- 0:16Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome everybody to episode sixty four of Cards
- 0:19Speaker 1: and Categories. I am Mike Coolard of Rasball, joined as
- 0:23Speaker 1: always by my very good friend Jeremy Brewer from Rasball,
- 0:26Speaker 1: and you want to start your apology to her now
- 0:29Speaker 1: to all of the Tigers and Padres fans out there,
- 0:31Speaker 1: because the Jinx the curse is back, because you laid
- 0:34Speaker 1: it on them thick last week.
- 0:36Speaker 2: It was bad. It was very bad. I espouse my
- 0:40Speaker 2: desires of a Padres Tiger's world series in well, that
- 0:44Speaker 2: ain't happening. It's definitely it's not possible whatsoever at this point.
- 0:50Speaker 2: It is far from from possible because those two are
- 0:54Speaker 2: out out as can be. So I will have to
- 0:57Speaker 2: restate my world serious predictions because I couldn't even I
- 1:01Speaker 2: couldn't even get to the next round of my teams.
- 1:04Speaker 2: So I apologize to all of our wonderful listeners who
- 1:08Speaker 2: craved the Padre Ciger series like I did, and I
- 1:10Speaker 2: just I dropped the ball.
- 1:11Speaker 1: I apologize, Yeah, I mean they tried to push it
- 1:14Speaker 1: for you. They both pushed their DS's to five game series.
- 1:18Speaker 1: And we are speaking on the evening of October sixteenth.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Our main segment that we're going to get into later
- 1:25Speaker 1: is the release of twenty twenty four Tops Update series,
- 1:28Speaker 1: which is a mega release this year, so we'll get
- 1:31Speaker 1: into all the details there. But yeah, let's chat playoffs
- 1:34Speaker 1: for a little bit, because we did have both the
- 1:37Speaker 1: Cleveland Detroit and San Diego LA series go to five games,
- 1:41Speaker 1: which I thought was pretty thrilling. And it's been just
- 1:45Speaker 1: a really fantastic playoff series postseason overall so far that
- 1:50Speaker 1: like those game five certainly were no exception, and those
- 1:54Speaker 1: series in fact themselves that like you know, Detroit I
- 1:58Speaker 1: think ran out of gas a little bit, but San
- 2:00Speaker 1: Diego was hanging with Los Angeles until they ran into
- 2:04Speaker 1: the behemoth that is the Dodgers pitching staff. Apparently with
- 2:07Speaker 1: those thirty three straight shutout innings that they had, as
- 2:11Speaker 1: they really have looked much better from the pitching perspective
- 2:15Speaker 1: than I would have ever thought. But what really stood
- 2:18Speaker 1: out for you in those division series, either from San
- 2:22Speaker 1: Diego LA or Detroit Cleveland or was another one that
- 2:25Speaker 1: really stood out? Since we last stocked last week.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I think you actually hit the piece
- 2:29Speaker 2: that I was most intrigued. It was the Dodgers pitching.
- 2:32Speaker 2: I think when we talked just last week. We were
- 2:34Speaker 2: sitting here, like, well, the Dodgers, like they've got a
- 2:37Speaker 2: little pitching but just seems to be so spotty you
- 2:39Speaker 2: can't really rely on it. And then they just rattled
- 2:42Speaker 2: off an unbelievable stretch. And like the Padres, they're a
- 2:47Speaker 2: good offensive team, and that just fell off the cliff.
- 2:50Speaker 2: And I don't think it was the Potters forgot how
- 2:52Speaker 2: to hit. I think the Dodgers were just unbelievable on
- 2:56Speaker 2: the mound and they've kind of carried that through. So
- 2:59Speaker 2: that makes them a very very interesting team, very dangerous
- 3:03Speaker 2: team as we start to come through. So it'll be
- 3:07Speaker 2: interesting to see if they can keep that up. But
- 3:09Speaker 2: that's that's kind of I think the hope is that
- 3:12Speaker 2: they were able to maintain that. Now. They didn't quite
- 3:15Speaker 2: get there in Game two against the Mets, and they
- 3:18Speaker 2: they gave up a seven spot there and that was
- 3:21Speaker 2: a little unfortunate for the bullpen game that they tried
- 3:26Speaker 2: to try to run out there. But you know, just
- 3:30Speaker 2: running running tonight looks like, you know, they're gonna try
- 3:34Speaker 2: to give it a go with Walker Bueller and see
- 3:36Speaker 2: if he can keep the magic happening. But that's really
- 3:39Speaker 2: big thing for me is the Dodgers look to be
- 3:41Speaker 2: more of a complete team than I was expecting. I'm
- 3:45Speaker 2: still gonna say I'm not quite sure that I believe
- 3:47Speaker 2: it's gonna hold true the rest of the series. I
- 3:49Speaker 2: don't a seven game series. I think it's gonna be tough.
- 3:52Speaker 2: I looked at a little bit more of a hot streak
- 3:54Speaker 2: than a you know, renaissance in the middle of the playoffs.
- 3:57Speaker 2: So how about you what what sticks out to you
- 4:00Speaker 2: as those division series wrapped up?
- 4:02Speaker 1: I mean, even getting into today, I mean, it does
- 4:05Speaker 1: look like the Yankees are rolling to this thing that
- 4:09Speaker 1: there doesn't seem to be too much competition in their way.
- 4:12Speaker 1: In the al As, I mean, the Royals put up
- 4:15Speaker 1: a little bit of a fight, but at the end
- 4:16Speaker 1: of the day, that offense couldn't sustain them through that series.
- 4:20Speaker 1: And then they're just man handling the Guardians right now
- 4:23Speaker 1: that you want to talk about how quickly fortunes can
- 4:27Speaker 1: change in terms of pitching staffs, on the flip side
- 4:29Speaker 1: of the Dodgers turning into gold, we have the Guardians
- 4:32Speaker 1: just totally falling apart. That like the starting pitching is
- 4:36Speaker 1: even in worse shape than the Dodgers. That bullpen has
- 4:40Speaker 1: been just ground into dust by Stephen vote Between having
- 4:45Speaker 1: to go five games with the Tigers, I think was
- 4:47Speaker 1: the worst case scenario for the Guardians. That the only
- 4:50Speaker 1: reason the way that they could have taken out the
- 4:52Speaker 1: Yankees is if they had you know, swept or even
- 4:56Speaker 1: maybe even four games, if they had beat Detroit in
- 4:58Speaker 1: four games, they would have stood shot to rest that
- 5:01Speaker 1: bullpen a little bit. But it just they're running on
- 5:04Speaker 1: fumes and that offense needed to rely on a great
- 5:09Speaker 1: bullpen to sustain them to any sort of substantial run.
- 5:12Speaker 1: So it does look like it's kind of the Yankees
- 5:15Speaker 1: year between, especially the Judge Soto of it all. They've
- 5:19Speaker 1: got the best frontline pitching, our boy Luke Weaver, who
- 5:22Speaker 1: I mean a little behind the scenes every time we
- 5:25Speaker 1: get onto chat like we're just astounded by our Luke
- 5:28Speaker 1: Weaver pieces taking off on prices. We're moving them piece
- 5:32Speaker 1: by piece on eBay because I've got a lot of
- 5:35Speaker 1: Cardinals rookie cards that have just sat in boxes of his.
- 5:39Speaker 1: The Yankees, I just it does look like they're gonna
- 5:42Speaker 1: be tough to stop because I think they're gonna roll
- 5:45Speaker 1: through Cleveland here pretty quickly, and I don't think that
- 5:48Speaker 1: this Dodgers Mets series is going to be wrapped up
- 5:51Speaker 1: anytime soon.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you're right at your point, Luke Weaver
- 5:55Speaker 2: love it from my card collection is very much shrinking
- 5:58Speaker 2: card cruxes at this point. Thank you you were paying
- 6:00Speaker 2: for tops update. But it is definitely a looking like
- 6:05Speaker 2: a Memarian rivera Luke Weaver on the back of that
- 6:08Speaker 2: bullpen which they've struggled to kind of all year to
- 6:11Speaker 2: agree with Clay Holmes and trying to figure out what
- 6:13Speaker 2: they're going to do there. And if this gets them
- 6:15Speaker 2: to rest, and then that means you can just throw
- 6:17Speaker 2: Garrett Cole three times potentially in the world series like
- 6:21Speaker 2: uh oh yeah, exactly that. That's that's enough like that
- 6:25Speaker 2: that that works pretty gosh started well, And they've probably
- 6:28Speaker 2: got a pretty dangerous teams otherwise they don't. They don't.
- 6:32Speaker 2: They can live on the hitting or the pitching, and
- 6:35Speaker 2: when they get the best of both worlds, they are
- 6:38Speaker 2: really going to be dangerous. So I think you're right.
- 6:40Speaker 2: I didn't want to believe it the Evil Empire striking
- 6:44Speaker 2: back here, but it does look like they're going to
- 6:46Speaker 2: make it a pretty quick work of the Guardians and
- 6:49Speaker 2: come through. We may have just jinxed them because that's
- 6:51Speaker 2: just how we roll on this podcast.
- 6:53Speaker 1: I mean, lots of people want that out there that
- 6:55Speaker 1: you know, give a little hope to the Guardians and
- 6:58Speaker 1: to Although I'm tired of seeing those games in Cleveland
- 7:01Speaker 1: with all the Chief Wahoos, it's a it's a little
- 7:03Speaker 1: over time for that trend to be done. That. Yeah,
- 7:06Speaker 1: if you are out there still sporting Chief Wahoo gear
- 7:09Speaker 1: and you're listening to this pod, I don't that cross
- 7:12Speaker 1: section that ven diagram is not very large, I don't think,
- 7:15Speaker 1: but if it is, please consider moving on. It's a
- 7:18Speaker 1: it's been a little while since that has been out
- 7:20Speaker 1: of vogue. But so I think we book got the
- 7:23Speaker 1: Yankees rolling into the World Series. What do you how
- 7:26Speaker 1: do you analyze this NLCS between the Mets and the Dodgers.
- 7:30Speaker 1: It's been a star studded series in terms of everybody
- 7:34Speaker 1: in New York and everybody in LA And before the
- 7:37Speaker 1: game tonight, in the pregame, they had like Jerry Seinfeld
- 7:39Speaker 1: doing the intro and it's a nervy and fun It's
- 7:43Speaker 1: like a heavyweight boxing match that like, I think this
- 7:46Speaker 1: is exactly the type of series that Major League Baseball
- 7:48Speaker 1: has needed for a long time, just to kind of
- 7:52Speaker 1: the game has become so much better since the pitchclock,
- 7:55Speaker 1: And what better way to like kind of thrust that
- 7:59Speaker 1: forward into just the greater American side geist than two
- 8:03Speaker 1: major teams like the Match and the Dodgers. But where
- 8:06Speaker 1: do you how do you see this playing out over
- 8:07Speaker 1: the next few days to you know, a week or so.
- 8:11Speaker 2: Yeah, this is a is a tough one because like
- 8:13Speaker 2: I go back and I look and like, I just
- 8:15Speaker 2: this will sound counter twit to like I'm still don't
- 8:17Speaker 2: know if I believe in the Dodgers pitching, Like I
- 8:20Speaker 2: just don't know if I believe in it. And I
- 8:22Speaker 2: think that them from an offensive standpoint, I think the
- 8:24Speaker 2: Dodgers are a little stronger, but not significantly stronger, And
- 8:28Speaker 2: so I keep going to like, I feel like the
- 8:31Speaker 2: Mets are the team to beat in this series, and
- 8:34Speaker 2: it's not by a large large margin. I just think
- 8:36Speaker 2: that they are. And I feel like they're also gelling
- 8:39Speaker 2: as a team, which like the intangibles in the playoffs,
- 8:41Speaker 2: like sometimes that's all it takes. I think Lindor has
- 8:44Speaker 2: just been gonna be fantastic and continue to caere that through.
