- 0:03Speaker 1: Hot corner segment, hot stove starts immediately.
- 0:07Speaker 2: First of all, you have to make your decisions on
- 0:09Speaker 2: player options and qualifying offers to your own free agents
- 0:13Speaker 2: by Monday.
- 0:14Speaker 1: So not much time.
- 0:16Speaker 2: And then Monday, 5 o'clock, you can open up free
- 0:20Speaker 2: agency and let it begin.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Who's going to be the first one to sign?
- 0:26Speaker 3: Who's going to be the first guy to sign?
- 0:28Speaker 1: Somebody random.
- 0:30Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 0:31Speaker 2: You think someone big is going to sign right away?
- 0:34Speaker 2: It's like a reliever that gets a little bit more.
- 0:38Speaker 2: What I've seen, AJ, is often there'll be a team
- 0:42Speaker 2: that overvalues a player versus the market, and they'll grab
- 0:46Speaker 2: them quick. They'll be like, we want this guy. We
- 0:49Speaker 2: think he's worth more than what the market says. We
- 0:51Speaker 2: don't need to squeeze him down to the last dollar
- 0:53Speaker 2: and have him receive the same 10 offers from everyone,
- 0:56Speaker 2: so we'll just give him an offer now, and then
- 0:57Speaker 2: they get it done. I mean, the famous ones like
- 0:59Speaker 2: Brett Cecil from the Cardinals, and that didn't.
- 1:01Speaker 1: Work out, but there are many like that. You guys
- 1:03Speaker 1: remember that. But there are many like that. And some work.
- 1:06Speaker 2: I mean, Alex Anthopoulos has done it sometimes to a
- 1:09Speaker 2: really high degree of success where he's just like, yeah,
- 1:11Speaker 2: I want this guy. I'm not going to make him
- 1:13Speaker 2: wait for four months and risk us losing him and
- 1:15Speaker 2: piss him off.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Let's just get him now.
- 1:16Speaker 5: Dylan Cease. Dylan Cease.
- 1:19Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:20Speaker 4: Cease was early.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Good call. He was incredible this past season too.
- 1:24Speaker 5: I say Nate Eaton gets traded. I say that's going
- 1:27Speaker 5: to be the first move of the offseason.
- 1:28Speaker 4: Boom.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Done. It happened.
- 1:30Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:31Speaker 2: Well, let me bring up some other situations then.
- 1:33Speaker 4: Shall I?
- 1:35Speaker 2: Let's start with this tweet from John Heyman. Michael King
- 1:38Speaker 2: is officially a free agent, as he deserves to be.
- 1:41Speaker 2: He had a player option, and he is going to
- 1:44Speaker 2: be one of the most sought-after players on the free
- 1:47Speaker 2: agent market.
- 1:48Speaker 1: There it is.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Yeah, he's going to get paid this time around, AJ.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Padres crafted things well for him to be able to
- 1:57Speaker 2: basically do the pillow situation for a season, but now
- 2:00Speaker 2: he hits the market.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Proving that he had a healthy year. He's a big
- 2:04Speaker 1: game pitcher, too.
- 2:06Speaker 3: Yeah, he's going to get paid. He's going to get
- 2:07Speaker 3: a bag. He deserves a bag. He's been good. He
- 2:11Speaker 3: proved he could help. He can pitch. He can pitch
- 2:13Speaker 3: in big series. He can pitch in big games. He
- 2:14Speaker 3: can be an ace. He can make a bunch of starts.
- 2:17Speaker 3: He deserves to get paid, and I'm interested to see
- 2:19Speaker 3: where he ends up. Will it be a Mets? Will
- 2:22Speaker 3: it be a Cubs? Will it be a Yankees? I
- 2:24Speaker 3: don't know about the Yankees, but will it be a Giants?
- 2:27Speaker 3: Will it be someone like that? Or will the Padres'
- 2:29Speaker 3: new owners step up to the plate and start signing.
- 2:31Speaker 5: Some guys again? I would say this is one of
- 2:35Speaker 5: the most prepared, even in minor leagues, prepared pitchers for
- 2:39Speaker 5: each one of his starts. So yes, you're getting, you're
- 2:42Speaker 5: getting a pitcher that's going to give you hopefully all
- 2:46Speaker 5: 32 of his starts as any free agent pitcher. But
- 2:50Speaker 5: to me, I think you're signing him on for whatever
- 2:53Speaker 5: you're signing over a hundred million dollars for a guy
- 2:56Speaker 5: who can lead your rotation. So I look, if I'm,
- 3:00Speaker 5: if I have like two young guys in my rotation
- 3:02Speaker 5: that I, Look for the future to be with. This
- 3:06Speaker 5: is the type of guy that I think you bring
- 3:07Speaker 5: into the fold. Pay a little bit extra, and you're
- 3:11Speaker 5: going to get every dollar worth.
- 3:13Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 3:14Speaker 2: The Padres, they got their money's worth. He cost them
- 3:16Speaker 2: $ 22 million this year. The insurance part on the player's
- 3:20Speaker 2: side was really well constructed. He signed a three-year $ 75
- 3:24Speaker 2: million contract last offseason.
