Latest / Recovering Out Loud / Self-Forgiveness in Recovery: Why You Can't Afford to Hate Yourself Sober
Transcript
- 0:00The day I stopped trying to forgive myself was the day I
- 0:06actually started. This is another one of those
- 0:08great dichotomies in addiction recovery, where the less I try
- 0:14to control the outcomes, the less I try to manipulate the
- 0:19circumstances around me and do God's job instead of God's work,
- 0:26or the universe's job instead of the universe's work.
- 0:32The better my life gets, the more I'm able to experience that
- 0:36sense of ease and comfort that I used to experience with drinking
- 0:39and drugs, the more I start to be OK in my own skin.
- 0:45It is the great irony of recovery.
- 0:47The less I do, the less I try to put my fingerprints on
- 0:51everything, the better my life ends up getting.
- 0:54The more peace I experience, the more quiet I experienced.
- 0:59At the end of the day, human beings myself for sure.
- 1:03But I will argue that all human beings, especially addicts and
- 1:06Alcoholics, all we want is peace.
- 1:09Just Peace of Mind, peace just quiet.
- 1:12Because the most beautiful experience to feel in addiction
- 1:16recovery is that ease and comfort.
- 1:18That peace without, with no strings attached.
- 1:21When I drank, it was ease and comfort for a minute, and then
- 1:25it went away. And then I if I had one problem,
- 1:28now I had two problems, and many more problems sub in sequence
- 1:34after one after another. I spent the first year of my
- 1:37sobriety the second time around convinced that if I just felt
- 1:42bad enough about what I did, if I beat myself up enough, I would
- 1:47never do it again. If I just made myself really
- 1:51realize how much of a piece of crap I really was in act of
- 1:53addiction, I would change and I would feel better and I would
- 1:57accept who I was and I would move on from my past.
- 2:01But that doesn't work. Spoiler alert here, Shame is not
- 2:06a recovery program Today. The difference between regret
- 2:09that heals you and regret that buries you and why most of us in
- 2:15recovery are doing it backwards. Forgiveness is a tough one.
- 2:19It's it's one of those things where resentment is like
- 2:22drinking poison and hoping the other person dies.
- 2:24If I don't forgive somebody, I'm the only one suffering.
- 2:27Nobody else is thinking about it but me.
- 2:29I'm the only one that's drinking that poison and hoping that
- 2:32person dies. I'm gonna get, I'm planning and
- 2:34prodding. I'm gonna get that mother
- 2:36effort. I'm gonna turn the tables and
- 2:38I'm gonna serve justice as if I'm the one that is capable of
- 2:44serving justice and making sure that things go right.
- 2:47When at the end of the day, it's just me trying to control the
- 2:49outcomes and B in control of the universe, Sheriff of the
- 2:53universe, if I, if you will, forgiveness is not for me.
- 2:56Forgiveness is not for you. Forgiveness is for the other
- 3:00person. When we forgive people and
- 3:02ourselves included, when we forgive the, the, the power
- 3:06experienced after that true forgiveness.
- 3:09And I don't mean going up to somebody and saying, hey, I
- 3:11forgive you, but just letting it go, surrendering the resentment,
- 3:16asking for help, talking about it, getting through it, working
- 3:19through it, journaling, therapy, whatever it looks like for you.
- 3:23When we accept the fact that I can let this person off the
- 3:28hook, I can. It's not even about letting off
- 3:31the hook. That's the wrong terminology.
- 3:32It's it's the, the problem with forgiveness I find a lot of the
- 3:36time is that it ego takes over. And when ego takes over, it's me
- 3:41versus you and or it's me versus me.
- 3:44I need to win here. I need to beat myself up because
- 3:47I deserve it. I need to come out ahead.
- 3:50It's not about that. When we involve ego, there's
- 3:53nothing good that comes with that because now it's US versus
- 3:56them. It's becomes a competition and I
- 3:59want to be right and I want to win.