- 8:48Speaker 2: You know, I think we're seeing Alonso like making his
- 8:51Speaker 2: last plea to to bring the World series here to
- 8:55Speaker 2: to New York. So I'd love to see uh that happen.
- 8:59Speaker 2: And I think it's very very likely we might be
- 9:01Speaker 2: looking at the Subway series here for go back to
- 9:06Speaker 2: good old times. So I'm about you. I think I'm
- 9:09Speaker 2: calling the Mets am I am? I am? I off
- 9:11Speaker 2: my rocker.
- 9:12Speaker 1: No, I mean, I think it is a coin flip.
- 9:14Speaker 1: I think you can make a case for either team.
- 9:17Speaker 1: And I do think that this series is going to
- 9:20Speaker 1: go seven. It's just going to be back and forth
- 9:22Speaker 1: and very nervy. I think I give the Dodgers a
- 9:25Speaker 1: slight advantage at this point, partly because like the Mets,
- 9:29Speaker 1: bullpen has looked that is their weak spot. That if
- 9:33Speaker 1: you can get into that bullpen, and especially if you're
- 9:36Speaker 1: not having to deal too much with David Peterson, you
- 9:39Speaker 1: can put Edwin Diaz into just like some higher stress
- 9:41Speaker 1: situations once you get through some of their starters. As
- 9:45Speaker 1: you know, Luis of Areno has looked pretty decent tonight,
- 9:48Speaker 1: and we had you know, Sean and I kind of
- 9:51Speaker 1: continue his almost cy young like form, once you can
- 9:55Speaker 1: get through that and get into that bullpen, that is
- 9:57Speaker 1: the soft underbelly I think of the Mets, and so
- 10:00Speaker 1: that is where the Dodgers I think can hold up.
- 10:02Speaker 1: And in terms of offense, I think I give the
- 10:05Speaker 1: Dodgers a little bit of an edge there, but it
- 10:07Speaker 1: is closer than you would have thought, partly because I mean,
- 10:10Speaker 1: Francisco Lindor has been playing out of his mind. Freddie
- 10:12Speaker 1: Freeman has obviously still been hobbled with that ankle injury.
- 10:17Speaker 1: But if there's somebody that's really stood out for me
- 10:19Speaker 1: on the Mets, it's been Mark Viento's just he's had
- 10:22Speaker 1: a great second half and has really like vaunted himself
- 10:26Speaker 1: into I think significant like upper echelons of like corner
- 10:32Speaker 1: bats for fantasy, but like it's also going to be
- 10:35Speaker 1: really an ace in the pocket for the Mets as
- 10:38Speaker 1: they go to negotiate with Pete Alonzo in the offseason
- 10:40Speaker 1: that Mark Vantos doesn't belong at third base and it
- 10:43Speaker 1: could be pretty easy to slot him in at first
- 10:45Speaker 1: base going into twenty twenty five.
- 10:47Speaker 2: Yeah, it's he's you know, I think you and I
- 10:49Speaker 2: both have talked about it when he first came out
- 10:51Speaker 2: like there's a lot of hope and dreams kind of there,
- 10:54Speaker 2: and it just didn't seem to be coming together. And
- 10:56Speaker 2: now it's coming together on the big stage, which there's
- 10:58Speaker 2: no better place for it to happen. I mean, I
- 11:02Speaker 2: do think the Mets are gonna do basically everything they
- 11:05Speaker 2: can to keep Alonso around. I think that fan base
- 11:08Speaker 2: will potentially revolt if that's not accomplished. But you know,
- 11:13Speaker 2: a World Series can definitely, you know, lessen any wounds
- 11:17Speaker 2: in that area for sure. So like I said, I
- 11:21Speaker 2: got my money on the on the Mets. We'll see
- 11:23Speaker 2: if it comes through, and you know, maybe I'll just
- 11:27Speaker 2: change my tune later and I for see the results
- 11:29Speaker 2: in Game three.
- 11:30Speaker 1: Yeah, as we chat through Game three tonight, it is
- 11:33Speaker 1: currently two nothing in the second inning, a couple of
- 11:36Speaker 1: little rinky dink runs that looks like Luis Severino because yeah,
- 11:41Speaker 1: where Walker Beeler goes to. Like that's I think gonna
- 11:43Speaker 1: be a big portion of how the Dodgers play out
- 11:46Speaker 1: because we saw how that bullpen game went and it
- 11:51Speaker 1: wasn't great. Part of it too, is like you got
- 11:54Speaker 1: to think if there's another bullpen game, the front office
- 11:57Speaker 1: is already in Dave Roberts's ear just jawn at him
- 12:02Speaker 1: for his handling of that game because they only ended
- 12:04Speaker 1: up losing by three, and like, there were many moments
- 12:07Speaker 1: where they could have come back, and you know, if
- 12:10Speaker 1: he had kept it tighter, made some switches, not ridden
- 12:13Speaker 1: Land and Nac as long, I think, you know, you
- 12:16Speaker 1: could have seen a pathway to the Dodgers even winning
- 12:18Speaker 1: Game two and also maybe ending up in a situation
- 12:21Speaker 1: where you know, they could be meeting the Yankees much
- 12:25Speaker 1: earlier than anticipated.
- 12:28Speaker 2: Yeah, this this is gonna be fun. And if I
- 12:32Speaker 2: had to say I'm cheering for the Subways series, it's
- 12:35Speaker 2: weird to say that at this point in time, but
- 12:37Speaker 2: like I think just the spectacle of it is is
- 12:39Speaker 2: gonna be just insane for everybody to enjoy.
- 12:43Speaker 1: Yeah, I agree, like it it is good fun. I
- 12:45Speaker 1: think either way, it's gonna be a fun world series.
- 12:48Speaker 1: I mean even Dodgers Inkyes, I know it's getting a
- 12:50Speaker 1: lot of kind of gruff on social media that I think,
- 12:53Speaker 1: especially you know, you have these two behemoths of the
- 12:55Speaker 1: sport meeting each other. But like I mean, Judge and
- 12:59Speaker 1: Otani and you got Cole and Yamamoto and just all
- 13:03Speaker 1: the stars and all involved. It is going to be
- 13:07Speaker 1: like a super marquee event. I think the nice thing
- 13:10Speaker 1: is either way, either the Subway series or Dodgers Inkeys.
- 13:14Speaker 1: Of course, we'll be talking in a couple of weeks
- 13:16Speaker 1: after the Guardians rattle off this world series and open
- 13:20Speaker 1: up the hell hole that the Cubs also did back
- 13:22Speaker 1: in twenty sixteen.
- 13:26Speaker 2: I want to correct you, but that's just the way
- 13:29Speaker 2: we this podcast happens. So let's I'm not counting my
- 13:33Speaker 2: chickens Moore the hatch here.
- 13:34Speaker 1: Yes, I agree. Okay, Well, let's get into a few
- 13:37Speaker 1: bits of news and notes that we have before we
- 13:40Speaker 1: dive into tops update. And so we only really have
- 13:44Speaker 1: like two pieces of news. It's been a really quiet
- 13:47Speaker 1: news week since we talked last week. And the first
- 13:50Speaker 1: one is we've been talking about him a lot throughout
- 13:53Speaker 1: the summer, even though he didn't have any significant impact
- 13:56Speaker 1: on the game this year or our fantasy game. And
- 13:59Speaker 1: as Clayton kersh off from the Dodgers, he has announced
- 14:03Speaker 1: that he's coming back in twenty twenty five. So he
- 14:06Speaker 1: missed a significant portion of the season as he was
- 14:10Speaker 1: recovering from his first surgery. I think so the shoulder
- 14:13Speaker 1: surgery was the first time he had gone under the knife,
- 14:17Speaker 1: and he, you know, has he's getting up there in age.
- 14:21Speaker 1: He's he's exactly three hundred and sixty seven days younger
- 14:26Speaker 1: than me, so he's uh thirty six, and so yeah,
- 14:31Speaker 1: he'll be going into his thirty seven aged thirty seven
- 14:34Speaker 1: season next year. But he was shut down at the
- 14:36Speaker 1: end of the year with a bones bur in his toe,
- 14:39Speaker 1: which he hasn't actually had surgery on yet. He got
- 14:42Speaker 1: to think that he's going to be having it soon,
- 14:43Speaker 1: but maybe he's waiting until the end of the playoff run,
- 14:46Speaker 1: so he can you know, hang out during thingsgiving with
- 14:49Speaker 1: a boot on. And what do you think that this
- 14:52Speaker 1: kind of four tends for Kershaw coming back? I don't
- 14:56Speaker 1: even know if I'm gonna ask you, like I guess
- 14:59Speaker 1: i am, because I'm rhetorically already about to put it
- 15:01Speaker 1: out there whether or not. Like the past few off seasons,
- 15:03Speaker 1: it's been a question of whether Kershaw goes to the Dodgers.
- 15:06Speaker 1: The Rangers are retires. I think at this point it's
- 15:09Speaker 1: only Dodgers as long as in town that like, yeah,
- 15:13Speaker 1: it's the Dodgers anywhere else. Yeah, So he's so coming
- 15:17Speaker 1: back to the Dodgers, what do you think he can do?
- 15:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it's you know, it's it's Clayton Kershaw.
- 15:22Speaker 2: Like it's one of those we talk about players that
- 15:26Speaker 2: when they play, they're good and they're great. I think
- 15:28Speaker 2: that's still who Clayton Kershaw is. It's the question of
- 15:32Speaker 2: how much of that do you get? And I, you know,
- 15:36Speaker 2: probably take it onto a little bit of the Max
- 15:38Speaker 2: Scherzer track of stepping back a little bit, but like
- 15:42Speaker 2: stepping back from amazing too great, maybe great, to really
- 15:46Speaker 2: really really good. And I still see Kershaw as that
- 15:50Speaker 2: guy that can go sub three e r A, get
- 15:53Speaker 2: a strikeout per inning, have an incredibly low whip, and
- 15:58Speaker 2: get wins. Like that's that's who he is. He's on
- 16:00Speaker 2: the right team for that. There's no question in my
- 16:02Speaker 2: mind that he has that capability. He said his arm
- 16:04Speaker 2: feels fantastic. What else are you gonna say? I get it.
- 16:07Speaker 2: But like, Kershaw has never been one to like speak
- 16:12Speaker 2: in the media and like really go out in a
- 16:15Speaker 2: limb and say, oh, I'm the best shape in my
- 16:16Speaker 2: life or anything like that. Like he just does his work.
- 16:18Speaker 2: And so for him actually speaking this way, like the
- 16:21Speaker 2: hunger's there. He's still fully in. He's pitching for the
- 16:25Speaker 2: Dodgers next year. He's probably gonna have a full off
- 16:28Speaker 2: season to kind of work himself back. It's just a
- 16:31Speaker 2: matter of how many starts does he get. I think
- 16:33Speaker 2: you pencil them in for fifteen, and anything more than
- 16:37Speaker 2: that you're happy with. And those fifteen are gonna be really,
- 16:39Speaker 2: really good, And I think people are gonna undervalue that.
- 16:44Speaker 2: It just because at the end of the day, it's
- 16:47Speaker 2: hard to find a picture that gets twenty twenty five
- 16:49Speaker 2: starts anymore. And so if he gets fifteen and you
- 16:52Speaker 2: get lucky, you'll be absolutely thrilled. So I'm still still
- 16:58Speaker 2: buying the Clayton Kershaw as long as the price is reasonable.
