- 0:00Speaker 1: Today you are in for a real treat as the
- 0:02Speaker 1: nation and as the world continues to be ravaged by
- 0:05Speaker 1: COVID nineteen. I have a dear friend for whom the
- 0:07Speaker 1: global crisis became a personal crisis. This past March, I
- 0:12Speaker 1: got worried that my friend Stuart Hall had tested positive
- 0:15Speaker 1: for COVID nineteen. And when I checked in with Stuart,
- 0:18Speaker 1: he was quarantining at home and his words were, this
- 0:21Speaker 1: thing is no joke, and he was correct. His situation
- 0:26Speaker 1: continued to deteriorate. Two weeks later, his wife Kelly, rushed
- 0:29Speaker 1: him to the hospital where he was admitted and well.
- 0:33Speaker 1: In a minute, I'll let Stuart and Kelly tell you
- 0:36Speaker 1: what happened next. I've known Stuart and Kelly for many years.
- 0:39Speaker 1: They have three grown kids. We've spoken at camps together,
- 0:42Speaker 1: We've actually exercised and run together. We co authored two
- 0:45Speaker 1: books together. Stuart is a phenomenal communicator. Together, he and
- 0:49Speaker 1: Kelly have literally impacted thousands of lives and influenced hundreds
- 0:53Speaker 1: of adults and students to step across the line of faith.
- 0:57Speaker 1: There are church leaders all over the country who point
- 0:59Speaker 1: back to a single conversation with Stewart is the catalyst
- 1:03Speaker 1: for why they entered full time ministry. So with the
- 1:06Speaker 1: uptick and the COVID cases and so much mystery surrounding
- 1:09Speaker 1: this dangerous virus, I thought it would be great for
- 1:12Speaker 1: you to.
- 1:12Speaker 2: Hear their story from them. So here we go. So,
- 1:58Speaker 2: Stuart Kelly, thank you for doing this.
- 2:00Speaker 1: And I'm sure you've told your story to so many
- 2:04Speaker 1: people privately, so thank you for sharing it with the
- 2:07Speaker 1: whole world. And I think the best way to do
- 2:09Speaker 1: this is just to start at the beginning and give
- 2:11Speaker 1: everybody kind of the timeline, because this journey begins late
- 2:15Speaker 1: March into early May, and so let's start with this.
- 2:18Speaker 1: You started having symptoms, and like everybody yelse, you know,
- 2:22Speaker 1: every all through pollen season, we're all like, oh, no,
- 2:24Speaker 1: is this that?
- 2:26Speaker 2: So what were your symptoms? And just take it from.
- 2:28Speaker 3: There right, Well, one interesting thing is this when you
- 2:32Speaker 3: look at the spectrum of the virus. My symptoms happened
- 2:37Speaker 3: relatively early on comparatively to where we are today. Kelly
- 2:42Speaker 3: and I try to exercise, and we had just gone
- 2:44Speaker 3: on a five mile walk and I.
- 2:47Speaker 4: Just started feeling weird.
- 2:49Speaker 3: I coughed a lot during that walk, and I thought
- 2:54Speaker 3: there's one hill that's really steep, and I thought that
- 2:57Speaker 3: was the reason why. But I got home that night
- 2:59Speaker 3: and just could and kick it and progressively started feeling
- 3:03Speaker 3: like I had the flu. The more we heard and
- 3:08Speaker 3: read about the virus, the more concerned we became. So
- 3:11Speaker 3: four days later, on March twenty ninth, we went to
- 3:13Speaker 3: the emergency room.
- 3:15Speaker 2: At an ear at a hospital and r.
- 3:17Speaker 4: At a hospital.
- 3:18Speaker 3: And even at that time, I think this is lost
- 3:21Speaker 3: on the general public that hasn't had a personal.
- 3:25Speaker 4: Experience with this.
- 3:26Speaker 3: Even then, Kelly pulled up to the emergency room, I
- 3:29Speaker 3: got out of the vehicle, and she had to go
- 3:32Speaker 3: and park in the parking lot. She couldn't come in
- 3:34Speaker 3: and wait and wait. They didn't have enough tests at
- 3:37Speaker 3: the time. I didn't have enough symptoms for them to
- 3:41Speaker 3: go ahead and admit me. They took an X ray
- 3:43Speaker 3: of my chest. Their words exactly, we're ninety seven percent
- 3:48Speaker 3: sure you have the virus, but because you don't have
- 3:50Speaker 3: enough symptoms, because we don't have enough tests, we're going
- 3:53Speaker 3: to send you home to self quarantine. So I went home,
- 3:56Speaker 3: stayed in my bedroom the rest of the time until
- 4:00Speaker 3: we had to go back, and I progressively got worse.
- 4:03Speaker 3: My fever would spike to one oh four. Kelly could
- 4:07Speaker 3: use tylan on and get it down to like one
- 4:09Speaker 3: oh one, but it never got back to normal. In
- 4:12Speaker 3: between all that, on April the third, our general practitioner
- 4:18Speaker 3: contacted an infectious disease doctor who prescribed me hydroxychloroquin, which
- 4:23Speaker 3: is now a controversial drug and there are varying opinions.
- 4:27Speaker 3: What we know happened to me is that I didn't
- 4:29Speaker 3: sleep for seventy two hours after I started taking that drug.
- 4:32Speaker 2: And so you started taking it how long after you
- 4:34Speaker 2: had symptoms?
- 4:36Speaker 3: I took it started taking on April the third, OK,
- 4:39Speaker 3: so that was about ten days and my heart was racing.
- 4:45Speaker 4: I couldn't sleep. I would go from a chair.
- 4:48Speaker 3: To the bed, to a chair to the bed, and
- 4:50Speaker 3: it just it was pretty scary. My fever went away,
- 4:54Speaker 3: but my heart was just doing something weird. Until April
- 4:59Speaker 3: to six was a really bad day, to the degree
- 5:01Speaker 3: that that night our son stayed in the bedroom with
- 5:04Speaker 3: us and Kelly, to her credit, I'm just stubborn.
- 5:09Speaker 4: I didn't. We had seen so many stories.
- 5:11Speaker 3: We knew that if we go back to the hospital,
- 5:14Speaker 3: they're going to intubate me, They're going to put me
- 5:15Speaker 3: on a ventilator, and we're going to be separated. And I,
- 5:19Speaker 3: being hard headed and stubborn, was just thinking, Okay, let
- 5:22Speaker 3: this medicine run its course in my body and I'll
- 5:24Speaker 3: be okay.
- 5:25Speaker 2: But at this point, you hadn't been you hadn't tested
- 5:27Speaker 2: positive yet.
- 5:28Speaker 3: I hadn't even taken a test right, So early morning
- 5:32Speaker 3: April the seventh, I finally looked at her and said,
- 5:35Speaker 3: we need to go to the doctor, and we need
- 5:37Speaker 3: to go to the hospital. And so she and our
- 5:39Speaker 3: son Grant rushed me to the hospital. It was this
- 5:42Speaker 3: precarious on the way that she almost stopped at a
- 5:45Speaker 3: fire station because I was I just couldn't breathe.
- 5:49Speaker 2: Wow, And I back up one second.
- 5:52Speaker 1: So you didn't sleep for seventy to seventy two hours.
- 5:56Speaker 1: And so, Kelly, you have to be thinking through all this,
- 5:59Speaker 1: and my I mean, you're taking care of your husband,
- 6:01Speaker 1: but you're also thinking if if he's COVID nineteen positive,
- 6:04Speaker 1: perhaps so were you all the kids.
- 6:06Speaker 2: So what I think we.
- 6:07Speaker 5: All knew we had had experienced the virus. I had
- 6:14Speaker 5: a fever probably a day before him, but mine only lasted.
- 6:21Speaker 6: It was very minimal, and it only.
- 6:24Speaker 5: Lasted for a couple of days, and then my children,
- 6:27Speaker 5: our two older children, probably like towards that first weekend,
- 6:31Speaker 5: so like maybe Thursday, Friday, Saturday, they were kind of
- 6:35Speaker 5: just down, didn't feel good, had had a little low
- 6:38Speaker 5: grade fever. But then we were all fine, wow, and nothing,
- 6:43Speaker 5: no any type of symptoms, none.
- 6:47Speaker 2: Of us had, so you didn't even suspect.
- 6:49Speaker 5: I mean, obviously you're suspecting because you're just going everything
- 6:54Speaker 5: you do at that point and you feel in your body,
- 6:55Speaker 5: you're wondering, yeah, this is the virus that makes me.
- 7:00Speaker 6: I think everybody in the world is feeling that way.
- 7:02Speaker 3: I think it was March the eleventh, like the National
- 7:05Speaker 3: Basketball Association had canceled their season, so that was starting
- 7:08Speaker 3: to happen as well.
- 7:10Speaker 5: We had brought to two of our both of our
- 7:11Speaker 5: daughters had to come home from college, so I mean
- 7:14Speaker 5: it was, you know, the progression was just happening. And
- 7:16Speaker 5: then it's just like all of a sudden, these symptoms
- 7:18Speaker 5: and you're going, no, this can't.
