0:46
Speaker 4: I have in my I have in the building. Lisa
0:49
Speaker 4: Odie Hello, and Hollis Lewis and uh, we got it.
0:53
Speaker 4: We got a pretty really good guest today and Lisa
0:57
Speaker 4: is going to give us a bio and introduce them
1:01
Speaker 4: and we'll go from there.
1:02
Speaker 5: This bio may take a minute because they say this
1:04
Speaker 5: guy's resume is pretty impressive.
1:06
Speaker 6: And is deserving.
1:07
Speaker 5: It's very deserving. So in the audience they need to
1:10
Speaker 5: grab some popcorn and sit back and relax and enjoy.
1:13
Speaker 5: So our guest tonight is a nineteen eighty eight graduate
1:17
Speaker 5: of Marshall University. He played football for the Herd between
1:21
Speaker 5: the years nineteen eighty five and nineteen eighty nineteen eighty
1:26
Speaker 5: five and nineteen eighty eight as a safety, and in
1:28
Speaker 5: nineteen eighty seven he led the Southern Conference with ten
1:31
Speaker 5: interceptions and was second on the team with one hundred
1:34
Speaker 5: and twenty four tackles. I know Carl likes all of this.
1:37
Speaker 5: His senior year at Marshall led the team to a
1:40
Speaker 5: landmark come from behind when at Louisville and a birth
1:44
Speaker 5: in Marshall's first ever national championship game in the Division
1:47
Speaker 5: one Double A area. He also captured honorable mention All
1:53
Speaker 5: American honors and first team All Southern Conference honors. He
1:59
Speaker 5: posted a The Herd posted a ten and five record overall,
2:02
Speaker 5: and they were a national runner up to Northern Louisiana
2:07
Speaker 5: nineteen eighty seven. Not long after graduation in ninety one,
2:11
Speaker 5: he joined Jim Tressel as an outside linebacker coach at
2:14
Speaker 5: Youngstown State, where the Penguins won three NCUBLEA Division one
2:20
Speaker 5: Double A national championships. Ninety six, he was a defensive
2:25
Speaker 5: ends coach under Glenn Mason at Minnesota, and while there,
2:29
Speaker 5: his defense twice set school records and averaged forty point
2:34
Speaker 5: seven sacks during a three year span. Pretty impressive rate.
2:38
Speaker 5: That's pretty good, pretty impressive. Two thousand and one, he
2:40
Speaker 5: reunited with coach Trestle at Ohio State as a defensive
2:44
Speaker 5: coordinator and the Buckeyes posted a forty and eleven record.
2:47
Speaker 5: He finally returned to Marshall on April fourteenth, two thousand
2:50
Speaker 5: and five, and served five seasons as head coach and
2:53
Speaker 5: helped the team transition from the MIC to Conference USA.
2:57
Speaker 5: He also had the honor of coaching running back Ahmaud
3:00
Speaker 5: Bradshaw during his tenure there. He later finished his coaching
3:04
Speaker 5: career with South Florida, Texas A and M Michigan State,
3:07
Speaker 5: Florida State, and then eventually the USFL. So please welcome
3:11
Speaker 5: to the podcast tonight, Coach Mark Snyder. Welcome, coach.
3:15
Speaker 7: Thank you guys. You know that that bio makes me
3:17
Speaker 7: sound old.
3:19
Speaker 5: Join the crowd, here goes.
3:24
Speaker 6: Coach.
3:24
Speaker 4: One of the one of the interesting questions that I
3:28
Speaker 4: have for you right out of the shoot is now,
3:33
Speaker 4: as you look at as you look at the game,
3:36
Speaker 4: you look at the coaching, you look at the players,
3:39
Speaker 4: and the whole n I L stuff.
3:42
Speaker 6: When you look at it? What does it look like
3:45
Speaker 6: to you?
3:47
Speaker 7: Well, before I get to that, let me say this.
3:51
Speaker 7: I was a fan of Carl Lee. I went to
3:57
Speaker 7: Marshall games. I've always wanted I've always wanted to say
3:59
Speaker 7: that I was a quarterback, but I was in a
4:03
Speaker 7: safety body. And then I had a Minnesota and I
4:06
Speaker 7: got to watch thirty nine a little bit. Uh, just
4:09
Speaker 7: one of my idols, man, big time West Virginia. It
4:14
Speaker 7: makes me very, very proud to be from that area.
4:18
Speaker 6: Thank you.
4:18
Speaker 7: You know a lot of us don't get out. You know,
4:20
Speaker 7: it's just real, and you were I can, I can
4:24
Speaker 7: honestly say you were one of my idols that I
4:28
Speaker 7: strive to be when I when I did move to
4:30
Speaker 7: safety at Marshall. Now getting to the question, all's change,
4:35
Speaker 7: you know, it's the world's changing, balls change, the n
4:38
Speaker 7: C double as changing. It's you know, Carl, you probably
4:40
Speaker 7: know a little bit more. It's more NFL like man,
4:43
Speaker 7: I mean probably about thirty years old, thirty two. I
4:47
Speaker 7: think I had a chance to go to le Broncos
4:50
Speaker 7: with Mike Shanahan and I had to make a decision
4:52
Speaker 7: do I stay in college or do I go to
4:54
Speaker 7: the NFL? Right? And I had just got to a
4:57
Speaker 7: house state, just got back close to home, and decided
5:01
Speaker 7: to stay in college football because of the security you know,
5:04
Speaker 7: they were, which is removing every two years in the NFL. Man,
5:08
Speaker 7: you look at college football now, I mean, geez, it's
5:11
Speaker 7: the same thing we've we've kind of become the NFL
5:14
Speaker 7: a little bit. And now with the NLI and the portal,
5:20
Speaker 7: you know, that was I was kind of transitioning out
5:23
Speaker 7: of college football when all that is, but I still got,
5:26
Speaker 7: you know, a thousand friends coaching college ball, and the
5:30
Speaker 7: work hours are like the NFL. Uh My buddy here
5:34
Speaker 7: O'Dell Hagen's who is mister Florida State. I was driving
5:37
Speaker 7: to Tallahatsee and it was May. It was March, March.
5:42
Speaker 7: What is it? Thirty days in March? Right? And I said, del,
5:46
Speaker 7: I'm coming to Florida State, see my daughter. Let's go
5:48
Speaker 7: fishing or whatever. And he's like, Snyde's I've worked thirty
5:52
Speaker 7: one days. And I'm like, Dell, there's only thirty days
5:54
Speaker 7: in March. And he said, no, I've worked thirty one
5:57
Speaker 7: days with the portal, you know, and the recruiting. It
6:01
Speaker 7: never stops. It's ongoing, and at some point in time
6:06
Speaker 7: we're gonna have to come up with a commissioner. This
6:08
Speaker 7: is a snydersm now, thirty five years in the business.
6:12
Speaker 7: Somebody's gonna and I think it's probably gonna be coach
6:14
Speaker 7: saving to be honest with you, that would be the
6:16
Speaker 7: best to regulate this a little bit. You know, let's
6:21
Speaker 7: put some regulations on this.
6:23
Speaker 4: Uh.
6:23
Speaker 7: You know, the coaching moves all happening. My phone blows
6:27
Speaker 7: up every single day. I need to start getting a
6:29
Speaker 7: Finders seat. I mean I didn't need to get a
6:32
Speaker 7: Finders It's crazy.
6:35
Speaker 6: You know.
6:35
Speaker 7: Guys are moving and we got bowl games now. Teams
6:38
Speaker 7: are opting out of bowl games. They can't finish the
6:42
Speaker 7: season with their players. I talked to all of my
6:45
Speaker 7: buddies yesterday at Arizona State, and uh, the one thing
6:51
Speaker 7: that that their head coach has done is even if
6:54
Speaker 7: you're going into the portal, if you want to finish
6:57
Speaker 7: the season with this team, because this is the twenty
6:59
Speaker 7: five team, you can't finish the season and go to
7:02
Speaker 7: the bowl game. Then going to the porter. To me,
7:05
Speaker 7: that was a breath of fresh air to be honest
7:07
Speaker 7: with that. To listen to Kurt at Indiana, you know,
7:13
Speaker 7: you know, they they gave him an opportunity and he
7:16
Speaker 7: stuck with it and and that's loyalty to me. So
7:21
Speaker 7: those those are kind of some of my thoughts. Guys, right,
7:24
Speaker 7: wrong and different. I don't know, but I guess I'm
7:26
Speaker 7: getting older. I'm still a little old fashioned, if you
7:30
Speaker 7: know what I mean.
7:32
Speaker 8: And speaking of that coach, this is Hollis. You transitioned
7:35
Speaker 8: from a collegiate sport. You like Lisa read it, at
7:39
Speaker 8: the onset of the program, you had a ton of experience,
7:42
Speaker 8: particularly on the defensive side, and also being a head
7:44
Speaker 8: coach at the collegiate level. Recently we saw, you know,
7:50
Speaker 8: the last couple of days Philip rivers after not playing
7:53
Speaker 8: for five years, and the NFL is back, and currently
7:57
Speaker 8: you are a coach at the us Is it you
8:00
Speaker 8: SFL or u f L.
