- 0:00[Music] welcome to multiple
- 0:07nerdgasm Welcome to our pxs unplugged episode it's a little bit late and we
- 0:13apologize for that and also I apologize for Jenna's absence she's not well and
- 0:18not able to join us unfortunately however I'm here and James is here and
- 0:23we uh we need to talk about packs unplugged yes yes we have lots to talk
- 0:27about with packs unplugged and for some reason every packs unplugged we have a horrible
- 0:34demo yeah I wasn't feeling this particular thing this year no no and it
- 0:38was it looked so cool so um like I've got the I'm not even going to tell you
- 0:43the name of the game yet but we got it pulled up on the website it's 2017
- 0:46nominee for the best two-player board game 2017 nominee for the most innovated
- 0:50board game golden geek nominee International Gamers award finalist 2017
- 0:56nominee for the best game from a small publisher 2017 Nomine for best
- 1:00two-player game like the thing's nailing it and it was
- 1:06horrible maybe it's us I don't it must be us it can't be us we didn't we didn't
- 1:12demo together we demoed separately oh yeah I know that's true yeah that is
- 1:16true well the game we're talking about is the game that everyone was raving
- 1:19about at packs unplugged uh and it is called fog of love and it is a a dating
- 1:26game where you it's two player uh and you're on a date and you flip cards and
- 1:32you kind of try and I guess form a good
- 1:35match between yourselves or do you or do you like try and meet your personal
- 1:41goals I guess I wasn't really clear on whether it's Cooperative or not I was
- 1:45just going to be asking you that because like I I I'm not really sure man I don't
- 1:51see this is I think maybe just does yeah this so we played for maybe 20 minutes
- 1:56right I think was about Fair yes um literally had no idea what I was doing
- 2:02the entire time they were running the demo at one point I pick up the stack of
- 2:06cards um and I was like oh what are these for and the woman running the demo
- 2:10goes oh that's how you win the game it's like well you haven't talked about them
- 2:14at all and then she says well it's too complicated so we're not going to show
- 2:17you in the demo yes okay that was this basically mirrors my experience yes yeah
- 2:23so like the part of the game that helps you understand how to play the game
- 2:27we're not going to show you I wonder the mistake we made was we went on like
- 2:32the last day and so I guess we just they just they were just done with it oh yeah
- 2:39all right that makes sense you think they were just tired of explaining it
- 2:41over and over again we're like maybe maybe I don't although you know thing that
- 2:47happens but yes so fog of love everyone everyone really liked it I I know I just
- 2:54I didn't do it for me at all I actually more accurately I don't think I
- 2:59understood it at all well I'm with you I don't think I
- 3:02understood it um and I'm going to be I'm going to be honest I think personally
- 3:05I'm just moving away from two-player games in general sure yeah um you know
- 3:10when I get a chance to sit down and play games I want to do it with a group of
- 3:13friends and hang out and have fun and like this this would be a game I sit
- 3:17down and play with my wife but I'm not going to simulate a date with my wife
- 3:22sure well that's what I did that is yeah that is what you did
- 3:27and as usual we had no idea what was going on so just like real life exactly but yeah
- 3:34so that was that was a terrible demo um but we also had I think we had some
- 3:37amazing demos um you walked out with with a game from the con right what you
- 3:42got um uh I got a couple I got two actually I got uh the thing infection at Outpost
- 3:4831 I almost said 13 but it's not it's 31 which is a game based on the film The
- 3:54Thing by John Carpenter and it's pretty [ __ ] awesome it is it is it was
- 4:01really good I think there's probably the only thing I think that would have made
- 4:04it better is if they had um like actual pictures of the cast
- 4:10members yes so we played uh Luke gave us the demo he's he works at uh I think
- 4:17Mondo games or uh or maybe even I think Mondo games might just be the publisher
- 4:23but he was he worked on the game and they had a very strange experience
- 4:28demoing the game where a player was very disappointed to learn that there were no
- 4:34pictures or photographs I should say of of uh Kurt Russell in the game at all
- 4:40and then left them a negative review on board game geek on the grounds that
- 4:45there were no pictures of Kurt Russell did not play the game did not demo the
- 4:49game actually got up and walked away from the table when there were no actual
- 4:52photos of Kurt Russell and then felt the privilege that he needed to write a bad
- 4:56review like as a bit that's pretty funny did do that to someone but then to go
- 5:00and leave a negative review that is very weird and the game was so good yeah it's
- 5:06fun so the the premise of the game is that you're you're part of the team at
- 5:10the at the Arctic station if you haven't seen the film uh you probably should be
- 5:15familiar with the film going in although I guess you don't really need to well no
- 5:19that's you don't need to right cuz Jimmy was playing with us he had never seen
- 5:22the film oh Fair okay the other couple that was playing with us the the girl
- 5:25had never seen the film and they both had a great time they really enjoyed it
- 5:29okay all right well the premise is that you're all at the Arctic station an an
- 5:34Arctic station Outpost 31 uh you discovered a crashed alien spaceship and
- 5:40the alien has has replaced one of you and you are one of you is is the alien
- 5:46but looks like the human that was replaced and no one else knows who the
- 5:51alien is and and through the game play and the uh scenarios you try to figure
- 5:56out who the the thing is and deal with them and it's it kind of reminded me of
- 6:03uh the resistance but on a much bigger scale yeah like it's the it's the
- 6:09resistance if there was a whole board with rooms and the rooms malfunctioned