- 7:20Speaker 6: Be How are we getting this virus? Where did it
- 7:22Speaker 6: come from? Who were we been around?
- 7:24Speaker 5: And it was just crazy to think that we just
- 7:28Speaker 5: couldn't imagine. And then the fact that we live in
- 7:31Speaker 5: such a small community. We didn't want to tell people
- 7:34Speaker 5: because it's it feels as if you have leprosy, and
- 7:38Speaker 5: we didn't want to freak people out because there's so
- 7:40Speaker 5: much it's still so much unknown. But we didn't want
- 7:43Speaker 5: to just create such chaos, so we didn't tell anyone.
- 7:47Speaker 5: We told our family, and we told a couple of
- 7:51Speaker 5: friends because at that point we couldn't go to the
- 7:53Speaker 5: grocery store any longer.
- 7:55Speaker 2: None of you could. No, you didn't feel like we.
- 7:57Speaker 5: Were all quarantined in the house. So we did ask
- 8:01Speaker 5: a couple of families to help.
- 8:04Speaker 6: Could you bring us this? Could you bring us this?
- 8:06Speaker 5: But I asked them specifically, please don't tell, because I
- 8:10Speaker 5: didn't want our community to know just because of chaos.
- 8:13Speaker 6: I didn't want it to create that much drama.
- 8:16Speaker 1: At the beginning, I mentioned that y'all have three adult kids,
- 8:18Speaker 1: so catch us up age of your kids, and then
- 8:20Speaker 1: we'll jump back into the story.
- 8:21Speaker 2: So Grant Grant.
- 8:23Speaker 3: Is twenty five, just returned from a two and a
- 8:26Speaker 3: half year sent with a Peace Corps in Central America.
- 8:29Speaker 3: Our oldest daughter will be twenty three this month. Chandler
- 8:33Speaker 3: and she graduated virtually from college during the pandemic. And
- 8:38Speaker 3: then our youngest Cameron is twenty and is already.
- 8:44Speaker 4: Back at school.
- 8:44Speaker 3: She's a soccer player, so they're already training again, which
- 8:48Speaker 3: was also a bit of anxiety sending her back.
- 8:52Speaker 1: So at this point, all five of you were at home.
- 8:55Speaker 1: Everybody's had mild symptoms. You're wondering, but nobody gets tested.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Then Dad gets serious system, they prescribe you the drug.
- 9:03Speaker 2: You still have it been tested.
- 9:05Speaker 1: You don't sleep for seventy two hours, And at some
- 9:07Speaker 1: point through all of that, all of us are, you know,
- 9:10Speaker 1: getting text and we're praying and we're and of course,
- 9:12Speaker 1: in my mind it's like, hey, Stuart's young and healthy and.
- 9:16Speaker 2: He'll get through this, so hey, dude, how's it.
- 9:18Speaker 1: You know, it's kind of casual, but then the messaging
- 9:21Speaker 1: ramps up and we know it's serious. So let's go
- 9:24Speaker 1: back to that that terrible day. You pass the fire station,
- 9:27Speaker 1: you think we're gonna make it.
- 9:28Speaker 2: To the e audi.
- 9:28Speaker 6: It was like, no, take me straight to the ear,
- 9:30Speaker 6: don't stop.
- 9:31Speaker 3: And it's good we're stopping there because one thing that's
- 9:34Speaker 3: crazy about the story. The last thing I remember is
- 9:37Speaker 3: watching the movie Creed on the night of April the sixth,
- 9:41Speaker 3: and the next thing I remember is starting to come
- 9:43Speaker 3: out of the fog and I see you, and I've
- 9:45Speaker 3: had to be told everything else.
- 9:48Speaker 1: So and that's an important thing for our audience to
- 9:50Speaker 1: understand that from from the March or April seventh on,
- 9:57Speaker 1: what the rest of this story you only know because
- 10:00Speaker 1: Kelly and the doctors and some close friends have told you,
- 10:04Speaker 1: because essentially you are.
- 10:05Speaker 4: Out of him, out of it.
- 10:06Speaker 1: So you get to the hospital. He hasn't slept in
- 10:09Speaker 1: seventy two hours.
- 10:10Speaker 2: He's very sick. His heart is racing. What happens.
- 10:13Speaker 5: So they allow me this time to go in with him,
- 10:17Speaker 5: and so my son now is sitting in the parking
- 10:19Speaker 5: line by himself. As soon as I go in, they
- 10:23Speaker 5: start asking me. Of course, we go into a secluded
- 10:25Speaker 5: area and they start asking me every question about his
- 10:29Speaker 5: symptoms and what's happening. And then the last thing they know.
- 10:34Speaker 5: The doctor says is we've got to intubate him. And
- 10:36Speaker 5: I'm like, I figured it the same day. This was
- 10:39Speaker 5: when we it was early morning on the seventh, So
- 10:41Speaker 5: he's like, we've got to intubate him because his oxygen
- 10:45Speaker 5: level was just horrifically low, and I said, I figured
- 10:49Speaker 5: you would, and he said, you're going to have to
- 10:52Speaker 5: leave now, and I'm like, okay. So the last thing
- 10:55Speaker 5: Stuart told me is you might have saved my life,
- 10:59Speaker 5: and they asked. They walked me out to the waiting
- 11:03Speaker 5: room and I sat there for probably maybe another forty
- 11:07Speaker 5: five minutes. At this point, my other my daughters had
- 11:10Speaker 5: gotten to the parking lot and we're sitting with our son.
- 11:12Speaker 5: So all three of them are sitting in the parking
- 11:14Speaker 5: lot and I'm waiting on somebody just to come tell
- 11:16Speaker 5: me the next step. Well, the first person that comes
- 11:19Speaker 5: and talks to me is a cardiologist and doctor Kakar,
- 11:25Speaker 5: and he comes in and says, hey, I want to
- 11:29Speaker 5: let you know that either your husband is either having
- 11:32Speaker 5: or has had a heart attack, which I'm going, what
- 11:36Speaker 5: I mean? You know, he's a healthy That never crossed
- 11:40Speaker 5: my mind. And he said, do we have permission to
- 11:43Speaker 5: go in and look? And I'm like absolutely. So that
- 11:47Speaker 5: was another two and a half probably hours. He comes
- 11:49Speaker 5: back finally and says his main artery was one hundred
- 11:52Speaker 5: percent blocked. We have put a stint in. He's also
- 11:56Speaker 5: in congestive heart failure. So we've put a pump on
- 11:59Speaker 5: his heart. At this time, I asked him, could I
- 12:03Speaker 5: get my children on the phone that he could tell
- 12:05Speaker 5: all of us instead of just me, and he said yeah.
- 12:07Speaker 5: So he told us all the information. At the same time,
- 12:10Speaker 5: my son said, is what are his chances of survival?
- 12:15Speaker 5: And he said, well, if if it was just the
- 12:19Speaker 5: heart attack, I'd say fifty percent, he said, but the
- 12:23Speaker 5: fact that he's COVID positive, they're assuming. They have not
- 12:26Speaker 5: tested him at this point, but of course all signs
- 12:28Speaker 5: point there. He's been intubated and he's in congestive heart failure.
- 12:33Speaker 6: He said, it's not good.
- 12:35Speaker 5: I don't give him much Basically, I don't give him
- 12:37Speaker 5: much hope. But then he said, what I will tell
- 12:40Speaker 5: you is I'm a man of faith. And he said
- 12:44Speaker 5: at this point, it's time to pray. And I'm like, okay,
- 12:48Speaker 5: I mean we can do that.
- 12:49Speaker 2: Yeah, And you may have already been doing something. I'm
- 12:51Speaker 2: thinking I.
- 12:52Speaker 6: Was definitely we had been definitely praying.
- 12:54Speaker 2: But to hear to hear a doctor say that, yes.
- 12:56Speaker 5: And he and literally I felt as if he went
- 13:00Speaker 5: to cry with me, and he wanted to get up
- 13:02Speaker 5: and hug me. But we can't do that because it
- 13:06Speaker 5: was just him and I. There's nobody else in the room.
- 13:09Speaker 5: And at that point they allowed me to stay until
- 13:12Speaker 5: he got moved to ICU.
- 13:14Speaker 6: And when he got moved to ICU, I walked up there.
- 13:16Speaker 6: I couldn't see him, but I walked up there.
- 13:18Speaker 5: I had to sign release papers and the lady told
- 13:21Speaker 5: me she esported me out and I went to the
- 13:24Speaker 5: parking lot, met my children. We all got in a
- 13:27Speaker 5: car together and just cried. And our older daughter said,
- 13:33Speaker 5: you know, can we pray?
- 13:34Speaker 6: Mom? And I'm like, absolutely, we can pray.
