- 0:06SPEAKER_00: In this podcast, we'll be discussing the medical accuracy and mental health themes of our favorite horror movies.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: Garnet is a mental health professional while Katia is a PA at an off-brand planned parenthood.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: Together, we'll educate the shit out of some great, not so great movies.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: This podcast is not meant for individual medical or mental health advice.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: This is for entertainment purposes only.
- 0:28SPEAKER_01: I'm Garnet and I'm a mental health professional.
- 0:31SPEAKER_01: And I'll be here to talk about the mental health and its accuracies in some of me and Kadia's favorite movies.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: Yay.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: I'm Kadia.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: My credentials are I graduated PA school in 2014.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: I have experience in a lot of different areas of medicine.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: I've worked in primary care, ENT, done some women's health, gender-affirming care, workers' comp, urgent care.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: I've had a lot of jobs.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: I've loved horror movies since my parents first showed me it in the miniseries at the tender age of four.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: I think horror is an underrated genre.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: And when it comes to its ability to tell thematic, thought-provoking stories, it's pretty unmatched, in my opinion.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: It's one of the only genres where female characters are almost default by default the heroes.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: And I just like being scared.
- 1:18SPEAKER_01: I like to play the game of seeing how many terrible things make me feel something.
- 1:23SPEAKER_01: That's part of why I watch horror movies.
- 1:25SPEAKER_01: But in general, I like the psychological aspects, the things we can learn from them.
- 1:29SPEAKER_01: I was exposed to horror real young too.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: Resident Evil when I was seven.
- 1:34SPEAKER_01: The game.
- 1:34SPEAKER_01: Movies in existence.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: I was going to say, so what are some of your favorite movies from the different eras in your life that really stuck out to you?
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: We already have sorted this out because we're kind of crazy type A people.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: But I picked three movies from different eras of my life because that was just easier for me to like nail it down.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: Cause if I just had to pick three best horror movies ever, that's just way too much for me to process.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: In childhood Kadia, Monster Squad, it's a cult classic 80s film uh about kids on bikes fighting monsters.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: Spoilers or trigger warnings since it's in 80s movies.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: There are definitely some problematic parts that I cringe about today, but the heart of the movie still resonates me.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: I'll always love a kid on bike story.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: Give me one of yours.
- 2:19SPEAKER_01: So for me, my very first favorite horror movie when I was young was Dawn of the Dead.
- 2:24SPEAKER_01: Not the original, the remake.
- 2:26SPEAKER_01: I would see the remake later on, but basically I just might the whole zombie premise raised around Resident Evil and just, you know, planning to go live in a mall and not let anyone else come in because they could be infected, type of thing.
- 2:41SPEAKER_01: So I don't know, the whole mall horror zombie thing got to me.
- 2:45SPEAKER_01: And also I feel like 1980s movies, their prerequisite is to have problematic things.
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: Or else it's not a 1980s movie.
- 2:52SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 2:54SPEAKER_01: What store would you want to live in if you were in a mall?
- 2:57SPEAKER_01: Oh boy.
- 2:58SPEAKER_01: I mean, I'd have to eat, so I guess picking a hot topic would be ridiculous and immature of me.
- 3:04SPEAKER_01: Why would I want to do that?
- 3:06SPEAKER_01: Um, maybe an Annie Ann's pretzel place if they have one.
- 3:09SPEAKER_01: That's nice.
- 3:10SPEAKER_01: Haven't had one in years.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: If we're at one of those huge malls like King of Prussia or the Syracuse Mall, I'm picking the love sack store.
- 3:17SPEAKER_01: Those are fun.
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: You can run into them and they just conform to your body.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: I had two love sacks once.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: My other, my second favorite movie I picked was from Teenage Cadia's years, and it was 13 ghosts.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: I was obsessed with the black zodiac and the different ghost archetypes.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: And I had huge crushes on Shannon Elizabeth and Matthew Lillard, but who didn't?
- 3:40SPEAKER_01: I love Matthew Lillard too.
- 3:42SPEAKER_01: I think it that stuff kind of ruins all our tastes and then or made it better, all that all no, made it better.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: Matthew Lillard and Indiv he's a remarkably great individual from everything I've seen.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: He's one of my people I would love to meet.
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: That aesthetic.
- 4:01SPEAKER_01: Oof.
- 4:01SPEAKER_01: But I still need to see 13 ghosts.
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: I still haven't seen it.
- 4:04SPEAKER_01: So what am I doing with my life?
- 4:07SPEAKER_01: There's some mental health things we could go, so we could go over it.
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, for sure.
- 4:11SPEAKER_01: If you're obsessed with it, it must be good.
- 4:13SPEAKER_01: Is what I always say.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: You'll like it in the it's so good, it's bad way.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: I feel like that's most of the stuff I like.
- 4:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, pretty much.
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: What's your next favorite?
- 4:23SPEAKER_01: So the mist.
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: I don't know if you remember in college, I used to shove the mist down everyone's throat.
- 4:28SPEAKER_01: I'm like, you all have to see the mist by Stephen King.
- 4:30SPEAKER_01: And specifically, I like it for how crazy the ending was.
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: And spoiler alert, he uh doesn't wait the extra five seconds to be rescued by the army.
- 4:41SPEAKER_01: Everyone he knows is dead because he thought he was doing them a service.
- 4:45SPEAKER_01: It's just a crazy movie.