- 6:12and then you had to fix the rooms and then you yeah it's it's it's pretty fun
- 6:18no no that's that's a really good way to describe it cuz kind of that that core
- 6:21figuring out who the thing is is resistance style select people to go on
- 6:25a mission does a mission pass or fail but then it's a a strategy of what
- 6:29missions do go on um and how are you setting that up and then what I really
- 6:34liked about it cuz I love the movie um and I was really nervous that they
- 6:37weren't going to catch the feel of the movie but you you've got it the whole
- 6:41time you've kind of got this nervousness of trying to figure out who is the thing
- 6:44who is the alien and at the very end if you haven't figured out who the alien is
- 6:49and killed him there's a chance for them to win by escaping if they're on the helicopter
- 6:55that leaves the Ice Station that the world's anver like it's done
- 7:00so it was really cool yeah it's fun yeah so I I did purchase it in the end
- 7:04because uh I I I just really wanted to play more I I had a feeling that I was
- 7:10going to like it um but I wanted to play it first yeah you know I it's one of the
- 7:14things I like about unplugged is that like you can just demo them beforehand
- 7:20like sometimes I see a game I'm like oh that looks really cool and then I get it
- 7:23and it's not so to to be able to try them out and with the designers is
- 7:29[ __ ] awesome awesome no it's it's so cool and then it's not just games like P
- 7:34unplugged is not just about games that came out now right um Jenna got to play
- 7:39the game she's wanted to play since she was what like 5 years old yes and we
- 7:44finally made it happen um they've got a a epic game rental area there uh they
- 7:49they had hundreds of games this year that you can go and check out uh that
- 7:53was probably one of the more exciting Parts but we pulled out 13 dead end
- 7:56Drive MH which is I think Milton Bradley made that back in the'80s yeah and
- 8:03there's a reboot of it out there now like they they redid the game but we
- 8:07were playing the original um yes someone managed to not break all the pieces yeah
- 8:12they were all there and the game was awesome it was actually a really fun
- 8:16game yeah yeah it's uh it's simple but fun and it's got kind of like mous trap
- 8:23it's got interactive pieces so the premise is that you're all a bunch of
- 8:28potential a to a fortune in a mansion
- 8:32and you control you each control a number of the the characters but you
- 8:36don't really know who who's controlling who and then you want to try and kill
- 8:40people off so that the money ends up shuffling down the line to you and then
- 8:45Escape that's I mean that's the gist of it really but it's got kind of uh you
- 8:51build the house out of cardboard pieces and plastic pieces and then you actually
- 8:55set off the traps which is which is fun yeah it's like a mouse trap Happ as I
- 9:00mean it's not yeah it's not to the same level as mous trap which you by the time
- 9:03you finish setting up that game you just want to make the Trap work and then put
- 9:06it away but it's it's got that thing where like you know you're putting all
- 9:10the pieces together you're going to watch your school GS and gadgets
- 9:12interact and it's fun just killing people I guess absolutely yeah always
- 9:18yeah no I enjoyed it I uh I never I actually never heard of it uh I guess
- 9:23maybe we didn't have that in Australia but uh that was a fun game and then yeah
- 9:27it's got got re-released so there you go yeah oh I would definitely play that
- 9:31again yeah it was really good and yeah I guess cuz I remember it as a kid as well
- 9:35I don't ever remember playing it I think for us it was the same thing as as
- 9:39chenna had like our family was never going to get it cuz there there were too
- 9:42many pieces they like they knew we would break it we would lose it we'd play it
- 9:46once and it'd be you'd never be able to play it again y someone's going to
- 9:49swallow a piece of it and then it won't be playable yeah so now that we're um
- 9:54adult children now it's definitely something we can
- 9:57get yeah it's funny how that works yeah it really
- 10:01is so I I bought another game there uh
- 10:05escaton by archon games uh which uh was
- 10:09kickstarted a while back uh and it's a cult simulator of
- 10:16sorts is that how you would describe it uh you're probably good at you're
- 10:19probably better at describing the kind of game that it is than I am okay let me
- 10:23try so it's got like it's got like a bit bit of a risk aspect to it it's got a
- 10:29bit of okay so take Dominion cross that with um a bit of risk just in in the
- 10:34sense that you're trying to control land and the land your control is going to
- 10:37help give you points right mhm so I kind of looking at that but um The Cult
- 10:41aspect it comes from more of the the Dominion you know deck builder aspect
- 10:45where you're building a deck of of cultist to try and help push your your
- 10:50Darkness onto the world so I do it all the time yeah yeah again like normal
- 10:55life like that dating game it's like what we do every day just as pack
- 11:00unplugs just mirrors normal life yeah um but yeah escaton was really cool that
- 11:05was a really interesting game um it was fun to play just straight up it was just
- 11:09the theme was really cool the the cards were fantastic I was yeah I was really
- 11:13attracted by the out style it looks kind of like Mike mola's Hellboy kind of
- 11:17stuff yeah uh and obviously that attracted my eye and then I they I
- 11:23learned that it was about attempting to summon you know some old God and running
- 11:28a cult and I was like well I want to play this game now super fun yeah and
- 11:32the repay there's going to be a lot of replayability in that as well um again
- 11:36it's kind of think of dominion uh for those of you who don't do Dominion I
- 11:40don't know think of something else like Dominion that's not going to help you at
- 11:43all um but because you get to choose what's that Marvel game oh yeah um the
- 11:48one I own uh legendary yes yeah well it's I say Marvel it's they've got one
