- 1:09are chiefs of Brady. Thank you, Peter.
- 1:12Thank you everybody. I'm Vanessa and I'm alcoholic
- 1:15but and thank you to the group for inviting me to speak
- 1:19tonight. It's not something that I always
- 1:23feel very comfortable doing, but I was always told in the
- 1:26beginning not to say no to people who asked you to do
- 1:32things in a a. So you know, I sit here and
- 1:36probably be a bit nervous for a while, but hopefully I'll settle
- 1:39down. The nerves will settle, You
- 1:42know, I, the journey started for me in Gulwa, not Gulwa.
- 1:49People often say, are you from Gulwa?
- 1:51No, I'm from Gulwa, you know, and it happened a fair few years
- 1:56ago. And for me, I ended up on my
- 2:05knees, you know, to a God that I had no idea about.
- 2:12But what happened for me is I everything was removed.
- 2:18My family was removed, my husband was removed, the house,
- 2:24the cars, everything had been removed.
- 2:27You know, and I'd ended up that weekend on a Saturday night,
- 2:31absolutely blind drunk again and just in tears.
- 2:39And just, I just asked God to help me because there was no one
- 2:43else there to help me. And I was just desperate.
- 2:46And, and now I know what that is, you know, that gift of
- 2:51desperation because I had nowhere to turn.
- 2:56And I grew up in Sydney with a quite a dysfunctional family.
- 3:03And my father was a chronic alcoholic.
- 3:09So he would disappear for weeks on end to drink.
- 3:15And he would. I actually didn't know who he
- 3:19was because he'd left when I was 3.
- 3:24But through my journey, I actually blamed him for a lot of
- 3:27my life, you know, like, if my father was there and, you know,
- 3:30if he was a better father and he was an alcoholic, I'd, you know,
- 3:33be a better person. But it was not his fault.
- 3:38And you know, and then my mum remarried another alcoholic who
- 3:46I would call the functioning 1. He, he went to work every day,
- 3:52he provided for us. There was four other siblings at
- 3:58the time. And then my baby sister came
- 4:00along. But, you know, that was a very
- 4:06unpredictable household. And I won't go into that story
- 4:10about it, but yeah, it wasn't very pleasant.
- 4:15It was very aggressive. And and, you know, he, he drink
- 4:20to a point and then come out sort of screaming and carrying
- 4:24on. But, you know, for me, I spent
- 4:26many, many years not not wanting to be an alcoholic.
- 4:29And you know, and, and what I, what I thought in my delusion
- 4:38that alcoholism was daily drinking.
- 4:42And for me, that's how I, I, I understood it.
- 4:48But what happened for me? So I, I've been drank for many,
- 4:53many, many years. And because then what I know now
- 5:01is I put that alcohol in and I'm compelled to keep going.
- 5:07I have no stop button. I have no pause.
- 5:10I have no rationale when I drink.
- 5:13So I just, you know, I take off. But I didn't understand that for
- 5:19a long time, you know, so I would never, I never thought I
- 5:23had an alcoholic problem. I knew that it got me into
- 5:27trouble at a lot of times. I could go into the drunk logs,
- 5:33but I think we've all had those and lots of stuff I'm not proud
- 5:39of as a woman, you know, to, to have done those things.
- 5:43But for me, I understand the progression of alcoholism now.
- 5:49You know, I didn't understand that progression in the
- 5:52beginning. And I ended up, so I was 39
- 5:58years of age, on my knees begging for God to help me.
- 6:04I believe that night, which I didn't understand at the time,
- 6:09that that compulsionate drink was removed.
- 6:12And I don't know how because I'd tried so many times before.
- 6:16And I just, and especially in the end, because I was daily
- 6:20drinking, I was just daily drinking cask wine out of the
- 6:23fridge, just unmanageable. And yeah, I just didn't
- 6:29understand. So I believe at that point, that
- 6:34was my first spiritual experience.
- 6:38And I still feel that today. It still gives me goosebumps
- 6:42because yeah, like I said, I couldn't not drink, couldn't not
- 6:48not drink. But I hung on.
- 6:53So I didn't know about AI then, which is really bizarre.
- 6:57And I think that's, for me, it'd have to happen that way.
- 7:00Everything had to be stripped away, you know, including
- 7:04myself, you know, because I had that quite, you know, ego and
- 7:09stuff like that because, you know, I can do this.
- 7:11And, you know, I was quite successful at jobs and
- 7:15everything as well. You know, I'd held down jobs,
- 7:17but by the end there was no success in what I was doing.
- 7:21And, and unfortunately I was married and, and yeah, and had
- 7:25kids at the time. And the exact same thing was
- 7:29happening that my father did, the idol was doing.
- 7:31And I thought I actually willed myself to that, you know, but
- 7:37little did I know, you know, and understand alcoholism.
- 7:40I had to come to AI to understand what alcoholism was.
- 7:43And even though I'd been brought up in that environment, but
- 7:49yeah, I, I, I read the paper so, and I don't do that.
- 7:59I'd read the local community paper and there was an ad in the
- 8:04community ad and it, and it talked about an IA meeting.
