- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Today we are in the latter
- 0:19portion of Isaiah 5, and Isaiah 5, as we learned last episode,
- 0:26is walking through the sins of the southern Kingdom of Judah.
- 0:30These people that were supposed to be God's people, but instead
- 0:33they were living just like the nations before them had lived.
- 0:37And in some ways they were actually living worse as a
- 0:41result of the fact that they had received truth from God.
- 0:44They had been given wisdom. They had been told what was good
- 0:48and what was bad, what they ought to do and what they should
- 0:50not do. And they even with the wisdom of
- 0:54God himself given to them, they chose to walk in their own path.
- 0:58And I think even for us today, as we begin diving into this
- 1:01portion of Scripture, we need to have a holy fear and trepidation
- 1:06to go. God, I am receiving instruction
- 1:09from you. Would you help me to obey it?
- 1:12That I wouldn't just hear what is good, but that I would
- 1:16actually live it out. That I wouldn't just hear what
- 1:19is bad, but that I would actively avoid it in my own
- 1:24life. Let's begin reading in verse
- 1:27#18. I believe we'll get through the
- 1:30end of the chapter today, but we'll begin in verse #18 Woe to
- 1:35those who drag iniquity with cords of deceit and pull sin
- 1:40along with cart ropes. To those who say, let him hurry
- 1:44up and do His work quickly so that we can see it.
- 1:47Let the plan of the Holy One of Israel take place so that we can
- 1:51know it. Woe to those who call evil good
- 1:54and good evil and substitute darkness for light and light for
- 1:59darkness, who substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter.
- 2:04Woe to those who consider themselves wise and judge
- 2:07themselves clever. Woe to those who are heroes at
- 2:11drinking wine, who are champions at pouring beer, who acquit the
- 2:15guilty for a bribe and deprive the innocent of justice.
- 2:21We'll continue on with some more of the sections. 24 and 25 are
- 2:25the next one, and then verses 26 to 30 is our last one.
- 2:29But in this initial section we see people that have proclaimed
- 2:34themselves to be the true God of Judah, that they view their own
- 2:41wisdom, their actions, their faculties, their senses as the
- 2:47ultimate test of what is right and wrong.
- 2:50We can see this in verses 18 through 18 and 19.
- 2:56First, that Isaiah says these people, they drag iniquity with
- 3:01cords of deceit and pull sin along with cart ropes.
- 3:05That something is too heavy for them to carry all by themselves
- 3:10and so they are bringing along more and more sin.
- 3:14Isaiah is saying they have heaps of sin, so much so that they
- 3:18need the assistance of cords and ropes in order to prop up all of
- 3:24the wrongdoing that they are involved in.
- 3:27He says in verse #19 that these people are skeptical of Isaiah's
- 3:33preaching about what God's Word is and about what God has
- 3:38declared. Because Isaiah's saying there
- 3:40was going to come a time of judgment for Israel and for
- 3:44Judah, and you guys are going to be in trouble unless you turn
- 3:48back to Yahweh and you repent. And so these people scoffingly
- 3:53say, well, let him hurry up and do his work quickly so that we
- 3:56can see it. They're like, hey, you know,
- 3:58where is this judgment of God? We, we don't see it happening
- 4:01anywhere. They say, let the plan of the
- 4:03Holy One of Israel take place so that we can know it.
- 4:06Like if God's really all that upset with us, if he's really
- 4:10real, then let him bring along destruction and judgment.
- 4:15This reminds me of what we would read even in Second Peter
- 4:19chapter 3 where Peter says that those that doubt even in his day
- 4:25about 600 years later, he says above all be aware of this.
- 4:31Scoffers will come in the last days scoffing and following
- 4:34their own evil desires, saying where is his coming that he
- 4:37promised. Ever since our ancestors fell
- 4:40asleep, all things continue as they have been since the
- 4:43beginning of creation. Hear these people that go, no,
- 4:47we're, we're fine. There's never going to be any
- 4:50judgment, any accounting, any reckoning of our bad behavior.
- 4:55And this is exactly what was happening in ancient Israel.
- 4:58But I want to echo to you guys, as Peter says in Second Peter 3,
- 5:03do not think that God's patience, the fact that Jesus
- 5:07hasn't come back yet as the judge of the whole world to
- 5:11judge the living and the dead, don't view that as God's
- 5:14indifference to the evil that is taking place.
- 5:17Instead, God is patient. He's long-suffering.
- 5:20He does not want, He doesn't desire, He's not willing that
- 5:25anyone would perish apart from him.
- 5:27His desire is that everyone would come to repentance.
- 5:31Now we know certainly from Scripture, not everyone will
- 5:35come to repentance, but that's not as a result of God hating
- 5:39people, of God, not wishing for people to make the right choice.
- 5:44Instead, they choose evil. And then we read in verse #20
- 5:50something that is very applicable to today's society,
- 5:54really in whatever nation of the world that you are in.
- 5:59This is true over and over again.
- 6:01Sadly, this is often been true even in churches.
- 6:04And through what pastors teach, through what professing
- 6:07Christians do, they follow this blueprint, if you will, in verse
- 6:12#20 he says woe to those who call evil good in good evil.
