Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / Small Vital Entities and Their Action in Human Life

- 0:01The mother relates two stories here about interactions she
- 0:05personally had with some small entities.
- 0:09One group were of goodwill and acted to remind her of things
- 0:12when she was otherwise distracted.
- 0:15She was able to pay attention to their hint and ensure that all
- 0:19worked out properly. It takes a great deal of
- 0:22quietness of the mind and development of a sensitivity to
- 0:26the touches of these vital entities to be able to recognize
- 0:30the hints and make use of them. The second experience was
- 0:35clearly a type of practical joke that an entity tried to carry
- 0:40out at Sri Aurobindo's expense. How else can we explain three
- 0:45different clocks stopping at the same time in three different
- 0:48rooms? Sri Aurobindo obviously had some
- 0:52power of action on that subtle plane and soon the clocks were
- 0:56up and running again. A somewhat similar experience
- 1:00occurred some years ago when a manager of a company came to
- 1:05work and found that the chair he used in his office had
- 1:08disappeared. It was apparent that some entity
- 1:13had taken the chair away. As a practical joke, he caused
- 1:17to be announced over the PA system of the company that if
- 1:22the chair was not back at his desk within one minute, the
- 1:26person responsible would lose their job.
- 1:30All in good fun and the spirit of the day.
- 1:33Of course, the chair returned quickly.
- 1:37In this case, it was a practical joke carried out by a human
- 1:41individual and the specific person was identified and the
- 1:45action was clearly defined. Yet we cannot explain away the
- 1:50two stories related by the Mother as having a specific
- 1:55human cause. The Mother observes quote.
- 1:59I had the experience among innumerable instances, but
- 2:04precisely of two very striking cases of two opposite things,
- 2:10only it was not the same beings. There are little beings like
- 2:14fairies, who are very sweet, very obliging, but they are not
- 2:18always there. They come from time to time when
- 2:21it pleases them. I remember the time I used to
- 2:24cook for Sri Aurobindo. I was also doing many other
- 2:28things at the same time. So I often happened to leave the
- 2:31milk on the fire and go for some other work or to see something
- 2:36with him to discuss with somebody.
- 2:39And truly I was not always aware of the time I used to forget the
- 2:44milk on the fire. And whenever I forgot the milk
- 2:47on the fire, I felt suddenly. In those days I used to wear a
- 2:52sari, a little hand catching a fold of my sari and pulling it
- 2:57like this. Then I used to run quickly and
- 3:00would see that the milk was just on the point of boiling over.
- 3:04This did not happen just once, but several times and very
- 3:08clearly like a little child's hand clutching and pulling.
- 3:14The other story is of the days Shiorobindo had the habit of
- 3:17walking up and down in his rooms.
- 3:20He used to walk for several hours like that.
- 3:23It was his way of meditating, only he wanted to know the time.
- 3:28So a clock had been put in each room to enable him to see the
- 3:31time at any moment. There were three such clocks.
- 3:37One was in the room where I worked.
- 3:39It was, so to say, his starting point.
- 3:43One day he came and asked what time is it?
- 3:46He looked and the clock had stopped.
- 3:49He went into the next room saying I shall see the time
- 3:53there. The clock had stopped and it had
- 3:57stopped at the same minute as the other, you understand, with
- 4:01a difference of a few seconds. He went to the third room, the
- 4:06clock had stopped. He continued walking three times
- 4:11like that, all the clocks had stopped.
- 4:14Then he returned to my room and said but this is impossible,
- 4:18this is a bad joke, and all the clocks one after the other
- 4:24started working again. I saw it myself, you know, it
- 4:28was a charming incident. He was angry.
- 4:31He said this is a bad joke and all the clocks started going
- 4:36again. End Quote.
