Speaker 1: Book twenty three. Euryclea now went upstairs, laughing to tell
• 0:07
Speaker 1: her mistress that her dear husband had come home. Her
• 0:12
Speaker 1: aged knees became young again, and her feet were nimble
• 0:16
Speaker 1: for joy as she went up to her mistress and
• 0:19
Speaker 1: bent over her head to speak with her. Wake up, Penelope,
• 0:24
Speaker 1: my dear child, she exclaimed, and see with your own
• 0:27
Speaker 1: eyes something that you have been wanting this long time. Past.
• 0:33
Speaker 1: Ulysses has at last indeed come home again, and has
• 0:39
Speaker 1: killed the suitors who were giving so much trouble in
• 0:43
Speaker 1: his house, eating up his estate, and ill treating his son.
• 0:48
Speaker 1: My good nurse answered, Penelope, you must be mad. The
• 0:53
Speaker 1: gods sometimes send some very sensible people out of their
• 0:57
Speaker 1: minds and make foolish people be come sensible. This is
• 1:02
Speaker 1: what they must have been doing with you, for you
• 1:05
Speaker 1: always used to be a reasonable person. Why should you
• 1:09
Speaker 1: thus mock me when I have trouble enough already, talking
• 1:13
Speaker 1: such nonsense, and waking me up out of a sweet
• 1:17
Speaker 1: sleep that had taken possession of my eyes and closed them.
• 1:22
Speaker 1: I have never slept so soundly from the day my
• 1:25
Speaker 1: poor husband went to that city with the ill omened name,
• 1:30
Speaker 1: go back again into the woman's room. If it had
• 1:33
Speaker 1: been any one else who had woke me to bring
• 1:36
Speaker 1: such absurd news, I should have sent her away with
• 1:40
Speaker 1: a severe scolding. As it is your age shall protect you,
• 1:46
Speaker 1: my dear child, answered Eurycleia, I am not mocking you.
• 1:51
Speaker 1: It is quite true as I tell you, that Ulysses
• 1:55
Speaker 1: is come home again. He was the stranger whom they
• 1:59
Speaker 1: all kept entreating so badly in the cloister Telemachus knew
• 2:04
Speaker 1: all the time that he has come back, but kept
• 2:07
Speaker 1: his father's secret that he might have his revenge on
• 2:11
Speaker 1: all these wicked people. Then Penelope sprang up from her couch,
• 2:18
Speaker 1: threw her arms round Euryclea, and wept for joy. But
• 2:23
Speaker 1: my dear nurse said, she explain this to me. If
• 2:27
Speaker 1: he has really come home as you say, how did
• 2:30
Speaker 1: he manage to overcome the wicked suitors single handed, seeing
• 2:35
Speaker 1: what a number of them there always were. I was
• 2:39
Speaker 1: not here, answered Euryclea, and do not know. I only
• 2:44
Speaker 1: heard them groaning while they were being killed. We sat
• 2:48
Speaker 1: huddled and crouching in a corner of the women's room
• 2:51
Speaker 1: with the doors closed, till your son came to fetch
• 2:55
Speaker 1: me because his father sent him. Then I found Ulysses
• 3:00
Speaker 1: standing over the corpses that were lying on the ground
• 3:03
Speaker 1: all round him, one on top of the other. You
• 3:07
Speaker 1: would have enjoyed it if you could have seen him
• 3:10
Speaker 1: standing there, all be spattered with blood and filth, and
• 3:14
Speaker 1: looking just like a lion. But the corpses are now
• 3:19
Speaker 1: all piled up in the gatehouse, that is in the
• 3:21
Speaker 1: outer court, and Ulysses has lit a great fire to
• 3:26
Speaker 1: purify the house with sulfur. He has sent me to
• 3:30
Speaker 1: call you, so come with me, that you may both
• 3:34
Speaker 1: be happy together after all, For now, at last the
• 3:39
Speaker 1: desire of your heart has been fulfilled. Your husband is
• 3:44
Speaker 1: come home to find both wife and son alive and well,
• 3:49
Speaker 1: and to take his revenge in his own house on
• 3:53
Speaker 1: the suitors who behaved so badly to him. My dear nurse,
• 3:58
Speaker 1: said Penelope, do not exult too confidently over all this.