- 11:53for all of them now they they yeah like pop finals they making them don't they
- 11:58yeah cuz they've got the the same version of that for uh Alien vers
- 12:01Predator they got it for Firefly they've got it for Buffy the Vampire Hunter y
- 12:05not the movie the show yes sorry I have to clarify that I'm a fan of the movie
- 12:10Jenna is a fan of the show well I'm a fan of both you just a fan of Luke Perry
- 12:14I guess I think yeah but maybe I mean I don't know if I like peew Herman I bet I
- 12:20love PeeWee Herman yeah see that's what it is how can you and well the movie's
- 12:24got RKA so how can you go wrong that's what I'm saying the movie is so anyway
- 12:29sorry okay um but because because it's got the the cultist that you're
- 12:33purchasing essentially right you're going to switch up which ones are down
- 12:36on the playing board so every time you play you can kind of change what that
- 12:40looks like um and allows you to really adjust your strategy on the Fly and have
- 12:43that replayability in there so really fun game really cool game um definitely
- 12:48some PVP action in there it gives you a chance to dirt you know dick over your
- 12:51friends uh which is always important definitely in bold yeah good game it's
- 12:55got an expansion too which um we didn't grabb because we have a habit of
- 12:58grabbing expansion but we have so many [ __ ] games now that we don't need the
- 13:03expansions if we have a we out a game then then we'll we'll start doing that
- 13:07but yeah we you know what the cons they always have purchased the game with the
- 13:11expansion at at a discount and I always
- 13:14do it and then think oh man like we we have so many games we never get to the
- 13:21expansions I should well I mean between the two of our houses man we have we've
- 13:25been having a game night once a week every week for how how many years now
- 13:30it's uh well it'd be since we since we moved from Australia so two and a bit
- 13:36yeah two and like literally every single week for just over two years and we
- 13:40still have not gone through half the games we own yes right we have infinite
- 13:45games at this point and we keep buying more exactly exactly and you bought a
- 13:51game unplugged I did actually which I'm super psyched about um yes this is from
- 13:57our boys at smirk and Dagger um mhm those guys are great um and we got to
- 14:02play again with Drew yes Drew we met last year a Pex unplugged he showed his
- 14:06uh Cutthroat Kevin last year yes that was a lot of fun but um yeah so we want
- 14:10to play this game um it looked like it was essentially cthulu mixed with
- 14:14kerplunk uh it's called Tower of Madness and it it has a tower with tentacles
- 14:19coming out of it like like a big tower with tentacles you can't get wrong and a
- 14:22whole bunch of marbles and you pull the tentacles and the marbles drop I mean it
- 14:25is literally cthulu mixed with klun but they never say cthulu
- 14:29so they might not have purchased the rights to that I think cthul is open
- 14:35open source that's the word uh public domain yeah I thought cthulu was public
- 14:40domain but yeah I'm pretty sure then why didn't they put cthulu well because it's
- 14:44cthulu everything I guess it's maybe it's a bit on the nose at this point to
- 14:49say oh it's cthulu game like there's a million of them I don't know I don't
- 14:53know what whatever it works it was awesome um oh hell yeah so really fun
- 14:57game if you think of if if you've ever played the game Elder Sign um it's
- 15:02similar to that mixed with kplan which basically is talking it's a a dice push
- 15:05your luck game right so you're trying to match dice in order to accomplish a task
- 15:09and if you don't accomplish a task pull the tentacle from the tower some marbles
- 15:13could drop that can make you go mad it could be good for you right like it
- 15:17could be good or bad in fact if it's really bad it's going to end up being
- 15:21good so it's just it was just a fun game it was actually pretty quick too yeah
- 15:28and it's got some uh you you get like ability cards so you can kind of screw
- 15:32people over uh on their turn and and it's yeah it's it's fast and good and
- 15:37it's it's a good uh high energy almost like like a non-gamer game like you
- 15:43could get someone who's not like super into board games to play it I think well
- 15:47that's exactly why I bought it so I'm always trying to get my wife to play
- 15:51games with me and she hates games um but when I came home and I was likees yeah
- 15:56that's what I said I was like honey you like klunk you like cthulu look they're
- 16:01together and she said yes I'm in so really excited about that um and I
- 16:06definitely want to thank Drew cuz they they actually pulled one um they weren't
- 16:10running demos at the time when we showed up and he took the time and and brought
- 16:13it out so that we could demo and the one thing I got to say is while we were demo
- 16:17it there were a lot of people stopping by checking out because the game really
- 16:20is gorgeous they did a great job designing it the look The feel so they
- 16:24did a fantastic job all around like you for for those who I mean Google it you
- 16:30literally build a tower and it's got tentacles coming out of it like it's
- 16:33very eye-catching and then um while we were hanging out with them we also went
- 16:37over and we played this weird ass Gingerbread Man game it's called it's
- 16:42got this [ __ ] awesome name roll for
- 16:44your life candy man it's uh it's like a
- 16:49how do I describe it it's like a frantic it almost reminded me like the
- 16:52franticness of uh of Hungry Hungry Hippos where you're trying to you have
- 16:56to roll dice to see if you can steal the pots of the other gingerbread men like
- 17:00it's a four player I think maximum of four we played with the four of us and
- 17:05drewan and and Aaron showed us how to play and [ __ ] it that was fun that
- 17:11was really fun it was but I think like that hunger Hunger hippos that
- 17:14franticness is definitely there it's you're rolling dice you're trying to
- 17:17match and then you're stealing body parts from other players so it it was
