Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle talk. Tabernacle talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle talk. Today we are in Isaiah chapter
- 0:194, Isaiah chapter 4, and actually Isaiah 4 is a very,
- 0:25very short passage of scripture. And so we're going to be taking
- 0:30almost the entire chapter. We ended last episode with
- 0:35chapter 4 and verse #1 as it's all kind of 1 section in there,
- 0:41as Isaiah is prophesying about the southern Kingdom of Judah,
- 0:45about as we saw or heard last episode, God's judgment on the
- 0:53women of Judah, even as he had prophesied about his judgments
- 0:57on the men of Judah. And so we saw some different
- 1:00aspects of that. And then this episode kind of
- 1:05has the good news with the bad news.
- 1:08So over the last several episodes, since we ended chapter
- 1:142, it's been all pretty, pretty bad.
- 1:19Chapter 3 is here's God removing former places of trust, people
- 1:27that Judah and Jerusalem would have relied on in order to give
- 1:33them safety or security as a nation and as people.
- 1:38And so now God says, yes, I'm taking away a bunch of stuff
- 1:42from your lives, but there is going to be something good that
- 1:46happens when you guys lose everything except for me.
- 1:53And so let's read chapter Yeah, chapter 4, verses 2 through 6
- 1:58right now about the good news, even with the bad news of
- 2:02Judah's exile. He says on that day when
- 2:06everything else has run out for Judah, for Israel, says on that
- 2:11day, the branch of Yahweh will be beautiful and glorious, and
- 2:17the fruit of the land will be the pride and glory of Israel's
- 2:22survivors. Whoever remains in Zion and
- 2:26whoever is left in Jerusalem will be called holy.
- 2:29All in Jerusalem written in the book of Life, When the Lord has
- 2:33washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion and cleansed
- 2:37the blood guilt from the heart of Jerusalem by a spirit of
- 2:41judgement and a spirit of burning, then y'all we will
- 2:45create a cloud of smoke by day and a glowing flame of fire by
- 2:49night over the entire side of Mount Zion and over its
- 2:52assemblies. For there will be a canopy over
- 2:55all the glory, and there will be a shelter for shade from heat by
- 3:00day, and a refuge and shelter from storm and rain.
- 3:06So here, as Isaiah thinks about the hardships that the people
- 3:11would encounter, he wants to give them hope even in the
- 3:15brokenness. And he looks forward in time.
- 3:21And certainly he can see Israel's survivors there.
- 3:25He can see those that would not be taken away captive to
- 3:28Babylon. But he sees even further past
- 3:32that to what God is ultimately doing.
- 3:35You see, though God was bringing judgement on Israel and Judah
- 3:40for their sin, He was not done with them.
- 3:43He wasn't throwing them away. Instead, He had future plans for
- 3:48their spiritual prospering. So let's look at some of these
- 3:53things that are specifically stated in verse #2 It says on
- 3:57that day, the branch of Yahweh will be beautiful and glorious,
- 4:02and the fruit of the land will be the pride and glory of
- 4:05Israel's survivors. Here.
- 4:07This branch of Yahweh is someone.
- 4:10It is a person and I want to highlight that real quick
- 4:13because the latter half the verse talks about the fruit of
- 4:15the land. So that would be the crops that
- 4:18are produced or the animal herds that would be around that would
- 4:22be able to be killed for meat or perhaps for, you know, to be
- 4:28sheared for clothing, things like that.
- 4:31So God says there will be enough plenty in the land to be able to
- 4:38be the, if you will, pride and glory of Israel's survivors
- 4:42here, that there is able to be sufficient provision for the
- 4:48needs of God's people. What a joy that we can find
- 4:52sufficient provision from our God for the needs that we have
- 4:56today. I think about the Lord's Prayer
- 5:00some that I pray nightly with my kids.
- 5:03Give us this day Our Daily Bread, or as I kind of
- 5:07paraphrased it for my kiddos, give us what we need today, That
- 5:12every single day that goes by, you know, if I ask God, hey God,
- 5:16give me enough provision for next Thursday.
- 5:19Right now it's a Saturday when I'm recording this.