- 3:27Speaker 1: It just had opt-outs after years.
- 3:30Speaker 2: One and two so that he essentially could turn it
- 3:32Speaker 2: into a one-year deal but you give yourself insurance in
- 3:34Speaker 2: case you get hurt or something happens and we'll talk
- 3:36Speaker 2: about a player who's opting in in a moment but
- 3:39Speaker 2: they constructed it for the Padres to kind of mess
- 3:41Speaker 2: with their payroll in a good way five million bucks
- 3:44Speaker 2: on the salary twelve million bucks on the bonus and
- 3:47Speaker 2: then a five million dollar buyout on his opt-out so
- 3:51Speaker 2: that's how you're able to kind of spread the money
- 3:53Speaker 2: around you're able to do a little bit of tax
- 3:55Speaker 2: manipulation there too we don't have time to get into
- 3:57Speaker 2: how all of that works right now but He would.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Have made $ 28.
- 4:01Speaker 2: Million in 2027 and $ 30 million in 2028 over.
- 4:05Speaker 1: The course of that $ 375 million.
- 4:07Speaker 2: But yeah, now you figure he's going to get $ 100- something
- 4:09Speaker 2: million based off what he just did.
- 4:13Speaker 5: And no qualifying offer on him either.
- 4:17Speaker 1: Oh, he got one already, right?
- 4:19Speaker 5: He got one already.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Yep, so he can't get one again.
- 4:23Speaker 3: That could all change, though. By the way, that could
- 4:26Speaker 3: all change.
- 4:27Speaker 4: Not if he signs before it.
- 4:29Speaker 3: No, true. But you know what I'm saying? If the
- 4:34Speaker 3: owners really don't want a salary cap, they're going to
- 4:38Speaker 3: have to give something up. And so, I mean, I
- 4:41Speaker 3: don't know. We're going to see. This is where it's
- 4:42Speaker 3: going to get wonky because what are the owners willing
- 4:45Speaker 3: to give up in order to try to get a
- 4:47Speaker 3: salary cap? Is it the qualifying offer? Is it less years?
- 4:49Speaker 3: To your free agent, there's so many questions that we're
- 4:52Speaker 3: going to have going into this offseason. That's why it's
- 4:54Speaker 3: going to be so, so crazy.
- 4:56Speaker 4: Mm-hmm.
- 4:57Speaker 2: And that's why there's going to be a lot of
- 4:59Speaker 2: activity before things change. Because even I mean, forget the
- 5:03Speaker 2: cap talk for a moment. Every CBA institutes changes. So
- 5:08Speaker 2: there will be changes to the system.
- 5:10Speaker 1: There always is. They might be more minute, but there
- 5:14Speaker 1: will be changes.
- 5:15Speaker 2: OK, next up, Jesse Rogers tweeting on AJ's favorite team,
- 5:19Speaker 2: the Cubs, and we're on their channel every day. He
- 5:21Speaker 2: said they're going to be busy on the mound. Clay
- 5:24Speaker 2: Holmes and Matthew Boyd are turning down their player options.
- 5:27Speaker 2: They'll become free agents.
- 5:28Speaker 1: That makes sense.
- 5:29Speaker 2: Shota Imanaga, Kevin Gossman and David Peterson are all free agents.
- 5:33Speaker 2: So they have to rebuild their staff. He said, guess
- 5:36Speaker 2: is that one or two of above could return. So
- 5:40Speaker 2: they have to redo their rotation this off season. And Hey,
- 5:44Speaker 2: it might not be the worst thing. This is no
- 5:45Speaker 2: knock on the current players. Cause a lot of those guys,
- 5:47Speaker 2: they had just acquired. The point was AJ that, They
- 5:51Speaker 2: had to acquire all those arms in the past year, basically, right? Holmes, Boyd, Gossman,
- 5:58Speaker 2: Imanaga's been there, Peterson, because they've had so many arm injuries.
- 6:03Speaker 3: Yeah, and the pitchers they've developed have gotten broken. You know,
- 6:09Speaker 3: Cade Horton was supposed to be a stud. He went down.
- 6:11Speaker 3: Justin Steele was supposed to be their ace. He's gone down.
- 6:15Speaker 3: But the Cubs have done a good job supplementing it,
- 6:17Speaker 3: and they've always been pretty good at it. So we'll see.
- 6:19Speaker 3: But it's crazy that it's basically a whole rotation. But
- 6:21Speaker 3: don't forget, Horton's supposed to come back. Steele's supposed to
- 6:22Speaker 3: come back. So there's two guys they have, and they
- 6:25Speaker 3: always love the other guy.
- 6:27Speaker 5: I want to call him.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Edward Cabrera.
- 6:30Speaker 3: No, yeah, they have Edward Cabrera. But the other guy
- 6:32Speaker 3: who pitches a bullpen. Oh, my gosh.
- 6:35Speaker 5: Assad.
- 6:36Speaker 6: Assad.
- 6:36Speaker 5: Assad.