8:01
Speaker 7: I believe you well to the UFL. Now, I was
8:04
Speaker 7: in the USFL, then I went to the XFL and
8:08
Speaker 7: they merged to make the UFL. It's kind of like
8:11
Speaker 7: Senior's golf Tour. Yeah, it's kind of the seniors Tour, gotcha?
8:15
Speaker 6: Gotcha?
8:16
Speaker 8: So what so I guess my question is is that
8:20
Speaker 8: what do you think needs to happen in order to
8:23
Speaker 8: have a better development system outside of what we're currently
8:28
Speaker 8: seeing at the collegiate level, because and particularly as it
8:31
Speaker 8: relates to the quarterback position, because I mean my thought
8:34
Speaker 8: was like, man, they can't find anybody else. He was
8:36
Speaker 8: the best choice after not playing for five years. So
8:39
Speaker 8: what do you think needs to happen as far as
8:41
Speaker 8: development is concerned.
8:42
Speaker 7: Man, that's that's a good question. That's probably above my
8:45
Speaker 7: pay grade. I think that with the portal, and again
8:50
Speaker 7: this is just my opinion, kids jumping from school to
8:54
Speaker 7: school chasing money, right, it used to be chasing money.
8:58
Speaker 7: When you get to the NFL, the kids are chasing
9:00
Speaker 7: money now. And the development part of it, you know,
9:06
Speaker 7: kids aren't playing three sports anymore. Yeah, everybody's got everybody's
9:11
Speaker 7: got a specialty coach. You know, we're gonna work on
9:13
Speaker 7: and there's nothing wrong with that footwork drills, those kind
9:17
Speaker 7: of things. But but but I I think again, this
9:21
Speaker 7: is old school thinking, playing a lot of sports, doing
9:25
Speaker 7: a lot of different movements. You know, I'm my specialties
9:29
Speaker 7: linebacker and my best linebackers believing or not, we're swimmers.
9:34
Speaker 7: Can you believe that hockey players and swimmers were my
9:38
Speaker 7: all pro guys I coached? Wow? Yeah, yeah, that's real.
9:43
Speaker 7: You know, they work on it. You know this, and
9:45
Speaker 7: they're working on that, and you know, and all those
9:48
Speaker 7: are important. But I just think we're losing focus of
9:52
Speaker 7: being an athlete right, developing the total body. And I'm
9:56
Speaker 7: sure it goes into quarterback play as well. Kids aren't
10:01
Speaker 7: getting developed anymore. We're jumping from school to school getting
10:04
Speaker 7: now they are getting different systems. I think that probably helps,
10:07
Speaker 7: but you know, from a knowledge standpoint, but I don't
10:10
Speaker 7: know that people are getting developed like they used to
10:12
Speaker 7: get developed. And it's showing. You could see it in
10:15
Speaker 7: the NFL a little bit. I've got a bunch of
10:18
Speaker 7: buddies in the NFL and I've never coached in the NFL,
10:22
Speaker 7: and they're like snids. You'd be shocked. Shocked.
10:26
Speaker 8: Yeah, And and like I was a former collegiate quarterback.
10:28
Speaker 8: And one thing I've noticed just even watching the NFL,
10:32
Speaker 8: and you probably can appreciate this playing safeties. Quarterbacks don't
10:35
Speaker 8: throw the long ball as well as they used to,
10:38
Speaker 8: and even raile receivers they seem to have trouble tracking
10:43
Speaker 8: the ball, And I think that comes from what you
10:45
Speaker 8: just said as far as just maybe not being that athlete,
10:49
Speaker 8: not just just playing sports and and and being too
10:53
Speaker 8: focused on trying to be technically right instead of just
10:56
Speaker 8: being athletically loose and fluid.
11:00
Speaker 7: H And I think a little bit of the offenses too.
11:04
Speaker 7: If you look around the country, you know everybody's spreading
11:08
Speaker 7: it out, and you know they're they're spread the ball
11:12
Speaker 7: across the field, but not down the field as much.
11:15
Speaker 7: So again, I mean, if if and again I'm talking
11:19
Speaker 7: from not a lot of knowledge, but if that would
11:22
Speaker 7: be an issue with my team, my butt would be
11:24
Speaker 7: practicing D balls every day because I'm getting a ton
11:26
Speaker 7: of the other stuff every day in practice, right, But
11:30
Speaker 7: if I'm a kid, a player, or a quarterback, I'm
11:34
Speaker 7: going to work on those skills. And I think we've lost.
11:37
Speaker 4: Some of that and and two and to Hollis's point,
11:41
Speaker 4: and and kind of even where really where you went
11:43
Speaker 4: on that. To me, technique is is the most critical piece.
11:51
Speaker 4: You could be good or you could be average, but
11:54
Speaker 4: when you learn technique and how to do it, that
11:59
Speaker 4: ends up that can make you so much better. And
12:03
Speaker 4: so to the point of going from program to program, system,
12:07
Speaker 4: the system.
12:10
Speaker 6: It's going to be.
12:10
Speaker 4: Very hard to pick up a system if you're if
12:13
Speaker 4: you're jumping ship every every other year, going and learning
12:18
Speaker 4: something with whether it be a new coach and new coordinator,
12:21
Speaker 4: we're going to do a new system. To me, I
12:23
Speaker 4: just think that is that is detrimental to the guy
12:28
Speaker 4: who could do a system. And then Hollis comes in
12:31
Speaker 4: and puts in another system, and all of a sudden,
12:35
Speaker 4: my play doesn't show up anymore.
12:37
Speaker 7: Like I agree with Carl, that's why you're all pro.
12:41
Speaker 7: That's exactly what I'm serious. Please don't tell you that,
12:47
Speaker 7: all right, I go around and and even into the
12:51
Speaker 7: coach and then I'm not banging on the coaching at all.
12:53
Speaker 7: But they've come up and you've got some younger coaches,
12:58
Speaker 7: and and and it it bother. I don't hear coaching,
13:02
Speaker 7: you know, catch the ball? Well, hell, I mean teach
13:04
Speaker 7: them how to catch the ball right, get in a tackle,
13:08
Speaker 7: make make the tackle. What you're not coaching the guy,
13:10
Speaker 7: teach the guy how to make the tackle. I hear that.
13:13
Speaker 7: I hear that a lot coach?
13:14
Speaker 6: You you you you you are just thinking me up.
13:18
Speaker 6: I mean, because it's crazy to me.
13:23
Speaker 4: For somebody to say, you got to make that tackle,
13:27
Speaker 4: and you haven't really actually worked on me making an
13:31
Speaker 4: angle tackle, or you haven't helped me try to make
13:35
Speaker 4: a straight on tackle. There's how do how do I
13:39
Speaker 4: play the ball?
13:40
Speaker 6: You know?
13:40
Speaker 4: Like I mean, all of those kind of things, I
13:44
Speaker 4: think we've lost. And I think that also because we've
13:49
Speaker 4: lost it, it's created a situation with our young players
13:54
Speaker 4: not being able to utilize all of their skill set.
13:59
Speaker 4: And when you don't, for me, footwork, basketball was the
14:03
Speaker 4: best thing for me with footwork because people don't really
14:05
Speaker 4: guys don't go out and do a whole lot of
14:07
Speaker 4: footwork outside and working out and saying I'm doing my footwork.
14:12
Speaker 6: But in basketball it's natural.
14:14
Speaker 4: Right, So if you don't play basketball because you you're
14:17
Speaker 4: because football doesn't end, you're gonna lose that piece. You
14:22
Speaker 4: don't have to start, You don't have to be a starter,
14:24
Speaker 4: you don't have to be anything. But just being able
14:26
Speaker 4: to be out there working helps you, right, And I
14:31
Speaker 4: think I think that I think that that's gone now.
14:33
Speaker 4: I don't think parents realize that. I don't think coaches
14:35
Speaker 4: care about it anymore so, and so kids to me
14:39
Speaker 4: actually just aren't even.
14:41
Speaker 6: Aware of that.
14:43
Speaker 7: Well, I'll tell you. I tell you guys, because I'm
14:45
Speaker 7: out right now, and I sit here on Saturdays. I
14:48
Speaker 7: don't miss it on Sundays. I don't miss it on Tuesdays.
14:51
Speaker 7: But Saturdays, I sit here and I scream at the
14:53
Speaker 7: TV and I'm goinging, I'm getting back in. I'm gonna
14:57
Speaker 7: get back in this year because I know I can
15:00
Speaker 7: help somebody somewhere with what we're talking about. And I
15:04
Speaker 7: talked to some of my buddies that are out and are like,
15:08
Speaker 7: because I felt like I've put years back on my life.
15:10
Speaker 7: You know, I've been out for two years now, and
15:12
Speaker 7: I'm gonna get back in because I can help somebody
15:14
Speaker 7: I know I can't. And they're like, it' nice. You
15:16
Speaker 7: need to get back in, Okay.
15:19
Speaker 5: You know.
15:21
Speaker 7: Now again with with the way college ball is now,
15:25
Speaker 7: talking about college NFL, I talked to a guy the
15:28
Speaker 7: other day that they had we have nine full time
15:32
Speaker 7: assistant coaches in college football. Every assistant coach had an
15:36
Speaker 7: analyst who's allowed to coach on the field. Now, right,
15:40
Speaker 7: you don't have to you don't have to stay in
15:42
Speaker 7: the office and stay away from practice. All nine people
15:46
Speaker 7: have analyst. So now you've got two coaches. Then you
15:49
Speaker 7: get they had fourth position that had gas graduate assistant coaches.
