Transcript
- 0:01SPEAKER_03: Welcome back to Catching Up with Cody.
- 0:04SPEAKER_03: I'm Alex.
- 0:06SPEAKER_03: I'm John.
- 0:08SPEAKER_03: And I'm Cody.
- 0:12SPEAKER_02: So Cody.
- 0:13SPEAKER_02: What have we caught up with this week?
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: This week's movie, well, say this week, technically we're slightly out of order how I watched them, but we all watched T2 together, so we talked about it first this time.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: Watch Jaws.
- 0:31SPEAKER_04: Like the original, like from the 70s Jaws?
- 0:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 0:36SPEAKER_02: Oh shoot.
- 0:38SPEAKER_02: The one that's rated PG mysteriously.
- 0:41SPEAKER_04: Well, that was before PG-13 existed.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: And I don't even watching it, like, it doesn't really need an R rating.
- 0:51SPEAKER_04: No.
- 0:52SPEAKER_04: No, absolutely not.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: PG-13, even is like, probably, but it's not that bad.
- 1:00SPEAKER_02: No, it's not that bad.
- 1:04SPEAKER_04: It's more psychological terrifying than it is anything, in my opinion.
- 1:10SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: I think the only thing that would probably get it to PG-13 is they do show like some blood and stuff.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: So that's probably what would push it to the PG-13 as opposed to the original PG when it came out.
- 1:24SPEAKER_04: You could tell we live in a different time where you said some blood, and I just thought, well, you saw Quentin getting crushed and blood spewing out of his mouth.
- 1:33SPEAKER_04: You saw the guy on the boat get bit, and then his leg comes down, and then the gush of blood showing up.
- 1:41SPEAKER_04: You got the blood from when the kid got ate and it was just spewing out of the ocean.
- 1:46SPEAKER_04: Then you also have um the head that shows up, and then you have the blood for when the shark explodes.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: I guess there's probably more blood than I was thinking.
- 2:00SPEAKER_04: And I'm like, I'm like, that's a bloody movie.
- 2:03SPEAKER_04: It's just all in water.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think that's what like in my own mind kind of toned it down.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: It's like, well, you see it in the water, but it's not like just a bunch of blood or it's just in the water, so it kind of tones it down in a sense.
- 2:18SPEAKER_02: They also throw blood in the water.
- 2:21SPEAKER_04: Oh, yeah, the chum, yeah.
- 2:23SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 2:25SPEAKER_04: So I I just again, I just want to get this right off the bat.
- 2:29SPEAKER_04: Did you like the movie?
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: Honestly, before T2, out of the ones I've been doing for this, this probably would have been the best one I'd seen yet.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: Granted, it's still like I'd probably put it right up there with T2.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: Like, I think they're pretty even in my own, like, for stuff that I typically enjoy.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: Like, I think they were both pretty well done.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: And honestly, both of them still hold up pretty well.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: T2, obviously not as old, but like for as old as Jaws is, it still looks pretty solid.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: I mean, some of the like camera stuff, you could argue, it's like, well, yeah, all that stuff got cleaner as like technology advanced, but like as far as the effects and everything, like it still looks good.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: Like nothing on it looked like as cheesy as you would expect something from the 70s to look.
- 3:24SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 3:25SPEAKER_04: Did you know?
- 3:27SPEAKER_04: Fun fact, did you know that the shark's name is Bruce?
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: I did know that.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: I don't remember where I heard it first.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: I know they've talked about it on Mythbusters, but I don't know if that's where I first heard about it.
- 3:42SPEAKER_04: So, do you know what's funny about that shark's name being Bruce?
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: Is it that the shark in Finding Nemo is also Bruce?
- 3:52SPEAKER_04: Yes, and he is also a great white shark.
- 3:55SPEAKER_04: So that's kind of the joke that the Bruce in Finding Nemo is either named after, well, it's like named after Bruce.
- 4:05SPEAKER_04: And I think it's funny because in Fighting Nemo, he's like, Well, there's a boy looking for his father.
- 4:11SPEAKER_04: I never knew my father.
- 4:12SPEAKER_04: And to me, I'm like, oh shoot, his father's dead because his father was Bruce.
- 4:22SPEAKER_04: So it's just funny how they did all that.
- 4:25SPEAKER_02: Well, also, Bruce was almost the reason they didn't get to make the movie.
- 4:32SPEAKER_04: Uh, yes, 100%.
- 4:35SPEAKER_02: Really, what happened with that?
- 4:38SPEAKER_02: The puppet had so much trouble, and it required the puppeteers to do so much that like they almost were like, this isn't worth it.
- 4:47SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it was a machine fully engulfed in water, and it just kept breaking.
- 4:55SPEAKER_03: Fair enough then.
- 4:58SPEAKER_04: So, what Cody, what is this movie about?
- 5:02SPEAKER_04: Let's get it from the eyes of Cody.
- 5:03SPEAKER_04: What is this movie?
