- 0:12you grow as a coach. We're bringing the once a year
- 0:15track clinic straight to your ears daily.

- 0:23Now let's get into today's topic.
- 0:27There is surely nothing quite so useless as doing with great
- 0:31efficiency what should not be done at all.
- 0:35Today we're talking the Glide Shot Put on the Gill 1918
- 0:39podcast. Before we do, I wanted to
- 0:42introduce myself. My name is Ken Kemeny and I am
- 0:45the throws coach at Saint Charles North High School in
- 0:48suburban Chicago. I am also the throws coordinator
- 0:54for ITKA, the Illinois Track and Cross Country Coaches
- 0:56Association. We have our big annual clinic
- 1:00every year in January. We have a summer clinic that is
- 1:05wonderful that is about a month and a half away.
- 1:10There are a number of different coaches there that are going to
- 1:14be working with athletes and basically the people who signed
- 1:17up for the clinic and just shadow them.
- 1:21Ryan Whiting is the throws person coming in.
- 1:23Go to itca.com for details. I'm also the director of Throw
- 1:27Big Throw Far, Chicago. I threw many, many, many years
- 1:34ago under two of the best coaches on the planet, Scott
- 1:38Capos at the University of Iowa and Jim Aikens at Friend High
- 1:41School. So I was asked the question,
- 1:46what's the best way to teach a glider how to spin?
- 1:49What's the best way to make the switch from glide to spin?
- 1:55And it got me thinking, if everyone is going to throw the
- 1:58discus, isn't it more efficient to teach everyone to rotate
- 2:01first? Again, if if everyone is going
- 2:04to be doing the rotational motion in the discus and a lot
- 2:07of your guys are going to be spinning anyway, why are we
- 2:11teaching them the glide first? OK, Krauser did the glide first.
- 2:17Yes, a good glide might possibly, maybe were grasping at
- 2:21straws help athletes learn better stand throw mechanics
- 2:24like my grand pappy did. But just think about it.
- 2:28When you've got a huge group of kids with limited time, limited
- 2:32space, limited facilities, it's just more logical and efficient
- 2:37to teach everyone to rotate because everyone is throwing
- 2:40disc and a lot of those kids are going to be spinning anyway.
- 2:45I teach all my kids rotational stuff day one.
- 2:48I convert them to the glide if they struggle.
- 2:51A lot of these kids who initially struggle spinning pick
- 2:54it back up a year or two later and do awesome.
- 2:57There's years where everyone spins.
- 3:00This has saved me an enormous amount of time and energy
- 3:03because I don't have to run between two different practices
- 3:05that are running simultaneously, the glide practice and the spin
- 3:08practice. That's a nightmare.
- 3:10We should not be doing that if we can avoid it.
- 3:12Sometimes you can't, that's fine, but try to save yourself
- 3:16the trouble. Interesting story.
- 3:19This past winter my buddy Dan McQuaid was hosting Vestine
- 3:24Hofsteinsen, best discus coach in the world.
- 3:27He was coming here from Iceland to spoke to speak at a Wisconsin
- 3:31clinic run by my good friend Bill Richards.
- 3:35It was awesome. He also, Vestine, also helped us
- 3:38with various club things and workouts.
- 3:40It was really cool. And I got to spend a lot of time
- 3:43with him And he was very interested in sort of like how
- 3:46the throws coaches in the United States operated.
- 3:49And he said that if he was a throws coach in a high school in
- 3:54the United States, he would teach discus first because it's
- 3:58the simplest. Everyone learns discus, then
- 4:01everyone learns rotational shot. Then he would only teach glide
- 4:07to kids who couldn't rotate. Well one of the best coaches in
- 4:12the world says discus first, then rotation, then glide.
- 4:18To be clear I'm not anti glide. The national records 81 dude was
- 4:23a glider. MY2 best shot putters this year
- 4:27are gliders. I coached an Allstate glider a
- 4:30few years ago. I coached a state champion
- 4:33glider, glider, my gosh, 20 years ago.
- 4:37I can't even my brains breaking thinking about it.