15:55
Speaker 7: Now you've got three coaches on top of the support
15:58
Speaker 7: staff that each individual coach had to get the film ready,
16:04
Speaker 7: you know, do the visio, do the all the meeting stuff.
16:08
Speaker 7: It's amazing to me. And I'm sitting there going wow,
16:12
Speaker 7: is there too many too many hands in the in
16:14
Speaker 7: the pot? Could you imagine sitting in a staff room
16:17
Speaker 7: with forty seven people?
16:19
Speaker 6: Oh my gosh, no, I can't even. I can't even.
16:22
Speaker 6: I can't even imagine that, And you can't.
16:24
Speaker 4: It's not possible, is it that me and Hollis and
16:28
Speaker 4: Lisa can all see something every time the same exact.
16:31
Speaker 7: Way, right right. I'm with you. I'm with you. So
16:37
Speaker 7: I've come to the there's a few of my buddies
16:40
Speaker 7: that are doing it and their back in bile. They're
16:42
Speaker 7: getting their fixed, their helping kids, and they're helping the stabs.
16:49
Speaker 7: To have somebody old enough to stand up and go,
16:50
Speaker 7: you know what, this is the way he wants it.
16:52
Speaker 7: Everybody else, be quiet, just the way we're gonna do it. Now,
16:55
Speaker 7: let's coach it, you know. And and when I do
16:58
Speaker 7: get back in That's where I'm gonna bring to the table.
17:01
Speaker 7: I'm going to be that guy that's been a head coach,
17:03
Speaker 7: that's been a coordinator, It's been at the highest level
17:06
Speaker 7: in college athletics. You know, I know what the top
17:09
Speaker 7: of the mountain looks like. And then help maybe control
17:12
Speaker 7: that forty people, you know, in a staff room. I
17:16
Speaker 7: couldn't imagine having a staff room that big to hold
17:20
Speaker 7: that many people. Wow, those are my thoughts, guys. I
17:23
Speaker 7: mean not that I know what the heck I'm talking about,
17:25
Speaker 7: but there's something that does definitely need to be fixed
17:29
Speaker 7: in college football for sure.
17:31
Speaker 5: Speaking of fixing things in college football, you open the
17:34
Speaker 5: door for me, coach.
17:36
Speaker 6: This is Lisa.
17:38
Speaker 5: So we know every year when the college football playoffs
17:41
Speaker 5: roll around, there's going to be some type of controversy.
17:44
Speaker 5: You know, there are going to be teams that are in,
17:46
Speaker 5: teams that are out, and some people are going to
17:48
Speaker 5: be happy and some not so happy. You know, obviously,
17:51
Speaker 5: if you want to make everybody happy in college college athletics,
17:54
Speaker 5: sell ice cream, don't coach, right, you know that. So
17:57
Speaker 5: this year, the main controversy for twenty twenty centered on
18:01
Speaker 5: the selection committee's decision they snub Notre Dame basically for
18:05
Speaker 5: Miami despite ranking the Irish ahead of the Hurricanes for weeks. Right,
18:11
Speaker 5: So you've got that going on, and then when you
18:15
Speaker 5: look at Alabama's inclusion, you know they had an early
18:19
Speaker 5: season loss to FSU that was kind of overlooked, whereas
18:22
Speaker 5: Notre Dame's lost to Miami wasn't. What is your opinion
18:27
Speaker 5: on the way that and I know that, you know,
18:30
Speaker 5: like I said, no one's the whole crowd can never
18:33
Speaker 5: be happy. But the selection process in general, what is
18:36
Speaker 5: your thoughts about how they do that in this current
18:40
Speaker 5: college football playoff system?
18:42
Speaker 7: Wow, that's that's a rough one. I first, I would say,
18:45
Speaker 7: I'm glad I'm not on the committee exactly. You know,
18:48
Speaker 7: I worked for Mark d'antone and work with Mark D'Antonio
18:52
Speaker 7: at Ohio State. He's on the selection I would not
18:54
Speaker 7: want to be in that. No, that's a rough one.
18:57
Speaker 7: You know, do you do you leave a JMU out
19:00
Speaker 7: so you can take a Notre Dame and make it
19:02
Speaker 7: all about money in TV exposure and the things that
19:05
Speaker 7: run the country, or do you let like a James
19:09
Speaker 7: Madison in right?
19:11
Speaker 6: Mm hmm.
19:12
Speaker 7: That could maybe be a Sundarella kind of like basketball.
19:16
Speaker 7: I don't have the answer to that. I guess every
19:20
Speaker 7: year you'd have to change how many teams you'll let
19:22
Speaker 7: in at least I really don't.
19:23
Speaker 5: Have the answer to It's kind of a rhetorical question
19:26
Speaker 5: for sure, but I just wanted your opinion on it.
19:29
Speaker 5: I mean, you know, And so an expansion of the
19:30
Speaker 5: playoff maybe an answer, like you.
19:32
Speaker 7: Just said, maybe maybe maybe if you're gonna you know,
19:37
Speaker 7: if you want your cake and eat it too. And
19:39
Speaker 7: when I say that, I'm talking about like a brand
19:41
Speaker 7: Notre Dame money, maybe exposure, and you want to let
19:46
Speaker 7: the James Madison in. Who's earned it? Who deserves it? Sure,
19:49
Speaker 7: based on the rules that's been put out, maybe maybe
19:52
Speaker 7: expanding it is the answer.
19:54
Speaker 6: Yeah. My my concern with how this like the.
20:03
Speaker 4: Like the bowl games used to be like something that
20:06
Speaker 4: was exciting and you you kind of paid attention to
20:10
Speaker 4: who whoo who got in the bowl, like you wanted
20:14
Speaker 4: your team to get into the bowl, right and whatever
20:17
Speaker 4: that bowl is? And now you you you you got
20:22
Speaker 4: a little bit of playoff situation kind of going why
20:28
Speaker 4: can't it? Is there a possibility of just going to
20:32
Speaker 4: a straight playoffs at each level and you take your
20:37
Speaker 4: top how many ever teams and just play.
20:42
Speaker 7: There's something to that too. I mean that there's so
20:45
Speaker 7: much tradition in the bowl games. They've been around just
20:47
Speaker 7: about as long as football has, you know, and the
20:51
Speaker 7: pageantry and the excitement and all those things that we
20:54
Speaker 7: all come to grow and love are kind of going
20:57
Speaker 7: to the wayside. I mean, how many teams do we have?
21:00
Speaker 6: Doubt?
21:01
Speaker 7: You know, you don't hear of that much. I think
21:03
Speaker 7: we had six or seven teams, not even.
21:05
Speaker 6: Gonna go to think it was ten, yeah, ten ten.
21:09
Speaker 7: Coaching changes and you know, we got the portals, so
21:13
Speaker 7: we're not getting an extra practice with our young people
21:16
Speaker 7: because they might not be on our team anyway. You know,
21:20
Speaker 7: it's kind of lost its luster a little bit, which
21:24
Speaker 7: is sad because what a great experience for young people
21:27
Speaker 7: bowl games are. They're incredible. Most incredible experience I've had
21:31
Speaker 7: in coaching is those Bowl games. And the better your record,
21:35
Speaker 7: the better the bowl games, the better the bowl game,
21:37
Speaker 7: the better the the prizes and the gifts you got
21:41
Speaker 7: when you got off the plane, and uh, just the
21:44
Speaker 7: pageantry of it all.
21:46
Speaker 8: So coach, you've actually had it from both angles. So
21:49
Speaker 8: You've been to bowl games as a coach, and you
21:52
Speaker 8: also went to the playoffs at the one double a
21:54
Speaker 8: what used to be the one double a FCS level
21:57
Speaker 8: as a player and a coach. So comparing it to like,
22:01
Speaker 8: how like what was the experience like on on on
22:04
Speaker 8: the playoff in in the.
22:05
Speaker 7: Bowl and we well, the playoffs was exciting. It was Wow,
22:11
Speaker 7: that's a rough one. I enjoyed the one double eight
22:14
Speaker 7: days of the bowl games because you you win and
22:16
Speaker 7: you keep playing. Yeah, you know, the Bowl game was
22:19
Speaker 7: more development of young people, the younger you know, your
22:23
Speaker 7: team had a lot of scrimmages with the young players.
22:27
Speaker 7: You got to mostly go to a warm destination. Yeah
22:31
Speaker 7: that in the one double wait days, I mean, g
22:34
Speaker 7: we was in Montana, we were, we was all over
22:37
Speaker 7: the place.
22:38
Speaker 8: I just remember watching like because you coasted not only
22:42
Speaker 8: played at Marshall, but you coastedt young toown States where
22:44
Speaker 8: you guys had just one of the most phenomenal runs
22:47
Speaker 8: that there was. I think you went won three straight championships,
22:51
Speaker 8: went to four straight FCS championship games. So I remember
22:57
Speaker 8: just watching the intensity again be cold weather, hot weather,
23:01
Speaker 8: but just the intensity of those games. So what was
23:04
Speaker 8: the experience like and again, a lot of those games
23:07
Speaker 8: you coached the young Town stayed with Jim Trussel. You
23:10
Speaker 8: were playing against your former team Marshall.
