- 0:29Welcome back to the Revolution of Purpose podcast.
- 0:32I'm Jon Street, mindset coach, speaker,
- 0:35author of the book, Revolution of Purpose,
- 0:36and someone who is passionate
- 0:39about helping people identify your purpose,
- 0:42ignite your transformation, and implement your vision.
- 0:46Today, I wanna talk to you about a teaching
- 0:48that has shaped the personal development world for decades.
- 0:52It's known as Be, Do, Have.
- 0:56Many of you have heard it before.
- 0:58If you've been following me teaching for a long time,
- 1:01I have been teaching this.
- 1:03It is an idea that is simple.
- 1:04Most people believe that when they have something,
- 1:08they'll do the necessary things
- 1:09to become that person that they want to be.
- 1:12So in other words, when I have more money,
- 1:14I'll start investing,
- 1:16or when I have more confidence, I'll take that chance,
- 1:19or when I have more time, I'll start pursuing my purpose.
- 1:23But the Be, Do, Have model challenges this way of thinking.
- 1:27It's sort of like society says,
- 1:29when I have the money, I'll invest,
- 1:32and then I'll be a wealthy person.
- 1:33And Be, Do, Have instead says,
- 1:35no, first we must become that person,
- 1:38and then do the actions, and then we'll have the results.
- 1:42This is a really powerful teaching.
- 1:44It was made popular by Bob Proctor, Jim Rohn,
- 1:47a lot of others, and it is something that I really value.
- 1:51And over the last few days,
- 1:52I've actually been asking myself the question,
- 1:56what if we've misunderstood the Be, Do, Have teaching?
- 2:01What if in personal development,
- 2:03we're missing something that is an important key
- 2:06to Be, Do, Have actually working in people's lives?
- 2:10What if many people are getting stuck
- 2:13because they think being is something passive?
- 2:17What if the Be of Be, Do, Have is not passive at all,
- 2:20but it's actually an action?
- 2:23Because here is what I've learned.
- 2:26You don't think your way into a new life.
- 2:29Yes, thinking is important.
- 2:31And yes, if you can see it in your mind,
- 2:33you can hold it in your hand, all of that is true,
- 2:36but you can't just think.
- 2:39You have to act your way into your new life.
- 2:43Every action is a vote for the person that you're becoming.
- 2:47And that's what we're gonna talk about here today.
- 2:51The missing piece of the important teaching,
- 2:55Be, Do, Have.
- 2:57It's not that in the personal development circles,
- 2:59we have Be, Do, Have wrong.
- 3:03We just have the word be wrong.
- 3:07I think that so many of us have just misunderstood it.
- 3:10When people hear be, they often think,
- 3:13okay, I have to think differently,
- 3:17or I have to visualize myself differently.
- 3:20Maybe I have to write different affirmations.
- 3:24Maybe I have to imagine myself differently.
- 3:26And while all of those things have value,
- 3:30they're just incomplete
- 3:31because being isn't merely something that you think.
- 3:36Being is something that you know.
- 3:39Being is something that you embody.
- 3:41Being is something that you practice.
- 3:43Being is something that you demonstrate through action.
- 3:47Think about a chef, for instance.
- 3:49Let's say that you have a person who wants to become a chef.
- 3:53They go to cooking school.
- 3:54They start cooking.
- 3:55They start, they open a restaurant.
- 3:57They're serving food.
- 3:58They're selling food.
- 4:00They know they're a chef.
- 4:02They don't have to keep telling themselves
- 4:04every day they've become a chef.
- 4:06They don't buy a big chef's hat and put it on
- 4:08and look in the mirror and say, you are a chef.
- 4:11I believe you're a chef.
- 4:13No, they take the actions to change their identity.
- 4:18Being is something that you demonstrate
- 4:21through your actions.
- 4:23A confident person doesn't simply think confident thoughts.
- 4:28A confident person takes confident actions.
- 4:31Likewise, a healthy person doesn't just simply
- 4:34imagine being healthy.
- 4:36You know, what would it be like if I were healthy one day?
- 4:38I guess that makes me a healthy person.
- 4:41No, a healthy person starts to make healthy choices
- 4:44and take healthy actions.
- 4:46A leader doesn't become a leader
- 4:48just because they thought about starting a business
- 4:51or maybe they order business cards that say CEO.