- 4:40It just makes sense though, from a logistical standpoint to start
- 4:43everyone rotating. Now, if you're a glider looking
- 4:47to spin or just anyone looking to spin, you start the same way.
- 4:51But I want to toss out a couple disclaimers for our gliders
- 4:54turned spinners #1 this is not something to do in May.
- 5:01This is not something to do before your big meets.
- 5:04This is a over the summer in January, February project.
- 5:10If you want to learn to spend the summer, come find me throw
- 5:12big throw forward.com. So this is this is an offseason
- 5:17thing or an early season thing. That's one number two commit.
- 5:23You can't be going back and forth.
- 5:26We've all seen it Mayhem kid at a meet, they're mad, mom's
- 5:31crying, they're doing a glide. It went bad.
- 5:33Then they try to spin it was a better than they spin again and
- 5:36it it just it usually ends bad. OK, you got to commit.
- 5:41You can't have two girlfriends doesn't work out from a
- 5:46technical standpoint. One thing I would caution
- 5:49gliders turn spinners is you got to adjust your your power
- 5:55position and your stand throw. You're probably going to need to
- 5:59bring your feet closer together and you're probably going to
- 6:02need to be more upright. David Storl has this wonderful
- 6:07Instagram page where he is just like doing the there's video of
- 6:11him doing these like beautiful glide drills where he's so bent
- 6:15over and so wide and just pulls on the shot forever and it and
- 6:20you can't typically you can't hit that position as if you're a
- 6:23spinner. So narrow upright.
- 6:26OK, now it's hard for me to describe a lot of these drills
- 6:30in detail via podcast, so I'm going to speak in like really
- 6:34broad strokes here. If you want to see this in more
- 6:38detail, come find me or also check out my old high school
- 6:44coach. Jim Aikens has some wonderful
- 6:47articles online as well as stuff on on Coach Tube Thrower X with
- 6:53Joe Frontier, Scott Capos, Ryan Whiting.
- 6:55It's a wonderful resource. They also have a lot of these
- 6:58drills that I'm describing on YouTube and like throws
- 7:01progressions on YouTube. Check that out.
- 7:04Speaking of Scott Capos, he wrote a book, the Shot put and
- 7:07Discus Throws Manual that is on throwspro.com.
- 7:10It is like this generations Bible for the throws, which is
- 7:13pretty cool because his coach back in the day in high school,
- 7:16George Dunn wrote a couple generations ago Bible for the
- 7:20throws, the throws manual. Also, there was a throw big
- 7:25throw far podcast where John Smith, who does an incredible
- 7:28job, he talked about leg school go down that road.
- 7:32Check that out. So just about every day in
- 7:36practice we do unit turns and wheels.
- 7:40Unit turns and wheels. In my program I tell the kids
- 7:43that we need to do over 10,000 drills a year to become
- 7:47proficient. You need to make a game of this
- 7:50because there's nothing more miserable.
- 7:52At least I I mean I enjoy it, but you know, I'm throws junkie.
- 7:56But for a 16 year old kid to be doing drills in like a hallway
- 8:05outside my classroom in February while it's snowing, that's kind
- 8:08of a miserable thing. So keep them excited, keep them
- 8:11interested and challenge them. Like how many throws drills we
- 8:14got to do? Guys?
- 8:1410,000 OK, I think my my group has actually changed that to
- 8:1712,000. Love it.
- 8:19OK, but you got to do those every day.
- 8:22Those two drills are some of the cornerstones of just basic
- 8:26rotational technique. So how do you blend this
- 8:30together? One mistake I think some coaches
- 8:33make is not taking enough full throws early.
- 8:38Yes, they're going to be a disaster, it's fine.
- 8:42But waiting until the stand throw is perfect before you
- 8:46progress to the wheel before you progress to the the the full
- 8:50throw is problematic. I had a a thrower who whose PR
- 8:55was about 17010 or so years ago. He could not throw a stand throw
- 9:00in the discus. He straight up couldn't.
- 9:02It looked great when he was throwing a full, but I took too
- 9:06much time trying to fix his stand throw in the discus when
- 9:09like, dude could have just been throwing that whole time and
- 9:11been fine. OK, as like an educator, I think
- 9:15about this as kind of a spiraling curriculum, right?
