- 0:42Speaker 1: normally introduce I find myself. I introduced guests like, uh,
- 0:46Speaker 1: like I'm dealing poker m hm clockwise if I'm gonna

- 1:04Speaker 1: one of my.
- 1:06Speaker 4: UH.
- 1:07Speaker 1: I don't want to. I don't want to get off
- 1:09Speaker 1: on the wrong foot by overdoing it. You're one of
- 1:11Speaker 1: my he you're one of my communication heroes. And let
- 1:16Speaker 1: me tell you more about why that is. Okay. You've
- 1:20Speaker 1: been making products for hunters for your whole life, and
- 1:25Speaker 1: you've been talking to hunters for your whole life, yep,
- 1:32Speaker 1: eye to eye. You don't talk down to hunters. You
- 1:37Speaker 1: don't talk, you don't criticize, you don't talk negative. You
- 1:43Speaker 1: have an infectious enthusiasm about the hunt. You have an
- 1:48Speaker 1: infectious enthusiasm about wildlife. You have an infectious enthusiasm about
- 1:54Speaker 1: your family, about the people around you. You celebrate everyone
- 1:58Speaker 1: around you. You don't bring people down. You've been doing
- 2:03Speaker 1: this how many years?
- 2:05Speaker 5: I'm seventy two. I started the company in nineteen seventy
- 2:07Speaker 5: six when I was twenty four.
- 2:09Speaker 1: I've never heard I've never heard a single person say
- 2:14Speaker 1: a single negative word about you.
- 2:16Speaker 5: Oh my gosh, Okay, that's awesome.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Let me tell you something that don't happen. Yeah.
- 2:21Speaker 5: Well, one time I killed this big deer, really big
- 2:24Speaker 5: deer in Mississippi. And my wife goes, have you been
- 2:29Speaker 5: on the internet? Have you seen what they're saying about you?
- 2:32Speaker 5: And I'm going no, And she says, well you ought to.
- 2:35Speaker 5: I said it don't matter what that what?
- 2:37Speaker 1: By the way, what are they say?
- 2:38Speaker 5: And they said, well, you killed it in a pin,
- 2:40Speaker 5: you raised it in a one acre pin, and then
- 2:42Speaker 5: finally killed it. I said, Okay, she says, you're not
- 2:45Speaker 5: going to go and answer that.
- 2:46Speaker 1: He says, no, you know, because we'll primos don't do that. Yeah,
- 2:51Speaker 1: it don't exist. So I ain't worried about it. And
- 2:54Speaker 1: it goes away.
- 2:55Speaker 5: But you know, I'm sure somebody says something bad somewhere,
- 2:57Speaker 5: but you know, the you know, the camera doesn't love everybody.
- 3:01Speaker 5: And I didn't want to be I didn't want to
- 3:04Speaker 5: become some known hunting person. That's not wasn't my goal.
- 3:07Speaker 5: My goal was to make a living. My goal was
- 3:10Speaker 5: to share my love of the outdoors with others and
- 3:13Speaker 5: get them to love it and hopefully want to protect it,
- 3:15Speaker 5: because if you protect what you love.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Yeah, so if I.
- 3:19Speaker 5: Can go out there and share il cunting and share
- 3:22Speaker 5: waterfowl in the green timber or just wherever we are
- 3:25Speaker 5: turkey hunting, you know, just whatever it is, if I
- 3:29Speaker 5: can share that and you can fall in love with it,
- 3:31Speaker 5: then you'll want to protect it. And it's all about habitat.
- 3:33Speaker 5: If we don't have the habitat, you ain't got the
- 3:35Speaker 5: critters they take. Each animal takes a certain quality of
- 3:39Speaker 5: habitat to thrive. And so that was kind of my goal.
- 3:43Speaker 5: And as I went and began to go through it,
- 3:45Speaker 5: and began to get a little bit of win in
- 3:48Speaker 5: my sale and understand that I might be able to
- 3:49Speaker 5: make a real company out of this thing I was
- 3:51Speaker 5: trying to do. I came on a realization that if
- 3:58Speaker 5: you can let people have the opportunity to know you,
- 4:02Speaker 5: then you have the opportunity for people to like you.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Now you're you're.
- 4:06Speaker 5: Gambling, because if they don't, you've really you've really kind
- 4:10Speaker 5: of hurt yourself. And so the key to that is
- 4:15Speaker 5: to keep your ego out of it. And that was
- 4:19Speaker 5: the secret behind Primos. When we hired people and we
- 4:22Speaker 5: had people and it was all about them, and because
- 4:24Speaker 5: everybody got to hunt, it wasn't about Will Primos. Everybody
- 4:27Speaker 5: got to hunt. When we went, we went, we went.
- 4:29Speaker 5: I would hunt usually first, and I didn't wait for
- 4:32Speaker 5: the biggest one.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Did a Cory Well for folks not watching, uh Phiel
- 4:39Speaker 1: just gestured to uh Corey, who sorry, Will just gestured
- 4:44Speaker 1: to Corey. And you guys a hunted together, which we'll
- 4:46Speaker 1: talk about.
- 4:47Speaker 3: Yeah we have.
- 4:48Speaker 5: So so anyway, you can't wait. So you can't wait
- 4:50Speaker 5: for the biggest one. If there's somebody behind you and
- 4:52Speaker 5: you only got five day window to try to fill tags,
- 4:55Speaker 5: and so I wouldn't kill the first thing that was
- 4:59Speaker 5: decent and let the person hunt. Yep, yeah, I'll never forget.
- 5:02Speaker 5: I forget what year of the fire was up there
- 5:04Speaker 5: at the c two thousand and one or nineteen ninety
- 5:08Speaker 5: nine or somewhere. Anyway, we were hunting, I begive this
- 5:11Speaker 5: first day was September seventeenth. We were hunting the bar None,
- 5:14Speaker 5: which was next to the C eight, and early snowstorm came.
- 5:19Speaker 5: We were staying in the old schoolhouse on the bar
- 5:21Speaker 5: None at ted Turner's place, and so we're staying there
- 5:26Speaker 5: and it's seventeen degrees and my wife says, I'm not going.
- 5:30Speaker 5: So we got in the suburban with our special tires
- 5:33Speaker 5: that we had put on for all our rental cars
- 5:35Speaker 5: and went up the mountain and got up there. Couldn't
- 5:38Speaker 5: find an out. Brad Ferris has said, will, I'm gonna
- 5:42Speaker 5: hunt first, and I'm gonna kill the first thing I see,
- 5:44Speaker 5: so that you could have the rest of the time
- 5:46Speaker 5: to try to kill a big one. I said, Okay,
- 5:50Speaker 5: can't finding out they've left. There's so much snow. There's
- 5:52Speaker 5: two feet of snow. We're pushing snow in front of
- 5:55Speaker 5: the vehicle. We're coming down and I see this elk
- 5:57Speaker 5: and he's been over feeding on something in the snow.
- 6:01Speaker 5: You can see his head down and he's about one
- 6:03Speaker 5: hundred and fifty yards away. And the winch r Wife
- 6:06Speaker 5: was wor in a minute, and they went and he
- 6:09Speaker 5: threw his head up and I went, oh, my gosh,
- 6:12Speaker 5: it's a big l I said, okay, buddy, look, look
- 6:15Speaker 5: nobody they didn't. Nobody saw him. He got spooked and
- 6:18Speaker 5: went down.
- 6:19Speaker 1: He went.
- 6:19Speaker 5: As soon as he went down, I said, bail, let's go.
- 6:21Speaker 1: We went.
- 6:22Speaker 5: After we got over there, he's going up hill. He's
- 6:24Speaker 5: about forty yards away. So I'm running the camera. So
- 6:27Speaker 5: I sat down with the camera. At the same time
- 6:29Speaker 5: I got on the hyper lip.
- 6:30Speaker 1: Yeah yeah.
- 6:34Speaker 5: He turned around and started coming. Brad scrambled him. He's
- 6:37Speaker 5: putting his release on getting he's getting ready. So this
- 6:40Speaker 5: elk comes up there and Brad won't shoot. He won't shoot.
- 6:43Speaker 5: So I got my range finder out of my vest
- 6:45Speaker 5: and I ranged him. I said fifty five. The elk stops,
- 6:48Speaker 5: turns round and walks sixty. Brad nails him at sixty yards.
- 6:54Speaker 5: Brad turned, he runs about twenty five yards and falls
- 6:57Speaker 5: over dead and rests. You think you'll go three thirty,
- 7:01Speaker 5: said Brad. You just killed a four hundred inch elk,
- 7:05Speaker 5: He goes.
- 7:06Speaker 1: Are you kidding me?
- 7:08Speaker 5: I never saw what elk the rest of the trip,
- 7:10Speaker 5: so Brad was gonna kill the first one he saw,
- 7:11Speaker 5: and he did. But you know, it's not about you.
- 7:17Speaker 5: It's about sharing. It's about being there, it's about loving it.
- 7:20Speaker 5: It's about teaching people how much fun we can have
- 7:23Speaker 5: out there, being a part of what God created, and
- 7:25Speaker 5: watching elk be elk during the rut and watching white
- 7:28Speaker 5: tails do it, and watching turkeys do it, and watching
- 7:31Speaker 5: ducks in their migration, and just being able to be
- 7:35Speaker 5: enthusiastic and share that and help other people get to
- 7:39Speaker 5: that spot. Some are more talented than others, some have
- 7:42Speaker 5: whatever might keep them from being as successful. But you
- 7:45Speaker 5: don't look down on them, You're right, You just you
- 7:47Speaker 5: help them rise up.
- 7:48Speaker 1: Yanny, tell Williams what you used to tell me about
- 7:53Speaker 1: the Truth video series.
- 7:57Speaker 3: I don't know how it was hugely.
- 8:00Speaker 1: You're talking about going down and checking at Walmart see
- 8:03Speaker 1: if they were out yet.
- 8:05Speaker 3: Oh right, pre internet?
- 8:08Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, I would go to the Walmart every two
- 8:11Speaker 6: or three days. You got them New Truth videos yet
- 8:13Speaker 6: you know, and they look at me like the what
- 8:16Speaker 6: you know? Because you know, we were in Avon, Colorado.
- 8:19Speaker 6: I don't know if you ever passed through there. That's
- 8:20Speaker 6: where the Walmart was there in Colorado. But oftentimes that
- 8:24Speaker 6: department might not have somebody that actually knew anything about
- 8:27Speaker 6: elk hunting.
- 8:28Speaker 3: I be like, yeah, it's about.
- 8:30Speaker 6: This big, it's gonna be kind of green, it's gonna
- 8:33Speaker 6: say the truth on it.
- 8:35Speaker 3: Can you call me when it gets here?
- 8:37Speaker 1: Yeah, let's go back to the beginning. And and and
- 8:40Speaker 1: in the beginning, you were born with very crooked fingers,
- 8:43Speaker 1: my little peaky fingers. Shout those off.
- 8:45Speaker 5: I don't know from my mother, my mother's side of
- 8:47Speaker 5: the family, there's an extra boat in therere shaped like
- 8:49Speaker 5: a triangle.
- 8:50Speaker 1: From south right. Huh south from the south. Yeah, well,
- 8:54Speaker 1: my mother, this probably is from her Irish shide of
- 8:57Speaker 1: her heritage.
- 8:59Speaker 5: I'm fifty Greek, and yeah, that's where a primo.
- 9:03Speaker 1: That's where that makes more sense.
- 9:05Speaker 5: That's where primos come from. My daddy was half French
- 9:09Speaker 5: and half Greek. Okay, he was a freak.
- 9:13Speaker 1: That's what he said. That's what he told me. My
- 9:15Speaker 1: daddy just passed away at ninety eight World War two
- 9:17Speaker 1: vet hell of a guy.
- 9:19Speaker 5: I'm telling you what, no kid, you know, kid and
- 9:21Speaker 5: wonderful man.
- 9:21Speaker 1: And your mom's still alive.
- 9:22Speaker 5: Yeah she's ninety seven.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Yeah wow. Yeah, but anyway, had a lot of turkey
- 9:27Speaker 1: meat or something.
- 9:28Speaker 5: Oh yeah, a lot.
- 9:30Speaker 1: So you were born out with crooked pink. Yeah. But
- 9:32Speaker 1: they don't get in the way.
- 9:33Speaker 5: And I don't worry about him, but some some people
- 9:36Speaker 5: have to know all about him, like people like you.
- 9:39Speaker 1: First thing, I asked you, right, when I meet someone,
- 9:43Speaker 1: I always checks if they got ten fingers there you go.
- 9:45Speaker 1: And in my account, I was like, wow, he's got nine,
- 9:47Speaker 1: he's got ten, but.
- 9:48Speaker 5: But one looks at off. So yeah, yeah type and
- 9:51Speaker 5: I got it in something. No, I've done that too.
- 9:54Speaker 4: Well.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Yeah, So did your dad hunt?
- 9:57Speaker 5: My dad was a it was a depression child, you know.
- 10:01Speaker 5: He he went through the Depression, He went through World
- 10:04Speaker 5: War two. He was a navigator in the Pacific and
- 10:08Speaker 5: lot never had a dime and was always working to
- 10:11Speaker 5: support his family to take care. So yes, he hunted,
- 10:14Speaker 5: but it was very limited. But I'll never forget.
- 10:17Speaker 1: I was six years old, double barrel, side by side
- 10:21Speaker 1: fox that he paid ten dollars for us Model B
- 10:25Speaker 1: Fox double trigger. I'm not familiar with that gun.
- 10:27Speaker 5: It's a side by side made by Fox. But anyway,
- 10:30Speaker 5: we walked out the back door and we went squirrel hunting.
- 10:34Speaker 5: I was so excited to go squirrel and my daddy
- 10:37Speaker 5: sees a nest. He goes, let's see if there's a
- 10:39Speaker 5: squirrel in there.
- 10:41Speaker 1: God, they go red squirrel.
- 10:43Speaker 5: Comes flying out of that nest.
- 10:44Speaker 1: That is a hammer. That was a fox squirrel. Yeah. Yeah,
- 10:50Speaker 1: this is just a little joke with us because in
- 10:53Speaker 1: the South, like we have a red squirrel, in the
- 10:55Speaker 1: North a pine squirrel. Okay, and in the South they confuse.
- 10:59Speaker 1: You got confused Yankees because when you tell Yankees that
- 11:03Speaker 1: you got a red squirrel, I'm picturing what we call
- 11:06Speaker 1: red squirrel with the tailor out with that No, with
- 11:10Speaker 1: his tail he's how long is the pine squirrel?
- 11:12Speaker 3: Well, the same little pine squirrel that runs around out west.
- 11:17Speaker 1: The one that gives me away when I'm sitting there college,
- 11:20Speaker 1: like he's always chittering at you, like that's a red
- 11:22Speaker 1: Like we'll hear red squirrel. So when you guys from
- 11:25Speaker 1: the South are getting red squirrels and you're talking to Yankees.