- 4:55They become a leader because they lead.
- 4:58Being is not a noun.
- 5:02Be, do, have.
- 5:04Being is a verb.
- 5:06It is an active action verb, as a matter of fact.
- 5:12It requires movement.
- 5:14And so I think this is where so many people get stuck.
- 5:17And maybe they say manifestation doesn't work for me.
- 5:21Be, do, have doesn't work for me.
- 5:23And that's because you've got to move past the affirmations.
- 5:28You've got to move past the looking in the mirror
- 5:30and telling yourself who you are.
- 5:32You have to go to where being is a knowing of who you are.
- 5:36Stop trying to convince yourself that you're someone
- 5:40without doing the things that that person would do.
- 5:42You really have to put the action behind it
- 5:46to become that person.
- 5:49Every action is a vote for who you desire to be.
- 5:53One of the most powerful realizations
- 5:56that I've ever had in this
- 5:58is that when we take an action toward our identity,
- 6:02we are voting for ourselves.
- 6:04Every workout we do is a vote.
- 6:07Every healthy meal we do is a vote.
- 6:10Every difficult conversation we have is a vote.
- 6:13Every sales call we have is a vote.
- 6:16Every boundary we set amongst toxic people
- 6:19to live the best life we can live is a vote.
- 6:22Every time that you choose courage over comfort,
- 6:27you are casting a vote.
- 6:28Not a vote for who you were,
- 6:30but a vote for who you're becoming.
- 6:33You are casting a vote for the be of be, do, have.
- 6:37Many people think identity comes first
- 6:39and then action comes later,
- 6:41but I've really found that identity and action
- 6:44are constantly shaping each other.
- 6:47Instead of looking at be, do, have as a linear,
- 6:51I believe we should start looking at be, do, have
- 6:54as a circular, because we have to do the action to be,
- 6:59and then that action causes us to do the things
- 7:02that that person would do,
- 7:03and then we have the things that person would have,
- 7:06which causes us to do more action,
- 7:08which makes us be more and more of that person,
- 7:10which means we take more and more of those actions,
- 7:12which means we have more and more of the results.
- 7:14Stop thinking, I'm gonna think about who I should be,
- 7:18and then I'll do those actions,
- 7:20and then I'll have the results.
- 7:21Instead, jump into the loop.
- 7:24Jump into that circular action of being that person
- 7:28and doing more of the things that person does
- 7:30and having more of the results,
- 7:32so you do more of the things and you be more of the things.
- 7:35Just look at be as an action, do as an action,
- 7:39and even have is an action,
- 7:43because you realize to have the things
- 7:44that our desired person has, we have to accept those things.
- 7:49We have to know that we're worthy of having those things.
- 7:52We have to do the actions to get them,
- 7:54and we have to accept them.
- 7:55Identity is an action,
- 7:58and it, with doing, is constantly shaping yourself.
- 8:03Your action confirms your identity,
- 8:05and the more evidence that you create,
- 8:07the more that you begin to believe in yourself.
- 8:09You believe, and the more you believe, the more you act,
- 8:13and the more act you, the more you have,
- 8:14and you just keep adding to this cycle,
- 8:17and eventually, that cycle
- 8:19becomes a full-life transformation.
- 8:22You don't become a different person
- 8:24and then start taking different actions.
- 8:26You start taking different actions
- 8:28until they build a different person.
- 8:31I certainly lived this in my own life.
- 8:34At one point in my life, I weighed well over 350 pounds.
- 8:38I was struggling with so many health issues,
- 8:41and I couldn't even take long walks.
- 8:43I was getting sicker and sicker and so unhealthy,
- 8:47and let me just be careful here
- 8:49because I know a lot of times,
- 8:50there are people who talk about a health transformation,
- 8:53and they say it in a way that is very judgmental,
- 8:56and so just because I'm at a different place
- 8:59on this particular journey
- 9:00does not mean that I'm judging anyone for not being there.
- 9:02This is not about body size.
- 9:04This is not about fat phobia.
- 9:07This is not about appearance,
- 9:09but this is about my personal transformation
- 9:11because no matter what it is,
- 9:12everyone has a mountain that they're climbing,
- 9:15and what happened to be one of mine was my weight.