- 5:22Like God could give that to me, but it wouldn't do me any good
- 5:25until I got to that Thursday. I, I don't need it until
- 5:31Thursday, but when Thursday comes, I'm going to be really
- 5:34glad for the Lords provision. And so even here with the
- 5:38remainders there in Israel, the survivors that are there, they
- 5:43are grateful for God's provision.
- 5:45And God says I am going to take care of you.
- 5:47Just because you have messed up, just because there had to be
- 5:51consequences for your actions does not mean that I do not love
- 5:55you, that I do not care about you, that I don't have a purpose
- 5:58even in the hardship. And I want to encourage you.
- 6:03Sometimes in our lives we go through difficulties and we we
- 6:07have not, if you will, earned it, quote UN quote that just as
- 6:11a result of us living in a fallen world as a result of us
- 6:14having the enemy of our souls, Satan himself that is against
- 6:19us. Sometimes we will go through
- 6:21hard times. There are times, and we would
- 6:24read this throughout Scripture where we do fail the Lord and as
- 6:29a result, we go into a time of testing or hardship so that God
- 6:35is able to, as he talks about here in these verses, refine us
- 6:40through, if you will, through fire.
- 6:42That as our lives heat up, what was sin in our life kind of
- 6:48rises to the top and we begin to recognize bad habits or bad
- 6:53language or vocabulary that have just become a part of who we
- 6:58are. And so we recognize, man, this
- 7:01has to go. If I'm going to be one of these
- 7:03God people, one of the Jesus people, then I can't continue to
- 7:08be who I've been. And so we pursue that.
- 7:11We pursue the holiness of God, but he does so through the
- 7:15purpose of that refining fire like gold or silver, you heat
- 7:21up, it turns to liquid. All of the impurities, the
- 7:24imperfections. What is not gold or silver rises
- 7:27to the top. You scrape that off and what you
- 7:29are left with is pure and pure gold and silver.
- 7:33So that's sorry, I went on a little bit of a detour on that
- 7:39second part of our the first part of the earth.
- 7:41The part I wanted to talk about was on that day, the day of
- 7:43judgment. The branch of Yahweh will be
- 7:46beautiful and glorious. The branch of Yahweh is a person
- 7:50that's going to be referenced and talked about throughout
- 7:53Isaiah. And this would be ultimately
- 7:57Jesus. It is God Himself and His
- 8:00presence within us that as Isaiah fleshes this out through
- 8:06many chapters of his prophecies and poetry and writings, he
- 8:12makes it clearer and clearer for us who this branch of Yahweh is.
- 8:18Jesus in John 15 talks a little bit about these same thoughts
- 8:24that he says I am the vine and you are the branches, if you
- 8:27will. He is that main branch, that
- 8:30main shoot and we are the offshoots.
- 8:34And so Jesus talks a little bit about that.
- 8:37I'm going to leave that particular phrase alone for the
- 8:41moment because there are going to come many more chapters where
- 8:46where we will dive into more detail as more detail is given.
- 8:50Verse #3 I think is so beautiful.
- 8:55It's something. Well here, let me read it again
- 8:58for you and then I can talk about it.
- 9:00Whoever remains in Zion and whoever is left in Jerusalem
- 9:04will be called holy. There's going to come a day as
- 9:08Isaiah thinks about the people of God and their story together.
- 9:12And he says when God has done his purifying work, not only
- 9:18will he provide for our physical needs there of, you know, the
- 9:24fruit of the land being the pride and glory of Israel's
- 9:26survivors. He says not only will God care
- 9:29for our physical needs, but God is going to care for our
- 9:32spiritual needs. That's why He created us.
- 9:35And what he says there is that whoever is left in Jerusalem,
- 9:39whoever's remaining in Zion, will be called holy.
- 9:43All in Jerusalem. Written in the book of life.
- 9:47The Apostle John would pick up that thread.
- 9:51I believe this will come up a few times as well in the
- 9:55remainder of Isaiah and John writes about this book of life
- 9:59in which those that have been redeemed by the blood of the
- 10:02Lamb, we had our names written in that book from before the
- 10:07foundation of the world. And what a joy that that is,
- 10:10that our God who sees all, who knows all.
