- 2:14Port. Port is America's favorite wine, you know. So it's the perfect
- 2:16wine to express your hospitality and friendship. And believe me, when it comes
- 2:21to real enjoyment, there's no port like pet Report. It has a beautiful,
- 2:25deep ruby red color and the flavor hmm, it's absolutely delicious. Pet
- 2:30Report has such a marvelous, rich, fruity taste it's no wonder everyone loves
- 2:35it. Believe me, a glass of pet Report is real proof that the
- 2:38Petrie family took time to bring you good wine. So have plenty of pet
- 2:44Report on hand for your big day Thursday, and be sure it's pet Report,
- 2:49because all Petrie wines are good wine. Well, once again, it's
- 3:08Monday night in San Francisco and time for our weekly visit with Gregory Hood and
- 3:13his friend and attorney Sanders and Taylor. Tonight's adventure out of the Case.
- 3:16Both begins in a small but select bar on Garry Street. The LIFs are
- 3:21discreetly low, the furnishings tasteful, and in the background, the juke box
- 3:24plays an appropriate accompaniment. Just the sort of place we'd expect to find Greg
- 3:29and Sandy five o'clock after a day's work, and that's precisely where we do
- 3:32find it. Oh see, Greg, I meant to tell you I've run
- 3:37into a small legal snag for that contract from Hong Kong. You have too
- 3:40better. Oh Greg, you weren't even listening, John, Oh, frankly,
- 3:45I was under the spell of that record of art Tatum's. That left
- 3:46hand to his is magic listener. Oh yes, I'm sure it's whatever you
- 3:52say. It is just the same drink. I'd like to talk to you
- 3:53about the Hong Kong deal. Now, Hooton Company has a lot of money
- 3:57at stake. I find it hard to concentrate on the niceties of leg problems
- 4:00while mister Tatum's beating his way out of this one. You made it,
- 4:08okay, Sandy, The floor is yours, But go easy with the here
- 4:11too poison. Whereas well, Greg, now here's the situation. Chong Lee,
- 4:15our representative in Hong Kong, has worked out an exclusive deal with the
- 4:17important house of Sioux Lai. Lie. Uh huh. I've done a lot
- 4:20of business with them in the past. What's houring us? The problem of
- 4:24exchange? Greg, They want us to post dollars. They're paying at a
- 4:27fixed exchange, begging the exchange. I don't buy that, no do I.
- 4:30I maintain that we do business we did in the past, lading bills
- 4:32with shipments payable in sixty days a current rate of exchange. Now here's another
- 4:36angle. I don't have to talk with firs. Look at this apparition that
- 4:40just came in. Huh oh, Greg, can't I keep your mind on
- 4:44business for two consecutive minutes. Oh, she's coming to your table. Good
- 4:51evening, mister Gregoryhood. Yes, and missus Sanderson Taylor, do sit down?
- 4:57Won't you miss the miss my name is Lisa Duncan. Oh uh uh
- 5:01uh, how I miss? How do you do that? Will you sit
- 5:03down and have a drink with us? They have a wonderful sherry. No,
- 5:06thank you. I can only stay for a moment. I've brought you
- 5:10a message. Oh. I couldn't be happier, though, I don't know
- 5:12how you found them. Well, that was simple. I went to your
- 5:14office and they told me you'd come here. Well, how do you recognize
- 5:16me? Then? We've never met before. It's my business to know certain
- 5:20people whose sounds very mysterious mostaan ka. I'm rather exciting, though I'm not
- 5:25quite sure which particular category of certain people I fall into. Oh, what's
- 5:30the message? Meet me at the fourth Gerda from the middle on Golden Gate
- 5:32Bridge at midnight, and the jewels are mine. I'm serious. What's the
- 5:36message? I bring you? The message of the White Master's mister hood.
- 5:41Perhaps the message has already reached you. Have you heard the call to a
- 5:45full new life? No? But it sounds like fun. The old life
- 5:47was getting a little dull around the edges, isn't it? You as a
- 5:49tutor in front of me, This is the most important message of your life.
- 5:54The White Masters wish you to read this. I'll see you again,
- 5:58mister Jonasssda know. Let her go, Greg, let her go. She's
- 6:01crazy, maybe with beautiful crazy walking in here, handing you a tract and
- 6:08then waltzing out of you. Well, let's see what her little handbill says.