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: Uh short synopsis on the movie would be uh honestly, I already forgot what the main guy's name is, but is the new police chief of whatever town they're in.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: I don't think it's like first day on the job, but it still seemed like they were setting it up like he was pretty new here.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: And overnight a girl gets killed on the beach.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: We don't see what happens, but you can kind of infer from what the movie's called that she gets eaten by a shark.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: Obviously, they don't say it.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: He investigates it the next day, they kind of come to the same conclusion.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: He's fighting with the city officials because obviously the smart thing would be somebody got eaten by a shark on our beach.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: Maybe we shut down the beach.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: They tell him no, we can't do that, it's too important of a time of the year.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: So he fights with them a lot on that, and then our main like shark expert shows up, and from there they kind of go about trying to one figure out what kind of shark it is, and two, how to stop it or capture it or whatever.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: They have one guy who's kind of a shark nut in the sense that like he's kind of crazy, but like we don't really get a full backstory on why.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: So our police chief, the scientist, and the crazy guy are all out on a boat at one point.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: Finally catch Jaws or Bruce, whatever you want to call him, since he's got two different names.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: Try to reel him in using a bunch of like buoys and stuff, nothing works.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: They eventually, at this point, I'm not saying it's a spotter because the movie's been out for 50 years.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: They eventually blow up the shark, and it's just the police chief and the scientist left to get back home.
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: Because this all they blow them up out in the middle of I don't know if it's a lake, or like if it's just a like inland spot to go out to the ocean.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: I'm not really sure.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: They didn't really explain that part.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: I know it's on an island kind of thing, but they didn't really explain if they're in the ocean or if they like connect to the ocean, unless I just missed that part.
- 7:34SPEAKER_02: I'm trying, I think I want to say that it was like towards the like the ocean channel is where they were.
- 7:43SPEAKER_02: But it's been like forever since I've seen it.
- 7:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 7:47SPEAKER_04: So there is a part where they talk about the quote unquote lake.
- 7:51SPEAKER_04: So that you gotta remember, like you gotta think 1970s terminology and and east coast terminology.
- 7:58SPEAKER_04: Um the the island that it takes place on is actually in New Jersey.
- 8:04SPEAKER_04: Um when it talks about a lake, it's actually just a section of the ocean that's surrounded by like a coral reef.
- 8:13SPEAKER_04: So not a lot of sea life could actually get in or even out.
- 8:18SPEAKER_04: Which is why when Brody was talking to his kids and they were like, Hey, can I play in the water?
- 8:24SPEAKER_04: He's like, Yeah, but go to the lake because he assumed that was a safe place because of the coral reef that was surrounded by it.
- 8:32SPEAKER_04: So that's what they mean when they say lake in that movie.
- 8:34SPEAKER_04: It's still the ocean, but it's like a secluded spot in the ocean.
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: I wasn't fully sure.
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: I was like, I don't know if they explain this or if this is a context thing that I just don't know.
- 8:46SPEAKER_04: No, it's just like an old school terminology or like an East Coast beach terminology.
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: That would be things I was not aware of then.
- 8:57SPEAKER_04: Um Okay.
- 8:59SPEAKER_04: Did the movie scare you?
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: No, not really.
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: Like nothing about it really scared me that much.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: I get again for the 70s, and again, I know I said it held up, and it still looks good.
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: And I think back then maybe it would have had a bigger effect.
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: I think the problem now is probably I've seen like enough horror movies that something like this for me just was like it's kind of a whatever thing.
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: Like I've seen a lot scarier movies nowadays, but when it came out, I get especially you know, for people that are you know on like oceanfront property where like it would scare them.
- 9:43SPEAKER_04: I got you.
- 9:45SPEAKER_03: Uh Alex, did this movie scare you at all?
- 9:51SPEAKER_03: Uh I remember the first scene did.
- 9:55SPEAKER_02: Just because it was a night.
- 9:57SPEAKER_02: I think that's what made it scarier.
- 9:59SPEAKER_02: And then you had the like perfect score moment to give you the Jaws theme in the opening scene that was like dumped him, dumped him.
- 10:09SPEAKER_02: Like it just adds it to the gravity of like what we're setting in for.
- 10:14SPEAKER_02: Because I definitely remember that part.
- 10:16SPEAKER_02: But I can't think of any other movie that like fully got me from just the opening scene with the score for the entire movie right then.
- 10:29SPEAKER_02: I gotcha.
- 10:29SPEAKER_04: Hey, Cody, really quick.
- 10:31SPEAKER_04: I I sent you a message, but I'm not sure if you're on your phone.
- 10:33SPEAKER_04: I'm getting a lot of background noise on your end.
- 10:37SPEAKER_03: Is it any better?
- 10:40SPEAKER_03: Um wait a minute.
- 10:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's better.
- 10:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 10:47SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 10:48SPEAKER_04: It was just a lot, like, there was a point where it sounded like it was overdoing your audio, and I was like, I'd hate for Cody to give us a synopsis and have it be drowned out by a TV or something.
- 11:03SPEAKER_00: No, I when we first were just talking, I had the music going, I was like, well, if it's picking up, I assume John will let me know, but I guess for some reason it wasn't, and then it was.
- 11:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so now you're good.
- 11:16SPEAKER_04: Um, this movie scares me.
- 11:21SPEAKER_04: And it really yes, and I'm not gonna lie, it it kind of scares me to this day.
- 11:26SPEAKER_04: Like, I was one of the people, so it didn't scare me when I was a kid.
- 11:30SPEAKER_04: I was like five years old when I saw this movie.