- 17:22it's just fun it's I I would put that down as like a definite game in between
- 17:26games like you need a break from thinking throw this thing on the table
- 17:31Yeah and steal each other's body parts so yeah big thanks to uh smok and Dagger
- 17:35we really appreciate you taking the time to shows the games Drew and Aaron um
- 17:39yeah we had a really fun time thank you yeah that was awesome guys thank you so
- 17:42much um those were some of the fun chill games now uh we did play one game that
- 17:46you had to think really hard at which I think is why I've lost it every single
- 17:50round I played MH uh Tac from from cheap ass games yeah I was really uh I I got
- 17:57they sent out an email before the show show saying you know oh we're going to
- 18:00have Tac there and I was really interested because I've read um Patrick
- 18:04Roth's books have you have you read his books I've only read one book of his
- 18:10which makes me feel bad um but it's the adventurers of The Princess and Mr
- 18:13whiffles and which bad book right no it's probably one of the best books I've
- 18:18actually started teaching that in school um oh nice so what like legit yeah like
- 18:24a week ago I got a senior history ethnic studies class I read that book to my
- 18:28senior years we had rug time they all sat down it was awesome rug time nice
- 18:32well Tac is from his uh King killer Chronicles I think it's in the second
- 18:38one it comes up it's like uh they kind of describe it in the book and so I was
- 18:43interested to to actually see what they came up with for actually playing it
- 18:48it's more of a Checkers chess style uh how would you describe it like it looks
- 18:54like a classic game like it's got very simple pieces and a simple board
- 18:59but it's very I think it's got It's got a lot of depth poent like potentially
- 19:03once you once you learn how to play it I like that play on words it's got depth
- 19:08cuz it's three-dimensional I absolutely meant to
- 19:13uh to go there if you don't know what the game looks like that doesn't help
- 19:17you at all um so yeah it it does it's got that very classic look like a chess
- 19:22like a Checkers um you know it's just two different colored pieces wooden
- 19:25pieces but you can actually stack them on top of each each other mhm think who
- 19:30what would he it's almost like if you took Connect 4 right and you laid it
- 19:35down but then you could stack on top and then you can move those Stacks
- 19:40absolutely and and you can put a block on top that like stops them from
- 19:44stacking and you can steal other people's pieces in a way yeah so so like
- 19:49take Connect Four but change all of it and you've got tack it's not a good I
- 19:55always feel like it's not I you know when it obviously is the easiest way to
- 19:59describe games is to say oh it's kind of like this mixes with this but then I
- 20:03always feel bad like like um you know like oh you know it's just this and this
- 20:08mixed together like that like you know I feel bad so do I like it's so much more
- 20:13than that like dude T is not Connect 4 Connect 4 is like oh absolutely like all
- 20:18these games like it's just it's just how to find a frame of reference to describe
- 20:22it to people when when we're [ __ ] talking about it on in an audio medium
- 20:26it's like yeah it's tough [ __ ] like really guys if you think of rocks papers
- 20:30and scissors it's like that but with cards and a board and dice and what was
- 20:36the very first game I don't know I've always actually wondered that um they
- 20:41just they just recently found a board game design in a in a cave somewhere
- 20:46which I forget yeah I keep trying to remember to read the article and then I
- 20:50do stuff and I don't read the article right I don't know I've also got this
- 20:55great book from uh dice tower on uh like Psych ology gaming and stuff which I I
- 21:00want to get through and read but I mean cu the truth is like when you look at
- 21:04the the honest mechanics of games there's only so many actual different
- 21:08mechanics out there sure and so a lot of the games are just how are you combining
- 21:13those different mechanics and how are you theming those mechanics mhm yes so
- 21:18and that's the only way you can do it really like there's so few that are
- 21:22something new and unique yeah yeah Tac for example right the mechanic and
- 21:29attack is get four in a row right well I mean not even necessarily four in a row
- 21:33but get make a path from one side to the other yeah because the board I think you
- 21:37can choose different board sizes as you as you get better at it so so if you're
- 21:42you know you're making a path from from A to B and a straight A solid path you
- 21:47know where zigs whatever but it's it's very similar to make four in a row make
- 21:51a line make things connection but then it's you know how do they tweak that and
- 21:55and what do they do to make that different and Haack it a really good job
- 21:59of of bringing that and putting it into three dimensions and allowing you to really
- 22:06play with strategy and make you think hard and I lost every single
- 22:12game yeah I don't think I won a single game either you might you didn't yeah I
- 22:19don't think you won a game but in the time it took you and Jenna to play one
- 22:23game I had lost four okay fair enough so you know I'm
- 22:29just maybe it it's a little above my level I was I was worried that uh
- 22:35because it it had in the book it's described it's the game that kind of
- 22:39everybody plays in in it's like the chess of of the world in the book as I
- 22:44recall someone's probably going to write in and correct me and say that no it's
- 22:47actually only two people play it but but from memory quite a lot of people play
- 22:52attack in in in the wise in wise man's fear I think it's wise man's fear that
- 22:56it's in the second book and uh so it was kind of like oh I hope it's
- 23:01not [ __ ] because that'll ruin it you know like you know when they trying oh
- 23:05we made the game that they play in that fantasy thing and then it's like oh this
- 23:09game's [ __ ] yeah you get all excited to play this game that exists in this world
