Ep. 183. Who are the Outliers in The Uncanny X-Men?! · Vigilante Vibes Podcast

• 0:11
Hello Marvel fans, comic geeks and all the nerds in between
• 0:14
that I am Megan with vigilante vibes and I want to talk about
• 0:18
  more mutants, namely New Mutants.
• 0:21
Not the new Mutants, but newer mutants that was brought to us
• 0:25
by GAIL Simone in The Uncanny X-Men.
• 0:29
If you have not read it yet, you need to, but I want to talk
• 0:33
about the Outliers. The Outliers, They're a group of
• 0:36
four young mutants who sought the X Men's help upon being
• 0:40
haunted by a monstrous creature called the Hag.
• 0:43
After engaging in a brief fight against the X-Men over a
• 0:45
misunderstanding, the Outliers were taken in as their new
• 0:49
students. Now being mentored by some of
• 0:52
her favorite X-Men like Rogue, Gambit, Wolverine, Nightcrawler,
• 0:56
Jubilee, the Outliers are making a big name for themselves
• 1:00
already in the world of the X-Men.
• 1:02
Let's start with my personal favorite, Hataru AKA Death
• 1:07
Dream. Hataru was a mutant born in
• 1:10
Kyoto, Japan and his life started out dark.
• 1:15
He actually died 4 times on the day he was born until his mutant
• 1:19
power kicked in and brought him back each time.
• 1:22
Months later after his mother passed away, his abilities let
• 1:25
him communicate with her spirit and through her he learned the
• 1:29
strange story of his birth. After that he decided to go by
• 1:32
the name Death Dream. Now I he sounds he's a dark
• 1:36
character. He's very dark complicated but
• 1:39
he's so sweet I want to adopt him.
• 1:42
If you haven't read him, it's just every issue she comes out
• 1:47
with GAIL Simone. I find myself saying it's a
• 1:52
death dream. I I love that little dark
• 1:55
mutants. But you know, as well as him
• 1:58
being a cinnamon roll of the outliers.
• 2:00
I want to talk about his powers. He has death state death dreams
• 2:05
mutant ability lets him switch between being alive and dead
• 2:08
whenever he wants. No matter what form he's in, he
• 2:11
can always see the spirits of the dead around him, which is
• 2:16
bananas necromancy. When he's in his undead form,
• 2:21
Death Dream becomes deeply linked to the spiritual world.
• 2:25
Soul manipulation by letting spirits possess him or by
• 2:28
summoning their energy, Hataru can use the powers of the dead
• 2:32
in all kinds of ways. He can even create a dark
• 2:36
shadowy aura around himself that lashes out like tendrils to grab
• 2:42
or restrain enemies. Like it's cool flight.
• 2:47
Using these summoned souls, Hataru can lift himself in the
• 2:51
air and fly. Self resurrection, that is.
• 2:55
  I feel like that's pretty self-explanatory.
• 2:57
Darkness manipulation. Hataru can control and shape
• 3:01
darkness itself, using it as both a weapon and a shield.
• 3:05
Contaminant immunity. Being part dead has its perks.
• 3:08
Poisons and toxins don't affect him at all.
• 3:12
  Accelerated healing. Astral Vision.
• 3:15
Hataru can doesn't just see ghosts, he can sense
• 3:18
supernatural entities connected to the living people too.
• 3:21
That means he can tell when someone's haunted or influenced
• 3:24
by spirit. Next one is Valentin AKA Ransom
• 3:29
Valentin Coria. It was born in Buenos Aires to a
• 3:32
rich family who wanted nothing to do with him once they learned
• 3:35
he was a mutant. A tale as old as time.
• 3:38
The nurses who delivered him realized something was wrong.
• 3:41
He had no heartbeat, no heart at all.
• 3:44
When he was a kid, things got even worse.
• 3:46
Valentin was kidnapped for ransom, but instead of paying
• 3:50
up, his parents just said, no, we're good.
• 3:54
The kidnappers eventually tried to kill him, shooting him 14
• 3:56
times. But instead of dying, the
• 3:59
bullets made him stronger. His mutant powers kicked in and
• 4:03
Valentin returned on his captors, killing them before
• 4:08
escaping. From that point on, he lived on
• 4:10
his own and took the name Ransom as a reminder of what happened
• 4:13
to him. The last there is a few a few
• 4:17
issues ago in the Uncanny X-Men that showed what a piece of
• 4:20
garbage Ransom came from as a family.
• 4:24
And I I was excited because it had been, I had been waiting and
• 4:29
waiting for Ransom to get, you know, his origin.
• 4:32
I want I want to know more about him because him and Wolverine
• 4:35
get on get along like peanut butter and Jelly.
• 4:37
And so it's interesting to see where he comes from.
• 4:41
But I think he's like the bro of the outliers.
• 4:46
You know, he has everyone's back.
• 4:47
He's the Big Brother and I love him so.
• 4:51
  His powers. Black hole Heart.
• 4:54
Ransom literally has a black hole where his heart should be.
• 4:57
It's the source of all his powers and the reason he
• 5:00
survived things that should have killed him a dozen times over.
• 5:03
Energy absorption. The black hole in Ransom's chest
• 5:06
constantly pulls in and absorbs different forms of energy,
• 5:10
everything from kinetic impact to magical blasts.