- 13:37Speaker 5: So we did, and then we separated cars and we
- 13:40Speaker 5: drove home. And on my drive home, I thought, I
- 13:43Speaker 5: haven't told anybody, but now's the time. If we need
- 13:47Speaker 5: a miracle and we need to pray, then I'm going
- 13:50Speaker 5: to ask every friend that I have to please pray
- 13:53Speaker 5: for him. So at that point I did put it
- 13:56Speaker 5: on all social media channels that I had to please pray,
- 14:00Speaker 5: and the people just were calling me and texting me.
- 14:04Speaker 5: Couldn't believe it because this was like five something in
- 14:06Speaker 5: the morning. This was not in the middle of the day,
- 14:10Speaker 5: so people were waking up to it. When we got home,
- 14:14Speaker 5: I we got everything unloaded. I walked upstairs and the
- 14:18Speaker 5: sun was rising and I was looking I was like,
- 14:20Speaker 5: oh that look how beautiful the sun's rising. And when
- 14:23Speaker 5: I looked out, my neighbor, which is also a good,
- 14:25Speaker 5: very good friend of our families, she's sitting on the
- 14:29Speaker 5: curb across from our house just with her Bible open
- 14:32Speaker 5: and just praying out loud. And I'm like, you know,
- 14:35Speaker 5: just like what are you doing? She said, I don't
- 14:37Speaker 5: know what else to do. And I think that's how
- 14:40Speaker 5: everybody felt, and that's how we felt.
- 14:42Speaker 6: I mean, we didn't know what else.
- 14:44Speaker 5: We were still in quarantine, so no family could be
- 14:47Speaker 5: around us, no friends could be around us.
- 14:49Speaker 6: We still couldn't go to the grocery store.
- 14:52Speaker 2: So it was just she's isolated.
- 14:55Speaker 1: And then you're at this place that you know some
- 14:59Speaker 1: people have been prep so many people where you're waiting
- 15:02Speaker 1: for the call.
- 15:03Speaker 6: To phone to phone phone call to a phone call.
- 15:04Speaker 1: Yeah, so you're on So you're on the ventilator sort
- 15:09Speaker 1: of the next part of the story for a week.
- 15:12Speaker 1: So we're from the seventh through the thirteenth, you're getting called.
- 15:18Speaker 5: You do you live from phone call to phone call?
- 15:20Speaker 5: You have a palliative care doctor. Her name is doctor Sayad,
- 15:24Speaker 5: and she became a very close part of our family.
- 15:27Speaker 5: She started facetiming us the next day. They did allow
- 15:29Speaker 5: us to take some pictures up to the room so
- 15:32Speaker 5: they could actually see him and see us, the nurses
- 15:34Speaker 5: and the people that were helping. Every time a nurse
- 15:37Speaker 5: would come on, I would ask, please tell me your name,
- 15:41Speaker 5: and I just our family wrote their names all on
- 15:44Speaker 5: our wall and a piece of paper on our wall,
- 15:45Speaker 5: just because I wanted them to know specifically, we are
- 15:50Speaker 5: praying for you by name, and I want you to
- 15:53Speaker 5: know from our family how much we appreciate you putting
- 15:55Speaker 5: your life on the line, in your family's life on
- 15:58Speaker 5: the line, just to care for our love to w
- 16:00Speaker 5: one and it means so much to us.
- 16:02Speaker 6: And I didn't want to forget that.
- 16:04Speaker 2: And that's a big part of this story, and it's
- 16:06Speaker 2: a huge part of the story.
- 16:07Speaker 1: You know, for the community in general, society in general,
- 16:10Speaker 1: there have been some i mean profiles and courage around
- 16:14Speaker 1: the medical personnel.
- 16:15Speaker 2: But for your family, these are you know, their names.
- 16:20Speaker 6: Their friends, They are personal heroes.
- 16:23Speaker 5: They are and they are a lifeline to the person
- 16:26Speaker 5: that we love and are fighting for.
- 16:28Speaker 6: So yes, that that happened.
- 16:30Speaker 5: From the next week there was the community gathered around
- 16:35Speaker 5: and tried to do different things.
- 16:36Speaker 6: They had a.
- 16:36Speaker 5: Prayer walk, the Florida soccer team created a zoom call
- 16:41Speaker 5: that was prayer for hundreds of people got on it
- 16:43Speaker 5: was It was overwhelming, the kindness that people were trying
- 16:48Speaker 5: because they didn't know what else to do.
- 16:49Speaker 2: Meanwhile, you.
- 16:53Speaker 3: Just had hallucinations that we should not talk about.
- 16:58Speaker 2: Why not?
- 17:00Speaker 1: So tell us another big part of this for those
- 17:02Speaker 1: of you who for those of us who were you know,
- 17:05Speaker 1: on the outside praying, getting information every once in a.
- 17:08Speaker 2: While, tell us the story about the blue heart in
- 17:11Speaker 2: the window.
- 17:12Speaker 5: The blue heart came after the next weekend was Easter weekend,
- 17:17Speaker 5: and we didn't know what else to do. You and
- 17:21Speaker 5: Sandra Head suggested we get our tested in the parking
- 17:24Speaker 5: lot of the church. And so we said we were
- 17:26Speaker 5: going to do that, and we did that that Monday
- 17:28Speaker 5: after Easter. But we thought, okay, our symptoms are mild enough,
- 17:32Speaker 5: we could at least ride together to the parking lot.
- 17:36Speaker 5: We didn't know. We knew he was in room seven. Yeah,
- 17:38Speaker 5: we knew he was in room seven on the fourth floor.
- 17:41Speaker 5: I knew what side of the hospital I came out of,
- 17:43Speaker 5: but that's all I knew.
- 17:45Speaker 6: At this point.
- 17:46Speaker 5: We were updating people via social media, so I think
- 17:48Speaker 5: some of the people from the hospital started following us
- 17:51Speaker 5: and realizing that we were sitting in the parking lot looking.
- 17:53Speaker 2: Up at the side of a hospital, wondering the hospital.
- 17:56Speaker 2: You know which window right.
- 17:57Speaker 5: Yes, And one of those first nurses, her name was Melody.
- 18:02Speaker 5: She came back to work after being off and she
- 18:06Speaker 5: brought this poster paper and it was a blue polka
- 18:11Speaker 5: dotted heart, and she put up in his window that
- 18:14Speaker 5: faced four hundred out in the parking lot, and she
- 18:19Speaker 5: told us, I have put this heart in the window
- 18:21Speaker 5: so you can know what room he's in, and a
- 18:24Speaker 5: small gesture on her part she's sinking.
- 18:27Speaker 6: But for us it was life. It was so life.
- 18:30Speaker 5: Giving for me and my children, as well as for
- 18:33Speaker 5: the community friends. And then it ended up becoming over
- 18:37Speaker 5: social media like this heart represented Stuart. It became like
- 18:42Speaker 5: what everybody was praying for, this one heart.
- 18:45Speaker 1: We among many, many people. And for those of you
- 18:48Speaker 1: who are not familiar with the Atlanta area or the
- 18:52Speaker 1: part of town that we're talking about, there's a major
- 18:55Speaker 1: highway and the hospital is on the highway and literally
- 18:58Speaker 1: on the highway you could glance at the hospital and
- 19:02Speaker 1: there's that, yeah, that blue heart, and like so many
- 19:05Speaker 1: we drove up, sat in the parking lot prayed for you,
- 19:09Speaker 1: you know, looking.
- 19:09Speaker 4: Up for the blue lie.
- 19:10Speaker 3: I know because once I did come out of the fog,
- 19:12Speaker 3: this nurse came came in my room one day and goes,
- 19:15Speaker 3: I don't know who you are, yeah, but I'm pretty
- 19:19Speaker 3: sure I just saw Andy Stanley in the parking Oh oh,
- 19:22Speaker 3: I didn't know that.
- 19:23Speaker 5: Part praying for you for you, So I'm like, okay,
- 19:29Speaker 5: but yeah, So that became a lifeline for us, and
- 19:32Speaker 5: that ended up the next weekend we ended. The community
- 19:36Speaker 5: ended up every thirty minutes somebody sitting in the parking
- 19:39Speaker 5: lot praying. And then also online or wherever they're from,
- 19:46Speaker 5: they could pray wherever they were for thirty minutes.
- 19:48Speaker 6: Sign up for a thirty minute prayer time.
- 19:51Speaker 5: It was, I mean just absolutely amazing and overwhelming how
- 19:55Speaker 5: much the community came out and loved and supported online
- 19:59Speaker 5: community as well as personal community.
- 20:02Speaker 3: There was also reason to pray as well, because I
- 20:06Speaker 3: would do really really well and then tank.
- 20:10Speaker 2: And then gets so hopeful. Yes that we're like he's
- 20:13Speaker 2: coming out of this, And then.
- 20:14Speaker 5: They kept saying which which to begin with? There was
- 20:17Speaker 5: no hope. Then that first weekend, I think a friend
- 20:22Speaker 5: of yours is doctor Callahan, and he had his associate
- 20:25Speaker 5: come in and see him over the weekend. His name
- 20:27Speaker 5: is doctor Jaggediesh And that was the first person that
- 20:29Speaker 5: ever gave me hope.