• 4:03
Speaker 1: You know how delighted every one would be to see
• 4:07
Speaker 1: Ulysses come home, more particularly myself and the son who
• 4:12
Speaker 1: has been born to both of us. But what you
• 4:16
Speaker 1: tell me cannot be really true. It is some God
• 4:19
Speaker 1: who is angry with the suitors for their great wickedness,
• 4:23
Speaker 1: and has made an end of them, for they respected
• 4:26
Speaker 1: no man in the world, neither rich nor poor, who
• 4:30
Speaker 1: came near them, who came near them, and they have
• 4:35
Speaker 1: come to a bad end in consequence of their iniquity.
• 4:39
Speaker 1: Ulysses is dead, far away from the Yechean land, and
• 4:45
Speaker 1: he will never return home again. Then, Nurse Euryclea said,
• 4:52
Speaker 1: my child, what are you talking about? But you were
• 4:56
Speaker 1: all hard of belief and have made up your mind
• 5:00
Speaker 1: that your husband is never coming, although he is in
• 5:04
Speaker 1: the house and by his own fireside at this very moment. Besides,
• 5:11
Speaker 1: I can give you another proof. When I was washing him,
• 5:15
Speaker 1: I perceived the scar which the wild boar gave him,
• 5:20
Speaker 1: and I wanted to tell you about it, but in
• 5:22
Speaker 1: his wisdom he would not let me and clapped his
• 5:26
Speaker 1: hands over my mouth. So come with me, and I
• 5:30
Speaker 1: will make this bargain with you. If I am deceiving you,
• 5:35
Speaker 1: you may have me killed by the most cruel death
• 5:39
Speaker 1: you can think of. My dear nurse, said Penelope. However
• 5:45
Speaker 1: wise you may be, you can hardly fathom the counsels
• 5:50
Speaker 1: of the gods. Nevertheless, we will go in search of
• 5:53
Speaker 1: my son, that I may see the corpses of the
• 5:56
Speaker 1: suitors and the man who has killed them. On this
• 6:01
Speaker 1: she came down from her upper room, and while doing so,
• 6:05
Speaker 1: she considered whether she should keep at a distance from
• 6:08
Speaker 1: her husband and question him, or whether she should at
• 6:12
Speaker 1: once go up to him and embrace him. When, however,
• 6:18
Speaker 1: she had crossed the stone floor of the cloister, she
• 6:21
Speaker 1: sat down opposite Ulysses by the fire, against the wall
• 6:25
Speaker 1: at right angles to that by which she had entered,
• 6:29
Speaker 1: while Ulysses sat near one of the bearing posts, looking
• 6:33
Speaker 1: upon the ground and waiting to see what his wife
• 6:37
Speaker 1: would say to him. When she saw him, for a
• 6:40
Speaker 1: long time, she sat silent and as one lost in amazement.
• 6:47
Speaker 1: At one moment she looked him full in the face,
• 6:50
Speaker 1: but then again directly she was misled by his shabby
• 6:55
Speaker 1: clothes and failed to recognize him till tell Lamachus began
• 7:01
Speaker 1: to reproach her, and said, mother, but you are so
• 7:05
Speaker 1: hard that I cannot call you by such a name.
• 7:08
Speaker 1: Why do you keep away from my father in this way?