- 4:01I want to make that person suffer because they need to pay
- 4:04the consequences. As if, again, I am some sort of
- 4:07sheriff of the universe. I'm the police of society.
- 4:11I'm the policeman of good and bad justice.
- 4:16Welcome back or welcome to Recovering Out Loud podcast.
- 4:19I'm your host, Anthony. I'm an addict and an alcoholic.
- 4:21Been in recovery since 2015. Had a relapse at about 7 1/2
- 4:25years sober. Came back in in January of 25.
- 4:28I'm now almost a year and a half sober again today, by the grace
- 4:30of God and the grace of my recovery community, I shouldn't
- 4:34be here. Let's be honest, I should be
- 4:36dead. I should be in jail.
- 4:38But I am and I'm grateful for that and I thank God every
- 4:41single day when I wake up and when I go to bed because this is
- 4:45all bonus time for me, man. I didn't think I'd make it this
- 4:48far. I didn't think I'd make it out
- 4:50of a lot of the scrapes that I put myself into.
- 4:52But I'm here today to tell the story and offer my experience.
- 4:56I'm not talking down from the spiritual hilltop again.
- 4:59I'm not better or worse than any of you, but I am here to share
- 5:02my experience with the hopes that one person gets something
- 5:04out of it because that's what was done to me.
- 5:06When somebody else shares their experience, I benefit from it.
- 5:09And so that is my hope with all these episodes in today's on
- 5:13self forgiveness because let's face it, shame is a huge part of
- 5:17addiction. It keeps a lot of people stuck.
- 5:19Guilt and shame, mainly shame. Forgiveness is that powerful
- 5:23tool that a lot of us don't want to use because again, we're
- 5:27going to look foolish. We're going to lose the fight,
- 5:29They're going to win. I'm going to let them off the
- 5:31hook. It's all bullshit.
- 5:32I'm going to let myself off the hook.
- 5:34Let's talk about it. So I want to do a quick check
- 5:37in. Where are you today?
- 5:38What's been on your mind all week?
- 5:41For me, I would say my biggest struggle, my unmanageability
- 5:44today in this past week has been patience.
- 5:47The lack of patience, the inability to accept life on
- 5:51life's terms. This the current circumstances.
- 5:53It can't be this way. I should be that getting more
- 5:56money. I should be doing this.
- 5:58I should be doing more I bet, but but should and would and
- 6:01could have should should You should remove should from your
- 6:05vocabulary. Expectations are nothing but
- 6:09premeditated resentments. And resentments as we know, like
- 6:11I said, are poison and no one else is thinking about it except
- 6:15for me and you. Let that shit go.
- 6:18I'm in the middle of it right now.
- 6:20So I'm going through something where again, I'm not getting the
- 6:23results I think I should be getting should.
- 6:25Again, I'm not getting the results that I think I deserve.
- 6:29Things are moving very slow. I thought that I would be better
- 6:33off at this point in, in a, in sobriety and recovery.
- 6:36And when I say better off, I mean from a financial
- 6:38standpoint, from an emotional standpoint.
- 6:42When I struggle, sometimes I think to myself, man, I, you
- 6:45know, I should be, I should know better than this.
- 6:48This is I have the tools to deal with this.
- 6:50Why am I not dealing with it? Why does it keep coming back?
- 6:53These thoughts listen, it's out of my control.
- 6:55What I do know for without a shadow of a doubt is this too
- 6:59shall pass. Everything is temporary,
- 7:01everything comes and everything goes in life.
- 7:02Everything just not in my time. And that's the big realization
- 7:06here is I need to accept the current nature of the situation.
- 7:09Doesn't mean I need to be a doormat and do nothing about it.
- 7:12I need to accept what is going on in life and then look for
- 7:15solutions. I don't sit in the problem.
- 7:18I do sit in the problem, but I try not to sit in the problem.
- 7:21I focus on solutions. The only way I can come up with
- 7:23the solutions is if my mind is quiet, if I'm at ease, if I am
- 7:27undisturbed. So how do I do that?