- 20:31Speaker 6: He told me on.
- 20:32Speaker 5: A Saturday, right before Easter, I think he's going to survive.
- 20:38Speaker 5: He goes, we're kind of seeing that how he is
- 20:41Speaker 5: running this course, that his survival rate is high. I
- 20:44Speaker 5: just broke down, started crying on the phone because you know,
- 20:47Speaker 5: and he's like, are you okay?
- 20:49Speaker 6: Yes, but you're the first person then so told me this.
- 20:52Speaker 1: Well, so to drop another important date if I get
- 20:56Speaker 1: this right. So you go in on April seventh. On
- 20:59Speaker 1: April twth, I don't know who told me this story. First,
- 21:03Speaker 1: there's this moment where there's six doctors standing around Stewart
- 21:07Speaker 1: all basically scratching their heads, like we've done everything we
- 21:10Speaker 1: know to do.
- 21:10Speaker 2: It's been up and down, up and down.
- 21:12Speaker 1: Right now it's just down and we have run out
- 21:15Speaker 1: of options.
- 21:16Speaker 2: So tell us a little bit about that. That was
- 21:19Speaker 2: a big day.
- 21:19Speaker 6: It was huge.
- 21:20Speaker 5: The week before he had been excavated and reintubated within
- 21:24Speaker 5: three hours.
- 21:25Speaker 2: It was.
- 21:25Speaker 6: It was so so for.
- 21:27Speaker 2: The non medical folks taking off the ventilator put back
- 21:30Speaker 2: back on apparently, which he got really.
- 21:32Speaker 4: Really agitated and wanted to get out of the bed.
- 21:34Speaker 5: Oxygen dropped again, and they kept saying leading up to
- 21:38Speaker 5: the twentieth they kept saying, twenty four more hours, twenty
- 21:41Speaker 5: four more let's give him steroids, twenty four for his lungs,
- 21:43Speaker 5: twenty four more hours, and it kept just progressing to
- 21:46Speaker 5: the point where he was on spontaneous spontaneous meaning that
- 21:50Speaker 5: he was breathing on his own on the ventilator for
- 21:53Speaker 5: over twenty four hours, but they wanted to wait until
- 21:57Speaker 5: like Monday, well, Sunday night. He threw up in his
- 22:01Speaker 5: ventilator and it just created this downward spiral of all complications.
- 22:06Speaker 6: From that point.
- 22:07Speaker 5: He started bleeding internally, he had ulcers from the ventilator.
- 22:11Speaker 4: My body was septic.
- 22:12Speaker 6: His body was septic.
- 22:14Speaker 5: He had a horrific bacterial infection that more doctors and
- 22:18Speaker 5: nurses didn't really want to go into his room because
- 22:21Speaker 5: of the bacterial infection than the covid he had. He
- 22:26Speaker 5: had blood clots and his legs, and obviously the blood
- 22:29Speaker 5: clot is what created the heart attack. So they had
- 22:32Speaker 5: to be very careful about how they treated the gi
- 22:35Speaker 5: bleed because of the blood clots, because if you treated one,
- 22:38Speaker 5: then you didn't know if the other one was going
- 22:39Speaker 5: to dislodge. So, I mean, it was at that point
- 22:42Speaker 5: there was like six doctors sand over him, going, he's dying.
- 22:45Speaker 6: What do we do?
- 22:46Speaker 1: Right, because this was that that spiral that happens not infrequently,
- 22:52Speaker 1: where it just the body just takes over and there's
- 22:55Speaker 1: there's you.
- 22:56Speaker 2: It's a little bit like whack a mole. If we
- 22:58Speaker 2: treat one, it's going to make the other work.
- 23:00Speaker 1: So they're standing around the bed and then a doctor
- 23:04Speaker 1: has an idea.
- 23:06Speaker 2: Yes, that made all the different.
- 23:07Speaker 6: Doctor Harrich, Yes, he came.
- 23:10Speaker 5: He called me and he said he was. He basically said,
- 23:13Speaker 5: your husband's dying. He's very sick. And I said, yes,
- 23:15Speaker 5: I know, and he said, I want to try something.
- 23:18Speaker 5: I want to try a plasma exchange. He said, it's
- 23:20Speaker 5: very low risk, we use it for sickle cell patients,
- 23:25Speaker 5: but I you know, I think it might work. And
- 23:28Speaker 5: if it doesn't, we didn't. There was no harm right,
- 23:31Speaker 5: and I said, please try it. Whatever you want to do,
- 23:33Speaker 5: try it, do something. And so on Tuesday afternoon he
- 23:37Speaker 5: started the first plasma exchange. Within twenty four hours, he
- 23:40Speaker 5: was a different person. His eyes had lit up, he
- 23:43Speaker 5: was moving his hands, totally different person. They did another
- 23:47Speaker 5: plasma exchange on Wednesday, by they thought they were going
- 23:50Speaker 5: to do one on Thursday. They said he didn't need one.
- 23:55Speaker 5: His numbers had stabilized. They had taken him off like
- 23:58Speaker 5: all blood pressure medicine. It was crazy, the difference. On
- 24:02Speaker 5: Friday they excavated him. I didn't tell anybody they excavated
- 24:05Speaker 5: him besides my immediate family, just because of what happened
- 24:07Speaker 5: in the past, and I didn't want to get hopes
- 24:10Speaker 5: up and then have to come back and do another
- 24:12Speaker 5: nose dive again. So I kept it quiet until late
- 24:16Speaker 5: that afternoon and he and from that point on.
- 24:21Speaker 6: Things just started going so fast. He was he was
- 24:23Speaker 6: sitting in.
- 24:24Speaker 5: A chair and Saturday, the physical therapists had him sitting
- 24:27Speaker 5: up in a chair for like an hour on Saturday.
- 24:30Speaker 6: After he was excavated on Friday, Sunday, I took his
- 24:33Speaker 6: phone to him. He's facetiming us himself.
- 24:37Speaker 2: Is that when you went to the ICU and got
- 24:39Speaker 2: to see.
- 24:39Speaker 6: Him for that a little bit later. Because then, so.
- 24:43Speaker 1: This is all within a week, all because I remember
- 24:45Speaker 1: getting to text, Yeah, like wait a minute, we're.
- 24:48Speaker 2: Yes, we're planning. We're mentally planning a funeral.
- 24:51Speaker 6: It was it was bad. It was bad.
- 24:54Speaker 5: I remember walking down our street and I wasn't really
- 24:58Speaker 5: making eye contact with people, and one of the neighbor says,
- 25:01Speaker 5: how are things today, And I just started crying.
- 25:03Speaker 6: I say, it's not good. It's not good.
- 25:06Speaker 5: And at that point the turnaround was so drastic. His
- 25:14Speaker 5: paliative care doctor thought he's about to turn a corner.
- 25:17Speaker 5: He's got one er, he can go one or two ways.
- 25:20Speaker 5: And she got permission for me to come spend forty
- 25:24Speaker 5: five minutes with them.
- 25:25Speaker 2: So this is your nice time to see him in three.
- 25:28Speaker 6: Yes, at least twenty something days.
- 25:30Speaker 2: Wow.
- 25:31Speaker 3: I thought it was just a really attractive nurse out
- 25:34Speaker 3: in the hallway, and then I'm like, there was a
- 25:38Speaker 3: nurse in my room and I'm like, I'm I think
- 25:40Speaker 3: that's my wife. So you're so y're but at this point,
- 25:43Speaker 3: I'm coming out of the fog and yeah, and I
- 25:48Speaker 3: had and I still am it's hard for me to
- 25:50Speaker 3: talk about. I was so emotional because I couldn't put
- 25:53Speaker 3: the pieces together.
- 25:54Speaker 4: Of where am I and I had a heart.
- 25:56Speaker 5: Attack, and you couldn't understand why we weren't there right.
- 25:59Speaker 3: So her coming in the room and just being able
- 26:02Speaker 3: to touch her and kiss her, and then for her
- 26:04Speaker 3: to kind of explain, this is what's going on. It's
- 26:08Speaker 3: the brilliance and wisdom of doctor Siah because she just
- 26:11Speaker 3: called it. She's like, this is what he needs. He
- 26:13Speaker 3: needs his.
- 26:13Speaker 5: Wife and I And with that, in regard to that,
- 26:18Speaker 5: I had to there's a couple of situations that happened,
- 26:22Speaker 5: but on my way, of course, I thought I threw
- 26:24Speaker 5: all risk out the window when when she called and said,
- 26:27Speaker 5: I've got a surprise for you. So I'm like, yes,
- 26:30Speaker 5: I'm in the car, I'm on the way to the hospital.
- 26:33Speaker 6: Well, my son.
