- 0:17Speaker 1: Welcome into jag Zam this Monday, and ty Nannie Stevens,
- 0:19Speaker 1: Brian Sexton, and John Osier are with me as the
- 0:22Speaker 1: Jags fall.
- 0:23Speaker 2: To oho and four.
- 0:23Speaker 1: There winless this season, as they fall to the Texans
- 0:26Speaker 1: in a game that they led and could have won
- 0:28Speaker 1: but didn't end up that wet.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Let's talk things out.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Big thing Number one is oh no oho and four
- 0:34Speaker 1: for this team. Brian, We've talked about those small playoff
- 0:37Speaker 1: chances when they were oh and three.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Oh and four, they're pretty much nonexistent. Things are not
- 0:42Speaker 2: looking up right now.
- 0:43Speaker 3: No, and listen.
- 0:46Speaker 4: Oh and four is a scenario that I don't think
- 0:48Speaker 4: a lot of people thought was possible. They thought this
- 0:50Speaker 4: team was talented enough. They get a win in the
- 0:53Speaker 4: month of September probably two, and when you look at it,
- 0:56Speaker 4: that's certainly something that could have happened. But to sit
- 0:59Speaker 4: here right now, zero and four, it unleashes a torrent
- 1:03Speaker 4: of negativity. People aren't interested in your football team right now.
- 1:07Speaker 4: You're coming home this week with the throwbacks that everybody
- 1:11Speaker 4: wanted to see. Right there should be this enormous ground
- 1:14Speaker 4: swell with Tom Coughlin going into the Pride the legends
- 1:17Speaker 4: here if you had just one win right now, you
- 1:21Speaker 4: could sell a win over the Colts, and we're right
- 1:23Speaker 4: in the thick of this thing. But to watch it
- 1:26Speaker 4: get away and John, the thing that stood out to
- 1:28Speaker 4: me is they had fourth and goal at the one
- 1:30Speaker 4: yard line and I doubted that they would get it,
- 1:32Speaker 4: and they got the ball back with three fifty one
- 1:34Speaker 4: left to play and I thought, oh, and they went
- 1:36Speaker 4: three and out. It's almost predictable that this team is
- 1:40Speaker 4: going to find a way not to get the job done,
- 1:43Speaker 4: because that's what they've done the first four games.
- 1:45Speaker 3: Yeah. I actually had, believe it or not, some positive
- 1:49Speaker 3: emails from people saying, hey, you know, they played better,
- 1:52Speaker 3: they did good things, and they did and they've done
- 1:56Speaker 3: good things week one or two. The problem is, this
- 1:58Speaker 3: is not a team right now that's built to build,
- 2:02Speaker 3: you know, and I don't I'm not saying they don't
- 2:04Speaker 3: want to build at this point, but this was not
- 2:06Speaker 3: supposed to be a one in three or zero to four,
- 2:08Speaker 3: even two and two coming out of the gate. It
- 2:11Speaker 3: was supposed to do it now, and they're not doing
- 2:14Speaker 3: the things now that you have to do to win.
- 2:16Speaker 3: There are spots, but you know, here and there and
- 2:20Speaker 3: improvement and spurts. That's not what this season's about, but
- 2:23Speaker 3: the critical spots.
- 2:24Speaker 4: And that's the part that I have the most regret for,
- 2:26Speaker 4: the critical moments. Look, you got a fourth and goal
- 2:29Speaker 4: at the one yard line. Whether you want them to
- 2:31Speaker 4: kick or goal for it, you got to get the points.
- 2:33Speaker 4: You can't come away with nothing three point fifty one
- 2:36Speaker 4: left to play. You have two timeouts and you have
- 2:38Speaker 4: a three point lead at your own thirty yard line,
- 2:40Speaker 4: and you can't get a first down or two. I mean,
- 2:43Speaker 4: that's what an elite quarterback is supposed to get you.
- 2:46Speaker 4: That's what a team that expects to win is supposed
- 2:48Speaker 4: to be able to do. And yet in the biggest moments,
- 2:51Speaker 4: the last couple of weeks, when the most opportunity was there,
- 2:55Speaker 4: they haven't been able to do it.
- 2:57Speaker 1: At leads us into big thing Number two, which is
- 2:59Speaker 1: Trevor trouble. Brian touched on it, but Trevor also talked
- 3:02Speaker 1: about it. There were some miss throws out out there,
- 3:05Speaker 1: some missed opportunities that he didn't take advantage of.
- 3:09Speaker 5: I s I have to watch it. You know, both
- 3:13Speaker 5: both felt good coming out and obviously just missed it.
- 3:15Speaker 5: You know, guys, at a good job today have getting opened.
- 3:17Speaker 5: You know, they played a lot of man coverage, which
- 3:20Speaker 5: is something you know as an offense that you'd like
- 3:22Speaker 5: to see, you know, get your players have a chance
- 3:23Speaker 5: to go win one on ones and as a quarterback
- 3:26Speaker 5: you get to go, you know, push the.
- 3:27Speaker 4: Ball down field at times.
- 3:28Speaker 5: So uh yeah, it was just just missed a few.
- 3:34Speaker 2: John.
- 3:34Speaker 1: There's a lot of problems with this team right now,
- 3:36Speaker 1: not just Trevor, but I think we needed more from
- 3:38Speaker 1: Trevor yesterday and I think those two miss throws were big.
- 3:41Speaker 1: I think the fourth and one there were plays out
- 3:44Speaker 1: there to be had that we didn't get from him.
- 3:46Speaker 3: Yeah, look on the bomb to Kirk. Not every quarterback
- 3:51Speaker 3: completes that every time. The problem is that's the moment
- 3:55Speaker 3: we've all been talking about. Those are the moments the
- 3:57Speaker 3: Brian Thomas Junior missed in the first quarter. You know,
- 4:01Speaker 3: have to hit all those but I think Trevor said
- 4:03Speaker 3: it best. You're not going to hit them all, but
- 4:05Speaker 3: you've got to hit more than he's hitting. There's also
- 4:08Speaker 3: the moments there's some pocket awareness stuff, not awful yesterday,
- 4:11Speaker 3: but still going on. As Brian alluded to at some
- 4:16Speaker 3: point year four, contract signed, all that stuff. There's got
- 4:20Speaker 3: to be some lifting going on, and the lifting's not
- 4:24Speaker 3: going on.