- 11:28Speaker 1: Yankees are thinking that you're getting little.
- 11:31Speaker 5: Our squirrels are twice that big. They got a big
- 11:33Speaker 5: white face.
- 11:34Speaker 1: Yep, that red squirrel. Yeah, that red squirrel. Uh. So
- 11:39Speaker 1: was your So did your folks your folks were us
- 11:42Speaker 1: born though, Oh yeah, they're they're us born. Yeah, got it.
- 11:47Speaker 1: And you would get and he would do uh some
- 11:49Speaker 1: little bit of hunting.
- 11:50Speaker 5: Oh yeah, girl hunting, dove hunting, take me duck hunting,
- 11:54Speaker 5: duck cutting on the river. We didn't do any serious
- 11:56Speaker 5: waterfowl hunting. That was left up to my uncles. My
- 11:59Speaker 5: uncles were all interested in playing. I had four uncles
- 12:02Speaker 5: and they were awesome, and they they took me serious
- 12:07Speaker 5: waterfowl And when I was eleven years old, that's the
- 12:10Speaker 5: first time I stood in twelve inches of water in
- 12:12Speaker 5: green timber and watched two hundred matters come down.
- 12:15Speaker 1: Through the trees. And I was, I was, I was?
- 12:18Speaker 1: That was it? So you had some serious experiences, ah young, Yeah? Yeah?
- 12:23Speaker 3: Uh.
- 12:23Speaker 1: Do those guys make calls? Like how did you get
- 12:25Speaker 1: interested in making calls?
- 12:27Speaker 5: So, my uncle Gus was a great caller and he
- 12:30Speaker 5: blew ay Jake Gardner's single red call guy from Uncus,
- 12:33Speaker 5: who was friends with Chicken Major's famous call maker, and
- 12:38Speaker 5: so I took that call and my daddy had a
- 12:41Speaker 5: lathe and I just tried to copy it. And that
- 12:44Speaker 5: started my game calling desire to figure out how to
- 12:47Speaker 5: make things that made sounds.
- 12:50Speaker 1: When you say you took a leave, like, explain that
- 12:52Speaker 1: to people that might not.
- 12:54Speaker 5: You chuck a piece of wood into it and you
- 12:56Speaker 5: turn it to shape it like you want, and then
- 12:58Speaker 5: you drill out the center.
- 13:00Speaker 1: Uh, you've got to make the soundboard.
- 13:01Speaker 5: You've got to figure out the curve and how how
- 13:05Speaker 5: to make the cork hold it in place. Well, the
- 13:08Speaker 5: cork is a wedge that holds the reed to the soundboard.
- 13:11Speaker 5: What's the what's the reed gonna be made out of?
- 13:14Speaker 1: The reds? Are we?
- 13:15Speaker 5: We in the old days were very limited in the products.
- 13:19Speaker 5: But when when I started in seventy six doing stuff,
- 13:23Speaker 5: we were borrowing from the medical industry and the automotive industry,
- 13:27Speaker 5: any any technology that we could to building into game
- 13:32Speaker 5: call So my lar became.
- 13:34Speaker 1: The reed of choice. My Lar, Yeah, uh for for reeds.
- 13:39Speaker 5: But you have a spool, and so most people think
- 13:42Speaker 5: where you would stamp the read out with the length
- 13:45Speaker 5: of the spool, Well, if you do that, there's a
- 13:47Speaker 5: huge curve in the reed which totally changes the sound.
- 13:50Speaker 1: Oh well, you'll never get that curve out of it,
- 13:52Speaker 1: that's right.
- 13:53Speaker 5: So you've got to You've got to stamp it crossways.
- 13:57Speaker 5: And then if you stamp it on the outside of
- 13:59Speaker 5: the there's a slight bow in that reed, And if
- 14:03Speaker 5: you stamp it out of the center where it's called
- 14:05Speaker 5: up in the center, there's a much tighter that totally
- 14:09Speaker 5: changes the sound of the call.
- 14:10Speaker 1: And you can't press that bow out of there by
- 14:12Speaker 1: getting a little warm or something.
- 14:14Speaker 5: You can try, but I was never able to do it.
- 14:16Speaker 5: And whether it's upside down or right side up on
- 14:19Speaker 5: the soundboard.
- 14:19Speaker 1: Makes a huge difference to So can you nowadays just
- 14:23Speaker 1: get it flat? I don't know. I couldn't do it.
- 14:27Speaker 1: Couldn't get it flat when you were doing that? Why
- 14:31Speaker 1: did your dad have a lathe?
- 14:33Speaker 5: He just ThReD a woodworking shop. He was turning and
- 14:37Speaker 5: building would just as a hobby, building stuff all the time.
- 14:42Speaker 1: He built tops.
- 14:42Speaker 5: You put him in a box and tie a string
- 14:45Speaker 5: around and pull the little top, go around and bunce
- 14:48Speaker 5: around and knock stuff over. He's always doing.
- 14:50Speaker 1: Stuff like that. God who'd you sell your first call to?
- 14:54Speaker 7: Uh?
- 14:54Speaker 5: Buck Deerman?
- 14:57Speaker 1: I don't know who that is.
- 14:58Speaker 5: Buck Derman was a friend of mine. He courage old
- 15:00Speaker 5: as a buddy years okay, yeah, and he he encouraged
- 15:03Speaker 5: me because the calls he had, the turkey calls he had,
- 15:06Speaker 5: were following apart. And he said, look, you can do this.
- 15:10Speaker 5: I said, I can't do that. I don't know nothing
- 15:12Speaker 5: about making no turkey call. He goes, yes, you can.
- 15:15Speaker 5: So I went to work and built one in box call,
- 15:18Speaker 5: no mouthcoll. You did those first, that was the first.
- 15:21Speaker 1: What you made.
- 15:22Speaker 5: It was a It was a double read. It had
- 15:23Speaker 5: two reads stacked on top of each other. They were
- 15:26Speaker 5: the reads were an eighth of an inch apart.
- 15:29Speaker 1: And you made that before you made a wood call.
- 15:31Speaker 1: That's right, huh would you? Would you? How you build that?
- 15:36Speaker 5: How do I build the You just one and got
- 15:38Speaker 5: like prophylactic latex, and well you'd go back then we
- 15:42Speaker 5: called them rubbers. They weren't called prophylactics because that dirt.
- 15:45Speaker 5: That word didn't exist where kids they were called, that
- 15:47Speaker 5: word exists.
- 15:48Speaker 1: And so we go to your tooth brush. Your toothbrush
- 15:50Speaker 1: is a prophylactic. It's a disease prevention.
- 15:53Speaker 5: To understand that. But anyway, so we'd go to the
- 15:55Speaker 5: service station because you could not buy them in a
- 15:57Speaker 5: drug store. They weren't on the count yet, only given
- 16:00Speaker 5: like a prescription, so you you weren't allowed to buy.
- 16:04Speaker 5: So you go to the service station and you'd buy
- 16:07Speaker 5: whatever they had, and most of them were lubricated.
- 16:09Speaker 1: Now would you go be like, hey, I want you
- 16:11Speaker 1: to get the wrong idea. I'm making turkey calls here.
- 16:13Speaker 5: Well not, there's a story about that.
- 16:15Speaker 1: Ok So, finally I went to Daddy and I said, Daddy,
- 16:19Speaker 1: I finally figured out which one of these rubbers works
- 16:22Speaker 1: are the best, and it's not lubricated, and I need
- 16:25Speaker 1: to order them from the pharmacists.
- 16:26Speaker 5: But I'm only seventeen or however old I was. I said,
- 16:30Speaker 5: would you call mister park in the Parking's pharmacy and.
- 16:33Speaker 1: Order me a case?
- 16:35Speaker 5: He said, be glad to so.
- 16:37Speaker 1: Okay.
- 16:37Speaker 5: So they called me and said you're rubbers are in. Okay.
- 16:46Speaker 5: I went down there, walked up to the counter. Mister
- 16:48Speaker 5: Parker put him on the counter, and my my counselor
- 16:51Speaker 5: from high school, Miss.
- 16:52Speaker 1: Breelin, walked up. He knew he knew you know.
- 16:56Speaker 5: So he looked at me, and he looked at her,
- 16:57Speaker 5: and he handed them to me, and he goes, you
- 16:59Speaker 5: can pay at the girl up front, and I went okay.
- 17:02Speaker 5: So Hays Brayley took off up front and his little
- 17:05Speaker 5: blond headed, blue eyed girl up there. He had a
- 17:07Speaker 5: little job as a cashier. I put him on the
- 17:09Speaker 5: accounter there and she looked there and she goes, we're
- 17:11Speaker 5: having a party at the grove tonight. And I said,
- 17:15Speaker 5: you don't understand. I'm making turkey calls out of these.
- 17:18Speaker 5: And she said, you can come anyway.
- 17:24Speaker 1: That's a true story. How long you been married?
- 17:28Speaker 5: I've married thirty four years. It's a second marriage for
- 17:30Speaker 5: Mary and I.
- 17:31Speaker 1: We have no children. We mean a second marriage.
- 17:34Speaker 8: Ye.
- 17:35Speaker 1: You haven't married the same person twice, but you've been married.
- 17:37Speaker 5: Oh you know, I was married once before it didn't
- 17:39Speaker 5: work out.
- 17:40Speaker 1: How long you married the first time? Fourteen years? On paper,
- 17:44Speaker 1: it's a good chunk of time. Yeah, but then you
- 17:47Speaker 1: knew it wasn't right.
- 17:48Speaker 5: Oh, I knew it long before that. Yeah.
- 17:50Speaker 3: That's an interesting way to put it on paper.
- 17:52Speaker 5: Yeah, that's a qualification that goes a long way.
- 17:56Speaker 1: Yeah. Uh So this guy asked you to come a
- 18:00Speaker 1: turkey call. Yeah, and you get your robbers, you get
- 18:04Speaker 1: some aluminum.
- 18:06Speaker 5: I got some beer in ten beer cans to walk
- 18:10Speaker 5: me through it.
- 18:12Speaker 1: Well, you at first, you got to shape it.
- 18:13Speaker 5: You gotta side. Everybody's mouth is different. That's one of
- 18:16Speaker 5: the problems with turkey cars. Some people have very narrow palette.
- 18:19Speaker 5: Some people have very high palette. Some people have wide
- 18:21Speaker 5: palettes and low so the mouth is huge. So I
- 18:25Speaker 5: can look at somebody's face and have a pretty good idea,
- 18:28Speaker 5: but I'll have them lean back and open their mouth
- 18:30Speaker 5: and look at their palette because they tell me they're
- 18:32Speaker 5: having trouble that gag or this. Some people have a
- 18:35Speaker 5: short throat, short pallet, and that those people gag a
- 18:40Speaker 5: whole lot more than the people that have what I
- 18:42Speaker 5: call it a normal palette.
- 18:43Speaker 1: So so you can eyeball someone's palette and then make
- 18:46Speaker 1: a recommendation yeah, yeah, and so so then you start
- 18:50Speaker 1: trying to get that to fit so that that call
- 18:54Speaker 1: becomes the roof of the mouth and once you can.
- 18:57Speaker 5: Seal that there and pass air through it. It's all
- 18:59Speaker 5: about out your jaw.
- 19:01Speaker 1: It's all about how you move your jaw and how
- 19:03Speaker 1: and how you use your lips to be able to
- 19:06Speaker 1: call turkeys. But explain the back in those days, what
- 19:10Speaker 1: you got together to make a call.
- 19:13Speaker 5: Well, I started out with an adhesive. It was kind
- 19:16Speaker 5: of like a contact cement that I would coat onto
- 19:20Speaker 5: these illuminum frames that well, you illumined them out out
- 19:23Speaker 5: of beer cans. It wasly ten uh, and you would
- 19:27Speaker 5: get that on there, and then you put get the
- 19:30Speaker 5: right stretch that you thought you'd put it down on
- 19:33Speaker 5: the frame, and then you part of the beer can
- 19:36Speaker 5: the lid. Sometimes the lid with lid was usually too thick,
- 19:40Speaker 5: but that had worked because it helped separate mine a
- 19:44Speaker 5: certain distance. He used different stuff, But then I went
- 19:47Speaker 5: to aluminum, and then I built ade and it was
- 19:51Speaker 5: I didn't have a I didn't have a punch press.
- 19:53Speaker 5: So I went to the die maker and said, here's
- 19:56Speaker 5: what I want, here's the shape, here's what I want,
- 19:58Speaker 5: and I want to feed the strip of aluminum through there,
- 20:01Speaker 5: and I just want to hit it with a sledgehammer.
- 20:03Speaker 5: He goes, okay, so we still have it. I mean,
- 20:07Speaker 5: it's still a little risk play. So it's got big
- 20:09Speaker 5: legs and you fed it through there, put the aluminum,
- 20:12Speaker 5: put it on there and took the sledgehammer. Bamn, there's
- 20:14Speaker 5: your peace, bounced on the concrete, and you know you'd
- 20:19Speaker 5: get a piece a whole lot quicker than I could
- 20:21Speaker 5: cut him out. But the real secret was people in
- 20:24Speaker 5: Pennsylvania figured out how to make what's called a crown
- 20:27Speaker 5: frame where the outside edges of the frame pinch the reed,
- 20:33Speaker 5: so you stretch the red, insert the frame, fold it over,
- 20:36Speaker 5: then have a tab that helped seal itep. So that
- 20:39Speaker 5: became a lot more efficient and a lot better.
- 20:41Speaker 1: That was Pennsylvania innovation.
- 20:43Speaker 5: Yes, as far as I know, that's correct.
- 20:46Speaker 1: So when you sold that first call where you just
- 20:47Speaker 1: saw off to the races then or was it slow?
- 20:49Speaker 1: You know?
- 20:50Speaker 5: I charged him twenty bucks, you know, and he was thrilled.
- 20:53Speaker 5: And that was twenty bucks in nineteen probably seventy.
- 20:56Speaker 1: Five or so. How many calls did you give him
- 20:57Speaker 1: for twenty bucks?
- 20:58Speaker 5: One mouth gul.
- 21:01Speaker 1: Wow, wow.
- 21:02Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 21:03Speaker 1: I wantn't go sit there and do all that. I
- 21:04Speaker 1: mean that there was too much.
- 21:05Speaker 5: And Buck understood, and he said, I want you to
- 21:08Speaker 5: I want you to make me more.
- 21:10Speaker 1: How many could you make in a day?
- 21:12Speaker 9: Here?
- 21:12Speaker 5: I asked that question, Seth, I don't know. It was
- 21:17Speaker 5: usually a night because I was working in the day
- 21:19Speaker 5: and i'd get home sometimes eleven o'clock at night. I
- 21:21Speaker 5: was in the restaurant business with my family, okay, And
- 21:23Speaker 5: so I might work two or three hours and I
- 21:25Speaker 5: might make six or ten.