- 26:35Speaker 5: Calls doctor Sayad as I'm driving to the hospital and
- 26:38Speaker 5: wants her to explain to him why it is okay
- 26:41Speaker 5: for me to come now when I couldn't come all
- 26:44Speaker 5: this time? And then could she promise him that he
- 26:48Speaker 5: was going to take care of me? Was I gonna
- 26:51Speaker 5: what were you going to do to take care because
- 26:53Speaker 5: I didn't even think about it, but like, your dad's
- 26:55Speaker 5: almost dying and now your mom's going to be put
- 26:57Speaker 5: at risk. You know, that didn't even cross my mind.
- 27:00Speaker 5: I'm just thinking, I get to see Stuart. I'm going
- 27:04Speaker 5: which when I got to the hospital, doctor Syed was like,
- 27:06Speaker 5: your son just called.
- 27:09Speaker 2: He's looking out after mom?
- 27:10Speaker 1: Yes, he was.
- 27:11Speaker 5: And then in new days to garb up which to
- 27:14Speaker 5: go in, Yeah, totally.
- 27:16Speaker 2: Well, no wonder you didn't recognize.
- 27:17Speaker 3: Her right well, and it does. I think it changed
- 27:20Speaker 3: her perspective towards.
- 27:22Speaker 5: Your perspective towards the nurses and the doctors to understand
- 27:25Speaker 5: the layer of clothings you have to put on to
- 27:27Speaker 5: even walk into the room, and that you have to
- 27:30Speaker 5: take that all those layers off to leave the room
- 27:33Speaker 5: before you can go into another room.
- 27:34Speaker 4: And start the process over again.
- 27:36Speaker 5: Yes, it's it was unbelievable, the experience of that.
- 27:41Speaker 1: And then if I have this correct, two days later,
- 27:44Speaker 1: they bring Stuart out in.
- 27:45Speaker 2: The IC parking lot.
- 27:47Speaker 6: Is this leave?
- 27:49Speaker 4: I see you? And they do? I think we do
- 27:50Speaker 4: have video of this?
- 27:51Speaker 1: Oh yeah, yeah, let's let's uh, let's just stop and
- 27:53Speaker 1: let everybody watch this, because so this is the moment.
- 27:56Speaker 1: Then they're bringing you out of ICU to take you
- 27:58Speaker 1: to a regular, regular room.
- 28:00Speaker 6: We're on FaceTime, so we're watching the whole thing.
- 28:04Speaker 3: Playing the rock the Rocky theme.
- 28:07Speaker 2: So let's just roll that.
- 28:08Speaker 1: I think everybody will appreciate this watch thing.
- 28:33Speaker 7: Person.
- 28:34Speaker 3: Thank you all for words if you're not playing, but
- 28:37Speaker 3: also thank you for completely.
- 28:47Speaker 7: Appreciate than very much. Thank you rolling around.
- 29:22Speaker 1: Yeah, we uh, we all saw that, and I mean
- 29:27Speaker 1: we all cried. I just don't remember Santra and I.
- 29:30Speaker 1: I saw it. I cried, I said, Santra, have you
- 29:32Speaker 1: seen this? We cried? It was it felt miraculous, as
- 29:37Speaker 1: we you know day by day.
- 29:39Speaker 3: And one of the things you'll notice if you watch
- 29:42Speaker 3: that video closely is when they bring me out of
- 29:44Speaker 3: the room, I'm clapping, and I was clapping because this
- 29:51Speaker 3: was really a celebration of all those men and women
- 29:53Speaker 3: who fought from my life. It wasn't for me and
- 29:57Speaker 3: I had such a hard time talking because I just
- 30:00Speaker 3: was looking in the faces of people, as Kelly said earlier,
- 30:06Speaker 3: that had risked their.
- 30:07Speaker 4: Life to save my life. You know, when you.
- 30:09Speaker 3: Think about Jesus saying, there's no greater love in this
- 30:13Speaker 3: than someone would lay down their life for a friend.
- 30:16Speaker 3: I think from now on, every time we think about
- 30:19Speaker 3: doctors and nurses, that's what we're going to think about.
- 30:21Speaker 3: And that's what I was thinking about rolling out of there. Well,
- 30:24Speaker 3: these men and women are clapping for me. Survivors get
- 30:27Speaker 3: way too much credit. It's the It's the men and
- 30:30Speaker 3: women and I mean friends like you and all over
- 30:34Speaker 3: this country that prayed and loved me home. That's what
- 30:39Speaker 3: that parade was about. And I'm just so like humbled
- 30:44Speaker 3: and grateful for that sacrifice. We can't be the same after.
- 30:49Speaker 5: And for the for the nurses and doctors that day
- 30:52Speaker 5: that stood in the hallway, I think it's hope and
- 30:57Speaker 5: that what is what keeps them going is the one
- 31:00Speaker 5: piece of hope that we got. One person is leaving
- 31:05Speaker 5: room seven and is going to a regular room.
- 31:08Speaker 2: Wow.
- 31:10Speaker 1: So from that point on, you're conscious of the journey.
- 31:13Speaker 1: From that point forward, relatively conscious.
- 31:16Speaker 2: You couldn't see right, Yeah, I.
- 31:18Speaker 3: Was having a difficult time seeing and all joking aside.
- 31:22Speaker 3: I did like I thought when I was in the
- 31:26Speaker 3: medically induced coma. I thought I was a part of
- 31:29Speaker 3: a drug cartel war. I got stuck in a Tyler
- 31:33Speaker 3: Perry sitcom. I couldn't get out of the worst was
- 31:37Speaker 3: I was underneath a plexiglass floor, underwater and people were
- 31:41Speaker 3: walking and talking above me. I had on an oxygen mask,
- 31:45Speaker 3: but I couldn't find a way out. So as you're
- 31:48Speaker 3: coming out of the fog like reality didn't make sense.
- 31:52Speaker 3: But once I got into a regular room, I was
- 31:56Speaker 3: able to. You know, the more that medicine got out
- 31:59Speaker 3: of your body, the physical therapist.
- 32:03Speaker 4: And all of that.
- 32:04Speaker 5: The reason they allowed us to see him outside was
- 32:07Speaker 5: because they did think they were going to have to
- 32:09Speaker 5: take him to a cute therapy where he would have
- 32:11Speaker 5: to stay for another week or two. And I he
- 32:13Speaker 5: was fighting them so hard, and I'm like, he will
- 32:16Speaker 5: do the right thing if he can just let him
- 32:18Speaker 5: see us, if he can see us and touch us,
- 32:21Speaker 5: then he will.
- 32:22Speaker 6: He will do the right thing. If that's what you
- 32:24Speaker 6: feel like.
- 32:24Speaker 3: I just wanted to be able to tell my kids
- 32:26Speaker 3: I'm going to be okay.
- 32:29Speaker 2: So that was that was the mission to the thirty
- 32:33Speaker 2: April thirtieth.
- 32:35Speaker 1: So they bring you outside in the parking lot freeze,
- 32:39Speaker 1: and this is the first time your kids have seen you.
- 32:42Speaker 1: I guess the second time Kelly seen you says this
- 32:44Speaker 1: whole since she said goodbye to you that.
- 32:46Speaker 3: And I had, you know, I sat them down after
- 32:50Speaker 3: the crying and the hugs and kisses, I just sat
- 32:53Speaker 3: them down and said, I'm going to be okay, but
- 32:55Speaker 3: this is what I think I'm going to have to do.
- 32:57Speaker 3: I'm going to have to go to a cute physical
- 32:58Speaker 3: therapy and this is crazy. The two nurses, two physical
- 33:03Speaker 3: therapists that wheeled me down took me back up to
- 33:06Speaker 3: my room and one of them said, Stuart, have you
- 33:09Speaker 3: walked without your walker? And I said, yeah I have.
- 33:12Speaker 3: She's like, well show me, like right when I got
- 33:14Speaker 3: to the room and I walked across the room and
- 33:17Speaker 3: she said, you don't need a cute physical therapy.
- 33:19Speaker 2: Wow.
- 33:20Speaker 4: And so from that point on he came home. Yeah.
- 33:23Speaker 2: When did he come home?
- 33:24Speaker 6: May second? Two days later.
- 33:25Speaker 3: Days later, all of our friends and family had lined.
- 33:29Speaker 2: The parade a parade. Yeah. It was a big deal,
- 33:32Speaker 2: big deal, and.
- 33:33Speaker 5: They were What's so sweet is our friends feel just
- 33:39Speaker 5: as much celebrated as he did, because I think this
- 33:43Speaker 5: was a fight we all we dug in and we're
- 33:46Speaker 5: fighting for on his behalf, you know, And it was
- 33:49Speaker 5: just a huge, humongous celebration of he did it. He
- 33:55Speaker 5: made it, He's alive, he's here, and to actually see
- 33:58Speaker 5: a miracle walking when and we felt, you know, I
- 34:04Speaker 5: don't even know what the number is today, but one
- 34:07Speaker 5: hundred and thirty one thirty two thousand people have died.
