- 0:04Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to the Overland Journal podcast. I am
- 0:07Speaker 1: your host, Scott Brady, fresh back from a little sailing expedition,
- 0:12Speaker 1: and I'm here with my co host Matt Scott.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Who kept his seat, did not get sea legs. I
- 0:18Speaker 2: stayed on dry land where I belong.
- 0:20Speaker 1: That was actually the most bizarre part of it was
- 0:23Speaker 1: after almost a month at sea getting back on dry land.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Now I know why Jack Sparrow walks the way that
- 0:29Speaker 1: he does and pirates do. Like you, they talk about
- 0:32Speaker 1: a drunken sailor. You're not drunk, you just can't walk yet.
- 0:36Speaker 1: So yeah, it was oh and and then you wake
- 0:40Speaker 1: up in the middle of the night, you know, because
- 0:42Speaker 1: I've been on a sailboat for that long. Like I
- 0:44Speaker 1: was in a hotel room and I woke up in
- 0:46Speaker 1: the middle of the night and the whole room was moving,
- 0:49Speaker 1: like the boat was. Like it's just you don't get
- 0:52Speaker 1: used to it. It takes like about a week to
- 0:54Speaker 1: stop following me. My question is like, how does that
- 0:56Speaker 1: translate to going into the bathroom? Like did you did
- 0:58Speaker 1: you like have your first solid on solid ground.
- 1:01Speaker 2: You're like like, like did you have to book like
- 1:04Speaker 2: a handicap?
- 1:05Speaker 1: Sweet? So you're like, that would have been a good idea.
- 1:08Speaker 1: That would have been a really good idea. Thanks to
- 1:10Speaker 1: this week's sponsor, GCI Outdoor. Whether you're heading out for

- 1:55Speaker 1: because going to the bathroom on the boat is a challenge, right,
- 1:57Speaker 1: because it's all about triangulation. You're trying to triangulate. Yeah,
- 2:01Speaker 1: You're trying to have many points of contact, which of
- 2:05Speaker 1: course becomes complicated when you're trying to go to.
- 2:07Speaker 2: The bath So yeah, I want to just I just
- 2:11Speaker 2: went for an aqua bog.
- 2:12Speaker 1: You're right on the ocean. What is an aqua bog?
- 2:15Speaker 1: It is an Australian term for taking ash in the water.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Oh well, there you go, guys. This is this is educating.
- 2:23Speaker 1: This has been educational for all of our listeners. Welcome
- 2:26Speaker 1: to Australian culture. One oh one with your host. That
- 2:29Speaker 1: sounds terrible who briefly lived there? Now it was amazing.
- 2:32Speaker 1: I mean, just there are so many parallels to overland
- 2:35Speaker 1: travel that we're going to talk about at a future episode.
- 2:38Speaker 1: We'll get Brian McVicar's who is part of our team
- 2:41Speaker 1: and was with me on the trip. And for those
- 2:44Speaker 1: who want to kind of follow along with what's happening,
- 2:47Speaker 1: it's on Instagram. It's at Kailani Expedition. The goal was
- 2:51Speaker 1: to sail from Long Beach, so essentially Los Angeles. We
- 2:55Speaker 1: sailed across the Pacific Ocean and we ended up at
- 2:59Speaker 1: the Aleutian Island and into the Burying Sea, and the
- 3:02Speaker 1: team continued on after I flew out, and they went
- 3:05Speaker 1: on to the island of Au two, which is where
- 3:07Speaker 1: they're at right now, which is the both the westernmost
- 3:10Speaker 1: and the easternmost point of the United States because it's
- 3:13Speaker 1: across the International date Line. Oh cool, And I think
- 3:16Speaker 1: that that's where Sarah Palin thought she could see Russia from.
- 3:19Speaker 1: But it's that close. It's very close to Russia. Yeah. So,
- 3:22Speaker 1: but it was. It was a fascinating experience. It does
- 3:25Speaker 1: get pretty rowdy in the Pacific, but it was not
- 3:28Speaker 1: that good in some of.
- 3:28Speaker 2: The videos that you were sending me. I was like,
- 3:30Speaker 2: I was getting seasick, like Impresscott.
- 3:33Speaker 1: Yeah, my couch. That'll be my one little tip that
- 3:36Speaker 1: we'll talk about today and then we'll get into more
- 3:38Speaker 1: stuff on that podcast. But there is this relief it's
- 3:42Speaker 1: called a relief band. It's designed by Johnson and Johnson
- 3:45Speaker 1: for cancer patients that are having nausea, but it works
- 3:49Speaker 1: just as well for people who get seasick or get
- 3:52Speaker 1: motion sickness in a car or whatever. It is a
- 3:55Speaker 1: FDA approved device and it works for it. Oh you've
- 3:58Speaker 1: used it, that's right about one? Yes, right, Because you
- 4:01Speaker 1: make yourself sick in your car. I make I now.
- 4:04Speaker 2: Have the ability to make myself sick when I'm driving fast,
- 4:07Speaker 2: which is fun.
- 4:08Speaker 1: That's unfortunate. Worked out like our raced cars for fifteen
- 4:11Speaker 1: years straight. You get an old man hit your thirties
- 4:14Speaker 1: and things just go downhill.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Like it sucks man, Like I, I just want to
- 4:20Speaker 2: go back to a scooter in a backpack in Asia
- 4:22Speaker 2: or something.
- 4:22Speaker 1: But like you can.
- 4:24Speaker 2: You did that option, you know, my scientific, highly scientific,
- 4:28Speaker 2: very scientific test. I whilst hungover, went and drove with
- 4:32Speaker 2: the worst driver I know, and I was fine. Oh
- 4:37Speaker 2: normally thirty seconds had been would have been in a
- 4:39Speaker 2: not fun time.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Totally fine. Yeah, there you go, There you go.
- 4:43Speaker 2: It's pretty basically the CDC. So I read it on Facebook. Yeah,
- 4:48Speaker 2: so it does apply to overlanding. Those of you who
- 4:51Speaker 2: end up being a passenger in the vehicle and things
- 4:54Speaker 2: are not going well and you're feeling sick, take a
- 4:57Speaker 2: look at this relief ban.
- 4:58Speaker 1: We have no association other than factor that it works.
- 5:01Speaker 2: It just works right now and she's not driving, we'll
- 5:04Speaker 2: both kind of switch off using it.
- 5:05Speaker 1: It's like a little mini tens unit that goes on
- 5:08Speaker 1: your wrist and it it basically sent to me it
- 5:11Speaker 1: does mine looks like a fitbit. Yeah, and it just
- 5:13Speaker 1: kind of excites the vaga nerve in the wrist, which
- 5:16Speaker 1: hand kind of okay. It tingles Yeah, it tingles a
- 5:19Speaker 1: little bit, but it just completely takes away the whole
- 5:22Speaker 1: nodge of things. So that's how I made it across
- 5:24Speaker 1: the Pacific without losing my lunch. So, did you lose
- 5:27Speaker 1: your lunch at all? No, which was a miracle. It's
- 5:30Speaker 1: only because of this lost his lunch. He didn't know.
- 5:34Speaker 2: He's like total, he doesn't even work, he doesn't even
- 5:36Speaker 2: wear it. Brian's mister sailor.
- 5:37Speaker 1: He is mister sailor man totally. So listen to a
- 5:41Speaker 1: future episode and we talk about expedition sailing and how
- 5:44Speaker 1: it translates. There was a lot that we learned. There
- 5:45Speaker 1: was a lot that we learned that translates over to
- 5:47Speaker 1: overlanding as well. Yeah, that's how you guys eaten a
- 5:49Speaker 1: lot of like tuna did we did? That was amazing.
- 5:52Speaker 2: We had sashimi and nagiri right there. It's like it
- 5:55Speaker 2: sucks just as much as overlanding.
- 5:57Speaker 1: That's yeah, there's just less dirt and a better bathroom.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Okay yeah yeah, but waves, yeah, so you're just still
- 6:05Speaker 2: moving reath.
- 6:07Speaker 1: It was rowdy, but it was good. It was great.
- 6:10Speaker 1: And then in today's podcasts, we're going to talk about
- 6:13Speaker 1: something a little bit unusual, but it actually predates full
- 6:16Speaker 1: drive overland vehicles, and that is driving in a tool
- 6:20Speaker 1: drive or driving in a car or a sedan. I'm
- 6:22Speaker 1: going to go with car because some of the some
- 6:24Speaker 1: of the cars that I'm going to talk that I
- 6:26Speaker 1: want to drive around the world, they are fuel drive.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Yeah that's true. Yeah, but they're non traditional, non traditional.
- 6:33Speaker 1: But the reason why we want to talk about this
- 6:36Speaker 1: is to kind of reinforce what Matt and I do
- 6:38Speaker 1: our very best in this podcast to do, which is
- 6:42Speaker 1: to come back to this essence of overlanding, which is
- 6:45Speaker 1: vehicle based travel. And there have been families that have
- 6:49Speaker 1: driven across Eurasia in the Sedan that they used for
- 6:53Speaker 1: daily commuting in the UK. There are significant trips across
- 6:58Speaker 1: the Sahara that have been done with Dashevo. There have
- 7:00Speaker 1: been trips around the world that have been done in
- 7:04Speaker 1: the same Mercedes Sedan that you know people use as
- 7:08Speaker 1: a daily driver. So again coming back to this idea
- 7:11Speaker 1: that there are times that you absolutely do need a
- 7:14Speaker 1: fool of drive if the conditions require it. But if
- 7:16Speaker 1: you want to just go travel and see the world,
- 7:19Speaker 1: most of the world has either paved routes or they
- 7:22Speaker 1: have well maintained dirt routes, or they have dry, dryer
- 7:25Speaker 1: dirt routes. I mean, how many times, Matt, have you
- 7:28Speaker 1: and I have been someplace remote? I mean I've been.