- 11:33SPEAKER_04: Probably shouldn't have watched it at five years old, but I did, whatever.
- 11:37SPEAKER_04: Um it scared me at five years old.
- 11:41SPEAKER_04: I mean, it didn't scare me at five years old, it didn't scare me at 10 years old.
- 11:46SPEAKER_04: When I was like 12 or 13, was okay, I'm I'm picking up some more stuff in your background again.
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: I'm pretty sure that's my dog snoring.
- 11:56SPEAKER_04: That's hilarious, anyways.
- 11:58SPEAKER_04: Snoring dog, we could keep that in.
- 12:00SPEAKER_04: Um no, when I was like 12 or 13, was when I was finally like this movie's terrifying.
- 12:09SPEAKER_04: And I was one of those people that like couldn't go take a bath, I couldn't jump in a lake, I couldn't um freaking sometimes a pool, not gonna lie.
- 12:21SPEAKER_04: It was just terrifying the whole time when I realized like what this movie was.
- 12:27SPEAKER_04: That dog is really loud.
- 12:30SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 12:31SPEAKER_04: That's hilarious.
- 12:33SPEAKER_04: So yeah, no, this movie scared the crap out of me.
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: I mean, I I can see how I personally didn't really scare me much, but I definitely get where for a lot of people it would.
- 12:48SPEAKER_04: It was uh it was a uh I don't know if propaganda is the right word.
- 12:54SPEAKER_04: It could be, I don't know.
- 12:55SPEAKER_04: It was it was a phenomenon that happened when Jaws came out because of how many people were scared to uh just go inside any body of water after that.
- 13:07SPEAKER_04: Now, that being said, I have seen the movie pitch black at night in the middle of a lake, and for some re and like I was just in a floaty, like like you saw in the movies.
- 13:23SPEAKER_04: Like I was just in a normal round donut floaty, and I was like, Yeah, I'm gonna I'm gonna watch Jaws while doing this.
- 13:30SPEAKER_04: For some reason, that was like the one time that movie didn't scare me.
- 13:36SPEAKER_00: I would think that would be when it would scare you more.
- 13:39SPEAKER_04: That's what I thought too, and and I was really looking forward to that like rush.
- 13:44SPEAKER_04: And so what I did was like halfway through the movie, I was like, you know what?
- 13:49SPEAKER_04: I'm gonna go further in the lake, away from everybody.
- 13:54SPEAKER_04: Maybe I feel I'm too safe because I'm around a bunch of people.
- 13:56SPEAKER_04: So I went off on my own, like no one around me to watch this movie.
- 14:01SPEAKER_04: I don't know what's in this lake, and still nothing.
- 14:05SPEAKER_04: I was like, okay, well, this was really disappointing, I guess.
- 14:10SPEAKER_00: So yeah, um, that's fair.
- 14:14SPEAKER_00: I think part of it for me on not being scared might also be again.
- 14:19SPEAKER_00: I get if you grow up on either coast or like south or something where like there is that chance where it would be a lot scarier.
- 14:29SPEAKER_00: Obviously, I've been in mid-Mouri my whole life.
- 14:32SPEAKER_00: There's kind of a 0% chance that a shark shows up here.
- 14:37SPEAKER_04: Technically, there's a 1% chance that a shark shows up, but that's a completely different thing.
- 14:43SPEAKER_00: It's very minimal, so I think that might be part of why it also didn't scare me, because I'm like, well, that's not really something I have to worry about here.
- 14:52SPEAKER_04: What did you think about the characters in the movie?
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: Um I mean the main characters I was fine with the city officials were, and I get kind of what they were doing with it.
- 15:07SPEAKER_00: It was supposed to be a big I don't know if it was some like seasonal thing kicking off or it wasn't 4th of July, but there was something going on where they were making a big deal out of needing the beach to be open.
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: But part of me wanted to punch them in the face.
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: I'm like, maybe you listen to the people that know what they're doing in the fact that somebody got eaten on your beach, and maybe you close it.
- 15:32SPEAKER_00: And they're like, no, we can't do that.
- 15:34SPEAKER_00: And I was like, understand what they're doing here, kind of want to punch you in the face.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: But overall, I don't know who the main guy is.
- 15:47SPEAKER_00: Again, I probably should.
- 15:48SPEAKER_00: And if I looked it up, I'd probably be like, oh yeah, that guy right now can't tell you.
- 15:54SPEAKER_00: Brody.
- 15:54SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 15:55SPEAKER_04: Frodie or Chief, the way Quint says.
- 15:57SPEAKER_04: Hey, Chiefy.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:00SPEAKER_00: I thought he was good.
- 16:02SPEAKER_00: I mean, there were a few things.
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: I mean, if you're trying to go more realistic, like with like what a cop's doing, some of that stuff doesn't really add up.
- 16:11SPEAKER_00: But for the most part, I thought how they had that character things were fine with it.
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: I didn't see anything like as a massive issue with it.
- 16:20SPEAKER_00: I think the scientist guy was good.
- 16:22SPEAKER_00: My only complaint with him was like they were talking about we don't really know much about sharks, and I was like, I feel like in the 70s we knew some about sharks, and they're kind of acting like we know nothing.