- 17:03Speaker 2: You know, how about you, are you buying next year
- 17:05Speaker 2: or you're on the sidelines.
- 17:06Speaker 1: Yeah, I think I am, just partly because, like in essence,
- 17:11Speaker 1: he rehabbed that shoulder this year and so that gives
- 17:14Speaker 1: him a lot, you know, another off season here to
- 17:17Speaker 1: work on it. It does depend a little bit, I think,
- 17:20Speaker 1: on how this kind of bone spur situation goes, But
- 17:23Speaker 1: like you said, we might not hear much of it
- 17:25Speaker 1: until spring. And he's also been a guy who just
- 17:28Speaker 1: guts through stuff. That like, considering everything that's gone on
- 17:31Speaker 1: with his back and his shoulder and just how many
- 17:34Speaker 1: innings he's put in for the Dodgers in his career,
- 17:36Speaker 1: it just doesn't seem like a bone spur is going
- 17:39Speaker 1: to hold him back that much. And I do think that, like,
- 17:43Speaker 1: as he got to sit and watch a lot of
- 17:45Speaker 1: this show Heyo Tani fifty to fifty season, got to see, like,
- 17:50Speaker 1: you know, even like the Dodgers this year still rattled
- 17:54Speaker 1: off ninety eight wins with Mookie Betts almost being out
- 17:57Speaker 1: two months, Freddie Freeman just having a really tumultuous year
- 18:00Speaker 1: between his son having a medical issue and having the
- 18:05Speaker 1: broken fingers and having the twisted ankle. The Dodgers never
- 18:09Speaker 1: found a shortstop, and so like there's a lot of
- 18:13Speaker 1: like flaws on this ninety eight win Dodgers team that
- 18:15Speaker 1: it's really hard. I think it's gonna be hard for
- 18:18Speaker 1: Kershaw to walk away from that as he sees everything
- 18:21Speaker 1: that he's been working for in la is certainly coming together,
- 18:25Speaker 1: partly on the shoulders of show Heyo Tani. But like,
- 18:28Speaker 1: I just don't see how this team isn't a can tender,
- 18:32Speaker 1: like automatic CS team even maybe even automatic World Series team,
- 18:36Speaker 1: although they should have been that for a few years.
- 18:39Speaker 1: For the next five.
- 18:40Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I mean you have a rotation next year
- 18:43Speaker 2: of Yamamoto, you know, fully integrated in the MLB glass
- 18:47Speaker 2: now healthy, ish Otani back pitching, Kershaw pitching like it's
- 18:57Speaker 2: I'm missing somebody, I'm sure, but like it's it's gonna
- 19:02Speaker 2: be really really tough. And if some of those hitters
- 19:05Speaker 2: who've had bad years they just haven't been like their
- 19:09Speaker 2: their selves come to fruition. Yeah, it's gonna be pretty
- 19:14Speaker 2: pretty hard to to look away from the Dodgers, even
- 19:17Speaker 2: if they don't make upgrades, Like if they just get healthy,
- 19:20Speaker 2: it's it's gonna be dangerous, let alone if they make
- 19:23Speaker 2: some some additions.
- 19:24Speaker 1: Yeah, and I mean you there's a lot of talent
- 19:27Speaker 1: on that back end, Like Gonsolin will be back for sure.
- 19:32Speaker 1: We will probably eventually get dustin to me, but not
- 19:35Speaker 1: for a while. River Ryan will not be back, and
- 19:40Speaker 1: Devin Stone isn't in the playoffs right now, so he
- 19:43Speaker 1: was pretty solid for them in the regular season. He
- 19:45Speaker 1: should be back. I have a feeling they might bring
- 19:48Speaker 1: back Flaherty, like why not, Like it does seem like
- 19:52Speaker 1: he's been pitching. Well there he's from so Cow And
- 19:55Speaker 1: then you got like, you know, guys like Jackson Ferris
- 19:58Speaker 1: coming through.
- 19:59Speaker 2: Bobby pretty good, well he was.
- 20:02Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, who knows he does need an off
- 20:04Speaker 1: season like that is the classic guy who needs an
- 20:06Speaker 1: off season. But I'm sure they'll find some way to
- 20:11Speaker 1: fill in the back end of that. Maybe they even like,
- 20:13Speaker 1: you know, convert Brent Honeywell or Anthony Bandon into just
- 20:16Speaker 1: some sort of devastating, vibining guy. But it'll be interesting
- 20:21Speaker 1: to see where Kershi ends up in his rehabs. And yeah,
- 20:26Speaker 1: we'll get into more, I think once we get into
- 20:27Speaker 1: draft season and start getting some ADP data. All right,
- 20:31Speaker 1: next bit of news that we have is it just
- 20:34Speaker 1: dropped a little bit before we got into this pod tonight,
- 20:37Speaker 1: that there are news reports that Jerry Reinsdorf is open
- 20:42Speaker 1: to selling the White Sox and it does look like
- 20:44Speaker 1: one of the league contenders that would be coming in
- 20:47Speaker 1: is a Dave Stewart led ownership group that has been
- 20:51Speaker 1: in talks a lot to try to bring a team
- 20:53Speaker 1: to Nashville. I will say that I am extremely skeptical
- 20:59Speaker 1: of this that Jerry is kind of the classic like
- 21:02Speaker 1: fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame
- 21:05Speaker 1: on me. And then like I'm not going to be
- 21:08Speaker 1: fooled by any news that kind of goes through this
- 21:11Speaker 1: process that it does seem a little bit more of
- 21:13Speaker 1: like I mean, Ardy Marino has been doing this every
- 21:16Speaker 1: off season for what like three or four years. Like
- 21:19Speaker 1: I don't know if like Jerry's just trying to like
- 21:21Speaker 1: find some good will and sell a few tickets or
- 21:24Speaker 1: if he actually is serious about this. But what do
- 21:27Speaker 1: you read into this situation? Do you think that Jerry
- 21:30Speaker 1: is serious about moving on from the White Sox and
- 21:34Speaker 1: do you think it's possible that they could be on
- 21:36Speaker 1: their way to Nashville with the new ownership group.
- 21:39Speaker 2: Well, I've been to divide this one between what I
- 21:41Speaker 2: think is gonna happen, what should happen. Okay, what what
- 21:44Speaker 2: should happen is yes you should sell, and yes they
- 21:46Speaker 2: should move to Nashville. I think that's a pretty pretty
- 21:49Speaker 2: clear one for me, and not just because I'd like
- 21:51Speaker 2: to go watch a team in Nashville. I think that
- 21:53Speaker 2: would actually be pretty pretty fun. I think with city
- 21:55Speaker 2: that can actually a support a major league team, I
- 21:58Speaker 2: know that I get to hear about you complain about
- 22:00Speaker 2: it for the next year on the podcast as well,
- 22:01Speaker 2: and that'd just be fantastic for all of us. I
- 22:04Speaker 2: apologize to many of our listeners, but but it's Jerry
- 22:08Speaker 2: and he's just wasn't in the news the last few
- 22:11Speaker 2: weeks and he just felt like talking about it. Because
- 22:17Speaker 2: the Twins are talking about it, like other teams are
- 22:22Speaker 2: looking at it, we might as well be in the
- 22:23Speaker 2: conversation too, because what's better than selling a team that
- 22:26Speaker 2: won two games this year like it's just it's just
- 22:29Speaker 2: not it's just not logical, doesn't make any sense, Nothing's
- 22:33Speaker 2: gonna happen here. I'd like to say that's a bold statement.
- 22:36Speaker 2: I don't think it is. This. This is totally just
- 22:41Speaker 2: off season fodder for the White Sox. So you're the
- 22:44Speaker 2: residant White Sox expert. Tell me where I'm wrong. I
- 22:47Speaker 2: feel like this is just too too clear.
- 22:49Speaker 1: Yeah, I agree, I just I don't see any way
- 22:52Speaker 1: how he doesn't just hand it down to his sons
- 22:55Speaker 1: and like, yeah, on top of it too, like the
- 23:01Speaker 1: Dave Stewart group, Like I don't know why this would
- 23:05Speaker 1: be your doorway or like your entry way into getting
- 23:10Speaker 1: a team in Nashville, Like, the market in Chicago is
- 23:15Speaker 1: just so significant, and if you actually marketed your team
- 23:19Speaker 1: correctly and ran it correctly unlike j Jerry Reinstorf, it
- 23:22Speaker 1: could be a very significant team that, like, I just
- 23:25Speaker 1: don't see how you make that type of investment and
- 23:28Speaker 1: move that team out of the market that is Chicago
- 23:31Speaker 1: to the brand new market down in Nashville. That like,
- 23:35Speaker 1: it does work theoretically, and I've seen some people like
- 23:38Speaker 1: mentioned on social media that you know, the the entry
- 23:40Speaker 1: fee for starting an expansion team is probably going to
- 23:45Speaker 1: be right around like two billion dollars, possibly like from MLB,
- 23:49Speaker 1: and so, like, it is possible you could certainly buy
- 23:52Speaker 1: the White Sox for cheaper than that and then go
- 23:54Speaker 1: through the process of moving them to Nashville as opponent
- 23:58Speaker 1: to starting the brand new franch But I just don't
- 24:02Speaker 1: see how in the long run that pays off better
- 24:06Speaker 1: than keeping the White Socks in Chicago.
- 24:09Speaker 2: Yeah, you're probably right. I'm just I just want to
- 24:12Speaker 2: see something happen with the White Sox, to be honest,
- 24:13Speaker 2: because like there's a note there's nothing happening, But you're right,
- 24:18Speaker 2: like it just doesn't make sense for it to happen.
- 24:23Speaker 2: And you know, like I said, I feel like Jerry
- 24:25Speaker 2: just needs to be in the news every once in
- 24:26Speaker 2: a while and this is his way of doing it.
- 24:29Speaker 2: And we'll be talking about it, speculating throughout the winter.
- 24:32Speaker 2: Nothing's going to happen, and then we'll move on. So
- 24:35Speaker 2: any good business guy or poor a business guy is
- 24:39Speaker 2: going to kick the tires if the opportunity cames up.
- 24:41Speaker 2: And that's all this is.
- 24:42Speaker 1: Yeah, I think so too. Okay, Well, we got some
- 24:46Speaker 1: card news in terms of releases coming out on the calendar,
- 24:49Speaker 1: so we are speaking on October sixteenth. That is the
- 24:52Speaker 1: really state for TOPS update. So get out there and
- 24:55Speaker 1: buy it at hobby shops near you or I think
- 24:58Speaker 1: it's still available on dot com. Let me check. I
- 25:01Speaker 1: haven't checked in.
- 25:02Speaker 2: I don't think so unless it was gone mid mid afternoon,
- 25:07Speaker 2: unless they reposted, which they may have.
- 25:09Speaker 1: Value boxes are still online.
- 25:11Speaker 2: But value boxes okay.
- 25:12Speaker 1: Yeah, all the hobby and jumbo boxes are gone, so
- 25:16Speaker 1: you'll have to go either via hobby shop or eBay
- 25:21Speaker 1: or somewhere else to find hobby products you can't get
- 25:23Speaker 1: directly from TOPS right now. Value boxes are obviously there,
- 25:27Speaker 1: but the value boxes will also be out in the
- 25:29Speaker 1: wild at retail, at Targets and Walmart's and all over. So,
- 25:33Speaker 1: like I said, after we come back from this upcoming break,
- 25:35Speaker 1: we will get into that big checklist. So stick around
- 25:38Speaker 1: if you want more Tops update details. Still have Allen
- 25:42Speaker 1: Ginter in the thirtieth. On November sixth, we have Stadium Club.
