- 0:10Speaker 1: Here's our resident, Jim. Not in a hoodie today, by
- 0:13Speaker 1: the way, not in a hoodie. He must have a
- 0:15Speaker 1: big banquet to go into today because he is in
- 0:17Speaker 1: a sport code and a snazzy shirt. This is Jim
- 0:20Speaker 1: Bowden Front Office, unfiltered.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Welcome Jim.
- 0:22Speaker 3: What do you got for us today?
- 0:23Speaker 4: Buddy?
- 0:24Speaker 2: Hey, j Eric? How are you guys? This is the
- 0:26Speaker 2: great time of year. It's like a holiday, right. I
- 0:28Speaker 2: love the trade deadline. I love when we come within
- 0:32Speaker 2: two weeks of all the action that's going to take place.
- 0:35Speaker 2: And I love how the emotional swings occur in all
- 0:38Speaker 2: the front offices as they get to the final couple
- 0:40Speaker 2: of weeks. It's always a fun time.
- 0:43Speaker 4: What do you got, Jim?
- 0:44Speaker 1: I saw you posted five trades?
- 0:45Speaker 4: What is it?
- 0:46Speaker 1: Five moves you'd like to see before the MLB trade deadline?
- 0:49Speaker 1: I mean, let's jump right into it. Here you went
- 0:51Speaker 1: Mariners and Giants matching up, and Hunter Goodman was on
- 0:54Speaker 1: this list. But first we're gonna start with trade idea
- 0:56Speaker 1: number one, which is Casey Schmidt and Eric Miller for
- 1:00Speaker 1: George Kirby.
- 1:01Speaker 4: Why does this make sense?
- 1:03Speaker 2: Yeah? So this is always a fun time of year,
- 1:05Speaker 2: and I love engaging with the fans, the viewers, the
- 1:08Speaker 2: listeners talking about trade possibility. So it all started when
- 1:12Speaker 2: I had a conversation with Jerry Depoto, the president of
- 1:15Speaker 2: the Seattle Mariners, and I asked him, Okay, what are
- 1:17Speaker 2: you trying to do between now and the deadline? What
- 1:19Speaker 2: do you guys need to do? And he was pretty clear,
- 1:22Speaker 2: I need a right hand hitter with power because we
- 1:25Speaker 2: just struggle against left hand pitching and I'd like to
- 1:27Speaker 2: get another high leverage reliever that I can throw in
- 1:30Speaker 2: that six or seventh inning. So it's a really hard
- 1:33Speaker 2: thing to acquire. Right There's not a lot of right
- 1:35Speaker 2: hand hitting bats out there that are available, and so
- 1:40Speaker 2: I kind of looked at the Giants. Casey Schmidt, twenty
- 1:42Speaker 2: seven years old having a breakout year. He's got nineteen
- 1:45Speaker 2: home runs, going to end up with twenty five thirty
- 1:47Speaker 2: before it's all all said and done. He also has
- 1:50Speaker 2: positional flexibility right can play first, second, third, corner outfield
- 1:53Speaker 2: at the age wherever you want to put him. That
- 1:55Speaker 2: kind of fits what he was looking for. And then
- 1:58Speaker 2: number two, Eric Miller, who has not giving up a
- 2:00Speaker 2: run in his last nine appearances and he doesn't walk anybody.
- 2:04Speaker 2: He hasn't walked anyone his last five appearances, and he
- 2:06Speaker 2: punches everybody out. He punches out two out of the
- 2:08Speaker 2: three guys that he faces. He's just locked in right now.
- 2:11Speaker 2: So there's your right hand bat, and there is your
- 2:14Speaker 2: you know, extra reliever that you're looking for. And so
- 2:16Speaker 2: then you know, when I'm looking at it from the
- 2:18Speaker 2: Giants perspective, how does that work? Well, look, it's a
- 2:22Speaker 2: seller's market. You're gonna have to overpay you want to win,
- 2:24Speaker 2: You're gonna have to make a bad trade to win.
- 2:26Speaker 2: So I took one of their starters, George Kirby, and said, okay,
- 2:31Speaker 2: what about that. If I'm San Francisco and I can
- 2:33Speaker 2: get Kirby for Schmidt and Miller, I'm doing it, no
- 2:35Speaker 2: doubt in my mind. Put him behind Logan Webb. I'm
- 2:37Speaker 2: gonna trade Robbie Ray anyway. So I'm gonna need starting pitching.
- 2:40Speaker 2: I get a young, controllable starter, I can afford to
- 2:42Speaker 2: give him the long term deal that Seattle hasn't, and
- 2:45Speaker 2: so I kind of felt like that's a deal that
- 2:48Speaker 2: might work for both sides. Giants win the deal, but
- 2:51Speaker 2: the Mariners get the two pieces they want and perhaps
- 2:54Speaker 2: if they're the two pieces that Jerry thinks can get
- 2:56Speaker 2: into the World Series, then making a bad shade like this,
- 3:00Speaker 2: they already have five starters without Kirby, and they've got
- 3:03Speaker 2: Kate Anderson coming, who has a chance to be a
- 3:06Speaker 2: solid number two starter in the bai leagues. And by
- 3:08Speaker 2: the way, he's major league ready. All the scouts that
- 3:10Speaker 2: I've talked to says he's ready, and Jerry acknowledges he's
- 3:13Speaker 2: ready as well. So at the end of the day,
- 3:15Speaker 2: really you could add Kate Anderson, Casey Schmidt and Eric
- 3:18Speaker 2: Miller for Kirby. Seems to make sense to.
- 3:20Speaker 3: Me, all right, You actually, before we get to the
- 3:23Speaker 3: next trade, you had talked about how trading a big
- 3:26Speaker 3: leaguer for a bunch of prospects kind of works, And like,
- 3:29Speaker 3: where's the who has the toughest job on a trade
- 3:33Speaker 3: like this? Who has the tougher job the team giving
- 3:36Speaker 3: up the control, not winning, but gaining a player who's like, well,
- 3:42Speaker 3: I've been in a playoff race for a long time.
- 3:45Speaker 3: I guess I can help you in years ahead, but
- 3:47Speaker 3: I'm kind of pissed I'm getting traded to a bad team.