- 34:10Speaker 5: And why God chose to save him, you know, we
- 34:15Speaker 5: couldn't understand that, And we couldn't understand just the despair
- 34:22Speaker 5: that these people and these families because of what we felt,
- 34:24Speaker 5: but then that they had to say goodbye, that we
- 34:27Speaker 5: felt so unworthy that we're getting to celebrate him, but
- 34:31Speaker 5: we're also so grateful and to walk in the midst
- 34:35Speaker 5: of that of knowing that thank you God for saving him,
- 34:39Speaker 5: and then and then the reality that other people, so
- 34:43Speaker 5: many other thousands of people have walked through where they
- 34:46Speaker 5: did not have our reality.
- 34:49Speaker 2: So before we wrap up.
- 34:50Speaker 1: I do want to ask some specific questions really as
- 34:53Speaker 1: this this whole event inter sex with your faith. As
- 34:58Speaker 1: I mentioned when we started, I mean, you've both of
- 35:01Speaker 1: you been doing ministry for many, many years. You've taught
- 35:05Speaker 1: all kinds of things, you've navigated people through all kinds
- 35:09Speaker 1: of things as a pasture, but this was your time.
- 35:14Speaker 2: Suddenly you're in.
- 35:15Speaker 1: The valley literally the valley of the shadow of death,
- 35:18Speaker 1: and now you're on the other side of it. And
- 35:20Speaker 1: as you alluded to earlier, Steward, you can't come through
- 35:23Speaker 1: this unmarked. So Kelly, I want to start with you.
- 35:28Speaker 1: When you told the story before, you said there was
- 35:31Speaker 1: a moment you were on your porch. It was during
- 35:34Speaker 1: a sunrise, and.
- 35:36Speaker 2: You had kind of a breakthrough.
- 35:38Speaker 1: You described as sort of this intimate moment with God
- 35:41Speaker 1: is your questions and fears, everything kind of comes crashing
- 35:45Speaker 1: in it.
- 35:46Speaker 5: Did I think the whole time through, from the very
- 35:50Speaker 5: first night, I was confident that God could heal him,
- 35:56Speaker 5: but I didn't know if he was going to choose to.
- 35:59Speaker 5: And my couple things through the whole process is with
- 36:04Speaker 5: my family is I didn't want this to tear us apart,
- 36:08Speaker 5: and I did not want my relationship to God to
- 36:12Speaker 5: change for them to see a change in me, regardless
- 36:15Speaker 5: of the outcome. And that was my two biggest strongest
- 36:19Speaker 5: things through the whole process. The night that he threw
- 36:22Speaker 5: up in his ventilator, I couldn't go back to sleep,
- 36:24Speaker 5: and so I got up and I just sat outside,
- 36:28Speaker 5: had a cup of coffee and the sun was coming up,
- 36:30Speaker 5: and I just felt like I just said, all right, God,
- 36:35Speaker 5: this is it. We've gone up and down, up and down,
- 36:39Speaker 5: and here we are and we're at a crossroads.
- 36:43Speaker 6: I don't want to give him up, but I will.
- 36:46Speaker 5: And this is I feel like what i've You can
- 36:50Speaker 5: have him if that's what you want. And the day
- 36:53Speaker 5: before I had read something from Bob Golf and it says,
- 36:59Speaker 5: Hope doesn't go to sleep just because it's dark outside.
- 37:02Speaker 5: It lights a candle and stays up waiting for the
- 37:05Speaker 5: rest of the story. Are you living in anticipation of
- 37:08Speaker 5: God surprising you? This is a place where God meets
- 37:12Speaker 5: us in the power of the resurrection.
- 37:14Speaker 6: It's in the dark places he finds us, in the
- 37:17Speaker 6: places between the miracles.
- 37:19Speaker 2: Wow.
- 37:20Speaker 5: And I didn't know what miracle I had come from
- 37:21Speaker 5: and what miracle was headed to, but I knew I
- 37:24Speaker 5: was in that middle, and I knew that that was
- 37:26Speaker 5: the only thing I had to hold on to. I
- 37:30Speaker 5: would sit in the parking lot and I would scream
- 37:33Speaker 5: Psalms ninety one at the window, just saying I declare
- 37:39Speaker 5: and every one of those verses, and then I would scream,
- 37:44Speaker 5: this is a move but Taalshakhav's Leonard and just scream
- 37:48Speaker 5: at the top of my lungs, this is we need
- 37:51Speaker 5: to move in room seven.
- 37:53Speaker 6: I knew he was capable.
- 37:55Speaker 5: I knew he could perform a miracle, but I didn't
- 37:57Speaker 5: know if he was going to choose to And when
- 37:59Speaker 5: I I'm looking around at all the death and I'm thinking,
- 38:04Speaker 5: why would he choose to save him and not.
- 38:08Speaker 6: All these other people?
- 38:10Speaker 5: And people so many people would call us and say, God,
- 38:14Speaker 5: it's just going to have such a great give him
- 38:16Speaker 5: such a great testimony. This is going to be such
- 38:18Speaker 5: a great testimony. I can't wait to hear him talk
- 38:20Speaker 5: about it or write a book. And my children in
- 38:25Speaker 5: the middle of it. And my children would go, that
- 38:27Speaker 5: has got to be the cruelest thing someone could ever say.
- 38:31Speaker 6: Why would God do this to our dad so he'd
- 38:34Speaker 6: have a better testimony.
- 38:36Speaker 5: And finally I got to the point where I would
- 38:38Speaker 5: say to people, I appreciate what you're saying, but I'm
- 38:41Speaker 5: very confident that Stuart served God before in his life,
- 38:46Speaker 5: before this happened, and regardless of this had happened or not,
- 38:50Speaker 5: this would not have changed the love he has in
- 38:53Speaker 5: the relationship he has with God. And I don't know
- 38:57Speaker 5: that it will make it different. If he survived, I'm
- 39:01Speaker 5: pretty confident that he'd be content him and I to
- 39:04Speaker 5: sit in our house and be for Georgia and never go.
- 39:07Speaker 6: Anywhere else and kid, if he survives through this.
- 39:11Speaker 5: But that was my moment that I had of clarity
- 39:14Speaker 5: of God had not given me an answer one way
- 39:17Speaker 5: or the other. But I knew there was little, small
- 39:20Speaker 5: things He was showing me throughout the whole process, but
- 39:24Speaker 5: I didn't know which direction it was headed.
- 39:27Speaker 2: And the thing that's so important about this listening to
- 39:30Speaker 2: you say.
- 39:30Speaker 1: It is that is faith. Yeah, because it's something we've
- 39:34Speaker 1: talked about in the past. You know, there's a theory
- 39:36Speaker 1: of faith that faith is like a power and if
- 39:38Speaker 1: you have enough faith, yes, you know God has to
- 39:41Speaker 1: or God's going to. And that is not a New
- 39:43Speaker 1: Testament version of faith. It is exactly what you said, Kelly.
- 39:46Speaker 1: Faith is God. I have confidence in you, and whatever
- 39:50Speaker 1: you choose to do or not do, I have confidence
- 39:54Speaker 1: in you. I don't have confidence in an outcome. I
- 39:57Speaker 1: have confidence in the one who controls outcomes. The thing
- 40:00Speaker 1: that our audience may have missed in all this, this
- 40:03Speaker 1: all happened during the Easter season, right, I mean, you're
- 40:07Speaker 1: in the middle of this, as the world is celebrating
- 40:09Speaker 1: the resurrection and the foundation of our faith, this is
- 40:13Speaker 1: suddenly Easter takes on a new significance.
- 40:18Speaker 3: I read this week, and I think this parallels with
- 40:21Speaker 3: what you're saying. The writer posed this question, have you
- 40:26Speaker 3: placed your trust in your theology or the god of
- 40:29Speaker 3: your theology? And that's really easy for us to get confused.
- 40:33Speaker 3: And the way that Kelly and our children have really
- 40:35Speaker 3: inspired me is exactly what you're saying. The Right of
- 40:39Speaker 3: Hebrews says that we can approach the throne of God
- 40:43Speaker 3: with confidence and he'll give us grace and mercy, but
- 40:47Speaker 3: those are not the outcomes we really desire. What we
- 40:50Speaker 3: want to do is go well, no, we want him
- 40:52Speaker 3: to live and we want him to be completely healthy.
- 40:56Speaker 3: And the Right of Hebrews goes, you can have confidence
- 40:58Speaker 3: that He's going to give you grace to go through
- 41:00Speaker 3: whatever it is that you're going to go through, and
- 41:02Speaker 3: He's going to be merciful to you in that process.
- 41:05Speaker 3: And it does it pushes against this. If we get
- 41:09Speaker 3: really honest, I think all of us, we tend to
- 41:14Speaker 3: live our faith winds up being a churched up version
- 41:19Speaker 3: of the American dream YEP, with just enough Jesus to
- 41:22Speaker 3: make it seem legitimate. And what's happened to us is
- 41:27Speaker 3: that that's been knocked out from under us. And now
- 41:31Speaker 3: you go, okay, are we going to are we going
- 41:34Speaker 3: to trust Jesus? Are we going to lean the full
- 41:36Speaker 3: weight of our life on him? Or are we going
- 41:39Speaker 3: to trust what we think about him or what we
- 41:41Speaker 3: believe about him?