- 16:34SPEAKER_00: But maybe I'm wrong on that because I'm not a shark person.
- 16:38SPEAKER_04: I am luckily a shark person, and I will let you know that in the 70s they knew very, very little about sharks.
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: Okay, so that was accurate.
- 16:49SPEAKER_00: That was just the thing that bugs me.
- 16:50SPEAKER_00: It was like, well, we don't really know much about sharks.
- 16:52SPEAKER_00: I was like, really?
- 16:54SPEAKER_00: Are we sure?
- 16:55SPEAKER_04: Well the stuff we know about accurate, I can't really complain.
- 16:59SPEAKER_04: The stuff that we really know about sharks, like the the heavy stuff that we know now, happened within the last 15 to 20 years.
- 17:09SPEAKER_00: Oh, well, fair enough then.
- 17:11SPEAKER_00: I guess I can't really have that as a complaint.
- 17:13SPEAKER_00: It sounds like the scientist was pretty spot on then.
- 17:17SPEAKER_04: So who was played by uh the amazing Richard Dreyfus.
- 17:22SPEAKER_00: So that's who that was.
- 17:24SPEAKER_00: It's like again, you could probably look at the actor's name and be like, yeah, that guy wouldn't have told you off the top of my head who that was.
- 17:32SPEAKER_00: It's Richard Dreyfus.
- 17:34SPEAKER_00: So about those two being the mains, did a good job.
- 17:39SPEAKER_00: I think they played their roles very well.
- 17:42SPEAKER_00: Most of them I thought did.
- 17:43SPEAKER_00: There were a few things with some of like the background characters that were annoying, but like nothing was a major complaint.
- 17:53SPEAKER_04: Now, uh either Alex or Cody, have either of you guys read the book, Jaws?
- 18:00SPEAKER_00: No.
- 18:02SPEAKER_00: I to be fair, I didn't know there was a book.
- 18:04SPEAKER_00: So is this also an adaptation?
- 18:07SPEAKER_04: This is also an adaptation.
- 18:09SPEAKER_04: Alex, have you read the book?
- 18:11SPEAKER_02: I have not read the book.
- 18:13SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 18:14SPEAKER_04: Um I will say this the opening scene of the book and of the movie are the same.
- 18:22SPEAKER_04: However, I think it is way scarier in the book because the book talks about how she felt because she was swimming near the buoy, how she felt a tug, and she thought she just caught her leg on the rope of the buoy.
- 18:36SPEAKER_04: So she reaches her hand down to untangle the rope, and it describes how she didn't feel a leg and she felt something sticking out the middle of her leg, which was like the bone, and it's describing what she's feeling and kind of processing what's actually going on, that something just ripped her leg off, and it's just to me, reading that was so much more terrifying than just watching her get drug underwater, which was also terrifying.
- 19:08SPEAKER_00: So, yeah, I would agree with you though, that would definitely be scarier, I guess.
- 19:13SPEAKER_00: And then since we did recently talk about adaptations, is this a good adaptation, or is it kind of like Jurassic Park where it's like it's a great movie, but it doesn't actually adapt to source material that well?
- 19:28SPEAKER_04: I would say this would be a 50-50.
- 19:31SPEAKER_04: I'm really glad with the changes they made in the movie versus the book.
- 19:36SPEAKER_04: Because they did keep a lot of it, like you do have more character development on all three characters.
- 19:42SPEAKER_04: However, Hooper, who is Richard Drivis's character, he's kind of a douchebag, and he actually ends up sleeping with Brody's wife in the movie.
- 19:54SPEAKER_04: I mean, in the book, yeah, and there's like tension and stuff like that happening because like she wasn't really happy that they moved to uh New Jersey, and you know, there's this not uh scientist who's super, super rich, and he shows up and starts getting involved, and then they go to like a hotel and they sleep together.
- 20:17SPEAKER_04: And if I remember correctly, they sleep together like more than once.
- 20:20SPEAKER_04: So then there's like that yeah, there's like that aspect of the book that you're just like when you watch the movie, you're like, Yeah, that really didn't need to be in there.
- 20:29SPEAKER_00: Like Yeah, I think I can agree.
- 20:31SPEAKER_00: I don't think the movie needed it.
- 20:34SPEAKER_00: I think my biggest complaint with the movie itself is technically the very end of it.
- 20:44SPEAKER_00: Which I assume you're probably confused by that.
- 20:48SPEAKER_04: Yeah, what do you mean?
- 20:50SPEAKER_01: I feel like if they made it just like five minutes longer, they could have because my main thing was like obviously they killed Bruce, but then they're just out in the middle of the ocean, this lake, whatever.
- 21:07SPEAKER_03: How the hell did they get back?
- 21:11SPEAKER_03: They they swam back on the barrels.
- 21:15SPEAKER_03: But how was that?
- 21:16SPEAKER_03: Like, we didn't see land anywhere.
- 21:19SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you do.
- 21:20SPEAKER_04: You didn't keep watching the credits, did you?
- 21:25SPEAKER_03: Did I not?
- 21:26SPEAKER_03: I thought I did.
- 21:28SPEAKER_04: So you you will you see them swimming towards shore because they were close to shore anyways.
- 21:32SPEAKER_04: Quint's plan was to bring him around the shallows and drown him.
