- 2:21Speaker 2: the Mayor of South Charleston, Frank Mullins Junior, Good morning, sir,
- 2:23Speaker 2: and welcome, good morning, good morning show. Thanks to having me.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Da've always always glad to be here, always glad to
- 2:29Speaker 2: have you. Yeah, all right, So first of all, I
- 2:31Speaker 2: have to ask you, Yeah, how's winter time been for
- 2:33Speaker 2: South Charleston. I mean, because you know, it's it's been.
- 2:36Speaker 2: It's it's been a rough one. Just went through another round,
- 2:39Speaker 2: you know, Sunday night at the Monday morning, looking pretty
- 2:42Speaker 2: good out there for the next several days. But how's
- 2:44Speaker 2: winter time been for something? It's been, It's been tough.
- 2:46Speaker 4: It's been.
- 2:47Speaker 5: Uh, you know, we've got through it pretty good, but uh,
- 2:49Speaker 5: you know, assault rationing is a serious concern. Hopefully we
- 2:52Speaker 5: don't get any more snow for a while. Because we're
- 2:54Speaker 5: pretty much out and I think that's pretty much the
- 2:56Speaker 5: consensus around the state. And I know, I know we've
- 2:59Speaker 5: with this state. We've used out to them a couple
- 3:00Speaker 5: of times. I know they're running low to Charleston. I
- 3:02Speaker 5: know our directors talked yesterday, both public works directors talked,
- 3:05Speaker 5: and we're all going.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Through the same thing.
- 3:07Speaker 5: And when when you have storms that spread throughout most
- 3:10Speaker 5: of the country like this one has, and everybody's trying
- 3:12Speaker 5: to replenish their salt it and and then rivers freeze
- 3:14Speaker 5: on top of that, making it tough for the barges
- 3:16Speaker 5: to get up and down.
- 3:18Speaker 2: It's uh. I remember this happening back in the nineties
- 3:20Speaker 2: when I.
- 3:20Speaker 5: Was director of Public Works, and it's a it's a
- 3:22Speaker 5: nerve wracking time for the public works director, but we'll
- 3:24Speaker 5: get through it well.
- 3:25Speaker 2: And again this has been and this winter has been
- 3:29Speaker 2: one that it just seems like that we haven't had
- 3:32Speaker 2: And I talked to Brian Hughes meteorologists about this from
- 3:35Speaker 2: time to time. It's not that it's been that bad
- 3:37Speaker 2: of a winter overall. It's just that we had the
- 3:40Speaker 2: one snow in January that didn't go anywhere. Yeah, you know,
- 3:43Speaker 2: because we had that was the weekend where we had
- 3:46Speaker 2: the you know, the snow, the freezing rain, the rain,
- 3:48Speaker 2: and then and it was and that snow stuck around
- 3:50Speaker 2: for like two weeks and it just kept refreezing and refreezing.
- 3:53Speaker 2: We had a couple of more events after that. But
- 3:55Speaker 2: you're right, the salt issue is is a big, a
- 3:57Speaker 2: big issue. Yeah, it's a big issue, and particularly for us.
- 4:00Speaker 5: You know, we're known for the snower move on South
- 4:01Speaker 5: charlest and so you know it's not supposed to stick
- 4:03Speaker 5: in our city, but it may if it comes again.
- 4:05Speaker 2: Let's hope not. You guys have our as you said,
- 4:08Speaker 2: did you probably won't want to pat yourself on the back,
- 4:11Speaker 2: but I mean a lot of people would pat the
- 4:13Speaker 2: city of South trol about people that I work with
- 4:15Speaker 2: here in the building to live in South Charles and
- 4:16Speaker 2: they say, you guys really go above and beyond that. Yeah,
- 4:19Speaker 2: we take a lot of pride in that.
- 4:20Speaker 5: That's something we you know, we are garbage collection of
- 4:22Speaker 5: snow re move on South Charleston. Those are two things
- 4:23Speaker 5: I always tell your public works guys, don't that's the
- 4:25Speaker 5: two things you don't mess up in South Charleston. Garbage
- 4:27Speaker 5: collector of snow removing. So yeah, but they're good at
- 4:29Speaker 5: they do a good job and we'll get through it.
- 4:31Speaker 5: We'll get through it. How are things uh in South
- 4:33Speaker 5: Charlest what's new? Yeah, everything's been. The newest thing we
- 4:36Speaker 5: just did is is we I think I talked to
- 4:39Speaker 5: you about it on another show. I think as we
- 4:41Speaker 5: cut the ribbon on anports, esports and gaming new facility
- 4:44Speaker 5: to Community Center. So we're excited about that. Uh, South
- 4:47Speaker 5: Charleston High School's got a class pertains to that. They
- 4:50Speaker 5: came down and participated in it. We've reached out to
- 4:52Speaker 5: some of our colleges who have that in their colleges
- 4:54Speaker 5: as well, and we're hoping to get some tournaments and
- 4:56Speaker 5: competition going soon.
- 4:57Speaker 2: So for those who may or for those who may
- 4:59Speaker 2: have heard that in you we did a couple of
- 5:00Speaker 2: weeks ago and I producer Ryan Nicholson to ask a
- 5:02Speaker 2: couple of questions in there as well. We appreciate that,
- 5:05Speaker 2: but explain what E sports is. I'll do the best
- 5:08Speaker 2: I can. Tag it back in again. But yeah, well,
- 5:13Speaker 2: I mean it's you know, it's we're good right now.
- 5:15Speaker 5: A lot of different games on on there now where
- 5:18Speaker 5: it's it's a competitive situation to where kids are even
- 5:21Speaker 5: get scholarship to go to college on these kind of things.