- 7:31Speaker 1: I've been in Toyota Corolla exactly. I've been in like
- 7:34Speaker 1: low range and a Mercedes g Wagon, feeling like I'm
- 7:38Speaker 1: articulating or whatever. And then here comes like a bunch
- 7:41Speaker 1: of locals and a tursel and then when they get
- 7:44Speaker 1: to a tough spot, they all hop out and they
- 7:46Speaker 1: all push, and then they get through it and they
- 7:48Speaker 1: keep going on their way. So if the goal is travel,
- 7:51Speaker 1: if the goal is to just go see the world
- 7:53Speaker 1: and hopefully in an inexpensive of a way as possible,
- 7:56Speaker 1: a car can be a great solution for that.
- 7:59Speaker 2: Well, and I I've kind of touched on before. Not
- 8:02Speaker 2: everyone around, you know, I feel that overland travelers that
- 8:06Speaker 2: have not yet left America kind of get this idea
- 8:10Speaker 2: that I have to have a defender, they have to
- 8:12Speaker 2: have a land Cruiser. Yeah, well no, those those are
- 8:16Speaker 2: those are very expensive vehicles in America, which is the
- 8:19Speaker 2: cheapest car market in the world. You know, a land
- 8:21Speaker 2: Cruiser two hundred series in Australia is twice as much
- 8:24Speaker 2: as it is here.
- 8:25Speaker 1: It is, yeah, very nearly.
- 8:27Speaker 2: Twice as much. And I'm generalizing. Most people drive cars.
- 8:30Speaker 2: Most people don't even have a Toyota High Lox. Toyta
- 8:33Speaker 2: High Lox is like the fancy car. They'll have a
- 8:36Speaker 2: I don't know what's worse, a Nissan, yeah, or they'll
- 8:38Speaker 2: have a you'll typically sing Young or they'll have a
- 8:41Speaker 2: Great Wall, or they'll have you know, on a lot
- 8:44Speaker 2: of those vehicles.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Like the Great Wall.
- 8:46Speaker 2: It's a Chinese company that buys the tooling from GM
- 8:50Speaker 2: out of Thailand when they're done making the Colorado. So
- 8:53Speaker 2: the next generation Great Wall is going to look like
- 8:55Speaker 2: the current generation Colorado is. The last generation Colorado is
- 8:58Speaker 2: now a great Wall. You know, you see a lot
- 9:00Speaker 2: of that stuff, but you also see a lot of
- 9:02Speaker 2: people that can't even afford that. Now, I'm not trying
- 9:04Speaker 2: to paint this picture that the rest of the world
- 9:06Speaker 2: is impoverished. In America is the shining beacon in the world,
- 9:08Speaker 2: because we have so much poverty here and homelessness. But Corollas, Yeah, like,
- 9:12Speaker 2: what's that Nissan that's used like everywhere for taxis Oh, yeah.
- 9:17Speaker 1: You know what I'm talking about. It.
- 9:18Speaker 2: It's like an it's like an it's almost like a
- 9:21Speaker 2: versa like mid nineties CenTra or something like.
- 9:23Speaker 1: Totally.
- 9:24Speaker 2: I've seen those things like everywhere. Yeah, like places that
- 9:28Speaker 2: you could like barely like walk down. And I'm not
- 9:30Speaker 2: saying that they're like extraordinarily capable. It's just that when
- 9:33Speaker 2: that's what you have, well, their house is over there
- 9:35Speaker 2: and they're light.
- 9:36Speaker 1: Yeah. Most of them are front wheel drive, which is
- 9:39Speaker 1: going to be better than a real will drive truck
- 9:41Speaker 1: in most cases. Right, So let's talk about some of
- 9:43Speaker 1: the other upsides of the car. The initial investment is
- 9:46Speaker 1: very very low, lower, very very low. They get excellent
- 9:50Speaker 1: fuel economy, so the cost of your fuel on your
- 9:53Speaker 1: travels is much less. The other the other upside is
- 9:56Speaker 1: is you completely blend in, like you no longer have
- 9:59Speaker 1: this four whel drive that has like that everybody notices,
- 10:04Speaker 1: which even if you just think about security and safety aside,
- 10:08Speaker 1: just the fact that you could roll into a little
- 10:10Speaker 1: village and not create so much attention where you can
- 10:13Speaker 1: let people just go about their life and they're not
- 10:16Speaker 1: seeing this expedition vehicle descend upon their little town. You're
- 10:19Speaker 1: just another Mercedes Diesel Sedan that the taxi guy uses
- 10:25Speaker 1: it the same in the same town, and you come
- 10:27Speaker 1: in and you're likely to be able to find parts
- 10:30Speaker 1: for it, and it's gonna fly under the radar. You're
- 10:32Speaker 1: not gonna worry about the thing getting stolen. And I
- 10:34Speaker 1: think that there's a lot of advantages to that. I
- 10:36Speaker 1: love the old Mercedes wagons, Yeah, like the W one,
- 10:42Speaker 1: two threes. Yeah.
- 10:44Speaker 2: I know this lovely, lovely Spanish guy, super nice. He
- 10:48Speaker 2: lives in Dubai now, is kind of into the classic
- 10:50Speaker 2: car thing. He he did Central and South America. I
- 10:53Speaker 2: think he actually rolled his car in like Venezuela or
- 10:56Speaker 2: something that hit, but he was in a little Mercedes
- 10:59Speaker 2: Wagon and loved it.
- 11:01Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 11:02Speaker 2: You know, I have to say that that's very it's
- 11:04Speaker 2: a very romantic idea to take that, like the Mercedes
- 11:07Speaker 2: Wagon or the you know, the kind of advintage classic car.
- 11:09Speaker 2: I mean, you're not going to find parts, yeah, for
- 11:12Speaker 2: stuff like that. Mercedes is kind of the oddball because
- 11:15Speaker 2: you can still they kind of go further back with
- 11:18Speaker 2: servicing their vehicles. They do, and they have that worldwide
- 11:21Speaker 2: part worldwide parts network that is fantastic. But Kia's fund
- 11:26Speaker 2: is cheap cars that you can buy here are cheap
- 11:29Speaker 2: because they're the same cheap car that you can buy
- 11:31Speaker 2: everywhere and they share the same parts.
- 11:32Speaker 1: And that would probably be a thing to start with
- 11:34Speaker 1: is look for a vehicle that's available in the United
- 11:39Speaker 1: States that's also sold in many other countries. And that's
- 11:42Speaker 1: probably like an example of one that's a little older.
- 11:46Speaker 1: Is you can get these turbocharged and normally aspirated diesel
- 11:50Speaker 1: Mercedes Sedans. I've seen them for sale for three, four
- 11:54Speaker 1: or five grand, made well, they have an om motor
- 11:58Speaker 1: in them, They're made very well. They have an independent
- 12:00Speaker 1: rear suspension. You can put a limited slip differential in
- 12:04Speaker 1: the back. Not many who listen to this may know
- 12:07Speaker 1: of Chris Scott, but Chris Scott is literally one of
- 12:10Speaker 1: the og overlanders. He has a great series of books. Yeah,
- 12:13Speaker 1: he wrote a series of bibles about overlanding extensive travels
- 12:18Speaker 1: throughout the throughout northern Africa, and he did a lot
- 12:22Speaker 1: of long trips throughout the Sahara, including sand tracks in
- 12:27Speaker 1: W one, two three and other variants of the Mercedes Sedans.
- 12:30Speaker 1: And he would put a very small coil lift on them,
- 12:33Speaker 1: like maybe about an inch or so. A slightly taller tire,
- 12:36Speaker 1: steel wheels, limited slip differential. In the back you would
- 12:40Speaker 1: add some very light skid plating underneath to protect the
- 12:43Speaker 1: sump and a couple other things. And he drove around
- 12:46Speaker 1: Northern Africa in the same thing that the taxi guide drives,
- 12:49Speaker 1: so you're totally under the radar.
- 12:51Speaker 2: We did like one hundred or so miles of the
- 12:53Speaker 2: old Dakhar course in Morocco, and I think it was
- 12:56Speaker 2: a Dacia.
- 12:57Speaker 1: Yeah, there you go, Daisy luster.
- 12:58Speaker 2: Yeah, it wasn't a Duster, it was a it was
- 13:01Speaker 2: I call it the African Corolla. It had like had
- 13:03Speaker 2: like a ninety liter fuel tank and a little turbo diesel,
- 13:07Speaker 2: but it actually had it looked like a lifted Corolla.
- 13:10Speaker 1: Yeah. Perfect, It did great. Yeah, like I had fun.
- 13:13Speaker 1: It was cool. It was a rental car.
- 13:15Speaker 2: It was the most capable car on the old dak
- 13:18Speaker 2: Car course in Morocco that day.
- 13:21Speaker 1: Yeah, for sure. We saw very few other people. Yeah, well,
- 13:25Speaker 1: then what do they say, every every rental car is
- 13:28Speaker 1: a world drive. Yeah, but what's the fastest car rental car?
- 13:32Speaker 1: What's the best car off road? A rental car unless
- 13:35Speaker 1: you're renting from Nina Barlow, who's very nice and please
- 13:38Speaker 1: don't wreck her rental cars. Yeah, yeah, that's right. That's
- 13:40Speaker 1: one exception.
- 13:41Speaker 2: Yeah, but otherwise rental car is very capable, incredibly capable
- 13:45Speaker 2: off road.
- 13:45Speaker 1: Yeah. So there's a lot of upside to this whole
- 13:48Speaker 1: idea of a car. And I think that they get
- 13:51Speaker 1: underserved in this idea of doing trips around the world.
- 13:54Speaker 1: And if we go back in time, if we go
- 13:56Speaker 1: back historically, I mean Aloha wonderwell her ninth teen twenties
- 14:01Speaker 1: trip around the world, it was the first female to
- 14:04Speaker 1: drive around the world. She did it in a Model
- 14:06Speaker 1: T again tool drive vehicle. On the roads.
- 14:08Speaker 2: I suspect back then we're pretty rough. They were probably
- 14:11Speaker 2: pretty bad, not so great, and then probably wasn't that bad.