- 8:09And I don't know why I was drawn to that, but I know now and I
- 8:14feel again, that was another experience again, you know,
- 8:17spiritually and, and that higher power and that pool to get me
- 8:21into the rooms. And so I, I looked at that ad
- 8:26and I waited and I waited because I was so scared, you
- 8:31know, I, I, in the end, it was 4 weeks had passed.
- 8:36I was hanging on for grim death. I was going to pick up another
- 8:40drink and I was talking to my slut.
- 8:45My head was just getting a whole lot worse.
- 8:47It was getting a whole lot racy. A lot of the stuff was, you
- 8:52know, coming to light. So all the fear was bubbling up.
- 8:56And yeah, and I read that ad and and I decide so.
- 9:01But each Tuesday, it was on a Tuesday night.
- 9:03So each Tuesday would come round and I would just oh, and make
- 9:09some excuse not to go. And until, you know, that that
- 9:16two months had passed and I was and I had and I was going to
- 9:20pick up another drink, you know, I was going to go to that drive
- 9:23through again. I was going to go and get that
- 9:25cask of wine. And I just didn't want to, you
- 9:29know, I had enough past history. I just didn't want to do that
- 9:38again, you know, and get on that merry go round.
- 9:40So I sat in the car park at Kahoora and I and I cried and I
- 9:47asked for the strength to go in because I wasn't going to go in
- 9:51either. And yeah, and I, and I did, you
- 9:57know, I found that courage. And I think that's why I always
- 10:00say to the newcomer that walks in the door, you've, you know,
- 10:03it's taken you a lot of courage to just walk through that door.
- 10:06And it still makes me quiver because it is it's it's
- 10:13powerful, but it's fearful. You know, I was so scared
- 10:18because I never live without a substance and there's other
- 10:22outside issues that I have problems with as well.
- 10:26And I was never, I was never completely sober.
- 10:31Yeah. So I walked in the doors of
- 10:34Alcoholics Anonymous and I sat down next to this gentleman who
- 10:39is still my very good friend today.
- 10:41And, you know, he went through the whole process of what
- 10:46happens and, you know, and I didn't really, nothing really
- 10:51sunk in because I was so scared. And, yeah, but he, you know, I
- 10:56knew I was in the right place when I just listened to some of
- 10:59those women, Cher. And those people just opened up
- 11:04and was honest because I had. I'd stop being honest, you know,
- 11:10I was just a lie and a cheat and all.
- 11:13I just. Yeah, or so self centred, but
- 11:18yeah, I sat, I sat down and I got identification.
- 11:22I didn't know what I didn't know that that was what it was called
- 11:24in the beginning. But yeah, they told me to keep
- 11:29coming back. And, and I say that to people
- 11:34today because I didn't want to come back.
- 11:39It got worse for me, you know, because I'd lost my kids.
- 11:45I was going through court trying to get visitation and and all
- 11:52that stuff that comes with it. And yeah, it was just so
- 11:58painful, you know, And but they just kept saying keep coming
- 12:02back, it's going to get better, you know, wait for that miracle.
- 12:08And I waited years to even feel that miracle, you know, But in
- 12:14the end, it came, you know, and it's just that persistence of
- 12:20keep coming back, you know, things are going to change.
- 12:25Put that action in, you know, And sometimes it was just for
- 12:30me, it was just to go to sleep, you know, say a prayer to
- 12:34someone. God, I didn't understand, you
- 12:37know, and, and just ask for his help.
- 12:41Yeah. And, and it took, took I cried
- 12:44for two years straight, I reckon, which is probably even a
- 12:47bit longer in every meeting. And I still cry because I, I am
- 12:54very emotional. This stuff makes me really
- 12:56emotional. And they say, you know, don't
- 13:00resent the past and I don't resent the past.
- 13:02There is, I've, I regret some of it, of course, but I don't live
- 13:07in in that uneasiness of the past, you know, because what
- 13:13I've done is I've rebuilt Vanessa to a point that I
- 13:20actually love her. And I can say that today because
- 13:26I didn't love her in the beginning.
- 13:29She done a lot of harm to people.
- 13:31So, you know, for me, you know, I'd lost my kids and I actually,
- 13:39my daughter didn't speak to me for a long, long time, you know,
- 13:42and I would always sit in these meetings and, and they'd say,
- 13:45oh, yeah, it's going to get better.
- 13:47And I'm saying when, when, when, when.
- 13:54But unfortunately, it's not in my time.
- 13:57You know, I had to grow and learn and fail and, you know,
- 14:02cry and laugh and, you know, just people loved me until I
- 14:09could love myself. And that's pretty much all it
- 14:12was until I could actually look myself in the mirror and be
- 14:18grateful. And I'm sober just today.
- 14:24My kids are extremely proud of me now.
- 14:28You know, I have built those relationships back and that took
- 14:33me a well, took me and my daughter a long, long time.
- 14:37She hated me. But they just told me just to
- 14:43keep loving her and and just accept what's going to happen.