- 4:47SPEAKER_01: The whole like concept of it, I just thought was really interesting.
- 4:50SPEAKER_01: But that was my favorite college one.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: I believe the first time I saw it was because you had us watch it.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: Yep, that sounds about right.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: My adult favorite horror movie is The Conjuring.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: It honestly just visually scares the crap out of me.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: James Wan is like a master of framing and suspense.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: Also, religious horror is pretty close to my heart.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: It was my mom's favorite genre of horror, the one that scared her the most.
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: Religion can be scary unless it's the nun, because that's a comedy.
- 5:19SPEAKER_01: At least we're much like the nun two was a comedy.
- 5:22SPEAKER_01: The nun two.
- 5:23SPEAKER_01: The first nun was just bad.
- 5:26SPEAKER_01: I'll never forget that kid, like with the all right, anyway.
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: I should just cut that out.
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: I can't even think of words that make sense, but the whole whipping around thing, whatever that was, it was just like something out of Kill Bill, but a child doing it, which made it ridiculous or more ridiculous, whatever.
- 5:43SPEAKER_01: I was gonna say, um, to wrap up favorite horror movies, I'm just gonna use in the last two years, because if I told you the ones I had this year, we'd be here all night.
- 5:53SPEAKER_01: Like everything I've seen has been great so far.
- 5:55SPEAKER_01: But talk to me is one of my favorite, more recent ones, just because of the concept, how unnerving it was, and also one of my favorite indie rap artists, sadistic, has his music on it, and I thought that was super cool to see his music featured in something like that.
- 6:11SPEAKER_01: So thought that was really neat.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: I enjoyed Talk To Me.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, there was creepy OD imagery in that, wasn't there?
- 6:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and there was creepy wet drowned person imagery too.
- 6:24SPEAKER_01: I remember that.
- 6:25SPEAKER_01: I was just like, oh I'm comfy.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: Who's your favorite vinyl girl?
- 6:29SPEAKER_01: Buffy the vampire slayer, even though it's not like a movie.
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: Well, no, there is a movie.
- 6:34SPEAKER_01: I've just it was a movie, it was a movie, yeah.
- 6:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Buffy.
- 6:39SPEAKER_01: Fair.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: Me and Vic were talking about this earlier because I know I initially told you Ripley, and I do believe that.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: I just she's so competent, and it's her competence that saves the day.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: But I kind of want to go a little more OG.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: She's not the OG OG, but Lori Strode from Halloween.
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay.
- 7:01SPEAKER_01: I was like, wait, what?
- 7:02SPEAKER_01: Wow, I didn't even realize that was her name.
- 7:04SPEAKER_01: Oops, yeah, no, that's cool.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: Jamie Lee Curtis is iconic.
- 7:09SPEAKER_01: I just know her as Jamie Lee Curtis for some reason.
- 7:11SPEAKER_01: I even like connect that it's a character.
- 7:13SPEAKER_01: I'm like, oh, it's Jamie Lee Curtis.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: That's just her in her life.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: We're just filming her.
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, basically, she's so cool.
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: No, that's awesome.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: All right, and then another fun thing about Garnet and I is we have very interesting literary taste.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: So my final question for you, Garnet, is what's the most out-of-pocket monster smut you've ever read?
- 7:38SPEAKER_01: That's hard telling because most of the reason I'm why I'm into monster smut is because of you.
- 7:44SPEAKER_01: So it's almost something you've recommended.
- 7:46SPEAKER_01: But the thing that um pops out to me the most is he loves me not.
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: It's about a snake man.
- 7:52SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 7:52SPEAKER_01: Things with snake men are just interesting to me because it's such a odd anatomy.
- 7:57SPEAKER_01: It's just a very it's something, it's like a wild ride.
- 8:00SPEAKER_01: But even if you took the snake part out of it, it's actually uh enemies to lovers type nice story, and it'd be cool if a place like that existed in the sense of like how accepting um everybody is in that town of unique things.
- 8:16SPEAKER_01: Just like stumbling over my words now, but yeah, it's uh who wrote it?
- 8:20SPEAKER_01: The milk, the one with the milking minotaurs, she's the one who wrote it.
- 8:23SPEAKER_01: Oh, milk minutes.
- 8:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, I don't remember off the top of my head.
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: Mine is The Kraken Sacrifice by Katie Roberts.
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: It is about a Squid Man.
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: Squid Man.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: So it's I love Katie Roberts' cover art for this series because they're all old timey bodice ripper covers, but with monsters on them.
- 8:45SPEAKER_01: I think it's the same lady because that's what she her in the snake man.
- 8:50SPEAKER_01: It's like an old timey Harlequin romance cover.
- 8:53SPEAKER_01: It's the same person.
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: Well, Katie Robert didn't write um the old the uh uh Morning Glory Milking farm.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: Let me look it up real quick.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: A Squid Man.
- 9:03SPEAKER_01: I just thought about Squidward just now.
- 9:05SPEAKER_01: I know that's inaccurate.
- 9:06SPEAKER_01: Tell me I'm inaccurate.
- 9:08SPEAKER_01: It doesn't look like that.
- 9:09SPEAKER_00: It is unaccurate.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: CM Nescosta is who wrote Morning Glory Milking Farm.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah.
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: But thank you everyone for tuning in.
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: This is just a taste of what you'll get listening to our lovely podcast.