- 6:37Speaker 3: They also have Assad, who at some point I think
- 6:39Speaker 3: they want to be a starter. So they have options.
- 6:42Speaker 3: You just need so much depth now in the game
- 6:43Speaker 3: today because everyone gets hurt and misses time. And basically,
- 6:47Speaker 3: most teams pitch with a six-man rotation, too. Let's not
- 6:49Speaker 3: forget about that.
- 6:51Speaker 6: Okay, Kratzy, here we are again, man. How many times
- 6:54Speaker 6: do we have to tell people to get the best
- 6:56Speaker 6: tickets in the house? Where do we got to go?
- 6:58Speaker 6: We got to go to SeatGeek. It's been worth it
- 7:01Speaker 6: so many times, so many years. The green light will
- 7:04Speaker 6: let you know when it is time to go and
- 7:06Speaker 6: the best seats available. The red will let you know
- 7:08Speaker 6: if it's not the best. Kratzy, tell them how easy
- 7:11Speaker 6: it is.
- 7:12Speaker 5: Todd, I know it's easy, but I'm looking for the
- 7:14Speaker 5: deals because that's what I do. Even so much, like
- 7:18Speaker 5: we're getting such a good deal, I want you to
- 7:20Speaker 5: come across the river and we'll go to a Sixers
- 7:22Speaker 5: game together. I don't know where to sit in the stadium,
- 7:25Speaker 5: but it'll let me know that it's a perfect view
- 7:27Speaker 5: because I'm not a big NBA fan, but I got
- 7:31Speaker 5: to go see the Sixers play with LeBron and the boys.
- 7:33Speaker 6: And of course I have a code for you all.
- 7:35Speaker 6: You can use code TERRITORY10 for 10% off your next
- 7:38Speaker 6: set of tickets at SeatGeek. That's 10% of all tickets
- 7:42Speaker 6: with promo code TERRITORY10. Make sure you click the link
- 7:45Speaker 6: in the description to download the app and have the
- 7:47Speaker 6: code automatically added to your account so you can use
- 7:50Speaker 6: it later.
- 7:51Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, that's why they made the trade for
- 7:54Speaker 5: Edward Cabrera. It didn't work out. I bet he gets
- 7:56Speaker 5: another shot again. And Steele and Horton, I'm not sure
- 8:00Speaker 5: when Horton's supposed to come back, but this was the
- 8:04Speaker 5: weakest part of the team. If you look at If
- 8:07Speaker 5: you look at where they were in rankings of defense, offense,
- 8:13Speaker 5: even the bullpen, which has been a struggle for them,
- 8:17Speaker 5: this starting rotation was 30th. I think in ERA and
- 8:22Speaker 5: maybe whatever it was, 30th, last among all teams. And
- 8:28Speaker 5: now you're losing all those guys. Normally, if you're like, okay,
- 8:31Speaker 5: we made the playoffs and we're losing four-fifths of our rotation...
- 8:36Speaker 5: We're cooked. Maybe it's a good thing. Maybe it's a
- 8:39Speaker 5: good thing that they start over. I don't think they
- 8:40Speaker 5: wanted to bring Shota back last year. They offered him
- 8:43Speaker 5: the qualifying offer and he goes, sure, I'll take it.
- 8:46Speaker 5: And they were like, okay. And they're not a cash-strapped team.
- 8:50Speaker 5: But to get the depth that AJ's talking about, they
- 8:53Speaker 5: got to go far. Some teams need like three pitchers
- 8:55Speaker 5: to get depth. They need like five. Five to be
- 8:59Speaker 5: able to have seven starters.
- 9:04Speaker 4: And one more.
- 9:05Speaker 2: Um, on the pitching front, this was what I was
- 9:07Speaker 2: alluding to earlier in this segment, Ryan Helsley ops in.
- 9:12Speaker 2: So he signed with the Orioles, right? I remember he
- 9:14Speaker 2: had a weird situation. I mean, he was one of
- 9:16Speaker 2: the best relievers in the sport really for two, three years.
- 9:19Speaker 6: Right.
- 9:20Speaker 1: And was pitching really well with St.
- 9:21Speaker 3: Louis.
- 9:22Speaker 1: It's traded to the Mets.
- 9:25Speaker 2: Stop me if you've heard this one before, but the
- 9:28Speaker 2: pitching doesn't work out for him there. He said he
- 9:30Speaker 2: was healthy this year. He was not healthy for a
- 9:33Speaker 2: good chunk of the year. This is actually one of
- 9:34Speaker 2: the easiest decisions to make. So you had a $ 14
- 9:37Speaker 2: million option. AJ, he pitched just over 15 innings this
- 9:42Speaker 2: past season. Plus you have the lockout coming up. If he,
- 9:46Speaker 2: even if he was coming off an okay year, if
- 9:48Speaker 2: you're not opting in, I mean, you could be waiting
- 9:51Speaker 2: for a long time to figure out where your home is.
- 9:54Speaker 1: So this was an easy choice.