- 6:12Let's see what it is. The League of White Masters. Stephen Satha,
- 6:18wait speak tonight at the Golden Day Audiencetoria, come and learn your potential
- 6:23power. The propaganda lin has a familiar ring. But I go about meeting
- 6:29tonight, Sammy, why Gray, just to track down your track meeting God?
- 6:31How much more than that? The name Setho Weight rings a bell somewhere.
- 6:35I have a hunch the White Masters aren't as spotless as they sound.
- 6:39Make a day with your Sami, Okay, I'll buy another drink for you
- 6:42and listen to your headaches on the Hong Kong deal. If after that,
- 6:45I know Greg, After that we go to the Golden Day Auditorium in search
- 6:48of the full new life. And what can you do to bring this power
- 7:02back to yourselves? Use your own pa, my friends, the true paws
- 7:09that go to you through the white Fosters, and my good friends from these
- 7:17white fosters in the other dimension. I bring this decic to you, to
- 7:23your pals, the paws of light. You come back the paws about this?
- 7:28Have you build a righteous strong and come on Satday, let's pet them?
- 7:34Okay? Then was I writer your own brother? Look at the eyes
- 7:42of all these people. Gives me the crees somehow to feeling his I had
- 7:46seen them before, you have, Remember in Berlin before the war. Yeah,
- 7:53remember that rally at the sports Palace, the Nazis. They're the same
- 7:57people, same one as you see in this country, the rallies of homegrown
- 8:01fascism, the small ones, the worn outs, the failures who needed someone
- 8:07to blame their failure on. Eh, the lunatic fringe. That's all we
- 8:11thought the Nazis once were. Eh. It's nauzyating. Great, Yeah,
- 8:15a constant and ringing repetition of the word white. It sounds noble and harmless,
- 8:22but the implication is dangerous. MM. Free speech. Yeah, if
- 8:24anyone had got up and thrown a few questions back at'em, sure,
- 8:28sure the goon squad would have beat them up and thrown them out of here
- 8:30in no time. We need to see the strong armed boys lying around the
- 8:35walls here watching every exity. Oh ahead of us is a prize specimen.
- 8:41Chicled Grover should have lived to see this. What's a matter of fuddy?
- 8:46Didn't you like it? No, buddy, I didn't you wanna make something
- 8:48out of it? Nah? Not this time. Just wanted to remember your
- 8:52face. That's so funny, like a good luck you'll say it again.
- 8:54Sure, too bad if someone was to push it around a little. Yeah,
- 9:01nice guy? Who was he? Look great? Here's the girl we
- 9:05saw in the barber seeing. Yeah, it calls at the full new life
- 9:09swastickers with lace trimming. Get any miss Duncan, mister hood. I'm so
- 9:13glad you came. But why are you leaving? Now? The meeting is
- 9:16not half over. It's over why I was working? Then you don't agree
- 9:20with our belief that's a monumental understatement. But I'm very happy I came.
- 9:26My fair white Messenger's given me a job to do. We're unusually silent standing.
- 9:43Ah, I was thinking about that meeting to night. Greaton getting madder,
- 9:46man goes, I, why are you going to Berkeley? You're gonna
- 9:50see a friend of mine who knows plenty about homegrown rackets such as the white
- 9:54Master. Uh huh? Who is your friend? Professor Gordon Lewis, late
- 9:58of Benton University? That's who? Oh? Yes, I read about him.
- 10:03Wasn't he fired recently after some rather dubious maneuverings of campus politics. Done
- 10:07so just the same. Professor Lewis is a great scholar, knows everything about
- 10:09cults from Dambala, the god of voodoo to Shambala. They're hidden retreat in
- 10:13Tibet, which some people call shangri Are. But surely Savo Wait's speech tonight
- 10:18wasn't as profound at all. That no, but the basic roots that motivated
- 10:20the plenty o. I'll bet you that when I tell Professor Lewis the gist
- 10:24of tonight's little spiel, he'll be able to analyze it for us, show
- 10:26us its true origin, perhaps give us a clue to mister sephowit. If
- 10:31we can get it as roots, maybe we can chop him down. And
- 10:43that's why we've come to you, Professor Lewis. Well, gentlemen, I
- 10:46shall do everything in my power to help. Great tells me you know more
- 10:50about these things than any other man in the country. Mister hood is kind,
- 10:54more so than some I could name. All of my life. I've
- 10:58devoted to this study now at my age, to be a man without a
- 11:01profession, without even a job. But how can I help you, gentlemen?