- 6:18So let me give just a few examples.
- 6:23God views marriage and intimacy within marriage as a wonderful
- 6:28thing, a good thing, something ordained and commanded by Him.
- 6:33Our world would say, well, you need to test out the car before
- 6:38you buy it, and so therefore you need to be intimate with one
- 6:42another before marriage. They say it is evil, it's
- 6:47unwise, it's dumb to follow God's instruction on marital
- 6:52intimacy. But God says this is good and it
- 6:56is evil to engage in intimacy outside of marriage.
- 7:00Our world hasn't flipped. You can look at what God gives
- 7:04about human sexuality, that it's supposed to be one man and one
- 7:09woman for one lifetime. The world says, well, that's
- 7:13really restrictive, it is evil. It is you're engaging in bigotry
- 7:19to say that that is the prescription and we think it can
- 7:24be man and man, woman and woman, polyamory all these sorts of
- 7:30things. Whatever you want to do goes
- 7:33they call good what God is called evil and they call evil
- 7:38what God is called good. Even today just saw a headline
- 7:44that an individual at their company had espoused frustration
- 7:50with having to affirm same sex relationships and and all of
- 7:58that as a part of their job having to wear memorabilia
- 8:04proclaiming that particular lifestyle and the individual was
- 8:09fired as a result of their dissatisfaction with that.
- 8:12Now I do not know all the particulars of that situation
- 8:17very well could be that a person was not disagreeing in like a
- 8:22Christ like a Jesus like way, a way that would mimic the way
- 8:28that Christ himself loves and cares for those that, yes, are
- 8:33in sin, yes, need to repent, but yet Christ always treated those
- 8:39in sin with need to repentance still in a godly way.
- 8:44We as fallen humans can often, if you will, we can have a right
- 8:49position, but a dreadfully wrong and sinful disposition.
- 8:53There's a right way and a wrong way to oppose our world's
- 8:57teachings on sexuality. So I don't know if the person
- 9:02did everything in the right way. I don't know if they, you know,
- 9:05were some bastion of great Christian about holiness and
- 9:09love and care, or if they said and, and did some things or use
- 9:12some language that they should not have.
- 9:14I don't know all the particulars of that.
- 9:17But it is certainly an area in which our world strongly
- 9:22disagrees with God and where God has, if you will, given us the
- 9:27the instruction about the tree of the knowledge of good and
- 9:29evil. I am telling you what is good
- 9:32and what is bad. And our world says, as Eve said,
- 9:35no, what you said was evil, I think is actually ultimately
- 9:40good. Even as you look through verse
- 9:4420, there's those parallels between the story of the Garden
- 9:48of Eden and hear what Israel was doing that you have the tree of
- 9:53the knowledge of good and evil. So that's what are those who
- 9:55call evil good and good evil. You can think back to Genesis 1
- 9:59where into the darkness God spoke light.
- 10:02And here it says, And who substitute darkness for light,
- 10:06and light for darkness? And then it says Who substitute
- 10:09bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter that God has the way that
- 10:13He has created us to operate as those made in His image to
- 10:19accomplish His work in the world and the world around us.
- 10:24The nation, whatever nation you're in does not follow what
- 10:29God has said. It doesn't matter what nation on
- 10:31earth that you're in. Mankind without Christ does
- 10:36this. And even those of us that
- 10:38profess to know Christ can very often say, I know God said that
- 10:43this is bad or that I shouldn't do this, but I really want to do
- 10:48this or say this or have this attitude.
- 10:51And so we often and fall into the same trap.
- 10:54And so we need over and over again to go back to the source
- 10:58of who tells us what is actually ultimately good, both for us and
- 11:03for others and for our relationship with God, and what
- 11:06hurts that relationship. Verse 21.
- 11:09Woe to those who consider themselves wise and judge
- 11:12themselves clever. None of us are the ultimate
- 11:18authorities on what is good or bad.
- 11:21None of us are the ultimate authorities on what happens in
- 11:26the spiritual side of things. The only way that we can know
- 11:29ultimate truth is through the Word of God.
- 11:33And so don't judge yourself to be wiser than the Word of God.
- 11:37Don't think of yourself as more clever than the writers of
- 11:41Scripture inspired by the Holy Spirit.
- 11:45Then in verse #22 he says, what are those who are heroes at
- 11:48drinking wine? Who are champions at pouring
- 11:51beer? We talked a little bit about
- 11:52this last episode, the pervasive drunkenness that made it so that
- 11:57people were pursuing pleasure instead of pursuing God.
- 12:01And we see in verse #23 that this goes forward to the fact
- 12:06that this was people in positions of leadership that
- 12:11threw their intoxication through their pursuit of pleasure and
- 12:17worldly goods, they were actually harming other people.
- 12:21So it wasn't just, oh man, you know, there's a fun party and
- 12:24I'm really living it up here. It was actually people that were
- 12:30responsible for the lives of others, who are responsible for
- 12:34justice that did not do what was right as a result of their
- 12:39pursuit of drunkenness and pleasure.