- 5:23Speaker 5: Now what we called back in today video video, what
- 5:25Speaker 5: we called video games, A little different scenario, a lot
- 5:28Speaker 5: uh yeah, a lot of different scenario. And I don't
- 5:30Speaker 5: know how well I can explain. I need some of
- 5:31Speaker 5: my younger staff to come on and do it, maybe,
- 5:33Speaker 5: but uh, but it's exciting and it's uh and again
- 5:36Speaker 5: it's just it brings it can bring. It's almost like
- 5:38Speaker 5: think about this, think about bringing baseball and soccer tournaments
- 5:41Speaker 5: to your community and how how what an economic impact
- 5:44Speaker 5: that has, and bring it to your hotels and your restaurants.
- 5:46Speaker 5: And this kind of opens up the opportunity to do
- 5:48Speaker 5: that and this kind of activity as well, and maybe
- 5:51Speaker 5: even more so. And it was I think I shared
- 5:53Speaker 5: with it was born out of our design of our
- 5:55Speaker 5: new facility where we're we're hoping to build soon and
- 5:58Speaker 5: and I just decided to go ahead and pulled the
- 6:00Speaker 5: trigger and let's get started at the community center and
- 6:01Speaker 5: see how well is received.
- 6:02Speaker 2: I mean, this thing is huge, as you said, and
- 6:06Speaker 2: again older people not old older people. I guess we said,
- 6:10Speaker 2: what video games for me? It's like I'm thinking, pac Man, Paul,
- 6:14Speaker 2: you know, because I'm old, but it's become a totally
- 6:18Speaker 2: different thing. And you said, students get college scholarships for
- 6:21Speaker 2: this now, and before you do what I have a
- 6:24Speaker 2: tendency to do, which it Yeah, these young kids today
- 6:26Speaker 2: or whatever. A couple of things to keep in mind.
- 6:28Speaker 2: What those games do, what we call quote unquote games
- 6:31Speaker 2: teaches a lot of skills that are Last week I'll
- 6:36Speaker 2: give you example. Last week I talked to Chris Hamilton
- 6:38Speaker 2: from the Coal Association on the show, and he was
- 6:40Speaker 2: talking about the modern coal mine, and you can transform
- 6:43Speaker 2: this into any business that you want a lot of
- 6:46Speaker 2: those skills that they're using were learned on these e sports. Yeah,
- 6:50Speaker 2: you know, I mean like robotics and things of that nature.
- 6:52Speaker 2: So it's not just about playing games for a living.
- 6:55Speaker 2: It's about transitioning those skills into other things. Yeah, we
- 6:59Speaker 2: go through that too.
- 7:00Speaker 5: Surprised how much of that from a technology standpoint you
- 7:03Speaker 5: have to learn now to do jobs we used to
- 7:05Speaker 5: remember as being on the.
- 7:06Speaker 2: Line in the plants.
- 7:07Speaker 5: Yeah, and how long it takes now for those folks
- 7:09Speaker 5: to learn that skill set to be on the line.
- 7:11Speaker 5: I went through it with a stamp with all the
- 7:13Speaker 5: modern technology for stamping out car parts that they go
- 7:15Speaker 5: through takes two to three years sometimes the edit creating
- 7:18Speaker 5: train these folks to do those jobs. Just what you're
- 7:20Speaker 5: talking about because of technology. Yeah, it's amazing, it's amazing.
- 7:23Speaker 2: We're talking to South Charleston May Frankmullin's a day Island
- 7:26Speaker 2: show and five eighty line has brought you in part
- 7:28Speaker 2: by Pinnacle Consultants help me to identify environmental concerns as best.
- 7:31Speaker 2: It's led mold, indoor quality issues and buildings all across
- 7:34Speaker 2: the state, providing inspections, testing and accredited lab services you
- 7:37Speaker 2: can trust. Check out Pinnacle Corp dot net helping you
- 7:40Speaker 2: understand your environment because what you don't know can hurt you.
- 7:43Speaker 2: Let's talk retail in South Charleston.
- 7:45Speaker 6: I mean.
- 7:46Speaker 2: Things going up, things happening. Yeah, talking those things going well.
- 7:49Speaker 5: We cut a couple of ribbons on some small businesses
- 7:51Speaker 5: downtown here here in the last couple of weeks as well.
- 7:54Speaker 5: But park places what folks are always really interested in.
- 7:56Speaker 5: It's going very well. Matter of fact, I put my
- 7:58Speaker 5: hard hat on and went and tour to New Kroger
- 8:00Speaker 5: facility just this week and it's it's amazing inside. Uh,
- 8:03Speaker 5: what's gonna what's gonna be in there? I think people
- 8:05Speaker 5: are gonna be excited. I know people are excited about
- 8:07Speaker 5: it because I hear about it every day.
- 8:08Speaker 2: And this Kroger that is coming to park Place, he
- 8:11Speaker 2: is unlike any other Kroger that you've ever seen.
- 8:14Speaker 5: The first one in the state of West Virginia is
- 8:16Speaker 5: called a marketplace. And so they they do more than groceries,
- 8:19Speaker 5: although groceries are still there, you know, it's still their
- 8:21Speaker 5: big their big deal.
- 8:22Speaker 2: At the end of the day.
- 8:23Speaker 5: They have that what they call soft products as well,
- 8:25Speaker 5: which you'll see in any wal Mart or Target or
- 8:26Speaker 5: things like that, outdoor furnit or clothing, cook wear, whatever
- 8:30Speaker 5: it may be.