- 9:56Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 9:56Speaker 3: This was one of the easiest ones of all time,
- 9:58Speaker 3: because like you said, he didn't pitch and when he
- 10:00Speaker 3: did pitch i mean it wasn't wasn't that great so
- 10:04Speaker 3: 14 million dollars sure i got it guaranteed if you
- 10:06Speaker 3: like where you're at sign me up coach someone pick
- 10:09Speaker 3: me to sign for 14 million dollars i'll tell i'll
- 10:12Speaker 3: pick up my own option at 14 million thank you.
- 10:14Speaker 2: Guys well the game has changed You guys held firm
- 10:20Speaker 2: on not suppressing players' salaries, and guys are reaping the
- 10:25Speaker 2: benefits of it these days. Ryan Helsley getting paid for 2027. Well,
- 10:29Speaker 2: it could be partial pay, but that's a different story
- 10:33Speaker 2: for another.
- 10:34Speaker 4: Day, kids.
- 10:36Speaker 1: Dax Kilby is one of the Yankees' top prospects.
- 10:38Speaker 4: He's out in Arizona.
- 10:39Speaker 1: He's joining us right now. Dax, great to have you
- 10:41Speaker 1: on the show, man.
- 10:42Speaker 4: How are you doing? I'm doing great. Thank you all
- 10:45Speaker 4: for having me on. thank you.
- 10:47Speaker 2: And, you know, we were just talking about Cooper Pratt
- 10:49Speaker 2: and I was excited to like his own, you know,
- 10:52Speaker 2: Homer on a social media post and all that. And
- 10:54Speaker 2: I actually brought it up somewhat on purpose because I
- 10:57Speaker 2: don't know your social media interest. You can let me know,
- 11:00Speaker 2: but I also heard that you have some old school
- 11:02Speaker 2: interests in terms of what you do off the field.
- 11:04Speaker 1: Is this true?
- 11:08Speaker 4: Yeah. I mean, I'm, I'm definitely on social media. I
- 11:11Speaker 4: wouldn't say I'm like super prevalent on the app, but, um,
- 11:16Speaker 4: definitely try to have some sort of footprint on like
- 11:19Speaker 4: Instagram or whatever.
- 11:21Speaker 1: But what do you do off the field?
- 11:22Speaker 2: So, um, that I'm leading to, like, I heard there's
- 11:24Speaker 2: a game that you play that would, you know, make
- 11:26Speaker 2: you have an old soul.
- 11:28Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 11:29Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 11:29Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 11:30Speaker 4: Um, my, my aunt and my mom and a lot
- 11:34Speaker 4: of my mom's friends are all super big on Mahjong.
- 11:39Speaker 4: So they kind of got me into it. And so that's,
- 11:41Speaker 4: that's something we all do all the time while we're
- 11:43Speaker 4: back home. Um, They'll be me and, what, probably five
- 11:50Speaker 4: to six are my mom's friends, and we're all playing Mahjong.
- 11:53Speaker 4: So it's a good time.
- 11:56Speaker 5: Have you found any 50-year-old women on your baseball teams
- 11:59Speaker 5: that also play?
- 12:01Speaker 4: No, not yet.
- 12:02Speaker 5: Not yet.
- 12:03Speaker 1: Still searching.
- 12:05Speaker 5: How about coaches? Do you get to play during the season,
- 12:09Speaker 5: or do you go back in the offseason and go,
- 12:11Speaker 5: I'm rusty, I'm rusty?
- 12:13Speaker 4: Yeah, the sets are super expensive for like a nicer one.
- 12:17Speaker 4: So I don't have a set, so I can't play
- 12:20Speaker 4: with any of my roommates or anything right now. But
- 12:22Speaker 4: maybe in the future, maybe I'll get a set and
- 12:27Speaker 4: try to teach some of my buddies.
- 12:31Speaker 3: Dax, you're a first-rounder, dude. You signed for a bunch
- 12:34Speaker 3: of money. You can afford to. You're a bonus baby.
- 12:37Speaker 3: You can afford to buy a Mahjong set for the boys.
- 12:42Speaker 3: You can afford to buy a Mahjong suit. I know,
- 12:44Speaker 3: I know. I'm assuming since you have a New Balance
- 12:48Speaker 3: jacket on, you probably have a New Balance deal too.
- 12:50Speaker 3: They could probably even supply you with the whole team
- 12:53Speaker 3: with Mahjong suits for the boys.
- 12:55Speaker 4: That would be pretty awesome. I need to get them
- 12:57Speaker 4: on that.
- 12:59Speaker 3: How long did it take you to learn? Because I
- 13:00Speaker 3: know people try to learn and they say it takes
- 13:02Speaker 3: a while. So do you sit down with your mom?
- 13:04Speaker 3: Was it Bridge or Mahjong? What was it, Bridge or Mahjong?
- 13:08Speaker 1: Mahjong, yeah.
- 13:10Speaker 4: It's probably... Handful of games, you kind of start to
- 13:13Speaker 4: get used to it. I definitely had to have, like,
- 13:16Speaker 4: my aunt is, like, the master of it. She's very
- 13:20Speaker 4: into it. So just kind of having her over my
- 13:23Speaker 4: shoulder teaching me how to play helped out a lot. But, yeah.