• 7:12
Speaker 1: Why do you not sit by his side and begin
• 7:15
Speaker 1: talking to him and asking him questions? No other women
• 7:20
Speaker 1: could bear to keep away from her husband when he
• 7:24
Speaker 1: had come back to her after twenty years of absence,
• 7:28
Speaker 1: and after having gone through so much, but your heart
• 7:32
Speaker 1: was always as hard as a stone. Penelope answered, my son,
• 7:40
Speaker 1: I am so lost in astonishment that I can find
• 7:43
Speaker 1: no words in which either to ask questions or to
• 7:46
Speaker 1: answer them. I cannot even look him straight in the face. Still,
• 7:52
Speaker 1: if he really is Ulysses, come back to his own
• 7:54
Speaker 1: home again. We shall get to understand one another better
• 7:58
Speaker 1: by and by, For there are tokens with which we
• 8:02
Speaker 1: two are alone acquainted, and which are hidden from all others.
• 8:09
Speaker 1: Ulysses smiled at this and said to Telemachus, let your
• 8:14
Speaker 1: mother put me to any proof she likes. She will
• 8:18
Speaker 1: make up her mind about it. Presently she rejects me
• 8:22
Speaker 1: for the moment, and believes me to be somebody else,
• 8:26
Speaker 1: because I am covered with dirt and have such bad
• 8:29
Speaker 1: clothes on. Let us, however, consider what we had better
• 8:34
Speaker 1: do next. When one man has killed another, even though
• 8:38
Speaker 1: he was not one who would leave many friends to
• 8:42
Speaker 1: take up his quarrel, the man who has killed him
• 8:45
Speaker 1: must still say good bye to his friends and fly
• 8:49
Speaker 1: the country, whereas we have been killing the stay of
• 8:53
Speaker 1: a whole town and all the picked youth of Ithaca.
• 8:58
Speaker 1: I would have you consider matter, look to it yourself.
• 9:03
Speaker 1: Father answered Telemachus, For they say you are the wisest
• 9:07
Speaker 1: counselor in the world, and that there is no other
• 9:11
Speaker 1: mortal man who can compare with you. We will follow
• 9:15
Speaker 1: you with right good will, nor shall you find us
• 9:18
Speaker 1: to fail you. In so far as our strength holds out.
• 9:24
Speaker 1: I will say what I think will be best answered, Ulysses. First,
• 9:29
Speaker 1: wash and put your shirts on. Tell the maids also
• 9:32
Speaker 1: to go to their own room and dress. Femius shall
• 9:37
Speaker 1: then strike up a dance tune on his lyre, so
• 9:40
Speaker 1: that if people outside here, or any of the neighbors,
• 9:45
Speaker 1: or someone going along the street happens to notice it,
• 9:49
Speaker 1: they may think there is a wedding in the house,
• 9:52
Speaker 1: and no rumors about the death of the suitors will
• 9:55
Speaker 1: get about in the town before we can escape to
• 9:58
Speaker 1: the woods upon my own land. Once there we will
• 10:03
Speaker 1: settle which of the courses Heaven vouchsafes us shall seem wisest.
• 10:09
Speaker 1: Thus did he speak, and they did even as he
• 10:12
Speaker 1: had said. First they washed and put their shirts on,
• 10:17
Speaker 1: while the women got ready. Then Femius took his lyre
• 10:21
Speaker 1: and set them all longing for sweet song and stately dance.
• 10:26
Speaker 1: The house re echoed with the sound of men and
• 10:29
Speaker 1: women dancing, and the people outside said, I suppose the
• 10:33
Speaker 1: queen has been getting married at last. She ought to
• 10:37
Speaker 1: be ashamed of herself for not continuing to protect her
• 10:40
Speaker 1: husband's property until he comes home. This was what they said,
• 10:46
Speaker 1: but they did not know what it was that had
• 10:49
Speaker 1: been happening. The upper servant Urinomi washed and anointed Ulysses
• 10:55
Speaker 1: in his own house, and gave him a shirt and cloak,
• 11:00
Speaker 1: while Minerva made him look taller and stronger than before.
• 11:05
Speaker 1: She also made the hair grow thick on the top
• 11:07
Speaker 1: of his head and flow down in curls like hyacinthe blossoms.
• 11:13
Speaker 1: She glorified him about the head and shoulders, just as
• 11:17
Speaker 1: a skillful workman who has studied art of all kinds
• 11:20
Speaker 1: under Vulcan or Minerva, and his work is full of beauty.