- 7:30I pray, I ask for help, I ask God to remove the fear, to
- 7:34remove the financial insecurity, to remove the resentment.
- 7:37Because when I'm quiet, the creativity comes and I'm able to
- 7:41solve any problem. Maybe not right in this instant.
- 7:44Maybe a lot of the time is do nothing.
- 7:46A lot of the time is just be patient, do the next right
- 7:49thing. You need to stop worrying and
- 7:51just let it happen. Trust the process.
- 7:54That's the answer a lot of the time.
- 7:55I find every person in recovery that you talk to is carrying
- 8:00something they haven't put down. Self forgiveness is the work.
- 8:04Nobody markets because nobody wants to buy it.
- 8:08But it's the work. It's the small moments.
- 8:09I always talk about this. It's the moments you don't see
- 8:12on social media. The in between the going to the
- 8:15recovery meetings, the journaling, the praying, the
- 8:17helping other people. Those aren't flashy sexy
- 8:20moments. So we don't romanticize them on
- 8:23social media. We don't post that stuff because
- 8:25it's boring and it's unfun and maybe we should be posting it
- 8:28more. That is how recovery is built.
- 8:30Not in the winds. It's built in the tough moments
- 8:33where I am trudging the road to happy destiny.
- 8:35I am just in the trench getting after it, doing the do things
- 8:40that I don't feel like doing. Why self forgiveness is the
- 8:45hardest step, the hierarchy of forgiveness most people don't
- 8:49see. Forgiving others is hard, but
- 8:51it's socially encouraged. Being forgiven by others is
- 8:55humbling but available through amends.
- 8:59And listen, not everyone's going to forgive you, by the way.
- 9:01You could go make amends and live a better life and tell
- 9:05those people that you're doing better and people don't want to
- 9:07hear it. You've heard them too too much.
- 9:09And that's OK. It's not my job again to serve
- 9:12justice in the world. It's not my job to get people to
- 9:15forgive me because then I'm controlling again and I'm acting
- 9:18like the the actor that Shakespeare talks about.
- 9:21I'm trying to control, I'm trying.
- 9:23I'm the actor. I'm trying to control the
- 9:24lights, I'm trying to control the camera, I'm trying to
- 9:26control the stage. Everybody on the stage.
- 9:29If everyone would just stay put, the world would be happy.
- 9:32If everyone just followed my script, the world would be a
- 9:34better place. Alcoholism, right?
- 9:36Alcoholic thinking. I need to feel OK by controlling
- 9:42the future, controlling the outcomes.
- 9:44So we have forgiving others, being forgiven by others, and
- 9:48then the third one, which is forgiving yourself.
- 9:52Almost nobody tells you how and most of us are terrified of it.
- 9:55How do I even do that? It sounds very woo woo to me.
- 9:59The fear underneath it. If I forgive myself, I'll do it
- 10:03again. I'll let myself off the hook.
- 10:05I'm going to repeat the behavior.
- 10:06We treat self punishment like an insurance policy.
- 10:10The trap. Shame doesn't keep you sober.
- 10:13Shame is actually one of the strongest predictors of relapse.
- 10:18June 10. Kent Tangany and colleagues have
- 10:21spent decades showing that shame proneness versus guilt proneness
- 10:28is linked to substance misuse, not protection from it.
- 10:32Shame is a powerful emotion. It's a powerful feeling.
- 10:35You know what makes that go away?
- 10:36Just keep drinking. I'll just drink.
- 10:38I don't want to think about this.
- 10:39I don't want to think about how I've screwed my life up.
- 10:41I don't want to think about all the people I've hurt.
- 10:43I need to drink because it works until it doesn't.
- 10:45The reframe we're building toward here, forgiving yourself,
- 10:49is not letting yourself off the hook.
- 10:52It's getting off the hook so you can actually do the work.
- 10:56I'm going to get myself off the hook so that I can change, I can
- 11:00repair, I can recover, I can amend, I can grow, I can evolve.
- 11:07I can do the work one step at a time.
