- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Hebrews 7.
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: The Priest Melchizedek Melchizedek was the king of Salem and a priest for the God most high.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: He met Abraham when Abraham was coming back after defeating the kings.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: That day Melchizedek blessed him.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: Then Abraham gave him a tenth of everything he had.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: The name Melchizedek, King of Salem has two meanings.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: First, Melchizedek means king of justice, and king of Salem means king of peace.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: No one knows who his father or mother was or where he came from.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: And no one knows when he was born or when he died.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: Melchizedek is like the son of God in that he will always be a priest.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: You can see that Melchizedek was very great.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: Abraham, our great ancestor, gave him a tenth of everything that he won in battle.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: Now the law says that those from the tribe of Levi who become priests must get a tenth from their own people, even though they and their people are both from the family of Abraham.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: Melchizedek was not even from the tribe of Levi, but Abraham gave him a tenth of what he had, and Melchizedek blessed Abraham, the one who had God's promises.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: And everyone knows that the more important person always blesses the less important person.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: Those priests get a tenth, but they are only men who live and then die.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: But Melchizedek, who got a tenth from Abram, continues to live as the scriptures say.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: Now those from the family of Levi are the ones who get a tenth from the people.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: But we can say that when Abraham paid Melchizedek a tenth, then Levi also paid it.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: Levi was not yet born, but he already existed in his ancestor Abraham, when Melchizedek meant him.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: The people were given the law under the system of the priests from the tribe of Levi, but no one could be spiritually made perfect through that system of priests.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: So there was a need for another priest to come.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: I mean a priest like Melchizedek, not Aaron.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: And when a different kind of priest comes, the law must be changed too.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: We are talking about our Lord Christ, who belonged to a different tribe.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: No one from that tribe ever served as a priest at the altar.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: It is clear that Christ came from the tribe of Judah, and Moses said nothing about priests belonging to that tribe.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: Jesus is a priest like Melchizedek, and these things become even clearer when we see that another priest has come who is like Melchizedek.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: He was made a priest, but not because he met the requirement of being born into the right family.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: He became a priest by the power of a life that will never end.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: This is what the scriptures say about him.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: You are a priest forever, the kind of priest Melchizedek was.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: The old rule is now ended because it was weak and worthless.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: The law of Moses could not make anything perfect, but now a better hope has been given to us, and with that hope we can come near to God.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: Also, it is important that God made a promise with an oath when he made Jesus high priest.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: When those other men became priests there was no oath, but Christ became a priest with God's oath.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: God said to him, The Lord has made a promise with an oath and will not change his mind.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: You are a priest forever.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: Psalm one ten verse four.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: So this means that Jesus is the guarantee of a better agreement from God to his people.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: Also, when one of those other priests died, he could not continue being a priest.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: And there were so many of those priests, but Jesus lives forever.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: He will never stop serving as a priest.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: So Christ can save those who come to God through him.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: Christ can do this forever because he always lives and is ready to help people when they come before God.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: So Jesus is the kind of high priest we need.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: He has no sin in him, he is pure and not influenced by sinners.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: And he is raised above the heavens.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: He's not like the other priests.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: They've had to offer sacrifices every day, first for their own sins and then for the sins of the people.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: But Jesus doesn't need to do that.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: He offered only one sacrifice for all time.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: He offered himself.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: The law chooses high priests who are men and have the same weaknesses that all people have.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: But after the law, God spoke the oath that made his son high priest.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: And that son, made perfect through suffering, will serve forever.