- 4:24Speaker 4: And that's where I'm at right now. I've had this
- 4:27Speaker 4: conversation with people about does Treuvor have enough confidence? And
- 4:31Speaker 4: I look at a guy and it clearly looks to
- 4:34Speaker 4: me like he is struggling with the weight of the expectations.
- 4:37Speaker 4: In fact, the head coach even said that the guy
- 4:38Speaker 4: who's on the television broadcast talked about him, mentioning it
- 4:42Speaker 4: in their production meetings that he appears to be dealing
- 4:45Speaker 4: with something the expectations that he didn't the first couple
- 4:48Speaker 4: of years. So I get it his confidence, But how
- 4:51Speaker 4: about my confidence in him when the moment is there, John,
- 4:54Speaker 4: I expect him to be able to make it all
- 4:56Speaker 4: the time. No, I don't think he's Tom Brady. I
- 4:59Speaker 4: don't think that he is is Patrick Mahomes. But three
- 5:02Speaker 4: fifty one left to play, two timeouts, and you've been
- 5:05Speaker 4: able to move the ball effectively, and you can't get
- 5:08Speaker 4: a first down or two to salt this one away.
- 5:11Speaker 4: My confidence in him right now is a bit shaken.
- 5:14Speaker 4: I hope that that's just me an observer and not
- 5:16Speaker 4: the locker room.
- 5:17Speaker 3: Yeah, the shame of it is on the drive you're
- 5:21Speaker 3: talking about Brian second and ten, he made what really
- 5:25Speaker 3: wasn't a bad throw over to Gabe Davis and the
- 5:27Speaker 3: Texans defender made a nice play getting the book. But
- 5:31Speaker 3: when I say that, we're talking about moments and we're
- 5:35Speaker 3: sort of picking it apart big picture, those moments have
- 5:39Speaker 3: to happen more. And as Brian said, you don't have
- 5:42Speaker 3: a feeling four minutes, six minutes key situations that there
- 5:46Speaker 3: is a surge forward. You feel like there's sort of
- 5:50Speaker 3: dog paddling, if you will.
- 5:51Speaker 4: And this conversation and conversations like these kai are going
- 5:54Speaker 4: on all over town and they're not going away, and
- 5:57Speaker 4: they shouldn't at this point in time. He's gonna have
- 5:59Speaker 4: to fight through this. Whether it's his wife, whether it's
- 6:03Speaker 4: his family, whether it's a coach, someone's going to have
- 6:05Speaker 4: to help him through this very difficult stretch. And if
- 6:08Speaker 4: they do, I believe he's capable of being reclaimed and
- 6:12Speaker 4: being a guy that can lead this team to wins.
- 6:15Speaker 4: But this is real adversity and personally he's got to
- 6:19Speaker 4: get through it.
- 6:20Speaker 2: I think we all know he's capable.
- 6:21Speaker 1: It's getting through that diversity fighting through that we've talked about,
- 6:24Speaker 1: and that's definitely not going to end anytime soon. Because
- 6:26Speaker 1: they're only four games into the season. Our final big
- 6:28Speaker 1: thing today is going to be depleted defense. The defense
- 6:31Speaker 1: played really well I think overall, especially considering all the
- 6:34Speaker 1: injuries they've been dealing with.
- 6:35Speaker 2: Right before the game, Devin Lloyd was scratched.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Brian, I think we saw some impressed and plays out
- 6:39Speaker 1: of Ventrel Miller. Monterrek Brown has been playing well as
- 6:42Speaker 1: he stepped in, and over all, the defense I think
- 6:44Speaker 1: did pretty well.
- 6:44Speaker 4: It did, and I was surprised. They wrote in my
- 6:46Speaker 4: notebook while watching the game yesterday, the defense looks a
- 6:49Speaker 4: step slow. How many starters are missing? You know? Is
- 6:52Speaker 4: that why? And then yet they came out john in
- 6:55Speaker 4: the third quarter and five straight drives. They took a
- 6:58Speaker 4: Texans offense that scored on three of their first four
- 7:01Speaker 4: drives in the first half and made a punt And
- 7:03Speaker 4: so I was really impressed, especially with Montterrek Brown, who
- 7:06Speaker 4: had a rugged night on Monday Night football and struggled
- 7:09Speaker 4: a bit early in the first half against Nico Collins,
- 7:12Speaker 4: and the Texans really played well. Then trom Miller, I'm
- 7:14Speaker 4: going to talk about him. I think he's played terrific.
- 7:17Speaker 4: The defense played well enough for you to win. And
- 7:19Speaker 4: I know you look at the yards and the last drive,
- 7:22Speaker 4: but the defense did everything they could, well almost everything
- 7:27Speaker 4: they could. They could have got another takeaway.
- 7:29Speaker 3: Yeah, it played well enough to win. I think what
- 7:32Speaker 3: they would tell you pressure in big situations. There were
- 7:36Speaker 3: moments where they didn't get to Stroud where they could
- 7:38Speaker 3: have against Miami and this game, good efforts overall. At
- 7:43Speaker 3: the same time, in that winning moment at the end,
- 7:47Speaker 3: you allowed a long time consuming drive and then no takeaway.
- 7:50Speaker 3: So look more than good enough to win. But I
- 7:54Speaker 3: know they're sitting there this morning saying, man, the moments.
- 7:58Speaker 3: Just like everything that's defined this season so far, it's
- 8:01Speaker 3: the moments that matter, and the whole team hasn't come
- 8:04Speaker 3: through in those moments. That's why you're only four it is.
- 8:06Speaker 2: And there's a lot to look forward to as well
- 8:08Speaker 2: going forward.
- 8:08Speaker 1: Josh Heinzellen left that game with a concussion, so it's
- 8:10Speaker 1: something to consider as we look forward what they're going
- 8:12Speaker 1: to look like this week against the Cults. Say with
- 8:14Speaker 1: us here on Jacksam, we're going to go over the
- 8:16Speaker 1: highlights from yesterday. Move the freight move the freight Magellan

- 8:49Speaker 3: Start worrying about.
- 8:52Speaker 1: As four year.
- 8:55Speaker 3: My status?
