- 0:02Speaker 1: Hello and welcome to this very special episode of Outspoken. Sophie,
- 0:06Speaker 1: you are joining us back on the mics five weeks
- 0:09Speaker 1: after giving birth to your beautiful son, Luca. You are
- 0:12Speaker 1: currently holding him. So if you hear any cute little
- 0:14Speaker 1: baby noises, that is Luca. He keeps dropping his dummy
- 0:17Speaker 1: at the moment. I'm just like watching him. I'm watching Archie.
- 0:20Speaker 1: We're recording this on a Sunday afternoon and our neighbours
- 0:22Speaker 1: have also started to drill something. So hopefully we get
- 0:26Speaker 1: there in the end.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Now, for those who don't know, Luca's full name is
- 0:29Speaker 2: Luca Archie Hancock. So for those who don't know, how
- 0:32Speaker 2: did this name come about?
- 0:33Speaker 1: I think OGs will pick up that Archie is my
- 0:36Speaker 1: dog's name, my firstborn child's name. And I think it's
- 0:40Speaker 1: a real millennial thing to give the middle name as
- 0:42Speaker 1: your dog's name. I've heard so many people doing it.
- 0:45Speaker 1: I actually got the idea from one of my friends
- 0:47Speaker 1: who actually owns Archie's brother. So she was going to
- 0:50Speaker 1: call her son or give her son the middle name
- 0:53Speaker 1: Winston after him. she ended up not doing it and
- 0:56Speaker 1: going with a family name, which could have been a
- 0:59Speaker 1: good idea. In hindsight. In saying that, we love the
- 1:04Speaker 1: name Archie. And if we didn't have Archie, Luca's first
- 1:07Speaker 1: name probably was going to be Archie. And I just
- 1:10Speaker 1: love that Archie is going to be such, we think
- 1:12Speaker 1: he's his big brother and he's going to be such
- 1:14Speaker 1: a big part of his life. And I think it's
- 1:15Speaker 1: a way to always have Archie in our lives forever.
- 1:17Speaker 1: So That is why we chose that as the middle name.
- 1:20Speaker 2: But there was also a bit of a Love Island
- 1:22Speaker 2: theme with the name.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Yeah. Look, I mean, I did drop a few clues
- 1:26Speaker 1: a few weeks ago. I said that in my baby
- 1:28Speaker 1: shower post, I was getting all influencer and I said
- 1:31Speaker 1: that there was a bit of a clue in there
- 1:33Speaker 1: as to what his name was. Now that clue is
- 1:36Speaker 1: that Amy, for my baby shower, you made me, was
- 1:38Speaker 1: it scratchy cards that were find the dad?
- 1:41Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Yeah. And basically I had Luca Bish, who was one
- 1:45Speaker 1: of my favorite contestants on Love Island and My husband
- 1:47Speaker 1: keeps saying, don't tell people that we named him after
- 1:50Speaker 1: Luka Bish. We didn't name him after him. We were
- 1:53Speaker 1: inspired by that name. But you named him after Luka Bish. No,
- 1:56Speaker 1: we just love the name. As soon as his name
- 1:58Speaker 1: was on Love Island, we were like, that is such
- 2:00Speaker 1: a cool name. And I think also because I liked Luka,
- 2:03Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, I'd love to have a son that
- 2:04Speaker 1: had that sort of personality. Well, it's also difficult because
- 2:08Speaker 1: you really liked the name Henry. And Amy went with Harry,
- 2:11Speaker 1: which is, of course, traditionally short for Henry. And both
- 2:14Speaker 1: of your husband's surname start with an H. So it
- 2:17Speaker 1: could have been Harry Humphreys and Henry Hancock. I don't
- 2:23Speaker 1: actually think he looks like a Henry though. Looking at him,
- 2:25Speaker 1: I'm like, I feel like he suits the name Luca.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Being the last sister out of us to give birth,
- 2:31Speaker 1: did you feel any different type of pressure on you?
- 2:35Speaker 1: Because obviously you'd heard in great detail our birth stories.
- 2:38Speaker 1: We've sat down and recorded each of these episodes for
- 2:40Speaker 1: Amy and I. Look, as much as I'd heard your
- 2:43Speaker 1: birth stories in depth, I don't think anything could have
- 2:46Speaker 1: really prepared me for what I was about to go through.
- 2:49Speaker 1: I purposely didn't look too much into cesareans because I'm
- 2:54Speaker 1: the sort of person I'd rather, I think I'd build
- 2:56Speaker 1: up too much anxiety if I knew the complete ins
- 2:59Speaker 1: and outs of all the medical information. But I probably
- 3:02Speaker 1: should have looked more into it because I was actually
- 3:04Speaker 1: horrified at how much I felt during surgery. And I
- 3:07Speaker 1: was like the whole time to Brandon, I'm like, is
- 3:09Speaker 1: this normal? Like has Has this not worked properly? Like
- 3:12Speaker 1: I'm feeling a lot. See, I don't think that is
- 3:16Speaker 1: the norm. I mean, I didn't experience that, Amy. I
- 3:18Speaker 1: think your experience was similar to mine where I felt
- 3:20Speaker 1: a bit of pressure, but it wasn't painful.
- 3:22Speaker 2: I remember the doctor told me that I was going
- 3:24Speaker 2: to feel like I was a handbag that they were
- 3:26Speaker 2: rummaging through. And I feel like that was a pretty
- 3:28Speaker 2: good description.
- 3:29Speaker 1: You gave me that analogy, Amy. And during the procedure,
- 3:31Speaker 1: I was like, wow, this definitely feels a lot more
- 3:34Speaker 1: severe than that. They had to lower my head during
- 3:37Speaker 1: the surgery quite a few times to make sure that
- 3:39Speaker 1: the anesthetic was working properly. This is propping you down.
- 3:41Speaker 1: So it kind of flows. Yeah. And even before they
- 3:44Speaker 1: started the surgery, they kept being like, I had this ice.
- 3:46Speaker 1: They're like, can you feel that? I'm like, Yes, I can.
- 3:49Speaker 1: I can feel it.
- 3:50Speaker 2: I want to know how Brandon went with this all
- 3:52Speaker 2: because a listener wrote in and asked, did his dad
- 3:54Speaker 2: have to step in for him?
- 3:56Speaker 1: I feel like we've got to rewind to the start because, Amy,
- 3:58Speaker 1: I really enjoyed hearing about the lead up to you
- 4:00Speaker 1: actually going to the hospital. There was that infamous moment
- 4:03Speaker 1: where Dale wanted to stop for McDonald's on the way there.
- 4:06Speaker 1: We actually ended up having to go in at– we
- 4:09Speaker 1: had to be there at 6.45 at Flinders Medical Centre.
- 4:12Speaker 1: So no stop for Macca's breakfast? No, and there was
- 4:15Speaker 1: already some contention. I think we sort of alluded to
- 4:17Speaker 1: it on the podcast, Kate, in the weeks leading up
- 4:19Speaker 1: to me having Luca because I was actually given the
- 4:23Speaker 1: same date as Jack's birthday and we couldn't believe it.