23:12
Speaker 6: So what that.
23:14
Speaker 7: Was crazy? The first year, the first year at Youngstown,
23:21
Speaker 7: we played Mama Mater Marshall, and the seniors on that
23:24
Speaker 7: team were freshman when I was playing.
23:26
Speaker 6: Wow.
23:27
Speaker 7: Yeah, And my guy kind of what was his name, Brettnstler,
23:32
Speaker 7: brad Nessler, We was at the banquet and he said,
23:35
Speaker 7: Michael Payton drops back to past. Oh no, it's intercepted
23:38
Speaker 7: by Mark Snyder.
23:39
Speaker 6: Michael and I had.
23:44
Speaker 7: To I split underneath my table, you know. Uh So
23:48
Speaker 7: a lot of those guys on that team were freshmen
23:50
Speaker 7: when I played, So it was pretty It was pretty cool.
23:55
Speaker 7: And I'll tell you guys this, this is a story
23:57
Speaker 7: I have never You guys will appreciate this. I I
24:00
Speaker 7: haven't shared this much, but when the Jones was over,
24:04
Speaker 7: we played Marshall in ninety three, I believe, and pregame.
24:10
Speaker 7: I'm standing at midfield with Jim Donnan and I'm what
24:13
Speaker 7: thirty twenty eight years old, twenty nine years old, and
24:17
Speaker 7: he put his arm around me, and the fans were
24:19
Speaker 7: starting to fill into the stadium and he said, I
24:24
Speaker 7: want you to look around here, son, someday this may
24:26
Speaker 7: all be yours.
24:27
Speaker 6: Wow, that's great.
24:30
Speaker 7: Crazy, And it was, Yeah, so that's crazy.
24:34
Speaker 8: Going from that, and then, like I said, playing against
24:37
Speaker 8: Marshall and everything like that in those championship games and
24:40
Speaker 8: that rivalry that was Youngtown State and Marshall back in
24:43
Speaker 8: the days. And then transitioning to be the head coach
24:47
Speaker 8: at your alma mater, the school you grew up, you know,
24:49
Speaker 8: watching it. How was that coaching in Huntington?
24:53
Speaker 7: It was cool. It was really good. It was a
24:54
Speaker 7: great experience, you know. Jim Trussell asked me because it
24:59
Speaker 7: was kind of you know, I had nobody to really
25:03
Speaker 7: uh ask because when I got hired. Remember the time
25:09
Speaker 7: that I got hired. I got hired after spring ball.
25:11
Speaker 7: There was one spring practice left. Yeah, yeah, and I'm
25:17
Speaker 7: I'm you know, trust is like you sure you want
25:19
Speaker 7: to do this, Sure you want to do this? You
25:22
Speaker 7: know the timings late. You got one spring practice left
25:26
Speaker 7: to meet your team or even see them. Uh, you know,
25:29
Speaker 7: you got to hire staff. And at the time I
25:33
Speaker 7: was pretty hot. I mean I had a lot of
25:35
Speaker 7: job offers. To be honest with you, and we were
25:38
Speaker 7: we were in Texas Week.
25:40
Speaker 5: Uh.
25:40
Speaker 7: In spring ball, we always had like a Michigan Week
25:43
Speaker 7: at Texas Week, whoever the big teams were. We were
25:46
Speaker 7: in Texas Week, and uh, he asked me one last time,
25:49
Speaker 7: he said, sure, you want to do this, and I
25:52
Speaker 7: said I do. And uh, so I called down. I said, y'all,
25:56
Speaker 7: don't have practice. I'm driving down from Columbus. I got
25:59
Speaker 7: this see one practice, a shells practice, and then uh,
26:04
Speaker 7: the spring game and I was out in the parking
26:06
Speaker 7: lot the whole spring game, you know, Glad Hannon and
26:10
Speaker 7: some babies and all that kind of stuff in my team,
26:14
Speaker 7: you know. So it was a bit of a challenge
26:17
Speaker 7: for a year and a half, it was. It was
26:19
Speaker 7: a bit of a challenge getting the people in there.
26:22
Speaker 7: I wanted, you know, when I when I was hired,
26:25
Speaker 7: I was giving some instruction, some direction as to what
26:29
Speaker 7: they wanted done. And I agreed with it that that
26:33
Speaker 7: fit into my philosophy. So we did that, and uh,
26:38
Speaker 7: it was good. It was really good. I mean, how
26:39
Speaker 7: many people can say they coached was the head coach
26:41
Speaker 7: that they're on my minor not very many.
26:43
Speaker 4: Yes, that's awesome, Yeah, that that's that's that's pretty special.
26:47
Speaker 4: I'm gonna go, I'm gonna go way off the chart
26:50
Speaker 4: here for a second. And and I don't know why,
26:52
Speaker 4: but this as as you were talking, this popped into
26:55
Speaker 4: my head. I'm gonna go. I can't remember being at
27:00
Speaker 4: Marshall for you know, pretty much. I mean, I was
27:03
Speaker 4: there for my four years, and I knew of the
27:07
Speaker 4: plane crash. I knew of it, but it did not,
27:13
Speaker 4: it did not really, I don't know, grab me to
27:17
Speaker 4: the degree of when I went to go see the movie,
27:24
Speaker 4: I'm wondering, did you have any idea, any concept, or
27:29
Speaker 4: any any anything about that particular situation at Marshall that
27:36
Speaker 4: would make you say, Hey, I'm you know, I'm proud
27:39
Speaker 4: to because, like now, my proudest moment about being at
27:43
Speaker 4: Marshall is that I was part of the rebuild, right,
27:47
Speaker 4: you know, and while we didn't win games, we were
27:50
Speaker 4: playing and if we weren't playing, I mean, because the
27:53
Speaker 4: concept really was to get rid of the program period.
27:56
Speaker 4: So the fact of just being able to be out
27:59
Speaker 4: there representing the school that to me was a great thing.
28:06
Speaker 4: As looking back at it, and I was wondering, like,
28:08
Speaker 4: at that point in time, how did you how do
28:12
Speaker 4: you how did it make you feel? Did you see
28:15
Speaker 4: the movie? How did that make you feel? And you know,
28:18
Speaker 4: and does that draw you into making Marshall one of
28:22
Speaker 4: the more special places that you've ever coached.
28:25
Speaker 7: Well, I don't know how long this show is, but
28:27
Speaker 7: I'll tell you this because you just struck a bunch
28:30
Speaker 7: of nerves with me. When I kid. You know, my
28:33
Speaker 7: family's from Huntington. So when I was a kid when
28:35
Speaker 7: a plane crash, I remember my dad taking me and
28:38
Speaker 7: my brother over there. And I was little. It was
28:42
Speaker 7: nineteen seventy, so I was a little, but I kind
28:44
Speaker 7: of remember that. And then I would say this, Carl,
28:48
Speaker 7: if they didn't keep playing football, right, then I wouldn't
28:51
Speaker 7: have got a chance to see Carl Lee play, which
28:54
Speaker 7: inspired me and probably other people right to to do
29:00
Speaker 7: what we've done, if that makes sense. And then my
29:02
Speaker 7: senior year, I actually went to school with Red Dawff's daughter, right,
29:07
Speaker 7: and Red didn't come around much, and me and my
29:10
Speaker 7: college roomate Tony Peterson become friends with him. You know,
29:14
Speaker 7: Red actually used to give us beer. I probably shouldn't
29:17
Speaker 7: say that. We would go to Red's house and we
29:20
Speaker 7: were playing Weaver State at Fairfield right, and the starters
29:26
Speaker 7: got pulled out of the game before we went and
29:28
Speaker 7: played Appy State in the semi finals, and so we
29:32
Speaker 7: Marshall knew that there would be no more home games
29:35
Speaker 7: at Fairfield the rest of that year because we were
29:39
Speaker 7: getting beat Weaver. Then we go play Appy, then we
29:42
Speaker 7: go play Northeast Louisiana. So in the fourth quarter, all
29:46
Speaker 7: the starters come out. We talked Red into coming to
29:50
Speaker 7: the game. We talked Lee Moon into getting in. The
29:53
Speaker 7: sideline passed and they were doing the wave Carl around
29:58
Speaker 7: Fairfield a way right. I don't know. I know when
30:02
Speaker 7: I played there, and I never saw.
30:04
Speaker 6: That we didn't have anything to do the way for.
30:10
Speaker 7: And I remember looking at Red and he was crying. Right.
30:16
Speaker 7: So then when I came back to Marshall, Uh, one
30:20
Speaker 7: of my my things was I wanted new turf. That
30:23
Speaker 7: was one of my I don't want to say the bands,
30:25
Speaker 7: but I said, I want new turf. And we hired
30:28
Speaker 7: Red to put the put the turf in his construction company. Boom.
30:33
Speaker 7: Then here comes the movie and Uh, I become really
30:37
Speaker 7: close with Red, so I got guys, I got to
30:39
Speaker 7: hang out with McConaughey.
30:40
Speaker 5: I still talk to McConaughey, that was such a special time.
30:45
Speaker 7: Two of my daughters are in the movie. Oh yeah,
30:50
Speaker 7: I hung out with McConaughey. I hung out with with McGee.
30:53
Speaker 7: I could write a book on a bunch of stuff.