- 13:28Speaker 5: Because AJ knows nothing about Mahjong, is there any direct
- 13:33Speaker 5: correlation between your baseball career, like your abilities in baseball
- 13:38Speaker 5: and Mahjong?
- 13:39Speaker 1: Um....
- 13:43Speaker 4: I wouldn't say so right now. It's a, I learned
- 13:46Speaker 4: fairly recently, probably like a year ago. I think it's,
- 13:50Speaker 4: it's good to be able to do that and not
- 13:53Speaker 4: sit like how we were talking about being on Instagram
- 13:55Speaker 4: all the time. I think it's better to kind of
- 13:58Speaker 4: spend some time doing some thinking rather than just flipping
- 14:02Speaker 4: through your phone.
- 14:02Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 14:05Speaker 3: So let's, let's talk a little baseball. Let's talk a
- 14:06Speaker 3: little ball here. You're out in Arizona. You're 19 years old.
- 14:10Speaker 3: You're out there banging. in the arizona fall league what's
- 14:14Speaker 3: it like out there because are you enjoying it are
- 14:17Speaker 3: you excited to meet new friends who are your roommates
- 14:20Speaker 3: what do you guys do on you know say a
- 14:22Speaker 3: thursday night tonight like what do you guys.
- 14:24Speaker 4: Do oh i've loved it been being out here so
- 14:27Speaker 4: far the weather's been amazing especially like compared i was
- 14:31Speaker 4: in tampa like a couple weeks ago before i came
- 14:33Speaker 4: out here and uh you don't like there's not there's
- 14:38Speaker 4: not not a lot of sweating out here like tampa
- 14:40Speaker 4: is like so humid and it can be rough sometimes
- 14:43Speaker 4: but yeah i've loved it though like the competition's been
- 14:46Speaker 4: great um i'm with the two other yankees hitters out
- 14:49Speaker 4: here so core and kyle but it's it's been great
- 14:52Speaker 4: we've been we've been trying to golf um we don't
- 14:55Speaker 4: get home till pretty late on game days especially like
- 14:58Speaker 4: on these these night games but uh we've been we've
- 15:01Speaker 4: started to play a little bit of cards and stuff
- 15:03Speaker 4: so it's been it's been fun though.
- 15:07Speaker 5: We had core on yesterday or the day before And
- 15:10Speaker 5: I was like, wow, core Jackson. We asked about his
- 15:13Speaker 5: name and that, you know, how he like core Jackson
- 15:15Speaker 5: is such a big league name. And then today we
- 15:18Speaker 5: have Dex Kilby. So are you guys like, are you
- 15:21Speaker 5: guys going to continue to change your name so that
- 15:23Speaker 5: you are the biggest big league name of all time?
- 15:27Speaker 4: No, I haven't really thought about it, but yeah, I
- 15:30Speaker 4: guess we do have pretty, pretty unique, pretty cool names.
- 15:33Speaker 4: So it's pretty sweet.
- 15:35Speaker 5: What did you get? What did you do coming into
- 15:38Speaker 5: the fall league? after you have an injury, I'm assuming
- 15:41Speaker 5: this year was the first time you've ever been injured. You're,
- 15:44Speaker 5: you're a young player to this extent. What did you
- 15:48Speaker 5: do to say, okay, I've learned from this. This is
- 15:51Speaker 5: why I had the, I had the hamstring. How are
- 15:55Speaker 5: you doing? And are you able to implement that your
- 15:58Speaker 5: routine to stay healthy while playing in the fall league?
- 16:02Speaker 4: Yeah, absolutely. I had the hamstring was obviously bothering me
- 16:07Speaker 4: most of the year. So We spent a ton of time, like,
- 16:12Speaker 4: dialing in a routine, ISO holds, all sorts of stuff
- 16:14Speaker 4: like that. And I think staying on top of that
- 16:18Speaker 4: this season and both going into the future and, like,
- 16:21Speaker 4: staying on top of that routine will be super essential
- 16:23Speaker 4: to kind of keeping them healthy and strong.
- 16:28Speaker 3: Dax, you're talking about staying strong. You're making some adjustments
- 16:31Speaker 3: at the plate, right? You went from a– where'd you go?
- 16:34Speaker 3: From a wide closed stance to a narrow open one?
- 16:37Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 16:38Speaker 3: What's the advantage to going from one to the other?
- 16:41Speaker 3: Is there something you're trying specifically trying to pick out?
- 16:45Speaker 4: Yeah. The biggest thing has been, uh, we've been trying
- 16:47Speaker 4: to work on some counter rotation and kind of like
- 16:50Speaker 4: getting more into my legs and my back hip. It's,
- 16:54Speaker 4: it's helped a lot so far. I think with just like,
- 16:57Speaker 4: I used to kind of have a habit of crashing
- 16:59Speaker 4: forward and kind of, I'd be late on fastballs. I
- 17:01Speaker 4: think this has kind of helped me gain some control
- 17:05Speaker 4: and be able to like be more consistent in the
- 17:08Speaker 4: timing aspect of getting.