- 4:27Speaker 1: We were like, are they serious? Like when the person
- 4:30Speaker 1: called through– because we knew that our due dates were
- 4:32Speaker 1: going to be pretty similar, Kate, but obviously a year apart.
- 4:36Speaker 1: And when the person from the hospital rang– With the date,
- 4:39Speaker 1: I just knew it was going to be the 17th.
- 4:40Speaker 1: And I was like, oh, my God, is Kate going
- 4:42Speaker 1: to take this really badly? Because with us having to
- 4:45Speaker 1: share birthdays, we don't want our sons to have to
- 4:47Speaker 1: share everything. And we were like, oh, we're going to
- 4:49Speaker 1: have to do joint birthday parties or we're going to
- 4:51Speaker 1: have to fight for that date. Well, I think we're
- 4:54Speaker 1: still going to have to fight for the day, but
- 4:55Speaker 1: at least they have their own separate days. So a
- 4:58Speaker 1: week out from your scheduled date, you got a call
- 5:01Speaker 1: asking if you could come in a day earlier. Can
- 5:04Speaker 1: you take us back to that day, that morning of
- 5:06Speaker 1: that day? Oh. I feel like I've almost got a
- 5:08Speaker 1: bit of PTSD thinking back to that time because it
- 5:11Speaker 1: was such a whirlwind. I was trying so hard to
- 5:13Speaker 1: get everything ready in the weeks leading up to the
- 5:16Speaker 1: birth and our dog got really sick and we were
- 5:19Speaker 1: in and out of the vets. And then Brandon's parents
- 5:21Speaker 1: got COVID and we were worried that they wouldn't be
- 5:23Speaker 1: able to come and meet their grandson. And it was
- 5:26Speaker 1: all happening. And because I feel like you're very aware
- 5:29Speaker 1: that you're not going to have any time to do things.
- 5:31Speaker 1: So you're getting all these jobs out the way. And
- 5:33Speaker 1: The day before, I remember I was rushing around to
- 5:35Speaker 1: Big W, picking up last minute things that I needed.
- 5:38Speaker 1: And anyway, so somehow we actually did get some sleep
- 5:41Speaker 1: the night before, which I was very shocked about. But anyway,
- 5:44Speaker 1: we woke up early. I have to say, because I
- 5:47Speaker 1: did get a lot of questions about my makeup, funnily enough,
- 5:49Speaker 1: because I know, Kate, you get told that you're not
- 5:52Speaker 1: allowed to wear makeup when you're having a cesarean. Amy,
- 5:54Speaker 1: you bucked the trend and said, fuck it, I'm doing it.
- 5:56Speaker 1: I thought, nah, I'm doing it too. So I got
- 5:58Speaker 1: up very early. I put makeup on. I straighten my hair.
- 6:01Speaker 1: I'm like, I just want to feel like me. I
- 6:04Speaker 1: think during your pregnancy, you don't feel like you. I
- 6:06Speaker 1: did a tan as well.
- 6:07Speaker 2: What?
- 6:07Speaker 1: That was my last– well, not the night before, but
- 6:09Speaker 1: I did a tan leading into the birth. But you
- 6:12Speaker 1: would have missed your stomach though because you can't have it.
- 6:14Speaker 2: I did.
- 6:14Speaker 1: It was the weirdest looking tan. I also missed around
- 6:16Speaker 1: my boobs because I'm like, well, if I'm breastfeeding, I
- 6:18Speaker 1: don't want him drinking– the tan.
- 6:19Speaker 2: Wait, so where was the tan? Just on your neck
- 6:21Speaker 2: and your arms?
- 6:22Speaker 1: I did it all over, but I just didn't do
- 6:23Speaker 1: it near my, well, where the incision was going to be.
- 6:26Speaker 1: And I put a sports bra on, so I did
- 6:29Speaker 1: it around. So it would have looked really funny, but
- 6:32Speaker 1: that sounds really vain, but it was more that I
- 6:33Speaker 1: was feeling just not like myself. And I thought, well,
- 6:36Speaker 1: all these people are going to be seeing me in
- 6:38Speaker 1: the nudge. So I will try and put my best
- 6:41Speaker 1: foot forward.
- 6:41Speaker 2: It's whatever you've got to do to make yourself feel
- 6:44Speaker 2: a bit more secure on the day.
- 6:46Speaker 1: That's right. That's right. I mean, I put foundation on.
- 6:48Speaker 1: I didn't do too much else because I didn't want
- 6:50Speaker 1: them to be like, why do you have makeup on?
- 6:53Speaker 1: So no cut crease. No, I didn't do my regular lashes. No, no.
- 6:57Speaker 2: But actually the photo of you that you shared, I
- 7:00Speaker 2: actually took that photo and I felt so rude at
- 7:03Speaker 2: the time, but I was like, Soph, I think you
- 7:04Speaker 2: should brush your hair in the middle, like part it.
- 7:06Speaker 2: And do a nicer ponytail because your hair was a
- 7:08Speaker 2: bit all over the place. And I felt this pressure
- 7:10Speaker 2: to get a good photo of you because I knew
- 7:12Speaker 2: that if I didn't, I'd have to come back, do
- 7:15Speaker 2: it again.
- 7:16Speaker 1: And also I remember you messaging me being like, oh,
- 7:18Speaker 1: should I bring my hair straight?
- 7:20Speaker 2: No.
- 7:20Speaker 1: Did you actually end up using it? No. Yeah. I
- 7:22Speaker 1: was like, I don't think you need to. Look, I
- 7:24Speaker 1: did actually pack it, but no, I did not have
- 7:27Speaker 1: time or the need to use that item. But I mean,
- 7:30Speaker 1: you never know. So back to the morning. So were
- 7:36Speaker 1: you guys running on time? Did you feel prepared? We
- 7:39Speaker 1: were actually 10 minutes early. I was shocked. So we
- 7:41Speaker 1: arrived and the actual administration office where you check in
- 7:44Speaker 1: wasn't even open. I think I sent you guys a Snapchat.
- 7:46Speaker 1: I was like, oh my God. And it was just
- 7:49Speaker 1: such a nervous drive because it was pitch black as well.
- 7:51Speaker 1: It felt really scary. Like, you know, when you can't
- 7:53Speaker 1: even get your head around where you're going and what
- 7:55Speaker 1: you're doing. I was like, I can't believe I'm about
- 7:56Speaker 1: to be cut open. Like, I feel like we didn't
- 7:59Speaker 1: have any time to stop for any breakfast or you're
- 8:01Speaker 1: not allowed to have any food, but Brandon definitely didn't
- 8:03Speaker 1: stop for breakfast. It was funny though, because he obviously
- 8:06Speaker 1: has spoken about his fear of being there whilst the
- 8:10Speaker 1: surgery is happening. So he had packed a lot of
- 8:13Speaker 1: powerades in a bag. And when we finally got taken
- 8:17Speaker 1: through to the birthing suite or the waiting room, whatever
- 8:20Speaker 1: you would call it, he was told that he had
- 8:22Speaker 1: to put his bag, which had all of his stash
- 8:24Speaker 1: of drinks and also lollies to keep up his blood
- 8:26Speaker 1: sugar levels, away in a locker. And he was like,
- 8:30Speaker 1: are you sure that I can't keep this drink with me?