- 11:07Well, you see so it seemed to me that behind those cleverly phrased
- 11:09jingos, sathaweight was echoing tonight lie the pattern a philosophy developed from some earlier
- 11:15cult that's proved successful. You're right, mister Hood, and I've studied them
- 11:18all. I've investigated every odd cult that I've come in touch with, and
- 11:22joined most of them undersue names, of course, I see to study their
- 11:26inner working. I suppose yes, mister Taylor, and I've taken the certain
- 11:31perverse pleasure when joining a new cub by adopting the name of a god that
- 11:35had been prominently mentioned in some other cut long since disbanded. What do you
- 11:39think about the slant of Sethurwaite and his White Master's dogma. I think you
- 11:43were quite right in your own analysis, my boy. Its obvious trend is
- 11:48antisocial h and you think it's more than an organized rap or mister Taylor's to
- 11:54his elements the concept of divine figures acting through human agency. Of course,
- 11:58that's an old theory, Savawit sounds if he's tied in not only with several
- 12:03occult systems of belief, but also several far from occult thinkers who know the
- 12:09valuable powers of the superstition they trade on it for their own ends. I'll
- 12:15check on the facts that you've given me more in detail. But then you
- 12:18think you can find out what forces the back of this deal, Professor.
- 12:20I think so. From the facts that you've given me, it shouldn't be
- 12:22hard to find out just who's behind this movement within twenty four hours. I'll
- 12:26draw you a diagram through which you ought to be able to trace Savoy Weight
- 12:30right back to his slimy origin. Hey, honest, thanks, driver up
- 12:46and give me busy tonight. Yeah quite in the mark just about his cold
- 12:52here. I can keep the change, thanks mister. And I know nine
- 13:11was that by the railing me? Another message for me off White Masters.
- 13:16I didn't know they delivered this late at night. Remarkable service, mister Wood.
- 13:18You don't understand. Hey, what's wrong with you? Shoulder? I
- 13:26wounded? Somebody shot it. We'll get me wrong. That's it. I'll
- 13:28get you upstairs and into my apartment. Hi, I came to see you,
- 13:35Dan. I'll get a doctor. You can tell me the story upstairs.
- 13:46Ah, hell yeah, I hold on a minute. I'll get my
- 13:48key. Be careful, mister Hood. Oh then you come. That's it.
- 14:00I'll switch on a light. It's my man's night off. Oh yeah,
- 14:03Now I'll get to the phone behind those curtains. Welcoming Committee of three
- 14:09lids. You can help, Shall I get the girls? Then let him
- 14:13out it? Hug you don't all right? Try this one on Gobby's arms.
- 14:18Went still on your feet of this serpent. That's right, three white
- 14:24superman. I told you at the meeting tonight that you might get that pretty
- 14:26pussy years worked over a little. I stress on, very courageous with two
- 14:31of your goons holding me. Shut up your head loudly, a polite to
- 14:37answer that funny Take a black jack to him, charl Let's really work on
- 14:39him. Yeah, give it to me. Let's see if we can feed
- 14:43a little sense in. You're dirty. No, let's see how smart you
- 14:48can get. Missed a Hood. Come on, guys, let's get out
- 14:50of here at the post great Hood better get over to my apartment right away.