- 41:42Speaker 4: And those are two different things.
- 41:44Speaker 3: That's what That's the way I feel like Kelly inspire
- 41:48Speaker 3: is still inspiring me.
- 41:50Speaker 1: That whole idea, Well, that moment is I mean when
- 41:54Speaker 1: you said God, I'm giving him to you. That is
- 42:00Speaker 1: an essential part of every extraordinary story of faith. Is
- 42:06Speaker 1: Heavenly Father, you know what I want? You know what
- 42:08Speaker 1: I want for the kids. You know what would be easier.
- 42:11Speaker 1: I'm not going to hold you to that.
- 42:13Speaker 2: I trust you. That is New Testament faith. Stuart.
- 42:19Speaker 1: This may be a sort of an odd question, but
- 42:21Speaker 1: is there anything and you've kind of covered this, is
- 42:23Speaker 1: there anything you want everybody to understand about the virus?
- 42:27Speaker 1: I mean there are so many theories there. I mean,
- 42:31Speaker 1: you know, there's every perspective in the world on COVID
- 42:34Speaker 1: nineteen and what it means and what's behind it, and
- 42:37Speaker 1: it's been politicized.
- 42:40Speaker 2: What thoughts on that.
- 42:43Speaker 3: I spent all last summer with youth leaders from all
- 42:46Speaker 3: across the country talking about this thing. That the opposite
- 42:51Speaker 3: of the opposite of shallow isn't deep. The opposite of
- 42:56Speaker 3: shallow is personal. Okay, say that again, the opposite, the
- 43:00Speaker 3: opposite of shallow isn't deep. We think that the opposite
- 43:02Speaker 3: of shallow is deep. The reality is that the opposite
- 43:06Speaker 3: of shallow is personal. Once something becomes personal to you,
- 43:08Speaker 3: it becomes deep.
- 43:09Speaker 2: Gotcha.
- 43:10Speaker 3: And this is the harsh reality. Once this virus became
- 43:15Speaker 3: personal to us, it becomes deep. And I think our
- 43:21Speaker 3: deepest conviction is not for people necessarily to feel sorry
- 43:25Speaker 3: for me or to be even excited for me. Even
- 43:29Speaker 3: though I appreciate that our deeper conviction, we feel like
- 43:33Speaker 3: it is increble because it's real. It's not a conspiracy theory,
- 43:39Speaker 3: this is not a political agenda.
- 43:43Speaker 4: And more than anything, Andy.
- 43:44Speaker 3: It's incredibly disrespectful to the medical community, men and women
- 43:49Speaker 3: who are risking their own life.
- 43:51Speaker 2: To save lives, to save strangers.
- 43:53Speaker 4: To save strangers.
- 43:55Speaker 3: That's the thing I hope and pray we can get
- 43:59Speaker 3: and it really does reveal what may be America's fundamental
- 44:05Speaker 3: character flaw, and that is we have a difficult time
- 44:08Speaker 3: considering other people before ourselves.
- 44:11Speaker 2: It might be universal, it may be universal. It is
- 44:14Speaker 2: certain America, it.
- 44:15Speaker 3: Is very yes, but that at the crux of it
- 44:19Speaker 3: all is what we have experienced is people being selfless
- 44:23Speaker 3: toward us, whether it's through their prayer love. You know,
- 44:27Speaker 3: James said, you show me your faith, I'll show you
- 44:29Speaker 3: my deeds. You know how grateful I am that men
- 44:32Speaker 3: and women who were working in the hospital didn't just
- 44:35Speaker 3: pray for me, like they put feet to their faith
- 44:38Speaker 3: and worked and fought for me. That's the thing I
- 44:42Speaker 3: hope people get that. And Kelly did such an unbelievable
- 44:45Speaker 3: job of celebrating the medical personnel too, of feeding the
- 44:50Speaker 3: ER team and the ICU team while I was in
- 44:53Speaker 3: the hospital things I didn't even know we're going on,
- 44:55Speaker 3: just because that was kind of becoming a parent to
- 44:58Speaker 3: her as well.
- 45:00Speaker 4: This thing is real.
- 45:02Speaker 3: We could show you text and emails we've gotten just
- 45:06Speaker 3: this week from our palwerative care doctors like pray for us.
- 45:10Speaker 4: We're exhausted. We keep losing people.
- 45:13Speaker 3: So that's what I would say that at the like
- 45:16Speaker 3: the bottom rung of our humanity is put a mask on,
- 45:22Speaker 3: care about your neighbor, and then obviously more than that
- 45:27Speaker 3: past that.
- 45:28Speaker 1: Yeah, Kelly, at some point in this journey, and I
- 45:32Speaker 1: don't know where this was in the sequence, you had
- 45:35Speaker 1: a conversation with your kids. Again, they're all in their twenties.
- 45:39Speaker 1: Everybody's still single. They're watching their mom, who's also a wife,
- 45:45Speaker 1: And you know, you're in both of these roles, but
- 45:48Speaker 1: you're intensely in each of these roles. You're parenting because
- 45:52Speaker 1: for those of you with little kids, parenting never ends.
- 45:54Speaker 8: Right.
- 45:55Speaker 1: Our kids are in their twenties, But you had a
- 45:57Speaker 1: conversation with them about marriage.
- 46:00Speaker 2: Can you talk a little bit about that?
- 46:01Speaker 5: Sure, I wanted my kids to understand at that moment that,
- 46:06Speaker 5: regardless of what happened to their dad, I wanted them
- 46:10Speaker 5: to feel confident in our relationship that if he was
- 46:16Speaker 5: not to survive, that I have been loved more than
- 46:20Speaker 5: ninety nine point nine percent of the marriages in the world.
- 46:25Speaker 5: That we left no regret out there, that the love
- 46:31Speaker 5: he has given me in our life and the fight
- 46:34Speaker 5: that we have had for our relationship and our marriage
- 46:39Speaker 5: was a beautiful thing, and I just wanted them to
- 46:43Speaker 5: hear me verbally say that if this is the way
- 46:46Speaker 5: this goes and he doesn't come back, I am content
- 46:51Speaker 5: that I have been loved.
- 46:53Speaker 1: Well, wow, that there wasn't anything unresolved. Nope, there's no regret.
- 46:58Speaker 5: And he always told me, because of the fact that
- 47:00Speaker 5: he travels, I think we talked about death a lot,
- 47:05Speaker 5: just not knowing what might would happen one day and
- 47:07Speaker 5: if this happens, this is And he always told me,
- 47:10Speaker 5: if something happens to me, know that I'm fighting to
- 47:13Speaker 5: get back to you and to the kids. Know that
- 47:15Speaker 5: I will fight with everything I have. And so I
- 47:18Speaker 5: knew that I was very kind because he's told me
- 47:20Speaker 5: that numerous times, but.
- 47:22Speaker 4: Usually after I watched the movie Taken.
- 47:27Speaker 2: That in Jaws, right, you know.
- 47:31Speaker 6: My children looked at me and said, Mom, we've never doubted.
- 47:34Speaker 8: We know that.
- 47:36Speaker 6: So that was a very special moment.
- 47:39Speaker 2: Well, to know that they've seen that, it's huge.
- 47:43Speaker 1: So, Stuart, I want to wrap up with I think
- 47:44Speaker 1: the maybe the hardest question or the biggest question. One
- 47:49Speaker 1: of the mysteries of our faith is the providence of God.
- 47:52Speaker 1: Who's in charge the sovereignty of God?
- 47:54Speaker 2: You know, what role do we have?
- 47:56Speaker 1: And you touched on this earlier, you know, did God
- 48:00Speaker 1: caused this to happen?
- 48:01Speaker 2: Do you just respond to what happens? Is life random?
- 48:04Speaker 1: How have you has has this event changed your view
- 48:08Speaker 1: of the sovereignty of God or God's activity in the world?
- 48:12Speaker 1: I mean, how the whole issue of certainty. Talk a
- 48:15Speaker 1: little bit about that.
- 48:16Speaker 3: Well, Kelly and I had already been wrestling with that
- 48:18Speaker 3: a little bit of We did have a window of
- 48:21Speaker 3: time as empty nesters where she would travel with me,
- 48:24Speaker 3: when I would go and speak different places. And the
- 48:26Speaker 3: more we've been around the country, the more we've talked
- 48:30Speaker 3: to people, the more we've like, I started feeling really
- 48:34Speaker 3: antsy about this reality that and this sounds really harsh, Andy,
- 48:41Speaker 3: but I feel like we've made an idol out of certainty,
- 48:47Speaker 3: like we and an idol isn't something. An idol isn't
- 48:51Speaker 3: an idol because it has a particular, you know, property
- 48:55Speaker 3: to it. An idol is an idol because of the
- 48:58Speaker 3: value you place on it, right, And so much of
- 49:03Speaker 3: our existence revolves around security and certainty. And what I
- 49:12Speaker 3: think has happened in our life as a result of
- 49:15Speaker 3: this is this unveiling of the fact that you've got
- 49:23Speaker 3: your value on the wrong things. The only thing you
- 49:27Speaker 3: can trust, you know. The Riter of Hebrews says, Jesus
- 49:31Speaker 3: is the same, yesterday, today, and forever. He doesn't say
- 49:34Speaker 3: your circumstances are, doesn't say your marriage will be, doesn't
- 49:36Speaker 3: say your health will be, doesn't say your children will be,
- 49:39Speaker 3: doesn't say your country will be, doesn't say the economy
- 49:42Speaker 3: will be. Jesus is the same, yesterday, today, and forever.