- 8:56Speaker 6: Yeah, after an OM four star avenue. No, it's kind
- 9:06Speaker 6: of a strange question, but okay.
- 9:09Speaker 1: Head coach Doug Peterson asked after the game about his
- 9:12Speaker 1: status going forward with the team as the team is
- 9:14Speaker 1: zero to four. I haven't seen any changes yet, but
- 9:17Speaker 1: always an option no.
- 9:18Speaker 4: And you know, clearly it's an awkward question to ask,
- 9:20Speaker 4: it's a tough question to answer. It's just life in
- 9:23Speaker 4: the NFL. It's not like Doug hasn't heard that before.
- 9:25Speaker 4: It's not like every coach whose team is in a
- 9:28Speaker 4: losing rut doesn't hear that. It's a fair question and
- 9:31Speaker 4: he gave it an answer.
- 9:33Speaker 3: Yeah, it'll be a topic till it's not. It's not
- 9:36Speaker 3: my exact hot take, but it's on those lines later.
- 9:39Speaker 1: So I'll say, okay, all right, let's look at some
- 9:41Speaker 1: of the film from yesterday. There were some good things
- 9:43Speaker 1: and then there were some not so good things. So
- 9:44Speaker 1: let's start off with this muffed Punp's felt like the
- 9:48Speaker 1: play that the Jaguars needed, right, They're waiting for that
- 9:50Speaker 1: sign Daniel Thomas able to recover this at the two
- 9:53Speaker 1: yard line, give yourself a short field after you know,
- 9:55Speaker 1: not getting anything going on offense. To get the ball
- 9:57Speaker 1: immediately back in the red zone felt like maybe this
- 9:59Speaker 1: is moment.
- 10:00Speaker 4: Finally, right, And I did think when they got the
- 10:02Speaker 4: ball that to here they were going to score. I mean,
- 10:05Speaker 4: this team had been waiting for something good to happen,
- 10:08Speaker 4: and then of course the touchdown passed to what Brian
- 10:10Speaker 4: Thomas Junior just it felt like it made sense.
- 10:12Speaker 3: Well, it was a little different scenario because they sort
- 10:15Speaker 3: of had time after this play, They had time to
- 10:18Speaker 3: sort of gather and come in, whereas they tried to
- 10:20Speaker 3: go tempo later in the game and just never really
- 10:23Speaker 3: could get that momentum back from the fifty eight yarder. Yeah,
- 10:28Speaker 3: it was a clutch play. It was a big time play.
- 10:30Speaker 3: I mean, it was a big time moment to take
- 10:31Speaker 3: advantage of it, and you felt like that it kept
- 10:35Speaker 3: them in the game even when they had sort of
- 10:37Speaker 3: a first half ull so huge.
- 10:38Speaker 1: Put absolutely, especially after Monday Night football when we saw
- 10:41Speaker 1: them get out of it so early. I felt like
- 10:42Speaker 1: they really needed that at this point. But then Texan's
- 10:45Speaker 1: kind of going the other way.
- 10:47Speaker 5: C J.
- 10:47Speaker 2: Stroud.
- 10:48Speaker 1: That connection with Nico Collins, we saw it right out
- 10:50Speaker 1: of the gate yesterday just I think one hundred and
- 10:53Speaker 1: fifty one yards they had on twelve receptions for him
- 10:56Speaker 1: and the touchdown later on that is just I mean,
- 10:59Speaker 1: I know they have a great why receiving course, so
- 11:00Speaker 1: it was going to be somebody, but that one really hurt.
- 11:02Speaker 2: Yet, Well, you did.
- 11:03Speaker 4: Choose, was it DeAndre Hopkins who used to beat the
- 11:05Speaker 4: Jaguars or Andre Johnson. Nico Collins is a guy that
- 11:08Speaker 4: seemed like he could go against anyone and find any
- 11:11Speaker 4: spot on the field and make a reception.
- 11:13Speaker 3: It hurt, but it didn't. It felt like they kept
- 11:18Speaker 3: it under control enough to stay in it. There's sometimes
- 11:21Speaker 3: with a high powered offense like this that you sort
- 11:23Speaker 3: of have to I don't wanna say, can see you
- 11:25Speaker 3: want to give one hundred and fifty, but I don't
- 11:28Speaker 3: know that they felt like this completely controlled the game
- 11:33Speaker 3: until the very end twenty seven yarder, right, yeah, so
- 11:37Speaker 3: stayed in it. But then again, big moments for this
- 11:40Speaker 3: franchise this year, big moment at the end.
- 11:42Speaker 1: Yeah, and they did a pretty good job with I
- 11:44Speaker 1: think some of the other receivers. Obviously Steph Diggs had
- 11:46Speaker 1: the touchdown, but overall that held him pretty well. Had
- 11:49Speaker 1: that touchdown there as they tied up the game. Then
- 11:51Speaker 1: later some issues Trevor talked about, obviously connecting overthrow on Kirk,
- 11:56Speaker 1: that issue with Brian Thomas Junior a couple of plays
- 11:58Speaker 1: there where he was overthrown, and then also Brian not
- 12:01Speaker 1: getting his head around maybe a rookie mistake a little
- 12:03Speaker 1: later on. But it just hurts when you go back
- 12:05Speaker 1: and you look at it and you're like, this completely
- 12:07Speaker 1: changes the outlook of the game if you get that there.
- 12:10Speaker 3: Well, again, all season long, we've been talking about it
- 12:13Speaker 3: being a moment's sleep and the moment in the first
- 12:18Speaker 3: half you could get seven there instead of three. The
- 12:21Speaker 3: moment the second half of Kirk, which I'm sure we'll
- 12:23Speaker 3: see you're not going to complete every fifty yard pass.
- 12:28Speaker 3: But think about the games when you're watching NFL live
- 12:32Speaker 3: at night, the moments that have a team with the
- 12:36Speaker 3: winning score on the end are the teams that make
- 12:38Speaker 3: those plays in those moments. It's got to happen more often.
- 12:43Speaker 3: And when he didn't hit it to Kirk, you're like
- 12:44Speaker 3: man in the second half of the game, when you
- 12:47Speaker 3: feel like they've been outplayed, Brian, they had these moments
- 12:50Speaker 3: where you could have been up ten with the comfortable victory, though,
- 12:53Speaker 3: and it was so right there, but then it felt
- 12:56Speaker 3: like it was never going to be there. Right.