- 21:28Speaker 1: It took a while. If I had the parts done.
- 21:30Speaker 9: Yeah, if I had the So would you go through
- 21:32Speaker 9: and make all the parts and then and then have
- 21:34Speaker 9: a night where you just went through and finished everything.
- 21:37Speaker 1: I ended up using double sided sticky tape rather than
- 21:40Speaker 1: a glue, and that worked pretty good. Oh. So that
- 21:42Speaker 1: would put it on one side of the frame, peel
- 21:44Speaker 1: it off, put the latex in place, and then seal
- 21:47Speaker 1: it did stick to it? Gotcha? Is it safe to
- 21:49Speaker 1: say that if you hadn't discovered making calls, you to
- 21:53Speaker 1: bend restaurant business for career?
- 21:55Speaker 4: No?
- 21:55Speaker 1: No, I didn't.
- 21:58Speaker 5: I didn't love the restaurant business. It was too confined.
- 22:00Speaker 5: I I just couldn't working twelve fourteen, sixteen hours a day,
- 22:05Speaker 5: six days a week most of the time, and part
- 22:08Speaker 5: of the seventh day. I just it just was, it
- 22:11Speaker 5: didn't work for me.
- 22:12Speaker 1: What was the family restaurant?
- 22:14Speaker 5: We had five of them, my grandfather, my daddy's daddy,
- 22:17Speaker 5: immigrated at eight years old from Greece in nineteen oh eight.
- 22:19Speaker 1: Came through New Orleans.
- 22:21Speaker 5: Of course, he was uneducated, didn't know anything, couldn't speak English,
- 22:25Speaker 5: and his mother. The Turks killed his daddy. His mother
- 22:29Speaker 5: lost their property to the Turks and brought them over
- 22:32Speaker 5: to the United States for a new life. New Orleans
- 22:35Speaker 5: restaurant business. All Greeks become restaurant tours, and he learned
- 22:40Speaker 5: how to bake and how to bust tables, and he
- 22:43Speaker 5: was very smart. He ended up building quite a quite
- 22:47Speaker 5: a business.
- 22:48Speaker 1: But he wasn't building Greek restaurants down there. Say he
- 22:51Speaker 1: wasn't making Greek restaurants, was he? It had all had
- 22:54Speaker 1: Greek flares, to Greek salides, steak houses, different, everything had
- 22:58Speaker 1: something very Greek oriented about it. Yeah.
- 23:01Speaker 5: Yeah, So I sold my interest in the company, owned
- 23:07Speaker 5: stock in the company. Family five restaurants, and there were
- 23:10Speaker 5: a huge Some of them were huge.
- 23:11Speaker 1: One of them was four hundred yards long, had thirteen
- 23:14Speaker 1: banquet rooms, had.
- 23:15Speaker 5: Two restaurants inside it. She she's absolutely huge. Three hundred
- 23:19Speaker 5: and fifty employees is huge.
- 23:21Speaker 1: Damn is huge. But I sold my stock back in
- 23:24Speaker 1: nineteen eighty eight and told Daddy that I can't do it,
- 23:28Speaker 1: and because you wanted to plow that money into your business.
- 23:32Speaker 1: I didn't have any money, but I wanted to put
- 23:33Speaker 1: my energy into business. At what point did you know
- 23:38Speaker 1: that you were just that you had established yourself and
- 23:41Speaker 1: you're gonna be making calls the rest of your life.
- 23:44Speaker 5: In nineteen ninety I had a million dollars in sales
- 23:47Speaker 5: and my CPA told me I made money.
- 23:52Speaker 1: I said, show it to me.
- 23:55Speaker 5: He said, it's an inventory and it's unreceivable. I said,
- 24:00Speaker 5: and now you owe this much in taxes. I went, well,
- 24:03Speaker 5: where does that come from? He said, I guess you'd
- 24:05Speaker 5: go borrow that too.
- 24:06Speaker 1: Oh, I gotcha. How many people did you have at
- 24:09Speaker 1: that point? Oh?
- 24:10Speaker 5: Probably eighteen or so.
- 24:14Speaker 1: Yeah. When I sell the company, we had right at
- 24:16Speaker 1: two hundred. Right shot, What year did you sell premost
- 24:20Speaker 1: game calls? Night?
- 24:22Speaker 5: Two thousand and.
- 24:24Speaker 1: Six. Johanni wants to ask you a question.
- 24:31Speaker 3: About voiceover.
- 24:32Speaker 6: Yeah, man, we were just we had a little content
- 24:34Speaker 6: summit with a bunch of our creators just earlier this week,
- 24:37Speaker 6: and we and Steve talked about his approach to voiceover,
- 24:42Speaker 6: and that was really a hallmark. I felt like of
- 24:45Speaker 6: the truth videos was your narration. Talk a little bit
- 24:51Speaker 6: about that, like why why Woul did that end up
- 24:53Speaker 6: being the way that you guys did those videos where
- 24:55Speaker 6: it seemed like you sort of recorded them, but there
- 24:58Speaker 6: wasn't really too much story on camera. It was really
- 25:01Speaker 6: your voice that then narrated and drove that story.
- 25:04Speaker 5: Well, it's really hard to keep the camera running twenty
- 25:08Speaker 5: four to seven, so to speak and capture every moment
- 25:11Speaker 5: and every word. And then back then when we were
- 25:15Speaker 5: doing it, we didn't have the audio capabilities we have now.
- 25:18Speaker 5: You didn't have the wireless mics, so the mic was
- 25:22Speaker 5: on the camera, so you had to tell the story
- 25:25Speaker 5: to bring the viewer into place somehow.
- 25:29Speaker 1: So what would they do?
- 25:30Speaker 5: They'd edited, the editors would edit it on Avid edit
- 25:34Speaker 5: systems the way they thought it out a beat, and
- 25:37Speaker 5: then they would write what they thought needed to be said.
- 25:41Speaker 5: And then they would bring me in and I would
- 25:44Speaker 5: watch it and look at their words and change it
- 25:46Speaker 5: to my lingo, to my words because I was I
- 25:50Speaker 5: became the voice.
- 25:52Speaker 1: Man. I didn't realize, but we we really just stole
- 25:54Speaker 1: will system.
- 25:55Speaker 3: Yeah, that's kind of how I feel.
- 25:59Speaker 1: We owe you some like we owe you some sort
- 26:01Speaker 1: of payment for having accidentally stole your methodology, you owe
- 26:05Speaker 1: me nothing you got. You remain like a very staunch
- 26:12Speaker 1: supporter of a bunch of conservation or I shouldn't say
- 26:14Speaker 1: a bunch, but I know you're heavily involved in conservation groups.
- 26:18Speaker 1: Who do you like to? I know you help out
- 26:20Speaker 1: NWTF a lot. Now who else do you get involved with?
- 26:24Speaker 5: Well, there's so many out there, but those that are
- 26:27Speaker 5: so connected to being able to double and triple the
- 26:32Speaker 5: money that they get through grants, those are the ones
- 26:36Speaker 5: that I'm right now most interested in.
- 26:38Speaker 1: Help me understand that.
- 26:40Speaker 5: So if you give Ducks unlimited one hundred thousand dollars,
- 26:45Speaker 5: there's a good chance they can turn that into three
- 26:47Speaker 5: or four or thousand dollars.
- 26:48Speaker 1: But I don't understand.
- 26:49Speaker 5: I mean they apply for grants through the federal government
- 26:53Speaker 5: typically to do matching campaigns, matching in dublin and tripling.
- 26:59Speaker 1: Okay, meaning if they're able to demonstrate citizen corporate sponsorship
- 27:07Speaker 1: that somehow can lead to more.
- 27:08Speaker 5: Yes, it can. So what I center in on, all
- 27:12Speaker 5: of my interest goes toward habitat protection and restoration.
- 27:17Speaker 1: So that's where you personally like to.
- 27:19Speaker 5: I personally try to put all of my enter into
- 27:22Speaker 5: the ground on the ground.
- 27:23Speaker 1: That's correct. Yeah, you know.
- 27:25Speaker 5: So I'm just now engineering a situation. I have got
- 27:31Speaker 5: a set of Party shotguns. Party is a London made
- 27:37Speaker 5: side by sys the p U r D Y right
- 27:39Speaker 5: p U r D E y d E y Okay
- 27:41Speaker 5: Party shotguns. And so I have the only consecutive set
- 27:46Speaker 5: serial numbered Party side by side hammer shotguns ever made four, ten, twenty,
- 27:53Speaker 5: sixteen and twelve. And so I've been collecting these for
- 27:58Speaker 5: about almost twenty years, and I reserved when I ordered
- 28:03Speaker 5: my first.
- 28:03Speaker 1: One, I reserved all the serial numbers.
- 28:06Speaker 5: And so the guns cost somewhere through my through my
- 28:11Speaker 5: years of buying them, somewhere around a million two and.
- 28:16Speaker 1: To accumulate the collection to get the collection.
- 28:20Speaker 5: And so I'm now giving those guns to conservation. And
- 28:26Speaker 5: the Congressional Sportsman's Foundation, which a lot of people don't
- 28:29Speaker 5: know about, is a fantastic organization that helps to protect
- 28:33Speaker 5: all of our hunting and fishing rights, habitat restoration, habitat
- 28:36Speaker 5: protection by state and federally. And they're out there fighting
- 28:41Speaker 5: making sure the states passed the right legislation, making sure
- 28:44Speaker 5: the federal government passes the right legislation, and so I
- 28:47Speaker 5: chose them to head this project up. And so Rock
- 28:53Speaker 5: Island is the great auctioneer of high end guns, and
- 28:57Speaker 5: they're going to auction off my guns.
- 28:59Speaker 1: Can I tell you that's how that punk gun out
- 29:01Speaker 1: there we bought from Rock Island?
- 29:03Speaker 5: Okay, Okay. So they're going to auction the guns off
- 29:07Speaker 5: and the money is going to be divided between certain
- 29:12Speaker 5: conservational organizations that protect or restore habitat.
- 29:17Speaker 1: Are you guys fixing the auction them as a block
- 29:19Speaker 1: to a single buyer because people don't want to break
- 29:22Speaker 1: them up?
- 29:22Speaker 10: Right?
- 29:22Speaker 1: That's I think that if you right now, we're about
- 29:27Speaker 1: to make that decision for sure, But more than likely
- 29:29Speaker 1: they're going to be sold as a set only, because
- 29:31Speaker 1: if you buy a single gun, the set's not worth
- 29:33Speaker 1: as much. What do you think it'll go for?
- 29:35Speaker 5: You know, it depends if you find the right guy
- 29:37Speaker 5: who realizes that anything over the appraised value.
- 29:40Speaker 1: And I'm not sure what they'll praise for. They could
- 29:42Speaker 1: have praised for a million, they could have praised for
- 29:45Speaker 1: a million and a half. I'm not sure. You can't.
- 29:48Speaker 5: You can't build them anymore. That the fourteen and twenty
- 29:50Speaker 5: eight will never be built again, So that person could
- 29:55Speaker 5: come in there and say, well, look, anything over and
- 29:56Speaker 5: above that I get to write off because all this
- 29:59Speaker 5: money is going to observation. So it might be two million,
- 30:03Speaker 5: five million, ten million. Maybe Stephen Ronnello will jump forward
- 30:07Speaker 5: and do something with all that money that's under his.
- 30:11Speaker 1: I don't know that he will.
- 30:14Speaker 5: So anyway, it's all about habitat, it's about responing. And
- 30:17Speaker 5: I love the grasslands. Just to think about the world
- 30:21Speaker 5: that I read about in your book, in the Buffalo,
- 30:24Speaker 5: your unbelievable book. I just couldn't put it down. But
- 30:28Speaker 5: the story of of all of that that was Buffalo
- 30:32Speaker 5: and the animals before him, and the grasslands and the
- 30:34Speaker 5: tall grass and the short grass, and the prairie chickens,
- 30:37Speaker 5: and they were they were thick like mosquitoes. And and
- 30:40Speaker 5: the fact that we've lost so much of that we've
- 30:42Speaker 5: got we got to keep that. That's that's the heartbeat
- 30:46Speaker 5: of the United States.
- 30:47Speaker 1: When's that action going to happen?
- 30:49Speaker 4: Uh?
- 30:49Speaker 1: Probably December of twenty five. You got to remind us
- 30:55Speaker 1: when you do it. Okay, I'd love to. Maybe we
- 30:57Speaker 1: can do a little thing where it follows along. Sure
- 31:00Speaker 1: that auction happens. It's like a pretty discreet period of time, right,
- 31:02Speaker 1: It's not like open forbidding for months or something.
- 31:05Speaker 5: Rock Island is the masters at that, and I'm not
- 31:08Speaker 5: going to run their show. They know exactly how they're
- 31:10Speaker 5: going to go about doing it.
- 31:12Speaker 1: Man, if you remember, let us know, it'd be fun
- 31:13Speaker 1: to do a little something about that. Yeah, have you
- 31:16Speaker 1: shot muscols guns?
- 31:17Speaker 5: Oh yeah, I've killed white tailed deer sixteen gage buckshot,
- 31:24Speaker 5: you know, rough growl, sharp tails. You know you name turkeys, ducks.
- 31:31Speaker 1: I've shot them all.
- 31:32Speaker 3: That's cool that you use them actually and put it
- 31:35Speaker 3: away Field.
- 31:36Speaker 5: I got a phone full of gorgeous pictures. You killed
- 31:39Speaker 5: merge quail in Arizona, and you put that male merge
- 31:42Speaker 5: right next to those hammers. The hammers have pretty dragons
- 31:45Speaker 5: on them. When the hammers fall, the dragon breeze fire.
- 31:52Speaker 5: It's cool.
- 31:53Speaker 1: So Corey, talk about your experience, how you know, will.
- 31:57Speaker 11: Well, let's see, I landed a job on a elk
- 32:00Speaker 11: cotton ranch north of town here back in twenty fourteen
- 32:06Speaker 11: and was offered to guide the next September, And growing
- 32:11Speaker 11: up always watched Primos The Truth, Big Bulls one through
- 32:16Speaker 11: fourteen or whatever we were at that year. And yeah,
- 32:19Speaker 11: I was offered to guide Will's friend that was coming along,
- 32:23Speaker 11: Mike ellig who used to own black gold archery sites.
- 32:26Speaker 11: So I got to guide Mike. I think we got
- 32:28Speaker 11: a nice bowl on day.
- 32:30Speaker 1: No, you don't take you know.
- 32:33Speaker 11: He scored three sixty three. He was an eight x ten.
- 32:38Speaker 1: I think I got one. It was a beautiful bowl.
- 32:41Speaker 11: But then your guide had to do something the next day,
- 32:44Speaker 11: and I was offered to take you out, which was
- 32:46Speaker 11: kind of a dream come true. Honestly, Oh man, we
- 32:48Speaker 11: had fun, we did. Yeah, I think we hunted that afternoon.