- 21:36SPEAKER_01: That's what I thought, but like the whole time I'm like, I don't like every camera shot, I was like, I don't see land anywhere.
- 21:43SPEAKER_04: Yeah, the final shot when you see them paddling away trying to figure out what day it was, which I think was hilarious.
- 21:49SPEAKER_04: If you look in the background, you see land there, and if you keep watching the credits, uh you see them come up on shore.
- 21:57SPEAKER_00: Oh.
- 21:58SPEAKER_00: I just felt like that could have added.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: Like five more minutes to just wrap a few little things up.
- 22:04SPEAKER_00: I mean, Alex, am I wrong?
- 22:06SPEAKER_04: That's how it ends, right?
- 22:08SPEAKER_02: Dude, I'm sitting here trying to remember that part.
- 22:12SPEAKER_02: I for some reason, I think Cody's right in a lot of like in like the original.
- 22:19SPEAKER_02: I don't know if that was the ending.
- 22:22SPEAKER_04: I'll look at it.
- 22:23SPEAKER_02: Because I I remember what I remember is they laid down on that boat, they didn't do the joke about the day, and then it just continues to pan out, and you don't see them come to shore, it just pans out.
- 22:38SPEAKER_00: Unless it was something that like I just super missed.
- 22:44SPEAKER_00: Oh, so it was like they could have wrapped it up to because like they're trying to, you know, figure out what's going on with the shark and stuff, and then it just ends with it dead, and I'm like, did they ever explain what happened?
- 22:55SPEAKER_00: Dude, does anybody know?
- 22:58SPEAKER_04: Okay, so yeah, no, no, no.
- 23:00SPEAKER_04: I am remembering it correctly.
- 23:01SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so it's it's a very subtle transition, but you do see them paddling towards shore, and then the viewer can even spot them exhaustedly walking out into the water out of the water onto the beach in the background during the film's final shot and rolling credits.
- 23:19SPEAKER_04: So it's like a background thing.
- 23:22SPEAKER_00: Okay, yeah, I probably missed that part.
- 23:24SPEAKER_04: This is another one of those movies that I watch once or twice a year, like the same as Terminator.
- 23:30SPEAKER_04: So um I unfortunately I know like a lot.
- 23:35SPEAKER_04: Oh, that's another thing that's different in the in the book than the movie.
- 23:38SPEAKER_04: I'm like a hundred percent sure uh Hooper, Richard Dravis' character, gets eaten by the shark in the movie.
- 23:46SPEAKER_04: Like Brody's the only survivor.
- 23:49SPEAKER_02: You mean in the book?
- 23:50SPEAKER_04: Yeah, in the book, yeah, in the book.
- 23:53SPEAKER_02: I actually think you're right on that one, because I'm pretty sure Brody was the only one that survived in the book.
- 23:59SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 24:00SPEAKER_04: So that was another thing they changed.
- 24:03SPEAKER_00: It's not a massive thing.
- 24:04SPEAKER_00: I was just like, if they added like five minutes just to wrap up actually showing them get back and then explain what happened, would have been good.
- 24:15SPEAKER_04: You get a lot of that in the second one, to be honest.
- 24:19SPEAKER_00: Okay, that could be part of me is like though, like if they didn't know they were gonna make a second one, maybe you wrap it up.
- 24:27SPEAKER_00: But if they already knew they were gonna, then I get if they didn't, because then it's like, well, we gotta see what they tell 'em.
- 24:35SPEAKER_04: I don't think I don't think they knew.
- 24:37SPEAKER_04: I think that's just how movies ended back in the day.
- 24:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, just kind of open-ended.
- 24:43SPEAKER_00: They just didn't wrap them up as well.
- 24:46SPEAKER_00: Not saying it wasn't wrapped up for the most part.
- 24:48SPEAKER_00: There was just a few things.
- 24:50SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it was more like one of those happy ending endings.
- 24:53SPEAKER_04: So I interrupted Alex.
- 24:55SPEAKER_04: Alex, what were you gonna say?
- 24:58SPEAKER_02: I was just gonna say, like, the second one isn't very good either, though.
- 25:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, I looked at the Rotten Tomatoes for all of it, really.
- 25:09SPEAKER_00: I mean, uh obviously I was gonna look at the first one since that's what I watched.
- 25:12SPEAKER_00: Critics on that one were at a 97, and the audience was a 98, so resoundingly pretty up there.
- 25:19SPEAKER_00: Not as high as it could be, but it's damn near as high as it gets.
- 25:23SPEAKER_00: The second one drops from a 97 for critics down to a 56, and the audience drops from a 98 to a 40.
- 25:32SPEAKER_04: How dare they?
- 25:33SPEAKER_04: The second one's incredible.
- 25:34SPEAKER_02: No, it's not.
- 25:35SPEAKER_02: That's the one that's centered around the kids going out on dinghies, right?
- 25:39SPEAKER_04: Yeah, dude.
- 25:40SPEAKER_04: No, yeah, that's a great story.
- 25:43SPEAKER_02: No.
- 25:45SPEAKER_04: No, yeah, because because it's a second shark, and and everyone's like, like, once again, Brody's like, dude, there's a shark out there, and I know sharks.