- 8:32Speaker 1: They're like, nope, it has to go away. And I
- 8:34Speaker 1: think the funniest bit is when the midwife comes in
- 8:37Speaker 1: and they ask you, have you shaved recently or do
- 8:40Speaker 1: you need to be shaved? And I had heard all
- 8:43Speaker 1: these horror stories about people getting staph infections from shaving
- 8:46Speaker 1: the night before. or doing it too soon in the
- 8:49Speaker 1: lead up. Now you're talking about your pubic area.
- 8:51Speaker 2: Yes.
- 8:52Speaker 1: So I probably left it a bit too long because
- 8:54Speaker 1: I thought, I don't want to be unsafe. Well, not
- 8:57Speaker 1: to share too many details, but it's quite hard to
- 9:00Speaker 1: manage hair in that area when you are heavily pregnant.
- 9:02Speaker 1: You can't even see your vagina for months. So I thought, oh,
- 9:06Speaker 1: I'm all good, whatever. And the midwife's like, oh, so
- 9:08Speaker 1: do you need us? I was like, no, I'm all good.
- 9:10Speaker 1: I did it a couple of weeks ago. I think
- 9:11Speaker 1: it should be fine. They're like, no, actually you do
- 9:14Speaker 1: need to be shaved. They got the weed whacker out.
- 9:16Speaker 1: Now I'm only telling this story because it was hilarious
- 9:19Speaker 1: because when there was another couple across from us and
- 9:23Speaker 1: we heard the midwife come in and she's like, now
- 9:26Speaker 1: have you shaved? Are you prepared? And she's like, yeah,
- 9:29Speaker 1: the hubby did it yesterday for me actually. That's a
- 9:32Speaker 1: good husband. Yeah, and I was like, hold on a
- 9:34Speaker 1: second though because the midwife's like, good job. I was like,
- 9:37Speaker 1: you're not supposed to do it the day before because
- 9:39Speaker 1: you might get scratches and it might get infected. I
- 9:41Speaker 1: was very confused. I think the funniest thing that happened
- 9:44Speaker 1: during this whole experience was when the midwife handed us
- 9:48Speaker 1: the scrubs, so obviously a pair for Brandon and a
- 9:50Speaker 1: pair for myself, and she said, make sure you take
- 9:52Speaker 1: your underpants off. Anyway, so I went to a separate room.
- 9:55Speaker 1: We both got changed. Brandon came back in and said,
- 9:57Speaker 1: was I supposed to remove my underpants too?
- 9:59Speaker 2: Oh, God.
- 10:00Speaker 1: I thought that that was a ridiculous question until our
- 10:03Speaker 1: friends across the ward from us again piped up and
- 10:06Speaker 1: her husband asked the same question, said, oh, am I
- 10:08Speaker 1: supposed to take my underpants off too? What? I mean, obviously, Sophie,
- 10:12Speaker 1: you're having to have your underpants off because you're inserting
- 10:15Speaker 1: a catheter in, like you're giving birth. But I would
- 10:18Speaker 1: like to know why Brandon and the gentleman across the
- 10:21Speaker 1: hallway thought that they needed their jocks off. But maybe
- 10:24Speaker 1: the midwife had a bit of authority when she spoke
- 10:26Speaker 1: and they didn't want to do the wrong thing. In
- 10:28Speaker 1: case maybe Brandon shit himself or something. Doesn't everyone's partners
- 10:30Speaker 1: look so good in the scrubs though? I mean, you're
- 10:32Speaker 1: there looking the worst you've probably ever looked and then
- 10:34Speaker 1: your husband's all looking great. And their scrubs look like
- 10:37Speaker 1: they've been worn for the last like 30 years. They're
- 10:39Speaker 1: not new.
- 10:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:41Speaker 1: Well, it was really frustrating though, because even though we
- 10:43Speaker 1: got in super early, we thought, oh, everything's happening so quick.
- 10:46Speaker 1: We're going to be in there soon. But then we
- 10:49Speaker 1: got told that, and mistake had happened. So this had
- 10:52Speaker 1: to do with the original date. So because we'd been
- 10:54Speaker 1: put forward a day early, we were apparently on an
- 10:57Speaker 1: emergency list. So they'd forgotten to take us off the
- 11:00Speaker 1: emergency list. So because it was an elective cesarean, they said, look,
- 11:04Speaker 1: I'm sorry, this isn't going to happen till like later
- 11:07Speaker 1: in the afternoon. And I was so pissed off. Like,
- 11:09Speaker 1: It got to the point where they then said, oh,
- 11:10Speaker 1: we'll give you some water. You can start drinking. You're
- 11:12Speaker 1: probably quite dehydrated. Anyway, then within half an hour, they're
- 11:16Speaker 1: back saying, actually, we're going to do this in the
- 11:18Speaker 1: next half an hour.
- 11:19Speaker 2: I just loved Brandon retelling how when he walked into
- 11:22Speaker 2: the surgery, all of the people were like, don't touch
- 11:24Speaker 2: the equipment.
- 11:25Speaker 1: Like, what do they.
- 11:26Speaker 2: Expect that the husband's going to do? Like, go pick
- 11:28Speaker 2: up a scalpel?
- 11:29Speaker 1: Especially Brandon. He wouldn't even look at the equipment. He
- 11:32Speaker 1: plays by the rules. He wouldn't touch anything. But it
- 11:34Speaker 1: was quite confronting having the epidural because The anaesthetist told
- 11:38Speaker 1: me beforehand, oh, it should take about four to five
- 11:40Speaker 1: minutes to get it in. Mine took close to half
- 11:42Speaker 1: an hour to get in. I was so uncomfortable. I
- 11:45Speaker 1: was sitting on the edge of the operating table, leaning
- 11:47Speaker 1: down for half an hour. This is over your bump.
- 11:51Speaker 1: It was so sore. And I kept saying to Brandon,
- 11:52Speaker 1: because he was there holding my hand and.
- 11:55Speaker 2: He's like, it's fine. It's fine.
- 11:56Speaker 1: I'm like, are you sure? Like, is this normal? And
- 11:58Speaker 1: he said it was really bad because he could see
- 12:00Speaker 1: everything happening in the background and they were struggling to
- 12:03Speaker 1: find the right spot. And he's like, I could see
- 12:06Speaker 1: a needle, like this massive needle that kept trying to
- 12:09Speaker 1: point you back. They tried five times. It was horrendous.
- 12:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:12Speaker 1: They had to have a few goes at mine. At
- 12:14Speaker 1: one point they're like, oh, do you think it's in?
- 12:15Speaker 1: I was like, you bloody tell me. It's funny because
- 12:18Speaker 1: around Mother's Day, an image of the epidural needle went
- 12:21Speaker 1: viral and I was Praying that you didn't see it.
- 12:24Speaker 1: I actually haven't seen it to this day. Oh, my God.