- 25:47Speaker 1: On the thirteenth, we have Tops chrumb Update, which is
- 25:50Speaker 1: a little bit earlier than I think it traditionally has been.
- 25:53Speaker 1: Usually it's not quite like back to back to back
- 25:55Speaker 1: like that, because obviously they're trying to capitalize on some
- 26:00Speaker 1: of the stuff we're gonna talk about with update from
- 26:02Speaker 1: the Top side and the juicy one. I'm excited for this.
- 26:06Speaker 1: We had Stadium Club being added to the schedule last week.
- 26:09Speaker 1: This week Holiday is on the schedule, so I'm I'm
- 26:13Speaker 1: jazzed for that. I I love a good TOPS Holiday release,
- 26:17Speaker 1: and I know you do too. So are you feeling
- 26:20Speaker 1: festive this week as you see that on your calendar
- 26:22Speaker 1: and I can see you're You're like you're ready to go.
- 26:25Speaker 2: I'm feeling festive like Tops Holiday, Like when I first
- 26:28Speaker 2: started ripping TOPS Holiday, I'm like, this is just such
- 26:30Speaker 2: a gimmicky product, and it's what I love is just
- 26:33Speaker 2: it's such an accessible product and you can get it.
- 26:37Speaker 2: It's like I think every box is guaranteed a relic,
- 26:40Speaker 2: Like there's all these little little just you know, easter
- 26:43Speaker 2: eggs of weird uh, you know, short prints. Like it's
- 26:47Speaker 2: just a fun, fun product and the price point is
- 26:49Speaker 2: so reasonable, and oddly it holds its value for pretty
- 26:53Speaker 2: pretty well. And and then that's just because the value
- 26:56Speaker 2: starts pretty low. But I think it's just a fun
- 26:59Speaker 2: product and every year I grab a few boxes just
- 27:02Speaker 2: because why not. And it's like you said, I think
- 27:05Speaker 2: you can probably buy like five boxes for the cost
- 27:08Speaker 2: of like a hobby box of updates, so there's no
- 27:12Speaker 2: reason not to play playing that into the pool.
- 27:14Speaker 1: Yeah, I totally agree. And it also like, even though
- 27:18Speaker 1: it's it's quite different from the actual like design and everything,
- 27:22Speaker 1: it reminds me a lot of like the Collector's Choice
- 27:24Speaker 1: upper deck Collector's Choice back in the day, where like
- 27:28Speaker 1: it is just like you know that it's a cheaper rip,
- 27:31Speaker 1: but it's just fun, great pictures, great designs that I
- 27:34Speaker 1: think it's gonna be and it's gonna look ridiculous with
- 27:37Speaker 1: this year's twenty twenty four design that I'm looking forward
- 27:40Speaker 1: to TOPS Holiday.
- 27:42Speaker 2: That's true, it's good. I don't know what they're gonna
- 27:44Speaker 2: do with this year's it's gonna gonna be fun.
- 27:47Speaker 1: Futuristic neon slash holiday themed. It's gonna it could get
- 27:51Speaker 1: a little crazy pretty fast, especially and all the Paul
- 27:55Speaker 1: schemes like parallels and stuff. It's gonna be a blast
- 27:58Speaker 1: of a product. Okay, well, we're gonna take a quick
- 28:02Speaker 1: break and we will be back on the other side
- 28:04Speaker 1: to do an overview of TOPS twenty twenty four update.
- 28:07Speaker 1: Stick around, all right, Welcome back everybody. We are discussing
- 28:27Speaker 1: the release of twenty twenty four TOPS Update, and so
- 28:30Speaker 1: this is released on October sixteenth as we are speaking,
- 28:34Speaker 1: and you can find it everywhere hobby shops, retail stores
- 28:39Speaker 1: all across the country. We're looking at a three hundred
- 28:41Speaker 1: and fifty card set. And so if you're not familiar
- 28:44Speaker 1: with what Update is compared to, you know, Flagship Series
- 28:47Speaker 1: one and Series two, this is what I would almost
- 28:49Speaker 1: consider like Series three and so usually Update in the
- 28:54Speaker 1: past has been a little bit more short printed, you know,
- 28:57Speaker 1: if you especially I think about to the nineteen eighty
- 29:01Speaker 1: nine set when you had the Griffy that was buried
- 29:04Speaker 1: in the update and other updates that have kind of
- 29:06Speaker 1: come out throughout the years, I would say that's changed
- 29:10Speaker 1: within maybe I think probably around twenty eighteen. Honestly, like
- 29:16Speaker 1: the otani Akunya Sodo Rookies were probably about the last
- 29:20Speaker 1: ones where the Update series was significantly like less printed
- 29:25Speaker 1: than the series one, Series two. I mean, certainly, I'm
- 29:30Speaker 1: sure our boy TOPS Production BB has the actual numbers,
- 29:33Speaker 1: but I'm gonna go with gut feeling just based on
- 29:35Speaker 1: how much like you see of Update in the wild
- 29:38Speaker 1: between that delineation and obviously with that Rookie class, I
- 29:41Speaker 1: think there's a lot more demand for Update As you know,
- 29:45Speaker 1: baseball cars have also become more mainstream again, and you
- 29:49Speaker 1: know Tops has been printing more of them on top
- 29:52Speaker 1: of like, it's just kind of easier to distribute these
- 29:55Speaker 1: than it used to be back in the day where
- 29:57Speaker 1: you know, the retailers only had a few sets and
- 30:00Speaker 1: a certain amount of spot and didn't want to churn
- 30:02Speaker 1: in as much, and releasing Update series is through hobby
- 30:07Speaker 1: Stories was just a lot more difficult. So we have,
- 30:11Speaker 1: like I said, a three hundred and fifty card set
- 30:13Speaker 1: which includes lots and lots of hot rookies this time.
- 30:17Speaker 1: And so Brew, I know you opened your first hobby
- 30:21Speaker 1: box of this. What can you tell the people out
- 30:23Speaker 1: there in terms of your experience opening that hobby box
- 30:26Speaker 1: and any of the highlights maybe from that opening before
- 30:30Speaker 1: we get into the nitty gritty details here.
- 30:33Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, you know the two key boxes you
- 30:36Speaker 2: go out after, the Hobby or the Jumbo, And I
- 30:40Speaker 2: think on tops it was the Hobby was ninety and
- 30:45Speaker 2: the Jumbo was two hundred. Then you got taxis fees,
- 30:48Speaker 2: all that kind of stuff, and so you end up
- 30:49Speaker 2: being like one hundred for the Hobby and two twenty
- 30:51Speaker 2: ish for the for the Jumbo. And I think it's
- 30:55Speaker 2: really just a kind of tale of like what do
- 30:57Speaker 2: you want for the Gramma guarantee perspective and if you
- 30:59Speaker 2: want if you're collecting the whole set, if you're looking
- 31:02Speaker 2: for the whole run, you want to make sure you
- 31:04Speaker 2: get a Paul Skin's rookie. Want to make sure you
- 31:06Speaker 2: get a little of everything. It's the jumbos the way
- 31:08Speaker 2: to go, guaranteed. I think we talked about a little
- 31:12Speaker 2: bit as far as what these always are guaranteed in
- 31:15Speaker 2: auto and two relics in the hobby boxer're guaranteed at
- 31:18Speaker 2: least one auto or relic, so for myself, I we
- 31:22Speaker 2: actually were talking before the show, my hobby was actually
- 31:24Speaker 2: kind of loaded from from some aspect here. I managed
- 31:28Speaker 2: to get a relic uh and an auto just in
- 31:31Speaker 2: the base packs and then pull an auto in the
- 31:32Speaker 2: silver pack as well. So I managed to get two
- 31:34Speaker 2: autos and one relic out of the the hobby box,
- 31:38Speaker 2: which is probably not the expectation, but then the get
- 31:42Speaker 2: to get to your point on the printing, I had
- 31:44Speaker 2: one colored cart colored numbered card which was a gold
- 31:48Speaker 2: thank you Kevin pillar, and then you know, it was
- 31:52Speaker 2: just kind of a mismatch of the of the rookies
- 31:54Speaker 2: and a few inserts.
- 31:56Speaker 1: Uh.
- 31:56Speaker 2: There are some new inserts this year, some fun stuff.
- 31:59Speaker 2: I know we'll get it into. So it is still
- 32:01Speaker 2: a really really fun product to rip. And I have
- 32:04Speaker 2: to say with we as we talk about the number
- 32:07Speaker 2: of rookies in this one, it does it kind of
- 32:10Speaker 2: takes me a little bit back to I'm gonna say,
- 32:13Speaker 2: like twenty twenty Series one when you're ripping looking for
- 32:17Speaker 2: like you're done and Gavin Lux like you just felt
- 32:20Speaker 2: like every pack you were opening had a big rookie
- 32:22Speaker 2: in it. Now, I think the hobby was kind of
- 32:24Speaker 2: going a little crazy design is a big rookie was
- 32:27Speaker 2: in the eye of beholder, but like it definitely as
- 32:29Speaker 2: I was opening this, like first pack, I opened him
- 32:32Speaker 2: like there's a Scheme's debut. There's Wyatt Langford, there's Jackson Merrill,
- 32:35Speaker 2: Like I was hitting like all these big names, Like, man,
- 32:38Speaker 2: this is this is fun, Like it's it's going through
- 32:41Speaker 2: and seeing the bass cards of some of those big
- 32:44Speaker 2: name and rookies, and you know they chalked it full
- 32:46Speaker 2: because they double up the rookies with the rookies and
- 32:49Speaker 2: the rookie debut cards, so you're you're hitting some big
- 32:54Speaker 2: name in almost every pack and something that you can
- 32:57Speaker 2: absolutely absolutely dream on. So it was it's a fun
- 33:01Speaker 2: ripped to me. And again, having a hobby box right
- 33:05Speaker 2: around one hundred dollars mark is really reasonable. I'm still
- 33:09Speaker 2: a big proponent of ripping on the release day or
- 33:13Speaker 2: very closely thereafter if you want to kind of recapture
- 33:15Speaker 2: some of your value back on the secondary market. But
- 33:19Speaker 2: I think I do think this is going to be
- 33:20Speaker 2: a pretty pretty fun product long term for folks to
- 33:25Speaker 2: hold on to. I'm guessing that the print runs are
- 33:28Speaker 2: up there quite a way, so great product. Really excited
- 33:31Speaker 2: to be the first, one of the first products I
- 33:33Speaker 2: wanted to rip in sometimes. And it took me a
- 33:36Speaker 2: while to find find the box in the in the
- 33:39Speaker 2: local market today. Because I wanted it today, I had
- 33:41Speaker 2: to pay up a little bit extra than I normally
- 33:42Speaker 2: would have for it, But I'm glad I got it,
- 33:44Speaker 2: Glad I ripped it. It lasted a whole fifteen minutes. That's
- 33:49Speaker 2: mainly because my ten year old found his way and
- 33:52Speaker 2: helped me rip through it as well. So nothing like
- 33:56Speaker 2: opening open some.
- 33:57Speaker 1: Packs with your child, yes exactly. And speaking to those
- 34:00Speaker 1: print runs, you can find this in the show notes
- 34:03Speaker 1: well as well as the checklist and anything else that
- 34:06Speaker 1: we're talking about. You can go to rasball dot com.