- 9:20Kids are going to learn about photosynthesis four or five
- 9:24times from the time they're a kindergartner through their
- 9:27senior year of high school. It's going to get more complex.
- 9:31More is going to be expected of them.
- 9:33The the work that the AP bio students are doing when they're
- 9:3817 or 18 looks different than the, you know, coloring that
- 9:43they did when they were seven. Same thing here in the throes.
- 9:47You're you know, the freshman the first week is going to look
- 9:50different than the the senior in May now getting them.
- 9:58So get them playing around with with the the full movement.
- 10:00And a useful strategy is this idea of like drill, drill,
- 10:05throw, repeat, drill, drill, throw, repeat.
- 10:08You're having your athlete work on some skill, you're drilling
- 10:14that specific skill and then you're taking a throw, working
- 10:17on that specific skill, drill, drill, throw, repeat, drill,
- 10:20drill, throw, repeat. OK, so that you'll hear me
- 10:23discuss that now. The full throw in simplest terms
- 10:27is unit turn to a South African, step to the middle, do a wheel
- 10:36throw, again, unit turn, step to the middle, wheel throw.
- 10:44This is described different ways.
- 10:45You hear some people say turn around the left, turn around the
- 10:47right throw. It's all the same thing.
- 10:49OK, Start with those basic movements that they can just
- 10:56kind of step through and walk through this thing.
- 10:59OK, so hit those positions and then try a full so unit turn to
- 11:04South African position, step to the middle wheel, throw all in
- 11:08discrete chunks. 2 drills, 1 throw.
- 11:15Now we know that the throw is fluid.
- 11:18We know that it needs to be smooth.
- 11:19We know that there's rhythm. So how do we go from the peanut
- 11:22to the peanut butter? How do we take it from chunky to
- 11:25smooth? You start to blend this stuff
- 11:27together. So after you do unit turn, step
- 11:32to the middle wheel throw. You can do a unit turn just
- 11:39straight to the middle wheel, then throw.
- 11:42So you're skipping a step or you can do a unit turn to the South
- 11:48African position and then throw all in one motion.
- 11:52That is a helpful one for newbies.
- 11:54Cause one of the challenging things for rotational shot and
- 11:59and discus kids high school and anywhere is that initial part of
- 12:03the throw. And if you can start them in
- 12:06that in like a good South African position, a lot of times
- 12:08that's helpful. OK, but different permutations
- 12:11of like blending the thing together where again they do a
- 12:15unit turn right to the middle and then just throw from there.
- 12:18Or they do a unit turn to a South African and then just
- 12:21throw from there. Watch them identify the weak
- 12:26part. Usually they're tipping their
- 12:28shoulders, usually their right foot's flat in the middle.
- 12:31Usually they're leading with their eyes and upper body and
- 12:35and not their their lower body. Sometimes their rhythm isn't the
- 12:39nice. Watch them identify the weak
- 12:43part, Drill, drill, throw. Find the weak part, work on it
- 12:48in the drills, work on it in the full throws.
- 12:51Drill, drill, throw. Break it in chunks, drill it,
- 12:55blend it, throw, rinse and repeat.
- 12:59This basic concept and progression as well as the big
- 13:03picture, which is don't just teach the glide for no reason,
- 13:06teach it only when you need to teach it.
- 13:10If you adopt that, I think that's really going to help your
- 13:12throws program. If you want more, go to throw a
- 13:16big throw, far shot, throw a big throw. far.com, my good friend
- 13:20Joe Frontier has created this awesome network of throws camps
- 13:24throughout the Midwest. He is located in Madison, but we
- 13:26also have awesome sites in Milwaukee, in central Wisconsin,
- 13:30Wausau, that's God's country, central Illinois.
- 13:35I've got a spot in the Chicago suburbs and we are opening up
- 13:39kind of a a second location in Deerfield with my good friend
- 13:43Cody Farrick, who is a phenomenal throws coach.
- 13:46Coaches, if you're interested in learning more or visiting my
- 13:50camp, just come and hang out. Watch.