30:58
Speaker 7: I mean, I hung out with Matthew Proud believe. We
31:00
Speaker 7: lifted together. We ran together at lunch. I let him
31:05
Speaker 7: call plays at practice. I had him in the locker
31:09
Speaker 7: room before the U c F game. I probably shouldn't
31:12
Speaker 7: tell this story. I let him talk to the team.
31:16
Speaker 7: They flew in. He messed with McGee, the director, and
31:21
Speaker 7: McGee was scared to death to fly and Matthew told
31:23
Speaker 7: him they were going down, you know, and he had
31:28
Speaker 7: a fit, I guess, and they had to put him
31:30
Speaker 7: to sleep for the rest of the flight. They met
31:33
Speaker 7: us on sixty four, a route sixty four. Matthew jumped
31:35
Speaker 7: up on the plane. He was going to film Pools
31:37
Speaker 7: Gold with Godie Hans's daughter. He had all his facial
31:43
Speaker 7: hair and I'm like, matt what, what what's all over
31:46
Speaker 7: your faces? Like I go to Australia after this game,
31:49
Speaker 7: start filming this movie in fools Gold. So anyway, I
31:53
Speaker 7: let him in the locker room and at the end
31:56
Speaker 7: of his talk before we took the field, he said, uh,
32:02
Speaker 7: we are the hell he was talking about none of
32:08
Speaker 7: my players, and I went Marshall, Marshall and I said,
32:16
Speaker 7: I said, Matthew, do it again. And then he did
32:18
Speaker 7: it again, and a couple of players said it, and
32:20
Speaker 7: then he did it again. And then at the end
32:23
Speaker 7: it was like pandemonium. Everybody was saying it, you know, and.
32:27
Speaker 5: Pretty cool stories, you guys were the rebirth of we
32:30
Speaker 5: Are Marshall chant then basically, yeah, tell that.
32:34
Speaker 7: I hadn't heard that for a long Yeah long.
32:37
Speaker 5: I mean, that's that's what they do now. I mean,
32:39
Speaker 5: that's our cheer pretty much.
32:41
Speaker 7: And I know, I know. But in the locker room
32:45
Speaker 7: he did that to the kids and not one kid.
32:48
Speaker 7: What the hell he was? Oh my gosh, it was
32:51
Speaker 7: It was kind of it was a little embarrassing, to
32:53
Speaker 7: be honest with you.
32:55
Speaker 6: What a great story.
32:56
Speaker 7: Yeah, there's some there's some really really cool stories. But yeah,
32:59
Speaker 7: we still we still exchanged Christmas cards and the whole deal.
33:04
Speaker 7: And getting back to Red, so his bodyguard who just
33:08
Speaker 7: passed away him been read became very very very very
33:12
Speaker 7: good friends him and Big John from Zachary Louisiana became
33:18
Speaker 7: very good friends, and the four of us spend a
33:22
Speaker 7: lot of time together over those four or five months.
33:25
Speaker 7: That's a long answers, Carl to your to your question,
33:30
Speaker 7: I'm very every time I see we are Marshall last story.
33:35
Speaker 7: I got one more story for you. We're in Atlanta
33:38
Speaker 7: with my daughter's her piece right, her piece in the movie,
33:43
Speaker 7: and McGee, the director knew I had the headset on right.
33:46
Speaker 7: So we're behind the wall. He says, action, and they
33:51
Speaker 7: turn off the TV and pan down the bar and
33:53
Speaker 7: there's my daughter and she shakes her head, puts her
33:56
Speaker 7: purse on her shoulder, and walks out the door. That's
33:59
Speaker 7: her scene now. And mcg goes, who knows I got
34:02
Speaker 7: the headset on? Guys, takes the headset off and walks
34:08
Speaker 7: around the corner into the diner and he sits down
34:13
Speaker 7: next to my daughter and he goes, no, Chelsea, I
34:16
Speaker 7: need you to pretend like your dad just lost a
34:18
Speaker 7: football game. You ought to be good at that by now.
34:24
Speaker 7: Al mcg came the headset and said.
34:29
Speaker 9: ROA, oh wow, oh yeah, yeah, that's a.
34:35
Speaker 4: Good one, hey, coach. We got to take a break,
34:37
Speaker 4: but if you want to stay with us. We're more
34:39
Speaker 4: than welcome. We probably got about maybe another twenty minutes
34:42
Speaker 4: after we come out of the break, if.
34:43
Speaker 6: It's up to you.
34:45
Speaker 7: I'm good, guys. I love talking to you. I love
34:46
Speaker 7: talking to people at home.
34:48
Speaker 6: Okay, sounds good. Well we're gonna take a quick break
34:50
Speaker 6: and we'll be right back.
34:52
Speaker 10: Let's face it, bad things happen to good people seriously

35:49
Speaker 3: Now back into the conversation.
35:51
Speaker 6: All right, we're back and go to you. You're still
35:54
Speaker 6: here with us, yes, sir?
35:57
Speaker 4: All right, So I'm wondering you. I think you've kind
36:03
Speaker 4: of flirted around with, uh something coming up You're getting
36:08
Speaker 4: back into coaching. Is that something that you could give
36:13
Speaker 4: us a little bit more on or you or would
36:16
Speaker 4: you rather keep it to yourself?
36:18
Speaker 7: Yeah, we'll just keep We'll just keeps okay, Okay, Uh,
36:24
Speaker 7: there's some things in the hopper here and we'll see
36:26
Speaker 7: how how things go.
36:28
Speaker 4: Okay, I'm gonna I'm I'm gonna ask this a just
36:31
Speaker 4: a simple kind of question. I'm going to go back
36:33
Speaker 4: kind of to almost to like how we kind of
36:36
Speaker 4: opened the show a little bit.
36:40
Speaker 6: In high school in aile.
36:45
Speaker 4: Is happening here in West Virginia, Okay, And and and
36:48
Speaker 4: and it just it just got started. And and I've
36:53
Speaker 4: I've actually already received like a call to.
36:58
Speaker 6: To donate.
37:00
Speaker 4: Money to do that, and I and me personally, I'm
37:05
Speaker 4: not interested in that for the simple fact that I
37:10
Speaker 4: played had I had to wait till I got to
37:13
Speaker 4: the NFL to get a dollar. And I just don't.
37:17
Speaker 4: I just don't buy into the whole nil system. And
37:22
Speaker 4: I get I get to college making money, but I
37:25
Speaker 4: think that there's a there's a systematical way that they
37:27
Speaker 4: could do that than just throwing all these millions, millions
37:31
Speaker 4: of dollars away and now here we are in high school.
37:35
Speaker 6: I just think it's terrible. So where where are you?
37:38
Speaker 6: Where are you with with all of that?
37:41
Speaker 7: I struggle with that big time. I think that young
37:43
Speaker 7: people are young people for a reason. I mean, I
37:47
Speaker 7: truly believe that your brain, a young man's brain is
37:50
Speaker 7: not fully developed to about twenty four to twenty five,
37:53
Speaker 7: twenty six years old, where they're a grown man. They
37:57
Speaker 7: look like grown men at nineteen twenty twenty one, but
37:59
Speaker 7: they're I couldn't imagine fifteen, sixteen, seventeen year old kids
38:06
Speaker 7: getting out on money. I just too many people, too many,
38:10
Speaker 7: too many people would get involved, you know, handlers, and
38:16
Speaker 7: you know he next thing we know, high school kids
38:18
Speaker 7: are going to start having agents.
38:19
Speaker 6: You know, I think they do probably do.
38:22
Speaker 7: Wow. Wow. I just think that's I think that's way
38:26
Speaker 7: too young. Uh uh. You know, in this society, we
38:31
Speaker 7: got to learn to earn things right and and like
38:35
Speaker 7: you said, Carl, I mean you got your first dollar
38:36
Speaker 7: when you got to the NFL. I agree with you.
38:39
Speaker 7: I think college kids should get something. There's no doubt,
38:42
Speaker 7: no doubt about it. I was I was at an
38:44
Speaker 7: m with Manziel. I mean that school made a lot
38:46
Speaker 7: of money off Johnny, they did and other people. Not
38:49
Speaker 7: just right, but but to the point of where it's
38:52
Speaker 7: gotten today going back to college. That's why I think
38:56
Speaker 7: we need a coach saving or somebody of that staff
39:00
Speaker 7: to just put some regulations in place, funneling it down
39:03
Speaker 7: to the high school level. What's going to end up
39:06
Speaker 7: happening is colleges are going to start helping that and
39:12
Speaker 7: now that kid's got to come to that college, right.
39:15
Speaker 6: I didn't think that way.
39:17
Speaker 7: Come on, every you know, everybody's looking for a way
39:20
Speaker 7: to get an edge now, and especially in college football.
39:24
Speaker 7: You know it's it's in allies is legal now, it's
39:26
Speaker 7: been going on. It's just legal. But it will funnel
39:30
Speaker 7: down to the high school you know, even even the
39:34
Speaker 7: herschel Walkers of the world. And because I guess his
39:37
Speaker 7: story is out there, so I can I can use
39:39
Speaker 7: him as an example. Eric Dickerson. You know there's there's
39:43
Speaker 7: stories there that that was happening in their senior year
39:47
Speaker 7: coming out. Could you imagine a sophomore or a junior,
39:54
Speaker 7: how's the high school coach even going to coach? That's
39:56
Speaker 7: just beyond me.