- 8:31Speaker 7: You know.
- 8:31Speaker 5: So they have some other things in there as well.
- 8:32Speaker 5: But I mean, like I say, I toured this facilitan
- 8:35Speaker 5: just the just the area where they're going to have
- 8:37Speaker 5: their beauty products for example. Man, it's amazing. It's almost
- 8:40Speaker 5: like a store in its own and so on a
- 8:42Speaker 5: sushi bar and the wine and cheese and just everything
- 8:44Speaker 5: that it has that we don't have now. And I
- 8:47Speaker 5: think people are going to be real excited once we
- 8:48Speaker 5: get that t one hundred and twenty two thousand square
- 8:50Speaker 5: foot store compared to the fifty thousand square foot we
- 8:53Speaker 5: have across the street to Riverwock kind of gives you
- 8:54Speaker 5: an idea of the size.
- 8:56Speaker 2: And I'm just kind of curious, and you don't have
- 8:58Speaker 2: to tell us if you can't. But what what Lon
- 9:00Speaker 2: didn't want to do that in South Charleston because that's
- 9:02Speaker 2: a pretty big feather in the capital the city of
- 9:04Speaker 2: South Charleston. When you think that this is the first
- 9:06Speaker 2: one like it in the state. Charleston doesn't have it,
- 9:08Speaker 2: Morgantown doesn't have it, Huntington doesn't have it.
- 9:10Speaker 5: The South Charleston does well, you know, I think, And
- 9:13Speaker 5: just real quickly, the backstory to it is, you know,
- 9:15Speaker 5: Kruger came on board early on in this project and
- 9:17Speaker 5: then they kind of left. They had they had a
- 9:19Speaker 5: big change in their corporate headquarters, real estate, folks changed hands,
- 9:22Speaker 5: leadership changed hand, and they changed their mind they weren't
- 9:24Speaker 5: going to do it. And then this a couple of
- 9:25Speaker 5: years later. As a matter of fact, I mentioned that
- 9:28Speaker 5: to our folks that are working on So let's reach
- 9:30Speaker 5: back out to them. It's been a couple of years.
- 9:31Speaker 5: See if they have some more interesting and lo and
- 9:34Speaker 5: behold they did, and the new leadership came in they
- 9:36Speaker 5: wanted to come back. Why, Dave, I think is the
- 9:38Speaker 5: site itself. It's like we've been going to I haven't
- 9:41Speaker 5: done it, but I've sent my staff. They've gone to
- 9:43Speaker 5: Vegas with our developer. And one of the things that's
- 9:44Speaker 5: so attractive about this area highest traffic count in the
- 9:47Speaker 5: state of West Virginia is right there on Route sixty
- 9:49Speaker 5: Jefferson park Our Jefferson Road. I'm sorry so that that
- 9:53Speaker 5: traffic count in itself makes that site so attractive, and
- 9:56Speaker 5: I think that has a lot to do with all
- 9:58Speaker 5: the all the the the interest we've had from retailers
- 10:01Speaker 5: around the country to come there.
- 10:03Speaker 2: I've said this for a long time. It's still true today.
- 10:04Speaker 5: We have more interest than we have space Oblata, which
- 10:06Speaker 5: is a good thing that's allowed us to be a
- 10:08Speaker 5: little bit choosy. So I can't answer for Kroger's the
- 10:12Speaker 5: wives specifically they want to do this particular marketplace. But
- 10:15Speaker 5: at the end of the day, I think a lot
- 10:16Speaker 5: of it has to do with that traffic count.
- 10:18Speaker 2: Oh, we had to tax. Somebody said, do we have
- 10:20Speaker 2: a projected opening for the new Kroger.
- 10:22Speaker 5: Yes, June this. Yeah, Now, remember those dates are always
- 10:25Speaker 5: a moving target.
- 10:26Speaker 2: Especially when we'll go back to the weather for a moment. Yeah,
- 10:30Speaker 2: they reached out to us.
- 10:31Speaker 5: If you all remember, there was a story not too
- 10:33Speaker 5: long ago about Kroger's game plan for the area and
- 10:36Speaker 5: what they were going to do, and and also in
- 10:38Speaker 5: that conversation I had with them, they targeted to June.
- 10:41Speaker 5: The third, which I believe is the Winds the first
- 10:43Speaker 5: Wednesday in June as the grand opening for the new facility,
- 10:46Speaker 5: and you'll be.
- 10:46Speaker 2: There with a ribbon ready to they're ready to go, Yes, sir.
- 10:49Speaker 2: What about the other stores out there? Well, if you
- 10:52Speaker 2: look over there now, you see actually four things under construction.
- 10:56Speaker 2: Obviously the Kroger. There'll be two buildings.
- 10:58Speaker 5: You see one going up being directed the steel you
- 11:00Speaker 5: see the steal up now, another identical building, just identical
- 11:03Speaker 5: to that, will be going up right beside it. Those
- 11:05Speaker 5: will house seven retailers of piece, some of them I've
- 11:09Speaker 5: already announced, like Sketchers and Mister Magoo and Nothing, Bunt Cake,
- 11:12Speaker 5: some of the smaller businesses will go in there. There'll
- 11:14Speaker 5: be fourteen altogether. And then if you look farther to
- 11:16Speaker 5: the west, just the very west end of the property,
- 11:18Speaker 5: next to the office of the interstate exit, you'll see
- 11:21Speaker 5: the fuel station for Kroger going up as well. The
- 11:23Speaker 5: canopy is already up there and it's ready to go
- 11:26Speaker 5: as well. So those are the four things being built.