- 15:41We'll continue with Gregory Hood's story in just a moment. Meanwhile, I
- 15:46wanna remind you again of that big Beast day coming up Thursday. And you
- 15:50know what, it makes a swell dessert fruitcake with Petrie California port. Honestly,
- 15:54they're wonderful together. Fruitcake is traditional for Thanksgiving, of course, and
- 16:00petrie'sport makes a wonderful companion for fruitcake. It's such a beautiful wine, a
- 16:03deep ruby red in color, and Petpreport has a marvelous, rich, full
- 16:07bodied flavor that goes perfectly with fruitcake. Honestly, pet Report is one of
- 16:12the most delicious wines ever poured from a bottle. Your guests will love it,
- 16:17and you can serve pet Report proudly because those five letters P E t
- 16:22R I spelled the proudest name in the long history of fine wines. Petrie
- 16:32Adal back to the case book of Gregory Hood had the Adventure of the White
- 16:34Masters. Two hours have passed and a doctor has visited Gregg's apartment and treated
- 16:38both greg and Lisa. As we rejoin our story, Sandy Taylor hastily summoned
- 16:44from his home at Berkeley as talking to the girl Lisa and the much battered
- 16:47Gregory hoode Ah, you didn't know, gh awful? How about you,
- 16:52Lisa? I'm all right, Gregory, She's a lucky thing. You ran
- 16:55for the cops, miss Duncan. They picked up one of the men anyway,
- 16:57they're holding in the next room here. I want to talk to him,
- 17:00greg done right, I do. First of all, I want to
- 17:03strike out a few things about you and Lisa, if you're a white master,
- 17:07where did you get shot at? Where did you bother to go for
- 17:08the police. It's very simple, Gregory, I've been investigating your organization,
- 17:14working on the inside. Don't tell me you're a ge one. No,
- 17:17my interest in these people is purely private and personal. Uh. You see,
- 17:22eight years ago, my father was beaten to death by a mob of
- 17:25hoodlums at a meeting just like the one you attended tonight. I'm sorry,
- 17:29Lisa. Oh, and so you approached Greg tonight and the hopes of intriguing
- 17:33he's well known curiosity. Yes, I did. I wasn't getting far enough
- 17:37in my own investigations, so I decided to approach him. Oh then they
- 17:41shot at you, miss dumping, because they must have figured you were on
- 17:44the wrong side of the fence. Yes, they must have followed me here
- 17:47from the meeting tonight, saw that I was going to Greg reason tried to
- 17:49silence me. We know that, we know we're on the same side.
- 17:52Let's have our brave friend. Okay, I'll get him there. Incidentally,
- 17:56Lisa, we went over to Berkeley to night and saw Professor Lewis. Professor,
- 18:00I think I've heard of him. He's helping us. Put the finger
- 18:02on mister seth await in his crown and you come in no officer, okay,
- 18:04mister Taylor, go on in, Limb, but no trick. How
- 18:07can I pull anything when you got the bracelets? Only we're watch them come
- 18:11on them here, he is, hun do nothing. Let me alone.
- 18:17Listen, Limb, You've done plenty. Really wish I felt up to seeing
- 18:19how you'd like to take some of the medicine you boys dish out to me
- 18:22a little really, He then slugger, how with Joe? Look, Limb,
- 18:25Uh, I'm an attorney. They'll book you on a stiff battery charge.
- 18:29But up myst' just doing what I was told. I ain't one of
- 18:33the big boars. My friend can probably get you off of the nominal sentence
- 18:37if you want to play ball, Limb, I might even decide not to
- 18:40prefer charges if you'll open that big mouth of yours into a little talking.
- 18:42Yeah, what'sentiph Only we might persuade the police to give you a birth But
- 18:48if you don't talk, we can make out a sweet case of assault with
- 18:51intent to kill. And that means san quentin and not for any one Night's
- 18:53stand okay, I'll talk. What do you want to know? What the
- 18:57big shots back of this rocket at yours unless they satow. Wi's the only
- 19:00one I know. But there are some other big guys in town right now.
- 19:06They're holding a meeting tomorrow night. Where will they hold a meeting.
- 19:10It's sent a fleet tumbp ho toune on touch and the big shots are meeting
- 19:12that tomorrow night. You say, lamb, Yeah, that's what Joe was
- 19:15telling me. I'm not in very good shape to do much clear thinking,
- 19:18Sandy, but one thing I do know. We've got to organize some way
- 19:22of listening in on that meeting tomorrow night. And they're feeling better this morning.
- 19:33Grave sure, but that was only logical. I couldn't be feeling worse
- 19:36than I did. Lat You check with miss down. Yes, I called
- 19:37it just before I came down here. You're doing fine, just raring to
- 19:41listen in on that meeting tonight. How the plans come all fine? Fine?