• 11:27
Speaker 1: In enriches a piece of silver plate by gilding it.
• 11:31
Speaker 1: He came from the bath, looking like one of the immortals,
• 11:35
Speaker 1: and sat down opposite his wife on the seat he
• 11:38
Speaker 1: had left. My dear said he Heaven has endowed you
• 11:43
Speaker 1: with a heart more unyielding than woman ever yet had
• 11:49
Speaker 1: no other woman could bear to keep away from her husband.
• 11:53
Speaker 1: When he had come back to her after twenty years
• 11:56
Speaker 1: of absence, and after having gone through so much. But come, nurse,
• 12:02
Speaker 1: get a bed ready for me. I will sleep alone,
• 12:06
Speaker 1: for this woman has a heart as hard as iron.
• 12:11
Speaker 1: My dear, said Penelope. I have no wish to set
• 12:15
Speaker 1: myself up, nor to depreciate you, but I am not
• 12:20
Speaker 1: struck by your appearance, for I very well remember what
• 12:24
Speaker 1: kind of a man you were when you set sail
• 12:27
Speaker 1: from Ithaca. Nevertheless, Euryclara, take his bed outside the bed
• 12:34
Speaker 1: chamber that he himself built. Bring the bed outside this room,
• 12:39
Speaker 1: and put bedding upon it, with fleeces, good coverlets and blankets.
• 12:45
Speaker 1: She said this to try him, But Ulysses was very
• 12:49
Speaker 1: angry and said, wife, I am much displeased at what
• 12:54
Speaker 1: you have just been saying. Who has been taking my
• 12:58
Speaker 1: bed from the place in which I left it? He
• 13:01
Speaker 1: must have found it a hard task, no matter how
• 13:04
Speaker 1: skilled a workman he was, unless some god came and
• 13:08
Speaker 1: helped him to shift it. There is no man living,
• 13:12
Speaker 1: however strong and in his prime, who could move it
• 13:16
Speaker 1: from its place. For it is a marvelous curiosity which
• 13:20
Speaker 1: I made with my very own hands. There was a
• 13:24
Speaker 1: young olive growing within the precincts of the house in
• 13:28
Speaker 1: full vigor, and about as thick as a bearing post.
• 13:32
Speaker 1: I built my room round this with strong walls of
• 13:35
Speaker 1: stone and a roof to cover them, and I made
• 13:39
Speaker 1: the doors strong and well fitting. Then I cut off
• 13:44
Speaker 1: the top boughs of the olive tree and left the
• 13:46
Speaker 1: stump standing. This I dressed roughly from the root upwards,
• 13:53
Speaker 1: and then worked with carpenter's tools well and skillfully, straightening
• 13:58
Speaker 1: my work by drawing a line in the world wood
• 14:00
Speaker 1: and making it into a bed prop. I then bored
• 14:04
Speaker 1: a hole down the middle and made it the sector
• 14:07
Speaker 1: post of my bed, at which I worked till I
• 14:11
Speaker 1: had finished it in laying it with gold and silver.
• 14:15
Speaker 1: After this I stretched a hide of crimson leather from
• 14:18
Speaker 1: one side of it to the other. So you shall
• 14:22
Speaker 1: see I know all about it, and I desire to
• 14:25
Speaker 1: learn whether it is still there, or whether anyone has
• 14:29
Speaker 1: been removing it by cutting down the olive tree at
• 14:33
Speaker 1: its roots. When she heard the sure proofs Ulysses now
• 14:38
Speaker 1: gave her, she fairly broke down. She flew weeping to
• 14:43
Speaker 1: his side, flung her arms about his neck, and kissed him.