- 34:09Speaker 1: We're we will actually have pictures of some of the
- 34:11Speaker 1: cards and designs that we're about to talk about, because yeah,
- 34:15Speaker 1: this is an audio format and we're talking about things
- 34:17Speaker 1: that are much more striking visually so in terms of
- 34:23Speaker 1: production rate though, we use the tops BB tops production
- 34:26Speaker 1: BB on Twitter, and you can see it right off
- 34:30Speaker 1: the bat twenty twenty two total base. So this is
- 34:33Speaker 1: like each one of those three hundred and fifty cards
- 34:35Speaker 1: I was talking about, there were one point one five
- 34:38Speaker 1: million of them printed, twenty twenty three three million, so
- 34:42Speaker 1: it really went to the roof in twenty twenty three
- 34:45Speaker 1: and twenty twenty four came back at three point one
- 34:49Speaker 1: four million. So obviously with a bunch of those big rookies,
- 34:53Speaker 1: we'll get into it. But tops Update also known for
- 34:56Speaker 1: the other side, which is teams you know, signing veteran
- 35:01Speaker 1: free agents that for the back end of rosters that
- 35:04Speaker 1: you know, fill out this this set. So like you
- 35:06Speaker 1: just mentioned Kevin Palar, players like that of that ILK
- 35:10Speaker 1: kind of rounded out, which is why the pricing of
- 35:13Speaker 1: this product is right on par with Series one, Series two.
- 35:19Speaker 1: But honestly it is better quality because, like you said,
- 35:21Speaker 1: it's got a guaranteed auto or relic. As opposed to
- 35:25Speaker 1: Series one Series two. On that hobby box, you weren't
- 35:29Speaker 1: guaranteed a quote unquote relic, a real relic. You might
- 35:34Speaker 1: have hit a manufactured relic, which isn't the case here
- 35:37Speaker 1: with Update series. You are getting real relics, whether or
- 35:40Speaker 1: not they're actually like game used in player worn and whatever.
- 35:45Speaker 1: That's probably not I mean, that's a little bit more
- 35:47Speaker 1: of an industry wide thing, but that's probably not happening.
- 35:51Speaker 1: But at least it is like an actual hunk of
- 35:53Speaker 1: a jersey or something like that. So let's get into
- 35:58Speaker 1: some of those rookies because, like I said, it's a
- 36:00Speaker 1: big one in terms of the checklist. It's why those
- 36:04Speaker 1: numbers are way up and why the excitement for this
- 36:07Speaker 1: project is out there. We've got the bass rookie cards
- 36:10Speaker 1: of Paul Skeens, Jackson, Holiday Jackson, Sario Jackson, Merrill Hope, Keith,
- 36:17Speaker 1: Wyatt Langford, among others. So there's a lot in there.
- 36:22Speaker 1: And with that, we've also got this rookie debut cards
- 36:25Speaker 1: and if you want to explain to the audience out there,
- 36:28Speaker 1: with the rookie debut cards are a little bit as
- 36:30Speaker 1: well as some other rookie debuts you might find in
- 36:32Speaker 1: the set.
- 36:33Speaker 2: Yeah, so rookie rookie debut cards. A big hallmark of
- 36:38Speaker 2: TOPS Update for many years is the card that produced
- 36:43Speaker 2: commemorating the actual debut date and game of that player. Example,
- 36:50Speaker 2: here Paul Skeen's rookie debut May eleventh and twenty twenty four,
- 36:54Speaker 2: and then on the back of the card, it actually
- 36:56Speaker 2: instead of having the stats or anything like that, it
- 36:57Speaker 2: talks about the debut, how he failed, what he you know,
- 37:02Speaker 2: what he pulled off in the experiences, what his batting
- 37:05Speaker 2: line or pitching line was, and so it's a card
- 37:07Speaker 2: really dedicated to the debut game itself typically holds a
- 37:12Speaker 2: maybe a i'd say a fifty value of the standard
- 37:16Speaker 2: rookie card, but it is another rookie logo card and
- 37:20Speaker 2: so definitely a fun little kicker for tops. Update also
- 37:24Speaker 2: another way for them to really get those big names
- 37:26Speaker 2: into the product, because there are plentiful So what the
- 37:30Speaker 2: guys you just listed off, You're absolutely gonna see a
- 37:33Speaker 2: handful of their cards throughout the set, give you more
- 37:36Speaker 2: opportunities to get colored variations of their their rookie cards
- 37:40Speaker 2: quote unquote. So rookie cards are definitely all the rage
- 37:46Speaker 2: and pops. Update that said, long term do don't really
- 37:50Speaker 2: seem to pull the same collector value as an update
- 37:54Speaker 2: true rookie, and those debut cards are usually you know,
- 37:59Speaker 2: even of the best of the best stars or five
- 38:01Speaker 2: dollars or less, and kind of that secondary market long
- 38:03Speaker 2: long term, so it'll be interesting to see how they
- 38:07Speaker 2: play this time around. You know what's the Paul Skeens
- 38:09Speaker 2: hype isn't enough to drive even the rookie debut cards crazy.
- 38:13Speaker 1: We'll see, yeah, and it has been a while since
- 38:17Speaker 1: we've actually kind of seen anybody of too much. I
- 38:20Speaker 1: would say significance overall that has a debut card, especially
- 38:24Speaker 1: going back to the twenty eighteen set with Otani, Acunya, Soto,
- 38:29Speaker 1: those ones have held some value out there in the market,
- 38:32Speaker 1: especially the Otani one obviously, and I would say the
- 38:35Speaker 1: Acunya one second, he's okay, yeah, exactly, but they they're
- 38:40Speaker 1: never trading. I mean, during like the pandemic, some of
- 38:44Speaker 1: those cards were trading for about the same price as
- 38:47Speaker 1: the base at points. But that was a fever dream
- 38:50Speaker 1: and that's over so thankfully. And the nice thing that
- 38:57Speaker 1: I like to do with update though, is like, not
- 39:00Speaker 1: only do we have those great rookies that you can
- 39:02Speaker 1: try to flip now to get some of that hobby
- 39:04Speaker 1: box value back, or you you know, you want to
- 39:06Speaker 1: tuck away your sharpest Paul Schemes or Jackson Merril card,
- 39:11Speaker 1: you know, just for your personal collection. There's also lots
- 39:15Speaker 1: and lots of rookies. Just in update series, we're all
- 39:18Speaker 1: between you know, guys who barely play at all in
- 39:22Speaker 1: the majors, you know, relievers, everyday players, and just these
- 39:29Speaker 1: stars too. So what I like to do, though, is
- 39:32Speaker 1: like take a lot of those rookies that come through
- 39:34Speaker 1: an update and just tuck them away because you know,
- 39:37Speaker 1: the current value of them actually in the market's pretty
- 39:40Speaker 1: much nil. You know, they're like a common card in
- 39:42Speaker 1: terms of like that kind of classic I think of,
- 39:44Speaker 1: especially like the Beckett magazine is like the classic like
- 39:47Speaker 1: five to ten cent card. Maybe you can get you know,
- 39:50Speaker 1: fifty twenty five cents for them, but they're not significant
- 39:54Speaker 1: cards now. But because of where they are in their
- 39:58Speaker 1: careers obviously, you know, and especially given the way that
- 40:02Speaker 1: trajectories of baseball players can take lots of different paths,
- 40:06Speaker 1: and you know, players can pop up out of nowhere
- 40:10Speaker 1: and really do well. Like I like to tuck these away,
- 40:14Speaker 1: and especially players that I think about from previous sets
- 40:18Speaker 1: that are like this. You know, we had like Cole
- 40:20Speaker 1: Reagan's last year who wasn't trading for much and now
- 40:23Speaker 1: you know, has a little bit of value. Royce Lewis
- 40:25Speaker 1: in twenty twenty two George Kirby in twenty twenty two.
- 40:28Speaker 1: I've got lots of George Kirby's tucked away because like
- 40:30Speaker 1: it does seem like George Kirby is going to turn
- 40:32Speaker 1: into a pretty significant picture down the stretch of his career.
- 40:37Speaker 1: You got like Logan Gilbert in twenty one, Nester Cortez
- 40:39Speaker 1: is buried in twenty twenty, Luisa Rise actually is a
- 40:42Speaker 1: pretty big one in twenty nineteen, where that's certainly in
- 40:45Speaker 1: a lot of like those dime boxes even still probably,
- 40:49Speaker 1: but that is a pretty decently valued rookie card. Now,
- 40:53Speaker 1: So what types of players are you looking for here
- 40:56Speaker 1: in twenty twenty four update where the pricing on them,
- 41:00Speaker 1: the trading of them might not be too hot right now,
- 41:02Speaker 1: but you could see them really rounding into form in
- 41:06Speaker 1: and having some value in a couple of years.
- 41:08Speaker 2: Yeah, And so I'm I'm doing this the analog way here,
- 41:12Speaker 2: and I just I'm I'm going through when I when
- 41:14Speaker 2: I rip a box of cards, And I'm sure everybody
- 41:18Speaker 2: has their own methodology, Like I sort into different stacks.
- 41:21Speaker 2: I sort into an interesting rookie stack and a not
- 41:23Speaker 2: interesting rookie stack. I sort the base, I sort my
- 41:27Speaker 2: Cardinals out, I've got my inserts that I've got my
- 41:30Speaker 2: hits like that. It's kind of a hot, you know,
- 41:32Speaker 2: hodgepodge of strategy. So I was going through my interesting
- 41:36Speaker 2: rookie stack, and you know, compared to the guys we
- 41:37Speaker 2: call out the Schemes, the holiday Cheerios, Merrills, the Keiths,
- 41:40Speaker 2: the Langfords, those types of guys. And then I pulled
- 41:43Speaker 2: out the ones that were in my interesting stack, but
- 41:45Speaker 2: not those names unless be you know, full fully transparent
- 41:48Speaker 2: here ripped a hobby. So I'm missing plenty of names
- 41:52Speaker 2: because I got probably half the half the set in
- 41:54Speaker 2: here as far as guys that were really in there,
- 41:57Speaker 2: but the ones that jumped out to me in my
- 42:01Speaker 2: three names one and I struggle go here from a
- 42:05Speaker 2: pitching perspective. But in Pittsburgh we got Jared Jones. Jared
- 42:10Speaker 2: Jones is definitely an intriguing one. Seems like he could
- 42:12Speaker 2: be a workhorse, definitely wore down during this season, had
- 42:17Speaker 2: had some struggles at some point, but definitely an interesting
- 42:19Speaker 2: guy that next year. Another guy that I think, you know,
- 42:22Speaker 2: he still has growth to go and could be really
- 42:25Speaker 2: interesting and didn't have the greatest uh, you know, rookie showing.
- 42:31Speaker 2: Lizzie came out last year as Kyle Menzardo, I think
- 42:34Speaker 2: from the Guardians, definitely a lot of intrigued there. And
- 42:37Speaker 2: probably the one if I'm gonna put my hat on
- 42:39Speaker 2: him as a guy that could really make a play
- 42:42Speaker 2: at some point would be Tyler Black for for the
- 42:44Speaker 2: Milwaukee Brewers. I think a guy that could you know,
- 42:47Speaker 2: conceivably go twenty twenty really, could you know, in that
- 42:51Speaker 2: kind of market, be the name of the of the team, Like,
- 42:55Speaker 2: is that like the most likely outcome? Not necessarily, but
- 42:58Speaker 2: are the tools and the things there to really take
- 43:02Speaker 2: that team that city by storm? Yeah? He absolutely could.
- 43:05Speaker 2: So those are the kind of the guys that I
- 43:07Speaker 2: got in my list, And, like I said, if you're
- 43:08Speaker 2: making me pick one of those guys out, as much
- 43:11Speaker 2: as we talked about Joey Lo Perfido earlier this year,
- 43:14Speaker 2: I didn't go there. I'm gonna I'm gonna stick with
- 43:18Speaker 2: Tyler Black as my call out there. So how about you?
- 43:22Speaker 2: Who did I miss? Who's the guy that you're kind
- 43:24Speaker 2: of gonna jump on here?