- 17:09Speaker 1: My swing off.
- 17:11Speaker 5: The easiest thing when you're changing your swing is, Oh,
- 17:14Speaker 5: I love it. Why do you love it? Because you're
- 17:16Speaker 5: having success. You're clearly having success. But do you, do
- 17:21Speaker 5: you measure yourself against guys that you're watching? Obviously, the
- 17:24Speaker 5: World Series is the only games that are on. Those
- 17:27Speaker 5: guys have, besides Junior Caminero, they have a different approach
- 17:30Speaker 5: than what a lot of guys in the game are teaching.
- 17:33Speaker 5: Do you measure this new success, this new stance, and
- 17:37Speaker 5: the vernacular that you want to use and go, oh, well,
- 17:41Speaker 5: Bryce Terang does that, or oh, Cooper Pratt does that,
- 17:44Speaker 5: or this guy does that when you're watching these games,
- 17:47Speaker 5: or are you still new into your new stance?
- 17:51Speaker 4: Yeah. Um, not, not necessarily. I feel like I have
- 17:56Speaker 4: just been trying to my, all my misses with like
- 18:00Speaker 4: during this past season where like I'd hit the ball
- 18:03Speaker 4: straight into the ground or hit it, like pop it
- 18:05Speaker 4: straight up, just being like super late. So I've been
- 18:08Speaker 4: trying to just really dial in like the process of
- 18:10Speaker 4: getting ready to hit. So I think it's, um, just
- 18:16Speaker 4: been focusing more on the process rather than results. Obviously
- 18:18Speaker 4: the results have been great so far, but I think
- 18:22Speaker 4: I'll kind of look more at my misses, which have
- 18:24Speaker 4: been hard hit fly balls or even like line drives.
- 18:30Speaker 3: Dax, how long does it take? How long does it
- 18:32Speaker 3: take to change your stance? Did this start in Tampa
- 18:34Speaker 3: before you got to Arizona? I'm assuming you were in
- 18:36Speaker 3: instructional league, right?
- 18:41Speaker 4: Yeah. They had me go down to Tampa for a
- 18:43Speaker 4: week for like the fall camp. And that's kind of
- 18:47Speaker 4: when they introduced it to me. So I had, a
- 18:49Speaker 4: week to kind of play around with it. So it's
- 18:52Speaker 4: a pretty quick turnaround, but I've had, had some, had
- 18:55Speaker 4: some success with it so far. And I think going
- 18:59Speaker 4: into this off season, just continuing to work on it,
- 19:01Speaker 4: I think it set me up nice for next year.
- 19:04Speaker 5: All right. You're a shortstop. How hard is it in
- 19:09Speaker 5: this day and age as a young prospect who's athletic
- 19:12Speaker 5: to say, Hey, you know what? I don't know if
- 19:14Speaker 5: I really want to play second base or third base.
- 19:16Speaker 5: Like I want to be a shortstop because when AJ
- 19:18Speaker 5: and I came up, it was like shortstops who are
- 19:21Speaker 5: going to be shortstops in the big leagues play shortstop
- 19:23Speaker 5: every day. Now in the minor leagues, guys are like,
- 19:26Speaker 5: I don't know if you've played other positions, but do
- 19:29Speaker 5: you feel like that increases your value? Or do you
- 19:31Speaker 5: feel like you're like, bro, I want to be a
- 19:34Speaker 5: shortstop in the big leagues?
- 19:36Speaker 4: Well, I mean, obviously I've, I've always played shortstop through
- 19:40Speaker 4: high school. Like I've mainly just been a short, but, um,
- 19:44Speaker 4: I've i've talked to some of the yankees guys like
- 19:46Speaker 4: i'm i'm totally open to playing some second base third
- 19:49Speaker 4: base just kind of whatever just kind of having that
- 19:52Speaker 4: versatility i think would help me a lot in the
- 19:54Speaker 4: long run especially um just trying to get up to
- 19:58Speaker 4: the big leagues i think that would be the most
- 20:00Speaker 4: beneficial thing is just having that versatility to play wherever
- 20:02Speaker 4: i'm they need me.
- 20:04Speaker 5: To i'd ask core this the other day And maybe
- 20:07Speaker 5: it's the same answer that he's going to have. But
- 20:10Speaker 5: the Home Run Derby is going to happen during the
- 20:12Speaker 5: All-Star game out in the Fall League. Who do you
- 20:15Speaker 5: want to see that you've seen other team or your
- 20:19Speaker 5: team taking BP in the Home Run Derby? And you
- 20:22Speaker 5: can't say Kyle because that's who Core said yesterday.
- 20:26Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 20:28Speaker 4: I know our teammate Jack O'Dowd is going to be
- 20:31Speaker 4: in the Home Run Derby. So I would love to
- 20:33Speaker 4: see him win it. I think that would be sweet.
- 20:37Speaker 3: Oh.
- 20:37Speaker 2: Let me jump in on this one because, yeah, I've
- 20:39Speaker 2: known Dan for years. Jack is Dan Sundin was a
- 20:42Speaker 2: longtime Rockies GM.