- 19:45It costs a small part of the good fortune to fix it. I
- 19:48arrived the hotel. Man, We've got the room next to the one of
- 19:49the crowd had been used. Tick the phone equipment being installed. We're all
- 19:52set tonight to listen in i'm a meeting and get a complete record of their
- 19:55discussions. That'll make prippy reading for the authority. Hello, Gregor, this
- 20:02is Professor Lewis. Hello there, How are you coming with your investigations.
- 20:03I think I have some interesting data for you. Perhaps we could meet tonight
- 20:07and discuss the matter. I'd like to, but it'll have to be this
- 20:10side of the bay where he was dropping on Sathaway dinner Council meeting tonight.
- 20:14Join us for dinner. We'll tell you all about it legitim. You have
- 20:25the appropriate with the White Masters for the next six months. Moth. I'm
- 20:29horrible, even worse than I imagined. Yes, those carefully worked out plans
- 20:33for inciting race riots in West Oakland. Well, that's potential murder. It'll
- 20:37be prevented as soon as we turn these dictaphone records over to the authorities.
- 20:41I'm getting don worried about Professor Lewis. This am I. He didn't show
- 20:45up for dinner. We called him twice from here and got no answer.
- 20:48Do you suppose the goon squad had gone after him? Could be they would
- 20:51have to lease and me. They could easily have found out that the professor
- 20:53was in with us too. Yeah, way, I think the meeting has
- 20:57broken up. Next dinner. I can't hear anybody said perhaps we should go
- 21:02in search their room. I don't mind doubt if we'd find anything except the
- 21:04strong smell of skunk. Wait a minute, they haven't all gone. What
- 21:08did you think? It's? What's the matter with you? You don't think
- 21:17you can get control of this organization. Greg Sathaway's dying and his murderer got
- 21:37away, But we'll get him suck Away. I'm not saying you didn't get
- 21:40what you had coming to you, but tell us who did it. He's
- 21:44trying to talk who shot you? I shout he's dead with poetic words on
- 21:56his lips, yet words that sound like Ermine's soul. Well, at least
- 22:03the right guy got murried. I'm not sure this was murder for power,
- 22:07for the right to run this filthy organization. The killer's more evil even than
- 22:10Saturweight was. Sammy. I want you to call Lieutenant Silvers. Lisa and
- 22:14I will make a fast up across the Bay of Berkeley. Are you gonna
- 22:15call on a professor? Little way? Are? I hope we're not too
- 22:18late. Oh, I'm glad you came over here, mister hood, and
- 22:29you miss done. I wish we'd arrived in time to revent the attack on
- 22:32you, Professor. You say they attacked you as you were getting into your
- 22:33car. Yes, it's dark in the garage. I didn't see who it
- 22:37was. I felt this blow on the back of my head, and the
- 22:40next thing I knew I was lying beside the car. I managed to crawl
- 22:44into the house and telephone for a doctor, and he came and bandaged me
- 22:47up. Oh, but don't worry about me. Tell me more about the
- 22:49meeting the south. The weight is dead, you say, yes, But
- 22:53just as he died, he muttered the words Ermine's soul. I am glad
- 22:57that he died, but his killers still a large, Professor, but not
- 23:00for long. When your dictaphone records are turned in, the whole organization will
- 23:04be exploded and we'll be safe from these attacks. Those dying words puzzle me.
- 23:10Tell me. Can you think of anyone mixed up in these rackets who
- 23:11might be described as having an ermine soul? Hmm sounds inappropriate, doesn't it?
- 23:18Erman soul? Wait a minute, I know the man you want or
- 23:25yes, he's been mixed up in several of these subversive groups. His name's
- 23:29Irving Stole, Irving Stole ermine soul. Yes, Gregory, that might be
- 23:33the answer. We can put the authorities on the track and they'll locate him
- 23:37in no tack. Wait a minute, why didn't I spot it before?
- 23:40That cloud on the head last night must have been stronger than I thought.
- 23:42What are you talking about, Gregory, Professor Lewis, It's suddenly all very
- 23:45clear to me. Miss Duncan brought me into this case, and she was
- 23:48attacked. I went into it, and I was attacked. I brought you
- 23:51in or you've been attacked. But there were only four people who knew what
- 23:53our plans were before the attacks. Sandy, Lisa, you and me.