- 12:26Speaker 1: It's like, oh, yeah, it's long. Yeah, that was probably
- 12:28Speaker 1: one of the worst bits of it. Because there were
- 12:31Speaker 1: two anaesthetists in there. And the one who I'd spoken
- 12:34Speaker 1: to earlier, he was clearly the senior guy there. He
- 12:37Speaker 1: had to take over and do it himself. So I
- 12:38Speaker 1: think it must have been maybe a junior person doing it. Anyway,
- 12:41Speaker 1: a few weeks leading into my birth, Kate, we spoke
- 12:43Speaker 1: about how Anna McAvoy had that very glamorous C-section photo.
- 12:46Speaker 1: And I was joking that there was a bit of
- 12:48Speaker 1: pressure on me to make sure I had a nice one.
- 12:50Speaker 1: To put it out there, we had a lovely guy
- 12:52Speaker 1: who went to the end of the earth to try
- 12:54Speaker 1: and snap as many photos as he could during the
- 12:56Speaker 1: whole procedure, like to the point where I have seen
- 12:59Speaker 1: too much of my guts. He got too overexcited because
- 13:04Speaker 1: I haven't been able to look at the photos because
- 13:06Speaker 1: Brandon's like, you really don't want to see that. When
- 13:08Speaker 1: people will say, oh, a C-section is the cop out,
- 13:10Speaker 1: it's the easy way out. It definitely is not. There
- 13:13Speaker 1: is something so confronting about being operated on whilst you
- 13:17Speaker 1: are completely with it. Going back to the photo, though,
- 13:19Speaker 1: it was quite funny because I said to Brandon, I'm like, Brandon,
- 13:21Speaker 1: can you take my hairnet off? I just want to
- 13:23Speaker 1: get a nice photo. And he's like, we are not
- 13:24Speaker 1: taking the hairnet off in this situation. So I had
- 13:26Speaker 1: the most horrendous photo.
- 13:27Speaker 2: Yeah, you're not allowed to take it off.
- 13:29Speaker 1: How about all these other people? People do. They just
- 13:31Speaker 1: slip it off. But I have to say, I am
- 13:33Speaker 1: usually not the most emotional person. I did have a
- 13:36Speaker 1: bit of a tear when Luca came out. It was
- 13:39Speaker 1: the most incredible experience. we had Taylor Swift, of course,
- 13:43Speaker 1: playing the whole time. What song was playing?
- 13:46Speaker 2: Golden.
- 13:46Speaker 1: So that's actually the song that I chose on Instagram.
- 13:49Speaker 1: And yeah, it was just such a special moment. And
- 13:51Speaker 1: it was so sweet because Brandon could see how stressed
- 13:53Speaker 1: I was during the procedure because I could feel so
- 13:55Speaker 1: much of what was going on. And he kept saying
- 13:57Speaker 1: to me during it, now what song is this? Like,
- 14:00Speaker 1: tell me the name of the song. Like, he was
- 14:01Speaker 1: amazing throughout the whole thing. And getting back to one
- 14:04Speaker 1: of the original questions, no, he didn't get his dad
- 14:07Speaker 1: to step in. He was amazing. He actually did cut
- 14:10Speaker 1: the umbilical cord as well. So he said he was like,
- 14:14Speaker 1: I saw all of this gory shit going on that
- 14:16Speaker 1: I thought I can cut the umbilical cord.
- 14:18Speaker 2: This is nothing compared to what you're going through.
- 14:20Speaker 1: Has Brandon's fear of hospitals now decreased since the experience? Well,
- 14:26Speaker 1: I don't know. We did have a kind of a
- 14:29Speaker 1: rough stay there because we were all ready to go
- 14:33Speaker 1: on day two And we'd actually packed up our whole room.
- 14:37Speaker 1: I was so excited to leave. Like, you know, you
- 14:38Speaker 1: just want to be home and you want to start
- 14:40Speaker 1: that next chapter. But the pediatrician picked up on the
- 14:44Speaker 1: fact that Luca was doing this little twitch and I
- 14:48Speaker 1: hadn't even noticed it. I think, yeah, we just hadn't
- 14:50Speaker 1: noticed it at all. And it's really lucky she picked
- 14:53Speaker 1: up on it because it turned out that he had
- 14:55Speaker 1: really low blood sugar levels. And this was due to
- 14:58Speaker 1: the fact that, and this is the case with so
- 15:00Speaker 1: many babies, because your milk doesn't come in for a
- 15:02Speaker 1: few days, you were feeding them the smallest amount of
- 15:05Speaker 1: colostrum possible. And we went in knowing that we wanted
- 15:09Speaker 1: to mix feed him. Day Dot, you guys told me
- 15:13Speaker 1: you should bring in some formula. I did not because
- 15:15Speaker 1: I know that there's a lot of midwives who are
- 15:16Speaker 1: really against formula and I just felt too awkward to
- 15:19Speaker 1: do it. I wish I had because he was struggling
- 15:22Speaker 1: to put on enough weight. He was born at 3.1 kilograms.
- 15:25Speaker 1: He's always been a really small baby throughout the whole thing.
- 15:28Speaker 1: My stomach has been measuring small the whole time. And
- 15:31Speaker 1: basically we did request, could we please have some formula
- 15:35Speaker 1: on day two? Now the midwife also had suggested it
- 15:38Speaker 1: as well, but the person who was higher up said, no,
- 15:41Speaker 1: we just are going to get you to try and
- 15:43Speaker 1: pump more and try and get more colostrum out. Ridiculous
- 15:45Speaker 1: that they don't go by what the parent wants. And
- 15:47Speaker 1: also because he was throwing up a lot of mucus,
- 15:49Speaker 1: which can be a side effect of having a cesarean
- 15:52Speaker 1: because when they push through the birth canal vaginally, it
- 15:55Speaker 1: pushes a lot of the mucus and fluid out of
- 15:57Speaker 1: their lungs yeah that was probably one of the scariest
- 15:59Speaker 1: moments i think on day two it was really lucky
- 16:01Speaker 1: there was a midwife in the room because he started
- 16:03Speaker 1: coughing and choking up on it and he almost turned
- 16:05Speaker 1: blue so yeah that was stopping him from taking in
- 16:08Speaker 1: a lot of calories as well so yeah that led
- 16:11Speaker 1: to him unfortunately having low blood sugar levels so we
- 16:14Speaker 1: got taken down to the neonatal ward and i have
- 16:18Speaker 1: to say the whole the whole medical team even though
- 16:20Speaker 1: the midwives are against formula they were all so lovely
- 16:24Speaker 1: everyone was so incredible and I feel like I became
- 16:26Speaker 1: friends with so many of the midwives there, like the
- 16:28Speaker 1: ones who would come in for the late night feeds.