- 20:44Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 20:44Speaker 1: What are you seeing from Jack?
- 20:45Speaker 2: I mean, I remember Jack was trying to find his
- 20:48Speaker 2: way in the college game, get some playing time, all
- 20:50Speaker 2: of that.
- 20:50Speaker 6: Right.
- 20:51Speaker 2: I think he started at Vanderbilt and then I think
- 20:52Speaker 2: he might have transferred somewhere. But man, he is Texas. OK,
- 20:57Speaker 2: I mean, man, he is broken out now and really
- 20:59Speaker 2: found it in the minor leagues. So what have you
- 21:02Speaker 2: seen from him? Yeah, I think it's awesome for him.
- 21:05Speaker 2: I know I've been able, I've had the opportunity to
- 21:07Speaker 2: talk to.
- 21:07Speaker 4: Him and kind of get to know him a little
- 21:09Speaker 4: bit better and learn his story. And I know he
- 21:12Speaker 4: was like an indie ball, ended up signing, I think
- 21:15Speaker 4: last year with the Rockies. But I mean, he's been,
- 21:18Speaker 4: he's been one of our best hitters with the Raptors
- 21:21Speaker 4: so far this season. I mean, he's seems like every
- 21:24Speaker 4: other game he's hitting a home run. So he's, he's been,
- 21:27Speaker 4: he's impressed me a lot over this season so far.
- 21:31Speaker 2: Dax question for you and what you learn from any
- 21:35Speaker 2: big leaguers or even coaches that you come across at
- 21:37Speaker 2: a big league experience. What kind of questions do you ask?
- 21:40Speaker 2: And do you have any questions for one of our
- 21:43Speaker 2: two knucklehead catchers that played for a long time? Kratzer,
- 21:46Speaker 2: Perzynski about the game on the field, off the field,
- 21:49Speaker 2: anything else, right? Whether it's something you've asked others, what
- 21:52Speaker 2: do you got?
- 21:55Speaker 4: Not necessarily. I feel like I had the opportunity to
- 21:58Speaker 4: feel like, when Volpe was doing his rehab, I got
- 22:03Speaker 4: to do field ground balls with him. So getting to
- 22:06Speaker 4: talk with him about it, same with George, like they
- 22:08Speaker 4: were both in Tampa while I was rehabbing. So I
- 22:10Speaker 4: got the opportunity to sit and talk to them a
- 22:12Speaker 4: little bit and see how they go about fielding. So
- 22:16Speaker 4: that was, that was super awesome to have that opportunity.
- 22:19Speaker 4: As far as questions go, I don't, I don't really
- 22:23Speaker 4: have anything. I know AJ played with the Braves for
- 22:26Speaker 4: a little bit, so I got to grow up watching
- 22:28Speaker 4: him for, I think it was a couple seasons you
- 22:30Speaker 4: were there.
- 22:31Speaker 3: You were like nine. You were like nine years old.
- 22:35Speaker 4: I was little. I was little.
- 22:36Speaker 3: But you had my jersey. I know you did. I
- 22:38Speaker 3: know you had.
- 22:39Speaker 4: What number do you wear now?
- 22:41Speaker 3: What number do you wear now?
- 22:44Speaker 4: In the season this year, I wore three. But I've
- 22:47Speaker 4: always worn six. But I feel like I kind of
- 22:51Speaker 4: just get thrown a random number. So I kind of–
- 22:54Speaker 4: I don't really have a number to wear, to be honest.
- 22:56Speaker 5: Does that matter?
- 22:58Speaker 3: Three is fair.
- 22:58Speaker 4: Three is fair.
- 22:59Speaker 5: Do you need a number?
- 23:02Speaker 3: Not really.
- 23:03Speaker 4: I feel like once, especially with like the Yankees, every number,
- 23:07Speaker 4: like most people wear like one through 20 is retired.
- 23:12Speaker 4: So you kind of just get a random number and
- 23:15Speaker 4: that just kind of becomes your number.
- 23:16Speaker 5: So, uh, yeah. You know, one through 10, you're out.
- 23:21Speaker 3: Now, now, yeah, they're, they're all, they're all retired.
- 23:29Speaker 4: No.
- 23:29Speaker 1: You can wear three.
- 23:31Speaker 4: No, I'll just, you know, I'll just be a number.
- 23:37Speaker 5: Do you know Yankee history in the sense that like,
- 23:39Speaker 5: I know when you go to big league camp, Zillow
- 23:42Speaker 5: just locks you in a room for three hours every
- 23:44Speaker 5: spring training and you got to learn like how to
- 23:47Speaker 5: be a Yankee. And then you got to do it
- 23:48Speaker 5: for the next six years until you're arbitration eligible. Do
- 23:52Speaker 5: you know Yankee history being somebody from Georgia?
- 23:56Speaker 4: Um, not a lot of it. I mean, obviously I
- 23:58Speaker 4: know like the, the pretty popular info, like, but other
- 24:04Speaker 4: than that, like nothing like too deep in detail.
- 24:06Speaker 2: Uh, last one from me.