- 3:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, look at these these kind of deals,
- 3:54Speaker 2: you got to balance them, right. I Mean, you know,
- 3:56Speaker 2: we're so used to the buyers seller type of deals,
- 3:59Speaker 2: but you know those days are kind of behind us, right,
- 4:02Speaker 2: So a lot of times when you're buying, you're also selling,
- 4:05Speaker 2: right because we're we've got one eye on this year,
- 4:07Speaker 2: we've got the other eyes on the future. And then
- 4:10Speaker 2: you've got to figure out what's best for your organization.
- 4:12Speaker 2: You know. For example, for the Giants, if they were
- 4:15Speaker 2: to trade Schmitt and Miller, are they better off getting
- 4:17Speaker 2: three of the Mariners prospects or are they better off
- 4:20Speaker 2: getting a young, control, controllable, proven starter, right, And that's
- 4:24Speaker 2: that's what you got to measure. I mean, prospects are
- 4:27Speaker 2: suspects until they become productive at the big league level anyway.
- 4:31Speaker 2: And so in a case like Kirby being young enough,
- 4:34Speaker 2: I think even rebuilding in San Francisco, which they don't
- 4:37Speaker 2: even like that word, I think it makes more sense
- 4:40Speaker 2: to try to get a Kirby than I do the prospects.
- 4:42Speaker 2: And if I'm Seattle, I would much rather trade the
- 4:44Speaker 2: prospects and keep Kirby if that.
- 4:46Speaker 3: Is yeah, yeah, no, that's perfect. And I don't think
- 4:50Speaker 3: Buster ever wants to rebuild. I think that's just out
- 4:53Speaker 3: of X players' mindsets, but it could be wrong.
- 4:59Speaker 5: If you're watching us, you already know we're wearing mack
- 5:01Speaker 5: Weldon right now as we talk about a great brand
- 5:04Speaker 5: that makes things so comfortable and easy to wear. But
- 5:07Speaker 5: if you're listening to the show, let me tell you
- 5:09Speaker 5: a little bit more about mac Weldon with my friend
- 5:12Speaker 5: Aer Kratz.
- 5:13Speaker 3: Yeah, it's comfortable, it's light. It's summertime right now. For me, though,
- 5:19Speaker 3: they cater to what I need tall clothes. Normally, when
- 5:22Speaker 3: I buy tall clothes it's like something that's cumbersome and boxy.
- 5:27Speaker 3: It still fits incredibly well, super light, perfect for the summertime.
- 5:33Speaker 4: They got me all covered.
- 5:34Speaker 5: Comfortable performance material can be yours. Mac Weldon is the spot.
- 5:41Speaker 5: Don't sweat the heat this summer. Feel as effortlessly cool
- 5:44Speaker 5: as you look. With mac Weldon. Go to macweldon dot
- 5:47Speaker 5: com and get twenty percent off your first order of
- 5:49Speaker 5: one hundred and twenty five bucks or more with promo
- 5:50Speaker 5: code foul that's m ackw e L d o N
- 5:53Speaker 5: dot com code f o u.
- 5:55Speaker 4: L your second mock trade.
- 5:58Speaker 3: I'm gonna go with the fact that trading a catcher,
- 6:01Speaker 3: let alone a possible fifty to fifty five home run catcher,
- 6:06Speaker 3: would be crazy. Talk us through the Hunter Goodman to
- 6:11Speaker 3: the Red Sox mock trade.
- 6:13Speaker 2: Yeah, so I'm going to age myself. But here we go.
- 6:15Speaker 2: So I started. I went right from college into the
- 6:19Speaker 2: big league's front offices and spent my life there.
- 6:21Speaker 4: Right.
- 6:22Speaker 2: And so the first team that I worked for was
- 6:24Speaker 2: the Pittsburgh Pirates, and we were one of the worst
- 6:26Speaker 2: teams in baseball. We're losing one hundred games a year.
- 6:28Speaker 2: But we had one really good player and his name
- 6:30Speaker 2: was Tony Pana. He was an All Star catcher. He
- 6:33Speaker 2: was in his prime, he was in his late twenties.
- 6:36Speaker 2: He had been to four All Star Games. And we
- 6:39Speaker 2: traded Tony Painya and I sat there and I just
- 6:42Speaker 2: hated it, and I didn't understand it. How can you
- 6:45Speaker 2: trade a catcher that's also our best hitter. He's got
- 6:49Speaker 2: an unbelievable arm, he handles the pitching staff well, he's
- 6:53Speaker 2: high energy. He's the face of the franchise. In fact,
- 6:55Speaker 2: he's the face of our media guide in yearbook that year.
- 6:59Speaker 2: How do you do that? Well? The response back was, well,
- 7:02Speaker 2: we get a gold glove center fielder and Andy Van slike,
- 7:05Speaker 2: we get a catcher that can shut down the running
- 7:07Speaker 2: game and Mike Levall you're behind them. And oh, by
- 7:10Speaker 2: the way, we get a number two starter and Mike Dunn.
- 7:13Speaker 2: And so what happened is that trade, along with a
- 7:16Speaker 2: couple other trades that were made, you know, including a
- 7:20Speaker 2: deal for Kyle Dravick and Jose Deally on for Bi Bonilla.
- 7:24Speaker 2: There were three trades that totally transformed that franchise and
- 7:28Speaker 2: made it contenders, right, And so all of a sudden
- 7:31Speaker 2: we're in the playoffs now because of those deals. And
- 7:33Speaker 2: those deals are really painful. How in the world you
- 7:37Speaker 2: trade a catcher that's got thirty home runs, that's your
- 7:40Speaker 2: only all star of the last two year. How do
- 7:42Speaker 2: you do it? Well, you only do it if the
- 7:45Speaker 2: load coming back changes your future, because that's the only
- 7:49Speaker 2: way you're going to get better. You're not going to
- 7:51Speaker 2: do it just with the draft. You're not going to
- 7:52Speaker 2: do it with international signings. You got to take your
- 7:54Speaker 2: best asset and turn into four players or three players.