• 14:48
Speaker 1: Do not be angry with me Ulysses, she cried, you,
• 14:53
Speaker 1: who are the wisest of mankind. We have suffered both
• 14:58
Speaker 1: of us. Heaven has denied us the happiness of spending
• 15:03
Speaker 1: our youth and of growing old together. Do not then
• 15:07
Speaker 1: be aggrieved or take it amiss that I did not
• 15:11
Speaker 1: embrace you. Thus as soon as I saw you, I
• 15:15
Speaker 1: have been shuddering all the time through fear that someone
• 15:19
Speaker 1: might come here and deceive me with a lying story.
• 15:23
Speaker 1: For there are many very wicked people going about. Jove's
• 15:28
Speaker 1: daughter Helen would never have yielded herself to a man
• 15:32
Speaker 1: from a foreign country if she had known that the
• 15:35
Speaker 1: sons of a Chean's would come after her and bring
• 15:39
Speaker 1: her back. Heaven put it in her heart to do wrong,
• 15:44
Speaker 1: and she gave no thought to that sin which has
• 15:48
Speaker 1: been the source of all our sorrows. Now, however, that
• 15:53
Speaker 1: you have convinced me by showing that you know all
• 15:56
Speaker 1: about our bed, which no human being has ever seen
• 16:00
Speaker 1: but you and I and this single maid servant, the
• 16:03
Speaker 1: daughter of Actor, who was given me by my father
• 16:07
Speaker 1: on my marriage, and who keeps the doors of our room.
• 16:12
Speaker 1: Hard of belief. Though I have been, I can mistrust
• 16:17
Speaker 1: no longer. Then, Ulysses, in his turn, melted and wept
• 16:23
Speaker 1: as he clasped his dear and faithful wife to his bosom.
• 16:28
Speaker 1: As the sight of land is welcome to men who
• 16:32
Speaker 1: are swimming towards the shore. When Neptune has wrecked their
• 16:35
Speaker 1: ship with the fury of his winds and waves. A
• 16:40
Speaker 1: few alone reach the land, and these covered with brine
• 16:44
Speaker 1: are thankful when they find themselves on firm ground and
• 16:48
Speaker 1: out of danger. Even so was her husband welcome to
• 16:54
Speaker 1: her as she looked upon him, and she could not
• 16:58
Speaker 1: tear her too fair arms from about his neck. Indeed,
• 17:04
Speaker 1: they would have gone on indulging their sorrow till rosy
• 17:08
Speaker 1: fingered morn appeared. Had not Minerva determined otherwise, and held
• 17:14
Speaker 1: night back in the far west, while she would not
• 17:18
Speaker 1: suffer dawn to leave Osianus, nor to yoke the two steeds,
• 17:23
Speaker 1: Lampis and Phaeton, that bear her onward to break the
• 17:27
Speaker 1: day upon mankind. At last, However, Ulysses said, wife, we
• 17:34
Speaker 1: have not yet reached the end of our troubles. I
• 17:38
Speaker 1: have an unknown amount of toil still to undergo. It
• 17:42
Speaker 1: is long and difficult, but I must go through with it.
• 17:47
Speaker 1: For thus the shade of Tyrasaeus prophesied concerning me on
• 17:52
Speaker 1: the day when I went down into Hades to ask
• 17:54
Speaker 1: about my return and that of my companions. But now
• 17:59
Speaker 1: let us go to bed, that we may lie down
• 18:02
Speaker 1: and enjoyed the blessed boon of sleep. You shall go
• 18:08
Speaker 1: to bed as soon as you please, replied Penelope, now
• 18:11
Speaker 1: that the gods have sent you home to your own
• 18:14
Speaker 1: good house and to your country. But as Heaven has
• 18:18
Speaker 1: put it in your mind to speak of it, tell
• 18:21
Speaker 1: me about the task that lies before you. I shall
• 18:25
Speaker 1: have to hear about it later, So it is better
• 18:27
Speaker 1: I should be told at once, my dear, answered Ulysses,
• 18:33
Speaker 1: Why should you press me to tell you? Still? I
• 18:37
Speaker 1: will not conceal it from you. Though you will not
• 18:40
Speaker 1: like it, I do not like it myself. For Tyresayus
• 18:45
Speaker 1: bade me travel far and wide, carrying and ore, till
• 18:50
Speaker 1: I came to a country where the people have never
• 18:53
Speaker 1: heard of the sea, and do not even mix salt
• 18:56
Speaker 1: with their food. They know nothing about ships, nor oars
• 19:01
Speaker 1: that are as the wings of a ship. He gave
• 19:05
Speaker 1: me this certain token, which I will not hide from you.