- 14:14Speaker 2: Yeah that's true.
- 14:15Speaker 1: Yeah, But I remember when I was getting ready to
- 14:19Speaker 1: go on the ferry in France to go over to
- 14:23Speaker 1: Tangiers for the Outback Challenge race. And I've got this
- 14:26Speaker 1: race prepped, land Cruiser. We're ready to go do this
- 14:29Speaker 1: amazing adventure. And all of these little douchevos, these little
- 14:33Speaker 1: citron the citron, right, who makes the douche Yeah that's
- 14:35Speaker 1: two yeah, duchebo. And then they all they all line
- 14:40Speaker 1: up on the same ferry and they're going to go
- 14:42Speaker 1: basically on the same route. I mean, are they Yeah,
- 14:46Speaker 1: they were, Well, yeah, that's kind of what I want
- 14:47Speaker 1: to do. Is I just want to like, we should
- 14:49Speaker 1: just troll other Overlanders with duche vos. Let's take Laura's
- 14:52Speaker 1: Super and go to the Mojave Road.
- 14:54Speaker 2: Yeah, that would be too easy, but with us, a
- 14:58Speaker 2: Super is a great example.
- 14:59Speaker 1: Yeah, now that we're moving kind of into this idea
- 15:01Speaker 1: of the all will drives, but we have seen more
- 15:05Speaker 1: and more aftermarket support for the Subarus and they I
- 15:08Speaker 1: think they look great. They got fun little motors in them,
- 15:10Speaker 1: real cool.
- 15:11Speaker 2: But Okay, So Laura, my fiance, she has a suber
- 15:15Speaker 2: cross track, great car, very well made. Does not have
- 15:19Speaker 2: enough power to run the ac sufficiently. Oh, nor does
- 15:23Speaker 2: it have enough power to accelerate in a way that
- 15:27Speaker 2: I feel is acceptable.
- 15:28Speaker 1: Yeah, but she loves it. She loves it. But if
- 15:30Speaker 1: you think so, let's think an eight stock.
- 15:33Speaker 2: You got to leave them stock because she'll get she
- 15:36Speaker 2: gets thirty point eight miles the gallon. I know this
- 15:37Speaker 2: because it hasn't changed. But I've talked to people that
- 15:39Speaker 2: have lifted these, that do modest tires or they'll do
- 15:43Speaker 2: bumpers or this. I've talked to guys that get eleven
- 15:46Speaker 2: miles to the gallon because they're just so heavy and
- 15:51Speaker 2: dogged down.
- 15:52Speaker 1: So that's the key. If you do decide to travel
- 15:54Speaker 1: in a Subaru, maybe consider some skid plates. Yeah, maybe
- 15:58Speaker 1: consider a slightly operated spring. Definitely keep the weight off
- 16:02Speaker 1: the top. When you see a roof ten on the Subaru,
- 16:04Speaker 1: bad idea. Yeah, it's just going to greatly affect fuel economy.
- 16:08Speaker 1: And then you might as well just take a Tacoma
- 16:10Speaker 1: with you.
- 16:10Speaker 2: I think it's coma or four Runner. I mean, that's
- 16:12Speaker 2: that's that's the conclusion that I've come to very very
- 16:16Speaker 2: modest modifications. Is a lot of people ask me, I
- 16:18Speaker 2: I want to lift my super hun Like, what are
- 16:20Speaker 2: you trying to do with it? Yeah, because a stock
- 16:22Speaker 2: four Runner is gonna be better at everything and get
- 16:24Speaker 2: better gas mileage.
- 16:25Speaker 1: Yeah. Once you once you overmodify those superus, the and
- 16:28Speaker 1: they really struggle and then the transmissions get hot. They
- 16:30Speaker 1: don't have any low range CVTs. Yeah, yeah, but they're fun,
- 16:33Speaker 1: they're great. I get why people do it.
- 16:35Speaker 2: I don't get why people modify them incredibly extensively.
- 16:40Speaker 1: But isn't that the case for all of us, right,
- 16:42Speaker 1: like we all like h Like I think about my Tacoma,
- 16:45Speaker 1: my first Tacoma black, Yeah, I completely overmodify. Tacoma was fine.
- 16:49Speaker 1: It was, but it was like seven pounds. It was,
- 16:51Speaker 1: it was, it was, it was.
- 16:53Speaker 2: I always run into these Tacomas on the trail that
- 16:55Speaker 2: will like get they weigh as much as a full
- 16:58Speaker 2: sized truck, and then they get worse gas mileage, fuel economy.
- 17:02Speaker 1: So I think it's that same path. Like you start
- 17:04Speaker 1: off with the Tacoma when it's stock, it's super capable,
- 17:08Speaker 1: it exceeds all your expectations, it gets pretty good gas mileage,
- 17:12Speaker 1: it's super reliable, and then you start to try to
- 17:15Speaker 1: make it something like an expedition vehicle, and they're not
- 17:18Speaker 1: suited for that once they get heavy. If you keep
- 17:21Speaker 1: them really light, then take them around the world. Absolutely.
- 17:24Speaker 1: But it's the same thing I think for the Subaru.
- 17:27Speaker 1: If you get like a Forester, lots of space on
- 17:30Speaker 1: the inside, you could easily sleep inside it. Maybe you
- 17:33Speaker 1: uprate the springs a little bit to give you just
- 17:35Speaker 1: a little bit more clearance.
- 17:37Speaker 2: See I look at it the opposite way. I don't
- 17:39Speaker 2: think that you touch the suber I think the stoker.
- 17:42Speaker 2: The Subaru is the factory upgraded car that you want.
- 17:46Speaker 1: Yeah. True.
- 17:47Speaker 2: So if you were to take the Mercedes or the
- 17:50Speaker 2: you know whatever car Corolla Corolla, and you're like, okay,
- 17:54Speaker 2: well I'm going to figure this a little bit more
- 17:56Speaker 2: of this whatever.
- 17:57Speaker 1: No, that's just a stock suber It stock's true as
- 18:00Speaker 1: like eight to nine inches of ground clear. It's nine inches. Yeah, yeah, amazing.
- 18:04Speaker 1: So I think that's a good point.
- 18:06Speaker 2: You just leave it and then you drive it, yeah,
- 18:09Speaker 2: and then go back and then it's just another Subaru
- 18:13Speaker 2: that you get to go on eBay, drive into the ground. Yeah,
- 18:16Speaker 2: and it goes to like that place in Oregon where
- 18:18Speaker 2: all subrews go where they're fed kombucha and ip as,
- 18:23Speaker 2: you know, very Oregon. Yeah, you know that's where that's
- 18:26Speaker 2: where all subers go. I didn't know that cats go
- 18:28Speaker 2: to the farm. Subaru's go to Oregon. Sorry, I like's
- 18:34Speaker 2: going to trigger some people. Some people have had their
- 18:36Speaker 2: parents tell them that the cat was going to the
- 18:37Speaker 2: farm and didn't go to the farm. I was told
- 18:39Speaker 2: that the cat was going to the farm, and then
- 18:41Speaker 2: I found out it actually did go to a farm.
- 18:44Speaker 1: I really did it really go to a farm.
- 18:46Speaker 2: I mean, that's why my mom told me, realizing that
- 18:48Speaker 2: maybe she was just trying to cover your track.
- 18:52Speaker 1: Cats never go to the farm, so Kitty Kitty didn't
- 18:55Speaker 1: go to the farm. Y didn't go to the farm. No.
- 18:58Speaker 2: I just like to make fun of Oregon, and mainly
- 19:00Speaker 2: because of Caleb Wallace, who's a friend of mine that
- 19:03Speaker 2: works for me. He's from Oregon and he's young, so
- 19:06Speaker 2: he catches all of the flak in our office.
- 19:08Speaker 1: All of the Oregon.
- 19:09Speaker 2: Drags kombucha, which is sometimes like when I feel like
- 19:14Speaker 2: my gut needs a little boost. I don't know, That's
- 19:17Speaker 2: what I tell myself because they don't really taste that good,
- 19:20Speaker 2: so you hope that what you're doing is healthy.
- 19:22Speaker 1: I do those yack cult probiotic things because we're getting older.
- 19:27Speaker 2: Matt, Well, okay, this is because I'm a sucker for advertising.
- 19:32Speaker 2: Is we went to this baseball game in Tokyo like
- 19:34Speaker 2: two years ago, and now I'm a fan of the
- 19:37Speaker 2: Tokyo yack cult swallows. Okay, interesting thing. Every baseball player
- 19:41Speaker 2: has their own song and chant and it's wonderful. They
- 19:44Speaker 2: have these little lovely Japanese girls that walk around with
- 19:47Speaker 2: little beer kegs on their back and you get fresh
- 19:49Speaker 2: draft beer and like these lovely Japanese people were sharing
- 19:52Speaker 2: snacks with us.
- 19:53Speaker 1: It was the coolest experience ever. So you went to
- 19:55Speaker 1: a baseball game in Japan. Oh, yeah, we love going
- 19:57Speaker 1: to baseball games in Japan. I think that was amazing.
- 19:59Speaker 2: That's like one of my things that I'm doing post
- 20:01Speaker 2: COVID basbaok in Japan.
- 20:04Speaker 1: I would love to do that.
- 20:04Speaker 2: I have like all these obscure Japanese baseball shirts, Like
- 20:08Speaker 2: one of them is green and it has like the
- 20:10Speaker 2: Yakult swallows little bird on it and all those Japanese stuff.
- 20:13Speaker 2: It could be like, I don't know what it says.
- 20:15Speaker 2: It could be saying something very derogatory about me, and
- 20:18Speaker 2: I wouldn't know, kind of like the the you know,
- 20:20Speaker 2: the tattoos that people get and the Chainese or Chinese.