- 43:26Speaker 1: Yeah? I mean I think that's a great choice. The
- 43:29Speaker 1: couple of other guys that I am looking at first,
- 43:33Speaker 1: in terms of the yeah, maybe a little wish casting
- 43:35Speaker 1: is as in Barger, I can't quit this guy that like,
- 43:38Speaker 1: he does a great bat for the Blue Jays. He's
- 43:40Speaker 1: only twenty four. He should have a pretty good shot
- 43:43Speaker 1: at a larger role going to next year. And especially
- 43:47Speaker 1: like when I'm looking at these types of cards and
- 43:49Speaker 1: I'm looking for guys who can kind of fall into
- 43:51Speaker 1: this category, it's especially players who I could see, like,
- 43:56Speaker 1: you know, going to an All Star Game or two.
- 43:58Speaker 1: And then that gets into a little bit like the
- 44:00Speaker 1: strategy we've talked about during the summer, where you know,
- 44:03Speaker 1: you kind of like scirrel away some of these rookie cards,
- 44:06Speaker 1: and then when they do something significant in their career,
- 44:09Speaker 1: either you know, make an All Star game, throw a
- 44:11Speaker 1: no hitter, do something that just kind of puts them
- 44:15Speaker 1: on the map in baseball, the rookie card rises ever
- 44:18Speaker 1: so slightly and you kind of look to capitalize on
- 44:22Speaker 1: that quickly. But if there's one guy who I think
- 44:25Speaker 1: I'm looking at more seriously than Barger, it's actually Andy
- 44:28Speaker 1: pa Haes from the Los Angeles Dodgers that I think
- 44:32Speaker 1: he is kind of hidden within this series and I
- 44:35Speaker 1: think also just hidden within baseball overall. You know, he's
- 44:38Speaker 1: still super young. He's only twenty three. He really has
- 44:42Speaker 1: still a decent amount of development left in him because
- 44:46Speaker 1: he has been banged up over the past couple of years.
- 44:49Speaker 1: And I think as he gets a bigger and bigger
- 44:53Speaker 1: opportunity in Los Angeles, you could see pa Haes really
- 44:56Speaker 1: kind of turning a corner into somebody who could be
- 44:59Speaker 1: you know, cut time All star, significant piece of a
- 45:02Speaker 1: Dodgers team that wins a few World Series and you
- 45:05Speaker 1: can see a little bit of value there. So that's
- 45:08Speaker 1: the guy who I think I'm looking at and trying
- 45:10Speaker 1: to tuck away.
- 45:11Speaker 2: Yeah. I think it's a really interesting call because that's
- 45:14Speaker 2: you got the big stage there, and you definitely have
- 45:16Speaker 2: some tools. It's kind of like what you Hopevin Lux
- 45:19Speaker 2: was gonna be. It'll see, you know, if if yes
- 45:22Speaker 2: can can make that happen. So I think that's a
- 45:25Speaker 2: great call. Yeah.
- 45:27Speaker 1: Okay, Well let's get into some of those insert sets
- 45:29Speaker 1: that I talked about. So we've got a lot of
- 45:31Speaker 1: the tried and trews in terms of the you know,
- 45:34Speaker 1: thirty fifth anniversary cards. So those are your nineteen eighty
- 45:38Speaker 1: nine like insert parallels and so it's got the nineteen
- 45:42Speaker 1: eighty nine design on it. In terms of the scripts
- 45:45Speaker 1: team and the white border, it's classic. And I think these,
- 45:49Speaker 1: especially given the color match with the script like, they're
- 45:53Speaker 1: going to be popular. I think that the Paul Schemes
- 45:55Speaker 1: one is going to be a very kind of popular
- 45:59Speaker 1: card for a long time, especially the parallels. You know,
- 46:02Speaker 1: if you could get that in like the black color match, woah,
- 46:06Speaker 1: just like perfect as well as all the other rookies
- 46:08Speaker 1: like it's a great design. A lot of them have
- 46:11Speaker 1: had other cards in the series one and two that
- 46:13Speaker 1: are in the nineteen eighty nine design, So just make
- 46:18Speaker 1: sure that you're getting the one that you want. I
- 46:19Speaker 1: think the ones that came earlier will probably have a
- 46:21Speaker 1: little value more value, but I don't think you're gonna
- 46:24Speaker 1: go wrong just because the design pretty well. Also got
- 46:27Speaker 1: the tops black gold that we have gotten used to
- 46:31Speaker 1: gotten used to the All Star checklist as well during updates,
- 46:36Speaker 1: so that also pairs up well with surprisingly some nice
- 46:40Speaker 1: relics that like the All Star relics. I hated these
- 46:44Speaker 1: jerseys when I was watching it on TV. I still
- 46:47Speaker 1: hate them and like when I see them outside these cards,
- 46:50Speaker 1: but in the cards with the design on the cards
- 46:54Speaker 1: and the colors of the jerseys. I kind of like them.
- 46:57Speaker 1: Am I crazy?
- 46:59Speaker 2: I don't, You're crazy? And I did pull one of
- 47:01Speaker 2: those in my box and like, and I pulled a
- 47:04Speaker 2: gold version which actually makes it look k look even
- 47:07Speaker 2: better because it actually kind of it's a kind of
- 47:10Speaker 2: a burnt gold which actually matches the jersey which is
- 47:13Speaker 2: like ugly tan, but it's actually kind of works in
- 47:17Speaker 2: this design. And the thing is with these is you
- 47:20Speaker 2: talked about, you know, player worn. These are events worn relics.
- 47:25Speaker 2: These are actually relics from the player wore the jersey
- 47:28Speaker 2: during the All Star festivities. Like again, it's still kind
- 47:31Speaker 2: of player worn because they weren't during the festivities. Was
- 47:33Speaker 2: like they took their pick pootoo, they took the jersey
- 47:36Speaker 2: uput I want, like right, but it's it is a
- 47:38Speaker 2: little bit a unique twist on the Hey game used
- 47:41Speaker 2: I don't know what game it was, but Hey, I
- 47:43Speaker 2: know that this this patch was used and on you know,
- 47:47Speaker 2: the player's back at the All Star Game festivities. That's
- 47:50Speaker 2: like a unique little wrinkle to those cards. And I
- 47:54Speaker 2: think that's a great, great play by by tops.
- 47:58Speaker 1: Yeah, I agree that I think they look really sharp,
- 48:02Speaker 1: and especially last year's were awful from the like the
- 48:05Speaker 1: Seattle All Star Game, they look terrible, but something about
- 48:09Speaker 1: the motif of them. This year it does look pretty sharp.
- 48:12Speaker 1: So we've also got our repeats of what we've had
- 48:15Speaker 1: in Series one and two between heavy lumber, home field advantage,
- 48:19Speaker 1: legendary home field advantage, and of course we've also got
- 48:24Speaker 1: stars of MLB still around along with those chrome versions,
- 48:27Speaker 1: so certainly keep an eye out for those. We do
- 48:31Speaker 1: have a pretty significant short print included here in tops
- 48:35Speaker 1: update where they have brought back the first Pitch series.
- 48:38Speaker 1: So what this is is actually an insert of celebrities
- 48:43Speaker 1: and non baseball players who are doing first pitches. So
- 48:47Speaker 1: popular cars I can think of over the years are
- 48:51Speaker 1: There's an Aubrey Plaza one for the Dodgers that has
- 48:54Speaker 1: always been popular. Kendrick Lamar for the Dodgers has been popular.
- 48:58Speaker 1: I like the John Goodman one for the Saintless Cardinals.
- 49:01Speaker 1: I don't know the years on these, I wish I did,
- 49:02Speaker 1: but that's kind of like the example of what we got.
- 49:05Speaker 1: The checklist actually wasn't released on Beckett, but just looking
- 49:09Speaker 1: on eBay, I think it's just four of five of
- 49:16Speaker 1: them that I think it's looking Andy Reid, Jaden Daniels,
- 49:21Speaker 1: metro Booman, Zach Edy, and neymar I think are the
- 49:26Speaker 1: first five first pitch players or like cards that we
- 49:32Speaker 1: have as well as autograph parallels. So those will be
- 49:35Speaker 1: I think extremely popular in terms of the crossover that
- 49:38Speaker 1: you're looking at of you know, popular football stars. You
- 49:43Speaker 1: got metro Booman and Big Saint Louis Jersey and the
- 49:45Speaker 1: Low Jersey. So what do you think about these first
- 49:48Speaker 1: pitch cards? Are they too gimmicky for you? Or are
- 49:51Speaker 1: they kind of like threatening that needle just right?
- 49:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it's it's it's a little gimmicky, but
- 49:58Speaker 2: justin it works just enough. Like it's you didn't go
- 50:01Speaker 2: fully outside the sport and just pull something else completely random,
- 50:03Speaker 2: you still like connected it to the game, and it's
- 50:06Speaker 2: not such a deep list that you've rule fully watered
- 50:11Speaker 2: it down. So I'm a slight buy on this one.
- 50:13Speaker 2: I do like the concept, but I still it still
- 50:17Speaker 2: feels a little bit of a stretch trying to stretch
- 50:20Speaker 2: the baseball market to maybe other sports and things like that.
- 50:23Speaker 2: So I'm a lukewarm on it. I'll take one if
- 50:26Speaker 2: I get it, but it's probably not the thing that
- 50:28Speaker 2: I'd be searching for. So how about you, Is this
- 50:31Speaker 2: gonna be your holy grail here to collect the whole
- 50:34Speaker 2: set of first pitch cards?
- 50:35Speaker 1: Yeah, no, it's gonna That would be tough because other
- 50:40Speaker 1: times it hasn't been a short print, So it hasn't
- 50:42Speaker 1: been in a set in a little bit, and it
- 50:45Speaker 1: hasn't gone the short print route like some Usually it's
- 50:48Speaker 1: been just a kind of more normal insert where you
- 50:52Speaker 1: know it's like one every twenty packs or whatever. It
- 50:54Speaker 1: is about one in every ninety hobby packs. Is that
- 50:58Speaker 1: what it is? Let me check it again, one hundred
- 51:01Speaker 1: and sixty hobby packs, So it's it's a pretty tough
- 51:05Speaker 1: hole hole out of hobbies. One in every eighty fat
- 51:08Speaker 1: packs or forty hangers, So that's a you're looking at.
- 51:12Speaker 1: I mean, that's actually not a bad ratio for hangers
- 51:15Speaker 1: and fat packs now that I think about it, compared
- 51:16Speaker 1: to how much you would have to pay for hobby boxes.
- 51:21Speaker 1: But I like them, but they I prefer them when
- 51:26Speaker 1: they're like the celebrities and not. And then you get
- 51:28Speaker 1: outside sports a little bit more that usually those sports.
- 51:31Speaker 1: The sports crossover is like, especially you look at like
- 51:34Speaker 1: Jaden Daniels is in a Nationals jersey, but like, I
- 51:38Speaker 1: don't think Jaden Daniels is a Nationals fan that, like
- 51:41Speaker 1: I enjoy the enthusiasm of the celebrities actually usually are
- 51:45Speaker 1: rooting for those teams that they're pitch during the first
- 51:48Speaker 1: pitch for. And so this is also why I'm kind
- 51:50Speaker 1: of holding out hope that Ludacris with that kind of
- 51:53Speaker 1: like foam arms that he did for the Atlanta Braves
- 51:56Speaker 1: this year makes it into first pitch for next year.
- 52:00Speaker 2: That bill feel like they're mis missing out on some
- 52:03Speaker 2: of the greatest first pitches of all time. Maybe like
- 52:06Speaker 2: you just need to go it was the Mayor Cincinnati
- 52:08Speaker 2: or fifty cent or guys like that, Like I think,
- 52:11Speaker 2: is there a fifty cent one? I've missed that one.