- 7:57Speaker 2: What are the cases? So in this proposed deal or idea,
- 8:01Speaker 2: just to throw at people, you get two starting pitchers
- 8:04Speaker 2: for your rotation. You get a middle indfielder and then
- 8:07Speaker 2: a catcher to replace Goodman who can at least start
- 8:10Speaker 2: for you in the big leagues after the trade is made,
- 8:12Speaker 2: and so you know, it's more about the concept than
- 8:15Speaker 2: it is trading the catcher. But the Tony Payne you deal,
- 8:19Speaker 2: I'll never forget it. I'll never forget how we took
- 8:22Speaker 2: a one hundred lost team like the Rockies in Pittsburgh
- 8:25Speaker 2: and tournament at contenders and it was deals like this,
- 8:29Speaker 2: and they're painful at the time, and the fans don't
- 8:31Speaker 2: understand it, and the front offices get the death threats.
- 8:34Speaker 2: But the one thing that I learned over the years,
- 8:36Speaker 2: at the end of the day, the fans want to win.
- 8:38Speaker 2: That's what they're going to care about the end of
- 8:40Speaker 2: the day. And if your deals get you into the playoffs,
- 8:43Speaker 2: then they're gonna look back and say, yeah, we did
- 8:45Speaker 2: the right thing.
- 8:48Speaker 1: Jim, I just if I'm the Rockies, I mean, he's
- 8:50Speaker 1: under control for four more years, I just don't understand.
- 8:53Speaker 1: I mean, I get it, I do get it. I
- 8:55Speaker 1: can understand if he was a year or two away
- 8:56Speaker 1: from free agency, but he's got four more years and
- 8:59Speaker 1: the Rockies don't have anybody other any good on their
- 9:01Speaker 1: I mean, they don't have any I understand. I get
- 9:04Speaker 1: what you're gonna say, Like, when you're.
- 9:06Speaker 2: A year or two away, you're not going to get
- 9:08Speaker 2: this load. You can't get this trade when you're a
- 9:10Speaker 2: year or two away. You got to do it. When
- 9:12Speaker 2: you're four years away. That's that's when you have to
- 9:14Speaker 2: do it to get the return to make it worthwhile. Anyway,
- 9:18Speaker 2: I get both.
- 9:19Speaker 1: I agree, I I know, I understand what you're saying.
- 9:21Speaker 1: It's just if frockies have one asset and they better.
- 9:25Speaker 4: Get a lot for it. Yeah, exactly.
- 9:29Speaker 1: So yeah, let's go to number three, all right, And
- 9:32Speaker 1: this one I understand even less. From the Padres side,
- 9:37Speaker 1: it's Freddy Perolta to the Padres for Cash Mayfield. I
- 9:40Speaker 1: don't know if Cash Mayfield is any good. I don't
- 9:41Speaker 1: know who he is.
- 9:42Speaker 3: Never heard of them. I'm not gonna lie.
- 9:44Speaker 1: But the Padres aren't.
- 9:45Speaker 4: They're not.
- 9:46Speaker 2: They're not a good team, Jim there.
- 9:47Speaker 1: They can't hit, right, But so why would they make
- 9:50Speaker 1: a move for someone like Freddy Perolta when they after
- 9:52Speaker 1: the season and they can't get them a qualifying offer.
- 9:55Speaker 1: They can't get a draft pick, and they're probably not
- 9:56Speaker 1: going to resign them.
- 9:58Speaker 2: Yeah, so you have to look at it this way, right,
- 10:00Speaker 2: if you're going to go for it, right, if you're
- 10:04Speaker 2: two games out in the wild card, if you think
- 10:06Speaker 2: you got a chance to get a wild card and
- 10:08Speaker 2: get in the playoffs, and that's what you want to
- 10:09Speaker 2: do because you have new owners coming in here and
- 10:12Speaker 2: you don't want to be sellers on August third. If
- 10:15Speaker 2: you want to go for it, you can't make a
- 10:17Speaker 2: big trade. You can't sit there and trade Ethan Sallas
- 10:20Speaker 2: the catcher. You can't sit there and trade your best prospect.
- 10:23Speaker 2: You just can't. And if you want to take a
- 10:25Speaker 2: shot without giving up too much, Freddy Peralta might be
- 10:29Speaker 2: a guy. If your pitching room thinks that they can
- 10:33Speaker 2: make Peralta closer to what he was a year ago
- 10:35Speaker 2: with Milwaukee, get him out of New York, get him
- 10:37Speaker 2: out of the pressure, get him in San Diego, and
- 10:39Speaker 2: if you think you're pitching people can get him back
- 10:41Speaker 2: to where he was, take a chance on the rental.
- 10:44Speaker 2: The price is cash Mayfield, who is a third or
- 10:47Speaker 2: fourth starter at best. He's two or three years away.
- 10:50Speaker 2: But if he makes it, it's probably a back of
- 10:52Speaker 2: the rotation starter, right, At least that's the view then
- 10:56Speaker 2: I'm getting from a lot of scouts that have been
- 10:57Speaker 2: watching him closely this year. So what I give up
- 11:00Speaker 2: a future third or fourth starter to take a shot
- 11:03Speaker 2: on Parolta if I'm going for it, Yeah, probably because
- 11:06Speaker 2: you're not gonna be able to trade for school Joe
- 11:07Speaker 2: Ryan's not available. You know, you know I would do
- 11:11Speaker 2: the same thing for, say, Kevin Gosman, right if you
- 11:15Speaker 2: you know, if you can get Gosman. But I don't
- 11:16Speaker 2: think you get Gosman for Mayfield. I don't think you
- 11:19Speaker 2: get Clay Holmes for Mayfield. But you may get Peralta.
- 11:21Speaker 2: And I think if you're going for it, that's the
- 11:23Speaker 2: kind of deal you make. Now, if I were them,
- 11:26Speaker 2: I would shop Mason Miller and I would see what
- 11:29Speaker 2: I could get. I don't want a one for one trade,
- 11:31Speaker 2: like I don't want to reverse the debris trade and
- 11:34Speaker 2: go to the White Sox and get one of their
- 11:35Speaker 2: shortstop prospects. I want four guys back, right, I want
- 11:39Speaker 2: the Garrett Crochet deal. If I'm San Diego, and if
- 11:43Speaker 2: the Yankees are or the White Sox are willing to
- 11:45Speaker 2: give me the crochet deal. Then that's the direction I
- 11:50Speaker 2: would go if I'm the Padres. Padres are not a
- 11:53Speaker 2: good team, but there's a lot of teams that aren't
- 11:55Speaker 2: good teams in the National League that all within a
- 11:57Speaker 2: couple games of each other. You can get You can
- 12:00Speaker 2: get a wild card spot in either league with bad
- 12:02Speaker 2: teams this year. That's just a fact. So that was
- 12:04Speaker 2: the thinking behind it.