- 12:41So he says, what are those who are heroes at drinking wine, her
- 12:44champions at pouring beer, who acquit the guilty for a bribe?
- 12:48That people that should have been condemned because they
- 12:51received money, they were fine. This is an abhorable an
- 12:57abhorrent. I mixed abhorrent and horrible.
- 13:00This is an abhorrent practice that we see happen even today in
- 13:06many situations that that as people donate funds to a
- 13:11particular politician or a judge that they are able to receive
- 13:17favorable treatment as a result of them bribing.
- 13:21This is a horrible thing. Whenever you mix politics and
- 13:26money, this will always be a bad thing.
- 13:28We can see this even right here in Scripture says and deprive
- 13:32the innocent of justice. All right, this next section
- 13:36then. So we've seen a a bunch of sins
- 13:38of these people then verses 24 and 25.
- 13:41Therefore, as a tongue of fire consumes straw and as dry grass
- 13:47shrivels in the flame, so their roots will become like something
- 13:51rotten and their blossoms will blow away like dust.
- 13:54For they have rejected the instruction of Yahweh of
- 13:57heaven's armies, and they have despised the word of the Holy
- 14:00One of Israel. To reject the source of life
- 14:03means that you are embracing your own destruction and demise.
- 14:08Verse 25 Therefore, you always anger burned against his people.
- 14:13He raised his hand against them and struck them.
- 14:16The mountains quaked and their corpses were like garbage in the
- 14:20streets. And all this his anger has not
- 14:23turned away and his hand is still raised to strike that
- 14:26there were temporary punishments all along the way for Israel.
- 14:31So this is still a hundred, 150 years before Judah is taken into
- 14:37captivity by Babylon, but over the course of decades, God was
- 14:43punishing them in small ways to let them know that their
- 14:47behavior was not OK. We're told in Hebrews 12.
- 14:50Don't despise the discipline, the chastening of the Lord,
- 14:55because a father that loves his children is going to discipline
- 15:00them so that they do not do the bad things and that they embrace
- 15:03the good things, that they know that there's punishment as a
- 15:06result of following bad habits and bad ways of living.
- 15:13Now continuing to talk about the Lord and what he is doing.
- 15:17Verse #26 to the end of chapter 5, He raises a signal flag for
- 15:22the distant nations and whistles for them from the ends of the
- 15:26earth. Look how quickly and swiftly
- 15:29they come. None of them grows weary or
- 15:31stumbles. No one slumbers or sleeps.
- 15:33No belt is loose and no sandal strap broken.
- 15:37Their arrows are sharpened and all their bows strung.
- 15:40Their horses hooves are like their chariot wheels are like a
- 15:44whirlwind. Their roaring is like a lions.
- 15:47They roar like Young Lions. They growl and seize their prey
- 15:51and carry it off and no one can rescue it.
- 15:54On that day they will roar over it like the roaring of the sea.
- 15:58When 1 looks at the land, there will be darkness and distress.
- 16:02Light will be obscured by clouds here.
- 16:06God says Judah, I am bringing punishment on you for the
- 16:10wickedness that you were doing. You have rejected my word.
- 16:14You have enabled the guilty who should have been punished.
- 16:18You have punished the innocent who should have received
- 16:22justice. You have lived for your own
- 16:25pleasure. And so as a result, there is
- 16:28going to be, there are going to be consequences.
- 16:32Can I ask you today, are you allowing sin to simply have a
- 16:37home in your life or are you pursuing God's way of living?
- 16:41Are you pursuing life and joy, good community and care of
- 16:47others, or are you pursuing your own way?
- 16:51What makes you feel good? What gets you out on top?
- 16:55Or are you living for the Lord and for others?
- 16:58There is a very plain path placed here before us in Isaiah
- 17:035 and the simple command is follow the Lord, follow His way.
- 17:10Because when God judges, it is a total judgement.
- 17:15It is a judgement that we are shocked to see what God
- 17:20accomplishes, and though it is not instantaneous, it is
- 17:26certain. Just because God isn't punishing
- 17:29every evil person right now to the fullest extent does not mean
- 17:34that He will not one day punish. And can I tell you, even if you
- 17:38are not the most rich or powerful, your sins are not
- 17:42ultimately sins just against humanity, though very often they
- 17:47are. Your sins are sins.
- 17:49They are statements of rebellion against the eternal God, the
- 17:54Judge of all creation. And so humble yourself before
- 17:58him, Repent of your sin, believe in Jesus and trust that He will
- 18:04forgive you as He would have done for any of those in Judah
- 18:10that turned to Him. And we'll see next episode what
- 18:14it looks like when a person realizes their state before God.
- 18:19I'm really looking forward to chapter 6.
- 18:22It might take me like 3. It may take me 3 episodes to get
- 18:28through Isaiah chapter 6, just because it's so wonderful and
- 18:32has so many incredible truths for us.
- 18:35This was a sobering passage of scripture, and so I I hope that
- 18:40it has called your attention to your sin, to God's holiness, and
- 18:44of our desperate need to follow God, not rebel against Him.
- 18:49Thanks for tuning in. Hope that you have a wonderful
- 18:51day.