39:58
Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean that's there's I mean, that's a I mean,
40:01
Speaker 4: that's gonna be a huge challenge because now not only
40:04
Speaker 4: are you trying to figure out your system, what do
40:07
Speaker 4: you want to do, what's what's your practice schedule? Who's
40:11
Speaker 4: injured bypassing all of those kind of things, it's how
40:15
Speaker 4: am I gonna get this money?
40:17
Speaker 6: Where am I going to get this money from to
40:18
Speaker 6: pay my quarterback?
40:20
Speaker 7: Mm hmmm mm hmm.
40:22
Speaker 9: Yeah.
40:23
Speaker 4: And you've got and and and it's really a it's
40:25
Speaker 4: it's a forced situation to where you have to have
40:29
Speaker 4: these particular people attached to your school mm hmm in
40:34
Speaker 4: order for you to to be successful. You're not because
40:37
Speaker 4: you're just not gonna be successful if you don't have
40:40
Speaker 4: ni o money to pay people because they're they're gonna lead,
40:43
Speaker 4: kids are gonna lead.
40:45
Speaker 7: Mm hmmm, mm hmmm. And the people that will win
40:48
Speaker 7: will be the people that can can still build a team,
40:53
Speaker 7: you know, t e a m with all that going on,
40:56
Speaker 7: just in the playoffs, we're gonna watch it. I mean,
40:58
Speaker 7: we're gonna see it them to life. Whoever wins this thing.
41:02
Speaker 7: They're all dealing with an online money, but they've they've
41:06
Speaker 7: they've handled it in a way that the team is
41:10
Speaker 7: still first. You know, it's not about an individual. And
41:13
Speaker 7: that's who's gonna win this whole thing. At the end
41:15
Speaker 7: of the day, whoever it is, and whoever Kirby or
41:18
Speaker 7: House State or Indiana, whoever it is. You know, whoever
41:22
Speaker 7: can have the whoever has the best team is gonna win.
41:26
Speaker 6: And I'm not sure.
41:27
Speaker 4: I'm not sure if if I win, I don't know
41:33
Speaker 4: if that helps me or hurts me. Because some of
41:35
Speaker 4: the players that are that that will all of a
41:37
Speaker 4: sudden want.
41:39
Speaker 6: Or deserve in I own money.
41:42
Speaker 4: They're leaving. They're gonna leave if I can't come up
41:45
Speaker 4: with the money. So I so repeating is almost impossible.
41:50
Speaker 7: It's gonna it's gonna be interesting to see it. And
41:52
Speaker 7: if there is such a thing as repeats.
41:55
Speaker 8: And speaking of the college football playoffs, and just like
41:57
Speaker 8: just touching briefly on the NII, you know.
42:00
Speaker 6: What's good for the game, It's good for the goose.
42:02
Speaker 8: I think that you know, and again, you're a coach,
42:05
Speaker 8: but I think coaches have shown that, you know, it's
42:08
Speaker 8: all about money for them too, So this sort of
42:11
Speaker 8: filtered down to the players. So it's got to be
42:13
Speaker 8: loyal to on both ends or integrity or however you
42:16
Speaker 8: would frame it. But going to the college football playoffs,
42:21
Speaker 8: there's a lot of controversy around it. But who do
42:23
Speaker 8: you have? What's your pick? I'm going And again I
42:27
Speaker 8: didn't notice to the till today, but the head football
42:30
Speaker 8: coach at Indiana, Signelly is a West Virginian. He is
42:34
Speaker 8: from He's from Montgomery, He's from Morgantown. From Morgantown, his
42:39
Speaker 8: father was the coach at WVU back in the seventies.
42:42
Speaker 6: He was a quarterback at WVU. God and just imagine him.
42:46
Speaker 8: I mean, if we could have you know, but you
42:48
Speaker 8: know whatever, But he's done such a tremendous job at
42:52
Speaker 8: at Indiana.
42:54
Speaker 6: So so who do you got, coach?
42:57
Speaker 7: Man? I ro uh in my heart of Hearts. I
43:04
Speaker 7: think I think the team that's playing the most complimentary
43:07
Speaker 7: football right now that I've seen is Georgia. But I
43:13
Speaker 7: think that Ohio State has a lot of talent. I
43:17
Speaker 7: think the loss to Indiana is going to wake them up. Okay,
43:22
Speaker 7: wake that sleeping giant up because they got a ton
43:24
Speaker 7: of talent, a ton of talent. But again, you know,
43:27
Speaker 7: every any given Saturday, you can beat shoot Indiana, show
43:30
Speaker 7: that you know.
43:31
Speaker 5: Uh.
43:32
Speaker 7: But but watching Georgia just they're not as good as
43:36
Speaker 7: they've been in the past, but they're playing better as
43:38
Speaker 7: a team. I mean with the defense isn't playing well,
43:41
Speaker 7: the offense is playing well.
43:42
Speaker 8: I'm SEC coach. I don't want to let's Jake, let's
43:48
Speaker 8: go jam you or Indiana Let's go.
43:53
Speaker 5: Yeah. I was just gonna ask you about that, coach.
43:55
Speaker 5: But you know is do you think there's SEC bias?
43:58
Speaker 5: I mean the way that Alabama got in and Notre
44:02
Speaker 5: Dame got left out, and like I said, looking at
44:05
Speaker 5: those earlier losses. I mean, I know the SEC is
44:08
Speaker 5: one of the best conferences in the country. We all
44:12
Speaker 5: know that, But do you feel like they get some
44:14
Speaker 5: some you know, favorable calls when it comes to the playoffs.
44:20
Speaker 7: Yeah. Maybe Again, I'm not in that room. I don't
44:23
Speaker 7: I don't know exactly what. I hope I get to
44:26
Speaker 7: hear here in a year. I'm going to ask what
44:30
Speaker 7: went on in that meeting and I'll be able to
44:31
Speaker 7: get an answer. But yeah, for right now, I mean,
44:35
Speaker 7: they've got people in that room that's from all over
44:37
Speaker 7: all conferences, and they all believe in their conference. Yeah,
44:41
Speaker 7: you know, so I don't have an answer to that.
44:45
Speaker 7: I really don't.
44:46
Speaker 4: Does does the draw of the team? You know, like
44:52
Speaker 4: when you say Ohio State, I mean that's huge, right Indiana?
44:59
Speaker 4: Make Okay, it's Indiana, but it's not Ohio State. Not
45:03
Speaker 4: when you start talking about football, I see it the
45:08
Speaker 4: whole nil issue and what I think is a problem,
45:12
Speaker 4: and even being who's who are you gonna put on TV?
45:18
Speaker 4: Who's gonna be making all this money? Where's the money
45:21
Speaker 4: coming from?
45:22
Speaker 6: To?
45:23
Speaker 4: I think what happens if you let this go too far?
45:26
Speaker 4: And I'm curious to see if you agree with me.
45:29
Speaker 4: We're gonna get the top and the bottom.
45:33
Speaker 6: We're gonna get the teams who have money behind them.
45:38
Speaker 4: They're gonna turn into the top teams, and then on
45:41
Speaker 4: the bottom are going to be the teams that can't
45:45
Speaker 4: get money, and all they've got are the guys who
45:48
Speaker 4: can't get on other teams that can't leave their program
45:51
Speaker 4: and go to another team. And I don't see why
45:54
Speaker 4: we're not seeing this that you can't keep this going
45:58
Speaker 4: because all of your top players each and every year
46:02
Speaker 4: are going to go somewhere else. And the team that
46:06
Speaker 4: doesn't have any il who lost a great player in
46:09
Speaker 4: their quarterback, maybe they're gonna have to get another quarterback
46:13
Speaker 4: who's not gonna probably be that good, and they can't
46:16
Speaker 4: afford to keep him even if he plays out, it
46:18
Speaker 4: plays out and.
46:19
Speaker 2: It plays great consistency, consistency, you can't have it.
46:23
Speaker 6: You're not gonna be able to have any kind of consistency.
46:26
Speaker 7: I agree with you one hundred percent. And I started
46:29
Speaker 7: this whole conversation by saying, there has to be some
46:32
Speaker 7: We need to get a commissioner and a body below him,
46:36
Speaker 7: right under him that are having these same conversations we're
46:40
Speaker 7: having right now. I mean, it's there. I think everybody
46:43
Speaker 7: thinks it's real. Everybody knows that it's real, just nothing
46:47
Speaker 7: has been done yet because it's a little bit like
46:50
Speaker 7: a wild while lest right now, I think there'll be
46:52
Speaker 7: some regulation come here in a year or two. I
46:55
Speaker 7: really do. Uh if what we are all talking about
46:59
Speaker 7: discussing right here comes to fruition that you have the
47:03
Speaker 7: superpowers and then you have everybody else, you know, and
47:07
Speaker 7: I think I don't think. I know some guys are
47:10
Speaker 7: jumping to other jobs because they're gonna have unlimited resources.
47:14
Speaker 7: You know, you guys have left a pretty good job
47:18
Speaker 7: to take maybe what looks lateral to some people, But
47:23
Speaker 7: if you look at the monies that that particular institution has,
47:29
Speaker 7: it's not even close, you know, and you can google
47:32
Speaker 7: that there are how much endowment money they have? And
47:36
Speaker 7: what's the ad willing to give you? What's the president
47:39
Speaker 7: willing to give you monetarily to buy your football team?