- 25:55SPEAKER_02: It's the same story.
- 25:56SPEAKER_04: Just the same story, but but the kids are grown up, and yeah, it's like a bunch of teenagers stranded in sea, uh, and and it's a bigger shark.
- 26:07SPEAKER_04: And Brody's like, he has to take matters into his own hands, but he has no jurisdiction because they let him go, because they're like, you were like a hero, and now that's not a thing anymore, so you're just trying to make up stuff so that you could be a hero again.
- 26:22SPEAKER_04: So they strip him of his title, so he kind of just goes rogue and is like, I know there's a shark out there, I'm gonna go stop it.
- 26:30SPEAKER_04: And it's kind of like I didn't like it.
- 26:33SPEAKER_02: I didn't like it.
- 26:35SPEAKER_00: Especially I mean, you know, you're kind of in the boat with most of the audience considering it had a 40.
- 26:42SPEAKER_04: Cody, I'm gonna tell you one thing about the movie because this is what got me wanting to watch the movie, and I'm gonna tell you this, okay, because they obviously kill the shark in the second movie.
- 26:52SPEAKER_00: The first movie I assume they do in all of them.
- 26:55SPEAKER_04: They do.
- 26:56SPEAKER_04: In the first movie, they blow it up.
- 26:59SPEAKER_04: In the second movie, they electrocute it.
- 27:05SPEAKER_03: I don't know that I like that.
- 27:08SPEAKER_04: Well, now it's up to you to decide whether or not you want to figure out how that works.
- 27:13SPEAKER_04: And I think it's awesome.
- 27:15SPEAKER_00: That's fair.
- 27:16SPEAKER_00: I know the rest of them just keep getting worse from there.
- 27:21SPEAKER_04: John 3D.
- 27:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 27:24SPEAKER_00: As far as like critics and audience, like after that, they're not even remotely considered good.
- 27:30SPEAKER_00: Three and four.
- 27:33SPEAKER_02: Actually, never watched four.
- 27:36SPEAKER_01: Good.
- 27:36SPEAKER_01: Revenge has a critic score of two percent and an audience score of fifteen percent.
- 27:43SPEAKER_02: The last one I watched was three with the fake CG Shark in it.
- 27:48SPEAKER_04: With Dennis Quaid.
- 27:51SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 27:54SPEAKER_03: Fair enough.
- 27:55SPEAKER_04: If you read the synopsis of the third one, by all means that should have been a good movie, but it wasn't.
- 28:04SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 28:04SPEAKER_00: Sometimes the idea is good, the execution is not so good.
- 28:09SPEAKER_02: Oh, it was so bad.
- 28:14SPEAKER_04: They show the shark, it's not even moving, it's just moving on, it's like completely still, not even moving its fin, and it's just gently just going across the screen, and you're like, that's wild.
- 28:28SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 28:28SPEAKER_02: Or it looks like someone with a hand is holding the toy like a toy shark.
- 28:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 28:35SPEAKER_04: That's exactly what it looks.
- 28:36SPEAKER_04: And then like the dude gets like swallowed by the shark, but then like is like able to pull the grenades so they blow it up.
- 28:45SPEAKER_04: And yes, Cody, you heard me right, grenades.
- 28:49SPEAKER_00: So yeah, no, but fair enough.
- 28:53SPEAKER_04: Hey, if you want to know how they kill the shark in Jaws the Revenge, which is a shark that's getting tired of the Brodies killing them, so they go on a around the world rampage killing all the Brodies because F these guys killing the sharks.
- 29:15SPEAKER_00: They definitely know who's killing them.
- 29:18SPEAKER_04: It's it's wild.
- 29:20SPEAKER_04: You see one person get eight in the whole movie, and it's like a kid, which is weird, or like a teenager.
- 29:28SPEAKER_04: Okay, and um uh what's his bug?
- 29:32SPEAKER_04: Michael Cain is in it, uh, and he is phenomenal.
- 29:36SPEAKER_04: It's incredible.
- 29:38SPEAKER_04: They kill the shark because Brody's wife has had enough of it, and she's she's she's um on the helm of a ship uh that has a broken uh point on the end of it, and she's having flashbacks from like Jaws 1 to now of her kids and her husband fighting these sharks, and then the one shark killing her kid that she decides enough is enough and somehow stab the shark with the tip of the boat.
- 30:17SPEAKER_04: Okay, and that's how it ends.
- 30:23SPEAKER_00: Fair enough, I suppose.
- 30:25SPEAKER_04: Right after the shark jumps out and pulls a whole airplane underwater.
- 30:33SPEAKER_03: Alright.
- 30:34SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no, like if you're looking for a good laugh, watch Jaws the Revenge.
- 30:41SPEAKER_00: Fair enough.
- 30:42SPEAKER_00: It it might go on a list for future stuff.
- 30:46SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no, it'd be great.
- 30:49SPEAKER_04: Um, Alex, I have nothing else for Cody.
- 30:52SPEAKER_03: I'm not sure what you have.
- 30:58SPEAKER_03: I don't have anything.
- 31:00SPEAKER_03: I don't have anything.
- 31:01SPEAKER_02: My headset keeps disconnected and connecting.