- 12:58Speaker 4: No, listen, you're right on and credit to I mean,
- 13:01Speaker 4: there's all kinds of conversations about the play calling this morning,
- 13:03Speaker 4: but the play calls got those two guys open, and
- 13:05Speaker 4: you're not going.
- 13:06Speaker 3: To make it express if they had those three.
- 13:08Speaker 4: Hundred percent right And listen, those guys were both open.
- 13:11Speaker 4: That's the part where you look at it. How do
- 13:13Speaker 4: you get miss it if you're contested down the field
- 13:16Speaker 4: and you got to make a really difficult catch. But
- 13:18Speaker 4: the reason that people are having difficult that I'm having
- 13:20Speaker 4: difficulty with those two throws is because they were both
- 13:23Speaker 4: open and that's the elite that you expect. And if
- 13:27Speaker 4: you've got that, listen the way the defense played in
- 13:29Speaker 4: the second half. You're in control the whole way and
- 13:32Speaker 4: you're not coming down to biting your nails at the end.
- 13:34Speaker 3: But I think the frustrating thing for everybody is first
- 13:37Speaker 3: three games. Overall. There were moments on either side, of course,
- 13:41Speaker 3: but overall you came away with boy didn't have a
- 13:43Speaker 3: lot of time.
- 13:44Speaker 4: Yeah, well he did yesterday.
- 13:46Speaker 3: Yesterday. There were a couple of plays, but overall you felt,
- 13:49Speaker 3: like I've been saying all year, quarterbacks in this league,
- 13:52Speaker 3: they're going to be under pressure at times when they
- 13:54Speaker 3: have clean that's when you got to make the play.
- 13:56Speaker 3: You got to make the play again. I hate saying
- 13:58Speaker 3: the word anymore.
- 13:59Speaker 4: In the moment, well, I wrote on our final analysis
- 14:02Speaker 4: this week on Jaguars dot Com. Look, if Daniel Hunter
- 14:05Speaker 4: and Will Anderson are able to run like Greg Rousseau
- 14:08Speaker 4: and Von Miller did on Monday Night Football, they're in trouble.
- 14:11Speaker 4: He was never really in trouble. There were sad there
- 14:14Speaker 4: were some moments. As John alluded to, the offensive line
- 14:17Speaker 4: played pretty.
- 14:18Speaker 1: Well, which is impressive because normally we're ragging on them,
- 14:21Speaker 1: so that'll tell you that they did play well. It
- 14:23Speaker 1: wasn't really mentioned at all, at least when I thought
- 14:24Speaker 1: about it and looked back at some of these highlights.
- 14:27Speaker 1: Let's look to the other side of the ball. We
- 14:28Speaker 1: saw the holding penalty in the end zone. The defense
- 14:30Speaker 1: was kind of holding it together, then that penalty, and
- 14:33Speaker 1: then that led to Nico Collins touchdown.
- 14:35Speaker 3: Again.
- 14:36Speaker 1: It's just the little things, and it's just making mistakes
- 14:39Speaker 1: in those moments that hirshe and keeps these drives going.
- 14:42Speaker 4: The safety play has not been great this year, and
- 14:44Speaker 4: Antonio Johnson is a player for whom the Jaguars have
- 14:47Speaker 4: tremendous admiration. They believe that he can be an the
- 14:51Speaker 4: elite level player with the length and the height, the
- 14:54Speaker 4: speed and the instincts. He has not played very well
- 14:57Speaker 4: and yesterday was a great example of it.
- 14:59Speaker 3: Oh credit the He does still play hard, yes and
- 15:04Speaker 3: he's still a little bit of a young player, so
- 15:08Speaker 3: I think that they continuing to play hard as he
- 15:11Speaker 3: gains more confidence and awareness and he'll get better. From
- 15:13Speaker 3: that big time hit late in the game, that was
- 15:16Speaker 3: a great play to not get the penalty. That was
- 15:18Speaker 3: really a big play late, so but overall noticed safty
- 15:21Speaker 3: play hasn't done what they thought it would be.
- 15:23Speaker 1: All right, let's look ahead to the Jaguars other touchdowns
- 15:26Speaker 1: BTJ great catch to lead up to that catch from
- 15:29Speaker 1: Christian Kirk, who.
- 15:30Speaker 2: Had a pretty good day.
- 15:31Speaker 1: I think this is why gets so frustrated with Trevor,
- 15:33Speaker 1: because you're like, I know you can make that throw.
- 15:35Speaker 2: I can you make these throws?
- 15:36Speaker 1: Tremdous catch from Brian Thomas Junior as well, and then
- 15:40Speaker 1: you don't get it when you need it.
- 15:41Speaker 3: It feels like it was a great throw and this
- 15:44Speaker 3: led to a touchdown, but unfortunately really the only extended
- 15:48Speaker 3: touchdown drive they had when they had an opportunity for.
- 15:52Speaker 4: I say two or three more plus a couple of
- 15:55Speaker 4: plays like that ignite your offense, right, I think you'd
- 15:58Speaker 4: think with three to fifty one left playing with making
- 16:00Speaker 4: some throws like these two, that you're able to make
- 16:03Speaker 4: some throws and get it first down. That's the part,
- 16:06Speaker 4: is you think that you're ready to ignite and it
- 16:09Speaker 4: just fizzles out.
- 16:10Speaker 3: Yeah. Sometimes, well we'll see it in a minute.
- 16:13Speaker 1: All right, let's talk a little bit about Tank Spigsby
- 16:15Speaker 1: gets that huge run, right, rips it off, almost makes
- 16:18Speaker 1: it in, and then they give the ball back to
- 16:20Speaker 1: him twice after that in that same drive which he
- 16:23Speaker 1: just ran almost sixty yards, So obviously he's tired. I
- 16:25Speaker 1: understand you want to give the ball back to him,
- 16:27Speaker 1: let him get the touchdown. But I felt the second
- 16:29Speaker 1: time on second now when they.
- 16:30Speaker 2: Gave it to him, it didn't work the first time.
- 16:32Speaker 1: Maybe we bring in some fresh legs something like that.
- 16:34Speaker 1: I know, revision of history on Monday.