47:44
Speaker 4: Yeah, Like, I don't know how. I don't know how
47:46
Speaker 4: you can get a contract that is like this out
47:54
Speaker 4: of this world compared to any other coach, you know,
47:58
Speaker 4: like Kipping, you know, like I mean, but I.
48:03
Speaker 8: Also say this, I think that just because you have
48:06
Speaker 8: the money doesn't guarantee success.
48:09
Speaker 4: Right.
48:09
Speaker 8: We've seen what's Signetti, We seen what Jammy you, we
48:12
Speaker 8: see what Tulane. Hell, even what Duke did. Duke won
48:15
Speaker 8: the ACC championships. So just because you have the money,
48:20
Speaker 8: because we seen like there is still a part of
48:22
Speaker 8: football where you have to jail, you have to work
48:25
Speaker 8: as a team, you have to have continuity among your
48:28
Speaker 8: players and your staff. That still is value. And I
48:30
Speaker 8: think what we're going to see over the long haul,
48:33
Speaker 8: we're going to see sort of that bell curve where
48:35
Speaker 8: we're gonna have this money and it's gonna be crazy,
48:38
Speaker 8: and then it's going to come down to the other
48:39
Speaker 8: side where people, organizations, eighties presidents, they're going to realize, hey,
48:44
Speaker 8: we just can't throw money at this problem.
48:47
Speaker 6: Troy Aikman, he made a comment the other day.
48:50
Speaker 8: He was saying he wrote a check and they asked
48:52
Speaker 8: him to write a check for one of them nil
48:54
Speaker 8: deals for a quarterback, and the quarterback transferred. So I
48:56
Speaker 8: think you're gonna have not only on that end, you're
48:59
Speaker 8: gonna have donut fatigue. And you know, some companies aren't
49:03
Speaker 8: going to get the ROI when it comes to, you know,
49:06
Speaker 8: those endorsement deals that they think they're going to get,
49:08
Speaker 8: particularly when you have players who have such fluidity of movement.
49:12
Speaker 8: So I think we're just at a we're almost I
49:14
Speaker 8: think at the tip of point, and I think it'll
49:16
Speaker 8: come down to the other side. Well, we'll sort of
49:18
Speaker 8: get back to reality.
49:20
Speaker 7: Yeah, I agree with you, And I think that the
49:22
Speaker 7: quicker that we get a body involved of all the
49:27
Speaker 7: things that we're kind of talking about, that'll happen sooner
49:31
Speaker 7: than later. And what scares me to that is what
49:34
Speaker 7: you guys brought up. I mean, we can't let it
49:36
Speaker 7: get to the high school level. My goodness. I mean,
49:38
Speaker 7: it's never gonna stop.
49:39
Speaker 6: You know, it's already there. I mean, it's already there.
49:44
Speaker 5: And wow, kind of implementing things in West Virginia without
49:48
Speaker 5: really knowing what the ramifications will be. You know, it's
49:52
Speaker 5: it's very general right now, but it's here. It's here.
49:55
Speaker 4: And the fear of that is what you hear of
49:59
Speaker 4: inn Il Money. He's in college and and all of that.
50:03
Speaker 4: You're thinking right out of the shoot. If I'm a
50:06
Speaker 4: high school kid and I'm a really I'm the best
50:09
Speaker 4: guy on my team and and and we've got nil,
50:13
Speaker 4: what am I asking for or what am I thinking
50:15
Speaker 4: I'm gonna get? You know, if I mean, if I'd
50:19
Speaker 4: have got a thousand dollars, if I'd have got five
50:21
Speaker 4: hundred dollars.
50:22
Speaker 6: I would have been doing flips.
50:26
Speaker 4: They're talking millions now they're gonna be asking for millions. Yeah,
50:32
Speaker 4: and I just I just don't think.
50:34
Speaker 6: I just I just don't know that.
50:35
Speaker 4: And and I hope you guys are right that it
50:38
Speaker 4: will it will all come to a head. My problem
50:42
Speaker 4: is how far and how many athletes are we going
50:46
Speaker 4: to have to go through before we get it?
50:51
Speaker 7: Mm hmmm. I concur with you. I'll tell you guys this.
50:56
Speaker 7: When I was at Florida State, if if I heard
51:00
Speaker 7: one more time, coach, I'm trying to get that bag.
51:04
Speaker 7: Had I never ever hear that in my meeting room again?
51:08
Speaker 7: I said, I lost my stuff during games? You know
51:10
Speaker 7: they put on a backpack after an interception. That's what
51:13
Speaker 7: you're supposed to do. Yeah, that stuff drove me crazy.
51:18
Speaker 8: Guys, Hey, speaking of interceptions, you uh, I think during
51:22
Speaker 8: that championship season of a championship run, you led Marshall
51:28
Speaker 8: with ten picks that season. I think that record still
51:32
Speaker 8: stands for a Martiall record and for a conference record.
51:36
Speaker 6: In I correct, Yeah, I beat out.
51:39
Speaker 7: I was second in the country. And who beat me out?
51:42
Speaker 6: Who?
51:42
Speaker 7: Superman? Hell? Dean Kane?
51:45
Speaker 8: He had where did he play at though?
51:52
Speaker 7: Where did he play? He played that Division III?
51:54
Speaker 6: Right?
51:55
Speaker 7: No, no, he played the IVY she played it was it? Yell?
52:00
Speaker 8: Okay, that's some interesting trivia.
52:04
Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, yes, Superman, Superman got me.
52:07
Speaker 5: I'm going to give you a hypothetical question here, coach, So,
52:10
Speaker 5: since we're playing games, so, so when you were you
52:14
Speaker 5: were with coach Tressell at Ohio State in two thousand
52:17
Speaker 5: and one, right, and you were the defensive coordinator, and
52:19
Speaker 5: you guys had a forteen eleven record, which is that's
52:22
Speaker 5: that's pretty respectable. What would you have done in that
52:25
Speaker 5: day in time if you had had access to nil
52:27
Speaker 5: like Ohio State does today? I mean, can you imagine,
52:31
Speaker 5: like what what kind of things could you have accomplished
52:34
Speaker 5: with that type of revenue.
52:36
Speaker 6: To pay d man more?
52:39
Speaker 8: Shout out to Darius Scott Capitol high.
52:43
Speaker 7: Right, God, that's my god. Would have got some money,
52:49
Speaker 7: for sure. We gave decent money.
52:51
Speaker 10: Yeah.
52:51
Speaker 7: You know, one thing, the one thing that coach trust
52:54
Speaker 7: was great about even if we had been in the
52:57
Speaker 7: NLI era, uh, he would he would have managed that.
53:01
Speaker 7: He would have done his best to manage it and
53:03
Speaker 7: still keep the team concept. And I again, I look
53:07
Speaker 7: at Georgia, and I think Kirby, with all the money
53:11
Speaker 7: they have, all the money they are paying, he still
53:14
Speaker 7: got his kids playing another They don't look like they're
53:18
Speaker 7: playing as individuals. You know, they're playing complimentary football. I think.
53:24
Speaker 7: I think Ryan Day's done a great job at Ohiose
53:26
Speaker 7: State with that too as well.
53:28
Speaker 6: And one one story about d Man.
53:30
Speaker 8: I remember him coming back home for briefly in the summer,
53:34
Speaker 8: and everybody knows Darian Scott. He was, like I said,
53:37
Speaker 8: capitol football legend here. He's a great running back, great
53:40
Speaker 8: basketball player and a linebacker. And I remember asking him
53:44
Speaker 8: that summer. I was like, well, why did you move
53:46
Speaker 8: the defensive line? You know what I mean? And it's
53:48
Speaker 8: in his comment was like I was trying to get
53:51
Speaker 8: on the field faster. So just talking to like if
53:54
Speaker 8: we got parents listening or players listening, and because we
53:58
Speaker 8: could talk all the nil stuf if you want, but
54:00
Speaker 8: if you're not producing on the field, none of that's
54:03
Speaker 8: not it's not even going to come to it's not
54:05
Speaker 8: gonna mean nothing. So talking to parents, talking to maybe
54:08
Speaker 8: players who listen, and what would you tell them about
54:11
Speaker 8: like those decisions maybe you got to switch positions playing
54:14
Speaker 8: other sports, different things of that nature.
54:16
Speaker 7: Well, selflessness, I mean, that's that's a lost art now nowadays.
54:22
Speaker 7: A little bit you know you want to be you
54:24
Speaker 7: know you don't want to be selfish. Whatever helps the
54:26
Speaker 7: team and helps you in in return, no doubt. And
54:30
Speaker 7: like we talked about earlier, I mean when I go
54:33
Speaker 7: out recruiting, I love it when a guy tells me
54:35
Speaker 7: he plays hoops or runs track or plays baseball. Parents
54:42
Speaker 7: hear that I fell into that trap. I didn't. I
54:46
Speaker 7: didn't play baseball my senior year in high school to
54:50
Speaker 7: run track to get faster for football. And I'm not
54:53
Speaker 7: so sure my best sport wasn't baseball. You maybe I
54:57
Speaker 7: could have been Carl Lee of baseball, you know what
54:58
Speaker 7: I mean, Because I wasn't good to football wise to
55:01
Speaker 7: get where I wanted to go. But maybe baseball, you
55:03
Speaker 7: know what I mean. So I think when I go out,
55:06
Speaker 7: I love it when the coach tells me this kid
55:08
Speaker 7: does this, this, this, this, and this. I tell you
55:12
Speaker 7: something else that we that we look for too. If
55:14
Speaker 7: for young folks listening, I went always went to the
55:18
Speaker 7: cafeteria workers, the janitors. I want to know about that kid. Wow,
55:22
Speaker 7: nobody was looking Yep, it's her at the highest level.