- 31:04SPEAKER_04: I okay, so uh I noticed that because you kept muting and unmuting, and I'm like, I guess I'll just talk.
- 31:13SPEAKER_03: No, it's my headset.
- 31:15SPEAKER_03: I don't know what's going on with it right now.
- 31:23SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 31:24SPEAKER_04: We have the technology to make it work, but that technology also decides to never work.
- 31:31SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 31:32SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 31:33SPEAKER_04: Well, Cody, I'm really glad you like this movie.
- 31:35SPEAKER_04: This is another one on my list that uh is definitely probably top ten uh favorite movies of all time.
- 31:43SPEAKER_04: And like I said, I do I do watch it um not as much as Terminator, but I do watch it like once or twice a year.
- 31:51SPEAKER_00: So that's fair.
- 31:53SPEAKER_00: I don't think it would make my like top ten favorite ever, but like it's it's good.
- 31:59SPEAKER_04: So out of the movies you've seen so far, uh was it Tron Trons, we'll just say Tron.
- 32:06SPEAKER_04: Um Godzilla and Just what what would you rank all of those at?
- 32:17SPEAKER_00: I'd probably put the original Tron in last.
- 32:23SPEAKER_00: But I mean, again, if people haven't listened, go back watch that episode.
- 32:27SPEAKER_00: I did not like the original one that much.
- 32:30SPEAKER_00: I would recommend it for like the historical importance of what it did for filmmaking.
- 32:35SPEAKER_00: Certainly didn't really like it.
- 32:38SPEAKER_03: Uh I might go Tron 2 after that.
- 32:44SPEAKER_03: And then Godzilla, Tron 3, probably Jaws and then T2.
- 32:54SPEAKER_03: That's about how I thought that list would go.
- 32:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 33:00SPEAKER_03: I think Jaws and T2 are like pretty close.
- 33:06SPEAKER_00: Which honestly I didn't think I would say, 'cause I didn't know like being as old as they are, like if they would be quite as good.
- 33:15SPEAKER_04: Whose pick was Jaws' pick for you?
- 33:20SPEAKER_04: Was that Alex's?
- 33:21SPEAKER_04: Like who suggested?
- 33:22SPEAKER_03: I have no idea.
- 33:24SPEAKER_03: I think Alex suggested that.
- 33:26SPEAKER_02: Did I suggest Jaws?
- 33:30SPEAKER_02: No, that was that was whenever uh we were throw we all threw things out and he couldn't watch Jurassic Park, he couldn't watch T2 at the time, and he couldn't watch.
- 33:49SPEAKER_03: What was it, Blade Runner?
- 33:53SPEAKER_03: I can't remember.
- 33:54SPEAKER_03: He should be able to watch Blade Runner because it's on HBO.
- 33:57SPEAKER_03: Oh.
- 33:58SPEAKER_03: Hey Cody, you got HBO?
- 34:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 34:02SPEAKER_04: Oh, well then watch Blade Runner next.
- 34:07SPEAKER_00: Uh you sure is on there?
- 34:08SPEAKER_00: Because I know you guys suggested it at one time, and I'm pretty sure it wasn't on anything.
- 34:12SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I thought Blade Runner was the one.
- 34:14SPEAKER_04: I can't remember who suggested Terminator or Jaws.
- 34:16SPEAKER_04: I thought that was you, Alex, but let's take a break.
- 34:19SPEAKER_02: I definitely suggested Terminator 2 because my other one was Congo.
- 34:24SPEAKER_04: That's what it was.
- 34:25SPEAKER_04: Congo, he couldn't watch.
- 34:27SPEAKER_04: Let's see if we could get a small sneak peek on the next movie he's gonna do.
- 34:30SPEAKER_04: Blade Runner, where to watch, is not on HBO.
- 34:34SPEAKER_04: So it's not gonna be Blade Runner.
- 34:37SPEAKER_04: I might just buy, I might just buy Blade Runner.
- 34:40SPEAKER_02: Not on HBO.
- 34:41SPEAKER_02: I could have sworn I saw it on HBO.
- 34:44SPEAKER_00: I've still got two more on your all's last list to get there.
- 34:48SPEAKER_00: I've still got Jurassic Park, which I believe we found on something.
- 34:53SPEAKER_00: I don't remember which one.
- 34:54SPEAKER_00: And then Fire Club was the other one I couldn't find on anything, but see if that's changed.
- 35:00SPEAKER_04: I own Jurassic Park.
- 35:02SPEAKER_04: I forgot I own Jurassic Park, but I own Jurassic Park.
- 35:05SPEAKER_04: So whenever you want to come over.
- 35:10SPEAKER_02: Whenever it's gonna be the hard one.
- 35:12SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 35:13SPEAKER_04: That's another one I don't mind buying.
- 35:15SPEAKER_04: Blade, I don't know why I don't own Blade Runner, and I'm okay owning Fight Club.
- 35:20SPEAKER_04: Like my wife loves that movie.
- 35:24SPEAKER_03: Really?
- 35:25SPEAKER_04: Oh yeah.
- 35:26SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's a great movie.
- 35:27SPEAKER_04: You should watch it.
- 35:30SPEAKER_00: Far it's on the list.
- 35:33SPEAKER_00: Check it on Amazon right now.