- 16:30Speaker 1: We got chatting about Love Island and just so many
- 16:32Speaker 1: different things. That was so lovely. But yeah, it was
- 16:36Speaker 1: super scary because I never, ever thought that we would
- 16:38Speaker 1: be in that situation. There were so many very premature
- 16:43Speaker 1: babies in there and there was a really scary moment
- 16:46Speaker 1: where he was having his blood taken and all of
- 16:49Speaker 1: a sudden, a parent pushed the emergency button and literally
- 16:53Speaker 1: every single doctor and nurse there sprinted to this room
- 16:57Speaker 1: to try and help this poor baby out. And that
- 17:00Speaker 1: just set me off. And I remember thinking, oh my God,
- 17:02Speaker 1: if that's the reaction to a button being pressed down here,
- 17:04Speaker 1: this is pretty serious that we're down here. And I
- 17:06Speaker 1: think it was extra difficult for you because you'd recently
- 17:10Speaker 1: seen Amy stay for two nights and get discharged very quickly.
- 17:13Speaker 1: And the same experience for me, So it was just like,
- 17:16Speaker 1: hang on, what? Yeah, well, because he also had jaundice
- 17:19Speaker 1: as well and he was quite orange. But I remember
- 17:22Speaker 1: Harry had it to a certain extent. Jack seemed to
- 17:24Speaker 1: have it to a certain extent. But yeah, it got
- 17:26Speaker 1: to a situation where poor Luca had to go into
- 17:29Speaker 1: an incubator and they were going to have to administer
- 17:31Speaker 1: an IV drip to him. They said it was quite
- 17:35Speaker 1: a confronting situation and we might not want to see it. Luckily,
- 17:39Speaker 1: he did perk up and we gave him some formula,
- 17:42Speaker 1: which then raised his blood sugar levels. So he was
- 17:45Speaker 1: able to come back to our room, but he had
- 17:46Speaker 1: to stay in the incubator for six hours. So we
- 17:48Speaker 1: had to go back to our room and it was
- 17:49Speaker 1: just so difficult leaving him. And whilst we were there,
- 17:52Speaker 1: we were hearing all these stories about other parents who
- 17:55Speaker 1: had to stay on the ward there and their partners
- 17:57Speaker 1: had to leave. And that was my biggest fear being
- 17:59Speaker 1: left there by myself. Cause I mean, you're recovering from
- 18:02Speaker 1: major surgery as it is. And I mean, I was
- 18:05Speaker 1: pretty good. I was walking around day two. I couldn't
- 18:07Speaker 1: believe it. Like you were just up and about because
- 18:10Speaker 1: I think it was on day two that it hit
- 18:12Speaker 1: me and also you, Amy. Like I remember you're on
- 18:14Speaker 1: a high the first day and then the second day
- 18:16Speaker 1: you're like, I've got to get out of bed and
- 18:18Speaker 1: like walk around. But you were amazing. I don't know
- 18:21Speaker 1: what it was. I think I had a lot of
- 18:22Speaker 1: adrenaline going because he wasn't doing so well. I think
- 18:25Speaker 1: I just felt like it's all about him. I've got
- 18:28Speaker 1: to get up. I've got to do these things. I've
- 18:29Speaker 1: got to make it happen. But, yeah, it wasn't the
- 18:32Speaker 1: nicest hospital stay. But, again, the staff was so incredible.
- 18:36Speaker 1: On a lighter note, someone messaged us asking– If we
- 18:40Speaker 1: snuck in some sombreros for you, what firstly was your
- 18:44Speaker 1: first meal after labor? Yeah, well, Brandon's job was the
- 18:49Speaker 1: Uber Eats collector, of course, because I couldn't actually walk,
- 18:52Speaker 1: but he organized for us to have McDonald's and we
- 18:56Speaker 1: actually had that two nights in a row because there's
- 18:58Speaker 1: a Macca's right near it. Yeah. And I just, I
- 19:01Speaker 1: almost just couldn't be bothered to make the decision. Like,
- 19:04Speaker 1: you know, you're like, oh, it's easy. You ended up
- 19:05Speaker 1: bringing in GYG, Amy, which was probably my most delicious
- 19:09Speaker 1: meal of the day. That was, I think, when we
- 19:11Speaker 1: were told that we had to stay an extra night
- 19:13Speaker 1: and I was feeling pretty sad and sorry for myself.
- 19:15Speaker 1: So that made it a little bit brighter. So sadly,
- 19:17Speaker 1: no Zambies. No Zambies. Yeah. I mean, we've got a
- 19:21Speaker 1: Zambies around the corner. I can have Zambies whenever I want,
- 19:23Speaker 1: but no, I didn't have Zambies. I didn't eat any
- 19:25Speaker 1: of the hospital food. Oh, did you have any of
- 19:28Speaker 1: the sandwiches? They were really nice. Yeah. I said to them, oh,
- 19:30Speaker 1: my sister's told me that there's this chicken sandwich that's delicious,
- 19:33Speaker 1: but they said, we've never had a chicken sandwich here.
- 19:35Speaker 2: So what the hell was I eating there?
- 19:37Speaker 1: I had a salad sandwich that was incredible. I had
- 19:39Speaker 1: a tomato and cheese sandwich. But again, I have to
- 19:42Speaker 1: talk about our friends across the world from us because
- 19:44Speaker 1: I was just about to enjoy this beautiful sandwich. I
- 19:47Speaker 1: think I'd had one bite and then the poor woman
- 19:50Speaker 1: across from me she'd also had a c-section and at
- 19:53Speaker 1: that moment she decided to well she started throwing up
- 19:56Speaker 1: and I was like, this is perfect timing. They're like,
- 19:59Speaker 1: would you like to go to your room now? I'm like, yes, please.
- 20:03Speaker 2: What was it like returning home? Because that must have
- 20:05Speaker 2: felt really good. And can you talk us through, I suppose,
- 20:07Speaker 2: what it's been like? Have you got into a routine
- 20:10Speaker 2: yet with Luca?
- 20:11Speaker 1: Yeah, again, it was interesting returning home because, you know,
- 20:15Speaker 1: I think once all babies leave, they do lose a
- 20:18Speaker 1: bit of their birth weight initially. So he went down
- 20:20Speaker 1: to 2.8 kilos. And due to his jaundice and also
- 20:23Speaker 1: the low blood sugar levels, We had to have midwives
- 20:27Speaker 1: coming every two days to retest him and there was
- 20:30Speaker 1: always this threat that I was going to have to
- 20:32Speaker 1: go back into the neonatal ward. So that was really
- 20:35Speaker 1: like weighing heavy on me for quite some time I think.
- 20:38Speaker 1: That was when– don't they say day three is when
- 20:40Speaker 1: you have your baby blues? Your down days. It's normally
- 20:43Speaker 1: when your milk comes in. So maybe like day four
- 20:46Speaker 1: or five. To be completely honest, I found the first
- 20:49Speaker 1: week really difficult. Like I– I think also the fact
- 20:53Speaker 1: that it was dark so early, I felt really quite down.
- 20:57Speaker 1: But I'm feeling a lot better now. I think it
- 20:59Speaker 1: was just that early week of getting used to everything
- 21:02Speaker 1: and just having that anxiety that I was going to
- 21:04Speaker 1: have to go back to the hospital. It felt like
- 21:06Speaker 1: a big cloud over you. And I think once he
- 21:08Speaker 1: finally got cleared of the blood sugar levels and the jaundice,
- 21:11Speaker 1: I felt a lot better. But again, because he is
- 21:14Speaker 1: a smaller baby, we've really been having to do a
- 21:17Speaker 1: lot of feed. So we are feeding him every three
- 21:19Speaker 1: hours during the day and then overnight every four hours.