- 11:28Speaker 2: Now.
- 11:28Speaker 5: You'll see Mission Barbecue begin this spring. We have had
- 11:31Speaker 5: great contact with Minards now it looks like they're about
- 11:34Speaker 5: ready to go as well. We're expecting their building plans
- 11:36Speaker 5: any day so we can issue their building permit. So
- 11:38Speaker 5: I expect them to be started this spring as well.
- 11:40Speaker 5: So things are really starting to pick up pace over there,
- 11:43Speaker 5: and hopefully by this time next year we'll see a
- 11:45Speaker 5: lot of shopping going on.
- 11:46Speaker 2: I'm gonna say, if you had a proje and again
- 11:48Speaker 2: things can change, Yeah, just like with Kroger. Yeah, but
- 11:51Speaker 2: with a projected when pretty much everything is done, what
- 11:55Speaker 2: would that be.
- 11:56Speaker 5: I would say, probably be the summer of twenty seven,
- 11:58Speaker 5: when everything's done this or twenty six. I'm sorry, no, no,
- 12:02Speaker 5: I'm sorry, twenty seven, twenty six already, don't get it.
- 12:06Speaker 5: So yeah, so this summer what you'll see is what
- 12:08Speaker 5: we call Phase one. The stores I just mentioned to you,
- 12:10Speaker 5: and those those will all should be opened by this summer,
- 12:13Speaker 5: and then the next phase, what we call Phase two,
- 12:15Speaker 5: which will close on sometime this summer as well, and
- 12:18Speaker 5: then you'll see those buildings starting to go up. They
- 12:21Speaker 5: should be completed by no later than the spring and
- 12:23Speaker 5: summer of twenty seven, and we should.
- 12:24Speaker 2: Wash their hands this and be done.
- 12:25Speaker 5: Everybody's shopping and shopping and eating and having a good time.
- 12:28Speaker 2: How things gone over all. You mentioned Jefferson Road with
- 12:31Speaker 2: the jail. I was through there late one night last
- 12:34Speaker 2: week and had been in southern part of the state.
- 12:37Speaker 2: For me, living in Putnam County, it's always easy to
- 12:39Speaker 2: get off that Davis Creek and kind of bypass everything.
- 12:41Speaker 2: Just amazed at the at the ease of getting through
- 12:45Speaker 2: there now and the improvement.
- 12:46Speaker 5: It's been amazing, and it's done exactly what we hoped
- 12:48Speaker 5: it will do, which is keep that continuous flow of
- 12:50Speaker 5: traffic going going out to Quarter g Now, whether you're
- 12:53Speaker 5: going to Low's or going to get something to eat
- 12:55Speaker 5: or wherever you're going, it's just so much easier time.
- 12:58Speaker 2: I'm through there four or five times a day.
- 13:00Speaker 5: I live in Spring Hills City Halls, and you know downtown,
- 13:02Speaker 5: I'm down there going through it a bunch and then
- 13:05Speaker 5: just the fact and your your muscle memory still tells
- 13:07Speaker 5: you when you see a train like, oh no, there's
- 13:09Speaker 5: a train up.
- 13:09Speaker 2: What I'm going to do?
- 13:10Speaker 5: But then you realize I don't have to fool with
- 13:11Speaker 5: that anymore? Right, So it's just that is that is
- 13:15Speaker 5: that upgrade was so needed. Uh, and it's done exactly
- 13:18Speaker 5: what we thought it would do. I think, Dame, You're right,
- 13:19Speaker 5: so convenient.
- 13:20Speaker 2: So Charleston, maryor Frank mant it's always a pleasure to

- 16:34Speaker 2: He of course passed away twenty fifteen. Here to talk
- 16:37Speaker 2: about his good friend and what's going on tomorrow this
- 16:40Speaker 2: ceremony is the head coach of the men's basketball team,
- 16:43Speaker 2: the Yellow Jackets West Virginia State University, Brian port Good morning, Sarah,
- 16:46Speaker 2: Welcome to the show.
- 16:48Speaker 7: Good morning. Always a good time to be on your show,
- 16:52Speaker 7: and certainly anytime I get to talk about Earl Lloyd,
- 16:55Speaker 7: it makes it extra special.
- 16:57Speaker 2: You and I have talked coach several times over the
- 16:59Speaker 2: years about Earl Lloyd. But for those who may not know,
- 17:02Speaker 2: give us the bio of Earl Lloyd and why he's
- 17:05Speaker 2: so important to not only West Virginia State University, but
- 17:08Speaker 2: the culture of basketball and to be honest with you,
- 17:10Speaker 2: and not to engage in hyperbole, but the entire country.