- 11:11Storyblock one, the things I couldn't forgive myself for.
- 11:17OK, so for one, for me, one specific moment where I really
- 11:20had a hard time forgiving myself was blowing all that money.
- 11:23I'm going to talk about money again because this is a
- 11:25prevalent issue in my life. It's a huge cause of disturbance
- 11:29for me and I want to work through it.
- 11:32Hopefully you can get something out of this.
- 11:34But essentially, I, for a long time, I'm still working through
- 11:38it, clearly could not forgive myself for blowing all that
- 11:40money on hotels, Airbnbs, drugs, partying.
- 11:44I look back now and I'm still paying the price for it.
- 11:47It's painful and I wish it would just go away.
- 11:49But it it wouldn't, I have to pay the consequences of my
- 11:51action. I need to also let myself get
- 11:55off the hook, forgive myself, give myself permission to heal,
- 11:59to move on from it. Because it already happened and
- 12:02I can't control what already happened.
- 12:05I can control how I react to that circumstance.
- 12:09It's done, it happened, I can't change it.
- 12:12How am I going to respond? Am I going to sit in my shit and
- 12:16worry about it all day and cry and complain on the podcast?
- 12:19Or am I going to work through it?
- 12:21Am I going to ask for help? Am I going to put pen to paper
- 12:23and budget and change my life? Do the hard things, the unsexy
- 12:29actions and routines and those small moments every day.
- 12:33And it's not about being perfect.
- 12:35It's about progress, not perfection.
- 12:36I'm better than I was yesterday. That's it.
- 12:39So if I walk through that moment in present tense, what was I
- 12:43telling myself? What was the lie?
- 12:46What was the chaser to that lie? What was the limiting belief
- 12:49here? The lie?
- 12:50What story am I spinning myself with?
- 12:52This one is I'll never get out of it.
- 12:55That's a good one. I'm going to lose my house.
- 12:57I'm going to get, I'm going to be broke.
- 12:59This is never going to end. That's another lie and belief.
- 13:03Those coupled together are dangerous because if I keep
- 13:07repeating that to myself, I am now creating a new belief, a new
- 13:10identity for myself that I don't deserve good things.
- 13:13That's another lie too. There it is.
- 13:15I don't deserve to be out of debt.
- 13:17I don't deserve good things. I don't deserve a good life
- 13:20because I beat myself up and I did this all to myself and it's
- 13:24my fault and poor me. Self pity, another lie, another
- 13:29thing I could not forgive myself for for a long time was
- 13:31relapsing. After 7 1/2 years, I really beat
- 13:34myself up to the point where I was so embarrassed, so ashamed
- 13:36to come back. And that's what kept me sick,
- 13:38kept me sick for a long time. The inability to accept the
- 13:43nature of reality ties in here. Again, this happened, I relapsed
- 13:47and I was in denial. I couldn't admit it because
- 13:50don't you know this can't be happening?
- 13:53I can't fathom the fact that I made a mistake big enough to
- 13:58change my entire life where I knew better, I knew better and I
- 14:02still did it anyways. I have to work through that.
- 14:05I've worked through it a lot. The past is the past.
- 14:08It's happened. How do I forgive myself and move
- 14:11on? Well, it takes time, and time
- 14:13takes time and work, and no one likes to hear that, but it's
- 14:16true. I have to continue to do the
- 14:19recovery work. And what I find is with a
- 14:21connection with my power, higher power, the universe, the sun,
- 14:25the water, whatever you want to call it.
- 14:26My connection with a greater purpose will Get Me Out of that.
- 14:30But I still need to do the work and in therapy and journaling.
- 14:34What is the belief here again? What is the negative belief?
- 14:37What is the limiting belief in all of this?
- 14:39That I don't deserve healing, I don't deserve good things.
- 14:42I don't deserve to be forgiven. Teaching Block 1, Guilt versus
- 14:48shame. The distinction that changes
- 14:49everything. The single most useful
- 14:52distinction I've ever heard in recovery emotions.