- 52:14Speaker 1: Let me find it. I thought there was. But maybe
- 52:16Speaker 1: it's also like a knockoff card or something like. But yes,
- 52:21Speaker 1: they've it's been like I said, it's been a hot
- 52:24Speaker 1: minute since these have been around. But uh, yeah, they
- 52:27Speaker 1: did have a fifty cent one fifteen okay, fair, Oh
- 52:31Speaker 1: yeah I recall this one now, Okay, yeah, you also
- 52:35Speaker 1: had like Jack Black in that, but it back in
- 52:37Speaker 1: twenty fifteen. That was just a normal set. It was
- 52:40Speaker 1: just a normal insert set. Wasn't all that hard to hit,
- 52:44Speaker 1: and certainly much larger. So yeah, we'll keep our eyes
- 52:49Speaker 1: on that, especially. You know, if you've got Namar autos
- 52:52Speaker 1: in this product.
- 52:53Speaker 2: Oh yeah, those are those?
- 52:55Speaker 1: Be nice? You also might be singing a different tune
- 52:57Speaker 1: on these if you had pulled the name our auto.
- 52:59Speaker 2: Right, I love it, I love it.
- 53:03Speaker 1: Okay, Well, let's get into some of those other insert sets,
- 53:05Speaker 1: because we've got some new ones that have come through,
- 53:08Speaker 1: and I have some mean things to say about them.
- 53:12Speaker 1: So the two new ones that really stand out to
- 53:17Speaker 1: me are we've got first, the He's Cooking set or
- 53:23Speaker 1: let Him Cook? Sorry I misspoke, they let Him Cook checklist,
- 53:26Speaker 1: which is a twenty five card checklist one in every
- 53:30Speaker 1: thirty two Hobby packs. So a decently rare insert, but
- 53:34Speaker 1: not like the hardest insert to pull. And they're boring
- 53:39Speaker 1: is all get out. I don't even know how to
- 53:40Speaker 1: describe them. They have like light flames in the background,
- 53:43Speaker 1: like very hinted. But first you should I go into
- 53:49Speaker 1: the other set or should I get into the rant? Now?
- 53:51Speaker 1: What do you think?
- 53:52Speaker 2: Go for it? I want to, I want to hear it.
- 53:54Speaker 2: I'm ready for it, go for it. Well, I'm trying
- 53:55Speaker 2: to find a picture of to let him cook while
- 53:58Speaker 2: we do that, but do it.
- 54:00Speaker 1: The rant goes a little bit with the next new set,
- 54:02Speaker 1: which is Mystical, which is a fifty card set, one
- 54:05Speaker 1: in every twelve Hobby packs. So a lot of these
- 54:09Speaker 1: cards also not that hard to hit. But what it
- 54:13Speaker 1: is is like outlandish. It's like a candy Land card
- 54:18Speaker 1: in terms of the players are you know, in a
- 54:22Speaker 1: cloudy scene usually and it's just kind of like rainbows
- 54:25Speaker 1: and there's like unicorns and all sorts of just kind
- 54:28Speaker 1: of weird stuff on it. Where so here's my thing
- 54:32Speaker 1: is you went really crazy on the Mystical set and
- 54:36Speaker 1: then you went so bland on the let them Cook set,
- 54:39Speaker 1: Like why one the Mystical set, like it just is
- 54:43Speaker 1: not doing anything for me? Is part of it? That
- 54:45Speaker 1: like I just don't see the gimmick within it that
- 54:48Speaker 1: like it's not necessarily like on a theme, it's kind
- 54:50Speaker 1: of like My Little Pony or care Bears, but it's not,
- 54:55Speaker 1: and it's just kind of strange as opposed to let
- 54:58Speaker 1: them Cook, Like why didn't you lean into it? And
- 55:00Speaker 1: like photoshop these players into like chef suits or just
- 55:04Speaker 1: like really get into the restaurant like theme or grilling theme.
- 55:11Speaker 1: That like there is no standout quality feature to them
- 55:15Speaker 1: as opposed to the mystical set. Almost goes like too
- 55:18Speaker 1: far the other way. And I haven't seen these in person.
- 55:20Speaker 1: Maybe they have like an extra different foil on them.
- 55:23Speaker 1: You've got them? Is it god like a foil? It?
- 55:25Speaker 2: Yeah, So that's why I was gonna disagree with you,
- 55:27Speaker 2: because when I opened these, I didn't had looked at
- 55:29Speaker 2: this before. They do have a very interesting foil refractor
- 55:34Speaker 2: on it, and I don't know how to describe it,
- 55:36Speaker 2: like it's it's almost like he has to say it
- 55:39Speaker 2: like glitter, like kind of smear glitter. It's it's very
- 55:43Speaker 2: it is very like the weird thing that there's a
- 55:45Speaker 2: little like like, yes, it's kind of like a sparkle
- 55:49Speaker 2: is kind of what it is. And when you look
- 55:51Speaker 2: at it, it really jumps and it's just it it
- 55:54Speaker 2: any direction you turn, it has a different refraction to
- 55:57Speaker 2: it and it's not a consistent refraction, which is what
- 56:01Speaker 2: I really like about it. Like I said, outside of
- 56:03Speaker 2: the random panda bear with the gester sat in the corner,
- 56:05Speaker 2: but I'm actually I'm actually digging the mysticals as I
- 56:10Speaker 2: like open them up, as I compare them to like
- 56:12Speaker 2: some of the other insert sets to here, so like
- 56:14Speaker 2: it starts the eighty nine's or like the Autumn Tails
- 56:17Speaker 2: and you know, just a few of those, I'm like, yeah,
- 56:20Speaker 2: those just weren't doing it for me. And I hit
- 56:22Speaker 2: the mysticals and I'm like, hey, these are kind of unique.
- 56:24Speaker 2: This is actually kind of a a shnazzy. It's it's
- 56:27Speaker 2: like the Stars of MLB but better, okay type of thing.
- 56:31Speaker 2: So I'm I'm I was surprised. I was surprised because
- 56:34Speaker 2: if you look at it online, I see it looks
- 56:37Speaker 2: boring because you can't see the finish and the refraction
- 56:41Speaker 2: on it. So hold your judgment. I'll send you one
- 56:44Speaker 2: of these. We'll we'll have to go through. Come back
- 56:47Speaker 2: next week, or maybe get.
- 56:48Speaker 1: You a little bit of these now. Yeah, some of
- 56:50Speaker 1: the ones that weren't in like the kind of pr materials.
- 56:56Speaker 1: It's least a Frank. That's that's also what I was
- 56:58Speaker 1: trying to hit on. It's kind Lisa Frank motif from
- 57:01Speaker 1: like the nineties, where yeah, if it does have the
- 57:05Speaker 1: cool sparkle, then I could probably be on board with it.
- 57:08Speaker 1: But did you Polly to let them cooks? And I
- 57:10Speaker 1: did not. The most boring insert you've ever seen.
- 57:14Speaker 2: It is an incredibly boring insert. I just sent you
- 57:16Speaker 2: a picture of the mysticals. I can see the finish
- 57:20Speaker 2: on it, but it's I didn't pully to let it cook.
- 57:24Speaker 2: And I'm trying to think there was used to be
- 57:25Speaker 2: another insert back in the day that kind of reminded
- 57:28Speaker 2: me of and it was just but those ones do
- 57:30Speaker 2: you just kind of look like, uh, what are you
- 57:32Speaker 2: trying to do here? It's just like you. It's just
- 57:34Speaker 2: like you went into like word art and just put
- 57:36Speaker 2: some you know, little uh triangles or rectangles together, and
- 57:41Speaker 2: so what do we do? So that that's interesting. I
- 57:44Speaker 2: also I'm looking through mind like I don't see any
- 57:45Speaker 2: All Star game inserts, and so I need to go
- 57:47Speaker 2: back through my base cards and see if I miss
- 57:49Speaker 2: something there. But uh, considering those are like one in
- 57:52Speaker 2: three Hobby packs and I opened like twenty Hobby packs,
- 57:55Speaker 2: so I that's what happens when you get an extra audit.
- 57:58Speaker 2: They just skip everything else. But but yeah, I think
- 58:02Speaker 2: you'll be pleasantly surprised about Mystical let it cook was
- 58:06Speaker 2: probably a big, big miss to kind of slam their
- 58:10Speaker 2: hand with George Forward on that one. You got it?
- 58:13Speaker 1: Yeah, So okay, I'm glad that I got that out
- 58:17Speaker 1: of my system because I was, and I'm glad to
- 58:19Speaker 1: see those mystical cards don't suck quite as bad as
- 58:22Speaker 1: they looked at the promotional materials. But let's get into
- 58:26Speaker 1: some of the parallels that we have of those base
- 58:28Speaker 1: three hundred and fifty cards, So a lot of those
- 58:30Speaker 1: inserts too. They'll have like your classic kind of mini
- 58:33Speaker 1: Rainbow Run, especially like a blue unnumbered parallel, and then
- 58:37Speaker 1: kind of get into some of our normal colors that
- 58:41Speaker 1: we expect like green, orange, red, black, so on and
- 58:47Speaker 1: so forth. But there's so many inserts and stuff we
- 58:49Speaker 1: won't quite get into all those parallels. So we'll focus
- 58:51Speaker 1: more so here on the base set. So once again,
- 58:55Speaker 1: they're bringing back the Golden Mirror SSPs. I think those
- 58:58Speaker 1: are probably here to stay that like I don't. They've
- 59:01Speaker 1: just been so popular and people love getting the super
- 59:04Speaker 1: short prints and image variations of each individual player, and
- 59:08Speaker 1: I think that they're great for people chasing a really
- 59:12Speaker 1: tough set to put together or looking for a little
- 59:16Speaker 1: variation in their overall sets, and especially if you're a
- 59:19Speaker 1: team collector, great way to get a team set together.
- 59:23Speaker 1: So those are back again here, and especially that Paul
- 59:27Speaker 1: Schemes one is going to be just like one of
- 59:29Speaker 1: the Chase cards, of the Chase cards that is especially
- 59:33Speaker 1: unnumbered out of this set. So goldimere SSPs are back.
- 59:37Speaker 1: And then once again like we've had with series one,
- 59:41Speaker 1: Series two twenty twenty three update, they're rolling it back
- 59:45Speaker 1: here in twenty twenty four update in terms of the
- 59:48Speaker 1: parallels that align with the season. So we've got fall
- 59:52Speaker 1: Halloween again. So again we've got the just like twenty
- 59:56Speaker 1: twenty three, we've got you know, the jack o' lanterns
- 59:59Speaker 1: and all sorts of other cool parallels. So again I
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: think that's probably here to stay. It seems popular enough
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: and like people enjoy them out there. Honestly, one of
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: the coolest ones I've seen has been the series two
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: waves one of one parallel from Otani that was on
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: Reddit a couple like weeks ago, and especially given that
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: like those waves had like a Japanese I'm trying to
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: remember the Japanese artist, but you know what, I'm talking
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: about the classic kind of waves, ye motif it was.
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: It's a beautiful card. So this year they've got Mummy,
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: which I think is going to be pretty sick, to
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: go along with Witch's Hat and bats are one of one.
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: They did screw this up last year if you remember that,
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: Like I think the numbering and the parallels that they
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: aligned on twenty twenty three update with like bats was
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: supposed to be I think one of one, but it
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: was of ten and.
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: It was yes, But we haven't found that yet for
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: tops update this year. But we're only like twenty hours in.
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: I know. Yeah. It was also funny. I was looking
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: at like our pod from this time last year when
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: we did Bom and Chrome and remember all those super
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: fractor issues. It's been funny that like that that happened.
