- 0:23Now let's get into today's topic.
- 0:27OK, this is throws coach Nells and today I wanted to just go
- 0:31over the techniques I use for reviewing videos.
- 0:36And typically I'll get the videos from coaches or athletes,
- 0:41they'll direct message me on X or Twitter and then I'll
- 0:47sometimes I'll just look at the videos directly from the DM
- 0:51because I I get the best quality that way.
- 0:53I'm just not missing any frames. And usually I like to get a
- 0:57video pretty much straight on, maybe at the waist level from
- 1:01the back of the circle with what I call 12:00 and looking towards
- 1:046:00. So the back of circles at 12,
- 1:07restarting and then the front of the circle is going to be 6:00,
- 1:12which is the throwing direction. So we're talking about either
- 1:15glide shot or discus or rotational shot put.
- 1:20So if you get a video from the back, we can see the starting
- 1:23point, some some really key positions.
- 1:25And then also if you put the camera over on the 9:00 on the
- 1:30looking from 12:00 to 6:00. If you put the camera over on
- 1:34the 9:00 position right down the center of the circle, the center
- 1:39line on the side, splitting the circle in half, looking towards
- 1:453:00 again about waist high. With both of those, you can
- 1:50usually see everything you need to see to analyze the video.
- 1:54So a lot of times I'll have to get a result back to the thrower
- 1:59or a coach right away because maybe they're in practice right
- 2:01now. So I'll try to take and look at
- 2:05the video they sent me and just kind of drag the the scroll bar
- 2:09on the bottom and then let the video kind of go frame by frame.
- 2:13And I'll I'll click on maybe and stop the video at at certain
- 2:19points. I like to look at the beginning
- 2:21when the right foot just comes off the ground for the
- 2:23rotational shot or discus, and then when they the sweep leg,
- 2:29maybe when both feet are pointing towards 6:00 and then
- 2:34again when the right foot lands and where the body positions are
- 2:39and then continuing on when the left toes touchdown and then as
- 2:43you go into the release. So having both of those views,
- 2:46even looking at them side by side is really great.
- 2:49If I have to make a video, I'll take the video that they sent me
- 2:53and a lot of times I'll just open up my two screens at home
- 2:57and on the right side I'll use the software OBS and I'll just
- 3:01try to capture the entire video. I learned I have to change the
- 3:07the rate on it. They call it let's see output,
- 3:12they call it the video bit rate. I just, I set mine to 4500 KPPS
- 3:18and with that, I've noticed I don't lose any frames.
- 3:21So I'll record and I'll copy the video from the direct message on
- 3:27the the OBS. And from the OBS, I'll open up
- 3:30my another piece of software called Kenovia that's free
- 3:34download and the Kenovia software, I'll be able to scroll
- 3:40through the video forwards and backwards.
- 3:42And also it allows me to put arrows and lines on there too.
- 3:47And then I can change the thickness of the lines or the
- 3:49color of the lines to help out. And sometimes if I want to just
- 3:54do a still shot, I'll just, I'll use the keyboard and I'll do a
- 4:00snapshot of the screen and I'll move it over to a PowerPoint
- 4:06presentation. And the PowerPoint I will have
- 4:09open and I just kind of look at it.
- 4:11And from there I can size it how I want.
- 4:16And then I can also just post the picture really quickly and
- 4:19respond back or I can use those photos.
- 4:23If I want to open up another program, which is a Windows
- 4:27Movie Maker, I'll use that too. And if I have several videos,
- 4:31that's I'll end up doing that. Sometimes the throwers will send
- 4:33me more than one video. So I'll open up the Windows
- 4:37Movie Maker and sometimes I'll take some snapshots photos and
- 4:41I'll embed them in between some of the videos to kind of show
- 4:45them key positions. So the Movie Maker is pretty
- 4:50good. So those are all the software's
- 4:53I use and those are all the techniques are pretty much used.
- 4:56But for me, I'm looking at as to what I'm looking at when I'm
- 5:02reviewing a video, I'm looking at the combinations and and the
- 5:07connections between body parts. Say, for instance, coming out of
- 5:10the back of the circle, I'm watching how the discus, say, or
- 5:14the rotational shot of the left arm and the right leg are moving
- 5:17together in coordination. So the left arm's not just being
- 5:20thrown out there with it and leaving the right leg behind and
- 5:23then some other as the right leg comes down and you wanted to
- 5:28hook back in back toward the 9:00 to 12:00.
- 5:32You want to see all that left arm is also working together
- 5:35like an accordion. So I'm looking to those
- 5:37connections. I'm also trying to see when the
- 5:39right foot lands. Are they landing with a high
- 5:42heel or is it flat? Are they leaning forward?
- 5:45Are they vertical or they're leaning back?
- 5:47Do they have an arch in their back?
- 5:49So you pretty much you have to look at everything.
- 5:53I even look at when I can see it.
- 5:55I'll look at how they're gripping the discus.
- 5:57I want to see that they're grabbing it with just the the
- 5:59pads on their fingers and that on the into the first joint and
- 6:05going through. I look at the release.
- 6:07I like to see at the release. Nice.
- 6:09If they show it a nice even flight with not a lot of wobble,
- 6:14maybe the right side down a little bit so that as it flies
- 6:19and it'll eventually turn over to the left, you want to delay
- 6:22that as long as possible. So you can get a lot of
- 6:25information out of the videos that my problem is when I was
- 6:27coaching, say high school or the college, I couldn't see a lot of
- 6:31these things. I'd have to videotape it and
- 6:34then stop and review it in between because it happened so
- 6:37fast. You're anywhere from one to two
- 6:40seconds going across the ring. So I don't know, some coaches
- 6:44are able to do it. I, I was never able to, but I
- 6:47was always able to have it videotaped and try to break it
- 6:51down. So you get immediate feedback.
- 6:54Sometimes that's tough when you have more than one thrower and
- 6:56you're, you know, the next one's up again and you haven't
- 6:58reviewed the first video. So another thing I look for is
- 7:02consistency. You want to make sure watch the
- 7:06same person. I did this just the other day.
- 7:08I was at the end of the track watching a kid throwing the shot
- 7:11put with his grandfather and I told him I used to coach here.
- 7:14He said, oh, give him some tips. I said, well, I'm watching him
- 7:17right now to make sure he's consistent.
- 7:19Everything he does is the same because you really can't change
- 7:23anything if they're doing different things every time.
- 7:26So that's just one experience of when you're actually work,
- 7:30working with the person, you, you want him to be consistent
- 7:33every time. And then you'll develop those
- 7:35those habits with them as you know, you review their videos or
- 7:38review them and coach them and get them to be more consistent
- 7:42and hit those positions. Another thing, I always like to
- 7:45start from the back of the circle to the front because
- 7:47anything you change at the back may change things later on at
- 7:51the front. So it's best to maybe just work
- 7:53on things from the back of the circle, the entry, and if
- 7:58there's other problems after that, they may sometimes fix
- 8:01themselves. So you start the back of the
- 8:03circle, make sure everything's right on the entry and the
- 8:06shifting over to the left for the discus or the rotational
- 8:09shot, making sure they're balanced.
- 8:12So OK, well, I guess that's all I had.
- 8:16Mike asked me to do a podcast here for him.
- 8:20So I I'm e-mail obligation for you, Mike.
- 8:24Anyway, I'm throws coach Nels. If you just Google that, you'll
