are going to experience hardships.
- 33:12SPEAKER_00: So at some point, maybe you take chapter two.
- 33:14SPEAKER_00: I still I see Jesus, and God is working.
- 33:17SPEAKER_00: But but pick the thing that you can't even imagine having to endure.
- 33:20SPEAKER_00: I've been with people who've had to endure those things.
- 33:23SPEAKER_00: And um, and some of the people of the greatest of faith, and man, it's the biggest gut check in their life.
- 33:29SPEAKER_00: And and in many cases, uh, their faith was the last thing that they could hold on to that helped to say in the same.
- 33:34SPEAKER_00: And in some cases, it took them out and from the natural world.
- 33:38SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 33:38SPEAKER_00: So this is that this is that thing.
- 33:40SPEAKER_00: I love you just said it, and I I don't know if you were gonna build on it, but you said the greatest invitation of all time.
- 33:45SPEAKER_00: That's what it is.
- 33:46SPEAKER_00: It really is.
- 33:48SPEAKER_00: The idea to experience uh experience is a terrible word, but the idea to have rest.
- 33:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 33:56SPEAKER_00: Maybe you don't experience it in the way that you expect, but to know that it's there and that you will experience that rest, you're working towards that rest.
- 34:06SPEAKER_00: Christ made the rest available to you, and now we're navigating through it.
- 34:11SPEAKER_00: That's pretty powerful.
- 34:12SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 34:14SPEAKER_02: So he closes his point in this with a therefore or so then from 14 to 16.
- 34:20SPEAKER_02: Uh, how does all this point to Jesus being our high priest?
- 34:24SPEAKER_00: Um He's building, he's building for the next chapter.
- 34:27SPEAKER_00: That's a transition for chapter five.
- 34:29SPEAKER_00: Uh, but you have to be Jewish to understand who the high priest was.
- 34:33SPEAKER_00: So their, and we're gonna do all this next week, their high priest would go in and off in their understanding stood between humanity and God and had to offer a sacrifice to God.
- 34:48SPEAKER_00: So that person now, which in many ways would have been Moses in in one way, but Aaron, remember Aaron, the the the Levitical tribe that eventually came through were the ones that did the actual sacrifices, but Moses was the archetype for that because he would go up on the mountain and talk to God.
- 35:04SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 35:04SPEAKER_00: So Jesus is now being taken that example because we're gonna get into talking about Melchazadech, who's a really odd form of priest from back in the day.
- 35:12SPEAKER_00: And then the priesthood, the challenge that we're gonna deal with is that the priests in the Old Testament weren't sinless.
- 35:20SPEAKER_00: They had sin.
- 35:21SPEAKER_00: Jesus is not.
- 35:22SPEAKER_00: So that's the case we're gonna build, but he's he sets him up as the high priest, as the one now that we're in relationship with him, he's representing us to God.
- 35:33SPEAKER_00: I'll ask you a question, and we can finish with this thought or we can talk for another hour.
- 35:37SPEAKER_00: Let's do that.
- 35:38SPEAKER_00: Verse 16.
- 35:40SPEAKER_00: If you were a first century Jewish person or uh or a Jewish person today, what would you consider this phrase in verse 16?
- 35:47SPEAKER_00: Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and grace to help us in time of need.
- 35:55SPEAKER_02: Well, my first thought would probably be one of hesitancy, perhaps.
- 36:02SPEAKER_02: We've seen how some of that worked out.
- 36:05SPEAKER_02: Even let's talk about the Ark of the Covenant and approaching that throne's glory long ago.
- 36:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, just because it almost fell off, right?
- 36:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 36:13SPEAKER_02: That didn't work out great for everyone.
- 36:15SPEAKER_02: No, so that would be in my mind.
- 36:18SPEAKER_02: Walking into the old throne of grace.
- 36:20SPEAKER_02: I got this, yeah.
- 36:21SPEAKER_02: I got this, yeah.
- 36:22SPEAKER_02: Um, so that would be probably on my thought about uh the glory of God is not easily approached.
- 36:31SPEAKER_00: If you're a Jewish person in the first century, you'd be like, I don't know how to reconcile that, but that's the bigger point that he's making.
- 36:38SPEAKER_00: Boldness isn't cocky, brash, whatever.
- 36:41SPEAKER_00: Boldness is confidence and believing and knowing who you are.
- 36:44SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 36:45SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's it's uh and I and this is not true for everybody's relationship with their dad, but running into a room and diving up into their lap versus if your dad is the CEO of a company and somebody approaching into their office, right?
- 36:56SPEAKER_00: There's a difference of connection that you think about.
- 36:59SPEAKER_00: So the familial connection of climbing into your dad's lap is different than if you had to go in there because you had to present a sacrifice or your job to see if you had done it well.