- 23:57Surely you're not suggesting this, not Lisa, What do you say, Professor?
- 24:03Obviously the White Masters have more deficient spies than we imagine. A reasonably
- 24:07convincing answer, Professor. If I hadn't just spotted that book on druidism on
- 24:11your shelf, you're being very crypticod how does a book on duids enter this
- 24:15discussion? Oh? It reminded me that there's an old druid god by the
- 24:18name of Ermine's soul. I R M I N s U L. That
- 24:22sounds exactly like Erman. And if you remember, Professor, you told mister
- 24:26Taylor and me when we called on you yesterday that it amused you to join
- 24:29new cults under the name of the deity who you can't possibly be stic I'm
- 24:33suggesting that you joined the White Masters with the intention of studying it from the
- 24:37inside. Then when you were fired from the university, became bitter, you
- 24:40became violently antisocial. You're talking rubbish, am I. You needed money too,
- 24:45and you knew how profitable those rackets are, and who knew better than
- 24:48you the inner workings of them. You tried to get rid of us as
- 24:51soon as you know we were working against you, and then you killed Sathaway.
- 24:53The then stage is an apparent attack against yourself. As an alibi,
- 24:57I can only assume, my dear boy, that the blow on your head
- 25:00was much more serious. Well, I'm done certain you didn't even get a
- 25:03blow in the head. Look at that bandage. I should have spotted it
- 25:06before. No doctor ever put on a bandage like that. But Greg,
- 25:07I don't understand the professor does, don't you White Master. You're implying that
- 25:11I killed Sethwick or you did, and then scrammed back here and bandaged yourself
- 25:15from this supposed attack that never took place. Assuming you were right, how
- 25:19do you think you could have approved? It? Wouldn't be hard. You
- 25:22see, the murderer never spoke up at the meeting. Sathaway commented on that
- 25:26fact just before he was killed. We have a record of all the other
- 25:29voices except the murderers. Why was he so silent all evening? Because he
- 25:33knew about the dictaphone and sawed in the next room. And the only person
- 25:36who knew that, beside the three of us who would to gather in one
- 25:37room, was you, Professor. You are more clever than I thought would
- 25:44But I also know your recitation about never going on. You won't be able
- 25:48to do much about this. Is he dead? No, he's not dead.
- 26:03Where were you hiding a gun? I shot him through my handbag.
- 26:11Why'd you learn a trick like that? Since my father's death, I've learned
- 26:15to be quite handy with a revolver, I'll see. I'm very grateful.
- 26:23You know, you're a remarkable girl. You're quite a remarkable man. Gretly.
- 26:32Oh, well, when we've delivered the Professor to the powers that day,
- 26:36let's go back to that bar where I first met you yesterday. I
- 26:38think we've both earned a drink and an opportunity to discuss that full new life
- 26:44you were talking about. Welcome Back. A surprisingly topical script for our final
- 27:06Elliott Lewis episode of the Case Book of Gregory Hood, and this concern about
- 27:11the emergence of kind of neo fascist at home was certainly covered on many programs,
- 27:18most notably The Adventures of Superman, where they went in a more full
- 27:22on direct attack on the Ku Klux Klan. While this is the last circulating
- 27:30episode of the Casebook of Gregory Hood, and I should say, of the
- 27:33six episodes that are missing, we only have titles for two of them,
- 27:40The Confucius Didn't Say from November fourth and the ten coup Minute Mystery from November
- 27:45eleventh of nineteen forty six. This was far from Elliott Lewis's actual last appearance.
- 27:56All those episodes are just scene. He had twenty six more episodes during
- 28:03the nineteen forty six forty seven season, and then in nineteen forty eight he
- 28:08took on the role of Gregory Hood for another fifty two weeks. So all
- 28:14told, he appeared as Gregory Hood in eighty eight episodes, compared to Gail
- 28:18Gordon's sixteen, but because of the ravages of time, only four of Elliott
- 28:26Lewis's episode survive, while ten of gil Gordon's. And of course there were
- 28:33other men to play Gregoryhood, and we'll talk a little bit about that next
- 28:37week as we bring you the final existing episode of the Casebook of Gregory Hood.