- 32:51Speaker 1: Was he whining and moaning the whole time, you know,
- 32:54Speaker 1: talking bad about old buddy.
- 32:57Speaker 11: We had a big bowl on a ridge above you,
- 33:00Speaker 11: and I tried backing up as far as I could
- 33:02Speaker 11: and tried calling him in, and the bowl had forty
- 33:04Speaker 11: fifty cows with him and never never would leave his cows.
- 33:08Speaker 11: And I remember after this, I think it was after
- 33:10Speaker 11: the sun went down. It just, you know, that didn't
- 33:11Speaker 11: work out. The planets didn't a line, as I like
- 33:13Speaker 11: to say. You came back to me and you said, no,
- 33:15Speaker 11: you should have done this instead, And you know, learn
- 33:18Speaker 11: from your mistakes, and definitely learned from those who have
- 33:21Speaker 11: done it.
- 33:22Speaker 1: You remember what I told you you should have done.
- 33:24Speaker 11: There's something with a bugle like you grabbed a bugle
- 33:26Speaker 11: from me. It was still around my neck, and you
- 33:28Speaker 11: said you should have wailed on it like this instead,
- 33:30Speaker 11: because I think I might've been being a little too
- 33:32Speaker 11: soft or something less aggressive.
- 33:36Speaker 1: Should I just just a frustration.
- 33:39Speaker 11: I mean we were both fired up still that it
- 33:41Speaker 11: didn't work out. Adrenaline was still rolling. And then I
- 33:44Speaker 11: remember we had a pretty solid hike back up to
- 33:46Speaker 11: the truck after that.
- 33:48Speaker 1: Yeah, and now's your day with will Primos.
- 33:50Speaker 11: Well, and then the next day we went out and
- 33:52Speaker 11: by eight thirty in the morning had a nice six
- 33:54Speaker 11: point down.
- 33:55Speaker 1: Oh really Yeah, so you guys got together. Yeah, yeah,
- 33:57Speaker 1: that was pretty cool. That's fun.
- 33:59Speaker 11: Mary and I got to do the calling. We backed
- 34:02Speaker 11: up about eight.
- 34:03Speaker 5: My wife is a really good elk caller, and one
- 34:06Speaker 5: time she called this elk up and my friend Brad
- 34:08Speaker 5: Fast killed it and I was one hundred and fifty
- 34:10Speaker 5: yards above and watching her. I'm going I just shut
- 34:12Speaker 5: up and let her do it. And she was throwing
- 34:14Speaker 5: rocks down the hill and doing all kind of make
- 34:17Speaker 5: it all kind of racket and then she get on
- 34:19Speaker 5: that dead, gumb that the open read hyperlip single, God
- 34:26Speaker 5: the heck is that? And that elk came in there
- 34:29Speaker 5: going crazy and Brad shoots him at ten yards. He
- 34:32Speaker 5: walks over and falls dead. And I walk up to
- 34:34Speaker 5: the mirror. I said, Mary, what did you say to him?
- 34:39Speaker 5: And she said, will I know what y'all are thinking?
- 34:49Speaker 1: You know, there's like this thing, like this little rule
- 34:53Speaker 1: for getting along with people socially. You don't talk about politics,
- 34:56Speaker 1: you don't talk about religion. You're pretty open about your
- 34:59Speaker 1: spiritual life.
- 35:00Speaker 5: Oh gosh, I love the Lord, I love I am.
- 35:03Speaker 1: I am.
- 35:04Speaker 5: I'm a believer in Jesus Christ. He is my in,
- 35:06Speaker 5: my rock, in my guide.
- 35:09Speaker 1: And there's just no way that wasn't going to be
- 35:11Speaker 1: part of your public persona, because I.
- 35:15Speaker 5: Mean, God knows, I know you. I mean, you know
- 35:17Speaker 5: what lightning is. You know, he knows I know better
- 35:23Speaker 5: you know.
- 35:23Speaker 1: But you lived by your walk.
- 35:25Speaker 10: You know.
- 35:25Speaker 5: And not everybody you meet as a Christian or wants
- 35:28Speaker 5: to be or is in climb. That's that's fine, that's
- 35:31Speaker 5: their choice, That's what God gave us, his choice. But
- 35:33Speaker 5: I'm good, you know, yeah, never never any hesitation, none?
- 35:37Speaker 1: Yeah? Yeah, what what year was the first truth, well,
- 35:42Speaker 1: the first truth that.
- 35:46Speaker 5: Six eighty seventh.
- 35:47Speaker 9: And when when you guys decided to make that, was
- 35:49Speaker 9: it like we're going to see what happens.
- 35:52Speaker 5: Or was this in just no, let's see what happens.
- 35:56Speaker 5: We don't know what we're doing. Yeah, the equipment wasn't good.
- 35:59Speaker 5: We had a back you had a real to reel.
- 36:01Speaker 5: You had to set the thing down on the ground
- 36:03Speaker 5: and get it going out a wire, and had a camera.
- 36:06Speaker 5: The stuff wasn't in the camera, it was on another backpack.
- 36:10Speaker 5: He weighed about eighty five pounds to carry all the equipment,
- 36:13Speaker 5: and you had to get to the where you were
- 36:14Speaker 5: going to go and set it down and get ready
- 36:16Speaker 5: and hope the turkey was.
- 36:17Speaker 1: Still around by the time.
- 36:21Speaker 5: And then climbing a tree.
- 36:22Speaker 3: You know, we always just for Why did you guys
- 36:25Speaker 3: hire like professional camera guys.
- 36:27Speaker 5: Oh no, no, no, no, no no, we hired hunters.
- 36:29Speaker 5: You've got to have a hunter behind that. He's got
- 36:32Speaker 5: to tell that story through that lens, and only a
- 36:35Speaker 5: hunter can do that.
- 36:39Speaker 1: Music to sess ears, Yeah, listen, man, this is like
- 36:43Speaker 1: you're you're touching on the thing that we've that Jannis
- 36:45Speaker 1: and I have spent an incredible amount of time discussing
- 36:49Speaker 1: is and this is a real riddle. I appreciate that
- 36:52Speaker 1: you feel like you got the code cracked, but I
- 36:54Speaker 1: don't know. I think that this is whype be one
- 36:56Speaker 1: of those areas where you and I don't necessarily align.
- 36:59Speaker 5: Okay, you're wrong and not right, but that's okay. You
- 37:05Speaker 5: can teach a hunter to be a cameraman, but you
- 37:09Speaker 5: cannot teach a cameraman to be a hunters necessary.
- 37:17Speaker 1: That has not necessarily been my finding.
- 37:19Speaker 5: Okay, uh.
- 37:23Speaker 1: In the we agree on this, in the best case scenario,
- 37:28Speaker 1: you have In the best case scenario, you have a
- 37:31Speaker 1: lifelong cameraman who's a lifelong hunter and observer of wildlife.
- 37:36Speaker 1: Everyone would agree. Everyone would agree that's the best case scenario.
- 37:46Speaker 1: I have found examples of both. There are really good cameramen,
- 37:51Speaker 1: like the kind of camera and you'd want to call
- 37:52Speaker 1: like a cinematographer okay, right, who never can get used
- 37:57Speaker 1: to animals. They don't know how to behave around animals.
- 38:00Speaker 1: They can't get used to animals. But there are some
- 38:03Speaker 1: there are some individuals out there that I've worked with
- 38:06Speaker 1: over the years, and I don't want to and I
- 38:08Speaker 1: gotta say this because if they they probably won't listen
- 38:11Speaker 1: to this. But in case they do. Rick Smith, Chris Gill,
- 38:18Speaker 1: No Fallon Gartt Garrett, Gary Smith grew up on Yeah yeah,
- 38:24Speaker 1: but not like not like we did. These are some examples.
- 38:30Speaker 1: These are outliers. Perhaps these are examples of people who
- 38:35Speaker 1: came to their world of cinematography being a DP, director
- 38:40Speaker 1: of photography, camera guy whatever. They came to it from
- 38:44Speaker 1: a world of appreciation for like appreciation for the arts,
- 38:48Speaker 1: being very schooled and cinema history, getting formally educated in
- 38:53Speaker 1: camera work and like majoring and that stuff in college,
- 38:57Speaker 1: and after a short time in the field, got it okay.
- 39:02Speaker 1: Like when you say, if I go, don't move, these
- 39:07Speaker 1: guys don't move, okay, ma'am. They at least understand. I
- 39:13Speaker 1: have had to sit with I've this is something I've
- 39:16Speaker 1: literally done. I've literally say out with the camera guy
- 39:18Speaker 1: before Turkey Hunt, and I want to go like, I'm
- 39:20Speaker 1: gonna show you. I'm gonna sit here and I'm gonna
- 39:23Speaker 1: show you what not moving looks like, because apparently apparently
- 39:30Speaker 1: there's different understandings of what not moving looks like. And
- 39:34Speaker 1: I'd be like, this is not moving, that's not moving.
- 39:41Speaker 1: You think not moving is this? I get it. Not
- 39:49Speaker 1: moving is right and it can be learned, And I think,
- 39:54Speaker 1: but what. At the same time, you could grow up
- 39:56Speaker 1: being a great hunter like okay or just let I
- 39:59Speaker 1: don't want to say great, you grew up being an
- 40:00Speaker 1: avid hunter. I want to be able to roll myself
- 40:03Speaker 1: into this without claiming to be a great hunter. You
- 40:05Speaker 1: grew up being an avid hunter. I still, this is
- 40:08Speaker 1: not a joke. I would not know how to turn
- 40:11Speaker 1: this camera on. I honestly wouldn't know how to turn
- 40:14Speaker 1: it on. I probably wouldn't either. No, I've done it,
- 40:18Speaker 1: but I probably wouldn't know. I took when I was
- 40:20Speaker 1: in regular college. I took black and white photography one,
- 40:26Speaker 1: black and white photography two and struggled. I know how
- 40:31Speaker 1: to wield the English language. I do not know how
- 40:34Speaker 1: to work with images, right, So.
- 40:41Speaker 5: We answer to all that. Bottom line, we had a trademark.
- 40:45Speaker 5: This ain't Hollywood, so we're not trying to win a
- 40:49Speaker 5: cinematography award. We're trying to share with the public what happens.
- 40:53Speaker 5: And the problem you have with people who aren't hunters
- 40:56Speaker 5: is they can't anticipate yes, and if they can't, they're
- 41:00Speaker 5: gonna miss something that really needed to be seen by
- 41:03Speaker 5: the viewer.
- 41:04Speaker 1: But Okay, it's good. We're good. No, we're good. But
- 41:08Speaker 1: but I don't want to I don't want you to
- 41:10Speaker 1: think by me using the term cinematography, I don't want
- 41:13Speaker 1: you to think that I'm talking about people who are
- 41:15Speaker 1: trying to arts stuff up. If you talk to these guys,
- 41:20Speaker 1: they don't talk about they're not like, oh, it's not beautiful.
- 41:23Speaker 1: It's not that they talk about coverage. Right, Like you
- 41:28Speaker 1: could be trained in photography, trained as a camera guy, whatever,
- 41:32Speaker 1: that that doesn't mean that you're like focused on that.
- 41:37Speaker 1: You're focused on that. You think you're gonna set everything
- 41:39Speaker 1: up with the setting sun and the fog and right,
- 41:42Speaker 1: it's like coverage, did you get coverage? Meaning? Uh, can
- 41:49Speaker 1: you fill the scene out? Right? And they have a
- 41:52Speaker 1: people like these guys at the right training and right experience,
- 41:56Speaker 1: they understand they can picture. You're to get out of
- 42:00Speaker 1: your truck. You're gonna walk in the dark, You're gonna
- 42:05Speaker 1: kind of arrive at a place. You're gonna hear a gobble, right,
- 42:09Speaker 1: You're gonna find where to set up. You're gonna get
- 42:12Speaker 1: set up. You're gonna not like it. You're gonna get
- 42:14Speaker 1: set up again, you're gonna get your stuff out, you're
- 42:17Speaker 1: gonna write, and every little single part of that, they
- 42:22Speaker 1: got a part of it. When you're watching something that's
- 42:25Speaker 1: that's not great, maybe you got like the lights coming
- 42:29Speaker 1: on when you open the truck door and the next
- 42:31Speaker 1: thing there's a guy sitting on a tree. You missed
- 42:33Speaker 1: a bunch, Yeah, because you didn't get coverage and that
- 42:38Speaker 1: knowledge of coverage. I just don't want to be hacking on.
- 42:41Speaker 1: I don't want to be hacking on. I get it,
- 42:43Speaker 1: I get it. I once was listening to an interview
- 42:45Speaker 1: with Ralph Stanley, the bluegrass musician. He won't play with
- 42:49Speaker 1: college kids. He says, college kids don't understand blue grass.
- 42:53Speaker 1: You don't want to play with college kids, or something
- 42:55Speaker 1: to that effect. And I'm like, you know, that's funny
- 42:58Speaker 1: hacking on college kids. But there's a pretty good college
- 43:00Speaker 1: kid camera guys out there.
- 43:01Speaker 5: Oh yeah, yeah, I get you.
- 43:03Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 43:04Speaker 3: I do agree with anticipation.
- 43:07Speaker 9: Like I filmed with Steve a bunch in the field,
- 43:10Speaker 9: and I'm like to the point now where I can
- 43:14Speaker 9: something changes with him where I'm like, okay, like I
- 43:18Speaker 9: need to get ready to get some sort of shot here,
- 43:21Speaker 9: you know.
- 43:22Speaker 1: Yeah. Well there's also a part he didn't mention is
- 43:24Speaker 1: that I have to look at him to see if
- 43:26Speaker 1: that was actually a gobble. Yeah. So Bratt Brad Ferrish
- 43:31Speaker 1: was the was the master at being able to anticipate
- 43:34Speaker 1: it and get over the shoulder stuff. Yeah, absolutely magical.
- 43:39Speaker 1: But I like you. I like your word choice anticipate. Yeah.
- 43:43Speaker 5: But one time the Outdoor Channel, we were the rated
- 43:46Speaker 5: number one on the Outdoor Channel, and they came to
- 43:49Speaker 5: see us. They came all the entourage, about four of them,
- 43:52Speaker 5: came to our office and sat down and said, Okay,
- 43:54Speaker 5: y'all have got to change some things. Let's look at
- 43:57Speaker 5: this footage. Look at so that right here. You've got
- 44:00Speaker 5: to change that airplane has no business being in your footage.
- 44:04Speaker 1: Here. What airplane?
- 44:06Speaker 5: This airplane flew?
- 44:07Speaker 1: Oh, just some random airplane. Yeah, okay.