- 37:10SPEAKER_00: There's a there's a relational break there, and the person says, you can boldly approach the throne of grace because we have a high priest who we are connected to because of the familiar the familial origin, and so we can go receive grace and mercy.
- 37:22SPEAKER_00: That is a beautiful picture of the invitation of Christ in our lives.
- 37:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I use this as a go-to when I led worship a lot.
- 37:30SPEAKER_02: This was always such a a huge invitational verse that I would love to share because when you're coming into a room and you've got a lot of different thoughts on who God is, a lot of different experiences with what quote God has done in in their lives, and understanding that we don't come boldly because of who we are.
- 37:51SPEAKER_02: Because we're awesome, because we deserve it, yeah, because we I earned it.
- 37:55SPEAKER_02: None of that.
- 37:56SPEAKER_02: But the invitation fully is and this is the thing you don't get to do in a worship transition.
- 38:02SPEAKER_02: You don't get to teach the first four chapters and then share this last close right there.
- 38:06SPEAKER_02: That's right.
- 38:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 38:06SPEAKER_02: So you you have you know, there's there's some things.
- 38:08SPEAKER_02: I'm like I'm like the writer.
- 38:10SPEAKER_02: I'm pulling I'm pulling right here, Psalm 95.
- 38:13SPEAKER_02: You're like, I got 30 seconds to make a major point.
- 38:16SPEAKER_02: There's something in 2 Chronicles.
- 38:17SPEAKER_02: Let's pull that.
- 38:18SPEAKER_02: Um you're pulling a little bit of that.
- 38:20SPEAKER_00: If you're Kyle, you're quoting theologians.
- 38:23SPEAKER_02: I do love me a good spurgeon.
- 38:25SPEAKER_02: You know that.
- 38:26SPEAKER_02: Um but but it it's just such a it's such a groundbreaking idea to come into this because uh, you know, if if anybody's like me, I I don't always have the greatest week when I come in to try to set my heart and and fix my eyes and just worship.
- 38:43SPEAKER_02: And knowing that God who knows you completely, not because you don't have sin, but because of what Jesus done and because of him, the way he's paved, and his intercession as high priest, this is the invitation.
- 38:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 38:58SPEAKER_02: Boldly, um, fully, and completely.
- 39:02SPEAKER_00: And for me, it would have been the difference, back to your point of he doesn't want them to drift back.
- 39:08SPEAKER_00: It would have been the difference between a Jewish person who believed in Jesus, being connected to Jesus, and a Jewish person who was trying to be reconciled through the blood sacrifice of an animal, right?
- 39:17SPEAKER_00: So it's being reconciled or working towards being reconciled to be able to approach God's throne knowing that you're standing in the righteousness of Christ, not in your own, or whatever the sacrificial system would have would have equaled.
- 39:31SPEAKER_00: So, man, I I think it's a great invitation.
- 39:35SPEAKER_02: May just be what we end with on Sunday.
- 39:37SPEAKER_02: Maybe.
- 39:37SPEAKER_02: You guys will have to come and see for yourself then.
- 39:40SPEAKER_02: So it's good.
- 39:41SPEAKER_02: How's it going so far?
- 39:42SPEAKER_02: Are you glad we're tackling this?
- 39:44SPEAKER_02: To the end of chapter four.
- 39:46SPEAKER_00: Chapter six, I did say so far.
- 39:48SPEAKER_00: And Melchizedek, that whole understanding is going to be literally Greek and Hebrew to us.
- 39:53SPEAKER_00: Dude, what a mysterious character in the world.
- 39:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 39:58SPEAKER_00: Where did he come from?
- 39:59SPEAKER_00: He would have been mysterious to them 2,000 years ago.
- 40:03SPEAKER_00: And was mysterious to Abraham.
- 40:05SPEAKER_00: I can't wait to have that conversation next week.
- 40:07SPEAKER_00: I have so many questions.
- 40:09SPEAKER_00: Good.
- 40:09SPEAKER_00: I'm not gonna have a single answer.
- 40:11SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna say, you know what?
- 40:14SPEAKER_00: Chapter 5.
- 40:16SPEAKER_02: Next.
- 40:18SPEAKER_02: Alright, guys.
- 40:18SPEAKER_02: Well, thanks for tuning in and joining us.
- 40:21SPEAKER_02: Hope uh this did something for you.
- 40:24SPEAKER_02: I don't know what it was.
- 40:25SPEAKER_02: It was great.
- 40:25SPEAKER_00: It was a great study.
- 40:26SPEAKER_00: Love you guys, man.
- 40:27SPEAKER_00: This is amazing.
- 40:28SPEAKER_02: Yep, can't wait to see uh working together Sunday.
- 40:31SPEAKER_02: Uh Hebrews 3:4.
- 40:33SPEAKER_02: See ya.