• 5:14
The more energy it takes in, the stronger he gets.
• 5:17
Superhuman strength. He's very strong, superhuman
• 5:21
durability, his body is tough enough to survive hits that
• 5:25
would destroy a normal person. So cool.
• 5:30
The next one, the one we probably know the very least
• 5:34
about so far in the Uncanny X-Men.
• 5:38
I'm excited to see what happens with her.
• 5:41
Sophia Young AKA Jitter Sophia Young was a mutant from
• 5:45
Singapore with a pretty wild ability.
• 5:48
She could instantly learn any skill for one minute.
• 5:51
At first, she used her power to ace her exams, but that didn't
• 5:54
exactly make her popular. Some jealous classmates attacked
• 5:57
her, and in a panic, Sophia used her powers to pick up martial
• 6:00
arts on the spot. Unfortunately, she hit back a
• 6:04
little too hard and accidentally paralyzed one of them.
• 6:06
They had it coming. You're good, girl.
• 6:09
She's the mutant that we haven't gotten to see too much of in
• 6:15
Uncanny X-Men, so I'm interested to see where GAIL Simone takes
• 6:18
Jitter. Also, I have to mention, Jitter
• 6:21
has a little flirtation going on with the next mutant I'll talk
• 6:24
about. And between you and me, they're
• 6:26
super cute together and I hope they stay in next couple.
• 6:29
So yeah, what is what is Jitter's actual power?
• 6:35
It's hyper focus. Jitter's mutant power enables
• 6:38
her to acquire any skills she wants for one minute if she
• 6:40
concentrates hard enough. But it could be martial arts,
• 6:45
acrobatics, medical skills, really any skill.
• 6:50
I think that's really cool. The next one, Becca Simone
• 6:53
Pinet, otherwise known as Calico Becca.
• 6:57
Yes, the same Becca of the Loudon County.
• 7:00
Simone Pinets was born into wealth and raised by an
• 7:04
overprotective mother who kept her sheltered from the outside
• 7:06
world. Her mom wanted her to be the
• 7:09
picture perfect American Princess and drilled into her
• 7:14
fear and hatred of mutants. So when Becca eventually
• 7:17
discovered she was one, it completely messed with her sense
• 7:20
of identity and self worth. Becca's closest bond was with
• 7:24
her horse, Ember, with whom she shared a psychic connection.
• 7:28
But her quiet, privileged life did not last long.
• 7:32
She and Amber were haunted by a terrifying creature called the
• 7:34
Hag, and this is when she runs into the other outliers.
• 7:37
Then this is where they run into the X-Men, and they all become a
• 7:41
happy little X-Men family. So what is Calico's powers
• 7:46
  exactly? Psychokinesis.
• 7:50
Calico is a mutant with a strong psychic power that let her
• 7:53
manipulate things with her mind. Telepathy.
• 7:56
She's capable of mental communication and other
• 7:59
telepathic feats, though the full extent of her power is not
• 8:02
  clear. Summoning Calico can physically
• 8:07
summon her horse Ember from anywhere.
• 8:09
She once called Ember straight to a mall to help her and her
• 8:12
friends who were attacked by Sentinel dogs.
• 8:15
Mind Link. Her psychic bond with Ember runs
• 8:18
very deep. The two share thoughts,
• 8:20
emotions, and instincts thanks to their telepathic connection.
• 8:25
Power be stole through that connection.
• 8:28
Calico can transform Ember into different horse forms, each with
• 8:32
  unique abilities psychic constructs.
• 8:36
When she changes Ember's form, Calico can also create physical
• 8:40
objects made of pure psychic energy like armor, a sword, even
• 8:46
wings for the both of them. Fire generation, Calico can
• 8:51
physically create and control fire, real flames that burn like
• 8:54
normal fire, but completely under her mental command.
• 8:58
So together, these mutants form the outliers.
• 9:02
They're powerful, they're compelling, and they come with
• 9:04
so much depth that makes you want to know so much more about
• 9:09
them as a group and individually.
• 9:12
If you haven't checked out GAIL Simone's Uncanny X-Men, that's
• 9:15
it's in From the Ashes era, which is the current era.
• 9:20
I made that weird. I'm sorry.
• 9:22
You absolutely should. It's easily one of the best
• 9:25
things that come out of From the Ashes.
• 9:28
And GAIL, you could tell, puts our heart and soul into it.
• 9:32
  It always has incredible artwork.
• 9:35
Personally, I'm a big fan of Luciano Vecchio's work in it.
• 9:38
It's just, it just sings to my soul.
• 9:41
It makes me very happy. Or you can check out my reviews
• 9:45
of each and every issue on nerdinitiative.com.
• 9:48
I will have that link right below the episode.
• 9:51
So thank you for taking this journey down, learning about
• 9:56
more mutants with me. I really hope you enjoyed it.
• 9:59
I hope I talked some of you into checking them out 'cause I need
• 10:02
more people to talk about this with.
• 10:05
I feel like no one wants to talk about mutants, especially new
• 10:07
mutants anymore. So help me out there guys.
• 10:11
Also be sure to like and subscribe.
• 10:13
And with that being said, have a marvelous day.