- 44:09Speaker 5: And the gobbler was goblin and got shot while the
- 44:12Speaker 5: airplane was and then we looked at him and go
- 44:18Speaker 5: just reshoot it and get some other ambient sound and
- 44:22Speaker 5: edit the airplane out.
- 44:24Speaker 1: Okay.
- 44:25Speaker 5: And look, I don't think we're gonna be number one
- 44:27Speaker 5: much longer. We're gonna keep doing what we do. Because
- 44:32Speaker 5: of the feedback we get from the public that says,
- 44:34Speaker 5: thank you, thank you for not reenacting scenes.
- 44:38Speaker 1: Gotcha, you know.
- 44:39Speaker 5: And the first time I saw a guy killing elk
- 44:43Speaker 5: on video that was reenacted, he walked up with the
- 44:48Speaker 5: camera here the elk in the middle, and the guy
- 44:51Speaker 5: walking up and finding the elk.
- 44:53Speaker 1: You didn't like. That's bs. They all knew it was there.
- 44:57Speaker 1: It wasn't original. We won't. You don't do that.
- 45:00Speaker 5: You get behind the guy and you you get what
- 45:03Speaker 5: you get.
- 45:03Speaker 1: Yep. You fill it up with what really happened, and
- 45:07Speaker 1: if you fall down, you show it and you get
- 45:11Speaker 1: to laugh, which I've done, which we are going down
- 45:14Speaker 1: a steep invitment and end up with your.
- 45:18Speaker 5: Self in the water and all messed up, and you
- 45:20Speaker 5: know you show it.
- 45:22Speaker 1: Fine? Yeah, Hey, what do you think makes a good hunter?
- 45:25Speaker 5: What makes a good hunter?
- 45:26Speaker 1: Yeah, nothing to do with camera guys. But what do
- 45:28Speaker 1: you think makes a good hunter? Oh?
- 45:30Speaker 5: Somebody that realizes what patience is and giving things time
- 45:34Speaker 5: to happen, not trying to force it.
- 45:36Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, you do? You do? You subscribe to that
- 45:41Speaker 1: Turkey hunting philosophy. If you think you ought to do something, don't.
- 45:46Speaker 5: That that's that's fifty percent of the time.
- 45:48Speaker 1: That's what time you do do it. Yeah, you do
- 45:54Speaker 1: it anyway, but you like the idea that you should
- 45:58Speaker 1: at least double quite yes, question the impulse, Yes, sir.
- 46:04Speaker 1: What's your favorite thing? You know is Turkey's your favorite?
- 46:08Speaker 1: I always think of you as that. I imagine you'd be.
- 46:10Speaker 1: You like turkeys. Turkeys and elk.
- 46:11Speaker 5: I'm glad they don't come at the same time of year.
- 46:14Speaker 5: But in this stage of my life upland hunting. That's
- 46:17Speaker 5: what got me into the shooting of sporting clays, and uh,
- 46:21Speaker 5: I wanted to get better at shooting upland birds. There
- 46:24Speaker 5: were certain crossers that I would not shoot will primos,
- 46:28Speaker 5: if that dove or that duck was coming left to
- 46:32Speaker 5: right because the way the winds we had to set
- 46:34Speaker 5: up and the way the wind was on the on
- 46:36Speaker 5: the blind or whatever. I learned not to shoot at him.
- 46:38Speaker 1: I want to go hit him. Yeah, well, what the
- 46:40Speaker 1: hell you still shoot?
- 46:42Speaker 5: You know, I mean, thirty forty fifty you just set
- 46:44Speaker 5: the shot out. I mean, I just, I just I
- 46:47Speaker 5: just wanted to go shoot at him. Would I want't
- 46:49Speaker 5: gonna hit him?
- 46:50Speaker 1: And so I would. I started shooting for the Claye
- 46:53Speaker 1: because I wanted to go to these people who knew
- 46:56Speaker 1: how to shoot this stuff and teach me this is good?
- 46:59Speaker 1: Can we the it's a good chance to talk about sure,
- 47:02Speaker 1: so kind of the reason I've always wanted to have
- 47:04Speaker 1: you on, and we've talked about having you on over
- 47:07Speaker 1: the years for various things. But what allowed it to happen? Now?
- 47:10Speaker 1: What the reason you're sitting here is you sent me
- 47:12Speaker 1: an email about a book you worked on. I'm sorry,
- 47:18Speaker 1: I'm not can you pronounce your your partners, your your
- 47:22Speaker 1: buddy's name?
- 47:22Speaker 5: Anthony Matisse.
- 47:24Speaker 1: Matteris so Will sent me an email about a book
- 47:27Speaker 1: he's got that's available now, Straight Shooting for Hunters, a
- 47:31Speaker 1: champions guide to using shotguns in the field. And it's
- 47:35Speaker 1: by Will and Anthony Mattie. And the significance of that
- 47:40Speaker 1: is here we have a lifelong hunter who knows the
- 47:45Speaker 1: challenges of being in the field, knows the challenges of
- 47:47Speaker 1: making real shots in the field on stuff that you
- 47:50Speaker 1: got to not just nick but kill. And Anthony is
- 47:53Speaker 1: a competitive.
- 47:55Speaker 5: Shooter and a hardcore hunter also hard lives to duck hunt.
- 47:59Speaker 1: Okay, so Will. The premise of the book is to
- 48:03Speaker 1: take technical shooting expertise and the dos and don'ts of
- 48:11Speaker 1: shooting and apply it in real world scenarios so that
- 48:15Speaker 1: when you sit there like you're saying, and the wind's
- 48:17Speaker 1: blowing left to right and the bird's coming right to left,
- 48:20Speaker 1: that doesn't mean that you've got to not shoot.
- 48:21Speaker 5: Yeah, the nuances of the game of sporting clays is incredible.
- 48:25Speaker 5: And by sporting clayes, I mean shooting stuff that's flying
- 48:28Speaker 5: through the air. Okay, for instance, I'm behind a setter,
- 48:33Speaker 5: a pointer Germany short air their own point, and I'm moving.
- 48:37Speaker 1: Up to the side of the dogs.
- 48:39Speaker 5: The dogs got a view of me where you hold
- 48:41Speaker 5: that gun, where that gun starts from, because you're going
- 48:44Speaker 5: to be low gun, You're going to have to mount
- 48:45Speaker 5: that gun.
- 48:46Speaker 1: And then where your eyes are.
- 48:47Speaker 5: Your eyes can come back to focus one hundred thousand
- 48:52Speaker 5: I forget what the exact number is, but let's just
- 48:54Speaker 5: use one hundred thousand times faster than your eyes can.
- 48:57Speaker 1: Go out to focus. Keep back up and say that
- 49:00Speaker 1: again your brought us up there. I'm on a thing.
- 49:03Speaker 1: I'm on a kicking life where when someone tells me
- 49:06Speaker 1: something I don't understand, instead of going Huh, that's great,
- 49:09Speaker 1: I go like, no, I don't understand so and that
- 49:12Speaker 1: doesn't mean they need to re explain it, okay, so
- 49:15Speaker 1: it allows room for explanation.
- 49:17Speaker 5: Quail or right here at this door, which is approximate,
- 49:20Speaker 5: and lay ten feet away from me, and that dog's
- 49:23Speaker 5: pointing right there.
- 49:24Speaker 1: Well, rather than look right there, I want to look
- 49:27Speaker 1: over and beyond at about fifty yards in soft focus,
- 49:32Speaker 1: so you know, like you know the birds there because
- 49:34Speaker 1: the dog's telling you. And instead of staring at the
- 49:36Speaker 1: brush like you see it.
- 49:38Speaker 5: Here, So the quail could be here here, here, here,
- 49:40Speaker 5: it could be anywhere, because the dog's got the scent
- 49:43Speaker 5: and you don't know if that they've run off and
- 49:45Speaker 5: stopped again or what. You don't know exactly where they are,
- 49:47Speaker 5: but you know about So don't try to look and
- 49:50Speaker 5: see the quail and see where where they're going to
- 49:52Speaker 5: come from. Look over them and beyond them, say fifty yards.
- 49:56Speaker 1: Well, if you're look at how you're ever going to
- 49:58Speaker 1: just hold them right out of the bushes, all right, smarty,
- 50:03Speaker 1: So your eyes come back to focus so much faster
- 50:08Speaker 1: than out to focus.
- 50:09Speaker 5: So if I'm looking and solve focus and the quail rise,
- 50:12Speaker 5: my eyes come back and see the flash. My eyes
- 50:15Speaker 5: come back and grab the flash. Now, I don't look
- 50:18Speaker 5: at the quail. I look at his beak, I look
- 50:21Speaker 5: at his head. I look at you can. Some guys
- 50:24Speaker 5: are really good at being able to shoot only male
- 50:26Speaker 5: bob whites rather than just fifty fifty it because they're
- 50:29Speaker 5: looking that intensely and they pick out that bird. And
- 50:33Speaker 5: then your hands. Your eyes tell your brain where your
- 50:38Speaker 5: hands go. It's no different than baseball. You don't look
- 50:43Speaker 5: at the bat. You look at the ball, and that's
- 50:47Speaker 5: all you look at when you're throwing a football.
- 50:50Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a good point, man.
- 50:51Speaker 5: Yeah, when you're throwing a football and the guy's running,
- 50:54Speaker 5: you're not looking at the ball. You're looking at the runner,
- 50:57Speaker 5: and you're deciding how fast you gotta throw, how far
- 51:00Speaker 5: you've got to throw it, at what angle you've got
- 51:03Speaker 5: to throw it so it will drop into the receiver's hands.
- 51:05Speaker 5: Your brain calculates all that, and through repetition in practice,
- 51:09Speaker 5: which is what sportingclays gives you, you learn to be
- 51:12Speaker 5: able to execute that subconsciously. And so you become subconscious
- 51:16Speaker 5: when that quail is down there, your eyes look out
- 51:18Speaker 5: that you're ready, and you move and shoot and you're
- 51:21Speaker 5: much more effective. And there's different techniques. Let's just say
- 51:25Speaker 5: it's dove hunting or duck hunting. You've got what's called
- 51:29Speaker 5: swing through, and here's you start behind the bird and
- 51:33Speaker 5: you move past the bird. Your brain, you match speeds
- 51:36Speaker 5: with the bird. Then you move your gun slightly ahead
- 51:39Speaker 5: to the lead, and your brain tells you that's it, and.
- 51:41Speaker 1: You pull the trigger.
- 51:41Speaker 5: Yep, that's technique one yeah, that's one yeah. And then
- 51:45Speaker 5: you've got maintained leads because of what the how far
- 51:48Speaker 5: it was, whatever, You mount in front of the target,
- 51:52Speaker 5: match speeds with the target, and then.
- 51:54Speaker 1: Pull the trigger. That's my technique. Is that bad?
- 51:56Speaker 5: Not necessarily, But if you can learn the all three techniques,
- 52:00Speaker 5: you know, if you can learn how to swing through,
- 52:03Speaker 5: how to maintain lead, and how to mount, own the
- 52:06Speaker 5: bird and stretch it all three, you will be a
- 52:09Speaker 5: much better shot because they all come at different times
- 52:11Speaker 5: that you should apply depending on a distance, angle, and speed.
- 52:16Speaker 5: So how how far it is? You know how fast
- 52:19Speaker 5: it is, and you know, uh and the angle is
- 52:23Speaker 5: it a quarter?
- 52:23Speaker 1: Is it straight away? Is it going straight up? What
- 52:26Speaker 1: is it?
- 52:26Speaker 7: So?
- 52:28Speaker 5: I mean, I've gotten I've gotten crazy about this game.
- 52:30Speaker 5: Anthony Matterez helped me tremendously. I went up there and
- 52:33Speaker 5: took lessons as part of this book. I took lessons
- 52:35Speaker 5: from him and carry luft Our editor stood behind me
- 52:39Speaker 5: and videoed everything that was said. I've got the videos
- 52:42Speaker 5: of Anthony Saytan, will you don't trust yourself? Will You're
- 52:46Speaker 5: not look you're you're stepping up to the plate and
- 52:49Speaker 5: you've You've gone to the prom and you've got a date.
- 52:51Speaker 1: She's what you got. You know you ain't gonna find
- 52:55Speaker 1: another one.
- 52:57Speaker 5: And it's just amazing the analogies that he use to
- 53:00Speaker 5: be able to help me understand how to properly move
- 53:02Speaker 5: a shotgun. But I've made friends with Givin Miles from
- 53:06Speaker 5: Arizona and his wife carrying both world champions, Bill Maguire
- 53:10Speaker 5: from Tennessee World champion. I mean, these guys are so
- 53:13Speaker 5: much fun and they're so great and they're all very accomplished.
- 53:17Speaker 5: And when I went to Anthony, he wrote a book
- 53:19Speaker 5: called Straight Shooting one hundred dollars Coffee table book. And
- 53:22Speaker 5: I went to him and said, when you signed my book,
- 53:24Speaker 5: and he said, will I'll be glad to sign your book?
- 53:27Speaker 1: I went, how's he no mon name.
- 53:30Speaker 5: He turns out he's a duck hunter and all he
- 53:32Speaker 5: uses is the witch. Yeah, so he and his brother
- 53:35Speaker 5: are big witch callers that they hunt. They live on
- 53:38Speaker 5: Delaware Bay on the river there and they hunt every day.
- 53:41Speaker 5: They're crazy. And so he called me the next day.
- 53:45Speaker 5: I said, how'd he get my number?
- 53:47Speaker 1: You know what kind of deal?
- 53:48Speaker 5: He actually emailed me and I said, how do you
- 53:50Speaker 5: get my email? And he says, call me sometime. I
- 53:53Speaker 5: adn't mailing him back. I said, is now a good time?
- 53:55Speaker 1: He said sure. I called him.
- 53:56Speaker 5: He said, let's write a book together. I said, okay,
- 54:00Speaker 5: what are we gonna write a book about? He goes
- 54:02Speaker 5: about you learning how to shoot?
- 54:06Speaker 1: Well, you know that eye trick. That's great. I never
- 54:08Speaker 1: heard that eye trick with birds, like I am absolutely
- 54:11Speaker 1: try it dissecting the sage brush or whatever. Being like,
- 54:15Speaker 1: I'm gonna see that try I'm gonna look for that sucker.
- 54:17Speaker 1: What are your eyes doing in the duck bline?
- 54:20Speaker 5: Oh well, it depends on whether you're the one who's
- 54:22Speaker 5: controlling the blind or not. If you are not the
- 54:25Speaker 5: coller just gonna call the shots. You're not doing the colling. No,
- 54:28Speaker 5: you're looking down hopefully you're seeing the reflection in the water. Mate,
- 54:31Speaker 5: you're watching the collar. You're you're hiding. That's the worst
- 54:36Speaker 5: thing waterfowlers do is they don't hide, and the ducks
- 54:40Speaker 5: see something they don't like. Maybe circle one more time. Whatever,
- 54:43Speaker 5: you know, you gotta hide, so.
