- 0:00Speaker 1: Vanderbilt leads the all time series with Texas eight wins,
- 0:03Speaker 1: the three losses, one tie. Now, they haven't played since
- 0:06Speaker 1: nineteen twenty eight, when Vanderbilt beat Texas in Dallas thirteen
- 0:10Speaker 1: to twelve, but they do have the overall series lead.
- 0:12Speaker 1: They also have what I think is the biggest eye
- 0:16Speaker 1: opening win of the season. They're forty thirty five home
- 0:20Speaker 1: win over the Alabama Crimson Tide and the back coming
- 0:23Speaker 1: up on three weeks ago. Were very pleased to be
- 0:25Speaker 1: joined by the play by play voice of the Vanderbilt
- 0:27Speaker 1: Commodores Andrew Alligretto, who joins us on the hot line. Andrew,
- 0:31Speaker 1: I appreciate the time. How are you this afternoon. I'm
- 0:34Speaker 1: doing great.
- 0:35Speaker 2: You're talking about the golden era of Vanderbilt football there
- 0:38Speaker 2: nineteen twenty eight, where the coaches and the players have
- 0:41Speaker 2: now become the names of our streets and buildings.
- 0:45Speaker 3: That for sure is the golden.
- 0:46Speaker 1: Era, no doubt about it.
- 0:49Speaker 3: Yet.
- 0:49Speaker 1: I would imagine these days are pretty exciting times there
- 0:53Speaker 1: in Nashville, aren't they? After not only the win over Alabama,
- 0:57Speaker 1: but I went over Virginia Tech certainly had a shot
- 1:01Speaker 1: to knock off Missouri, a top ten ranked team lost
- 1:04Speaker 1: in overtime. You had to win the road win at
- 1:06Speaker 1: Kentucky Gamming. Folks are really seeing the difference that Clark
- 1:10Speaker 1: Lee is making now in his fourth season there.
- 1:14Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a really significant season, Craig for sure.
- 1:16Speaker 2: First off, it's great to do an interview with you
- 1:19Speaker 2: guys and talk with you guys as conference members. It's
- 1:22Speaker 2: really really fun. I genuinely enjoy this. It's been a
- 1:26Speaker 2: special season so far. The Alabama game, no doubt eye opening.
- 1:31Speaker 2: It's both Clark Lee, but it's all of the changes
- 1:33Speaker 2: that clark made in the offseason, bringing Jerry Kill and
- 1:37Speaker 2: Tim back from New Mexico State, and obviously Diego Pavia,
- 1:41Speaker 2: who you know, I've kind of joked a bunch that
- 1:44Speaker 2: he's kind of a self made SEC starting quarterback. Like
- 1:47Speaker 2: he didn't he didn't go to any of the Elite
- 1:50Speaker 2: eleven quarterback camps.
- 1:52Speaker 3: If he showed up, they would have kicked him out.
- 1:54Speaker 3: They wouldn't have let him participate, right.
- 1:56Speaker 2: Like, he has made himself into a Southeastern starting quarterback.
- 2:00Speaker 2: And you know, he doesn't have the same physical gifts
- 2:02Speaker 2: as perhaps viewers are manning, but his football IQ I'd
- 2:06Speaker 2: put up there with anybody in the country. So all
- 2:09Speaker 2: of those things have been kind of the perfect combo,
- 2:13Speaker 2: at least so far for seven games.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Well, one of the things that really it kind of
- 2:17Speaker 1: warms the hearts of a lot of folks around here
- 2:19Speaker 1: is the play of Cedric Alexander. And I had a
- 2:22Speaker 1: chance to call, as did our producer Cameron, several of
- 2:25Speaker 1: his high school games when he played at LBJ and
- 2:27Speaker 1: just a great kid and was just an unbelievably special
- 2:31Speaker 1: football player in the Austin Independent School District, all time
- 2:33Speaker 1: rushing leader there, and then as the guy who calls
- 2:38Speaker 1: the state championships for television, I got pretty familiar with
- 2:41Speaker 1: Eli Stowers only long enough to see him go down
- 2:44Speaker 1: with a knee injury in the first quarter of the
- 2:46Speaker 1: championship game against Westlake and replaced by the now sometimes starting,
- 2:50Speaker 1: sometimes back up quarterback at Oklahoma. To have him knocked
- 2:56Speaker 1: out of the game in that, but then to see
- 2:58Speaker 1: him reinvent himself as a receiver has been really interesting
- 3:03Speaker 1: to watch.
- 3:04Speaker 2: I imagine this happens to you guys a time to time,
- 3:07Speaker 2: where you go play somebody and you see a bunch
- 3:09Speaker 2: of all of these really talented Texas high school football products,
- 3:14Speaker 2: but we've been overwhelmed with what Cedric has been able
- 3:17Speaker 2: to do for us. He's still growing and maturing us
- 3:19Speaker 2: running back at this level, but he was All SEC
- 3:22Speaker 2: freshman team. He led all SEC freshman running backs in
- 3:26Speaker 2: yards a season ago, and he's certainly our primary back
- 3:29Speaker 2: for sure.