- 35:35SPEAKER_04: Hey, and when we're talking about the list, anybody out there listening, give us a few lists, uh, a few movies, classics or or modern, that uh you don't think Cody has seen, and we'll see if we can get them on the list.
- 35:48SPEAKER_04: We might have to post what the list is now and uh see what you guys come up with.
- 35:53SPEAKER_04: I would love to see what you all think Cody should be watching as well.
- 35:58SPEAKER_00: I will say, since we've already talked about it for just between us, no comedies, just because that is way too subjective.
- 36:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, not if it's good or bad.
- 36:10SPEAKER_00: Something like Jaws T2, I get where people could say they didn't like them, but it's a lot harder when it's just object when for the most part it's just kind of objectively like good writing and good like practical effects or whatever.
- 36:27SPEAKER_00: Like when it's objectively harder to say it's bad, yeah, it makes more sense.
- 36:33SPEAKER_00: Whereas like comedy, if you just don't like the style, it doesn't hit.
- 36:39SPEAKER_04: Yeah, like I understand where some people say they don't like what about Bob.
- 36:45SPEAKER_04: I love it because I love that comedy and I love Bill Murray, but if you're not about that comedy, that is the most annoying movie in the world to you.
- 36:54SPEAKER_04: So I get it.
- 36:57SPEAKER_04: Um, I got nothing else, man.
- 36:59SPEAKER_04: Uh uh, I think I'm good.
- 37:01SPEAKER_04: I'm really glad that you enjoyed this movie.
- 37:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, me too.
- 37:06SPEAKER_00: It makes it more enjoyable if I like it.
- 37:13SPEAKER_01: That's hilarious.
- 37:15SPEAKER_02: Hey, there's gonna be a few you're not gonna like.
- 37:18SPEAKER_01: Oh, we had one already with the original Tron, so I expect it.
- 37:24SPEAKER_01: Man, that's great.
- 37:25SPEAKER_04: I don't think hey, I'm gonna I'm gonna call it now.
- 37:27SPEAKER_04: I don't think he's gonna like Blade Runner.
- 37:30SPEAKER_02: Oh, 100% not gonna like Blade Runner.
- 37:33SPEAKER_04: Yeah, okay, good.
- 37:34SPEAKER_04: I'm not crazy.
- 37:35SPEAKER_04: Okay, cool.
- 37:36SPEAKER_02: So he's not one, I could have bet money on that.
- 37:42SPEAKER_04: Oh, dude, I could have too.
- 37:44SPEAKER_04: So hot take.
- 37:47SPEAKER_02: There's I I'm not sure.
- 37:51SPEAKER_02: I don't think he's gonna like Congo or Godfather or the casino.
- 37:58SPEAKER_02: Scarface.
- 38:00SPEAKER_04: I think he'll appreciate the casino for what it is.
- 38:03SPEAKER_04: I don't think he'll like the Godfather.
- 38:06SPEAKER_04: I think he'll hate Congo.
- 38:09SPEAKER_04: Um, I think Congo will take the place of the first Tron movie.
- 38:14SPEAKER_00: I'm telling you right now, Godfather's going way down the list.
- 38:18SPEAKER_00: That's like a three-hour movie.
- 38:20SPEAKER_00: And it's worth every minute.
- 38:23SPEAKER_00: It's strictly the length where I'm like, that's not happening anytime soon.
- 38:27SPEAKER_00: That's so long.
- 38:29SPEAKER_04: Actually, hey, hey, Alex, I know I know we're like out of time, but Alex, Battlefield Earth.
- 38:35SPEAKER_04: Battlefield Earth.
- 38:37SPEAKER_02: Dude, I if he does that one, he's gotta do it by himself.
- 38:41SPEAKER_02: I can't do it again.
- 38:43SPEAKER_04: It took me three days to watch.
- 38:46SPEAKER_04: You're expecting me to watch it?
- 38:49SPEAKER_04: I'll I Cody, I will watch that movie with you again just so I get a good laugh out of it.
- 38:56SPEAKER_00: It's so bad.
- 38:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well, I'll I'll make that deal.
- 39:00SPEAKER_04: Okay, shoot.
- 39:01SPEAKER_04: You you let me I'm gonna regret that, uh, but I will watch you let me know when, and I will watch Battlefield Earth with you.
- 39:12SPEAKER_00: I'll put it on the list for after we get through at least one if we can get Fight Club 2.
- 39:18SPEAKER_04: Oh, yeah.
- 39:18SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no, no, no.
- 39:19SPEAKER_04: I'll like make you pizza and everything for that because I'll feel bad the whole time you're watching it.
- 39:25SPEAKER_02: You can't eat you gotta eat something else, John.
- 39:29SPEAKER_02: Humans don't humans only eat one thing.
- 39:32SPEAKER_04: Oh yeah, yeah, I know, yeah.
- 39:34SPEAKER_04: No, well, I said pizza, it's gonna be that instead.
- 39:38SPEAKER_04: All right, let's let's end this.
- 39:40SPEAKER_04: Take us out, Alex.
- 39:41SPEAKER_02: All right, I'm Alex.
- 39:45SPEAKER_03: I'm John and I'm Cody.
- 39:48SPEAKER_03: We're gonna need a bigger boat.