- 9:19It was rooted in food addiction and sugar addiction,
- 9:23and here's what I learned through my process
- 9:26of losing about 120 pounds.
- 9:28I didn't wake up one morning
- 9:30and magically become a healthy person.
- 9:32For 45 years, I had been very unhealthy,
- 9:35and so it didn't just change overnight.
- 9:38I didn't suddenly believe that's who I was,
- 9:41so I did the things.
- 9:42It wasn't like be, do, have, and then it just worked.
- 9:44I didn't stand in front of a mirror
- 9:46and convince myself that I was healthy,
- 9:47and then I started to do the right things.
- 9:49What happened for me was so much simpler.
- 9:53I just started taking small, healthy actions.
- 9:56I started making some better choices.
- 9:59I went walking when I didn't feel like going walking.
- 10:02I went and exercised at the gym
- 10:04when I didn't feel like exercising at the gym.
- 10:06I remember one night, it was eight o'clock,
- 10:08and it was my day to go to the gym,
- 10:11and I didn't feel like going.
- 10:12It was raining outside.
- 10:13I'm like, who goes to the gym at eight o'clock?
- 10:15I'm not that guy, and then I just stopped myself,
- 10:18and I was like, I am that guy.
- 10:21All I have to do to be that guy
- 10:23is actually go to the gym at eight o'clock.
- 10:25It was the action that made me believe that I was that guy.
- 10:30I made different decisions around my food.
- 10:33I made different decisions around my activities
- 10:37and my exercises and the weights that I was doing.
- 10:42Everything was just working in a cycle
- 10:45to help convince me of who I was becoming.
- 10:47Over time, those actions created evidence,
- 10:50and that evidence created belief,
- 10:52and that belief strengthened my identity.
- 10:54It gave me hope that the old me did not have to dictate
- 10:59who the current me was,
- 11:01and eventually, I wasn't trying to become a healthier person.
- 11:06I was a healthier person, not because I said I was,
- 11:11not because I just looked in the mirror
- 11:13and kept saying, John, you're a healthier person,
- 11:15but because I was taking those actions.
- 11:17I was living like a healthier person lives.
- 11:21The doing created the being,
- 11:25and then that being produced the results.
- 11:27That is true for health.
- 11:29That is true for business.
- 11:32That is true for relationships.
- 11:33That is true for your purpose.

- 12:43And now, let's get back to this podcast.
- 12:46The doing creates the identity
- 12:49that brings about the results.
- 12:51You know, there's this saying out there,
- 12:52it's very, very famous, fake it until you make it.
- 12:56I have never loved that phrase.
- 12:59I just always felt like it sounded
- 13:00like someone's pretending, you know?
- 13:02It just implies that someone's putting on a mask,
- 13:05that they're not real.
- 13:07It implies acting like something that you're not.
- 13:10And I don't like that.
- 13:11I believe 100% that our power is in our authenticity.
- 13:15And so we need to awaken to who we truly are to make it.
- 13:19So I prefer a different phrase, be it and you will see it.
- 13:25To me, be it and you will see it does not mean pretending.
- 13:29It means becoming, it means awakening to who you are.
- 13:31It means aligning with that version of yourself
- 13:35that we are called to be that is already within us.
- 13:38If you want to become a writer, then write.
- 13:42If you want to become a speaker, then speak.
- 13:45If you want to become healthy, then make healthy choices,
- 13:48do healthy things.
- 13:49If you want to become a leader, then lead.
- 13:52Don't wait until you feel like that person.
- 13:57Act like that person, not from ego
- 14:01and not from performance, but from alignment.
- 14:03You don't become the person
- 14:05and then start acting like the person.
- 14:07You act in alignment with your wish fulfilled,
- 14:11as Neville Goddard would say,
- 14:12with that future version of yourself
- 14:15until eventually you realize,
- 14:19I am that person in the present.
- 14:22It's not the future anymore, it's here.
- 14:25I love the scripture that talks about
- 14:27how we can point to the mountain and say,
- 14:31mountain be moved and it'll be moved
- 14:33and cast into the depths of the seas.
- 14:35And I think it's really awesome
- 14:36because I think that whether you come
- 14:39from a Christian religion or any other type of religion,
- 14:43as long as you believe that there is a higher power
- 14:45that you can tap into, that you can move mountains.