- 16:36Speaker 4: But still, well, I'll leave it with Fred Taylor, who
- 16:38Speaker 4: told us on postgame radio last night. They even him right.
- 16:41Speaker 4: And Fred's always like I could have scored on that one.
- 16:43Speaker 4: I would have scored on that one. He said, sixty yards,
- 16:46Speaker 4: I'm gassed. I need a break. Fred never admits that, right,
- 16:49Speaker 4: but yep, I need I would have given him the break.
- 16:52Speaker 3: Yeah, I think Trevor alluded to it. They've had success
- 16:55Speaker 3: before where they go quick in that situation. The defense
- 17:01Speaker 3: expects you to be trying to sve and trying to
- 17:05Speaker 3: get set. They've had success catching them on their heels. So,
- 17:08Speaker 3: as you said, Ryan, the first one you sort of got,
- 17:11Speaker 3: I thought you should have scored on the fifty eight yarder.
- 17:13Speaker 3: I'm not a running back, but I felt like he
- 17:17Speaker 3: will probably look back at that play and think, I
- 17:20Speaker 3: just should have stuck it in on the fifty eight yarder.
- 17:22Speaker 3: I shouldn't have been leaning so far outside. That's nitpicking. Still,
- 17:26Speaker 3: get even with that. The great teams that are winning
- 17:32Speaker 3: overcome not scoring on the big play and score in
- 17:35Speaker 3: that moment. And in the NFL, you're not putting the
- 17:38Speaker 3: game away at that point. But boy, you're making a lot.
- 17:40Speaker 4: Of well, I mean the Texans didn't, right. I mean,
- 17:42Speaker 4: the Texans got the big twenty seven yard play to
- 17:44Speaker 4: Nico Collins, and then they went and put it in
- 17:46Speaker 4: the end zone the first and goal inside the five
- 17:49Speaker 4: yard line. They moved their way down when they needed it,
- 17:53Speaker 4: they got it done. That's the difference in the game.
- 17:55Speaker 1: On that same drive, Trevor going for on fourth and one,
- 17:57Speaker 1: Doug makes the call they're going to go for it
- 17:59Speaker 1: on fourth and they get the quarterback drawn and it
- 18:02Speaker 1: gets stuffed right there.
- 18:04Speaker 2: Where were you on it?
- 18:05Speaker 1: I wasn't surprised I went for it on fourth down.
- 18:08Speaker 1: Maybe a little surprised at what they chose to do
- 18:11Speaker 1: on it.
- 18:12Speaker 3: You know, if I.
- 18:15Speaker 1: Guess if it works, then you're not surprised, then you're
- 18:16Speaker 1: happy with it.
- 18:17Speaker 3: But the photocosta, he doesn't.
- 18:19Speaker 4: You know, shove Brandon Sheriff into the gap.
- 18:23Speaker 3: Yeah, I was doing to not you shove, but yeah
- 18:25Speaker 3: throw then it probably works and he walks in. So
- 18:30Speaker 3: conceptually the play probably should have worked.
- 18:35Speaker 4: I I knew Doug was gonna go for I knew
- 18:40Speaker 4: he was going to go for it right, just like
- 18:41Speaker 4: I knew two years ago he was going to go
- 18:43Speaker 4: for the two point conversion. He wasn't going to try
- 18:45Speaker 4: and coax his team in a losing streak to win.
- 18:47Speaker 4: He was going to go for the win. However, you know,
- 18:50Speaker 4: if you're up six, you get the ball back with
- 18:52Speaker 4: three fifty one left to play. Now you just need
- 18:54Speaker 4: to drive for a field goal, and now you make
- 18:56Speaker 4: it a nine point game. That's good strategy. Chasing points
- 19:00Speaker 4: sometimes doesn't always work. Not on the first play of
- 19:03Speaker 4: the fourth quarter. I think, with my team not playing well,
- 19:06Speaker 4: my quarterback not playing well, I kicked the field goal.
- 19:09Speaker 4: I trust my defense, which by that way had held
- 19:12Speaker 4: the Texans to what fifteen yards in the third quarter.
- 19:16Speaker 4: I'm probably playing the more conservative angle there.
- 19:19Speaker 3: I've always said I would kick in a lot of
- 19:22Speaker 3: the situations where Doug goes for it. But I sort
- 19:25Speaker 3: of all this two years ago. This is who he's
- 19:29Speaker 3: gonna be. So I'll play devil's advocate and say you're
- 19:32Speaker 3: up three, You've just had the fifty eight yard or
- 19:35Speaker 3: where for a moment for your team was like, you're
- 19:38Speaker 3: gonna clinch it. I wonder if he wasn't thinking we're
- 19:41Speaker 3: gonna be deflated either way, so we need to get
- 19:44Speaker 3: points here. I may have been the thinking. Again, I'm
- 19:47Speaker 3: a old school guy. I kick, but I think it
- 19:49Speaker 3: may have been his thinking.
- 19:50Speaker 4: And I do know how he is, and so I
- 19:51Speaker 4: fully expected that he was gonna do that. He wants
- 19:53Speaker 4: to go for the win, and if they score, everyone
- 19:56Speaker 4: celebrates him. He knows this right and they don't, so
- 19:59Speaker 4: you questioning him. That's the nature of the game.
- 20:02Speaker 1: Let's go that final drive with the Texans getting the
- 20:04Speaker 1: ball back a little less than two minutes to go,
- 20:06Speaker 1: Nico Collins that big catch we've alluded to, and then
- 20:09Speaker 1: also the Google Wallet touchdowns. It's frustrating because I felt
- 20:13Speaker 1: like when they got the ball, you were like, they're
- 20:15Speaker 1: gonna go score a touchdown, and having that feeling having
- 20:18Speaker 1: a quarterback and an offense that you trust is something
- 20:21Speaker 1: you want to have. And I just didn't feel that
- 20:23Speaker 1: when the Jaguars had it with you know what, less
- 20:25Speaker 1: than four minutes left and they just needed a first
- 20:27Speaker 1: down or two to kind of run the clock down.
- 20:29Speaker 1: But when the Texans got it, you were like, they're
- 20:30Speaker 1: going to go score right now.