• 19:09
Speaker 1: He said that a wayfarer should meet me and ask
• 19:13
Speaker 1: me whether it was a winnowing shovel that I had
• 19:16
Speaker 1: on my shoulder. On this I was to fix my
• 19:20
Speaker 1: oar in the ground and sacrifice a ram, a bull,
• 19:24
Speaker 1: and a boar to Neptune, after which I was to
• 19:28
Speaker 1: go home and offer hecatombs to all the gods in heaven,
• 19:33
Speaker 1: one after the other. As for myself, he said that
• 19:38
Speaker 1: death should come to me from the sea, and that
• 19:42
Speaker 1: my life should ebb away very gently when I was
• 19:45
Speaker 1: full of years and peace of mind, and my people
• 19:50
Speaker 1: should bless me. All this, he said, should surely come
• 19:55
Speaker 1: to pass. And Penelope said, if the gods are going
• 20:00
Speaker 1: to vouchsafe you a happier time in your old age,
• 20:05
Speaker 1: you may hope then to have some respite from misfortune.
• 20:11
Speaker 1: Thus did they converse. Meanwhile, Uryinem and the nurse took
• 20:16
Speaker 1: torches and made the bed ready with soft coverlets. As
• 20:19
Speaker 1: soon as they had laid them, the nurse went back
• 20:22
Speaker 1: into the house to go to her rest, leaving the
• 20:25
Speaker 1: bedchamber woman Uryinymee to show Ulysses and Penelope to bed
• 20:31
Speaker 1: by torchlight. When she had conducted them to their room,
• 20:35
Speaker 1: she went back, and they then came joyfully to the
• 20:39
Speaker 1: rights of their own old bed. Telemachus, Philotius and the
• 20:45
Speaker 1: swineherd now left off dancing, and made the women leave
• 20:50
Speaker 1: off also. They then laid themselves down to sleep in
• 20:54
Speaker 1: the cloisters. When Ulysses and Penelope had had their fill
• 21:00
Speaker 1: of love, they fell talking with one another. She told
• 21:05
Speaker 1: him how much she had had to bear in seeing
• 21:09
Speaker 1: the house filled with a crowd of wicked suitors, who
• 21:12
Speaker 1: had killed so many sheep and oxen on her account,
• 21:16
Speaker 1: and had drunk so many casts of wine. Ulysses, in
• 21:22
Speaker 1: his turn, told her what he had suffered and how
• 21:26
Speaker 1: much trouble he had given to other people. He told
• 21:30
Speaker 1: her everything, and she was so delighted to listen that
• 21:34
Speaker 1: she never went to sleep till he had ended his
• 21:37
Speaker 1: whole story. He began with the victory over Sichons, and
• 21:43
Speaker 1: how he thence reached the fertile land of the lotus eaters.
• 21:47
Speaker 1: He told her all about the Cyclops and how he
• 21:50
Speaker 1: had punished him for having so ruthlessly eaten his brave comrades.
• 21:56
Speaker 1: How he then went on to Aeolus, who received him
• 22:00
Speaker 1: hospitably and furthered him on his way, And even so
• 22:05
Speaker 1: he was not to reach home, for to his grief
• 22:08
Speaker 1: a hurricane carried him out to sea again. How he
• 22:12
Speaker 1: went to the Lastragonian city, Telepylus, where the people destroyed
• 22:17
Speaker 1: all his ships with their crews, save himself and his
• 22:21
Speaker 1: own ship. Only then he told of cunning Circe and
• 22:26
Speaker 1: her craft, And how he sailed to the chill house
• 22:30
Speaker 1: of Hades to consult the ghost of the theban prophet Teresaeus.