- 20:24Speaker 1: And it's like, yeah, silly American whatever it says on it. Yeah,
- 20:28Speaker 1: that was my politically crect correct interpretation of that. Back
- 20:32Speaker 1: to Suberus, so I think that I do think that
- 20:35Speaker 1: the suber is a good idea. Yeah, and you see
- 20:37Speaker 1: him everywhere in the world. Get a stock SUBERU. Make
- 20:40Speaker 1: sure it doesn't have terrible tires.
- 20:42Speaker 2: On it.
- 20:42Speaker 1: Yeah, quality tires, just like put fuel in it, go go.
- 20:46Speaker 1: Yeah exactly. It's really actually quite simple. So what what
- 20:50Speaker 1: other practical solutions would there be on the car side,
- 20:53Speaker 1: I mean very continental gt. Yeah, we got to we
- 20:55Speaker 1: got to get into the fun car ideas. Yeah.
- 20:57Speaker 2: I don't want to think about boring stuff anymore. Okay, no,
- 21:00Speaker 2: oh no, let's talk about boring stub little bit more.
- 21:01Speaker 2: Trying think about it. Because there were some turceells that
- 21:03Speaker 2: were all will drive. You know, there's astro vans.
- 21:07Speaker 1: Yeah, people have made advance, Like why don't people have
- 21:09Speaker 1: done some serious astrovan travel?
- 21:11Speaker 2: Wax poetic about taking a two wheel drive vanigan somewhere. Yeah,
- 21:15Speaker 2: my friend Zach has this lifted Toyota Previa. He was
- 21:19Speaker 2: like eighteen when he got that thing, probably from his
- 21:22Speaker 2: mom because that's a Toyota Previa. He's done, Smiley Rock,
- 21:26Speaker 2: he's done, like all these trails, it comes out with us.
- 21:28Speaker 2: You get a Toyota Sienna for like I don't know,
- 21:30Speaker 2: fifty bucks on a PS three, you could sleep inside
- 21:33Speaker 2: of it and they would probably still run forever forever
- 21:36Speaker 2: because those cars are meant to be neglected. Yeah, because
- 21:39Speaker 2: when you have like twelve screaming kids, and like you're
- 21:41Speaker 2: not thinking about a little change of kids, just like,
- 21:44Speaker 2: ooh a door handle, let's pour milk into it. That
- 21:46Speaker 2: is what the Toyota Sienna is made for. Therefore it
- 21:49Speaker 2: can't break. Yeah, that's probably true, and the fact that
- 21:52Speaker 2: it survives. Zach to this point, Zach is a lovely
- 21:55Speaker 2: young man. He is a lovely young man, except that
- 21:57Speaker 2: he's leaving me and he's going to he's going to
- 22:00Speaker 2: school to be a for a service ranger, which sounds awesome,
- 22:03Speaker 2: National park ranger. I know, I know it's going to
- 22:05Speaker 2: be a sad, sad state. Zach works in our complex.
- 22:08Speaker 2: What else is practical? Yeah, I know we're struggling with
- 22:11Speaker 2: this one. But there are all the cars that are
- 22:14Speaker 2: asking unpractical people practical questions. We're asked about practical cars.
- 22:18Speaker 2: We don't know anything about practical cars. Yeah, we tried,
- 22:21Speaker 2: we tried, We did try.
- 22:22Speaker 1: Okay.
- 22:23Speaker 2: Bentley Continental GT. Yeah, okay, So seriously, that's what I
- 22:26Speaker 2: want to drive around the world. You can buy a
- 22:29Speaker 2: very nice Bentley Continental GT right now for less than
- 22:33Speaker 2: the price thirty thousand miles for less than it's a
- 22:36Speaker 2: coma with thirty thousand miles.
- 22:38Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm just saying that. Yeah, that's true, and then
- 22:42Speaker 1: you just put like two Russian flags on the front
- 22:44Speaker 1: of it and then you just drive around the world
- 22:46Speaker 1: like a Russian oligarchy or Jeremy Clarkson, did you watch
- 22:49Speaker 1: that Madagascar special? No? I should have. Did he take
- 22:53Speaker 1: a Bentley Continental GT.
- 22:55Speaker 2: He took a lifted Bentley Continental GT with four Maax
- 22:58Speaker 2: tracks extremes on the top across Madagascar And now he
- 23:03Speaker 2: has it on his farm show and it like rips
- 23:05Speaker 2: around the farm and it's been apparently it's been flawless.
- 23:09Speaker 2: It's amazing. That is amazing, and I want it. Yeah, home,
- 23:12Speaker 2: I could have a Continental GT. Yeah yeah, But maybe
- 23:15Speaker 2: that's it.
- 23:16Speaker 1: Maybe that's because people look at something like a Continental
- 23:19Speaker 1: GT or maybe an Audi all will drive car that's
- 23:22Speaker 1: like a really nice performing vehicle, and they seem kind
- 23:25Speaker 1: of out of reach. But the reality is is a
- 23:28Speaker 1: lot of those things depreciate so quickly quickly that you
- 23:31Speaker 1: could buy this beautiful driving sedan that is designed for
- 23:34Speaker 1: bad roads. I mean, they all if it's going to
- 23:37Speaker 1: be sold in Russia, it needs to survive bad roads.
- 23:39Speaker 1: So something like a Continental GT. I bet you with
- 23:42Speaker 1: some good tires.
- 23:43Speaker 2: And you know, I think I think for me, Bentley
- 23:46Speaker 2: is like a sentimental brand. You know when you look
- 23:49Speaker 2: at like Peeking to Paris. Even the modern recreations, there's
- 23:54Speaker 2: always you know, probably not Bentley blowers, but you know
- 23:58Speaker 2: three leader Bentley's and twenties and third stuff.
- 24:00Speaker 1: They were they were used.
- 24:03Speaker 2: As overland vehicles way back when because he didn't have
- 24:06Speaker 2: the infrastructure.
- 24:07Speaker 1: Well, if you look at Lawrence of Arabia, Rolls Royce,
- 24:10Speaker 1: that was a Rolls Royce tool drive. You can get
- 24:13Speaker 1: a Rolls Royce.
- 24:14Speaker 2: It's not the Corniche, it's the silver Shadow too, Okay,
- 24:18Speaker 2: for like five grand. If you look like for what
- 24:21Speaker 2: some people pay for rooftop tents, you can get.
- 24:25Speaker 1: A Rolls Royce. There you go, and you can sleep
- 24:28Speaker 1: in the back.
- 24:28Speaker 2: So maybe that's the direction we should go in. This
- 24:30Speaker 2: is like, what is the most obscure, crazy thing that
- 24:33Speaker 2: you can drive for the cost of a new Riff
- 24:37Speaker 2: and an outfitted to Coma. An outfitted to Coma.
- 24:40Speaker 1: I mean, oh, that's that's a lot outfitted.
- 24:42Speaker 2: To Coma's sixty grand Now, yeah, that's right a realistically, Yeah.
- 24:46Speaker 1: That opens up pretty much any car. I had some people.
- 24:49Speaker 2: Telling me in southern California that they were selling to
- 24:51Speaker 2: Coma's for twenty thousand dollars over sticker for the tierty ones.
- 24:54Speaker 1: Yeah, because they just aren't available. It's crazy.
- 24:57Speaker 2: Like the local Ford dealer has like that at Bronco Sport,
- 25:01Speaker 2: which is really just a Ford escape and drag, they
- 25:04Speaker 2: wanted a five thousand dollars market premium for that.
- 25:06Speaker 1: It wasn't even like the cool one.
- 25:08Speaker 2: It's just like a car that you can currently actually buy,
- 25:13Speaker 2: and it was five thousand dollars over.
- 25:14Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean they say twenty eight thirty percent increase
- 25:18Speaker 1: in used car prices in the last year.
- 25:20Speaker 2: My friend Yusuf sent me this graph of everything. Yeah,
- 25:24Speaker 2: it's nuts, it's out of control.
- 25:25Speaker 1: Thirty yeah, thirty seven percent year over Well, when I
- 25:28Speaker 1: just got the GMC eight four, they were just not
- 25:31Speaker 1: available in any close configuration, so I just figured I'm
- 25:35Speaker 1: going to order it, and then I waited the couple
- 25:37Speaker 1: months and it showed up exactly how I wanted. And
- 25:40Speaker 1: I think given the fact of used prices, you just
- 25:43Speaker 1: buy a new one and wait and get exactly what
- 25:45Speaker 1: you want.
- 25:47Speaker 2: What I would love to see happen from this I
- 25:49Speaker 2: regular listens to the podcast will know that I buy
- 25:52Speaker 2: and sell cars all the time. It's a I'm good
- 25:55Speaker 2: at seeing market trends and I'll buy a car driving
- 25:57Speaker 2: it for a little bit. Particularly lately, cars are going up,
- 26:01Speaker 2: buy something desirable before it's desirable.
- 26:03Speaker 1: And you have a free car. That's what I do.
- 26:06Speaker 2: I hate buying cars from dealers. It is the worst
- 26:08Speaker 2: experience is It's very rough, you know, And I wonder
- 26:13Speaker 2: if if the auto industry was smart, why not just
- 26:15Speaker 2: go on the website. I want this truck and it
- 26:19Speaker 2: shows up to your house.
- 26:20Speaker 1: Like Tesla's do. Yeah, that'll happen, isn't. Isn't Carvana Though
- 26:24Speaker 1: Carvana's used cars, it does that. There's a few like that,
- 26:28Speaker 1: and people are having great experiences with that stuff. Yeah,
- 26:30Speaker 1: they're buying off lease vehicles that are in good shape,
- 26:34Speaker 1: low mileage. They show up on a truck, on a
- 26:38Speaker 1: tow truck and they put it in your driveway if
- 26:41Speaker 1: you and then you take it for test drive. If
- 26:43Speaker 1: you don't want it, they'll take it back for you.
- 26:44Speaker 1: I think there's like a small fee or something, but it.
- 26:48Speaker 2: Beats getting put into the room with the little finance
- 26:51Speaker 2: guy who's like, well, if you don't buy this protection package,
- 26:54Speaker 2: we're not gonna be able to give you a good
- 26:55Speaker 2: interest ry. Like all of that just crap games come
- 26:59Speaker 2: along with it. There's got to be some expiration date
- 27:03Speaker 2: to that torture.