- 20:31Speaker 3: Well, it's a fair feeling. And I had the feeling
- 20:34Speaker 3: as well. And that's a feeling you get when you're
- 20:37Speaker 3: around a team has lost nine again. Yeah, so you
- 20:40Speaker 3: just sort of feel like, here we go again. I
- 20:43Speaker 3: think it's probably human nature that that creeps into the
- 20:46Speaker 3: players just a bit. You need a win to snap
- 20:50Speaker 3: out of it. And I wish I had more. I
- 20:53Speaker 3: keep saying that I wish I had more, But that's
- 20:56Speaker 3: how it feels.
- 20:57Speaker 4: So that's why I can't add anything. I except that
- 21:01Speaker 4: the defensive played had kept the Texans off the scoreboard
- 21:05Speaker 4: the entire second half, and they gave the ball back
- 21:08Speaker 4: with three point fifty one left to play to the
- 21:11Speaker 4: highest paid player. And I know people want to but
- 21:14Speaker 4: the elite franchise quarterback thinking we've done our job. Now
- 21:17Speaker 4: they've got to go back out there and stop them again.
- 21:20Speaker 4: Not sure they had enough gas.
- 21:21Speaker 3: Well did it multiple times?
- 21:22Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 21:23Speaker 3: Like five series in the second half where you force
- 21:25Speaker 3: a punt, and I think about it. The offense had
- 21:28Speaker 3: one touchdown and a couple of misses. Ever been a
- 21:32Speaker 3: team would tell you there were ample opportunities. To think game,
- 21:36Speaker 3: the way the league is structured now, offense centric ample opportunities.
- 21:41Speaker 3: The defense did more enough to win.
- 21:42Speaker 4: They broke surf, right, You've always said that you got
- 21:45Speaker 4: to break serf here and there. They broke serve with
- 21:47Speaker 4: three fifty one left to play, and that's the moment
- 21:50Speaker 4: the light was shining, go win and they couldn't.
- 21:53Speaker 3: And there's been some like I didn't feel it during
- 21:56Speaker 3: the game. There's been some people talking about, well they
- 21:58Speaker 3: should have run when they had the ball with three
- 22:01Speaker 3: fifty one. They ran on first down, and I don't
- 22:05Speaker 3: think the two play calls we're you know, in this
- 22:09Speaker 3: day and age, you could have drained clock, but two minutes.
- 22:15Speaker 3: If they drained clock, could get the ball back with
- 22:17Speaker 3: two minutes left. It's hard to play drain clock in
- 22:22Speaker 3: that situation. In this day and age, You've got to
- 22:25Speaker 3: complete some passages to keep the chains moving and the
- 22:28Speaker 3: clock moving. So I don't necessarily think play call in
- 22:31Speaker 3: that situation was negligent, whatever word you're looking for. I
- 22:36Speaker 3: thought it was okay in that situation.
- 22:38Speaker 4: They just weren't efficient, right right. They didn't execute.
- 22:41Speaker 2: They did not execute.
- 22:42Speaker 1: We're gonna hear Doug's thoughts on play calling coming up
- 22:45Speaker 1: after the break, and we'll give you our hot takes
- 22:46Speaker 1: as well.
- 22:47Speaker 2: Here on Jags.
- 22:48Speaker 1: I am Jags fansf we want customized Dagmarsh furniture free
- 22:59Speaker 1: home checkout, dip about all the customizable options. That chair
- 23:02Speaker 1: is furniture for fans.
- 23:07Speaker 3: Is there any chance you take the headset over?
- 23:10Speaker 4: It's just change this thing up.
- 23:12Speaker 6: For what I thought he'd called a great game. We
- 23:17Speaker 6: as coaches, we can't make the We can't go out
- 23:18Speaker 6: there and make the plays.
- 23:19Speaker 3: Right.
- 23:19Speaker 6: It's a two way street. So you know, you guys
- 23:23Speaker 6: can sit here and point the finger all you want,
- 23:24Speaker 6: and that's fine. Point it right at me. I can
- 23:26Speaker 6: take it, Okay, I can take it. So whatever you
- 23:31Speaker 6: wanna ask me, say whatever, right, go ahead.
- 23:35Speaker 1: You can.
- 23:35Speaker 4: You can tell us that you're introductory news conference a
- 23:37Speaker 4: couple of years ago.
- 23:38Speaker 5: If you not if it's not working, if it's not
- 23:40Speaker 5: in rhythm, whether it's your plays or not that you've.
- 23:43Speaker 3: Hand off the play calling.
- 23:44Speaker 4: Uh, I mean, is it just.
- 23:46Speaker 6: One of those Maybe it's just a voids a confidence
- 23:49Speaker 6: you guys were cooking when you were doing it to
- 23:50Speaker 6: look back in twenty two. Yeah, sure, okay, I'll take
- 23:55Speaker 6: it into consideration.
- 23:57Speaker 1: Dug Peterson weigh in on the play calling questions after
- 24:01Speaker 1: the game.
- 24:01Speaker 2: John, you were there.
- 24:03Speaker 3: It was a tense terse press conference. Tense terse press
- 24:07Speaker 3: conferences of what you get when you're on Ford. But look,
- 24:12Speaker 3: the play calling questions aren't gonna stop. It's the reality.
- 24:16Speaker 3: Doug sees it one way, observer to see it another way.
- 24:21Speaker 4: Look, I never go to the play calling thing because
- 24:23Speaker 4: I think it's the low hanging fruit. I'll give you
- 24:24Speaker 4: the best example of it. As much as I didn't
- 24:27Speaker 4: want them to go for it on the first play
- 24:29Speaker 4: of the fourth quarter, the play call wasn't the problem there.
- 24:32Speaker 4: Brandon Sheriff got whipped fully Fundacossi whipped him, put him
- 24:35Speaker 4: in the middle and shoved it down. And then Trevor
- 24:38Speaker 4: couldn't get to the big gap because he didn't see it.
- 24:40Speaker 4: At least I think he didn't see it.
- 24:41Speaker 3: Let's think about Yeah, Christian Kirk running wide open and
- 24:44Speaker 3: Ryan Thomas running wide open. Nice call on the fifty
- 24:47Speaker 3: eight yard run. By the way, you're third and three.
- 24:51Speaker 3: If that gets stuffed, oh you're an idiot. If it works,
- 24:53Speaker 3: nobody thinks about the fact that it was a good
- 24:55Speaker 3: play call, So which is.