- 12:07Speaker 3: Let's not even debate if they're a good team, playoff team,
- 12:09Speaker 3: whatever they are. Aj Preller may not be at this
- 12:13Speaker 3: job because the new ownership has it. We haven't heard
- 12:16Speaker 3: anything from him. It's not like the new ownership's like,
- 12:19Speaker 3: oh I love aj Preller, I gotta have him. Wouldn't
- 12:22Speaker 3: this be the time for aj Preller to continue to
- 12:24Speaker 3: do aj Preller things and trade and Ethan Sallas to
- 12:28Speaker 3: take his one last shot with this team that he built,
- 12:31Speaker 3: because if he doesn't put a winning team out in
- 12:33Speaker 3: the field for the last sixty two games of the year,
- 12:36Speaker 3: this ownership definitely won't be like we watched these last
- 12:39Speaker 3: few games.
- 12:40Speaker 4: Do we really like you?
- 12:42Speaker 2: Yeah? I can't trade any more of these top prospects.
- 12:45Speaker 2: Here is so much different than it was, and you've
- 12:50Speaker 2: got a problem you've got albatross contracts that aren't going
- 12:53Speaker 2: to end well. I mean, Xander Bogertz already is an
- 12:55Speaker 2: agent decline. You're not going to be able to move
- 12:57Speaker 2: the contract unless you can attach to a Mason Miller trade.
- 13:01Speaker 2: And you know, tell the Yankees, hey, you can add
- 13:03Speaker 2: Miller for these three prospects, but you got to take Bogart's,
- 13:07Speaker 2: you know, unless you can pull that off. I just
- 13:09Speaker 2: don't think anyone's going to be willing to do that.
- 13:12Speaker 2: I just wouldn't give up any more. I don't. I
- 13:14Speaker 2: think the cupboard's already there, and the few assets that
- 13:16Speaker 2: you have left there, I would personally be very careful. Again,
- 13:20Speaker 2: the right play for them isn't to go for it
- 13:23Speaker 2: this year. The right play is to do the absolute opposite,
- 13:26Speaker 2: which is listen on Mason Miller, listen on Michael King,
- 13:30Speaker 2: and be very open to trying to see if you
- 13:33Speaker 2: can't get six or seven players back and quickly try
- 13:36Speaker 2: to reboot this thing. In my opinion, that's kind of
- 13:39Speaker 2: how I view it. But I wouldn't. I wouldn't do
- 13:41Speaker 2: another Ethan Salas here. I just it's too painful watching
- 13:45Speaker 2: James Wood and CJ. Abrams rake every single night to
- 13:48Speaker 2: sit there and trade your next guy.

- 14:48Speaker 3: All right, Let's go to the Cubs, a team that's
- 14:50Speaker 3: researched and then gone back and then researched, and now
- 14:54Speaker 3: they're surging again, and I think they're a pretty good team.
- 14:57Speaker 3: You have Michael Waka going to the Cubs or Matt
- 15:00Speaker 3: Shaw and Kevin Acontra.
- 15:02Speaker 4: Do the Royals with how loyal.
- 15:04Speaker 3: They are as an organization, how loyal they've spoken about
- 15:07Speaker 3: people part with a Michael Waka And is this enough
- 15:11Speaker 3: of a move in the needle for them to say, yes,
- 15:15Speaker 3: this is what will help push the Royals to where
- 15:18Speaker 3: we want to go.
- 15:19Speaker 2: This was my favorite trade idea of the five. This
- 15:24Speaker 2: is the one deal that I looked at and I said,
- 15:26Speaker 2: you know what, I would do it on both sides.
- 15:29Speaker 2: This was the only one that I sat there and said, yeah,
- 15:32Speaker 2: I can see this happening, and it makes a lot
- 15:33Speaker 2: of sense for both sides. Kansas City should be selling.
- 15:37Speaker 2: They got no chance. Michael Waker is thirty five years old.
- 15:42Speaker 2: And as much as I love Michael Waker, he was
- 15:44Speaker 2: an All Star this year. And he wasn't an All
- 15:45Speaker 2: Star because he was representing the Royals. He was an
- 15:48Speaker 2: All Star because Bobbywick Junior was representing the Royals, so
- 15:50Speaker 2: he made the All Star team because people thought he
- 15:53Speaker 2: deserved to be on that team. He's still got that
- 15:56Speaker 2: great change up, He's still got that special downward plane
- 16:00Speaker 2: when you're ready to win. Michael Walker is not going
- 16:02Speaker 2: to be a Kansas City Royal and his trade value
- 16:05Speaker 2: will never be higher than it is today. That's number one.