• 22:35
Speaker 1: And how he saw his old comrade in arms, and
• 22:39
Speaker 1: his mother, who bore him and brought him up when
• 22:42
Speaker 1: he was a child. How he then heard the wondrous
• 22:46
Speaker 1: singing of the sirens, and went on to the wandering
• 22:51
Speaker 1: rocks and terrible Charybdis, and to Scilla, whom no man
• 22:56
Speaker 1: had ever yet passed in safety. How his men then
• 23:01
Speaker 1: ate the cattle of the sun God, And how Jove
• 23:04
Speaker 1: therefore struck the ship with his thunderbolts, so that all
• 23:09
Speaker 1: his men perished together, himself alone being left alive. How
• 23:15
Speaker 1: at last he reached the Ogigean island and the nymph Calypso,
• 23:21
Speaker 1: who kept him there in a cave and fed him
• 23:24
Speaker 1: and wanted him to marry her, in which case she
• 23:28
Speaker 1: had tended making him immortal, so that he should never
• 23:32
Speaker 1: grow old. But she could not persuade him to let
• 23:36
Speaker 1: her do so. And how after much suffering, he had
• 23:40
Speaker 1: found his way to the Facians, who had treated him
• 23:44
Speaker 1: as though he had been a god, and sent him
• 23:47
Speaker 1: back in a ship to his own country, after having
• 23:51
Speaker 1: given him gold, bronze, and raiment in great abundance. This
• 23:57
Speaker 1: was the last thing about which he told her, or
• 24:00
Speaker 1: hear a deep sleep took hold upon him and eased
• 24:05
Speaker 1: the burden of his sorrows. Then Minerva bethought her of
• 24:11
Speaker 1: another matter. When she deemed that Ulysses had had both
• 24:15
Speaker 1: of his wife and of repose, she bade gold and
• 24:20
Speaker 1: thrown dawn rise out of oceanus, that she might shed
• 24:25
Speaker 1: light upon mankind. On this Ulysses rose from his comfortable
• 24:30
Speaker 1: bed and said to Penelope, wife, we have both of
• 24:36
Speaker 1: us had our full share of troubles. You hear in
• 24:41
Speaker 1: lamenting my absence, and I in being prevented from getting home,
• 24:46
Speaker 1: though I was longing all the time to do so. Now, however,
• 24:52
Speaker 1: that we have at last come together, take care of
• 24:55
Speaker 1: the property that is in this house. As for the
• 24:59
Speaker 1: sheep and goats which the wicked suitors have eaten, I
• 25:03
Speaker 1: will take many myself by force from other people, and
• 25:07
Speaker 1: will compel thee chains to make good the rest till
• 25:12
Speaker 1: they shall have filled all my yards. I am now
• 25:16
Speaker 1: going to the wooded lands out in the country to
• 25:18
Speaker 1: see my father, who has so long been grieved on
• 25:22
Speaker 1: my account. And to yourself. I will give these instructions,
• 25:27
Speaker 1: though you have little need of them. At sunrise, it
• 25:31
Speaker 1: will at once get abroad that I have been killing
• 25:34
Speaker 1: the suitors. Go upstairs, therefore, and stay there with your women.
• 25:40
Speaker 1: See nobody, and ask no questions. As he spoke, he
• 25:46
Speaker 1: girded on his armor. Then he roused Telemachus, Phelotius, and Eumaeus,
• 25:53
Speaker 1: and told them all to put on their armor as well.
• 25:57
Speaker 1: This they did, and armed themselves. When they had done so,
• 26:02
Speaker 1: they opened the gates and sallied forth, Ulysses leading the way.
• 26:07
Speaker 1: It was now daylight, but Minerva nevertheless concealed them in
• 26:13
Speaker 1: darkness and led them quickly out of the town. End
• 26:20
Speaker 1: of Book twenty three.
