Transcript
- 0:03Marvin: Hey folks, it's Marvin Cash, the host of The Articulate Flower,
- 0:06Marvin: back with another On the Water with Dustin White. Dustin, how are you?
- 0:12Dustin: Marvin, I'm doing well. How are you, my friend?
- 0:14Marvin: I'm trying to stay out of trouble and you're trying to smooth it over. Yeah.
- 0:19Marvin: Yeah, what folks don't know is you were out pulling for carp and you fell off the platform.
- 0:25Marvin: And I'll let you take it from there about phone troubles at 18 inches of water
- 0:28Marvin: and all that kind of good stuff.
- 0:31Dustin: Yeah had a had a client uh on
- 0:34Dustin: the bow another that was uh under my
- 0:37Dustin: pulling platform and the one that under the platform got really excited when
- 0:40Dustin: i caught on a fish and uh jumped up uh boat to kind of shimmied and uh yeah
- 0:48Dustin: took a tumble off the the platform and uh phone was in my pocket it and fell
- 0:54Dustin: in some pretty shallow water on it.
- 0:56Dustin: So the iPhone, the former iPhone 13 is no more.
- 1:01Dustin: And so I had to do the obligatory upgrade, even though I wasn't expecting it.
- 1:08Dustin: But we're all good. So a little bit of a pinch back, but everything's all good.
- 1:15Marvin: Yeah, I never knew that an iPhone could break your fall like that.
- 1:18Dustin: Yeah, it really, really helps.
- 1:20Marvin: So you're going with the iPhone probably, what, 15 Pro or Pro Max?
- 1:26Dustin: Yeah, yeah. I've heard they have a little more cushion for them coming off that polling platform.
- 1:31Dustin: So I decided to do the upgrade.
- 1:35Marvin: Yeah, well, they have an airbag in them now. It's kind of cool.
- 1:37Dustin: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:41Marvin: So as we get ready to kind of cruise into the 4th of July weekend,
- 1:44Marvin: you know, it's kind of funny. We're down here in the southeast.
- 1:46Marvin: I was telling you it's roasting. Like we've had, we've had a cool day today,
- 1:49Marvin: but it's going to bounce right back up to the upper nineties and you're sitting
- 1:52Marvin: there highs in the upper seventies, low eighties. It's got to be pretty sweet.
- 1:56Marvin: What are you seeing out on the water?
- 1:58Dustin: Yeah, it's been perfect temps. We're just so fortunate. It's such a pleasant time of year.
- 2:06Dustin: In terms of bug life, you know, we've had our typical DMDs, caddis,
- 2:14Dustin: yellow sallies, kind of across the board.
- 2:18Dustin: Um our our golden stones on
- 2:21Dustin: the mile are starting to pop so we're really really excited about
- 2:24Dustin: that um it might even be you know
- 2:27Dustin: popping by the time uh this this is published uh and podcast is out there for
- 2:32Dustin: everybody so it's it's a any day now the golden stones on the mile are going
- 2:37Dustin: to be popping so um probably some of the most you know exciting surf section
- 2:43Dustin: that that folks uh can expect
- 2:45Dustin: to see uh in this region of the country but um
- 2:48Dustin: you know other than that you know um pmds like
- 2:51Dustin: i said caddis uh tends to be the more
- 2:54Dustin: favorable takes throughout the day uh later in
- 2:58Dustin: the afternoon you know salaries are coming off and and folks can uh expect to
- 3:01Dustin: see those uh being taken as well um but uh all in all pretty good on all fronts
- 3:08Dustin: uh bighorn's pretty mossy um so you know just be aware of that you're gonna
- 3:13Dustin: be casting lanes probably wouldn't nymph it probably would do.
- 3:17Dustin: Some sort of dry dropper um you know
- 3:20Dustin: first success there um they just dropped the flows of the reef on us so that's
- 3:26Dustin: gonna you know consolidate this fish a little more central in the water column
- 3:31Dustin: um but uh in in the later afternoon they're moving over into the shallow flats
- 3:37Dustin: near the banks to to take tries.
- 3:39Dustin: And like I said, on the mile front, it's any day now, as we're speaking,
- 3:45Dustin: the golden stones are going to be popping.
- 3:48Marvin: Yeah. And so how long does that hatch chain really last?
- 3:51Dustin: Yeah, I mean, it's about a four or five day hatch itself.
- 3:56Dustin: But there's a latency period of another four or five days where the fish are
- 4:00Dustin: willing to take flies on the surface.
- 4:03Dustin: So, you know, it's kind of like a nine to 10 day window, I typically tell folks.
- 4:09Dustin: And so, literally, it's any day now. We've got, you know, it's big tear in our system.