- 16:09Speaker 2: Number two. You know, you got to figure out a
- 16:11Speaker 2: way to keep improving this offense and build around Carter
- 16:14Speaker 2: Jensen and Jack Caglion. So I like Matt Shaw better
- 16:18Speaker 2: than the Cubs do. I think he's your answer at
- 16:20Speaker 2: second base. So you put him at second base, wit
- 16:23Speaker 2: it Short at mikel Garcia at third, Pascaino or Kagalion
- 16:26Speaker 2: at first, wherever you're going to go long term, that's
- 16:28Speaker 2: a pretty good infield. I think Matt Shaw is going
- 16:30Speaker 2: to hit. I think he's got power. He'd be a
- 16:32Speaker 2: good acquisition and Kevin on Contra for whatever reason. I
- 16:35Speaker 2: know his swing is a little bit long at times,
- 16:37Speaker 2: but the Cubs never want to give him a runway
- 16:39Speaker 2: at the big league level. I don't know what else
- 16:40Speaker 2: he has to do to get the runway. But Kansas
- 16:43Speaker 2: City can put him in left field, and say, okay,
- 16:44Speaker 2: you're our guy. And I just feel like, if you're
- 16:47Speaker 2: Kansas City, you can get two everyday players that are
- 16:50Speaker 2: non arbitration eligible, two guys that can start for you
- 16:53Speaker 2: in the lineup for a thirty five year old pitcher
- 16:55Speaker 2: that's not going to be there when you're ready to win,
- 16:57Speaker 2: It makes a lot of sense. And on the other side,
- 16:59Speaker 2: for the Chicago Cubs, you already made your decision. You
- 17:02Speaker 2: extended Nico Horner, you signed Alex Bregman. That says goodbye
- 17:05Speaker 2: to Matt Shaw unless you want to use him as
- 17:07Speaker 2: a utility guy. And that's kind of a waste of
- 17:09Speaker 2: Matt Shaw. Kevin Alcantra, you never wanted to give him
- 17:12Speaker 2: a pathway now I know it. Suzuki and Half are free agents,
- 17:14Speaker 2: so perhaps the plan is for next year. But you
- 17:17Speaker 2: got a chance to win right now. You got a
- 17:19Speaker 2: chance to win, you know, get a wild card and
- 17:21Speaker 2: do some damage in the postseason. And you got a
- 17:23Speaker 2: thirty five year old pitcher on an affordable contract eighteen
- 17:27Speaker 2: million this year, but fourteen million each of the next
- 17:30Speaker 2: two years with that team option. To me, that makes
- 17:33Speaker 2: a lot of sense for the Cubs as well. So
- 17:35Speaker 2: that was actually one of my favorite deals of the vibe.
- 17:38Speaker 1: It actually makes a lot of sense, Jim, Cubs, he
- 17:40Speaker 1: started pitching, and you're doing everybody. It seems like a
- 17:42Speaker 1: solid right. You're sending Michael Walker to a team that's
- 17:44Speaker 1: trying to win. You send Matt Shaw. You get him
- 17:46Speaker 1: out of kind of utility purgatory for a guy who's
- 17:49Speaker 1: a first round pick, thought he was going to play
- 17:51Speaker 1: a long time for the Cubs, and then contry. You
- 17:52Speaker 1: give a chance to play every day. This is one
- 17:54Speaker 1: of those deals that makes too much sense, so that
- 17:56Speaker 1: means it won't happen.
- 17:57Speaker 4: Jim. That's that's right.
- 17:58Speaker 1: Exactly what I've learned over the years is that this
- 18:00Speaker 1: makes too much sense, so it will never happen. All right,
- 18:04Speaker 1: Let's go to your last one, number five. You have
- 18:06Speaker 1: the Rangers acquiring Luis Arise, who I love for Dalton
- 18:11Speaker 1: Pence and Ulfron cas Steele. I don't know who they are.
- 18:14Speaker 1: You know more about them than I do, so please
- 18:16Speaker 1: explain why the Rangers and why the Giants would make
- 18:19Speaker 1: this deal.
- 18:20Speaker 2: Well, the Giants make this deal, and they win this
- 18:22Speaker 2: deal long term to get jo fran Castillo, who by
- 18:25Speaker 2: the way, is a teenager and he's got a long
- 18:27Speaker 2: way to go. I get it. But he's got he's got,
- 18:29Speaker 2: He's a high end prospect. I love him. It would
- 18:32Speaker 2: be a huge price. I think Dalton Pence is more
- 18:35Speaker 2: of a bullpen really restarting right now, but probably ends
- 18:37Speaker 2: up in the bullpen at some point. Uh But to
- 18:40Speaker 2: be able to get that kind of return for a
- 18:42Speaker 2: rental of Lewis Arise, uh Is, would be a really
- 18:46Speaker 2: nice return for San Francisco, you know. And I think
- 18:49Speaker 2: the Giants, you know, obviously need need the expiring contracts,
- 18:53Speaker 2: either extend or trade. I've always been a big believer
- 18:55Speaker 2: in that. Don't just let them walk for nothing. Texas
- 18:58Speaker 2: could use another battle. They are starting to swing the
- 19:01Speaker 2: bat much better because they're finally getting healthy. Nice to
- 19:03Speaker 2: see Wya at Langford back raking. Now they need Corey
- 19:05Speaker 2: Seeger back. But just to create more traffic, you know,
- 19:09Speaker 2: instead of all those Jock Peterson leadoff homers, maybe you
- 19:12Speaker 2: put a Rise at the top of lineup, let him
- 19:13Speaker 2: hit a single, and then let Peterson's solo homer become
- 19:16Speaker 2: a two run homer. So it kind of made sense
- 19:19Speaker 2: for me. Arise has really improved defensively this year. He's
- 19:21Speaker 2: done a great job working with Ron Washington. I've actually
- 19:24Speaker 2: been amazed at how improved he is, so I think
- 19:27Speaker 2: that would be a really good fit for him. I
- 19:29Speaker 2: also think the Red Sox would be a really good
- 19:31Speaker 2: fit at second base in Boston because I think, you know,
- 19:35Speaker 2: with his bat control and back to ball skills, I
- 19:38Speaker 2: think he'd be able to pepper that Green monster and
- 19:40Speaker 2: left field. So I really like the fit in Boston
- 19:43Speaker 2: as well. But for this exercise, I sent him to
- 19:45Speaker 2: the Texas Rangers.
- 19:47Speaker 4: A team that lost again last night.
- 19:50Speaker 3: And you watched Kevin Gosman walk off the mount and
- 19:52Speaker 3: I don't know if you saw his comments, but it
- 19:54Speaker 3: sounded like possibly his last time pitching for the Jays
- 19:58Speaker 3: after a long run. Which directions you see the Jay's going? Obviously,
- 20:03Speaker 3: I think we can agree they're gonna be sellers. But
- 20:06Speaker 3: is this direction going to be the direction that, like, hey,
- 20:10Speaker 3: you know what, we're winning again next year and we're
- 20:13Speaker 3: going to add so that we are in that place,
- 20:15Speaker 3: or is it just expiring contracts and see you later.