- 14:55Guilt is about behavior. Shame is about identity.
- 14:59So guilt is I did something bad. Shame is I'm a bad person for
- 15:03doing that thing. I'm bad.
- 15:06This isn't my line. This is Brene Brown's work, but
- 15:08built on decades of research. And Brame Brown frames it simply
- 15:14Guilt equals I did something bad.
- 15:15Shame equals I am bad. Why This matters in recovery.
- 15:21Guilt is a working signal. It points at behavior.
- 15:23I made a mistake. I'm human.
- 15:26It motivates repair and dissolves when you make it
- 15:28right, when you make amends, when you own up to it, when you
- 15:31take responsibility. Shame is a closed loop.
- 15:34It tells you the problem is you. You can't make amends for being
- 15:39yourself, so it's tied closely to your identity.
- 15:42So two different versions here. I'll give you an example.
- 15:45Guilt version. I lied to someone.
- 15:47This is just hypothetical. I lied to someone who loved me.
- 15:50I owe them honesty and a different version of me, which
- 15:54leads to a men's change. Peace.
- 15:57The shame version of that. I'm a liar.
- 15:59I'm a piece of garbage, I always have been.
- 16:03Leads to drinking again because what's the point anyways?
- 16:06I'm inherently bad. There's no coming back from
- 16:08this. I am inherently bad, might as
- 16:11well drink. I'm a mess up.
- 16:13I'm a screw up. What's the point?
- 16:16The cruel joke. Most of us were raised on shame
- 16:19as a discipline tool. We confuse it with conscience.
- 16:22We think it's keeping us honest. It's not.
- 16:25It's keeping us sick. So here's how you can test it
- 16:28for yourself. Am I telling myself I did
- 16:30something wrong? Or am I telling myself I am
- 16:32something wrong? The second sentence is a relapse
- 16:35risk, full stop. So this is more than just
- 16:39philosophy, it's it's science. So the work of Tanganyi shows
- 16:43guilt prone people tend toward repair behavior.
- 16:46Shame prone people tend toward avoidance, denial, externalizing
- 16:53blame. So victim mentality and
- 16:56substance use. Same harm, two different
- 16:59emotional responses, 2 completely different recovery
- 17:02outcomes. Storyblock 2.
- 17:04The relapse reckoning, as you know, I had 7 1/2 years and I
- 17:08went back out. I remember exactly the day it
- 17:11happened. It was a long process.
- 17:12It didn't happen overnight. Relapse never does.
- 17:14It happened in the weeks, months leading up to that day.
- 17:17The aftermath wasn't the drinking of that.
- 17:20The aftermath was the math. I just threw away 7 1/2 years.
- 17:24That story I told myself in my head and I was in denial for a
- 17:27long time too. I told myself I wasn't in a
- 17:29relapse when Foley was abusing ADHD medication and buying it
- 17:33online. The shame voice is you of all
- 17:36people. You were the one telling other
- 17:38people how to do this. You were in recovery a a member
- 17:42of recovery and now you go and do this.
- 17:44Way to go pal. The thing I had to learn the
- 17:47hard way was if I couldn't forgive myself for the relapse I
- 17:51was going to stay relapsed. And I did for a long time.
- 17:54Shame is the fuel for the next drink period.
- 17:57Teaching block 2 what self forgiveness actually is and
- 18:02isn't what it isn't. So self forgiveness is not
- 18:06letting yourself off the hook. You stay on the hook of repair.
- 18:10You get off the hook of identity.
- 18:13It's not forgetting you remember exactly.
- 18:16That's how you don't repeat it. It's not a feeling that arrives
- 18:201 morning. It's a practice you do over and
- 18:23over and over until one day you notice you're not flinching
- 18:28anymore. It's not saying I was sick.
- 18:31It wasn't me, it was you. A version of you owning that is
- 18:35the door. Self forgiveness is a decision
- 18:39repeated, not a destination. Separating the ACT from the
- 18:44identity I did harm does not equal I am harm.