- 17:17Speaker 7: Yeah. So, Earl came to the campus of wes Virginia
- 17:20Speaker 7: State in nineteen forty six and played for a coach
- 17:25Speaker 7: at that time was Mark Cardwell, and so Earle played
- 17:29Speaker 7: here from nineteen forty six to nineteen fifty. The nineteen
- 17:32Speaker 7: forty eight team was thirty and oh and the only
- 17:36Speaker 7: undefeated team in college basketball at any level, and so
- 17:40Speaker 7: they had obviously an outstanding team. At the end of
- 17:44Speaker 7: the nineteen fifty season, he was drafted by the Washington
- 17:47Speaker 7: Capitals in the ninth round of the NBA and went
- 17:52Speaker 7: on to make that team and then as the way
- 17:55Speaker 7: the schedule fell, because Chuck Cooper was actually the first
- 17:59Speaker 7: black player to get drafted, and who was drafted by
- 18:01Speaker 7: the Boston Celtics in the second round that year and
- 18:05Speaker 7: in Sweetwater Clifton was the first black player to sign
- 18:07Speaker 7: an NBA contract. But the way the schedule fell, Earl
- 18:11Speaker 7: became the first black basketball player to ever step foot
- 18:15Speaker 7: into a game in the NBA in cover thirty first
- 18:19Speaker 7: nineteen fifty the team folded. He spent year and a
- 18:23Speaker 7: half two years in the army. At that time, the
- 18:27Speaker 7: Korean War was going on. When he gets out of
- 18:30Speaker 7: the Army, the Syracuse Nationals, who is now the Sill
- 18:32Speaker 7: left his seventy six ers pick him up and he
- 18:36Speaker 7: becomes one of the first two black players to win
- 18:39Speaker 7: an NBA championship in nineteen fifty five. And then he
- 18:43Speaker 7: went on to finish his career with the Detroit Pistons
- 18:46Speaker 7: and he becomes the first black assistant coach in the
- 18:48Speaker 7: NBA with them, and then becomes the first black full
- 18:52Speaker 7: time head coach in the NBA as the year before that,
- 18:57Speaker 7: Bill Russell was a player slash coach for the Bass
- 19:00Speaker 7: and Celtics. So you know, Earl was, like I say,
- 19:03Speaker 7: he was a fantastic player, and he became the first
- 19:08Speaker 7: black player in the NBA, first black champion, first black
- 19:10Speaker 7: assistant coach, and the first black full time head coach
- 19:14Speaker 7: in the NBA. So he was quite the pioneer, tied to.
- 19:17Speaker 2: Coach Brian Porr West Virginia State University. Beyond all the
- 19:20Speaker 2: first he did coach and all of his accomplishments on
- 19:23Speaker 2: the court and on the sidelines and in the boardrooms, whatever.
- 19:27Speaker 2: What made Earl Lloyd, in your opinion, such a good
- 19:29Speaker 2: man is just such a good person.
- 19:32Speaker 7: He was just so humble. You know, he rarely talked
- 19:37Speaker 7: about himself and I could hardly ever get him to
- 19:42Speaker 7: even talk about the things that he did. I mean,
- 19:44Speaker 7: he wanted to talk about me and my family and
- 19:47Speaker 7: our program and how the team was doing and all
- 19:50Speaker 7: those things. And he would always even deflected Jackie Robinson,
- 19:55Speaker 7: who broke the color barrier in baseball a couple of
- 19:57Speaker 7: years before Earl did in basketball. And so I think
- 20:01Speaker 7: the the highest quality that he had was just, uh,
- 20:06Speaker 7: you know, his humility. And you know, we went we
- 20:09Speaker 7: went down and did a documentary after Earl had actually
- 20:13Speaker 7: went into the hospital and I had been there a
- 20:16Speaker 7: few years earlier, to his house and spent the night
- 20:19Speaker 7: with him, just to spend some time with him after
- 20:21Speaker 7: he had a stroke. But when we went back is
- 20:23Speaker 7: when I finally realized in his home in Crossfield, Tennessee,
- 20:27Speaker 7: which is where he retired, there was no picture, book, ball, trophy,
- 20:35Speaker 7: anything displayed anywhere in his house that ever told you
- 20:40Speaker 7: he played basketball, let alone that he was in the
- 20:43Speaker 7: Nase Smith Basketball Hall of Fame and he was the
- 20:46Speaker 7: first black player in the NBA. UH. He had all
- 20:49Speaker 7: of his UH and then even the Natesmith Basketball Hall
- 20:52Speaker 7: of Fame trophy was in a closet in his den,
- 20:56Speaker 7: in the floor. And so that just speaks volumes of
- 20:59Speaker 7: him and the way he was and just the human being.
- 21:03Speaker 12: That he was.
- 21:04Speaker 2: Coach, how much work do you and your fellow coaches
- 21:08Speaker 2: and students even the university, how much work goes into
- 21:11Speaker 2: making sure all student athletes and for that matter, all
- 21:13Speaker 2: students at State know about Earl Lloyd.
- 21:17Speaker 7: Well, for us, I mean every recruiting phone conversation or
- 21:23Speaker 7: visit or it starts with a Earl Lloyd tutorial, if
- 21:28Speaker 7: you will. And so I've asked every recruit I've ever
- 21:32Speaker 7: talked to in my twenty seven years now at West
- 21:35Speaker 7: Virginia State who was the first black player to ever
- 21:38Speaker 7: play in NBA. And I've only had one be able
- 21:41Speaker 7: to come up with his las name, and that's because
- 21:43Speaker 7: he was from Detroit. So, you know, I start all
- 21:47Speaker 7: of our conversations with our recruits, and I know our
- 21:50Speaker 7: admissions office. When they do a tour, they always bring
- 21:53Speaker 7: him through the Walker Convocation Center where we have the
- 21:56Speaker 7: statue of Earl Lloyd there, and so I know our
- 22:00Speaker 7: missions people. They also educate all the kids that come
- 22:04Speaker 7: on visits to our school about Earl and so and
- 22:07Speaker 7: I really think, you know that our university and the
- 22:09Speaker 7: NBA this year especially has really stepped up because this
- 22:13Speaker 7: year is the seventy five year anniversary of those three gentlemen,
- 22:19Speaker 7: you know, breaking the color barrier into the NBA, and
- 22:23Speaker 7: myself and our Vice president Trey Jones. A couple of
- 22:26Speaker 7: weeks ago, on a Sunday, they had the NBA Pioneer Game,
- 22:30Speaker 7: which they just started this year, and so they had
- 22:34Speaker 7: us come up to Boston to watch the Celtics play
- 22:38Speaker 7: and they honored us as well as Sweetwater. Clifton's family
- 22:43Speaker 7: member was there and Chuck Cooper I was there as well.