- 27:03Speaker 1: I think, like.
- 27:05Speaker 2: Have a service department. What happens when car I mean
- 27:07Speaker 2: cars were coming more and more and more reliable when
- 27:10Speaker 2: I was working for Lander over over ten years ago.
- 27:14Speaker 2: Even at that point, they were basically realizing that they
- 27:18Speaker 2: needed to redesign how a lot of their dealerships function
- 27:22Speaker 2: because they were used to having so many mechanics and
- 27:24Speaker 2: so many cars working on them, using land rovers the
- 27:27Speaker 2: obvious example. Well, now landovers are coome a lot more
- 27:29Speaker 2: reliable and they don't have as many service guys. So
- 27:32Speaker 2: cars continue to get more reliable. Once the last time
- 27:35Speaker 2: your cell phone just quit working, you know, like we
- 27:38Speaker 2: used to see all of those cell phone repair shops.
- 27:41Speaker 2: You don't really see those that much anymore. Is they're
- 27:44Speaker 2: waterproof now? And yeah the phones are waterproof, you know
- 27:47Speaker 2: they have the crazy glass. Now when we start looking
- 27:50Speaker 2: at electric cars, like what is the point of the
- 27:52Speaker 2: dealership going to be?
- 27:54Speaker 1: Yeah, it's going to be very different. I mean even
- 27:57Speaker 1: like you said with land I remember talking to Raid
- 27:59Speaker 1: and our from land Rover Las Vegas, and he said,
- 28:01Speaker 1: that guy, yeah, amazing, going a new car. That's the
- 28:05Speaker 1: guy from Landover Las Vegas exactly. And I remember talking
- 28:09Speaker 1: to him about land Rover reliability. He's like, Scott, I
- 28:11Speaker 1: have one third thirty percent of the texts I used
- 28:14Speaker 1: to have. So that means if you just take that
- 28:16Speaker 1: as a simple translation, that land Rovers are now two
- 28:20Speaker 1: thirds better in the liability exactly than they used to be.
- 28:23Speaker 1: And so cars are so much better. And that's why
- 28:26Speaker 1: I think like even this idea of taking cars around
- 28:29Speaker 1: the world. I mean we're seeing think about all of
- 28:31Speaker 1: the tool drive vans, like you said, the Vanigins, and
- 28:34Speaker 1: I don't think that we have to wrap our heads
- 28:36Speaker 1: around so much. If you want to drive to Oshuaya,
- 28:38Speaker 1: you can drive all the way to Ushuaia without needing
- 28:42Speaker 1: a fool drive. That is guaranteed. Now, you may get
- 28:44Speaker 1: into a little bit of snow, so you have to
- 28:46Speaker 1: pay attention to that, so drive it in the right
- 28:49Speaker 1: time of year. But the reality is, if the goal
- 28:52Speaker 1: is I want to go see South America, and I
- 28:55Speaker 1: want to do it as inexpensive as possible, you're probably better.
- 28:58Speaker 2: Off doing it in the Yeah, on the exact opposite
- 29:01Speaker 2: of the affordable spectrum. Ferrari actually did the Pan American
- 29:04Speaker 2: Highway maybe in two thousand and five to two thousand
- 29:08Speaker 2: and five, Okay, in six twelve. Skaglietties that it's another
- 29:12Speaker 2: obscure choice. You can buy something that's now don't don't
- 29:15Speaker 2: do that with the Ferrari.
- 29:16Speaker 1: That'd be bad. They would buy it.
- 29:18Speaker 2: What I was saying, in two thousand and six, it
- 29:20Speaker 2: was possible to take a very long wheelbased four sea
- 29:24Speaker 2: front engine V twelve supercar from Ushuaia to the United States.
- 29:30Speaker 1: Yeah, totally. And there's and the thing is is, there's
- 29:32Speaker 1: also some really great roads along the way. So I mean,
- 29:35Speaker 1: I think about changing your what you're doing. Yeah, you're
- 29:38Speaker 1: going to focus on the coastal routes and these beautiful
- 29:40Speaker 1: I mean, I think about the time that I rode
- 29:44Speaker 1: some motogoozies in Italy and we did some dirt with it,
- 29:48Speaker 1: you know, when we were in Sardinia, we did some dirt,
- 29:50Speaker 1: but I don't even remember that. I literally don't remember
- 29:52Speaker 1: the dirt because the roads were so magic. It was
- 29:56Speaker 1: like it was a high point travel thing. For me,
- 29:58Speaker 1: it was just absolutely glorious. And to do that like
- 30:02Speaker 1: an Eventley Continental GT or in a Subaru right would
- 30:05Speaker 1: be super fun because you could haul but going around there, yeah,
- 30:09Speaker 1: I mean there's the list of obscure vehicles that have
- 30:12Speaker 1: done traditional overland roots is pretty significant. It is.
- 30:18Speaker 2: There's an auto journal in Australia that took an R
- 30:21Speaker 2: eight to Birdsville.
- 30:22Speaker 1: That's right. We feature that in Overline Dural years ago.
- 30:25Speaker 1: You know, there's even did Big Red with it. Yeah,
- 30:27Speaker 1: there's all kinds of crazy things that you can do.
- 30:29Speaker 2: I mean obviously, like that's not where we are delving
- 30:33Speaker 2: into the world of an exhibition.
- 30:35Speaker 1: Total esoteric stuff.
- 30:37Speaker 2: Yeah, like it's you know, again, let's work on that
- 30:39Speaker 2: sixty thousand dollars budget of a Tacoma and all the
- 30:42Speaker 2: stuff that you need. I guess the benefit is that
- 30:45Speaker 2: you then do have a place to sleep yep, But
- 30:47Speaker 2: oftentimes you're paying for places to sleep, especially if you're
- 30:51Speaker 2: in populated areas on the American like when I ran
- 30:54Speaker 2: that hot when I ran Panama Passage, like that was
- 30:57Speaker 2: the place to camp in Panama City if you needed
- 31:00Speaker 2: all your stuff.
- 31:00Speaker 1: Nine to eleven could be cool, And there's been eleven.
- 31:03Speaker 2: Sure, there's been a lot of on the trip nine
- 31:05Speaker 2: eleven that the guy behind four hil four Coffee did
- 31:09Speaker 2: the peaking to Paris in a nine to twelve, which
- 31:13Speaker 2: for the Orsha unwashed that just means it's a four
- 31:16Speaker 2: cylinder nine to eleven from because those are sixties seventies,
- 31:19Speaker 2: there's a lot that you can do.
- 31:20Speaker 1: Because they're because they're kind of like the Volkswagen Beetle.
- 31:23Speaker 1: They're kind of like a Volkswagen Beetle, right there are
- 31:25Speaker 1: a rear engine, yeah, rear world drive, very lightweight. I've
- 31:29Speaker 1: seen you know, and we've even seen the modified which
- 31:32Speaker 1: you know that starts to look great.
- 31:33Speaker 2: That's why that's why you start to see like the
- 31:35Speaker 2: rally nine to eleven, like the Safari, like Kevin Marshall
- 31:37Speaker 2: hazed that Safari nine to eleven. They did that whole
- 31:41Speaker 2: like several hundred mile off road trip with all nine
- 31:44Speaker 2: to eleven air cooled Safaris, so fun, no problems because
- 31:47Speaker 2: they're very well engineered cars. Now nine to eleven we're
- 31:51Speaker 2: having this conversation five or ten years ago, you could
- 31:54Speaker 2: have bought an air cool nine to eleven for like
- 31:56Speaker 2: the gum on the bottom of your this for this
- 31:58Speaker 2: used Birkenstock, I could have gotten an air cold nine
- 32:02Speaker 2: to eleven.
- 32:03Speaker 1: Now they're like one hundred grand y Yeah, like a
- 32:05Speaker 1: good one.
- 32:05Speaker 2: It's just crazy, but they're all Also there are also
- 32:08Speaker 2: not so collector nine to eleven's that you can still
- 32:12Speaker 2: get for a bargain.
- 32:13Speaker 1: You know what, what would be some good examples of that?
- 32:15Speaker 2: Well, I mean right now it's tough, but you know
- 32:17Speaker 2: the nine four four is still reased even though it
- 32:19Speaker 2: has quadrupled in value. It's quadrupled in value from like
- 32:23Speaker 2: twenty five hundred dollars to ten thousand. Sure, you know,
- 32:26Speaker 2: the nine to twelve is still a decent value in
- 32:28Speaker 2: that space. The nine to ninety.
- 32:30Speaker 1: Six, which is a water cool car, is going up
- 32:33Speaker 1: in value.
- 32:34Speaker 2: They were just I think they hit this point where
- 32:36Speaker 2: they were old enough where they weren't cool, and then
- 32:39Speaker 2: they still cost a lot to maintain, so they dipped
- 32:41Speaker 2: and now people maintained them and the prices kind of
- 32:44Speaker 2: have gone back up.
- 32:45Speaker 3: Yeah, and now for a quick break from one of
- 32:47Speaker 3: our supporters, on X off Road. If you're driving or
- 32:50Speaker 3: writing on dirt this summer, don't leave home without the

- 33:31Speaker 3: off right now, thanks on X.
- 33:32Speaker 2: Well, like, let's talk about like not necessarily cars, but
- 33:36Speaker 2: these crossover SUVs there are. I mean that is if
- 33:40Speaker 2: you think of if in the nineteen eighties the average
- 33:43Speaker 2: shape of a car probably looked like a Crownvic.
- 33:46Speaker 1: Well now it looks like.