- 23:13and it's it's Connect 4 yes but but it's not it's it's actually it's it's very
- 23:18good and it seem I think it it has a lot of depth potentially and uh I think they
- 23:23did a really good job of capturing you know it's strategic and it's but it's
- 23:28also simple and it feels like it would belong in kind of a fantasy lord of the
- 23:33ring style setting because it's not elaborate or you know it's it's not 13
- 23:38dead end Drive yeah yeah exactly and I mean it's it's got that classic feel
- 23:43like go chess Malala you know like they're so simple but the strategy is so
- 23:49deep and the only thing it's got It's the the box says and I guess this is the
- 23:54tagline for it it's Tac a beautiful game and that is just so Patrick rothus to me
- 24:01but like it's a little bit pretentious like just a touch of pretentiousness in
- 24:07there yeah but he pulls it off also but also yeah exactly also you be Patrick
- 24:11rothus and you're like no he he's earned it
- 24:16like he's got the the the he he can back that up
- 24:21so yeah if you watch him play D and D you're like oh he he can talk the talk
- 24:26fine you can call fine we'll call it a beautiful game fine
- 24:29well I mean he can he can talk the talk cuz he talks his way into it every
- 24:33single time one other game that we played that I wasn't super
- 24:38into uh was you've got crabs by uh I guess I guess is the company exploding
- 24:45kittens now it's it's the guy who does the oatmeal uh I guess he does the art
- 24:49for these I don't know what the actual company is yeah it's yeah whoever did
- 24:53exploding kids is it exp I'm goingon to look that up right now yeah I don't know
- 24:57what the company name is because I don't I don't know that they intended it to be
- 25:00a company at the time when they made exploding kittens it was just we're
- 25:03making a board game or card game rather yeah and they I mean they've made quite
- 25:07a few now they've got uh exploding kittens they've got Bears vers kittens
- 25:10and then they Bears vers babies Bears vers babies yeah so you've got crabs
- 25:15it's kind of like Snap but way more complicated because you've got to
- 25:20collect four of a thing and then you play on two you play on teams and then
- 25:23you've got to come up with a secret way of indicating to your partner that you
- 25:27have for and then they have to call it and the other team can call it as well
- 25:31am I describing that in any way that is understandable I think that was a
- 25:36perfectly accurate way to describe it I don't know if the listeners are going to
- 25:38get it but I got it maybe yeah watch your video maybe and I think it's fine
- 25:43it's just not for me yeah um I don't think it's bad it's
- 25:48just I was like yeah okay I'm I'm GNA go out on a Lim and say it was bad okay
- 25:54I'll I'll take that hard the hate mail if there is any for this um I guess I
- 26:00just expected more like exploding kittens to me was really fun game um
- 26:04that it had exploding kittens had like this kind of intenseness to it where
- 26:09like it was Goofy it was silly but you were just waiting to pull that explosion
- 26:13yeah um I think exploding kittens is a fun game yeah but so I was expecting
- 26:18that same type of thing and you got crabs was just kind of
- 26:21silly yeah oh and the expansion pack where you have to put the claws the
- 26:26lobster gloves on is that is just dumb like it that I mean it's funny
- 26:33Once like it's not even fun the whole time um
- 26:39yeah so I you know that we with the deck we were playing with had that aspect to
- 26:44it which is like you grab the wild card and if you have a wild card then you
- 26:47have to wear these crab cloths that the game comes with and when you're wearing
- 26:50the crab cloths you literally can't play the game yeah because you can't hold
- 26:54things yeah which is the whole point of the game like it's funny and goofy but I
- 26:59don't know like I said it's just not for me yeah it Ser I'm a serious gamer I
- 27:05don't care about the interest understand in a [Laughter]
- 27:10[ __ ] H their Booth though was [ __ ] awesome their Booth uh if you wanted to
- 27:15buy something from them they had like the booth was done up like it looked
- 27:19like the box for Bears versus babies where it was all furry and there was
- 27:24like a a window and it was done up like a vending machine except it was just a
- 27:28window and there were humans in there like doing things but they made you push
- 27:33the buttons anyway and then they would hold up signs that said what they were
- 27:37doing like please wait you know like uh uh dispensing and then they would just
- 27:42throw the stuff at the bottom like you have to hand them the cash through a
- 27:45little slot and then they would throw it at the bottom like a vending machine
- 27:48that was freaking hilarious I didn't even see that oh really yeah someone
- 27:53must have put a video of this up at YouTube so check out yeah look up the
- 27:57the the I guess the exploding kittens booth that PX unplugged 2018 yeah it was
- 28:02like a like I said a fake vending machine with just someone in there
- 28:06pretending that it was a machine it was pretty funny kind of wish I had seen
- 28:10that and you could pay I think you could pay to get like a random item I don't
- 28:17I'm not quite sure quite sure how it worked whether you had to pay for it or
- 28:19you just got a Bonus like random item and like a woman got a broom and like
- 28:25they would just just some random crap they would dispense it was it was pretty
- 28:30funny like they got a crowd going so those guys know how to do it they really
- 28:34do oh yeah speaking of people who know how to do it I think I know where you're
- 28:38going with this one I'm talking about our friends at Atlas games
- 28:44yep we uh we love hanging out with the guys from Atlas they're [ __ ] awesome
- 28:50and we got to try out we to try out two of the two games actually with at Atlas
- 28:54games and uh and as always I go was to
- 28:58beat Alex from Atlas games we didn't no we didn't this time we got no we didn't
- 29:04we it was and that that that [ __ ] sucks yeah um but it's okay Alex I know