- 22:46Speaker 7: So the NBA has really done a great job. This
- 22:48Speaker 7: year being the seventy five year anniversary, and hopefully the
- 22:52Speaker 7: momentum that we've gained with this and everybody talking about
- 22:55Speaker 7: it because it's the seventy five year will carry over
- 22:58Speaker 7: and we can educate more people about what these guys did.
- 23:03Speaker 2: And I'm happy to hear that you're educating, Coach, not
- 23:06Speaker 2: only your players and potential recruits, but that the university president,
- 23:11Speaker 2: Cage and all the others are are trying to impart
- 23:14Speaker 2: upon their students in general, whether they're an that student
- 23:17Speaker 2: athlete or not, the importance of Earl Loyd because this
- 23:20Speaker 2: Earl Lloyd story, And I'll admit, until I met you,
- 23:24Speaker 2: I wasn't aware I've heard the name, but I wasn't aware.
- 23:26Speaker 2: You educated me a lot of the last several years
- 23:29Speaker 2: on this whole thing, and all of our interviews we've done.
- 23:31Speaker 2: I think it's a great story. If the man had
- 23:35Speaker 2: never picked up a basketball, Earl Lloyd would have been
- 23:38Speaker 2: a major major success story, especially coming out of West
- 23:41Speaker 2: Virginia State.
- 23:43Speaker 7: Absolutely, and you know, and not only you know we
- 23:46Speaker 7: talk about his basketball. He went on as you and
- 23:49Speaker 7: I have discussed as well, but he went on to
- 23:52Speaker 7: work for Chrysler Corporation, become the first black executive for Chrysler,
- 23:57Speaker 7: and then he goes on to work for Dave Bing
- 23:59Speaker 7: when he was the mayor of Detroit. And so, I
- 24:03Speaker 7: mean he did things outside of basketball as well, which
- 24:05Speaker 7: was very groundbreaking. And he was just such a like
- 24:09Speaker 7: I say, such a humble, caring, well rounded intellectual guy
- 24:17Speaker 7: that that the people that you know just read about
- 24:20Speaker 7: what he did. Yeah, that's that's really good. And and
- 24:24Speaker 7: you know you can learn his ground very breaking steps
- 24:28Speaker 7: into the NBA. But for me, you know, I got
- 24:31Speaker 7: to meet him in two thousand and four when we
- 24:34Speaker 7: brought him back to retire his jersey, and then I
- 24:37Speaker 7: got to spend a good ten eleven years with him
- 24:41Speaker 7: and got to know him on a personal level. And
- 24:43Speaker 7: I'm just so blessed that I had that opportunity.
- 24:45Speaker 2: So tomorrow, twelve thirty, there's going to be a ceremony
- 24:47Speaker 2: at the Walker Convocation Center. You'll be there, President Eric Cage,
- 24:51Speaker 2: I athleted to director David Hicks. More should be a
- 24:53Speaker 2: nice ceremony tomorrow, Coach.
- 24:54Speaker 7: It always is, Yes, it will, And you know tomorrow's
- 24:58Speaker 7: the day that he away. He was was on the
- 25:01Speaker 7: twenty sixth and twenty fifteen, so ten year anniversary of that.
- 25:05Speaker 7: And it's good that, you know, the whole university is
- 25:09Speaker 7: gathering tomorrow to honor him with a short little ceremony,
- 25:13Speaker 7: be a couple of speakers, but you know, we always
- 25:16Speaker 7: like to pay homage to to to Earl and what
- 25:21Speaker 7: he did for the university and continues to do for me.
- 25:24Speaker 7: I mean, you know, my opportunity to get to go
- 25:27Speaker 7: and watch the Celtics play I think they played the Bucks.
- 25:31Speaker 7: Giannis was out so I didn't get see end play.
- 25:34Speaker 7: But that was all just because of Earl Lloyd, and
- 25:36Speaker 7: so I continue to, you know, reap the benefits of
- 25:40Speaker 7: Earl Lloyd and the friend that he was for me.
- 25:44Speaker 2: Coach, on a more personal note, before we let you go,
- 25:47Speaker 2: it's been a rough season emotionally for your team with
- 25:50Speaker 2: loss of course of a great player. Talk about how
- 25:52Speaker 2: your team has done getting through all that.
- 25:56Speaker 7: Yeah, it has been you know, just one that there's
- 26:00Speaker 7: no playbook four and there's no there's no script for it.
- 26:04Speaker 7: So you know, I thought I had, you know, pretty
- 26:08Speaker 7: much faced everything there is in the coaching world in
- 26:11Speaker 7: twenty six years of being the head coach, and uh,
- 26:14Speaker 7: this one certainly is one that I don't wish upon anybody.
- 26:19Speaker 7: And and not only you know with this is passing
- 26:21Speaker 7: and and the struggles that we had from that, but
- 26:24Speaker 7: we've had multiple injuries outside of that as well, and
- 26:28Speaker 7: so it's it's it's been a struggle. We've put it
- 26:31Speaker 7: together here a little bit the last couple of weeks
- 26:33Speaker 7: and we've won three out of four and started to
- 26:35Speaker 7: play a little bit better and and so hopefully, you know,
- 26:39Speaker 7: we can close out the season this week. We play
- 26:42Speaker 7: at Concord tonight and then we have Charleston at home
- 26:44Speaker 7: on Saturday, and then then go into our tournament. And
- 26:47Speaker 7: so it has been a struggle. I really commend our
- 26:51Speaker 7: players for, you know, then then sticking to it and
- 26:54Speaker 7: and and staying together and and sticking through the grind.