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: I kind of missed that we had an update on
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: that every week, but I'm leading up to it. I'm
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: letting you do it this time. It is quite the
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: list of parallels, especially because there's a lot of those
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: Halloween ones, and I think they'll stand out once you
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: discuss each parallel. But I see you slipping the water,
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: I see you stretching the jaw I'll let you prep
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: before you get into this full list of all the
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: parallels of Base twenty twenty four Tops Update. Let it rip.
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: This is gonna be fun, This's gonna be tough. This
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: is a lot of responsibility. We'll see if I can
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: do it all. Right, Let's go through the perils of
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: the base for twenty twenty four Tops Update. We have
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: your typical rainbow foils, you have your royal blues. You
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: have your gold rainbow foils only in jumbos. You have
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: your holidays only in your available in value packs, your
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: yellows and hangars only, your aqua and your Fanatics boxes only.
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: You got your silver crackle foil board only in the
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: super boxes, yellow rainbow foil and hangars, jack O lanterns
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: and ghosts in the value boxes. And now we get
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: into the standards. Maybe we have gold out of twenty
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: twenty four, we have blue hollow foil board, purple hollow
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: foil board, green crackle follow boil board, orange crackle foil board,
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: red crackle foil board. None of those are numbered, by
- 1:02:33Speaker 2: the way, they're just harder and harder to find.
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: That's also a change because usually orange, red, purple, blue
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: have been numbered.
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: Yeah, and if you want to try to do the math,
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: which I'm gonna try to just do at a high
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: level here. So we look at some of the odds
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: of other cards, you're gonna have to say that the
- 1:02:57Speaker 2: red Crackle foil boards, probably out of one ninety nine
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: is my I guess, just not listed. The orange is
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: gonna be a little bit.
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: They are numbered the Beckett website. Okay, it doesn't have
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: the number your standard, it's your stand Okay, numbered.
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: Good well, I was gonna have to guess all the
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: way through two ninety nine, all the way up, and
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: I we'll see, we would have seen how bad I did.
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: I'm staring straight out of five hundred dollars, Paul Schemes,
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: Red crackled ninety four out of one ninety nine.
- 1:03:26Speaker 2: Okay, all right, well Becket let me down, but we'll
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: continue on because we're not even close to done. Vintage
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: stock out of ninety nine years, Your Independence Day out
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: of seventy six, you guess your blacks out of seventy four,
- 1:03:40Speaker 2: Your Father's Day blue, your Mother's Day pink, both out
- 1:03:43Speaker 2: of fifty You got your mummy variations only found in
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: val value box. Your yellow Crackle foil boards out of fifty,
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: only found in hangars. Then you got your good old
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: Memorial Day Camo out of twenty five, so it's gonna
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: be found in pretty much every product.
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: Uh.
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: Then you get into the gimmicks. You got your black
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: cats out of ten, your clears out of ten, your
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: Witch's hats out of five, and then you get your
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: bats out of one. I feel bad for the clear
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: acetates sit in the middle of that group. Then we
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: do have your the first card again that was a
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: little bit of a controversy with series one. The first
- 1:04:19Speaker 2: card one of one, the first one off the line,
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: one of one. You have your platinum one on one,
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: and then you have all of your good printing plate
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: one of ones across black, Cyan, magenta, and yellow. So
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: that is the list. There are just a few variations
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: of the cards. Guessing we probably have some more that
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: we don't even know about this point, but quite a
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: few good ones this time around.
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: Yeah, and that's thirty two parallels, not including the each
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: individual like printing plate. That's a hell of a lot.
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: So as we get into this like they seem to
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: just be stuffing more and more in because part of it,
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: too is it's seven holiday parallels this time around that
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: I think the Halloween ones were more popular. I don't
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: think it hurts that Jackson holidays in this product and
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: is gonna look great in these cards.
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: Jackson Colton Cowser, Yeah, that's gonna be great.
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: But like seven holiday parallels just for Halloween, Like, at
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: this point, just give me TOPS Halloween, man, Like, I'll
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: take TOPS Holiday.
- 1:05:20Speaker 2: We had TOPS Holiday and Christmas was give me Tops Halloween.
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: Tops Halloween would look pretty cool. I'm not gonna lie
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: like that would be a great set. But or yeah,
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: even moved like the TOPS holiday stuff into like a
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: quarterly release, and that'd be great because it is. That's
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: where a lot of these parallels are coming from. Otherwise,
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: it's a pretty i would say, standard set of what
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: we've been looking for. Get to enjoy the fun of
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: trying to distinguish a yellow rainbow foil and a goat
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: gold rainbow foil on eBay or in the wild. That's
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: impossible unless you've pulled them like that. That's confounding that
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: they go down well.
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: I love when we have like the red and the
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: pinks that a basically the same.
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: Yeah, where the colors blend together.
- 1:06:03Speaker 2: But is this true red or just red?
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: I don't know that is with all those different variations. Honestly,
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: that's just shows you how many of these cards are
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: out in the wild. Considering you pulled one gold of
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: twenty four in your entire hobby pack when obviously you
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: like you said, like it was a little bit different.
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: Maybe you like missed a color hit and got replaced
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: with your Harrison Beateer auto. But yeah, that is used
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: to pull like multiple golds, multiple colors in your hobby boxes.
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: That like, that's part of what happens when you have
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: three point four million base cards out there.
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: Yeah, to the point, like as I look through what
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: I ended up pulling out of out of these, I
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: got a Royal blue variation, I have two rainbow foil
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: variations and a gold out of twenty twenty four. Those
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: are the variations of like you know, to base cards
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: that I found out of how many packs are in
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: one of these twenty twenty packs, I believe in the
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: hobby box, And so that's quite quite slim pickings. There
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: definitely all or nothing kind of strategy in the hobby boxes,
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: and Jombo's typically have a little bit better odds on
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: those types of things, but still I think it's gonna
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: have to be pretty pretty dicey on those as well.
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean so I think that that sums up
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: really like everything that we've got in this product. Like
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: I said, we're gonna start hitting some pretty significant cards
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: here over the past or the next couple of days,
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: So I think we'll have more of that to cover
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: next week, especially as like some of these significant Paul
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: Schemes cards start hitting. Like I said, do not also
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: do not buy any Paul Skames cards for a couple
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: of weeks. If you're out there in the market, let
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: it settle a little bit, unless you're chasing something that's
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: like of twenty five or lower of Paul skins. Let
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: it settle a little bit, because this is going to
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: be an extremely hot market, especially as we get into
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: like when baseball stops and like it just becomes the
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: only way to engage with baseball is through baseball cards
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: that you see another little bit of like a bump
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: in the market. Usually that wait a little bit for
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: it to settle, And that would be my one piece
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: of advice if you're out there. Honestly, otherwise, it's not
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: a bad product to open if you find value boxes.
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: It's a big enough, good enough list of chase rookie
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: cards and thirty two parallels of each that like, you've
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: got a pretty decent shot at hitting something pretty decent
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: if you're ripping the wax. Compared to what we've gone
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: through over I would say the past few flagship releases.
- 1:08:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I fully agree that. That's honestly why I was
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: willing to jump in and rip this one. Even with
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: the hobby Box. I couldn't. I couldn't pull the trigger
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: on the Jumbo seeing that my hobby shop had at
- 1:09:05Speaker 2: fifty dollars above what tops dot Com did, not counting
- 1:09:11Speaker 2: shipping and things like that. Right, But yeah, you're absolutely
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: right with them. The deep rookie checklist here, the number
- 1:09:18Speaker 2: of big names, even though you are only pulling a
- 1:09:21Speaker 2: few of the numbered colored cards here, there's there's a
- 1:09:24Speaker 2: ton of variation, a ton of opportunities in there, and
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: it just takes one big card to make the box
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: worth it. Like I was looking at the Paul Skiings
- 1:09:33Speaker 2: Golden Mirror that I was out on eBay listed for
- 1:09:36Speaker 2: a pretty penny of three thousand dollars so far, so
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: I would pulled off on that one if you're working
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: through the full Golden mer set. But even like the
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: first silver packed Skiing sold for like one hundred and
- 1:09:47Speaker 2: thirty dollars, that'll come down fast that the next one
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: sold for forty. So like there's some value in being
- 1:09:53Speaker 2: the first first one out there because somebody just wants
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: to have the card and be guaranteed that they got
- 1:09:57Speaker 2: what they got. But product rip to your point, stay
- 1:10:03Speaker 2: away from the skiings, stay away from your holidays, give
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: them a little time to marinate, and then you'll you'll
- 1:10:08Speaker 2: be hunting some dollar boxes for murky debuts in no time.
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: Yes, and I see that Skiing's Golden Mirror. It's a
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: beautiful card. I will make sure to copy it and
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: put it onto ras ball. Also, don't buy that one
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: because the corners on the back are white as hell.
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: All right. Well, yeah, if you do end up pulling
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: any significant Paul Skins cards out there, certainly let us know.
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: You can reach the podcast at Cards Categories at gmail
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: dot com. Find the podcast on Twitter slash x at
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: cards Categories. You can also look into the show notes
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: if you want any cards and categories gear. We've got
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: winter hats, so it's starting to get cold here in
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: the Midwest, can certainly get in and get some of
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: those beanies. But we've also got T shirts other just
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: regular hats, and we will be putting in our twenty
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: twenty four season T shirt here pretty soon as well. Brooke,
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: let everybody know where they can find you on socials.
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: Yeah, find me over on Twitter, slash x at Jbrewer
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: one seven. Always find me on rasball if you want
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: to interact. Always just go back to those some of
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: those funneled articles. I'll get notified if you want to
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: pick those apart, and well I'll have a good discussion.
- 1:11:18Speaker 2: So how about you, Mike, where can they find you?
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: Yeah, you can find me on Twitter slash x at
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: m cool seven. Same thing for Blue Sky And yeah,
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: if you want to comment on this piece on rasball
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: dot com as well, we will respond there. So certainly
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: you've got lots of ways to reach out to us
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: if you want to and get any advice on any
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: cards or any other fantasy things, because yeah, it wasn't
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: a very big fantasy episode for us here, but we
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: will get further and further into cards as we get
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: deeper and deeper into the winter. And yeah, I don't
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: about you. But it's like prime withdrawal season of not
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: being able to find like set your fantasy lineups. So
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: it still getting out of that process. It's it's gonna
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: be sad once we're out of baseball here in a
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: couple of weeks.
- 1:12:03Speaker 2: Oh yeah, we're coming right to that timeframe, which is
- 1:12:05Speaker 2: like the worst two weeks of the year of like
- 1:12:07Speaker 2: after all your weird offseason fantasy depends on what leagues
- 1:12:10Speaker 2: you play in or are working through arbitrations and things like that,
- 1:12:14Speaker 2: or your World series, and it's like two weeks before
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: you can actually trade and things like that because you
- 1:12:19Speaker 2: want all the dust to settle, and then everyone's just
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: picking options, like that's just the dead zone. So we'll
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: be talking about cards during that time because we got
- 1:12:26Speaker 2: to keep ourselves steady. But there'll be some fun times
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: ahead as we get into the off season here. Sure
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: we'll be doing some predictions, some fun picks and jumping
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: ahead looking at what next year is gonna look like
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: for the twenty twenty five fantasy season.
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: As well exactly. And we haven't missed anything in the
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: baseball game. It's still two nothing in the sixth inning,
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: So let's get to of this hopefully we can see
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: some runs and I enjoy the rest of this evening
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: and this NLCS Game three. So thanks everybody for checking
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: out the pod rate and review us wherever you're listening,
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: and we'll see you same time, same place next week.
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: Take care, b