- 21:21Speaker 1: So it's been quite intense. And I was initially breastfeeding
- 21:26Speaker 1: to begin with, but because he was struggling to put
- 21:29Speaker 1: on weight, I really wanted to make sure that I
- 21:31Speaker 1: was breastfeeding and topping up with formula. But then I
- 21:34Speaker 1: really wanted to express because I wanted to know exactly
- 21:36Speaker 1: how much he was getting. And that was the recommendation
- 21:39Speaker 1: from the doctor as well. So It's been an interesting ride.
- 21:45Speaker 1: In terms of your feeding schedule, because it is insane.
- 21:48Speaker 1: I was doing every four hours and I thought that
- 21:50Speaker 1: was bad. You guys have been making the experience a
- 21:53Speaker 1: little bit better by watching some old classics on the TV.
- 21:56Speaker 1: Oh yeah. For some reason, Brandon switched on Blue Water High.
- 22:01Speaker 1: That was, he's five years younger than me. So he
- 22:03Speaker 1: was actually of the age of being a child when
- 22:05Speaker 1: that show was on. So He loved it. It was
- 22:07Speaker 1: bringing back a lot of memories for him. So I
- 22:09Speaker 1: was first like, I don't want to watch this. As
- 22:11Speaker 1: soon as Declan from Neighbours came on, I was like, oh,
- 22:13Speaker 1: what's this about? This is quite– so I got hooked
- 22:16Speaker 1: on it and got into it. We've also been watching
- 22:18Speaker 1: Love Island. Thank God for Love Island UK being out.
- 22:21Speaker 1: That has been my show and what I've been living
- 22:24Speaker 1: for at the moment. It's so good. We haven't even
- 22:27Speaker 1: spoken about it on the podcast yet, but the producers–
- 22:29Speaker 1: The change-ups that they've done to that show to make
- 22:32Speaker 1: you hooked have been very good.
- 22:34Speaker 2: It's not a great time to have a newborn baby
- 22:36Speaker 2: called Harry when the series is on.
- 22:38Speaker 1: Actually, Harry's become one of my favorite characters on there now.
- 22:41Speaker 1: Or characters. Or Harrison's made him look a lot better recently.
- 22:46Speaker 1: Harry's grown on me because at first I'm like, oh, yuck.
- 22:48Speaker 1: And now I'm like, oh, he's actually quite sweet. Someone asked,
- 22:51Speaker 1: how did Archie go meeting Luca for the first time?
- 22:54Speaker 1: We were so nervous about that because Archie has been
- 22:56Speaker 1: literally the center of our universe for five years. He
- 22:59Speaker 1: knows that he's been number one. And we were nervous
- 23:02Speaker 1: how he'd go because, I mean, obviously he's had a
- 23:04Speaker 1: bit to do with Jack and Harry, but you never
- 23:06Speaker 1: know in their own environment how they're going to be.
- 23:08Speaker 1: So we were really careful when introducing him. So the
- 23:11Speaker 1: first night we came home, we actually had him stay
- 23:14Speaker 1: at my mother and father-in-law's place. And then the next day,
- 23:19Speaker 1: we didn't want him returning to just the three of
- 23:22Speaker 1: us being there and him feeling like he was coming
- 23:24Speaker 1: into a situation he wasn't aware of. So basically, Brandon
- 23:28Speaker 1: and I left the house with the pram. We then
- 23:31Speaker 1: got my mother-in-law and sister-in-law to bring Archie in. Then
- 23:35Speaker 1: one by one, I came in to see him, made
- 23:37Speaker 1: a fuss of him, went out. Then Brandon came in,
- 23:39Speaker 1: made a fuss of him, and then we brought Luca in.
- 23:42Speaker 1: And I think that was probably the best way to
- 23:43Speaker 1: go about it because he has exceeded our expectations. He
- 23:46Speaker 1: has been incredible. He has been the sweetest, most gentle
- 23:51Speaker 1: person Big brother. He's so protective over him. He's been like,
- 23:55Speaker 1: we were saying the other day, we just can't believe
- 23:57Speaker 1: how good he's been. Brandon is sleeping with him on
- 24:00Speaker 1: a lead though. What? So I said to Brandon, we
- 24:02Speaker 1: don't need to do that anymore. But he's basically poor
- 24:05Speaker 1: Archie sleeps with his harness on. In the bedroom and
- 24:08Speaker 1: Brandon has his lead around his arm. So in case he–
- 24:11Speaker 1: because the whole night. Yeah, the whole night. I think
- 24:13Speaker 1: we need to stop it now because I think he's gone.
- 24:16Speaker 2: But I think that's quite safe though because you're sleeping
- 24:18Speaker 2: with the bassinet right near your bed.
- 24:20Speaker 1: I think Brandon's fear is what if Archie decided that
- 24:23Speaker 1: he wanted to sit in the bassinet with him and
- 24:25Speaker 1: sit on him.
- 24:26Speaker 2: Yeah, that's my fear with my cats. I don't let
- 24:28Speaker 2: them stay in our room at night time because I'm
- 24:30Speaker 2: so scared of one of them just sitting on Harry's face.
- 24:32Speaker 1: You've got to be careful. See, my golden retrievers, they
- 24:35Speaker 1: sleep on the bed and they were just not interested
- 24:37Speaker 1: in Jack and his bassinet at all. Like, The thing
- 24:40Speaker 1: is I probably wouldn't have even been able to jump
- 24:42Speaker 1: into that.
- 24:43Speaker 2: But accidents can happen.
- 24:44Speaker 1: Yeah, you have to be so careful. I don't know
- 24:46Speaker 1: how I'd go sleeping with a lead on my wrist
- 24:48Speaker 1: the whole time. I suppose you're not getting much sleep. Well,
- 24:50Speaker 1: it's not me. Brandon's like, no, I just feel safer
- 24:53Speaker 1: doing it. So I'm like, okay, whatever. Poor Archie.
- 24:56Speaker 2: How much sleep are you getting?
- 24:58Speaker 1: It's hard because we've been trying to make the feeds fun.
- 25:00Speaker 1: We're in that stupid position where we're still doing the
- 25:02Speaker 1: feeds together. You guys have told me we need to
- 25:04Speaker 1: split them up. So because it's every three to four hours,
- 25:08Speaker 1: we don't have a consistent set time. It sort of
- 25:11Speaker 1: changes each day. So you don't, you know what I mean?
- 25:12Speaker 1: Like it's not every night at 2 a.m. It could
- 25:15Speaker 1: be 3 a.m.
- 25:15Speaker 2: Or whatever.