- 26:57Speaker 7: And so we just hope we can finish out the
- 27:00Speaker 7: season strong.
- 27:01Speaker 2: Coach Brian Poor, West Virginia Statement's basketball coach. It's always

- 32:22Speaker 2: has always got stuff going on, does mister Strawn. So
- 32:27Speaker 2: we'll talk to him comeing up on the show tomorrow.
- 32:32Speaker 2: All right, So before we get to say to the union,
- 32:35Speaker 2: something a little personal for me. And if you follow
- 32:39Speaker 2: me on social media Dave Allen Radio and Facebook and
- 32:41Speaker 2: at Dave A seventy one x and if you don't,
- 32:43Speaker 2: well you should be. Did a little video about this
- 32:48Speaker 2: last night. And let me back up a bit, just
- 32:54Speaker 2: kind of gets you up here. About two years ago
- 32:58Speaker 2: I went for a simple medical check up and they
- 33:02Speaker 2: were concerned at that time about my blood work, you know,
- 33:04Speaker 2: particularly PSA level, and of course I did what most
- 33:08Speaker 2: men do. I said thank you and ignored their warnings
- 33:11Speaker 2: and left. Then I went back like six months later
- 33:16Speaker 2: for you know, check up, and the doctor says, well,
- 33:19Speaker 2: did you ever get those PSA?
- 33:20Speaker 6: No?
- 33:21Speaker 2: No, I didn't. And so then I went back again
- 33:25Speaker 2: and my family doctor, of which I didn't even have
- 33:28Speaker 2: a family doctor this time two years ago, welcome to
- 33:30Speaker 2: you know, being in your mid fifties. And I walked
- 33:33Speaker 2: back and he said, we're going to send to you,
- 33:34Speaker 2: you know, to do some more blood work. And when
- 33:36Speaker 2: I went back, and this was in the fall of
- 33:38Speaker 2: last year, twenty twenty five, he said, you know, your
- 33:41Speaker 2: PSA levels have risen dramatically since the previous year and
- 33:47Speaker 2: basically said, you have got to take this seriously and
- 33:49Speaker 2: address this. And that began a series of scans and biopsies.
- 33:54Speaker 2: You've been through this, you know what I'm talking about.
- 33:56Speaker 2: MRIs poke prod and so on and so forth. And
- 33:59Speaker 2: they they told me last month, which I have been
- 34:02Speaker 2: very open about on social media and on the air.
- 34:04Speaker 2: They told me last month I have prostate cancer. And
- 34:06Speaker 2: so I had an appointment with one of the doctors yesterday.
- 34:11Speaker 2: And if you can find good news in bad news,
- 34:17Speaker 2: I already knew that I had prostate cancer, but I
- 34:20Speaker 2: was very relieved to find out that the cancer had
- 34:23Speaker 2: not spread. They were concerned about the not so much
- 34:29Speaker 2: the number that I was given on the Gleason score.
- 34:35Speaker 2: I'll trust me, I've learned way too much about it.
- 34:37Speaker 2: And it has nothing to do with Jackie Gleason, by
- 34:38Speaker 2: the way. I found that out. And the PSA level
- 34:41Speaker 2: so on and so forth I found all this out.
- 34:43Speaker 2: They told me it wasn't how high the number was,
- 34:48Speaker 2: it was that it was growing so rapidly, and they said,
- 34:52Speaker 2: we got to get this checked out to make sure
- 34:53Speaker 2: it's not spreading, because it's on the path to spread everywhere.
- 34:58Speaker 2: And luckily found out yesterday that has not been the case.
- 35:03Speaker 2: So I said, it's about the best good news I
- 35:06Speaker 2: could get in the midst of bad news.
- 35:09Speaker 1: You know.
- 35:09Speaker 2: They told me I have cancer, but it's not spread.
- 35:13Speaker 2: And I've learned way too much about prostates in the
- 35:15Speaker 2: last couple of months. To be quite honest with you,
- 35:17Speaker 2: I will tell you I have zero symptoms of anything.
- 35:20Speaker 2: I don't feel badly at all. I just have cancer.
- 35:23Speaker 2: So now the treatments begin, and at some point over
- 35:26Speaker 2: the next couple of weeks, I'll start radiation treatments somewhere
- 35:31Speaker 2: between five to ten don't know. I don't know exactly
- 35:35Speaker 2: how many yet, it all depends. All outpatient stuff. Maybe
- 35:40Speaker 2: last fifteen minutes or so, and I'm done. I'll do
- 35:43Speaker 2: that once or twice a week and then evaluate from there.
- 35:48Speaker 2: Side effects, Well, everyone is different. I'm hanging my hat
- 35:53Speaker 2: on the fact that in the limited amount of medical
- 35:55Speaker 2: issues I've been lucky not to go through hardly anything
- 35:59Speaker 2: in my life. You know, I've had doctors that have
- 36:02Speaker 2: told me I'm the perfect patient because I'm not allergic
- 36:04Speaker 2: to anything. I generally speaking medicines, if I take them
- 36:07Speaker 2: when I do, which is not often do what they're
- 36:10Speaker 2: supposed to do. I have the most common blood type
- 36:13Speaker 2: that there is, so you kind of get where I'm
- 36:15Speaker 2: going now. They do tell me I'm going to be tired,
- 36:19Speaker 2: maybe hot flash, so basically I'm going to be going
- 36:22Speaker 2: through menopause. So if I am away from here, you'll
- 36:28Speaker 2: know why. And I'm the type of guy who does
- 36:31Speaker 2: not believe in taking time off, you know, for anything.