- 10:14He was the one that wrote my name down before the earth was
- 10:19ever formed, before Brian and Sally self, my parents before
- 10:24they ever met. That God had a plan for my life.
- 10:28He had a plan for my redemption. And the same is true for every
- 10:32person that has ever or will ever put their faith in Christ
- 10:36Jesus the Lord. That our God has good plans for
- 10:41us, as we would read in Jeremiah.
- 10:43Plans to prosper us to, to help us, to aid us in the work that
- 10:48he has called us to do. His plans are not to harm us or
- 10:52to cause the detriment of our goal, but instead that we would
- 10:57be able to enjoy our relationship with God.
- 11:01And I love this. Even today, at the time that I'm
- 11:04recording this, I'm walking through a monthly book study of
- 11:09Paul David Tripp's book Do You Believe?
- 11:1212 Doctrines of God and their practical effects on our
- 11:16everyday life. And today's chapters were on the
- 11:20holiness of God. And so I think here, whoever
- 11:23remains in Zion, whoever is left in Jerusalem will be called
- 11:27holy. All in Jerusalem written in the
- 11:29Book of life. That God's holiness, that
- 11:32holiness that we're going to read about in just two chapters
- 11:35in chapter 6, that holiness of God, that the angels surrounding
- 11:39the throne of God day and night cry out holy, holy, holy is the
- 11:44Lord God Almighty. The whole earth is filled with
- 11:48his glory. That is the holy God that then
- 11:53gives His Holiness to his people through the work of the Holy
- 11:58Spirit and though we are not yet who we will be on that wonderful
- 12:02day when the branch of Jesse this is also I'm going to jump
- 12:08back real quick as well. Here's the problem with it isn't
- 12:15actually a problem. I love that scripture is so
- 12:21interconnected and that we are called to read it and reread it
- 12:26and love it over and over and over again.
- 12:31And as we do so, we will find new threads throughout the
- 12:37biblical story over and over again.
- 12:41I wanted to look because I could not recall offhand if the branch
- 12:47of Jesse was something that was mentioned in one particular book
- 12:52of the Bible. Nope, because that would have
- 12:54been pre Jesse. So.
- 12:57But Jesus is this one that is, He is ruling over us.
- 13:00He is the ultimate pride and glory that we have.
- 13:03He is beautiful, He is glorious. He's providing for the needs of
- 13:06His people. They have now become holy.
- 13:09They are set apart, they are righteous.
- 13:11They are no longer the awful sinful people that we used to
- 13:15be. That Jesus is accomplishing all
- 13:18of this. I love in verse #4 when the Lord
- 13:21has washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion.
- 13:24We learned about that last episode that these people that
- 13:27were proud, that were immoral, that were greedy and covetous
- 13:35and hoarded wealth, instead of being generous towards those in
- 13:38need, that God is going to forgive them to wash away their
- 13:43sin. It is not that God only loves
- 13:47those who have never done anything wrong.
- 13:49Instead, what we're told here is that those that were filthy are
- 13:53being washed clean. He says and has cleansed the
- 13:57blood guilt from the heart of Jerusalem by a spirit of
- 14:01judgement and a spirit of burning.
- 14:03That they're in Scripture. Fire is talked about as this
- 14:07purifying thing. You can remember when we were
- 14:10back in Hebrews many, many months ago now, that it says our
- 14:13God is a consuming fire. That fire, yes, is God's
- 14:18judgment, but God's judgment is for a purpose.
- 14:21It is so that what is left behind after the judgment is
- 14:26pure and good and right. And so certainly that has its
- 14:32greatest application when Jesus returns, that on that day, it's
- 14:38going to be a day of incredible judgment all over the world.