- 25:16Speaker 1: But yeah, it's been interesting. We are doing Dr. Goalie
- 25:20Speaker 1: at the moment because- I mean, it works so well
- 25:23Speaker 1: for you, Kate. It's been working really well for you, Amy. Well,
- 25:25Speaker 1: when you say you're doing Dr. Gollick, because people think, oh,
- 25:27Speaker 1: it's just this sleep training. It's actually not. It's a
- 25:30Speaker 1: program based around making sure the baby is burped properly. Oh,
- 25:34Speaker 1: the burping. The wind thing is Dr. Gollick. I think
- 25:36Speaker 1: I've fallen in love with Dr. Gollick. Oh, what a guy.
- 25:38Speaker 1: Because you watch his videos and as someone who's sleep
- 25:42Speaker 1: deprived and you just want to do the right thing
- 25:44Speaker 1: for your baby, you're like, Tell me everything. And he
- 25:47Speaker 1: speaks with such a calm voice.
- 25:48Speaker 2: You're like, he'll sort it out for me. Are you
- 25:50Speaker 2: up to the bit where it's like, by this stage,
- 25:52Speaker 2: the adrenaline is running.
- 25:55Speaker 1: It's true. Yeah, it's true. Well, I was getting super
- 25:57Speaker 1: excited because Luca's five weeks tomorrow. And I was like,
- 26:00Speaker 1: by week six, you're supposed to see if they can
- 26:03Speaker 1: sleep through the night. But unfortunately, because he is on
- 26:06Speaker 1: the lighter side of things, We are nowhere near him
- 26:08Speaker 1: being five kilos.
- 26:10Speaker 2: When you say sleep through the night, it's from about
- 26:12Speaker 2: 11 o'clock till 6am.
- 26:14Speaker 1: Yes. But that, yeah, that would be like insane at
- 26:17Speaker 1: the moment. That just sounds so lovely. Now, Sophie, we
- 26:20Speaker 1: were expecting Luca to come out looking exactly like Brandon
- 26:24Speaker 1: because Amy and I essentially birthed our husbands, even though Amy,
- 26:27Speaker 1: you're going to argue with me, but.
- 26:29Speaker 2: All of Dale's family said he looks like me.
- 26:31Speaker 1: Well, I'm sorry. He is Dale. He is Dale. He
- 26:33Speaker 1: was a mini Dale. We discussed that on your birth episode.
- 26:35Speaker 1: Who did Luca come out looking like? I was shocked
- 26:38Speaker 1: because I really can see me as a baby in him.
- 26:42Speaker 1: I feel like it's me as a baby, but with
- 26:44Speaker 1: my husband's eyes. It's really weird though. I don't know
- 26:46Speaker 1: if it's just because Luca has been wearing some of
- 26:48Speaker 1: Jack's hand-me-downs, but I feel like they kind of look similar,
- 26:51Speaker 1: which is weird because everyone said that Jack looks exactly
- 26:54Speaker 1: like Reese as a baby. I also think that Jack
- 26:56Speaker 1: looked like you as well. So I've... It's actually interesting
- 27:00Speaker 1: you say that, Kate, because Luca pulls this expression that
- 27:03Speaker 1: actually reminds me of you as a baby, something to
- 27:04Speaker 1: do with his eyebrows, like this sort of. When I
- 27:08Speaker 1: was holding Luca before during the recording, I could just
- 27:10Speaker 1: see a mini Brandon and I've never seen it before.
- 27:13Speaker 1: It's so funny, different parts of him. Yeah, different angles.
- 27:15Speaker 1: I can also see our Papa Jeff in him. There's
- 27:17Speaker 1: this little expression he pulls with his mouth. Oh, that
- 27:20Speaker 1: was so nice to see that. It's funny because when
- 27:22Speaker 1: Luca was first born, we all thought he had really
- 27:24Speaker 1: curly hair, but it was just the way that the
- 27:26Speaker 1: blood was still stuck. Well, it was because, yeah, they
- 27:29Speaker 1: use forceps. So I think he had a bit of
- 27:31Speaker 1: like red around and it was doing something to his hair. But, yeah,
- 27:35Speaker 1: I think he's a nice mix of both of us,
- 27:37Speaker 1: which I was hoping. Now to wrap things up, Soph,
- 27:40Speaker 1: because it is nearing Luca's feed time, what type of
- 27:43Speaker 1: mum do you think you'll be? Yeah, it's funny because
- 27:47Speaker 1: when you had Jack a year ago, I was like, oh,
- 27:49Speaker 1: she's been so over the top with this Dr. Carly,
- 27:51Speaker 1: like I'm not going to be doing that, whatever. But
- 27:53Speaker 1: as soon as you have them, You're like, oh, my God,
- 27:55Speaker 1: I want the best for them. I want them to
- 27:56Speaker 1: be sleeping. You will study anything to make sure that
- 27:59Speaker 1: also you're getting your sleep. So I think that if
- 28:02Speaker 1: the past five weeks are anything to go by, I'm
- 28:04Speaker 1: going to be that overprotective mum. Helicopter mum. The helicopter
- 28:07Speaker 1: mum that's very– well, I don't want to say strict,
- 28:11Speaker 1: but I just– I really think that you realise the
- 28:13Speaker 1: importance of a routine and how much children thrive off
- 28:17Speaker 1: a routine. Again, I'm going from someone who knew nothing
- 28:21Speaker 1: about children to to now just obsessively looking up Dr.
- 28:24Speaker 1: Golley's content. My whole algorithm is now mothering content, just tips.
- 28:29Speaker 1: Mum talk. Mum talk. Again, you don't know how– take
- 28:31Speaker 1: some of it with a grain of salt because, you know,
- 28:34Speaker 1: it's not particularly expert advice. How good is TikTok though?
- 28:36Speaker 1: It just makes you feel so seen, particularly I think
- 28:38Speaker 1: the first couple of weeks of parenthood are just so lonely.
- 28:42Speaker 1: Even though your partner's at home, there is a real–
- 28:45Speaker 1: sense of responsibility when you're the parent that feeds the
- 28:49Speaker 1: baby is this weird thing because you've carried them for
- 28:53Speaker 1: nine months you're like oh like i'm used to providing
- 28:56Speaker 1: them with what they need you know what i mean
- 28:58Speaker 1: like and i think because i think because i've been
- 29:00Speaker 1: very aware that brown is going to be going back
- 29:02Speaker 1: to work i'm like i need to be okay to
- 29:04Speaker 1: do this on my own i have one more question
- 29:06Speaker 1: sophie we had a lot of arguments on the podcast
- 29:09Speaker 1: about me saying just you wait Was I valid in
- 29:13Speaker 1: saying that? Look, I still don't think it's a helpful
- 29:15Speaker 1: thing to say to people when they're pregnant because pregnancy
- 29:17Speaker 1: is tough and it's one of those, the hardest things
- 29:21Speaker 1: you're going to do as well. But yeah, I mean, again,
- 29:23Speaker 1: I have messaged you being like, I feel really bad
- 29:27Speaker 1: for you last year going through what you did because
- 29:29Speaker 1: we didn't really have many friends who had gone through
- 29:31Speaker 1: it before. And I think for me, Saving Grace has
- 29:33Speaker 1: been able to pick up the phone and say to
- 29:35Speaker 1: you guys, is this normal? Like, is this, what should
- 29:38Speaker 1: I do? And the fact that you were able to
- 29:39Speaker 1: navigate it yourself I think that was very like amazing
- 29:42Speaker 1: what you've done thank you I know it was a
- 29:45Speaker 1: it was a nice moment when we came over and
- 29:47Speaker 1: you're like I'm sorry, I just didn't know. And I
- 29:49Speaker 1: was like, it's just, it's completely fine.