- 20:19Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, we're going to reset for next year for sure. Yeah,
- 20:23Speaker 2: and we have money, by the way, So I mean
- 20:25Speaker 2: Kevin Gosman, Shane Bieber, Dalton var Show. They got to
- 20:28Speaker 2: go between now and August third, all right, the expiring
- 20:31Speaker 2: contracts got to go. And this's gonna be enough teams
- 20:33Speaker 2: on Gosman, right, I mean Chicago White Sox. I love
- 20:36Speaker 2: Gosman with a White Sox. I think it'd be a
- 20:38Speaker 2: really good fit for him. Gosmanould be a good fit
- 20:40Speaker 2: in a Lant. I'd be a good fit in Saint Louis.
- 20:42Speaker 2: It's a lot of different places we can put Gosman.
- 20:44Speaker 2: I would take a chance on Shane Bieber if I
- 20:47Speaker 2: can be convinced that the medicals are fine, I think
- 20:49Speaker 2: he can be okay. You know, I saw him with
- 20:51Speaker 2: a really good start last week and I was like, oh, okay,
- 20:53Speaker 2: all right, And so you know, all these contending teams
- 20:57Speaker 2: need starting pitching, and Gosman and Bieber, if healthy, we
- 20:59Speaker 2: all know can at least pitch Game three, maybe even
- 21:02Speaker 2: better than that. And then Dalton varshow, I love the
- 21:06Speaker 2: fit in Pittsburgh, let's go. I mean, Ben Cherrington, there's
- 21:09Speaker 2: your spot, dude. I mean that that team needs to
- 21:11Speaker 2: improve the defense in center field. O'Neil Cruz can't play
- 21:14Speaker 2: center field and I know he's getting healthy, but we
- 21:17Speaker 2: got to stop putting him in center field. You can
- 21:19Speaker 2: put him in dh ll put him on the corner
- 21:20Speaker 2: if you want. Can't play center field, stop it. You
- 21:24Speaker 2: gotta help this pitching staff out. You gotta be elite
- 21:27Speaker 2: defensively up the middle. I love Dalton varshow to the
- 21:29Speaker 2: Pittsburgh Pirates. And although they don't have any money and
- 21:32Speaker 2: they can't add payroll, according to what Bob Nutting told
- 21:35Speaker 2: ben Cherrington that being said, Toronto has no problem paying
- 21:39Speaker 2: down money if they get the right prospects. That's the
- 21:42Speaker 2: other weapon they have besides Gosman, Bieber, varshow, Hoffman others
- 21:47Speaker 2: that they could pay down money to get better prospects,
- 21:50Speaker 2: which I think they'll do. I think the other interesting
- 21:52Speaker 2: thing with Toronto for me is if I'm Mark Shapiro
- 21:56Speaker 2: and Ross Atkins and I'm seeing all this in in
- 22:00Speaker 2: Mason Miller, i gotta ask everybody, well you give me
- 22:04Speaker 2: for Lewis Barland, because my guy's having as good a
- 22:06Speaker 2: year as that guy is. What are you willing to
- 22:08Speaker 2: give me? You're gonna give me four pieces, like you know.
- 22:11Speaker 2: Let me consider that for a minute, because I can
- 22:14Speaker 2: get closers. And you know, I don't know if Lewis
- 22:17Speaker 2: Barland's always going to be this impactful in that ninth inning,
- 22:21Speaker 2: But boy, I gotta tell you, I mean I made
- 22:23Speaker 2: a live in trading closers, Like I did it all
- 22:25Speaker 2: almost every single year. I had no problem bringing in
- 22:28Speaker 2: the next closer to win the Relief Award the following year. Right,
- 22:32Speaker 2: I mean I sat there and traded Jeff Shaw for
- 22:35Speaker 2: Paul Kronerko, turned him into Mike Cameron, turned him into
- 22:37Speaker 2: Ken Griffey Junior. Right, I traded Jeff Brantley got Dmitri Young.
- 22:41Speaker 2: I mean I traded Dave Berber against Sean Casey, Like
- 22:45Speaker 2: I never had a problem trading them and then replacing them.
- 22:49Speaker 2: And I think, I think, if I'm Toronto, I at
- 22:51Speaker 2: least want to check the market and kick the tires.
- 22:54Speaker 2: But there's no doubt they have to be sellers.
- 22:56Speaker 5: Here, Todd Father, you're hitting some games this summer.
- 22:58Speaker 2: What's the deal, of course?
- 23:00Speaker 6: And it's real simple, Scottie Braun. You know how it is.

- 23:56Speaker 1: I mentioned this earlier we were talking about the Blue
- 23:58Speaker 1: Jays and all the players they have. They have Alejandro
- 24:01Speaker 1: Kirk who signed to a long term deal. Valenzuela came
- 24:04Speaker 1: in and played really well for him.
- 24:06Speaker 4: Would they think.
- 24:06Speaker 1: About I mentioned the Matt Shaw and Michael Walker and
- 24:09Speaker 1: you give guys an opportunity, would it would Vealezuela be
- 24:12Speaker 1: a trade piece for the Blue Jays or Kirk or
- 24:16Speaker 1: vice versa. Trey Kirk let veal Zuela play because he
- 24:18Speaker 1: proved he could do it when Kirk was down. Would
- 24:21Speaker 1: the Blue Jays think about moving one of their catchers
- 24:23Speaker 1: because catchers could be a hot market this year.
- 24:26Speaker 2: Yeah, I definitely would. I would definitely shop. I would
- 24:28Speaker 2: shop both. To be honest, I like both catchers. I
- 24:31Speaker 2: probably want to hold on to Alijando Kirk right I
- 24:33Speaker 2: got to the World Series last year with him. I
- 24:35Speaker 2: probably want to reset this team and keep him there.