- 24:12Speaker 1: And I know we talked a lot.
- 24:13Speaker 2: We started this conversation with, with Mahjong.
- 24:16Speaker 4: What else do you like?
- 24:16Speaker 2: What else do you do off the fields? Um, you're
- 24:19Speaker 2: like movies, music, like what are you doing on an
- 24:21Speaker 2: off day? What are you doing if you're hanging out
- 24:23Speaker 2: with a teammate? Yeah, in the offseason, I golf a
- 24:27Speaker 2: good bit.
- 24:27Speaker 4: My little brother plays golf for our high school team,
- 24:30Speaker 4: or like my old high school. So I'll go golf
- 24:33Speaker 4: with him. I love fly fishing. We have a mountain
- 24:36Speaker 4: house up in North Georgia. So I'll try to get
- 24:40Speaker 4: up there a good bit this offseason and go fly
- 24:41Speaker 4: fishing for trout. Other than that, I think just being outside,
- 24:46Speaker 4: not being inside, stuck on my phone, I think is
- 24:48Speaker 4: a big priority of mine.
- 24:49Speaker 3: All right, Dex, I got to ask you, what travel
- 24:53Speaker 3: team did you play for?
- 24:55Speaker 4: I played with team elite from the time I was
- 24:57Speaker 4: like 12 to 17. Okay.
- 25:01Speaker 3: Cause my son had to have played you at some point.
- 25:03Speaker 4: Cause my son, we were at, we were on the
- 25:05Speaker 4: same East coast pro team. I guess it would have
- 25:08Speaker 4: been June. We were on the same team that season
- 25:11Speaker 4: or that for that event. So it's pretty cool.
- 25:14Speaker 1: Yeah, it was.
- 25:17Speaker 5: No.
- 25:18Speaker 3: Was he nice?
- 25:18Speaker 5: Not you.
- 25:20Speaker 4: Yeah, he was. He was nice.
- 25:23Speaker 3: That's all I care about.
- 25:24Speaker 4: He's at UAB.
- 25:26Speaker 5: Right now, right?
- 25:27Speaker 3: He's at UAB. He's doing good. He's doing really well.
- 25:31Speaker 3: That's nice. I'll have to tell him that you remembered
- 25:33Speaker 3: who he was.
- 25:34Speaker 5: I'm glad.
- 25:38Speaker 3: That was a fun time. Hottest thing I've ever been
- 25:40Speaker 3: through in my life, by the way, was Hoover in August.
- 25:43Speaker 4: I know. It's rough. We played there earlier in the
- 25:45Speaker 4: summer before that. It was terrible. I got COVID during
- 25:49Speaker 4: that tournament. I felt like I was about to die
- 25:51Speaker 4: during the– it was like a summer game. I, like, won.
- 25:55Speaker 4: It was terrible.
- 25:56Speaker 3: All right, so I know you're from Georgia. You're from Noonan, Georgia.
- 25:59Speaker 3: I know– I think you signed with Clemson at a
- 26:01Speaker 3: high school, but there's a Florida-Georgia game this weekend. So
- 26:04Speaker 3: since you don't like Georgia, tell me you're rooting for Florida.
- 26:08Speaker 4: No, I'm a– my dad went to UGA, so I
- 26:11Speaker 4: grew up with Georgia fat. Okay, interview's over.
- 26:14Speaker 3: Interview's over. Scott, cut him off. Scott, time to go.
- 26:17Speaker 2: Wait, you actually timed that perfectly. This is the end
- 26:20Speaker 2: of the interview. You're going to let them go out
- 26:22Speaker 2: that way?
- 26:23Speaker 4: Give me a prediction.
- 26:24Speaker 1: How bad are they going to beat.
- 26:29Speaker 4: Them? They're winning by three touchdowns. Blown them out. Nice blowout.
- 26:41Speaker 6: That's good.
- 26:41Speaker 4: Georgia lost to Auburn. Florida throttled Auburn.
- 26:43Speaker 3: I understand.
- 26:47Speaker 4: I did. I did. All right, good. Well, I need
- 26:50Speaker 4: a redemption week. Yes.
- 26:53Speaker 1: Redemption week.
- 26:53Speaker 2: And yeah, AJ, you can, can leave in the third
- 26:55Speaker 2: quarter if it's a three touchdown game like that.
- 26:58Speaker 4: So I never leave.
- 26:59Speaker 3: I always, I always stay in the finish line. I
- 27:02Speaker 3: enjoy the grind.
- 27:04Speaker 4: Okay.
- 27:06Speaker 5: He only, he only leaves world series games early before
- 27:09Speaker 5: the walk-off hits. That's, that's the only games he leaves early.
- 27:12Speaker 3: When I have a two and a half hour drive home.
- 27:13Speaker 5: Yes, I do. At midnight.
- 27:16Speaker 4: Oh, we'll let them bicker. Dax, you go do your thing.
- 27:18Speaker 4: Thanks for joining us, man. Hope you had fun.
- 27:21Speaker 5: Yes, sir.
- 27:21Speaker 4: Yeah. Thank you all for having me on.