- 49:45Speaker 3: So the question becomes, then, why would I lean my
- 49:49Speaker 3: life on anything but Him? Do I think that God
- 49:55Speaker 3: made this happen. It's such an interesting tension, And because
- 50:00Speaker 3: to believe in an all knowing God is to believe
- 50:04Speaker 3: that God knows everything. I don't know if God made
- 50:07Speaker 3: it happen. I do know he wants to make it matter.
- 50:11Speaker 3: And because he wants to make it matter, I think
- 50:14Speaker 3: she and I feel this almost like this burden that
- 50:18Speaker 3: we've got to joining join him and whatever it is
- 50:21Speaker 3: that he's trying to do, because of the story, because
- 50:24Speaker 3: of what it is that He's done in our life
- 50:27Speaker 3: and what we don't want to do. It's interesting when
- 50:30Speaker 3: uncertainty happens. I think we all have this propensity wherever
- 50:35Speaker 3: there's a contradiction, we'll set up an opposition to it.
- 50:39Speaker 3: Like if there's something contradicts our certainty, like with COVID
- 50:42Speaker 3: for example, it's a contradiction in our certainty, so we go, well,
- 50:46Speaker 3: it's a conspiracy theory or it's a political agenda we have.
- 50:50Speaker 1: We there's something in us that has to make reconcile
- 50:53Speaker 1: everything with our worldview correct, otherwise we feel like we're crazy. Right,
- 50:59Speaker 1: But if our worldview is too small to reconcile everything
- 51:03Speaker 1: with the problem is our worldview, and for Christians that
- 51:07Speaker 1: oftentimes intersects, that's a problem with our theology.
- 51:10Speaker 2: So this is such a big deal. I don't want
- 51:11Speaker 2: to interrupt you.
- 51:12Speaker 3: No, the only the only way I would end is
- 51:15Speaker 3: like I've found myself over the last So this is
- 51:18Speaker 3: our tenth my tenth week out of the hospital. The
- 51:21Speaker 3: last two weeks I've been looking and re examining the
- 51:24Speaker 3: story of Job. Not that I was anywhere close to
- 51:28Speaker 3: job well, but.
- 51:30Speaker 2: It felt it feels very jobish.
- 51:32Speaker 3: To feel very jobish, or my dad would say jobbish, jobbish.
- 51:37Speaker 3: But one interesting thing about that story. In the epilogue,
- 51:42Speaker 3: Job says something to God that I haven't gotten over.
- 51:46Speaker 3: He said, I have heard about you for a long time,
- 51:50Speaker 3: but now I've seen you with my own eyes. That's
- 51:55Speaker 3: where I kind of feel like we are, Like I've
- 51:58Speaker 3: heard about all this, but now I've seen him with
- 52:02Speaker 3: my own eyes. Why would I trust anyone but him?
- 52:07Speaker 3: Because he's the only thing that doesn't move, He's the
- 52:10Speaker 3: only thing that doesn't change. And he's really the one
- 52:14Speaker 3: working this in and through us for his own good.
- 52:18Speaker 3: You know, Paul says that it works together for good.
- 52:20Speaker 3: He doesn't say that everything is good. Not one time
- 52:23Speaker 3: have we asked. Not because we're more spiritual than anybody,
- 52:26Speaker 3: but I haven't asked.
- 52:28Speaker 4: Why me?
- 52:29Speaker 3: I'm like, okay, how do we make this matter? Because
- 52:33Speaker 3: she said it best like I'm and that's probably the
- 52:37Speaker 3: hardest part for me, is why am I still alive
- 52:41Speaker 3: and all these people who have every reason to be
- 52:44Speaker 3: alive have passed away. I don't think God made that happen.
- 52:49Speaker 3: He just wants us to make it matter. That's that's
- 52:52Speaker 3: kind of probably where we've landed now.
- 52:54Speaker 2: That's that's.
- 52:57Speaker 5: That's a big thought we ended up framing it. I'm
- 53:01Speaker 5: sure because as we left the hospital, all the nurses
- 53:04Speaker 5: and doctors signed it and wrote like a note to him.
- 53:07Speaker 5: And for us it's become like our twelve stones, and
- 53:12Speaker 5: it's I don't ever want to forget two things.
- 53:17Speaker 6: What God did and then what.
- 53:20Speaker 5: These this population of doctors and nurses, just the human
- 53:26Speaker 5: decency that they loved us so well and cared for
- 53:30Speaker 5: us so well, that helped create the miracle.
- 53:34Speaker 3: And if we're not careful. I've said this in a
- 53:38Speaker 3: couple of interviews. I think it's a Romanian play right,
- 53:41Speaker 3: Romanian French playwright that says an over explanation separates us
- 53:45Speaker 3: from astonishment. And we are a culture that has to
- 53:48Speaker 3: have an explanation for everything, and there's just no explanation
- 53:54Speaker 3: except God. There really isn't. And the faith of people
- 53:59Speaker 3: who put their feet to the what they believed in.
- 54:03Speaker 1: Well, I don't know if this will feel awkward or not,
- 54:05Speaker 1: but I would like to close by giving you an
- 54:09Speaker 1: opportunity just to straight to camera address our audience. And
- 54:13Speaker 1: you've said so much you may want to repeat something
- 54:15Speaker 1: you've already said, or there may be kind of a
- 54:17Speaker 1: closing final thought. But if you were sitting over a
- 54:21Speaker 1: coffee table with our audience, either single men and women,
- 54:25Speaker 1: married men and women, seniors, high school students, college students, and.
- 54:28Speaker 2: You had your you know, here's the elevator, pitch the
- 54:32Speaker 2: elevator pitch. Yeah, this final moment.
- 54:34Speaker 1: What what do you say?
- 54:38Speaker 3: I would probably say that I think we have the
- 54:44Speaker 3: wrong job description for love. As humans were always trying
- 54:49Speaker 3: to avoid pain. As parents, we're always trying to protect
- 54:53Speaker 3: our children from pain. As friends, we're always trying to
- 54:57Speaker 3: fix each other's pain, and no wonder we always feel
- 55:01Speaker 3: like failures because life is it's the human drama, it's
- 55:09Speaker 3: pleasure and pain. And the question I would have you
- 55:13Speaker 3: wrestle with is just simply this, What are you going
- 55:16Speaker 3: to trust in when that pain happens, when your certainty
- 55:22Speaker 3: is made uncertain? Are you going to lean your life
- 55:25Speaker 3: on your own understanding, your own ability to reason, your
- 55:29Speaker 3: own ability to wrap this up and put a bow
- 55:31Speaker 3: on it? Or will you trust your life to the
- 55:34Speaker 3: only one that doesn't change, that doesn't move, and can
- 55:38Speaker 3: actually heal you of your pain, can heal you and
- 55:43Speaker 3: your hurt. The last thing I would say is that
- 55:47Speaker 3: your love for Jesus doesn't have to be perfect. It
- 55:51Speaker 3: just has to be true. It doesn't have to be perfect,
- 55:54Speaker 3: It just has to be true. So I implore you if
- 55:59Speaker 3: you're if you're not a Jesus person, you don't follow him,
- 56:03Speaker 3: would you consider what it is you're leaning your life
- 56:05Speaker 3: up against. And if you are a Jesus person, you
- 56:08Speaker 3: are you do follow in the way of Jesus. How
- 56:12Speaker 3: much are you trusting him? Are you trusting what you
- 56:14Speaker 3: know about him? Or are you really trusting him? That's
- 56:19Speaker 3: my prayer for people, that they would lean their life,
- 56:22Speaker 3: the full weight of their existence on him.
- 56:26Speaker 4: Wow.
- 56:27Speaker 2: Thank you, thank you so much.
- 56:29Speaker 6: Thank you.
- 56:58Speaker 9: So many of you guys have been praying for me
- 57:00Speaker 9: over the last month and a half as I fought
- 57:04Speaker 9: coronavirus and COVID nineteen induced heart attack. I just wanted
- 57:10Speaker 9: you to know how much my family and I appreciate it.
- 57:12Speaker 9: I am home, I'm on the men Rehabit is absolutely
- 57:15Speaker 9: kicking my tail, but it's a beautiful kind of pain
- 57:19Speaker 9: and hopefully I can see you guys soon.
- 57:22Speaker 4: We love you.
- 57:23Speaker 8: Thank you again, thanks for being Jesus to us.
- 58:00Speaker 6: Assas