- 33:47Speaker 2: An Audi Q three or a Volkswagen Tiguan, or they
- 33:50Speaker 2: all look the same. They all look the same, right,
- 33:53Speaker 2: and they'd depreciate so much. I mean, you can get
- 33:56Speaker 2: you can get a Porsche Cayenne for ten grand that
- 33:59Speaker 2: has wheel drive and low range and air suspension. You
- 34:02Speaker 2: can get them with lockers, even rear locker, and they're
- 34:05Speaker 2: actually made pretty well. There's a lot of i think
- 34:08Speaker 2: non traditional things that that you can.
- 34:10Speaker 1: Look at, but I think the crossover makes a lot
- 34:12Speaker 1: of sense. It's kind of in that super super category
- 34:15Speaker 1: where you can get a Honda cr V and if
- 34:18Speaker 1: you if you look at the Element, like the Element
- 34:20Speaker 1: I think was probably the best example of this. Elements.
- 34:23Speaker 1: You could get an eat you know, the the little
- 34:25Speaker 1: topper on it, the e camp camper or some miner. Yeah,
- 34:29Speaker 1: that's right. So they they had this cool little pop
- 34:32Speaker 1: top that bolted on to the top of a of
- 34:35Speaker 1: an Element. They were boxy, little all will drive for cool,
- 34:39Speaker 1: super function people. I know of people who've driven them
- 34:41Speaker 1: all the way down through South America, including some off
- 34:44Speaker 1: road stuff. So does I mean Honda makes very good stuff? Yeah? Stuff.
- 34:50Speaker 2: Their stuff may not be marketed towards me. It mean,
- 34:53Speaker 2: you know, because I'm not a Honda Odyssey buyer and
- 34:55Speaker 2: I'm not a Honda a Cord buyer. There's nothing wrong
- 34:57Speaker 2: with those. But they're very good vehicles, very good vehicle,
- 35:00Speaker 2: very high quality.
- 35:01Speaker 1: I mean, think about it like a hunt of six
- 35:03Speaker 1: fifty motorcycle it's like classic Thumper runs forever until the
- 35:07Speaker 1: end of the end of days.
- 35:09Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly thirty years or something with all the fires
- 35:12Speaker 2: that we're having.
- 35:12Speaker 1: You know. So, but I think if you were to,
- 35:15Speaker 1: if you okay, if you were to, let's say we
- 35:17Speaker 1: take any sedan like even for me, I would say
- 35:20Speaker 1: that the thing that first comes to mind is one
- 35:23Speaker 1: of those Diesel Mercedes Sedans or the Bentley Continental. That
- 35:26Speaker 1: would be my two.
- 35:27Speaker 2: Choices, because one's just eccentric but also still a very
- 35:30Speaker 2: well made car.
- 35:31Speaker 1: So and the reason why I would pick that Mercedes
- 35:34Speaker 1: is when I first got into software consulting, I show
- 35:38Speaker 1: up that had a new Impala Chevy and Paula that
- 35:41Speaker 1: they were going to have me drive as my company vehicle.
- 35:43Speaker 1: The guy who ran the office drove this old W
- 35:46Speaker 1: one two three Mercedes Diesel and I'm like, well, because
- 35:51Speaker 1: I didn't want to. I did not want to drive
- 35:52Speaker 1: the Impala. I said, well, I'm the new guy and
- 35:55Speaker 1: I probably shouldn't have the new car this He want
- 35:58Speaker 1: the new car, and I'll take the old Mercedes, and
- 36:00Speaker 1: he was like and of course he was like, yeah,
- 36:01Speaker 1: I'll take the new car. And I ended up exactly
- 36:04Speaker 1: what I wanted, which was the Yeah, he got the
- 36:08Speaker 1: new car, and I got exactly what I wanted, which
- 36:10Speaker 1: was this old Mercedes Sedan. Other than the fact that
- 36:14Speaker 1: occasionally the door locks didn't work because they were vacuum operated,
- 36:17Speaker 1: this thing it had been part of the company for decades,
- 36:21Speaker 1: so long that the odometer stopped working, like a decade
- 36:25Speaker 1: before I started driving it. And I drove it for
- 36:27Speaker 1: years and years and years, and it was absolutely wonderful,
- 36:32Speaker 1: like everything about it. And that's like your sentimental car,
- 36:34Speaker 1: it is, and that if I was to say I'm
- 36:37Speaker 1: going to go buy a car and go do like
- 36:39Speaker 1: a fun overland route, like an obscure car, it would
- 36:43Speaker 1: be that Mercedes little Diesel, you know, little turbo Diesel
- 36:47Speaker 1: classic nineteen eighties Mercedes Sedan, or maybe the wagon because
- 36:51Speaker 1: you could sleep in the back of it. But that
- 36:52Speaker 1: would be my choice. But if I think about what
- 36:54Speaker 1: I would do to it, I would probably just put
- 36:56Speaker 1: a couple of skid plates under it, just to protect
- 36:58Speaker 1: the soft bits, and then make sure that I've got
- 37:01Speaker 1: the islet toe points on it just in case I
- 37:04Speaker 1: got to get pulled out of something. Throw some Max
- 37:06Speaker 1: tracks in the back, you know, have a couple of
- 37:08Speaker 1: Duffel bags and then maybe you sleep in it every
- 37:10Speaker 1: once in a while, but for the most part, I
- 37:12Speaker 1: would just go into little villages and stay there. Yeah.
- 37:15Speaker 1: Just make it all about not make it nothing to
- 37:17Speaker 1: do with the car. It's literally like taking a taxi,
- 37:20Speaker 1: just about all yeah, and you just make it literally
- 37:23Speaker 1: about the places that you're going to go to and
- 37:25Speaker 1: no one's going to notice it. They're not going to
- 37:26Speaker 1: notice you at the border crossings, they're not the cops
- 37:29Speaker 1: aren't going to pull you over. Yeah. I think so
- 37:32Speaker 1: for me, other than the Bentley Continental, because there is
- 37:34Speaker 1: a lot of appeal to that, I think that it
- 37:36Speaker 1: would be the Mercedes. So what would be your cheap
- 37:39Speaker 1: solution and what would be your uber solution?
- 37:42Speaker 2: I have to think of this because, like I joined
- 37:44Speaker 2: Excision Portland I was like fourteen, So my entire life
- 37:47Speaker 2: has just spent overland trucks or stupid sports cars. So
- 37:51Speaker 2: what do we define as cheap? Like what's my ceiling?
- 37:53Speaker 2: He Let's call it twelve grand?
- 37:55Speaker 1: Twelve grand, because I think that's about what you can
- 37:57Speaker 1: get those Mercedes, a nice clean to actually make it
- 38:01Speaker 1: to Let's just say, yeah, Miata, that would be fun.
- 38:05Speaker 1: That would be perfect.
- 38:06Speaker 2: Picked the thing up if you get stuck, that would
- 38:08Speaker 2: be portrayed it like a motorcycle trip.
- 38:09Speaker 1: That's probably what I would take. That would be so fun.
- 38:12Speaker 1: And then just stay in cool little hostels and hotels
- 38:14Speaker 1: and eco resorts.
- 38:16Speaker 2: Sometimes when traveling. I've found probably the cheapest way to
- 38:20Speaker 2: do it is in hostels and the occasional hotel with
- 38:24Speaker 2: you know, augmented with a backpacking tent. Yeah, all of
- 38:27Speaker 2: that is one doable in a Miada and they're very reliable.
- 38:30Speaker 2: They get crazy good gas knowledge. If you're Emmy Hall,
- 38:33Speaker 2: you can lift this. She does have a cool lifted one.
- 38:36Speaker 1: That's right, You guys got to check out Emmy Hall
- 38:39Speaker 1: on Instagram. She's got this lifted Mosada and she's an
- 38:44Speaker 1: amazing human being a journalist.
- 38:45Speaker 2: We accomplished racer accomplish journalist rights Forcinet.
- 38:49Speaker 1: What would my like, crele, I like the Miada one,
- 38:51Speaker 1: that's good.
- 38:52Speaker 2: My expensive car that I would take around the world
- 38:55Speaker 2: would be a nine to eleven.
- 38:56Speaker 1: That would be sweet. That would be so sweet. So
- 38:58Speaker 1: legit too.
- 38:58Speaker 2: Yeah, they're they're very they're very well made. I just
- 39:02Speaker 2: that would be it?
- 39:03Speaker 1: Is it? And you would want a recent one, or
- 39:04Speaker 1: you'd want an older nine to eleven. They're all good, Yeah,
- 39:07Speaker 1: that's the which. So then if they were all good,
- 39:11Speaker 1: I have I do think would be the solution. I
- 39:13Speaker 1: have very little experience with air cold cars. I've never
- 39:15Speaker 1: owned one.
- 39:16Speaker 2: Yeah it was actually the first car I drove was
- 39:19Speaker 2: an air cold nine eleven with my uncle. But that's
- 39:21Speaker 2: the last time I drove one was when I was very,
- 39:25Speaker 2: very very young. So yeah, I would probably go with.
- 39:29Speaker 1: A nine to ninety seven. Okay, so that what your
- 39:33Speaker 1: time for, that's two thousand and five to twenty twelve. Okay.
- 39:37Speaker 2: They're a little bit higher, Okay, their overhangs are a
- 39:41Speaker 2: little bit less.
- 39:42Speaker 1: Are they coiled sprung cars or they or how do
- 39:45Speaker 1: they save the suspension? They do have coil.
- 39:47Speaker 2: Springs, Yeah, yeah, No nine to elevens, to my knowledge,
- 39:51Speaker 2: have ever had air suspension. Okay, although some of them
- 39:54Speaker 2: have that front lift. Press a button and it usually
- 39:57Speaker 2: raises it at about fifteen milimeters Okay.
- 40:00Speaker 1: Some of the newer nine elevens are just so low
- 40:02Speaker 1: to the grounds.
- 40:02Speaker 2: My concern, ye, that would be a problem, where like
- 40:05Speaker 2: a nine nine to seven, you know, you could you
- 40:07Speaker 2: could buzz around in one of those pretty easy.
- 40:09Speaker 1: And you'd go coop or soft top? What would you go?
- 40:13Speaker 1: I would do a coop because I'm not a psychopath.