- 36:34Speaker 2: In fact, I had to have a sit down yesterday
- 36:38Speaker 2: with our HR department here to learn how much time
- 36:40Speaker 2: I had off because I literally did not know. I mean,
- 36:43Speaker 2: I take a few days in the spring. My wife
- 36:45Speaker 2: and I used to do a beach trip somewhere. That's
- 36:47Speaker 2: pretty much it. And I had to sit down with
- 36:50Speaker 2: our HR department, which anytime I'm called to the HR department,
- 36:53Speaker 2: it's usually for something else is Ryan will tell you.
- 36:56Speaker 2: So I sat down and I said, how much time
- 36:59Speaker 2: do I even get off? Because I had I had
- 37:01Speaker 2: no idea. I get that from my late father. I mean,
- 37:04Speaker 2: I just I just don't. I don't see what I
- 37:06Speaker 2: do here is work to be honest with you, So
- 37:08Speaker 2: I don't. I don't really want to be away, but
- 37:10Speaker 2: I'm gonna I'm gonna do better on that promise my wife.
- 37:12Speaker 2: I'm actually gonna do better at that. So I just
- 37:14Speaker 2: wanted to get out there. Good bad news. Cancer hasn't spread.
- 37:17Speaker 2: Something like a ninety six percent survival rate in prostate cancer,
- 37:21Speaker 2: one of the better cancers. You know, if you're gonna
- 37:24Speaker 2: get cancer, one of the better ones to get. I
- 37:26Speaker 2: guess I'll I'll keep you up. But one thing that
- 37:29Speaker 2: you can be assured of is that one way or
- 37:30Speaker 2: the other, I'm gonna continue to make fun of it
- 37:33Speaker 2: because that's what I do. And had they told me
- 37:35Speaker 2: yesterday you know this is spread, guess what I would
- 37:39Speaker 2: have done. I would have made fun of it, because
- 37:42Speaker 2: that's what I do. It's a sickness sixteen minutes away
- 37:45Speaker 2: from Tamaday Island show on five ad Line, brought to
- 37:47Speaker 2: you part by your hometown baseball team, The Charles the
- 37:49Speaker 2: Dirty Birds. Maybe one a time. Now we're already thinking
- 37:51Speaker 2: about baseball go Mark Ballpark. Now'd be a good time
- 37:54Speaker 2: to secure your season tickets merchandise more at dirty Birds
- 37:56Speaker 2: Baseball dot com. So I want to ask you about
- 38:01Speaker 2: my urine here, Ryan, Dave. Do do you pee every
- 38:05Speaker 2: ninety minutes or two hours at night?
- 38:07Speaker 13: No?
- 38:07Speaker 2: I don't do either. I go to bed and I
- 38:09Speaker 2: wake up four thirty or five and get up. I
- 38:12Speaker 2: don't no issues in that department whatsoever. Never have had
- 38:16Speaker 2: any issue in that department. All right, So State of
- 38:20Speaker 2: the Union last night, President awarded two purple hearts last
- 38:23Speaker 2: night's start There start Positive, one to Air National Guard
- 38:26Speaker 2: staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe, who, as expected, was in attendance
- 38:32Speaker 2: last night with his family. Also another awarded posthumously to
- 38:36Speaker 2: Army National Guard specialist Sarah Beckstrom. President talked about five
- 38:40Speaker 2: minutes or so on that it's a lead story this
- 38:43Speaker 2: morning wv Metronews dot com, and we're going to dive
- 38:46Speaker 2: more into that speech, play a little audio from it
- 38:48Speaker 2: at some point. I'm sure you've heard it a lot
- 38:50Speaker 2: of but we're going to play more as it pertains
- 38:52Speaker 2: to the guardsman coming up on midday to day. As
- 38:56Speaker 2: for the rest of the speech, one hour and forty
- 38:59Speaker 2: eight minutes total, longest State of the Union speech in history.
- 39:04Speaker 2: I asked on midday yesterday for people to give me
- 39:06Speaker 2: the over under, and I don't remember what I said.
- 39:08Speaker 2: I should have wrote it down. I think I said
- 39:11Speaker 2: like an hour fifty two or something random like that.
- 39:13Speaker 2: So if that's what I said, which I think I did,
- 39:15Speaker 2: I was pretty close. President primarily told the story of
- 39:19Speaker 2: America's great turnaround quote hottest country in the world end quote.
- 39:24Speaker 2: He told Democrats they should be ashamed of themselves for
- 39:27Speaker 2: not standing up when he said, quote the first duty
- 39:30Speaker 2: of the American government is to protect American citizens, not
- 39:33Speaker 2: illegal aliens end quote. Republicans stood, many Democrats did not.
- 39:39Speaker 2: He talked about Iran, talked about tariffs, He mocked the
- 39:43Speaker 2: Democrats on affordability, continued to talk about voter fraud. At
- 39:48Speaker 2: one point, Representative Al Green of Texas escorted out for
- 39:51Speaker 2: holding up a black people aren't apes sign etc. Etc.
- 39:58Speaker 2: And so so pretty much what everybody expected it would be.
- 40:06Speaker 2: So let's get to some text, because I knew we
- 40:09Speaker 2: would have text, says Trump's speech last night. Again, prusse

- 40:44Speaker 2: Now he says, you don't have the right to bear arms.
- 40:47Speaker 2: It's up to him, says a texture Tex says, how