- 29:09eventually you're going to listen to this I just want you to know I'm putting
- 29:12this out here right now uh on the ride home from PS I designed four different
- 29:17games all about making you lose um within a week win these games Alex you
- 29:22cannot win them you cannot win these games within a week and a half of being
- 29:25home I have one printed and ready to
- 29:28roll [ __ ] off really yeah legit huh we
- 29:33we were going to Jimmy had it with him on uh on Tuesday but I wasn't able s son
- 29:38of a [ __ ] he didn't even say anything he didn't say anything no oh my God you
- 29:43guys could have played Alex can't win that's the name of that game that was
- 29:46printed Alex just i' known see if I'd known to ask him there's no way Jimmy
- 29:50would lie no he wouldn't Li but I didn't know to ask fck I'll have to tell you
- 29:53next time so listen Alex when I find tun in this game I'm sending it to you the
- 29:57name of the game is Alex can't
- 30:01win we will we will share the game uh when when it is when it is appropriate
- 30:07but we played yeah let's talk about the they showed us yes so uh cogs and
- 30:12commissars uh I guess world domination
- 30:17game of a of sorts you you you're
- 30:20playing as a it's communist robots I guess is the best way to describe them
- 30:26yeah like 1950s communist robots right
- 30:29and your job is to kind of gain the most followers so that you can uh you can
- 30:35take over the world and every everybody has a different robot uh with with
- 30:41particular skills and you can use that to attract more followers or followers
- 30:46is followers the right word what do you call them in that scenario I don't know
- 30:49a whole lot about communism um you could you could call them followers that would
- 30:55work I mean for this game that that's what works right um cuz it was the the what were the
- 31:01names they had I can't you have the actual game but I think it was like the
- 31:04bis um yes the uh
- 31:09proletariat yes right or peasant I don't remember which uh and then a missing one
- 31:14commas commas oh yeah of course right the yeah the hint was in the name the
- 31:18whole time yeah it was it's right in the main name um yeah it's it's actually
- 31:23it's a it's a really fun game um yes every robot
- 31:28has uh a slightly different power to it um and then every deck of cards is is
- 31:35tweaked so it was actually really cool is um what Travis was telling us Alex
- 31:39wasn't telling us this Travis was telling us this um sorry it's just my
- 31:42goal in life to throw Alex under the bus as often as possible um that's fair
- 31:47Travis was telling us that like once you start playing the game once you're good
- 31:49at it you actually take the base decks the game comes with and you can start
- 31:53switching it up you can create your own decks um you can do just kind of like a
- 31:57buying type aspect so you can really take the game and get a lot more
- 32:01replayability out of it by trying to change up how each individual robot is going to
- 32:07play yeah it's like I had a lot of fun with it it's uh it's one of those games
- 32:13way you you really have to screw over your opponents and I always feel awkward
- 32:17doing that at conventions when I'm playing with strangers because I'm
- 32:21socially awkward and I feel like by being a dick to people that I don't know
- 32:27I'm not making any friends so I uh I have trouble with that but I feel like
- 32:31amongst friends I think this would be a lot of fun no no it definitely yeah it's
- 32:34definitely a blast um and that like the the theming of the game is so cool you
- 32:38know like one of the cards is artificial stal intelligence you know they they did an
- 32:44awesome job with this game yeah yeah yeah the Art's beautiful and if you get
- 32:49the uh the the deluxe edition you get uh The Tokens The the small tokens are
- 32:55worth three one am I talking smallest one going that out the smallest ones are
- 33:01worth one the middle ones are worth three and the big ones are worth five
- 33:04and the the middle one is three times the size of the small one so you can
- 33:08kind of stack them and like it it makes it easier to keep track of how many you
- 33:13have kind of thing yeah no it definitely does it also helps it makes it easier to
- 33:17keep track of how many your opponent has yes when you start important factor they
- 33:23can't hide those commissars from you they do they do that's what propaganda
- 33:27is all about mhm oh yeah and you can play as uh such inspirational leaders as
- 33:32artificial style intelligence simul Lenin or goov brilliant they they really
- 33:39did a good job man that was such a good game um and then we played another one
- 33:44with them that's I don't even know if it's out yet no it's not it's not and
- 33:49and you know what I don't remember what the [ __ ] name was I was hoping you
- 33:53did no it was it was God's God related yeah
- 33:58the Adas games gods and something something in Gods um mhm Alex is going
- 34:04to [ __ ] nail us for this yeah he really is [ __ ] we you know what I got to
- 34:08look this up um oh I tried I tried the problem is it's not out yet so
- 34:14oh really yeah God damn it did they like put it on their blog maybe I mean look
- 34:20I'll be honest I didn't look that hard but I didn't find it when I looked for
- 34:24it um no there's just some Gloom there's some commas no this is a game that they
- 34:30just picked up so it's uh it's not available yet it's kind of there I think
- 34:37the game is finalized uh so you can play it but they
- 34:41have it's not in production at all well you know I think it's their fault we
- 34:45don't know the name of it it's not it's definitely not it's
- 34:49it's 100% our fault it's not our fault we don't write anything down cuz if Alex
- 34:54had told us to write the name down cuz he didn't put the information up on the
- 34:57website we would have known you know what the the thing is I bet Jenna knows
- 35:01what it is and she's not here to to help
- 35:06us God damn it she really does too all right well let's talk about the game
- 35:11yeah uh you you are I guess a magic user and your goal is to you can only attack
