- 0:00Aloha. Tuesday morning in Hawaiʻi — it's a rough-water day with strong trade winds and a Small Craft Advisory in effect through 6 PM. Mele here with what's happening today.
- 2:00Sustained winds are running 25 mph with gusts near 40 in exposed spots — especially on the Big Island's Kona and Hamakua coasts, West Maui, and windward Oʻahu and Kauaʻi. Windward slopes on Maui and the Big Island will be wet this morning with showers on and off, but leeward and coastal areas stay mostly dry. If you're heading to the beach, the west and south shores are your safest bet today.
- 2:20Oʻahu's south shore is running 4.9 feet with moderate surf and rip currents — watch yourself. North shore is 5.5 feet, similar conditions. Maui's 3.4 feet — small enough for swimmers and beginner snorkelers. The Big Island's 1.6 feet at Hapuna, calm and safe. Kauaʻi's Hanalei is 7.2 feet, large and dangerous — experienced swimmers and surfers only.
- 2:37At Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, the Kahuku Unit Roads, Kīpukapuaulu Trail, and Lava Tube Bridge are closed for maintenance. The main park is open, but be aware of volcanic ash at higher elevations and take precautions if you're hiking there. Most parks and trails across the islands are operating normally.
- 2:53If you're on Kauaʻi and looking to escape today's wind, our new piece on Kokeʻe State Park explains why fall is when that high country really opens up. The overlooks at Waimea Canyon and Kalalau are clearest and coolest in the coming months, and Pihea Trail becomes genuinely pleasant when the afternoon heat drops. That's valuable if you've got Kauaʻi time ahead.
- 3:11From Thursday through the weekend, humidity will climb and rain will get heavier, especially at night. Trade winds stick around, so it won't feel thick, but expect wetter mornings overall. A west swell may arrive this weekend.
- 3:22Grab our Kauaʻi Essential guide if you're headed there — that island's weather swings fast. Talk to you tomorrow morning.