- 54:45Speaker 1: So you'll you're content to miss the show.
- 54:47Speaker 5: If you're not, you have to be if you want
- 54:49Speaker 5: to get good shots, okay, because you're screw up putting
- 54:52Speaker 5: your big old white face out there. You know, we
- 54:54Speaker 5: wearing masks and stuff like that. But they see movement you.
- 54:58Speaker 5: It's best to have something over you.
- 55:00Speaker 1: So when you go to make the shot on a mallard,
- 55:02Speaker 1: are you you're looking at a part of the mallard?
- 55:05Speaker 12: Right?
- 55:05Speaker 5: Oh yeah, It depends on the shot. If he's coming
- 55:07Speaker 5: into decoys, I'm I'm naming at his feet because he's
- 55:11Speaker 5: coming down. If he's let and now he's rising, you know,
- 55:14Speaker 5: I'm I'm just mounting right on the duck and moving
- 55:18Speaker 5: my gun slightly above his head, just like maybe an inch,
- 55:21Speaker 5: trying to shoot him right, you know, just as as
- 55:24Speaker 5: he moved. Depends on the steep.
- 55:25Speaker 1: Whether it's a teal that's real fast and rising, if
- 55:30Speaker 1: the duck's crossing.
- 55:31Speaker 5: It depends on the speed. George Digweed is the twenty
- 55:36Speaker 5: eight time world champion from England. He's won the World champion,
- 55:42Speaker 5: Anthony's won everything. Uh, George has won the world, especially
- 55:46Speaker 5: in Hungary and in Dubai and all over the place.
- 55:50Speaker 4: Uh.
- 55:51Speaker 5: And I just went to England and took lessons shot
- 55:54Speaker 5: a day with George Digweed and the guys. He's he's
- 55:58Speaker 5: he doesn't know what he does.
- 55:59Speaker 1: He's so good.
- 56:00Speaker 5: He's incredible, he's incredible.
- 56:02Speaker 1: He primarily uses swing through.
- 56:05Speaker 5: He starts behind the bird, gets perfectly online and comes
- 56:08Speaker 5: through the bird and for ninety five percent of his shots.
- 56:15Speaker 5: But there's just just so wonderful studying this and understanding.
- 56:17Speaker 5: But writing that book, you know, with with with Carrie
- 56:21Speaker 5: and Anthony was incredible because I have now I now
- 56:26Speaker 5: don't have any excuses.
- 56:28Speaker 1: That's the deal. Well, yeah, because now you wrote a
- 56:30Speaker 1: book about it. Yeah, it's gonna be embarrassing when you miss.
- 56:33Speaker 1: Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah. I want to tell
- 56:35Speaker 1: you the worst shot for me, Maybe you can tell
- 56:37Speaker 1: me what the problem is. Darks come in you know whatever,
- 56:41Speaker 1: they're coming into decoys. Everybody shoots and then you get
- 56:44Speaker 1: the one that's like he's leaving, he's going up, he's
- 56:50Speaker 1: going right or left, and he's going over your shoulder.
- 56:54Speaker 1: So from my perspective, he's going Okay, that's hard. Okay. Now,
- 57:02Speaker 1: sometimes maybe he's already been hit a little bit to see,
- 57:04Speaker 1: especially when to here's the duck.
- 57:06Speaker 5: Okay, go in this mount right behind him and follow
- 57:10Speaker 5: his line, and when the gun passes his beak, pull
- 57:12Speaker 5: the trigger. The speed of the gun will give you
- 57:15Speaker 5: the lead. Mount own the duck, come right through and
- 57:19Speaker 5: that gives you the line. And move right through and
- 57:23Speaker 5: look at something on there. Look at his beak, look
- 57:25Speaker 5: at his feet through something. Don't look at the duck,
- 57:28Speaker 5: and do not look at the gun. It's just like
- 57:30Speaker 5: when you hit a baseball.
- 57:31Speaker 1: You're not looking at your bead at all.
- 57:33Speaker 5: No, no, Now, the only time you would do that,
- 57:39Speaker 5: The only time you would do that is if a
- 57:42Speaker 5: low flying bird is coming in and he's close to
- 57:45Speaker 5: the ground your gun. Your brain will confuse the dark
- 57:49Speaker 5: color of the you see the gun.
- 57:52Speaker 1: In your periphery.
- 57:53Speaker 5: I'm gonna use this analogy. It's like it's like merging
- 57:56Speaker 5: into traffic. You're not looking at your hood. You're looking
- 57:59Speaker 5: at the track, and so you're timing your speed of
- 58:03Speaker 5: your vehicle to either merge in front of a car
- 58:06Speaker 5: or right behind it. That's what you're doing with a
- 58:09Speaker 5: shot gun. You're taking your gun and you're matching speeds
- 58:12Speaker 5: with the bird and then slightly moving ahead to pull
- 58:15Speaker 5: the trigger that gives you the lead.
- 58:17Speaker 1: All these analogies you're using, like when you throw a ball,
- 58:20Speaker 1: you don't look at your arm. When you're driving your car,
- 58:22Speaker 1: you don't look at your car right.
- 58:25Speaker 6: No, listen, when I got to shoot a little bit
- 58:27Speaker 6: with an instructor in Latvia a couple of years ago.
- 58:30Speaker 6: Anytime I've shot with an instructor and I'm I first thing,
- 58:34Speaker 6: I'll tell him as well, not that good because I'm
- 58:36Speaker 6: left eye dominant and I shoot right handed. And this
- 58:39Speaker 6: guy he looked at me and goes, oh, So I
- 58:42Speaker 6: was like, well, still sometimes I like to close my
- 58:44Speaker 6: left eye. It helps me line everything up. And he goes, oh,
- 58:47Speaker 6: when you you play basketball at all?
- 58:49Speaker 3: I go, yeah, decent shot.
- 58:50Speaker 1: You know.
- 58:50Speaker 3: He goes, do you close one eye when you shoot
- 58:52Speaker 3: your basketball?
- 58:54Speaker 5: No?
- 58:55Speaker 1: You know, no, I just that yeah, so very very free.
- 59:01Speaker 5: People are a hundred percent left or right eye dominant,
- 59:05Speaker 5: and there's a there's a test to do that.
- 59:08Speaker 1: Did we show it in the book, so not to
- 59:10Speaker 1: this one. So if I'm looking at you, you know
- 59:14Speaker 1: no that that only shows you, which is okay. Because
- 59:20Speaker 1: this is an audio thing, there's a video component which
- 59:24Speaker 1: you can find What's Our What's.
- 59:25Speaker 10: Our Meat Eater podcast network on YouTube.
- 59:30Speaker 1: Make sure you hit the subscribe. It was also so
- 59:34Speaker 1: from the ever since I was a little boy. I
- 59:36Speaker 1: want to tell what Yanni did when I did like
- 59:38Speaker 1: my dad would say, as probably ninety percent of dads
- 59:41Speaker 1: in America would say to their kid if this question
- 59:44Speaker 1: comes up, they'd go when they're trying to ascertain if
- 59:47Speaker 1: their kid is right or left eye dominant, they go like, okay,
- 59:50Speaker 1: aim your thumb at me, close your eye and aim
- 59:53Speaker 1: your thumb at me right and I close my right
- 59:57Speaker 1: eye and then aim my and I'd take my left
- 59:59Speaker 1: eye and and my thumb at will and then they go,
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: left eye, donamant left eye dominant? Yohani did, uh. He
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: made a little he put his hands together and made
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: a little diamond between his What do you call that
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: the crook of your thumb?
- 1:00:12Speaker 10: I don't tell that is like a like a an
- 1:00:15Speaker 10: arrow pointing out.
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: Yeah, make the make it inverted.
- 1:00:18Speaker 5: I love you get as small as you can look.
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: Tighten her down, down down, So you got a little
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: aperture there and then aim that at someone.
- 1:00:25Speaker 5: Yeah, that tells you what you're most most likely to eat.
- 1:00:31Speaker 5: But the real test is like like like right now,
- 1:00:34Speaker 5: I am going to point at your right eye, okay,
- 1:00:38Speaker 5: and I want you to look and see where my
- 1:00:40Speaker 5: finger is and lined up on my eyes?
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: Where is it? Oh? Huh? What where is it? Where's
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: where is where is my finger in relation to my eyes?
- 1:00:48Speaker 3: On your right eye?
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: Okay? H where is it?
- 1:00:54Speaker 3: On your nose?
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: Will you? Guys will yelling at you? So you look
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: at his eyes when he points, say that very naturally.
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: If you see me to get off his land, I'd
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: probably get off his lamb.
- 1:01:06Speaker 5: So what you're doing is you're you're establishing how much dominant?
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: Do it to me? Because I don't understand huh, doud
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: do the same thing to me? I'm trying to understand
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: what he's seeing.
- 1:01:13Speaker 5: Okay, So I'm going to point. I'm gonna you're you're
- 1:01:17Speaker 5: trying to tell me. You're trying to tell me which
- 1:01:19Speaker 5: one of my eyes is dominant?
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: But I got both open. Oh yeah, you're closed. I
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: am too.
- 1:01:24Speaker 5: So I'm gonna point my finger at your right eye.
- 1:01:27Speaker 5: Where is my finger lined up.
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: On my face a little bit that way.
- 1:01:30Speaker 10: Of center, looks that way to the left, Steve.
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: Right eye, Will's right eye. I'm looking at you dead
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: eye with both my eyes. It's on the bridge of
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: your nose.
- 1:01:42Speaker 5: Should be my finger should be lined up with my
- 1:01:44Speaker 5: right eye. It's not right there.
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: It's dead nuts on the bridge your nose. Okay, now
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: now you got to you got two left eyes. Now
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: now I'm pointing my finger with both eyes with my
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: left hand. Now it says that way.
- 1:02:00Speaker 5: So what you're doing, you end up you end up
- 1:02:02Speaker 5: establishing somebody can be cross eye dominant and they get
- 1:02:06Speaker 5: their both.
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: So if it's on the middle of your bridge, you're
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: seeing with.
- 1:02:11Speaker 5: Both your eye, both your eyes. So that's that can
- 1:02:13Speaker 5: be very hard for a shooter because it's brains does
- 1:02:16Speaker 5: the brain doesn't know which eye to tell the hands
- 1:02:19Speaker 5: where to go. So when you have when you're when
- 1:02:22Speaker 5: you're dominant, you can be eighty percent dominant, ninety percent dominant. See,
- 1:02:26Speaker 5: so it's very important to establish that. So you should
- 1:02:31Speaker 5: establish that and One of the things you could do
- 1:02:33Speaker 5: if you wanted to do, You could put a dot
- 1:02:34Speaker 5: over your glasses. We talk about that in the book,
- 1:02:37Speaker 5: to barely obscure your dominant eye a little bit.
- 1:02:40Speaker 3: Yeah, I've done that.
- 1:02:41Speaker 5: Yeah, so that it makes your other eye your you're
- 1:02:43Speaker 5: said left eye, your your left eyes dominant.
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: But can we establish like a very basic thing you
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: it's true, this is true right like when you're when
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: you're wing shooting, there's no reason to be closed in
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: the eyes.
- 1:03:00Speaker 5: Well, I was going on to that, we got distracted
- 1:03:02Speaker 5: a little bit. So if the bird is loaded the
- 1:03:04Speaker 5: ground and coming in close, coming in right at you,
- 1:03:07Speaker 5: the brain can confuse the barrel. You're seeing the barrel
- 1:03:11Speaker 5: like the hood of your car. It's in your periphery.
- 1:03:13Speaker 5: You don't really see it, but your brain is going well,
- 1:03:17Speaker 5: and you think you're on the target and you miss, Well,
- 1:03:20Speaker 5: that's a that's a spot shot. That's a spot on
- 1:03:23Speaker 5: aim shot. You point it like a rifle. So for
- 1:03:26Speaker 5: a coming straight at you. A lot of times in sportingclays,
- 1:03:30Speaker 5: I was shutting my left eye because I want to
- 1:03:32Speaker 5: make sure my gun's pointing right at that. There's no
- 1:03:35Speaker 5: lead involved, you know.
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: God then you're aiming at like you're shooting a turkey.
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: That's right.
- 1:03:42Speaker 5: So there are instances, and Anthony talks about it in
- 1:03:45Speaker 5: his book Straight Shooting. He was a young guy, he
- 1:03:48Speaker 5: was doing really well. He was down in Florida shooting
- 1:03:51Speaker 5: in a major tournament, and I believe he shot. He came,
- 1:03:54Speaker 5: he tied for six, but he was he was winning.
- 1:03:57Speaker 5: And he got to the station with that low incoming
- 1:04:00Speaker 5: and Dan Carlisle was an Olympic champion bunker trap and
- 1:04:03Speaker 5: other disciplines, and he taught Anthony never to close the eye.
- 1:04:09Speaker 5: And Anthony went back.
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: He was tearful. I believe he was like eighteen years old.
- 1:04:14Speaker 5: He was tearful. He was gonna win this tournament and
- 1:04:17Speaker 5: he tied for six. He went home and thought about it,
- 1:04:21Speaker 5: thought about it, went back to this hotel, thought about it,
- 1:04:23Speaker 5: thought about it, and the next day he shot one
- 1:04:25Speaker 5: hundred straight. He figured out that he needed to squint
- 1:04:30Speaker 5: an eye or close it a little bit on these
- 1:04:32Speaker 5: incoming straight birds to be positive where his brain was
- 1:04:36Speaker 5: being told his gun was pointing.
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: Hmmm.
- 1:04:39Speaker 5: So there are disciplines and nuances within the game for
- 1:04:43Speaker 5: different stuff. Just like you said, that's the way I shoot,
- 1:04:45Speaker 5: you shoot and maintain lead. If you would mount on
- 1:04:48Speaker 5: the bird on some of those then barely move in
- 1:04:50Speaker 5: front of him, it gives you the line you're not
- 1:04:52Speaker 5: when you mount online, you're taking out the fact that
- 1:04:55Speaker 5: I'm too low or too high. You start right behind
- 1:04:58Speaker 5: the bird and move straight through, so you're in the
- 1:05:00Speaker 5: line with the flight of the bird.
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: M hm.
- 1:05:02Speaker 5: And that takes out fifty of your error over and under.
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: Mm hmm.
- 1:05:08Speaker 10: But Steve, that sounds exactly like what you've told me
- 1:05:11Speaker 10: in the past when you've taken me out. You're like,
- 1:05:13Speaker 10: imagine a paint brush and you're painting beyond the bird.
- 1:05:18Speaker 10: I don't think you told me to keep an eye
- 1:05:20Speaker 10: on the dot. You're like, you're going beyond the bird,
- 1:05:24Speaker 10: in front of it from the beak, and that's where
- 1:05:27Speaker 10: you're shooting because the time that you know.