- 35:17the person to your left and your goal is
- 35:21to I guess survive until the end and each round you you draw cards and you
- 35:26play cards to gain power uh and play
- 35:31attacks and kind of wear down your opponent's defenses um but also you have
- 35:37to build up defense because the person to your right is going to [ __ ] with you
- 35:40so I was not very good at it was I yeah no both of us atrocious yeah you know
- 35:46who was good at it Alex don't we should probably cut that bit
- 35:51out I don't want to he's going to hear this all right they were they were
- 35:55giving him credit yeah exactly all right you're right right let's rephrase that
- 35:59um you know who was good at that was Jenna yeah and Travis yeah and Travis I
- 36:05mean Travis is very good at it I bet Travis is probably the best at that I
- 36:08bet he's better than I like I can't think of anyone else who was good at it
- 36:10not a single soul no just uh Jenna and Travis umh and Jimmy Jimmy Jimmy was
- 36:17pretty good and I mean you and I weren't the worst at it but uh anyway we weren't
- 36:23good at it but we weren't the wor there was definitely at least one other person
- 36:25playing that was worse than us some some Unforgettable I don't really remember
- 36:30anyway moving on but yeah know big thanks to Atlas games we love we love
- 36:34hanging out you guys and uh you make some [ __ ] awesome games so yeah you
- 36:39guys really do you make KCK ass games um can't wait to see you at the next con
- 36:42when we get together and hang out again if you haven't played Gloom [ __ ]
- 36:46check it out it's one of my favorite games if you like storytelling they
- 36:49probably Gloom I mean not problem with Gloom the problem with people is they
- 36:53don't like Gloom sometimes how can you not like Gloom well I think some people
- 36:58don't like improvising and it's kind of like a it kind of is like an improv game
- 37:04in a way with with with prompts the way that I like to play it anyway maybe it's
- 37:09just people don't like playing it with me no I'm like no you [ __ ] tell a
- 37:13story I play it the same way you like the you have to tell a story if you're
- 37:16not telling a story you can't play the card [ __ ] you yeah exactly yeah yeah
- 37:21there was a big change at Pax unplugged this year and I was really
- 37:26worried about it because I really really really like
- 37:30Chris Perkins as a dungeon master but he's retired from Acquisitions
- 37:37Incorporated and he's been he's been replaced by I mean not that not in a bad
- 37:43this is bad he's been replaced by Jeremy Crawford who's the lead uh rules
- 37:48designer at Wizards of the Coast for Dungeons and Dragons so you know someone
- 37:52qualified but still I I had never seen Jeremy Crawford run a game like that
- 37:57before and I was worried but Jeremy Crawford's [ __ ] awesome he killed it
- 38:03he really did yes and not to you know I I will always love Chris Perkins and
- 38:09Chris Perkins is still one of my favorite dungon Masters he does a
- 38:14[ __ ] amazing job but Jeremy Crawford he [ __ ] nailed it he was funny he was
- 38:20uh he was on the ball he didn't let he didn't let him because there's a danger
- 38:24that Patrick rothus is going to is going to he's gonna R the whole thing up he's gon
- 38:29to rth fist the whole thing he I feel like he kept him in control pretty well
- 38:33that was good well what I loved is um the one time when rothus really tried
- 38:37right he like really pushed if you ever seen him play he does a thing where he's
- 38:41like oh I'm going to do this thing and I deserve Advantage because and then
- 38:45insert like a five minute spiel about why he deserves Advantage right um
- 38:50Jeremy listened to him and then went with him right saying said yes
- 38:55to the player which is awesome but did it directly in line with the rules of
- 38:59the game and made it truly work based on the rules which was killer so I thought
- 39:04that was really cool it wasn't just I'm going to say yes CU I'm the GM and it
- 39:08makes the story better but I'm going to say yes because story better also it
- 39:11matches up with the rules that I may or may not be in charge of yes yeah so I
- 39:17like really enjoyed uh because because I love Acquisitions Incorporated it's one
- 39:20of my favorite pots of packs to be honest even even PX East uh which is
- 39:25video game Centric one of my favorite parts of that is Acquisitions
- 39:28Incorporated I've just I've been watching him since P's Prime in
- 39:35201 I think so when they played with will weaton uh and that was my first
- 39:42exposure to Chris Perkins and uh he will be missed but uh yeah Jeremy Crawford
- 39:47did a [ __ ] great job really enjoyed it some funny stuff happened too that
- 39:52was a great game that was a really good game that was a brand new setting brand new world
- 39:57yes that was that was fantastic yes he does some good voices
- 40:02and he does he does he's yeah mannerisms and voices and stuff like I I'm into
- 40:07that stuff I think it's it it adds to it and he did a really good job we we
- 40:11always make an effort to go to the penny arcade panels just because I've been a
- 40:15fan of Penny Arcade for so long I know you guys have as well you know even
- 40:18before PS I was I was a fan so we always
- 40:21go to the uh the q&as and the um uh the make a strip
- 40:28uh this year for the maker strip for the first time they they did it's a trial
- 40:34thing where if you donated money to Charles play they would incorporate
- 40:38certain things into the strip like as we were going and I feel like I I don't
- 40:42know if they made that up on the fly it see like they must have had it prepared
- 40:45because there was a graphic made for the you know for the amount and everything
- 40:49but I guess the point of this was that if you wanted the hot dog fairy to
- 40:53appear you had they wanted to make some lowall at first wasn't it like 500 bucks
- 40:58or something I don't I don't remember I don't think it was 500 was it that low
- 41:03yeah I think it was that low it was like 500 bucks um just to get the hot dog