- 18:47Making amends, including the amends you owe yourself.
- 18:51Step based recovery traditions have long hold held the amends
- 18:55process is incomplete if you skip yourself, you can't pour
- 18:59from an empty container and you can't keep drinking from a
- 19:02poisoned. 1 Self compassion is these three things working
- 19:07together ready self kindness instead of self judgement. 2
- 19:13common humanity recognizing suffering and failure are a part
- 19:17of being human, not proof you're uniquely broken.
- 19:20And three, mindfulness, holding painful feelings without
- 19:25exaggerating or suppressing them.
- 19:28Why does this matter for us? Addiction culture and a lot of
- 19:31recovery culture can run on self flagellation.
- 19:34So I'm beating myself over the head with a 2 by 4.
- 19:36Self compassion sounds soft. The research says it's actually
- 19:39the strongest predictor of follow through on hard change.
- 19:43Self punishment is not accountability.
- 19:47Self punishment is the avoidance of accountability.
- 19:50Because while you're hating yourself, you're not actually
- 19:53doing the repair. Forgiving yourself is not the
- 19:56reward for doing the work, it's the prerequisite.
- 19:59Self forgiveness practice. So not a worksheet way of
- 20:03living. Take what you need, leave what
- 20:04you don't like. Name So one.
- 20:07I'm going to name these out. There's five of them.
- 20:09Name the specific behavior, not the identity.
- 20:12Out loud or on paper. I like to do it on paper.
- 20:15I did blank, not I am blank. Watch the language.
- 20:18Language police it gently. Words are important.
- 20:21Look at how you're talking yourself.
- 20:23The most important conversation you have every day is the one
- 20:25you have with yourself. 2 Make the amends you can make direct
- 20:30where possible, living amends where not possible.
- 20:33The harm you did to yourself counts.
- 20:36Write Write yourself a letter you owe yourself.
- 20:38Forgive yourself in a letter. We did that in treatment.
- 20:40Very powerful stuff. Three, find one other human
- 20:44being who knows the worst thing. So your biggest secret shame
- 20:47dies in the light. It does not die in your head.
- 20:50The reason we stay stuck is because we keep the story
- 20:53private. I always talk about this
- 20:54secrets. You're only as sick as your
- 20:56secrets. Go and tell somebody you trust,
- 20:59Tell them what you're going through #4 notice the relapse of
- 21:03the mind, the emotional relapse, your emotional sobriety.
- 21:06How was your emotional sobriety today?
- 21:08Every time you catch yourself running the highlight reel of
- 21:11your worst memories, that's not accountability, that's a
- 21:14craving. Or AI wouldn't even say a
- 21:16craving. That's a obsession of the mind.
- 21:19Treat it like one. Call someone, move your body,
- 21:22don't sit in it. Go outside for a walk 5.
- 21:25Do the next right thing. And if you can't do that, do the
- 21:29next thing right. Make your bed, brush your teeth,
- 21:32make dinner, go to the gym, go for a walk.
- 21:35This is the oldest line in recovery for a reason.
- 21:38Self forgiveness is built in the present, not negotiated about
- 21:42the past. Once again, the day I stopped
- 21:45trying to forgive myself was the day I actually started.
- 21:49Because I stopped treating. Because I stopped treating it
- 21:53like a feeling I needed to earn and started treating it like a
- 21:58practice I needed to do action against my contrary to my best
- 22:04thinking. That is sobriety man.
- 22:07That is recovery. I am taking daily action
- 22:10contrary to my better best thinking, my best beliefs.
- 22:16I don't really know why I'm doing this, but I'm going to do
- 22:18it anyways because that guy is doing it and it's working for
- 22:21him. He's happy, he's sober, he's
- 22:24peaceful. I want that.
- 22:25So I got to do what he did to get that.
- 22:27Simple. Not easy.
- 22:30If you've done something you don't think you can come back
- 22:32from, I promise you the way back is not through more self hatred
- 22:37or self flatulence. Flatulence or beating yourself
- 22:40up, or anger or resentment or punishment or discipline.