- 24:38Speaker 2: But Vealinzuela was a great pick up. I remember when
- 24:40Speaker 2: Ross Atkins got him, how excited he was because he
- 24:43Speaker 2: saw what he was going to do. And I think,
- 24:46Speaker 2: if I'm a team out there that's always looking for
- 24:48Speaker 2: a catcher, like the Tampa Bay Rays who were always
- 24:50Speaker 2: looking for a catcher, or Aj Preller in San Diego
- 24:53Speaker 2: is always looking for a catcher, and you can't afford
- 24:56Speaker 2: the or don't want to pay the price of a
- 24:58Speaker 2: Hunter Goodman or an Ali Utschman, or or the catcher
- 25:02Speaker 2: in with the athletics. I mean, yeah, d alean Zuela
- 25:07Speaker 2: cost effective and give them an opportunity. Sure, yeah, I mean, look,
- 25:11Speaker 2: catchers have are great trade value players, right, And I
- 25:15Speaker 2: remember back in the day when Jack McKean was running
- 25:18Speaker 2: the San Diego Padres and he had Sandy Alomar and
- 25:21Speaker 2: Benito Santiago and had to trade one of them, right,
- 25:23Speaker 2: I mean, it's a really good problem to have. So yeah,
- 25:26Speaker 2: I think if I'm Toronto, I'll shop both and I'll
- 25:29Speaker 2: see what I can get for each of them. But
- 25:31Speaker 2: I would definitely be open minded to dealing one to
- 25:34Speaker 2: be able to get a better need that I have,
- 25:36Speaker 2: maybe an outfielder that can smoke a little bit more
- 25:39Speaker 2: than what they're getting from their outfield offense.
- 25:42Speaker 4: All right, that makes sense. That makes sense.
- 25:44Speaker 1: Now, Jim, we're going to get to some you're not
- 25:45Speaker 1: going to like as much you want the salary cap.
- 25:48Speaker 1: You love a salary cap. You're the biggest salary cap
- 25:52Speaker 1: proponent in the history of the radio. Here's your quote.
- 25:55Speaker 1: I'm gonna read it. One of the reasons MLB is
- 25:56Speaker 1: pushing for a salary cap was best articulated by a
- 26:00Speaker 1: quote by Lebron James, who is not the best basketball
- 26:03Speaker 1: player of all time. When referring to the NBA, there's
- 26:05Speaker 1: been eight string years of different champions, James said, So
- 26:08Speaker 1: everyone feels coming in this season thinking this could be
- 26:10Speaker 1: our year. Every fan base feels like this could be
- 26:13Speaker 1: our year as well. MLB wants this, sure, they want this,
- 26:16Speaker 1: the NFL wants this, NHL wants this. But you know what,
- 26:20Speaker 1: the salary cab in the NBA only works when you
- 26:24Speaker 1: get guys to be former super team like Lebron. James
- 26:26Speaker 1: keeps switching teams because he wants to form a super
- 26:28Speaker 1: team in the next place he wants to go, and
- 26:30Speaker 1: he wants attention. Right, NFL has had multiple winners. The
- 26:34Speaker 1: Patriots had a long run, the Chiefs have had a
- 26:36Speaker 1: long run. The Eagles in a long run right now, right, hockey,
- 26:40Speaker 1: everyone it's either Vegas or Florida that wins the Stanley
- 26:44Speaker 1: Cup except for this year, which was Carolina. Okay, because
- 26:46Speaker 1: of state taxes. They're complaining about that. So why is
- 26:49Speaker 1: it such a big deal that MLB gets a salary
- 26:51Speaker 1: cab and why were the fans so against this?
- 26:53Speaker 2: On you, Jim, Yeah, look, I have no problem with
- 26:57Speaker 2: people's opinions. I mean look, I sat in the gair
- 27:00Speaker 2: for you know, sixteen and a half years, right, and
- 27:04Speaker 2: you know, do I think it's fair. Let's let's fast
- 27:07Speaker 2: forward a minute to October, and let's just say the
- 27:11Speaker 2: Dodgers and Brewers are playing in the NLCS. Sorry, the
- 27:16Speaker 2: Phillies didn't get there, Eric, because certainly they have the
- 27:19Speaker 2: top three pitchers to get there. But let's just say
- 27:20Speaker 2: it's Milwaukee in LA, who are the two best teams
- 27:23Speaker 2: right now in the league, and one team has three
- 27:27Speaker 2: hundred million more than the other. And let's just say
- 27:30Speaker 2: the playoffs go exactly the way they did last year,
- 27:33Speaker 2: where the Dodgers flex their biceps, they take their thirty
- 27:39Speaker 2: to forty million dollar a year players or seventy million
- 27:42Speaker 2: dollar year players, and they beat the Brewers. Okay, well,
- 27:45Speaker 2: if I'm Matt Arnold who's won two Executive Year Awards,
- 27:48Speaker 2: can I I don't have to be on even playing field.
- 27:51Speaker 2: I don't have to be within one hundred million of
- 27:53Speaker 2: your payroll. You can have five more twenty million dollar
- 27:57Speaker 2: players on me. I'll still beat you. But let me
- 27:59Speaker 2: at least be in the ballpark, right, I mean, let
- 28:02Speaker 2: me at least be able to spend close to you,
- 28:04Speaker 2: so I can add. I mean, that's all. That's the point, like,
- 28:09Speaker 2: I don't need to have the best. And by the way,
- 28:13Speaker 2: you know, it doesn't not how much money had you
- 28:14Speaker 2: could win anyway. I mean, look at Milwaukee, look at
- 28:16Speaker 2: Tampa Bay. I love it, smart people win. But how
- 28:20Speaker 2: many World Series as a small market team won in
- 28:23Speaker 2: the last eleven years. I'll give you the answer, zero, none.
- 28:27Speaker 2: And I'll tell you what we can talk about. How
- 28:29Speaker 2: great Milwaukee and Tampa is. We can do it. April, May, June, July, August, September, yay,
- 28:36Speaker 2: come October. You know where I'm going to be at
- 28:37Speaker 2: the World Series, Probably La or New York. Probably a
- 28:41Speaker 2: big market ballpark is where I'm going to be and
- 28:43Speaker 2: watching them hold up the trophy, wish champagne and congratulations
- 28:48Speaker 2: for four hundred and fifty million dollars you beat a
- 28:50Speaker 2: one hundred million dollar team. Congratulations, really proud of you.
- 28:53Speaker 2: That's the argument. I just want to be in the ballpark.
- 28:56Speaker 2: That's it.