- 41:07Fair which if you know the hot dog fair is something they traditionally draw in
- 41:11into the panel when they're at cons um but see I don't see how they could not
- 41:15put it in there so they like I mean I what if we had they had made 500 bucks
- 41:18we going to leave the hot dog fairy out of a [ __ ] packs pant I I think they
- 41:22would have left it out I really do and I'm going to be honest like I'm going to
- 41:26give them credit for it right because what they're trying to raise money for
- 41:29is a really good cause so oh yeah Charles play [ __ ] awesome but um but
- 41:34yeah so they had the super low number uh I think it was like $500 and like by the
- 41:38time they finished announcing how much money they needed to raise in order to
- 41:42get the hot dog fair and they had that money yeah which was then it was upgrade
- 41:47him to a uh Philly cheese steak Ferry for um I think it was five grand in the
- 41:53end was the uh was the goal and which they met so so good stuff I think it's a
- 41:59good way to get people involved I mean I I generally I I mean I give Child's Play
- 42:03uh anyway just because I think it's a really good course for those who don't
- 42:06know Charles play is the the charity that the guys from P started uh it
- 42:11provides um toys and games for children
- 42:16who are in hospital and uh you know it's it's a shitty place for a kid to be and
- 42:21so it kind of provides them with some entertainment and something to take
- 42:25their mind off whatever the hell it is got him in there so I think it's just a
- 42:29really good cause wait it's not to make a reboot of Child's Play The the 1988
- 42:36slasher movie with Chucky no they're already doing that Hollywood's paying
- 42:40for that oh this is man I thought that's what they were taking donations for oh
- 42:45[ __ ] oh maybe you can get a refund I guess if you didn't realize I I'll I'll
- 42:51let it go this time all right but at least I feel informed now that it's yeah
- 42:55sorry actually nonprofit should point that out I guess yeah not to reboot a
- 43:01movie that kills kids yeah it's kind of the opposite I
- 43:05guess yeah kind of the exact opposite uh the Q&A was really good this time too
- 43:09because the for if you don't know about Penny arade then I mean I don't really
- 43:14know why you're listening to this episode uh but um the the Q&A is is Mike
- 43:21and Jerry who founded Penny Arcade answering questions and at this point it's
- 43:27been like when was the first packs
- 43:31like 2009 at least cuz I'm looking over at my DVDs and I have the DVDs from pack
- 43:372009 so it's been almost 10 years
- 43:40right possibly has been 10 years or more and they've been asked everything I
- 43:47think and so the questions this time 2004 2004 according to Wikipedia so
- 43:54maybe it's still 2009 no no no I'm just I just happened to have a DVD of the PS
- 43:592009 stuff that I on my shelf that I'm looking at that's so I know it's been at
- 44:04least that but 2004 [ __ ] man it's so long so yeah they've been asked a lot of
- 44:10questions in the q&as and this time was [ __ ] awesome because the questions
- 44:14were so weird like and it was just kind of like really weird and creative stuff
- 44:21like and some of them they just refused to answer because they were just to over
- 44:24the top but it was just like like Sur realist questions like you know would
- 44:30you rather be a this is example cuz I don't remember the specifics but would
- 44:34you would you rather be a hamburger or a hot dog kind of thing like I don't know
- 44:38it just I found it really interesting really funny and interesting yeah and
- 44:42then um it looks like during the Q&A now half of it is just their staff messing
- 44:46with them oh right like the the phanom of the Opera bit I don't know did that
- 44:50go somewhere that I me I enjoyed it anyway but it went
- 44:54nowhere but I think that's what made it so good it's like yes so they had um
- 44:59they get different colored envelop based on the question that they're going to
- 45:02ask and they had a red envelope which they never had before so they they pull
- 45:05it up and like we don't really know what this is for and they open it they play
- 45:08fan of the Opera music really loud flash the lights and then he reads a question
- 45:14which is posed as if it's coming from the actual Phantom of the Opera from the
- 45:18Opera Phantom of the Opera um and this happened what three four times yep that
- 45:24we saw I mean happened at other times and uh the last time it just kind of
- 45:29fizzled the Phantom was like all right cool I guess I'm in the wrong place
- 45:32peace and it was over um but the best part was just the confusion on their
- 45:37faces cuz they had no clue this was happening this was a setup they kept
- 45:41looking over their shoulder for somebody to come running on stage dressed as the
- 45:44Phantom of the Opera yeah other than that I mean I had a nice time in Philly
- 45:49I like uh I like Philly is a city Philly gets a bad rap I feel like people often
- 45:54say you know don't get shot but I have so you that's nice not yet not yet no
- 46:01Philly does get not a great rap um but it is great it's got snap Pizza which is
- 46:07snap Pizza we talk about this last year we must have I think yeah we probably
- 46:12spent like 20 minutes talking about it last year show last year was [ __ ]
- 46:15snap Pizza you went twice this year I did go twice yeah yeah cuz once was not
- 46:20the same day if I recall yeah yeah cuz you guys uh you guys went out to dinner
- 46:25one place that was um so my a couple things going on uh my knee was
- 46:29all messed up this year at pack so I was trying to reduce walking and I had a ton
- 46:32of work to do so I was trying to get that done in the in between time um so
- 46:36the main group went off to dinner far away and I was like I'll just go around
- 46:40the corner and get a burger and I went to The Burger Joint and the line was
- 46:43like 10 people long like I don't want to wait that long so I walked half a mile
- 46:48to snap Pizza instead cuz cuz that took less time I
- 46:53guess it's so good I don't know totally worth it we did we explored uh we