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: Okay, So yeah, there's a lot of things in life
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: where we tell people your thing fine, then you catch
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: yourself not but yeah, like in my you know, and
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: then in the heat of the moment or whatever, and
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: you just might have not doing there's certain things you
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: don't do, you know. But I've done enough where I
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: can try different not as disciplined as you are. But
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: I've done enough shooting where I know that in some
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: try instances this and some instances that. But but you're
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: talking about a very You're talking about really major shifts
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: and strategy based on situations. And I think most shooters
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: are not consciously yeah, thinking about not consciously going, I'm
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: gonna use this method. Now, I'm gona use that method
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: on that shot. I'm gonna use that method on that show.
- 1:06:13Speaker 5: That brings you to understanding gunfit. So gunfit is not
- 1:06:19Speaker 5: the number one thing, but if you want you to
- 1:06:21Speaker 5: get to shooting a little bit, gunfit is major important
- 1:06:25Speaker 5: because when you mount that gun, when you mount that gun,
- 1:06:28Speaker 5: I should be pointing at what I'm aiming at. So
- 1:06:31Speaker 5: when I'm helping somebody, I'll let them fit the gun,
- 1:06:35Speaker 5: show me it's unloaded, and then I have them mounted
- 1:06:37Speaker 5: and pointed at my right eye, and I can look
- 1:06:40Speaker 5: down and see exactly where their eyes looking, so I
- 1:06:42Speaker 5: can tell it if there's too much not enough comb
- 1:06:45Speaker 5: height too. You know, the comb mite's too low, it's
- 1:06:48Speaker 5: too high, the pitch is wrong. And women are different
- 1:06:52Speaker 5: than men, They're built different. So the heel to toe
- 1:06:55Speaker 5: of the butt plate and how it's angled can hurt
- 1:06:59Speaker 5: and it also so if a gun hurts you, it
- 1:07:01Speaker 5: doesn't fit you. If it hurts your face or your shoulder,
- 1:07:04Speaker 5: it probably doesn't fit you. And everybody, most everybody shoots
- 1:07:09Speaker 5: too hot a shells. They shoot way too much.
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: Pa, there's not better, no no news to me.
- 1:07:18Speaker 5: I can show you right now George Digweed shooting clays
- 1:07:23Speaker 5: at a one hundred and thirty yards with not too
- 1:07:29Speaker 5: hot of shells.
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: I can't picture that. You see the video kind of
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: like lobbing it in there. Man, you're holding for drop.
- 1:07:36Speaker 5: Yeah, he is doing that too, but it's incredible.
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: Are you ever holding for drop on ducks only.
- 1:07:41Speaker 5: If they're seventy five eighty yards or further? Okay, you
- 1:07:44Speaker 5: shoot slightly.
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: Off, so that's not the thing you're not.
- 1:07:46Speaker 5: You don't shoot at him that far. Yeah, you don't
- 1:07:48Speaker 5: shoot at him that far.
- 1:07:51Speaker 6: Here's one thing I'd like to ask you a lot
- 1:07:53Speaker 6: of times I've heard from water fowlers that a good
- 1:07:56Speaker 6: way to know if the duck is close enough to
- 1:07:59Speaker 6: shoot at is when you can see their eye.
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: Yeah, you've heard that that's really close. That's good, that's good,
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: that's good.
- 1:08:05Speaker 6: But it means that like, there's that mandatory or do
- 1:08:08Speaker 6: you feel like, oh no, I could easily shoot when
- 1:08:10Speaker 6: I can't see can't make out the ducks eye.
- 1:08:12Speaker 5: Oh yeah, you can see the color of the head.
- 1:08:14Speaker 5: You can just mallards are great because you could see
- 1:08:16Speaker 5: the green head from the hen. You got something to
- 1:08:19Speaker 5: focus on. But typically you learn like bow hunting. Yeah,
- 1:08:25Speaker 5: when before rangefinders got so easy to use and so forth,
- 1:08:28Speaker 5: if I can look at that tree and I can
- 1:08:30Speaker 5: see the distinguishing mark bark on that tree with my
- 1:08:33Speaker 5: twenty twenty vision, twenty fifteen vision, when if I can
- 1:08:35Speaker 5: see that, I know that that tree is thirty five
- 1:08:39Speaker 5: yards are closer.
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: Hmm. That's a good little trick.
- 1:08:43Speaker 5: Yeah, but you've got to know your eyes to be
- 1:08:46Speaker 5: able to do that.
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: That's a great trick.
- 1:08:47Speaker 5: And here's here's here's a perfect example to kind of
- 1:08:50Speaker 5: help you put some of this lead and so forth.
- 1:08:52Speaker 5: Let's say that birds doing that. Okay, he's flying pretty
- 1:08:56Speaker 5: fast and he's I'm just shooting as a way to
- 1:08:58Speaker 5: say goodbye thirty yards Okay, So what you do is.
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: Showing him out here up here comes the bird over
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: your head. Oh, you mount right behind him and when
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: you move straight down the line, your hands, your gun
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: will hide the bird. But what you're doing is, if
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: the bird's flying at twenty miles an hour, you want
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: to move your gun at twenty one or twenty two
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: miles an hour.
- 1:09:22Speaker 5: So you combine. And when you combine, you keep moving
- 1:09:26Speaker 5: your gun and you bend at the waist and.
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: You pull the trigger, and he will crumple when you
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: pull that trigger. Are you already pulling the second shot?
- 1:09:36Speaker 10: No, okay, you're not, like, because he knows he's gonna
- 1:09:39Speaker 10: hit it.
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: No, this is not I don't know if this is
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: a this is a uh, this is at assary, This
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: isn't a wing shooting question. But uh, in your mind,
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: what's a far away turkey? What's a fire shot? Forty yards? Okay?
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: I won't shoot one past forty just because it's not
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: the game, right, and it's not the game, and it's
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: not fair.
- 1:10:05Speaker 5: There's too many little things that can go wrong. Okay,
- 1:10:08Speaker 5: but it might be forty five, but I misjudged the distance. Really, Yeah,
- 1:10:13Speaker 5: I shoot tss. I shoot a twenty gauge youth eleven
- 1:10:18Speaker 5: eighty seven with a silencer.
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: What do you use for using an optic or to
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: shoot beads.
- 1:10:25Speaker 5: So, because the silencer is a big can, I had
- 1:10:28Speaker 5: to put a I put a Bushnell hologram kind of sight.
- 1:10:32Speaker 5: It's kind of weird. No matter where your head is,
- 1:10:35Speaker 5: as long as the dots on there, it kills it.
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: Dude, I was into those, well, no, I wasn't. I
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: was using those for my kids. The red dots, Okay.
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: I was putting red dots on a break open four
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: ten okay, because it's just easy to explain to a kid. Yeah,
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: I shot red dots last spring on turkeys. I'm done.
- 1:10:55Speaker 5: I'm a bead gallon turkeys. If I didn't have my
- 1:10:58Speaker 5: silence shirt, it's beads.
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: Done with that craft. Yeah, it's fun, but it's just
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: it's just another thing to think about it, man. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: it's another thing thing.
- 1:11:06Speaker 5: She should have shot gun, you know. And I've gone
- 1:11:08Speaker 5: to the silencer because of my ears.
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: Sure, so I know that you got to. You got to.
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: You got the hearing aid, I got to hear it.
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: You blew your years out of your head over the years.
- 1:11:17Speaker 5: Look, I was the Martians ship instructor and the Air Force.
- 1:11:20Speaker 5: I taught people how to shoot them sixteen's and thirty
- 1:11:22Speaker 5: eight and forty five stuff they got shot down in
- 1:11:24Speaker 5: the airplanes. They could protect themselves, and they didn't tell
- 1:11:27Speaker 5: us to protect their ears. They gave us some mere
- 1:11:29Speaker 5: must in Lackland where I trained, but they didn't tell
- 1:11:32Speaker 5: us we had to use them. And then I shot skip.
- 1:11:34Speaker 5: I was the I was the Mississippi State Junior skeeek
- 1:11:37Speaker 5: champion in nineteen sixty four at twelve years old. Nobody
- 1:11:43Speaker 5: entered but me, and I won by the fault. I
- 1:11:46Speaker 5: never forget my little futer cup. I'm standing up.
- 1:11:48Speaker 9: I won.
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: Isn't that something I didn't wear? Hear in protection?
- 1:11:52Speaker 5: So now I've got I've got, you know, I've got
- 1:11:55Speaker 5: here in eighth and I got high frequency back. I
- 1:11:58Speaker 5: can hear high frequency. I can talk to a child now,
- 1:12:01Speaker 5: whereas I couldn't for a long time.
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: And you know, did it bring the gobbels back? Yeah,
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: for a long way.
- 1:12:06Speaker 9: You know.
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: Grace started it.
- 1:12:07Speaker 5: She came, dear precious friend of mine, and Grace she's
- 1:12:13Speaker 5: meeting with me, and she looks at my chart and
- 1:12:15Speaker 5: she says, will you need to be wearing here in age?
- 1:12:18Speaker 5: I says, I don't really want to wear here in age.
- 1:12:20Speaker 5: I'm due fine without him, she says. Will the first
- 1:12:23Speaker 5: The first thing that somebody who's lost the kind of
- 1:12:26Speaker 5: hearing that you've lost is gonna get is dementia. Your
- 1:12:30Speaker 5: brain quits using that part of the brain. And so
- 1:12:35Speaker 5: I said, okay, I'm in. So she'd send a lady
- 1:12:37Speaker 5: who calls on your house. I got these hearing aids.
- 1:12:40Speaker 5: I'm learning to use them. I walked outside one morning,
- 1:12:44Speaker 5: it's just barely getting light. It's still dark. Then the
- 1:12:46Speaker 5: winter oak tree is bird singing up there. I went,
- 1:12:48Speaker 5: holy CD, I've never heard that bird before. That is incredible.
- 1:12:52Speaker 5: I went back inside. I got my binoculars. I want
- 1:12:54Speaker 5: to see what bird it was. Bird wasn't there. I'm
- 1:12:56Speaker 5: standing there. Start singing again. I run in the backyard.
- 1:12:58Speaker 5: There it is, but not, here's a robin. I ain't
- 1:13:04Speaker 5: heard a robin sing in twenty five years.
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: I'm headed that way. Yeah, and I was not regret it. Well,
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: the gobbles are getting hard. I always talk. I talk
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: about this all the time. But like my kids, there's
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: one like, no, it's not shut up. Just like Seth
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: and I have fish as next to each other. I'll
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: yell something over that Seth and he'll yell back. I'm big.
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: I look at my kid. He said this.
- 1:13:34Speaker 5: He said, Look when I say we have the camera, mean,
- 1:13:38Speaker 5: what do you saying?
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: Yeah, that's what'd you say. Now I can hear what
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: they say.
- 1:13:43Speaker 5: I got these here and they're they're incredible.
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: Or even in the boat. My daughter will be in
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: the boat and it's set a little bit of background
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: noise of the motor running. Not even bad should be
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: looking out the front of the boat talking everybody in
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: the boat. I'm like, what's she talking about. I'm like, ros,
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: you got to turn around, look at me or come
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: back here. But I can't hear you from one end
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: of this eighteen foot boat to the other.
- 1:14:02Speaker 5: Well, it's a pretty good test that I can hear
- 1:14:04Speaker 5: everything you say in this room because that microfat is
- 1:14:07Speaker 5: in front of your lips and I cannot read your lips.
- 1:14:11Speaker 5: Reading lips is a big deal when you start losing
- 1:14:13Speaker 5: your hearing.
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: I tried so hard not I really try to enforce
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: the hearing aid stuff with my kid. My kid had
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: these we uh on the fourth of July, whereas by
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: by the fireworks, you know, and my kid had these
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: kind of like souped up snapp its that came in
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: this plastic thing, and he decided to try to open
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: that package with his teeth that had his ears ringing,
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: oh blood, his lips all bloody, and one of them snapped.
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: It snapped a couple of them because then it detonated
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: its neighbor. And he's like Mayor's mayors, And I'm like,
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: damn it, man, Now he's gonna be like me and
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: a half deaf, you know, And I had the We
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: keep teasing my wife about this because, uh she had
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: probably the best mom quote all the time. She says
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: she's all mad, and uh so the kids always tease
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: her and I do too, but she goes, that's why
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: fireworks should be for professionals. True, we're gonna bring in
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: a professional to light this black cat. The professionals will
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: be here at nine to throw our snappops. That sounds horrible, Uh, anyhow,
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: I don't. Yeah, we were so stupid. I mean, listen,
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: I never not that I wasn't aware of what they
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: were sitting in. Duck blinds. We didn't have blinds, but
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: duck hunting as kids hunker down, make it. Yeah, we
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: make blinds. Whatever duck hunting, including like belly crawling up
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: on ducks in a pond and get them the old
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: one two three with your buddy shotgun, like like three
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: inches from the side of your face. I would people
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: didn't even bring they didn't even leave hearing protection in
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: the truck. Like you simply did not own it.
- 1:16:08Speaker 5: You gotta own it like I don't.
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: When I I don't mean own it like how people
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: use it now, Like you got to own that. You
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: know it's your responsible. I mean own it like they
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: didn't possess. I got you, and it was just a
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: part of the deal that some guy would light one
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: off next to your head. It's just like there's that
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: old feeling.
- 1:16:30Speaker 5: I know, somebody who wanted to be funny and he
- 1:16:31Speaker 5: had a few too many beers and he had his
- 1:16:33Speaker 5: thick of dynamite and they were trying to make it
- 1:16:35Speaker 5: blow up in the air, and he held it the
- 1:16:39Speaker 5: fust just the right late and he went off right there.
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: You got to see his hand his ear. It gives
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: me a sickening feeling now thinking of all that time,
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: all those times when I would just be like for
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: two days, know when someone touched one off next to
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: your head.
- 1:16:57Speaker 5: Yeah, look, the foam mere plugs are inexpensive. They usually
- 1:17:00Speaker 5: give him away gun rangers. And if you know how
- 1:17:02Speaker 5: to use them and you squash them down and put
- 1:17:04Speaker 5: them in your ears and then hold it in there
- 1:17:06Speaker 5: until they swell up, that helps tremendously.
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: That's all Anthony uses. Really, that's a grace start of
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: it makes fantastic. And he just uses the old phoemis.
- 1:17:16Speaker 5: Yeah, the old phoneies.
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: Yeah, better nothing. And I'll tell you what, like when
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: you're young, you can't picture if someone had told me, like,
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: oh later, you'll have hearing problems. And I don't even have,
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: like really I have like kind of hearing problems. You
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: can't hear bugles good like the guy next to you can.
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: And the worst is not hearing gobbles. I have to
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: look at it. Like when I'm hunting with Seth, I
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: just had to look like we'll we'll crow call whatever
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: and that will brill in my case blue jay crawl
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: you know how, We'll make a noise, will make a loud,
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: disruptive noise, and I'll have to look at I'll listen,
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: but I'm also looking at Seth to see if he
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: like raises his eyebrows or some indication to something.