- 29:51Speaker 2: Because how are you expected to know though when you.
- 29:55Speaker 1: Haven't gone through it? Yeah, that's the thing because I
- 29:57Speaker 1: think that if you haven't been through it and you
- 29:59Speaker 1: just don't fully get.
- 30:01Speaker 2: It, I saw there was a TikTok and it said,
- 30:03Speaker 2: once you have a baby, you go on an apology
- 30:05Speaker 2: tour to all the other mums. Like, sorry, I just
- 30:07Speaker 2: didn't understand that that's what you're going through.
- 30:09Speaker 1: Yeah, that's so true because even with you guys, I mean,
- 30:12Speaker 1: I specifically told you, please don't make me a meal
- 30:14Speaker 1: because I'm weird. I don't like eating people's food, like
- 30:17Speaker 1: particularly leftovers. And I mean, you guys might not have
- 30:19Speaker 1: liked the meal I prepared for you, but I'm like,
- 30:21Speaker 1: I'm bringing them a meal. I'm going to force them
- 30:22Speaker 1: to eat it. What's been really sweet is seeing all
- 30:24Speaker 1: of the mums in my life come out of the
- 30:26Speaker 1: woodwork and being like, do you need a hand? How
- 30:29Speaker 1: are you going? And that's even when you weren't there
- 30:31Speaker 1: for them. Yeah, because I feel like a dick now.
- 30:33Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, God, I didn't message them saying how
- 30:34Speaker 1: they were going. But because they've been through it, I
- 30:37Speaker 1: think that they understand just how lonely and isolating the
- 30:40Speaker 1: first few weeks can be and how difficult it is
- 30:42Speaker 1: being in the trenches of it all. And it's this
- 30:44Speaker 1: thing where for me when I've had friends that have
- 30:46Speaker 1: had babies, I'm like, I'm just going to leave them
- 30:48Speaker 1: alone because they're dealing with a lot and they probably
- 30:50Speaker 1: don't need me messaging them. But it's the complete opposite
- 30:53Speaker 1: after going through it. Like you want to be messaged.
- 30:54Speaker 1: You want people to check in and ask how you're
- 30:56Speaker 1: going because you feel like– you're losing, you feel like
- 31:00Speaker 1: you're losing friendships. Well, you feel like you're losing your
- 31:02Speaker 1: identity because you're not at work doing what you enjoy doing.
- 31:05Speaker 1: It's been actually so nice sitting down having this conversation
- 31:07Speaker 1: with you guys on the mics. I'm dying to come
- 31:10Speaker 1: back to the podcast. I feel like I might make
- 31:12Speaker 1: an earlier return. We'll see how we go. We have
- 31:14Speaker 1: been telling you to calm your engines, just try and relax. But,
- 31:17Speaker 1: I mean, it would be great.
- 31:17Speaker 2: I think first have your week by yourself, I think,
- 31:21Speaker 2: is my advice. Because you might not want to come
- 31:23Speaker 2: back right away.
- 31:24Speaker 1: But, Amy, you were saying this.
- 31:25Speaker 2: No, but also I'm at a stage where Harry is
- 31:29Speaker 2: sleeping a lot longer than Luca is at the moment.
- 31:31Speaker 2: So I couldn't imagine having to go back and record
- 31:33Speaker 2: and do all this stuff on, what, three hours of sleep.
- 31:36Speaker 1: But you– you need something I think for you to
- 31:39Speaker 1: focus on and that's why I've loved like throughout my
- 31:43Speaker 1: motherhood journey having the podcast because it's like it's something
- 31:46Speaker 1: for me that's like I could just go and do.
- 31:48Speaker 1: Like it gives you a purpose outside. I have been
- 31:51Speaker 1: keeping across all of the episodes. I know when you're
- 31:54Speaker 1: on leave, Kate, I don't think you listen to all
- 31:55Speaker 1: of them. I don't think Amy listens. I've been tuning
- 31:57Speaker 1: in to every single episode because it's such a nice distraction.
- 31:59Speaker 1: The influencer world is just one of those places it's
- 32:02Speaker 1: nice to go into and have a bit of a laugh.
- 32:04Speaker 2: I love that I messaged you the other day, Soph,
- 32:06Speaker 2: that Saffron Barker had a new video up and you're like,
- 32:09Speaker 2: this has made my night. It has.
- 32:11Speaker 1: I actually have not watched it yet because Brandon kept saying,
- 32:14Speaker 1: do you want to put it on when we do
- 32:15Speaker 1: a feed? I'm like, no, I'm going to enjoy it.
- 32:16Speaker 1: I'm going to have my dinner in front of it. Yeah,
- 32:18Speaker 1: make it a show. Are you spewing that the weekend,
- 32:22Speaker 1: I think it was the following week after you went
- 32:24Speaker 1: on maternity leave, that Tammy Hembrough announced she was divorcing
- 32:27Speaker 1: Matt Zukowski?
- 32:27Speaker 2: Yes.
- 32:28Speaker 1: Yes, because I listened to the episode. There were so
- 32:30Speaker 1: many things I wanted to add in. I thoroughly enjoyed
- 32:33Speaker 1: the episode, but I was like, I just wanted to
- 32:35Speaker 1: have my say on it. I'm so invested in that. Well,
- 32:38Speaker 1: you know, the whole thing. Now, Sophie, it's clear that
- 32:41Speaker 1: outspoken listeners may be hearing from you sooner rather than
- 32:43Speaker 1: later because you are raring to come back. But for now,
- 32:47Speaker 1: thank you so much for joining us for this episode.
- 32:49Speaker 1: It was so great to have a chat with you
- 32:50Speaker 1: because I feel like with all the distractions of, you know,
- 32:53Speaker 1: Harry and Jack and Luke are together, it's so chaotic
- 32:55Speaker 1: and I feel like I have missed some parts of
- 32:57Speaker 1: your story. So it was nice to actually hear it all. Yeah,
- 33:00Speaker 1: it's funny because I thought we were initially going to
- 33:02Speaker 1: record it maybe the week after I gave birth when
- 33:04Speaker 1: it was all fresh. I feel like there's probably details
- 33:06Speaker 1: I've forgotten. Not everyone needs to know all the gory details,
- 33:09Speaker 1: but it has been fun reliving it maybe with a
- 33:11Speaker 1: bit of space. Well, that's where we're going to leave
- 33:13Speaker 1: things because listeners may be able to hear Luke waking
- 33:15Speaker 1: up This podcast was recorded on the traditional land of
- 33:18Speaker 1: the Kaurna people of the Adelaide Plains. We pay respect
- 33:21Speaker 1: to elders past and present. And if you do love
- 33:23Speaker 1: the show, we would really appreciate it if you could
- 33:25Speaker 1: leave us a five-star review.