- 14:48But here's the thing, sometimes moving that mountain
- 14:51doesn't mean the mountain gets out of your way.
- 14:53Sometimes we move the mountain by taking a step
- 14:57and then another step and then another step.
- 14:59And every step we take over that mountain,
- 15:02the mountain's starting to go further
- 15:03and further behind us.
- 15:05Faith is movement.
- 15:07And this is really where purpose
- 15:08and spirituality come together.
- 15:11Many people think faith is belief,
- 15:14but I believe faith is movement
- 15:15because faith is taking the step
- 15:18when you can't see the entire staircase.
- 15:21Faith is climbing the mountain
- 15:22when it hasn't moved out of your way
- 15:24and learning that as you climb
- 15:26and God, the universe is giving you the way over the mountain
- 15:29that the mountain is slowly going behind you.
- 15:32Faith is stepping out of the boat
- 15:34when you don't see a way to not drown.
- 15:36Faith is trusting that your actions matter
- 15:38even when the results aren't visible yet.
- 15:41The seed grows underground
- 15:43long before it breaks through the soil.
- 15:45And that growth is happening even when you can't see it.
- 15:48But most people, they wait for certainty.
- 15:51It's a lot easier to just stop and say the affirmations
- 15:54than to actually take the action.
- 15:57But certainty comes after you take action, not before.
- 16:02You don't get step two until you take step one.
- 16:06The universe rarely reveals the entire journey.
- 16:09God rarely hands us the complete blueprint
- 16:12and says, okay, this is where you wanna go.
- 16:14This is where you're gonna have to do
- 16:15step by step by step.
- 16:18Now, usually faith is required.
- 16:20Surrender is required.
- 16:21Trust is required.
- 16:24And we're just shown one step
- 16:26and then maybe the next step
- 16:27and then maybe the next step.
- 16:29The people who transform their lives
- 16:32aren't the people who know the most.
- 16:35They're the people who move.
- 16:36So after thinking about this for several days,
- 16:39here's where I landed.
- 16:41I still believe in Be, Do, Have.
- 16:43I believe in it more than ever, as a matter of fact.
- 16:47But I do think we need to understand it differently.
- 16:50I do think that this very teaching
- 16:52that has set some people free
- 16:53has also kept some people stuck.
- 16:56Be, act from the identity of the person you are becoming.
- 17:02Act from the identity of the person you are becoming.
- 17:07Do, take consistent actions
- 17:10that align with that identity.
- 17:13Have, receive the results that naturally follow.
- 17:17Being is not passive.
- 17:19Doing is not optional.
- 17:21Having requires acceptance and trust.
- 17:25All three, Be, Do, Have, are actions.
- 17:28And when all three are active,
- 17:30transformation becomes inevitable.
- 17:34That is my hope to you today as you see this.
- 17:37I want you to know that you cannot lose
- 17:41when you actively be that person,
- 17:44when you actively do the things that person would do,
- 17:46and you actively accept and have
- 17:49the things that person would have.
- 17:51Transformation is inevitable.
- 17:53You just have to flow in it.
- 17:55You're awakening to what is already within you.
- 17:57As we wrap up, I wanna leave you with three questions.
- 18:00I want you to ask yourself, who do I want to become?
- 18:04I wanna ask yourself,
- 18:06what action would that version of me take today?
- 18:10And then ask, what am I waiting for before I take it?
- 18:13And then let me challenge you.
- 18:15Stop waiting to become that person.
- 18:18Say the affirmations.
- 18:20Say them in a mirror, write it down, journal it.
- 18:23Those are amazing things.
- 18:25But then once you do, put that action with it.
- 18:28Start casting votes for that person you desire to be.
- 18:34One action, one decision, one choice at a time,
- 18:39because every single action is a vote
- 18:42for that person you're becoming.
- 18:44Thank you so much for joining me
- 18:46on another episode of Revolution of Purpose podcast.

- 18:59And remember, you don't think your way into a new life.
- 19:03You act your way into a new identity.
- 19:06Every action is a vote for that new identity
- 19:11that you are becoming.
- 19:13So be it, and you will see it.
- 19:16Until next time, identify your purpose,
- 19:18ignite your transformation, and implement your vision.
- 19:22God bless.