- 22:45No discipline's a good one, but you don't need to beat yourself
- 22:47up. You've tried that already.
- 22:50It didn't work. That's why you're here.
- 22:53We need help. I need help every day.
- 22:55I need help. I still don't want to do the
- 22:56things that I need to do to do things.
- 22:58It's painful, it's uncomfortable.
- 23:00It's work. But I know I'm going to get the
- 23:02results at the end of the day if I just keep doing it one step at
- 23:05a time. You are not the worst thing you
- 23:08did. You are what you do next, your
- 23:12motive. Just keep moving.
- 23:14Do the next right thing. Just keep going.
- 23:17The worst thing you can do is give up and say it's not going
- 23:19to work and then sit in your house all day and think about
- 23:23yourself. Get moving, do the action or
- 23:26suffer the consequences. Realistically, at the end of the
- 23:29day, that's really what I suffer the consequences all the time
- 23:32when I don't do the things I should.
- 23:33I ought to be doing the recovery.
- 23:36Do things that helped me in the beginning.
- 23:38They don't change today. They're the same things.
- 23:41It looks a lot different, but the principles are the same, the
- 23:45actions are the same. I just got to keep going, and so
- 23:48do you. And if you're going through it
- 23:50right now, this too shall pass. Have faith.
- 23:53Know that it's going to get better if I just stay on the
- 23:57course. Par for the course on the path.
- 23:59Keep doing the next right thing. It's going to work out.
- 24:02I know that deep in my heart and I have to keep reminding myself
- 24:04of that because a lot of the time it doesn't feel like it's
- 24:07going to work out and it feels like this pain is going to last
- 24:09forever and it feels like I'm never going to overcome this and
- 24:12never get out of this. Trust me, I have many, many
- 24:16experiences where I got through it and I'm sure you do too.
- 24:19Think about all the times you've gotten through hard things just
- 24:22because it doesn't look the way it looks now, just because
- 24:26you're you're saying to yourself, Oh no, but this is
- 24:27bigger. This is harder than that thing I
- 24:29went through before. No, it's not.
- 24:31The only reason you think that is because your perception
- 24:33looking back on it, it looks easy.
- 24:35Now I'll give you an example. Running 3 marathons.
- 24:38I never thought I could run a marathon when I did it.
- 24:42I believe that could do it. But I, throughout that process,
- 24:45I, I, there was times where I did, I believe that could not do
- 24:48it. I believe that it was too hard,
- 24:49too far, too much work, and then I did it.
- 24:53I can translate that experience and listen, you don't have to
- 24:56have run a marathon. I'm sure I know for a fact you
- 24:59have an experience in your life that you've gone through that
- 25:02you didn't think you could get through.
- 25:03Use that experience. Put it in the cookie jar.
- 25:05As David Goggins says, save all your hardest experiences, all
- 25:10your hardest trials and tribulations, all your hardest
- 25:13adversity. Put them in the cookie jar.
- 25:15You got through them because you're here today.
- 25:18Use that going forward. I can do anything if I put my
- 25:21mind to it. If I submit the outcome, if I
- 25:25just do the work in the beginning and turn over the
- 25:28results up to the universe, I'm going to get the results.
- 25:31Not in my time and not the way I think I'm going to get them, but
- 25:34I will get them. And I will find that at the end
- 25:38of the day, what I needed and what I wanted were the exact
- 25:42same thing. I think I need the car.
- 25:44I think I need the bigger paycheck.
- 25:46I think I need the bigger house right now, but I don't.
- 25:50I just want those things because I want to to believe that that's
- 25:54what will make me happy and comfortable when what I need and
- 25:57what I want are at the same level playing field.
- 25:59My life is good today. Try harder to bring those into
- 26:04conjunction with each other, into agreement with each other.
- 26:08What I need and what I want. Those need to be the same for me
- 26:12today. It's simple, not easy.