- 40:15Speaker 1: I don't I wasn't aware of that.
- 40:16Speaker 2: I don't know anybody who who drives cabriolet nine elevens.
- 40:21Speaker 2: Ok They're just they're just like they're like like they're
- 40:24Speaker 2: driving the same car, but they're not the same people.
- 40:28Speaker 1: It's like, okay, okay, it's like, think of the rovers.
- 40:31Speaker 1: We've learned so much today on this podcast.
- 40:33Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, opinionated Matt as usual. So there's land rover people, Okay,
- 40:38Speaker 2: there's the people who buy land rovers new right, and
- 40:40Speaker 2: then there's land river enthusiasts, right, and they're rarely the
- 40:43Speaker 2: same people. They are not the same people's right. That's
- 40:46Speaker 2: that's coop first. Cabriolet in the night, gotcha. I don't
- 40:49Speaker 2: think they can sell for half as much like they're
- 40:52Speaker 2: they're I don't want to say they're undesirable, but the
- 40:54Speaker 2: cheapest nine to elevens are always the convertibles in transvertible automatics,
- 40:58Speaker 2: the tiptronics, gotcha. Okay, this is good to know. So
- 41:02Speaker 2: until they went PDK. Okay, So Matt's really what I
- 41:05Speaker 2: don't know what a PDK is, so tell me Horsha
- 41:08Speaker 2: doppel Kuklon or something. It's it's it's a dual clutch
- 41:12Speaker 2: Porscha gearbox in German because an American we would just
- 41:15Speaker 2: say dual clutch. Yeah, in German it's eighty seven words
- 41:19Speaker 2: put together, so many syllables. Yeah, I love those German
- 41:25Speaker 2: engineers though. Yeah, they make amazing stuff.
- 41:28Speaker 1: Yes, it would be a nine to eleven for maybe
- 41:29Speaker 1: a manual? Did they make a nine to eleven all
- 41:32Speaker 1: will drive?
- 41:33Speaker 2: Every nine to eleven since eighty nine? Okay with the
- 41:37Speaker 2: nine three nine six four has been available with an
- 41:43Speaker 2: all wheel So would you do that? Would you go
- 41:45Speaker 2: with an oil drive just because of snow and you
- 41:47Speaker 2: want to go ski?
- 41:48Speaker 1: Maybe?
- 41:48Speaker 2: Yeah, like a Querra four or a Prayer four S
- 41:50Speaker 2: would be really fun. I get up never, I don't
- 41:52Speaker 2: have much experience. I did drive Brian Doors nine eleven turbo,
- 41:56Speaker 2: which is turbo engine, but same. It would be the
- 41:58Speaker 2: same chassis in drive line.
- 42:00Speaker 1: All wild drive, isn't it. It's like the way they
- 42:01Speaker 1: were a will drive ones go. Yeah.
- 42:03Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm only saying this because you already took the
- 42:05Speaker 2: Bentley like I mean, well, it can you can pick
- 42:09Speaker 2: the Bentley Okay, so let's talk Bentley here. Air suspension,
- 42:12Speaker 2: It's true, the little the little center console right in
- 42:14Speaker 2: front of the cup holders. You've got three different ride
- 42:17Speaker 2: height settings, you have different shock settings, and this is
- 42:20Speaker 2: for the older ones. You can you have a V twelve.
- 42:22Speaker 2: You you have, actually it's a W twelve. It's essential.
- 42:26Speaker 2: It's essentially two VR six Volkswagen Chiraco motors with a
- 42:31Speaker 2: common crank case.
- 42:32Speaker 1: Wow. That engine engine was actually initially designed to be
- 42:37Speaker 1: a W eighteen or an Audi supercar project, and then
- 42:41Speaker 1: it got shortened into production into a W eight, a
- 42:45Speaker 1: W twelve, and a W sixteen for the Veyron. Wow.
- 42:49Speaker 2: It's it is fascinating the things you need to know
- 42:52Speaker 2: in overlanding. But okay, yeah, so you can put a
- 42:54Speaker 2: light truck tire on those cars. They are so big
- 42:57Speaker 2: and so heavy they ride on SUV tire unless you
- 43:01Speaker 2: decide to go for performance summer tires. I mean, you
- 43:03Speaker 2: can put a Pirelli Scorpion Sure tire on there. So
- 43:07Speaker 2: that's a huge advantage to that vehicle. You have the
- 43:10Speaker 2: air suspension, so you can run up to forty five
- 43:13Speaker 2: mile an hour with a two inch lift Wow, that's huge.
- 43:17Speaker 2: They're very well made. It looks fantastic. It look fantastic.
- 43:21Speaker 2: They send all of the wrong signals. They are going
- 43:24Speaker 2: to be impossible to fix. Yeah, but they don't.
- 43:27Speaker 1: Really break that much. Like they're very well made. You know.
- 43:30Speaker 1: The Bentley thing.
- 43:31Speaker 2: Is is that it's a two hundred mile an hour
- 43:33Speaker 2: overland vehicle that you can get for less money than
- 43:37Speaker 2: a used A used What generation to come?
- 43:41Speaker 1: Are we on now? Third gen? Yeah?
- 43:42Speaker 2: Okay, So I have a buddy at the windsock in
- 43:45Speaker 2: Prescott that I drank at. He just got a twenty
- 43:47Speaker 2: fifteen tierty Sport or whatever, nice truck, like forty thousand
- 43:51Speaker 2: miles on it for thirty six thousand dollars. Go on
- 43:54Speaker 2: Google right now, and I guarantee you that you can
- 43:56Speaker 2: find a Bentley with less miles for the same or
- 43:58Speaker 2: less money.
- 43:59Speaker 1: And you have a W twelve, and you have a
- 44:01Speaker 1: W twelve and you can go two hundred miles an
- 44:03Speaker 1: hour at it.
- 44:03Speaker 2: Yeah, we're just in the track of course, listen or
- 44:08Speaker 2: we haven't given a license on this to be obscure. Yeah,
- 44:11Speaker 2: we're talking about cars. Like, if you want practical advice,
- 44:15Speaker 2: get a super up, get a Corolla. We covered that
- 44:17Speaker 2: in the first like four seconds of this podcast. So
- 44:20Speaker 2: when I get tweeted at you're super pretentious, yeah, yeah,
- 44:24Speaker 2: And well, because we're talking theoretical, right, So if you're
- 44:27Speaker 2: theoretically pretentious, that's just because you're having fun with an.
- 44:30Speaker 1: Idea, right I did.
- 44:32Speaker 2: I did theoretically own a Bentley for a while, but
- 44:34Speaker 2: I did theoretically also make money.
- 44:36Speaker 1: Yeah, so it didn't cost you anything, So it's not
- 44:38Speaker 1: pretentious at all. That's smart. Took it down Last Dollar
- 44:41Speaker 1: Ranch Road and tell your right. That was kind of fun.
- 44:43Speaker 2: Did have twenty twos though, which I didn't like the
- 44:45Speaker 2: twenty twos, but I had Perrelli scorpions on it like it.
- 44:48Speaker 1: I don't know. Because it's a heavy car, like they
- 44:51Speaker 1: weigh as much as a gew wagon. They are eligible
- 44:53Speaker 1: for Section one seventy nine rapid depreciation because they are
- 44:57Speaker 1: considered a commercial vehicle.
- 44:58Speaker 2: They're that heavy. The crossfil wait of over six thousand
- 45:01Speaker 2: pous that's why many.
- 45:03Speaker 1: People own them. That's why. Yeah, so we've now we've
- 45:06Speaker 1: now talked about our cheapest and our favorite. What would
- 45:10Speaker 1: probably be the best though, like if we were to
- 45:12Speaker 1: not do the cheapest and not the ultimate.
- 45:15Speaker 2: Best car that you could buy today to drive around
- 45:18Speaker 2: the world, in my opinion, E Class E four fifty
- 45:21Speaker 2: all train wagon.
- 45:22Speaker 1: Yeah, there you go. E classes are sold everywhere that's new,
- 45:26Speaker 1: and Mercedes is serviceable essentially in any country of the world.
- 45:30Speaker 1: They're driven by diplomats, they're driven by taxi drivers, they're
- 45:33Speaker 1: driven by politicians. So what would the cheap one be? Corolla? Yeah,
- 45:39Speaker 1: either that or like a RAV for CRV. I think
- 45:43Speaker 1: those would be really nice choices because they are a
- 45:46Speaker 1: little bit taller. Yeah, you can do some sandy tracks
- 45:49Speaker 1: and things like that. Or I had a RAV for
- 45:51Speaker 1: when we lived in Ridgeway and really nice little car.
- 45:55Speaker 1: I'm going hiking here, like oh you oh you drove
- 45:58Speaker 1: up that.
- 46:00Speaker 2: Cool You're at Prattleville exactly, So you don't need a
- 46:03Speaker 2: cheap to well that's when before it opens in.
- 46:05Speaker 1: Yeah, you can run as far as you want on
- 46:07Speaker 1: black Bear. Oh but you see Subaru's uh Cinnamon and
- 46:10Speaker 1: all those past totally.
- 46:12Speaker 2: Do Yeah, yeah, I mean, I mean maybe that's the thing.
- 46:15Speaker 1: Subaru CRB.
- 46:17Speaker 2: I think I'm going to throw an alternative in here
- 46:20Speaker 2: for for an affordable car is a Model three Oh
- 46:25Speaker 2: purchase prices a little bit more no fuel, very very
- 46:28Speaker 2: very little maintenance. You can sleep inside of them. You
- 46:32Speaker 2: can plug them in at a campground, so you can
- 46:34Speaker 2: go to a campground, okay, and you can get Like
- 46:36Speaker 2: Bruce Dorn was telling me about this guy that he
- 46:38Speaker 2: ran into some of the Navo reservation had a I'm
- 46:42Speaker 2: going to say it was a Model I think it
- 46:43Speaker 2: was a.
- 46:43Speaker 1: Model three, okay, because and they're old drive.