55:26
Speaker 7: Now we're talking Ohio state right now, because we had
55:29
Speaker 7: to pick the litter across the country, and I wanted
55:32
Speaker 7: to know what the gender had to say about him,
55:34
Speaker 7: the ladies in the cook line when he'd come got
55:37
Speaker 7: his lunch, teachers, We we go that deep with it.
55:42
Speaker 7: You know, in the NFL they go to the to
55:44
Speaker 7: the police reports and things of that nature. But but
55:47
Speaker 7: even those NFL scouts, I mean, it's amazing to watch
55:50
Speaker 7: him walk around a facility and ask.
55:52
Speaker 9: About a kid, wow, and and football related and and
55:57
Speaker 9: and parents need to understand that because when that scout
56:01
Speaker 9: comes into the high school, say a colleague scout comes
56:05
Speaker 9: into the high school to see your kid, it's not
56:10
Speaker 9: it's as much as football or basketball or whatever the
56:13
Speaker 9: sport that they're playing.
56:15
Speaker 4: You may think it's all about that, but that scouts
56:18
Speaker 4: trying to get information. The question he's asking people is
56:22
Speaker 4: not about what's happening on the field.
56:25
Speaker 7: Now we say that on film, We say that on film.
56:28
Speaker 7: We don't need that. And exactly I would ask. I
56:32
Speaker 7: would ask about the parents too, I sure would. I
56:35
Speaker 7: wanted to know what was coming into my room. You
56:38
Speaker 7: know what kind of kid. How was he raised? What
56:41
Speaker 7: am I bringing into my thirteen or fourteen guys as
56:45
Speaker 7: a position coach or my forty five guys as a
56:47
Speaker 7: coordinator or one hundred and five guys as a head coach?
56:51
Speaker 5: So important? You don't want to destroy your locker room chemistry, you.
56:55
Speaker 7: Know, absolutely, yep, no doubt about it, No doubt about it.
56:58
Speaker 7: That's and again I think that's the team that's going
56:59
Speaker 7: to win this whole thing. We'll know here in a
57:02
Speaker 7: few weeks who held it together the best and who
57:05
Speaker 7: managed all the things that we're talking about the best.
57:09
Speaker 6: Mm hm.
57:10
Speaker 4: That's you know, I I I really When I when
57:14
Speaker 4: I think about looking at at that.
57:18
Speaker 6: Piece of football, the.
57:20
Speaker 11: The parents side, the the off the field stuff, I
57:26
Speaker 11: think it's a it's a it seems like that's a challenge,
57:31
Speaker 11: but it should be just normal, right Like you know,
57:34
Speaker 11: if if your goal, my goal was to play NFL football,
57:39
Speaker 11: I didn't have any other interest, so there wasn't no
57:42
Speaker 11: reason for me to try to be I didn't need
57:44
Speaker 11: to be cool in school. I didn't need to be
57:47
Speaker 11: tough in the in the alleys. I didn't need to
57:50
Speaker 11: be none of that. I just wanted to be a
57:52
Speaker 11: football player and play in the NFL.
57:55
Speaker 7: Mm hmm.
57:56
Speaker 4: And if and if to me, I feel like there's
57:59
Speaker 4: so much think there's so many different types of things
58:02
Speaker 4: that kids think they want to be and or they
58:04
Speaker 4: they find something that they want to be, but there's
58:07
Speaker 4: so many other things that pull them.
58:08
Speaker 6: Off of that track.
58:11
Speaker 8: Mm hmm.
58:12
Speaker 4: And because they're off there half the time they're off
58:15
Speaker 4: that track, they're not putting enough time, not enough study
58:20
Speaker 4: into what it is they want to be. And you
58:23
Speaker 4: and if you want to be something, I mean to me,
58:25
Speaker 4: I think you have to be all the time locked in.
58:30
Speaker 6: You know you can't. You can't.
58:31
Speaker 4: You can't say okay, well I'll I'll just do this
58:36
Speaker 4: one time.
58:36
Speaker 6: No, you're probably not gonna do it this one time,
58:39
Speaker 6: right right?
58:40
Speaker 7: Can we call it up with it?
58:42
Speaker 6: Yeah?
58:45
Speaker 10: Uh?
58:46
Speaker 7: You know one last story I tell you guys, since
58:48
Speaker 7: we're talking about d Scott. Uh you know Aaron Dobson
58:52
Speaker 7: from right there in Charlis. Yeah, going back to the
58:56
Speaker 7: all around sports. You know, he he had nobody fruiting him.
59:00
Speaker 7: I was actually watching my daughter's cheer at Cabul Midland,
59:04
Speaker 7: and this kid took over the basketball game right in
59:09
Speaker 7: the second half, and I said, who is that kid? Right?
59:14
Speaker 7: And they said, his parents are sitting right down there.
59:17
Speaker 7: Because I always sat on the visitor side just so
59:21
Speaker 7: I could, you know, be incognito and join my daughters.
59:24
Speaker 7: Went down and I sat with his parents and asking
59:29
Speaker 7: if he played football, and his dad said, hey, yay,
59:31
Speaker 7: he plays wide receiver. And I said what school? And
59:33
Speaker 7: I said, I'll be in there this week. Did he
59:36
Speaker 7: catch any balls? And very few balls did he catch
59:40
Speaker 7: in high school? Right? But I saw his demeanor on
59:44
Speaker 7: the basketball corps another sport. I got to meet his parents.
59:48
Speaker 6: Great.
59:48
Speaker 7: Great, Now you have a Super Bowl ring, you know,
59:55
Speaker 7: and that's you know, that's another story getting back to
59:59
Speaker 7: being a enty sport guy. You know, especially in the
1:00:03
Speaker 7: area when in our area there there's not a lot
1:00:06
Speaker 7: of college coaches that come through there, you know. Yeah,
1:00:10
Speaker 7: so you've got to stand out somehow someway, Well.
1:00:15
Speaker 6: Coach, we're gonna we're gonna let you go and we're
1:00:17
Speaker 6: gonna get out of here. Man.
1:00:19
Speaker 4: I really really appreciated. We got a lot of good information.
1:00:22
Speaker 4: And I hope a lot of the folks who are listening,
1:00:24
Speaker 4: they they will they will hear a lot of the
1:00:26
Speaker 4: things that you said and take take heed of it.
1:00:29
Speaker 5: Thank you so much, coach.
1:00:31
Speaker 7: Thank you guys. It's so good to be talking to
1:00:32
Speaker 7: folks at home. Stay warm up there.
1:00:38
Speaker 5: Happy holidays.
1:00:39
Speaker 7: Happy holidays to you guys.
1:00:41
Speaker 6: All right.
1:00:43
Speaker 4: Now, that's a guest right there. I know you know
1:00:47
Speaker 4: what I'm saying that you're welcome. Thank you.
1:00:52
Speaker 6: No, I'm thanking you sincerely that that was really good.
1:00:56
Speaker 5: It's a nice human. I mean, he's just a genuine person,
1:01:00
Speaker 5: I believe.
1:01:01
Speaker 6: And you know, and Holl's fun.
1:01:02
Speaker 4: It's funny to me because listening to him, he doesn't
1:01:05
Speaker 4: really come off like like that hard nosed coach. But
1:01:08
Speaker 4: I'm going to make the case that I think he
1:01:11
Speaker 4: is pretty demanding in what he wants.
1:01:14
Speaker 7: Yeah.
1:01:14
Speaker 8: I mean, if you look at his resume, anybody Mark Snyder,
1:01:18
Speaker 8: former head coach of Marshall, He's been Ohio State to everywhere.
1:01:22
Speaker 8: He has a professional football coaching experience, so he's been
1:01:24
Speaker 8: around the block. So I think he's one of those
1:01:26
Speaker 8: guys who you know, not only from a player standpoint,
1:01:29
Speaker 8: but from a collegiate standpoint and even maybe you know
1:01:32
Speaker 8: hourly has an administrator as well. He has a well
1:01:34
Speaker 8: rounded perspective on football and kind of where it needs
1:01:37
Speaker 8: to go and what you need to do in order
1:01:38
Speaker 8: to accomplish your goal.
1:01:39
Speaker 4: Right, So, if you're listening, if you listen to this show,
1:01:42
Speaker 4: he's your He's who you should be listening to because
1:01:46
Speaker 4: I think he's telling you everything that you need to
1:01:48
Speaker 4: know about your kid, trying to trying to find a
1:01:50
Speaker 4: way in the sports.
1:01:51
Speaker 5: He's well rounded.
1:01:52
Speaker 6: Yep.
1:01:53
Speaker 4: All right, well, ladies and gentlemen, we appreciate you listen,
1:01:55
Speaker 4: and we will be back again next week.