- 24:56Speaker 4: Why play calling is such a misnomer.
- 24:58Speaker 3: Right, but it's a topic. Oh it's good. It's not
- 25:01Speaker 3: going to not be a topic.
- 25:02Speaker 4: Well, because it's what people see, and most people don't
- 25:04Speaker 4: go back and watch the tape, watch the video and see, oh, well,
- 25:09Speaker 4: if he just makes this block he scores, maybe that
- 25:12Speaker 4: wasn't a bad play call. You can't expect people are
- 25:14Speaker 4: going to do that. So play calling isn't going to
- 25:16Speaker 4: go away. And Doug could make it go away by
- 25:18Speaker 4: saying it's finny, it's all on me, which he kind
- 25:21Speaker 4: of did yesterday. But this whole play calling thing has
- 25:24Speaker 4: been because he has kept it oblique.
- 25:28Speaker 2: Yeah, yes, making into a bigger thing that need to be.
- 25:31Speaker 2: I agree.
- 25:31Speaker 1: All right, we got our firehouse hot takes for you today, Brian,
- 25:35Speaker 1: what's your hot take?
- 25:36Speaker 5: You up?
- 25:36Speaker 2: First?
- 25:37Speaker 4: Ventrel Miller made his first NFL start yesterday, and look,
- 25:41Speaker 4: he should stay in the lineup even when Foy a
- 25:43Speaker 4: Lua Khun comes. I think he made more plays in
- 25:46Speaker 4: one game than I saw from Devin Lloyd in four games.
- 25:50Speaker 4: I get it. Devin Lloyd's the first round pick, He's
- 25:51Speaker 4: six three to forty. He runs, he's a good player.
- 25:54Speaker 4: But Ventrel Miller is instinctual. That's his first start, he
- 25:58Speaker 4: made eleven tackles. I would argue John, with respect to
- 26:01Speaker 4: Ray Robertson Harrison is big sack that Ventro Miller was
- 26:05Speaker 4: the best player on defense yesterday, and so he's got
- 26:08Speaker 4: to stay in the lineup. He's that talented.
- 26:11Speaker 3: Yeah, I would be hard pressed to say how he
- 26:15Speaker 3: comes out. I think he starts, you know, with Devin
- 26:19Speaker 3: Lloyd this week, and I think once foy he comes back.
- 26:23Speaker 3: You got to keep it. A troll on the field and.
- 26:24Speaker 4: A third round pick who spent his entire rookie year
- 26:27Speaker 4: on I ar with an achilles, and you know as
- 26:29Speaker 4: well as I'm do, there's lots of players who don't
- 26:31Speaker 4: ever recover from the achilles, and.
- 26:32Speaker 3: That's the worst injury these days than the ACLA. So
- 26:35Speaker 3: credit to him for staying with it. And as you said,
- 26:38Speaker 3: a very instinctive player and a guy who clearly, I
- 26:44Speaker 3: think it was Traves Etn after the game, talked about
- 26:46Speaker 3: how much energy they.
- 26:47Speaker 2: Come to they this is a.
- 26:49Speaker 3: Kid who loves being on the field, loves being in
- 26:52Speaker 3: the moment. Keep using that word the moment, but I
- 26:56Speaker 3: think the moment for that instinctive, care free guy. Maybe
- 27:03Speaker 3: guy they need in the field right now.
- 27:04Speaker 4: By the way, a part of a draft class. Anton
- 27:06Speaker 4: Harrison played better yesterday. Tank Bixby had the big run.
- 27:09Speaker 4: Brenton Strange made plays, Entrel Miller made plays, Tyler Lacy
- 27:13Speaker 4: was on the field.
- 27:14Speaker 3: Brent Strange might be the best balker on the team. Yeah, absolutely,
- 27:17Speaker 3: regardless of the physician.
- 27:18Speaker 4: That draft class from a year agost is even though
- 27:19Speaker 4: it's not producing wins, it's producing some hope that this
- 27:23Speaker 4: team can get better.
- 27:24Speaker 2: I think you're seeing some good things from all of them.
- 27:26Speaker 1: Keeping him healthy will be key to keeping him on
- 27:28Speaker 1: the field important going forward. John, what's your hot take
- 27:31Speaker 1: for him?
- 27:31Speaker 3: Well, it's not that hot. Unfortunately, it's just about pride
- 27:36Speaker 3: now until it's not and this is sort of a
- 27:39Speaker 3: double edged sword. Yeah, I gotta play with pride. The
- 27:41Speaker 3: problem is until they win their way back into me
- 27:46Speaker 3: being able to talk about playoffs with a straight face.
- 27:49Speaker 3: All you can really talk about is, hey, guys, you
- 27:50Speaker 3: gotta play with pride. That's not where you want to
- 27:52Speaker 3: be at zero to four. So this is not necessarily
- 27:55Speaker 3: a great hot take for players fans. Look, I don't
- 27:59Speaker 3: want to hear it anymore about what you can do,
- 28:02Speaker 3: what you can say the season. Yeah you can save
- 28:04Speaker 3: the season, but until you go win a few games
- 28:08Speaker 3: and get back into this thing, then it's about pride
- 28:11Speaker 3: and how much you want it, and it will be
- 28:14Speaker 3: tested over the next couple of weeks.
- 28:16Speaker 4: You're at home, your fan base is, pride is wounded, right,
- 28:20Speaker 4: So how about giving them a chance to be proud again?
- 28:22Speaker 4: And Tom Coughlin's going into the pride of the Jaguars
- 28:24Speaker 4: on Sunday, the throwback uniforms that everybody was so excited about,
- 28:29Speaker 4: you know, how about giving this this crowd on Sunday
- 28:31Speaker 4: and opportunity to enjoy the moment. They haven't had much.
- 28:34Speaker 2: Of that this year, if not.
- 28:36Speaker 1: And I think at a point you have to hate
- 28:38Speaker 1: losing more than yeah, we want to win, but you
- 28:40Speaker 1: need to hate where you're at right now and do
- 28:42Speaker 1: everything you can to get out of that. And I
- 28:44Speaker 1: think that's part of what we're dealing with is now.
- 28:46Speaker 3: I thought that yesterday.