- 1:17:52Speaker 5: Which like an alcoholic. The first step is admitting you
- 1:17:56Speaker 5: have a problem.
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: You have a problem with yeah, calls and hearing. Yeah,
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: that's my two primary problems. Uh. You and I are
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: both big fans of Jeremiah Johnson.
- 1:18:13Speaker 5: No, no, no better cinematography, no better word.
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: You think that was the Hunter? Let me ask you,
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: do you think a hunter shout that movie or a
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: camera guy?
- 1:18:23Speaker 3: I think it was a camera Well, can you get
- 1:18:25Speaker 3: a little closer to your microphone please?
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: I'm I think it was the camera guy. Yeah, yeah, Uh,
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: will brought me a gift. The position of this suggests
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: that you're trying to take credit for writing Jeremiah Johnson.
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: But it's just your email address up top. That's it's
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: the entire script, Yeah, for Jeremiah Johnson. So the v O,
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: there's a little vo. There's a narrator that has a
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: couple of lines in there up top and at the
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: end discreet and and then it's every word and then
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: including the parts where he can't tell what anybody's saying. Well,
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: the reason he can't tell, but it's like it's one
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: of those things where people debate what said.
- 1:19:07Speaker 5: Yes, So what inspired me was when when delle gue
- 1:19:11Speaker 5: has come up on the Indians. After he's after the
- 1:19:14Speaker 5: Mormons buried him in the sand and he got dug out,
- 1:19:17Speaker 5: you know, not the Mormons turn Mormons, part Mormon, but anyway,
- 1:19:22Speaker 5: you know, he finally gets there and he goes in
- 1:19:24Speaker 5: there to kill him. He starts screaming as he's going
- 1:19:27Speaker 5: in to kill him. And I'm listening, listening, I've listened
- 1:19:30Speaker 5: to it thousands of times. What you're hearing, Aiden, with
- 1:19:33Speaker 5: the hearing Aiden everything, I just can't understand what he's saying.
- 1:19:37Speaker 5: So I went and researched and found finally and you
- 1:19:41Speaker 5: can read what Dale gus.
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: I will, but I want to did you once you
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: found out what it was, did you then watch yes, okay,
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: and you're convinced this is what he says.
- 1:19:51Speaker 5: Yes, okay, now now it made sense. It's kind of
- 1:19:54Speaker 5: like a song that you can't really understand. But once
- 1:19:56Speaker 5: you read the lyrics and listen to it song, oh
- 1:19:59Speaker 5: that's what he's saying.
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: In cases any idiots out here in the listening public,
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: There's a movie called Jeremiah Johnson. It was directed by
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: Sidney Pollack. Uh. It's set eighteen thirty six, So what
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: the movie is set?
- 1:20:14Speaker 5: And I believe it's set in like eighteen sixty Was
- 1:20:18Speaker 5: it that late?
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: It was the well, no, it was right. He was
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: coming out of the.
- 1:20:21Speaker 5: Spanish American War. Yeah, yeah, that's later.
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: Yeah, sixty three, No, not sixty.
- 1:20:27Speaker 5: Three, somewhere in there.
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:20:31Speaker 3: Uh.
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: Robert Redford plays a character Jeremiah Johnson. He's coming from war.
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: He's coming from the Spanish American War, not the Spanish
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: Mexican Americans come from the Mexican late eighteen forties. No,
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: I don't think it's that. It is, man, he just missed.
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: He just missed the fur era. Yeah, take that up. Randall,
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: doctor Randall. You know, Randall's got PhD in what history?
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: All right, Turkey, all right, it's all I got. So
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: he's gonna apply. He's gonna watch you to a PhD historian,
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: apply his training, and he's gonna tell us what year
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: that war ended. Watch you'll find it.
- 1:21:06Speaker 5: Go for random.
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: I gotta double check all these sources.
- 1:21:10Speaker 3: That's true.
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: He's going back to the primary source work.
- 1:21:13Speaker 5: Okay.
- 1:21:14Speaker 4: Uh.
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: Jeremiah Johnson is the Spanish. The Mexican American tales name
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: of the war, Randall Mexican American following the Mexican American War.
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: He wants to go and be a mountain man. But
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: he arrives, and he arrives in the Northern Rockies and
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: the heyday's over, the beaver trade is wound down. He
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: just wants to be largely left alone. He encounters these
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: number of these great characters. He sort of acts very
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: accidentally against his better judgment. Starts like a little family.
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: He winds up not accidentally, like against his wishes. He's
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: thrust in due position where he has to adopt a
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: young child, also against his wishes, and against his better judgment.
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: He's thrust in the position where he has to become married.
- 1:22:07Speaker 5: That's correct.
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: So now he's like has a wife that he didn't want,
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: he has a child that he doesn't want, and he
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: tries to establish a life for them. Spoiler alert, they're killed,
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: and it sets him on a quest for vengeance. And
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: through time his thirst for vengeance is sated, and and
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: he's just now like a sort of ghost of a
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: man and living alone in the mountains. And I will
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: say that the vengeance in this case was really the crows,
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: because he made his amends when he went and kill
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: the people that killed his wife and his kid. That's true.
- 1:22:47Speaker 5: And he left one and that one then reports back
- 1:22:53Speaker 5: to paints his shirt red, which is the headed guy,
- 1:22:57Speaker 5: head of the tribe, and he says, and the drenth
- 1:23:00Speaker 5: of them is built on one warrior, and so they
- 1:23:04Speaker 5: send one warrior at.
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: A time to kill Jeremiah. Yep, and he is able
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: to kill everyone that he sent after you.
- 1:23:11Speaker 8: Okay, if I may interject, there's no specific year that's
- 1:23:17Speaker 8: pinpointed to the movie, but.
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: I know that if there was, we wouldn't be arguing
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: about it. I'd be holding it right in my hand.
- 1:23:22Speaker 8: That's fair because he was a veteran of the Mexican
- 1:23:26Speaker 8: American War, and he's still wearing his cavalry pants when
- 1:23:30Speaker 8: he went into the mountains Mexican American War eighteen forty six,
- 1:23:33Speaker 8: eighteen forty eight.
- 1:23:34Speaker 5: Okay, I didn't know.
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: He encounters a man. He's out in the desert and
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: he encounters a man buried to his neck, just his
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: head's bald headsticking out. No, he's wearing it. He had
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: hair at the time. No, he was bald, bald time. Yeah,
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: And he yells something, he says, I am delG you,
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: I can whip my weight andes that everybody knows that.
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: What they don't know is this, straight through a crab
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: apple orchard on a flash of lightning. I never knew
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: that till last night. Yeah, you've stolen my pelts and die.
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: You must already knew that. Straight through a crab apple
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: orchard on a flash of lightning. And the old days
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: we would have called this whole episode that. There you go,
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: I like it. Well, we can't anymore trying to get
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: more serious about what SEO. I don't know what the
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: hell we're.
- 1:24:38Speaker 10: Trying to search engine optimism.
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: No one's searching that because they don't know that that's
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: what he says, it would get se O zero. No
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: one's searching that today. Straight through a crab apple orchard
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: and a flash of lightning. Well, I love the movie
- 1:24:59Speaker 1: most because then, so we're gonna go to this is
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: this an episode of Steve Reid's movie Scripts?
- 1:25:07Speaker 3: So you don't know what about?
- 1:25:08Speaker 6: Are we gonna skip over the part where he's running
- 1:25:10Speaker 6: into the house, the part that Will didn't know what
- 1:25:14Speaker 6: he was saying.
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: Now we know was not in the house.
- 1:25:17Speaker 5: He's the Indians are sleeping.
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: So yeah, they attack him.
- 1:25:22Speaker 5: So the young boy that he's been forced to take
- 1:25:25Speaker 5: on as a son. And Jeremiah have found del U
- 1:25:28Speaker 5: buried up to his head and you know, asked him,
- 1:25:32Speaker 5: he said, engines bury you here twarnt marmons. So they
- 1:25:36Speaker 5: dig him out. And now the search becomes to go
- 1:25:39Speaker 5: find these Indians and they were black Feet, I believe,
- 1:25:47Speaker 5: and to find them and and and Dale is gonna
- 1:25:52Speaker 5: kill him. Jeremah doesn't want kill him. He's supposed to
- 1:25:54Speaker 5: be left alone. Yeah, and that's when he's that's when
- 1:25:57Speaker 5: he when when Dale g that's when he's that part
- 1:26:00Speaker 5: is charging and that's what that's what he's. George Indian,
- 1:26:05Speaker 5: one of the delightful characters.
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: He meets his bear claw, Chris lap Lap, and he said,
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: Chris lap begrudgingly saves his life and gives him his
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: initial education and mountain living, how to stay warm, how
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: to get food and all that, and then uh, how
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: to trap you leave. Then Chris lap leaves him and
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: the end Jeremia Johnson's like way up in the high country.
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: He's uh cooking a rabbit. Now. One problem, the one
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: problem in Jeremiah Johnson. There's one distinct, singular problem in
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: the whole movie. One imperfection he's roasting a rabbit on
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: a stick. The end of the movie, it's just sad.
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: Everything's sad and depressing. He's way up in the high
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: country by himself, bundled in his furs. He's got a
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: little fire going and he's cooking a rabbit. The one
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: problem in the movie Randall, what is it? Do you know?
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: Oak beagles No. When he goes to get he goes
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: to pull a leg from the rabbit and it comes
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: off as though it's tender. Mmmm.
- 1:27:07Speaker 5: It's like it's.
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: It's no way. They almost got to the end with that.
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: If I would have been there as a consultant, I
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: would have said he needs to really try to pull
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: hard and can't get it off, and eventually tries to
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: cut that leg off because I don't care how you
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: cook a contail rabbit on.
- 1:27:24Speaker 3: A fire, so you think it was a like it
- 1:27:29Speaker 3: was pre cut or was a farm raised.
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: The rabbit reaches out bearcrock. Chris Lap pulls up. Ask him,
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: everything's unspoken this movie. Ask him what's on the spit?
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: Chris Lap asks Jeremia Johnson what's on particular. Jeremiah Johnson says, no,
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: who guess what? Yeah, Chris Lap asked Jeremi Johnson, what's
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: on the spit grown particular? And he says to him,
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: he replies, have you grown particular? And he says, only
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: about the company I keep, mm hmm. But he throws he.
- 1:28:07Speaker 5: He says, not about my feeding, just the company.
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: That's just the company I keep. But he's willing to
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: come talk to Johnson. Johnson then removes the leg of
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: the rabbit and it's just too easy. It's always tripped
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: me up.
- 1:28:20Speaker 11: Maybe he had an instant.
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: Yeah it. If he pulled it off, I'd be like, yeah,
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: this looks great. There's a movie I want to get
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: into subtlety. We're nearing the end of the show here
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: will but there's a very good movie called You Can
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: count on Me, Okay, And it's about a brother and
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: a sister who are orphaned and then one of them
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: becomes like a family person and one of them becomes
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: an addict and wander and the whole movie. You never
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: know why the movie is called you can count on Me.
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: No one ever says you can count on me. Nothing.
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: In the end of the movie, the brother and sister
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: tried to come together, but he's too messed up, and
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: the sister doesn't want the brother around her children, so
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: he's got to go away. And one of them says
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: the other one, do you remember what we used to
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: always say to each other? And you're thinking, well, here's
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: the part where someone's gonna go, yeah, it was you
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: can count on me, But he just says, yeah, I
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: remember never said. No one ever says the words in
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: the whole movie. But you know the name of the
- 1:29:24Speaker 1: movie is the answer to the riddle, right, Jeremia Johnson
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: nothing said in the end of the movie, but it's this, Uh,
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: Jeremiah Johnson wants to know of Chris ask Chris Lap,
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: would you happen to know what month of the year
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: it is? And Chris Lap takes a stab at it.
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: March maybe April. March is a money month down below.
- 1:29:53Speaker 5: Some folks like it mostly I hope you will farewell.
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: No, you left out, he says. They speculate about what
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: month it is, and they don't arrive at an answer. Right,
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: It's just left is an open question. They don't know that.
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: They're so out there now and so removed from anything
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: to say March. I don't believe April. Yeah, he goes, March.
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: Maybe I don't believe April. Winner's a long time going
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: stays long. This high march is a green, muddy month
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: down below. Some folks like it, farmers mostly. Then he
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: says that he changes the subject. It's a non sequitor.
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: You've done well to keep so much hair when so
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: many is after it, when so manyar after it. I
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: hope you farewell. And the movie no no, then the
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: voiceover yeah, the then paints his shirt red, says his
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: piece doesn't say anything and say it, but he says it,
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: says it with his hand. Yeah, wow, thanks for that.
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: I need a really long hallway because I'm gonna frame
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: this whole thing. But I need a hallway long enough
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: to We've got that. Yeah, really long frames. So the
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: eleven inches higher.
- 1:31:08Speaker 5: To me, to me, paints his shirt red, and Jeremiah's
- 1:31:11Speaker 5: ending scene is about forgiveness.
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: Yes, it's it's it's paints his shirt red, that offers
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: the sign of peace. I shouldn't leave that off.
- 1:31:22Speaker 5: And then when Jeremiah gives, gives when he realized when
- 1:31:27Speaker 5: he reaches first gun at first because he thinks we
- 1:31:29Speaker 5: go again, and then he realizes it's paints his shirt red,
- 1:31:32Speaker 5: and he realizes he's offered the peace sign. He cannot
- 1:31:36Speaker 5: stretch his hand any tighter.
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, he goes and then he goes higher.
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: It was like got the trump got his earshot fist
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: in the air defiant. Yeah, but it's not. It's a piece.
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: He stretches it and then he like strains to get
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: it higher and instead emitting, he's just got rags wrapped
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: around his hands.
- 1:31:54Speaker 5: Well, I'm telling you, it's been wonderful to meet all
- 1:31:57Speaker 5: of y'all as a bee here. It's been absolutely great.
- 1:32:00Speaker 5: And as far as the book goes, you can pre
- 1:32:02Speaker 5: order audio right now. You go to Amazon and and
- 1:32:05Speaker 5: just type in Straight Shooting for Hunters and audio. Yeah,
- 1:32:08Speaker 5: the audio version and the book. The audio version will
- 1:32:12Speaker 5: come out first, and the audio is read by me.
- 1:32:14Speaker 5: It's my good, perfect, it's my voice.
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: You let some idiot read it.
- 1:32:18Speaker 5: Yeah, so it'll be Straight Shooting for Hunters And type

- 1:32:26Speaker 5: in the book are very visual.
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: That's why. That's why when you said audio, I was like.
- 1:32:32Speaker 5: Sure, when you go to talking about pointed the eyes
- 1:32:34Speaker 5: and establishing how dominant you are and either I it's