- 46:46Speaker 2: Yeah, So he'd go and he'd get his fifteen or
- 46:49Speaker 2: thirty amp service campsite yep, that you know has your
- 46:53Speaker 2: showers and your toilets and your water and all your stuff.
- 46:56Speaker 1: So less than if you'll take a gas. Yeah, you've
- 46:59Speaker 1: now got a campsite and you've caps the vehicle. You're
- 47:01Speaker 1: not when you're traveling. You're not driving more than three
- 47:05Speaker 1: to three hundred and fifty miles a day, right, I mean,
- 47:07Speaker 1: if you're doing that long term, you're you're blown by everything.
- 47:11Speaker 1: And those things also have the ability to like put
- 47:13Speaker 1: serious range in in short amounts. So you have a
- 47:16Speaker 1: air conditioned and heated camp site because you can sleep
- 47:20Speaker 1: in the back, and they have this like apparently they
- 47:22Speaker 1: have this like camping mode. You can just like leave
- 47:23Speaker 1: the oh, yeah, or like the dog mode where it
- 47:26Speaker 1: just keeps temperature controlled. So that's brilliant because you're plugged in,
- 47:30Speaker 1: you're not using any fuel, and you're charging at the
- 47:33Speaker 1: same time. It's so smart. But that's what it's going
- 47:35Speaker 1: to be. Think about it. I mean, we've got we've
- 47:37Speaker 1: got the Hummer EV, We've got Mercedes just made the
- 47:41Speaker 1: statement today that within the decade they're going to be
- 47:45Speaker 1: all electric in their sedan, all their cars electric.
- 47:47Speaker 2: Qus just launched Bass and was out uh and Zurich.
- 47:52Speaker 2: My buddy bast wat So he was out in Zurich
- 47:54Speaker 2: driving that. He's like, it's another level. Yeah, it's a
- 47:57Speaker 2: different motoring experience. Yeah, I'm so excited for electric cars
- 48:01Speaker 2: and they're coming. So yeah, I'm not saying that I'm
- 48:03Speaker 2: not going to still own big, dirty, massive, beautiful V eights.
- 48:08Speaker 1: Yeah, or W twelves or whatever they may be. But
- 48:11Speaker 1: I think that for a lot of us, Arrivian or
- 48:15Speaker 1: a Hummer EV, something that has and they're going to
- 48:18Speaker 1: have five hundred miles rains are going to get there
- 48:20Speaker 1: and there's no overall was already there. Yeah.
- 48:23Speaker 2: The world's fastest production car zero to sixty right now
- 48:27Speaker 2: is they've plaid a model s Plaid, Like it's a
- 48:30Speaker 2: space balls joke.
- 48:32Speaker 1: We're going so fast we've gone plaid.
- 48:33Speaker 2: Yeah, one point nine seconds zero to sixty. It's like
- 48:38Speaker 2: one hundred and twenty thousand dollars, which is a lot
- 48:40Speaker 2: of money. But the car that most closely matches its performance,
- 48:45Speaker 2: or there's two, there's the Bugatti Sharon or a nine
- 48:48Speaker 2: to eleven turbos.
- 48:50Speaker 1: Yeah, and how much do those cost? Anywhere from three
- 48:52Speaker 1: to Yeah.
- 48:53Speaker 2: Like turbos, I think starting price is one hundred and
- 48:56Speaker 2: ninety one.
- 48:57Speaker 1: Thousand, Okay, so that's closer than I thought it would be.
- 49:00Speaker 2: The Charan like where you invited to buy one, Like
- 49:03Speaker 2: it doesn't matter.
- 49:04Speaker 1: They don't have the price listed, but that car has that.
- 49:07Speaker 2: The model as Plaid has a five hundred and twenty
- 49:11Speaker 2: mile range. Yeah, so soon we're going to be at
- 49:13Speaker 2: the point where, like all electric cars have to beat
- 49:16Speaker 2: is what humans can drive in a day.
- 49:18Speaker 1: Yeah, so you know there's always that one. Dude.
- 49:21Speaker 2: It's like, well when I go to like my dad
- 49:23Speaker 2: when we were kids, and it's like I'm not even
- 49:26Speaker 2: getting out to go to the bathroom. From Illinois to Florida,
- 49:29Speaker 2: like you might have to stop. Yeah, but you have
- 49:32Speaker 2: to stop for gas. Yeah, sketchy gas stations. Sure, you
- 49:35Speaker 2: have to stop and eat, you know.
- 49:37Speaker 1: So you stop, you plug in your car, you eat
- 49:39Speaker 1: a nice lunch, and then you get back in it
- 49:41Speaker 1: and off you go. Yeah, that's going to happen. So
- 49:43Speaker 1: and then the fact that you could be in camping
- 49:45Speaker 1: mode with the AC running, the heater running, totally comfortable
- 49:49Speaker 1: inside it. That's going to be awesome.
- 49:50Speaker 2: Supposedly the cyber truck's going to have that little that
- 49:53Speaker 2: the option for the camper on the back if we
- 49:56Speaker 2: ever see that. But you know, the Rivian is very
- 50:00Speaker 2: very appealing to me.
- 50:01Speaker 1: And and the Bezos space thing that just happened a
- 50:06Speaker 1: few days ago. He drove out to the to the
- 50:08Speaker 1: launch site in a ribbean. Yeah, that's kind of cool.
- 50:11Speaker 2: Yeah, everybody is sitting on Jeff Bezos right now. Yeah,
- 50:15Speaker 2: it's a new it's a new frontier, and you're going
- 50:18Speaker 2: to be the world's first trillionaire. Or maybe he already is.
- 50:21Speaker 2: Isn't he already?
- 50:21Speaker 1: No? I don't think so.
- 50:22Speaker 2: Just you just have different interests, Like Jeff Bezos buying
- 50:25Speaker 2: a rocket is like an average American buying like Starbucks.
- 50:29Speaker 1: Yeah, he has spent a billion dollars a year for
- 50:32Speaker 1: the last decade to be able to go on a
- 50:34Speaker 1: flight into space.
- 50:36Speaker 2: Yeah, but we have to do that as humanity, no question.
- 50:39Speaker 2: I get into this conversation with electric cars. It's like
- 50:41Speaker 2: electrics and nice short term solution. But eventually we will
- 50:44Speaker 2: mine all of the lithium. Yeah, and it's going to
- 50:47Speaker 2: have to be hydrogen or something that can be a
- 50:50Speaker 2: legit renewable resource. But on that same regard, we will
- 50:54Speaker 2: always eventually run out of this planet. So we don't
- 50:57Speaker 2: have people that are pushing the boundaries literally to get
- 51:00Speaker 2: us elsewhere.
- 51:01Speaker 1: As a species, we don't survive. Yeah, it doesn't affect
- 51:04Speaker 1: our life time.
- 51:05Speaker 2: But the house sparrow will run Earth. Yeah, and we'll
- 51:08Speaker 2: run you know, and then in like twelve million years
- 51:10Speaker 2: we'll have this alien you know, house sparrow invasion. That
- 51:15Speaker 2: was crazy. It's a very successful species. People think because
- 51:19Speaker 2: it's ordinary that it's not successful.
- 51:20Speaker 1: Yeah, there you go.
- 51:21Speaker 2: It has been successful. Knowledge by Matt today we should
- 51:25Speaker 2: probably end this. It was brilliant cool.
- 51:27Speaker 1: So just think about that SUPERU no modifications, drive it
- 51:30Speaker 1: around the world. If you do that, Matt and I
- 51:33Speaker 1: will both find some way to make it very much
- 51:35Speaker 1: worth your while to come on the podcast and talk
- 51:37Speaker 1: about it. So think about that supercross track. Probably average
- 51:40Speaker 1: selling price twenty five thousand dollars, A loaded one is
- 51:43Speaker 1: twenty eight thousand dollars. You can drive it out of
- 51:46Speaker 1: the box. You don't have to buy tires, you don't
- 51:48Speaker 1: have to buy anything. I mean, maybe buy some I
- 51:51Speaker 1: think Falcons got those wild Peak crusts slightly.
- 51:54Speaker 2: I probably do that a couple of little skid plates,
- 51:57Speaker 2: a couple of skid plates, drive it to South America,
- 52:00Speaker 2: drive it back, YEP, and then you're going to sell
- 52:02Speaker 2: your you know, your twenty eight thousand dollars super you
- 52:04Speaker 2: bought new with fifty thousand miles, you're going to sell
- 52:07Speaker 2: it for like twenty seven right now. Or it's a
- 52:10Speaker 2: used car, so probably like eight hundred thousand dollars. Yeah,
- 52:13Speaker 2: and use all the rest of the money to do
- 52:15Speaker 2: your trip.
- 52:15Speaker 1: Ye you know exactly.
- 52:17Speaker 2: Think of what a Tacoma could COSTEP even to use
- 52:20Speaker 2: to Cooma.
- 52:20Speaker 1: It's just worth considering. And that's why we wanted to
- 52:22Speaker 1: talk about this on this podcast, is we don't always
- 52:25Speaker 1: have to have the most extreme solution to an average problem,
- 52:30Speaker 1: which if the If the problem is I want to
- 52:32Speaker 1: drive from here to South America and I don't really
- 52:35Speaker 1: need to do a lot of off roading or I
- 52:37Speaker 1: don't really care to, then start off with something that's
- 52:39Speaker 1: really comfortable to drive on the road, and it's going
- 52:41Speaker 1: to cost you a lot less money and you're going
- 52:43Speaker 1: to kind of have a different experience than looking super
- 52:46Speaker 1: expedition y, which I think is a good thing. Yeah,
- 52:48Speaker 1: and thank you all for listening. And yeah, send us
- 52:51Speaker 1: some feedback or ideas if you've got your ultimate car
- 52:54Speaker 1: or you've been driving your ultimate car down to USHWAYA
- 52:57Speaker 1: and you want to send us some pictures in a
- 52:59Speaker 1: little update. We'll talk about it on a future episode.