- 28:47Speaker 2: I think they good energy.
- 28:50Speaker 3: Unfortunately, sometimes it's a long season. All these games are tough.
- 28:55Speaker 3: You have to do it all the time and in
- 28:57Speaker 3: every moment, and then the percentage to start playing away, yes,
- 29:01Speaker 3: say they play with pride again to not making the
- 29:04Speaker 3: big plays and the big moments bit them and spend
- 29:07Speaker 3: that sort of season.
- 29:08Speaker 1: Mine's a little more grander scheme. I think things are
- 29:10Speaker 1: at owing for right now. Changes are coming, whether we
- 29:13Speaker 1: like them or not. And I just mean that in
- 29:15Speaker 1: the sense of its national football. If you don't win,
- 29:17Speaker 1: which we've heard shod Con wants to win now, there
- 29:20Speaker 1: will be changes. I don't know when they're going to
- 29:21Speaker 1: be what they're going to be exactly, but you know,
- 29:24Speaker 1: we're locked into Trevor, we're locked into certain people, but
- 29:26Speaker 1: everybody else it's like, you know, you need to kind
- 29:29Speaker 1: of go out there and earn your position, to earn
- 29:30Speaker 1: your spot, and find a way to make this work
- 29:33Speaker 1: because we're not going to see.
- 29:35Speaker 2: This same group of people again next year after this.
- 29:37Speaker 4: I wouldn't be surprised and I'm just guessing here. If
- 29:41Speaker 4: the play calling situation isn't ironed out this week, right,
- 29:45Speaker 4: the owner said he wanted it clearly. Doug is tired
- 29:48Speaker 4: of dealing with that question. You can make it go away,
- 29:51Speaker 4: that would be a simple one. I'm taking the play
- 29:53Speaker 4: calling back and it's now on me, so let's just
- 29:57Speaker 4: focus it all here. I think he's had a hand
- 29:59Speaker 4: in the play calling all alone. All right. The two
- 30:01Speaker 4: men are of such a close relationship that they don't
- 30:04Speaker 4: work absent of each other on the offensive side of things.
- 30:08Speaker 4: But I think you could throw this out there, right,
- 30:11Speaker 4: it's the sacrificial issue. Throw it out there, Doug says,
- 30:14Speaker 4: it's me. Stop pointing to Press. I got this. I
- 30:17Speaker 4: need Press to work with the quarterback and get him right.
- 30:20Speaker 3: Yeah, maybe I'm not.
- 30:22Speaker 4: Yeah, Well, if he wants it to go away, that's
- 30:25Speaker 4: what he does.
- 30:26Speaker 1: Sure, that's something we'll keep an eye on this week.
- 30:28Speaker 2: Stay with us here on jag Zam. We'll tell you
- 30:30Speaker 2: what's coming up the rest of the weeks. Before the
- 30:31Speaker 2: Cold Game.
- 30:39Speaker 1: Jag Zam brought to you by Baptist Health, Changing health
- 30:42Speaker 1: Care for Good.
- 30:45Speaker 5: It's frustrating, it's not going our way and we weren't
- 30:47Speaker 5: able to find a way to win this game. We
- 30:48Speaker 5: had some mistakes out there. Yeah, but we just have
- 30:50Speaker 5: to stay together. It's gonna teach us something, it's gonna
- 30:52Speaker 5: prepare us for the future. And stay positive. I mean,
- 30:56Speaker 5: there were things that we did well today and we
- 30:57Speaker 5: just have to do more of it, you know. And
- 30:58Speaker 5: I don't think we need to. You don't need to
- 31:01Speaker 5: blow everything up and start over like we you know,
- 31:04Speaker 5: we got good players, we had, we have a good scheme. Offensively,
- 31:06Speaker 5: we had great things today and we just got to
- 31:09Speaker 5: consistently make those plays. You know. I thought we had
- 31:11Speaker 5: a lot of opportunities. So just keep keep working. That's
- 31:14Speaker 5: the that's the message.
- 31:15Speaker 2: To keep working this week, keep working this week.
- 31:19Speaker 1: It's going to be the Colts game this weekend, John
- 31:21Speaker 1: but not Knna. Anthony Richardson looked like.
- 31:23Speaker 2: It might be Joe Flacco.
- 31:24Speaker 3: Yeah, well he's capable. And look, just to clarify here,
- 31:34Speaker 3: you can win with Trevor. They've shown that they were
- 31:38Speaker 3: nine and eighth the last two years. Could have been better,
- 31:39Speaker 3: it could have been worse. Whatever, you can win with it.
- 31:44Speaker 3: It's not I'm getting people, oh he can't do it.
- 31:47Speaker 3: Isn't that you can. He's just got to do.
- 31:49Speaker 4: Look, I he is in the center of the blueprint
- 31:54Speaker 4: for this franchise, and and the salary cap now underscores
- 31:57Speaker 4: not more than ever. It's more important right now to
- 32:01Speaker 4: figure out how to get him back playing at a
- 32:03Speaker 4: level that you can win and that you do win.
- 32:06Speaker 4: That's the most important thing. He is this quarterback. He
- 32:10Speaker 4: is this franchisees quarterback and will be. He's got talent,
- 32:14Speaker 4: he can play. What's going on? Figure it out? You
- 32:17Speaker 4: got to get him back.
- 32:20Speaker 2: What do we have going on for the Colts game?
- 32:21Speaker 2: For Tom?
- 32:23Speaker 4: I actually sat with Tom and had a wonderful conversation
- 32:27Speaker 4: that could have gone on for hours. It's about thirty
- 32:30Speaker 4: minutes that will debut point this week, and I'm looking
- 32:34Speaker 4: forward to being on the stage with him at halftime
- 32:36Speaker 4: to introduce him. I think I introduce Shod who introduces him?
- 32:40Speaker 4: But to me who was here in the early days,
- 32:42Speaker 4: John was here too. Do have gone through all of
- 32:45Speaker 4: that with him. I'm really excited and I hope people.
- 32:48Speaker 2: Will come out absolutely a special day.
- 32:51Speaker 3: I avoid to it. Yeah, why is er?
- 32:53Speaker 1: We'll see you a little bit later on this week.
- 32:54Speaker 1: We'll look ahead later this week at the Colts game of.