- 14:47You may not get her back. No, you may not have those
- 14:50relationships. But yeah, I hung in there for a
- 14:55long time and yeah, and I and I had to get well, you know, and
- 14:59getting well for me is obviously the main crux of it is the
- 15:04spiritual side of it, you know, because I can't do this with
- 15:09just me, you know, I have to have a pal that's greater than
- 15:14me to lead me in the right action and the right thinking
- 15:20because my thinking on my own is completely off kilter.
- 15:26I think I, I did joke about it with Arthur.
- 15:29I don't tell people what goes on in my head because they think I
- 15:33was nuts, you know? So I do have to do that
- 15:37meditation and that quieting of the mind because mine races, it
- 15:44races a lot. People look at me and go, oh,
- 15:46you're so calm and I'll go, thank you.
- 15:50You know, at least I look calm because on the inside I'm not
- 15:53feeling calm. But you know, over time that has
- 15:59got a whole lot better, you know, and it is only the tools
- 16:04and the action that I've learnt in these rooms that have got me
- 16:09to the place I am today. And, you know, I'm just sober
- 16:13today, you know, and it talked about it in in that on page 85,
- 16:18you know, you know, it's contingent on my spiritual
- 16:21condition because that is that that is for me.
- 16:26That is the power, you know, I have to work.
- 16:32And that spiritual stuff progressed over time.
- 16:35Like that did not happen in the beginning, you know, it was a
- 16:38progression for me, you know, I had to learn how to, you know,
- 16:44to, you know, to hand it over to God and you know, he'll take
- 16:47care of me because I never trusted anybody or anything, you
- 16:50know, things. So, you know, I had to put that
- 16:53trust in someone. And that trust for me is, is me
- 16:56is my higher power. And you know, he has got me
- 16:58sitting on this seat today and I'll give him all the glory.
- 17:05And for me, it's spiritual, you know, and I have to work on that
- 17:09spiritual within me, you know, it's not people and places and
- 17:16stuff and material things, because for me that all comes
- 17:19back. It, it, it's actually knowing
- 17:23who I am, you know, and, and what I can give to other people.
- 17:27Because, you know, I was this selfish self centred person who
- 17:32thought she she was doing the right.
- 17:35Like my ego was telling me that I was the greatest mother and on
- 17:38the planet, But in all reality, I am not, you know, and I'm only
- 17:43that better mother, you know, because I've, I've learnt in
- 17:47here of how to have love and patience and compassion and
- 17:51tolerance and, and all that stuff.
- 17:54You know, my kids are addicts. So as a sober mum, an addict
- 18:03herself, you know, to bring, to have to look at your kids in
- 18:09that, in that way and know there's another way for them.
- 18:15But actually taking my hands off and allowing them to have their
- 18:19own journey is the to me is the hardest thing I've ever, ever
- 18:23had to do. Because I just want to grab them
- 18:27by the neck and try and control everything and say, look, this
- 18:31is how it all happens. This is, you know, point to the
- 18:34book in there, but you can't, you actually have to feel this
- 18:38stuff. You have to make these choices
- 18:40yourself because it's difficult and it's tough.
- 18:44And for me it was it was the hardest and toughest thing I
- 18:50would ever have to do. And I'll continue to do, you
- 18:54know, on a daily basis because I don't, I don't do this perfect,
- 18:59you know, and I and I asked my power to actually guide me into
- 19:03it and, and to allow me, you know, to be, you know, more
- 19:08perfect in his eyes. But, you know, I'm not, I'm
- 19:11human. And I have got a lot of learning
- 19:15to do because I keep having to learn and I keep having to rote
- 19:19learn for me, because a lot I have a little bit of short term
- 19:22damage. Yeah.
- 19:24So for me, it has to be rote learning and, and, and and that
- 19:28step 11, you know, prayer and meditation to improve my
- 19:32conscious contact with God, because he is the only one that
- 19:36can lead me in the right direction.
- 19:38Because if I've got the reins, I'm going down the, the wild
- 19:42road and not, not the the good Rd. where I'm supposed to be
- 19:46heading. But you know, my family, I've,
- 19:48I've actually remarried. My family are extremely
- 19:53important to me. Not that they weren't in the in
- 19:56the in the over my years, but you know, those relationships, I
- 20:01I am grateful for those relationships now because it's
- 20:05taken me a long time to rebuild them.
- 20:08And I definitely don't want to go back to that person I was
- 20:11because, you know, yeah. And This is why I come to
- 20:19meetings as well, to re reflect on that past and not shut the
- 20:23door on it. But that person is not me today.
- 20:26The person that sits here today is, you know, is an is an honest
- 20:30person or I try to be. If I'm not, I'll reflect on my
- 20:34day and ask for the honesty to come.
- 20:38But I appreciate, thank you for listening.
- 20:40And yeah, I appreciate the the you asking me to share my story.
- 20:46Thank you. A A has more than two million
- 20:49recovering Alcoholics throughout the world.
- 20:52In Australia there are about 18,000 members.
- 20:57They're made in over 2000 local meetings spread around the
- 21:01country. Meetings range in size from a
- 21:04handful in some areas to hundreds or more in larger
- 21:09communities. And once again, if anyone you