- 29:00Speaker 3: Those years, how many of those small market teams have
- 29:03Speaker 3: pushed all in. How many of those small market teams
- 29:06Speaker 3: have said, oh, we shouldn't have pushed all in. We're
- 29:09Speaker 3: really hamstrung ourselves. They continue to not choose to push
- 29:13Speaker 3: all in and to choose to spend the money that
- 29:16Speaker 3: they're being given in what is supposed to be the
- 29:21Speaker 3: soft floor that other teams are sending them that money.
- 29:25Speaker 3: So to me, when that argument, which I totally agree,
- 29:28Speaker 3: you want to see plenty of and I have a
- 29:29Speaker 3: ring from the twenty fifteen Royals.
- 29:31Speaker 4: We were a small team. We pushed in, we pushed it.
- 29:35Speaker 3: Not in fourteen we lost because they traded for me
- 29:38Speaker 3: and not David Price. Not saying they had David Price,
- 29:41Speaker 3: but David Price was available and they got a backup
- 29:43Speaker 3: catcher who played twenty four at bats. Like, I get
- 29:47Speaker 3: that part of it. But show me a small market
- 29:49Speaker 3: team that pushes the Rays push this year, the Brewers
- 29:52Speaker 3: pushed this year and it doesn't work, then I might
- 29:56Speaker 3: start leaning a little bit.
- 29:57Speaker 2: Yeah. Look, I totally agree with your point. And it's
- 30:00Speaker 2: hard because when I sit there and you ask the owner, hey,
- 30:03Speaker 2: can I go get this fifteen million dollar player? And
- 30:06Speaker 2: they go, really, are you going to beat the Dodgers
- 30:09Speaker 2: if we do that? Like, well, no, okay, well why
- 30:13Speaker 2: don't I want to spend an extra fifteen million to
- 30:15Speaker 2: get the same result, Like, Okay, we might wait, we
- 30:18Speaker 2: might win a few more games and instead of getting
- 30:20Speaker 2: swept in the playoffs, maybe we win a playoff game
- 30:22Speaker 2: against them.
- 30:23Speaker 4: Yay.
- 30:24Speaker 2: G give the owners an incentive that, yeah, you can
- 30:27Speaker 2: actually win. Like, give them that incentive that when you
- 30:30Speaker 2: get to October, yes you can win two. You can
- 30:33Speaker 2: do it in the NFL, the NBA, and the NHL.
- 30:36Speaker 2: You can't do it in Major League Baseball. It's not
- 30:37Speaker 2: gonna have You may get lucky, don't get me wrong,
- 30:39Speaker 2: I get it, but in all likelihood, it's gonna be
- 30:42Speaker 2: the teams that are sitting there with thirty million dollars
- 30:44Speaker 2: starting pitchers and thirty million dollars with the two three
- 30:47Speaker 2: four hitters, right, I mean in all likelihood. But I
- 30:50Speaker 2: will say this, and I'm being totally honest here, I
- 30:52Speaker 2: am rooting for either the Brewers or the Rays to
- 30:56Speaker 2: trade for Trek Schouoble. I am rooting for a scenario
- 31:00Speaker 2: where I would love to see Milwaukee Tampa Bay in
- 31:03Speaker 2: the World Series. I think that would be great for
- 31:04Speaker 2: the game. We'll be terrible for the owners in their
- 31:06Speaker 2: labor negotiations, but to see Misserawski and schooball going against
- 31:10Speaker 2: the Dodgers. Yeah, that would that would be fun. I
- 31:13Speaker 2: would like to see that, or to see schoobl and
- 31:15Speaker 2: McClanahan going up against whether it's the Yankee, Seattle White Sox, whatever,
- 31:20Speaker 2: it's going to be sure, I would love to see
- 31:22Speaker 2: that as well. And I get both arguments. I do.
- 31:25Speaker 2: I just as a former GM, I would have liked to,
- 31:28Speaker 2: at least from a payroll perspective, just been in the
- 31:31Speaker 2: same ballpark with the big market teams. That's all. I
- 31:33Speaker 2: don't have to have the same payroll. Just get me
- 31:36Speaker 2: within one hundred million, that's all.
- 31:39Speaker 4: Jim. One thing.
- 31:39Speaker 3: First of all, the White Sox are not a small
- 31:41Speaker 3: market team.
- 31:41Speaker 4: They just act like they are. They're a big market.
- 31:43Speaker 1: Chicago's gigantic. Okay, it's a gigantic market. So I don't
- 31:47Speaker 1: want to hear I hate when people say, oh, the
- 31:48Speaker 1: White Sucks are a small market bold what every word
- 31:51Speaker 1: you want to put on big markets.
- 31:53Speaker 2: It is not.
- 31:54Speaker 4: It is not.
- 31:54Speaker 1: They could be a big market again, it's it's all
- 31:56Speaker 1: about what they want. And also, the Dodgers were about
- 31:59Speaker 1: this far from losing the World Series last year, so
- 32:01Speaker 1: it can happen. Okay, it can happen. The Phillies had
- 32:04Speaker 1: a chance to beat them. The Blue Jays should have
- 32:07Speaker 1: beat them. If you know, IKF gets a little bit
- 32:09Speaker 1: of a better jump at third base, they beat them,
- 32:11Speaker 1: So it can happen. Okay, I mean, listen, the Brewers.
- 32:15Speaker 1: I would love to see the Brewers in the World Series.
- 32:18Speaker 1: I'd love to see it be the Brewers and the Rays,
- 32:19Speaker 1: and then the owners would.
- 32:20Speaker 3: Be like, uh, what do we do here?
- 32:25Speaker 1: So but well it happened, I don't know. I mean,
- 32:28Speaker 1: we can root for it, not that we root for teams,
- 32:30Speaker 1: but we'll see what happens. It's one of those things, Jim,
- 32:34Speaker 1: we talked about this forever and unfortunately we're gonna have
- 32:36Speaker 1: months and months of time, so we're gonna have to
- 32:37Speaker 1: have you on every day so we can argue.
- 32:39Speaker 4: We can make this another network's channel. We can just argue.
- 32:41Speaker 1: We can just argue back and forth for hours. It's
- 32:44Speaker 1: so fun to watch. Not anyways, thanks Jim, we appreciate.
- 32:48Speaker 1: Don't forget to check out GM Territory with Gymnasts n