- 14:42But what remains after will be good verse #5 then Yahweh will
- 14:48create a cloud of smoke by day and a glowing flame of fire by
- 14:52night over the entire side of Mount Zion and over its
- 14:56assemblies. So here again, as Isaiah is
- 14:58thinking about the story of the children of Israel, he remembers
- 15:02back to the wanderings in the wilderness and when Israel was
- 15:06coming out of captivity in Egypt, that they were led by the
- 15:12pillar of smoke by day and the pillar of fire by night that
- 15:17guided the Israelites to where they needed to go.
- 15:20And so, if you will, out of the captivity of Babylon, God would
- 15:25then lead his people back, out, back into the promised Land
- 15:30where they would receive the promises that God had given
- 15:34them, even as he told them in Numbers and in Deuteronomy that
- 15:39he knew Israel would fail. They would walk away from him.
- 15:43They would live and sin. He would need to judge them.
- 15:47They would need to because they had been behaving and believing
- 15:50and acting like all of the nations around them.
- 15:53God would send them into exile for a time to say, you want to
- 15:56behave like the other kids, fine, you get to be with the
- 15:59other kids now. But then he would bring them
- 16:02back in again after exile. And so Isaiah here is
- 16:06prophesying, just as God brought his his people to the promised
- 16:10land from Egypt, God will bring his people back from Babylon,
- 16:14from Syria as well and would bring them back to the promised
- 16:20land. It says there will be a canopy
- 16:23over all of the glory, or the glory will be a canopy.
- 16:27That is, God's presence will be the overshadowing thing over all
- 16:33of Zion and Jerusalem, that God's glory goes out from that
- 16:38place, not just in, if you will, the Holy of Holies, not just in
- 16:43the temple, but over all of Jerusalem, over all of Judah.
- 16:48God would be there and his glory would be incredible, and it
- 16:51would be a place of safety, which as you think about the
- 16:55biblical story, is such a comfort that most people when
- 16:59they encountered God's glory, they were rightfully fearful
- 17:04because they didn't want to be destroyed, to encounter God's
- 17:07holiness. Even as we went through the book
- 17:09of Leviticus together. It's a little bit like
- 17:12encountering radiation without a radiation suit.
- 17:15And so you could fear for your life, but hear what God says is
- 17:18His glory is going to be there, not just in one room or in one
- 17:23building, but over all of His people.
- 17:26And it's going to be a place of safety, not a place of hardship.
- 17:31And how God describes it, there is a shelter for shade from heat
- 17:35by day and a refuge and shelter from storm and rain.
- 17:40You're not going to experience a heat stroke there.
- 17:42You're not going to have to fear lightning or, you know, getting
- 17:46a cold from being out in the rain.
- 17:50That there is safety within the glory of God.
- 17:53And what a joyous thing that as we think about Jesus and what
- 17:56Jesus accomplished for us, that He made the glory of God, which
- 17:59once was a fearful thing, that we could not boldly go to God or
- 18:06be in His presence for fear of our own destruction.
- 18:10That Jesus is the one who has made the way so that we could be
- 18:13made new. That we are indwelt by the Holy
- 18:16Spirit, and that instead of us trying to get to God and be holy
- 18:20enough for Him, God's Holy Spirit took up residence inside
- 18:24of us, changing us from the inside out.
- 18:28Until one day we stand before Him in the presence of His
- 18:31glory, blameless with great joy, even as we hear in the end of
- 18:37Jude. I love this picture and this
- 18:40thought of what God has accomplished, what he did with
- 18:44the children of Israel, the promises that he made.
- 18:47And even we know God did bring back the children of Israel into
- 18:51the land after the exile. That's even how Jesus and his
- 18:54family and the priests and the sacrificial system and all of
- 18:58that was there in Israel in the 1st century AD, hundreds of
- 19:04years after all of this took place and after Isaiah
- 19:06prophesied that though Isaiah humanly could not have known
- 19:11what was going to happen 5 or 600 years into the future, God
- 19:14knew. And in his Holy Word, He
- 19:17outlined exactly what would happen so that we could trust
- 19:20that this God who knows the future, who knows the past, who
- 19:24knows who we are in the present, that we can give ourselves holy
- 19:28and entirely to Him. Thanks for tuning in.
- 19:31I hope that you have a wonderful day.
- 19:32See you next episode as we begin Chapter 5.