- 4:15Dustin: So, you know, we've got them out, the adults are out, they're flat around.
- 4:18Dustin: Around, just starting to.
- 4:21Dustin: So probably in the next couple of days, we're going to see those fish start to key in on them.
- 4:26Dustin: And then you've got another, you know, eight, nine, 10 days after that first
- 4:33Dustin: sort of emergence starts to occur where those fish will take a golden on the surface.
- 4:39Marvin: Very, very cool. And, you know, folks, we love questions on the Articulate Fly.
- 4:43Marvin: You can email them to us or DM us on social media. And one thing we've added
- 4:46Marvin: recently, if you go to the podcast link on the website, down in the lower right-hand
- 4:51Marvin: corner, there's a little microphone. You can actually record your question.
- 4:53Marvin: And if we use that question, we'll actually play it on the episode. So kind of a cool thing.
- 4:57Marvin: And if we use your question, I'll send you some articulate fly swag and then
- 5:01Marvin: bring you a drawing for a half a day of fishing with Dustin.
- 5:04Marvin: And Dustin, as we always do, we've got to give
- 5:07Marvin: a shout-out to a local bar-slash-restaurant-slash-drinking-astalagement.
- 5:12Marvin: What's on the list this time around?
- 5:14Dustin: Yeah i gotta go to the the uh the local
- 5:18Dustin: haunt of the silver fox silver fox is
- 5:21Dustin: a historical uh steakhouse and bar here in casper wyoming um it's fantastic
- 5:29Dustin: for us because it's you know mac dab right in the middle of our commute out
- 5:35Dustin: from in town casper out to uh the crazy rainbow to your lodge, out to the Gray Reef.
- 5:40Dustin: You pass it on your trek out to the water.
- 5:44Dustin: And so it's such a great place.
- 5:48Dustin: Fantastic steaks. Chiller bartender service. Everyone there is so fantastic.
- 5:54Dustin: And the legendary bacon knots that still haunt my dreams, Marvin, are pretty fantastic.
- 6:05Dustin: The Silver Fox is is such a cool spot and whenever we have guests in town and
- 6:12Dustin: they ask, hey, where should I go to eat tonight?
- 6:16Dustin: That's always one of the first recommendations we give to folks.
- 6:19Marvin: Yeah, sounds pretty neat. And so you gotta tell me a little bit more about the
- 6:22Marvin: bacon knots, what makes them so special?
- 6:25Dustin: There's probably some illicit substance wrapped in them, but they literally break bacon.
- 6:33Dustin: And it's more like a dessert appetizer than it would be anything else.
- 6:40Dustin: There's kind of a sweet, maple-y glaze on them. And yeah, just pretty addicting.
- 6:46Dustin: So you can't stop with one. They're pretty fantastic.
- 6:51Marvin: And you're saying the secret sauce is like ayahuasca or mescaline or something like that?
- 6:55Dustin: Something like that. PCP, who knows? It's Angel Dust.
- 6:59Dustin: I don't know, but whatever it is, it's fantastic.
- 7:04Marvin: Yeah, that's pretty old school there. I haven't heard anyone talk about Angel
- 7:07Marvin: Dust in a while. Have you been watching like Old Hill Street Blues reruns or something?
- 7:11Dustin: No no no
- 7:14Dustin: uh but uh something's going on
- 7:17Dustin: with these these bacon knots and they're they uh they definitely
- 7:20Dustin: lend that way so um but yeah um anytime
- 7:23Dustin: anyone's here in town uh they're right off cy avenue and uh silver fox the silver
- 7:29Dustin: fox will take a real good care of you and yeah just a great local font and uh
- 7:35Dustin: killer steaks killer walleye you know we got like a little uh crusted and walleye that they serve.
- 7:40Dustin: So everything on the menu is incredible.
- 7:43Dustin: The bar staff's great. We're really grateful to have them in town.
- 7:48Marvin: Yeah, so did they put the walleye on the menu to pay homage to your Midwest heritage?
- 7:55Dustin: I like to think so. I'm not sure if that's the actual case, but in my head,
- 8:02Dustin: that's definitely what I like to believe.
- 8:05Marvin: Yeah, with the progies on the side, right?
- 8:08Dustin: Exactly. A little sauerkraut. Yeah. Yeah. Perfect.
- 8:11Marvin: So you're telling me you're kind of in that sweet groove where the great thing
- 8:14Marvin: about you is, you know, you're guiding so many repeat clients.
- 8:17Marvin: It's like kind of old friends week for the next few weeks. You want to let folks,
- 8:20Marvin: you know, know where you hang your hat, shop hours, how to book you and all that kind of good stuff.
- 8:26Dustin: Yeah, absolutely. Yep. I probably guide for the ugly bug and crazy rainbow.