- 3:30Speaker 3: And Eli Stowers is the best tight end.
- 3:33Speaker 2: That Vanderbilt has had, which I imagine that's kind of
- 3:36Speaker 2: a unique sentence for you knowing him as a quarterback,
- 3:38Speaker 2: but the best tight end Vanderbilt has had since Jordan Matthews,
- 3:42Speaker 2: who ended up playing in the NFL with a handful
- 3:45Speaker 2: of teams like that combo, and again the calculus of
- 3:49Speaker 2: Tim Back as the offensive coordinator, and the calculus and
- 3:52Speaker 2: the improv of Diego Papa, Like you're talking about four
- 3:55Speaker 2: guys that are making this offense go for sure.
- 3:57Speaker 1: Yeah, And you bring up Tim Back and that brings
- 3:59Speaker 1: us out of my face because when he was on
- 4:01Speaker 1: Tom Herman's staff here, he was always fun to visit
- 4:04Speaker 1: with and would take time to sit down with Roger
- 4:06Speaker 1: Rawlis and myself and visit with him. So it's good
- 4:09Speaker 1: to see his path working out really well. As we
- 4:13Speaker 1: visit right now with Andrew Allagreta, played by play voice
- 4:15Speaker 1: of the Vanderbilt Commodore. How about that the doors defense
- 4:19Speaker 1: and what has stood out to you about Vanderbilt's defense?
- 4:22Speaker 1: And they've been able, I know in some games they've
- 4:24Speaker 1: given up some points, but in other games they've kind
- 4:26Speaker 1: of held their water, like the Kentucky game and a
- 4:29Speaker 1: couple of the other games where they were able to,
- 4:32Speaker 1: you know, hold everything down and give the offense a
- 4:34Speaker 1: chance to put enough points up on the board to
- 4:36Speaker 1: win the game.
- 4:38Speaker 2: Well, what's one percent for sure, Craig about Vanderbilt's defense
- 4:41Speaker 2: is the fact that in his fourth year, Clarkley has
- 4:44Speaker 2: his best defensive coordinator and it's himself. Like he went
- 4:47Speaker 2: through three years into this process, he tried to delegate
- 4:51Speaker 2: the defensive coordinator role to a couple of different guys
- 4:55Speaker 2: and it wasn't clicking the way that he wanted. So
- 4:57Speaker 2: one off the changes he made in the off season
- 4:59Speaker 2: was too to install himself as the defensive coordinator. And
- 5:03Speaker 2: he's an outrageously good defensive coordinator from a Texas perspective.
- 5:09Speaker 3: Fans would be interested to know.
- 5:10Speaker 2: Of course, clark went up against coach Sark in the
- 5:14Speaker 2: twenty twenty Rose Bowl between Notre Dame and Alabama, Clark
- 5:17Speaker 2: was Notre Dame's defensive coordinator. Of course, Sark was Alabama's
- 5:20Speaker 2: offensive coordinator. Now, Alabama still won that game, but Clark's
- 5:25Speaker 2: defense that Notre Dame held Alabama twenty points below their
- 5:29Speaker 2: season average, from fifty down to thirty. So the thing
- 5:33Speaker 2: about Clark is he's an outrageously good schemer. We don't
- 5:36Speaker 2: have Notre Dame's talents, we don't have perhaps some of
- 5:40Speaker 2: the other big pieces that he's had throughout the course
- 5:42Speaker 2: of his career. But he's so good at structuring a
- 5:45Speaker 2: defense that helps reduce the weaknesses of the players and
- 5:49Speaker 2: amplify their strengths.
- 5:51Speaker 3: And we do have talent.
- 5:52Speaker 2: That's not to say that we're out there with a
- 5:54Speaker 2: bunch of dollar store pieces. It's just it's not the
- 5:56Speaker 2: same depth, it's not the same overwhelming force as athleticism.
- 6:00Speaker 3: And he's put them.
- 6:01Speaker 2: In great positions to make everybody, as he says, go
- 6:05Speaker 2: the long hard way. Like if you're going to score touchdowns,
- 6:08Speaker 2: at least the goal nine times out of ten is
- 6:10Speaker 2: to make you do it in nine, ten, eleven plays.
- 6:13Speaker 3: And that's going to plan the Vanderbilt's hands I want
- 6:16Speaker 3: to go.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Back to Diego Pave again because I watched him play
- 6:20Speaker 1: when he was playing for New Mexico State, and I
- 6:21Speaker 1: saw what he did for Jerry Kill there and he
- 6:24Speaker 1: and Eli and then getting him to that Bowl game
- 6:26Speaker 1: was just a landmark accomplishment there in Los Cruises and
- 6:29Speaker 1: win that game was something. And to hear interviews with him,
- 6:35Speaker 1: it's almost like his entire life in football, once he's
- 6:39Speaker 1: gotten beyond high school, has been playing with house money,
- 6:42Speaker 1: and that he's taking that he's taking the biggest advantage
- 6:45Speaker 1: of his attitude seems to be like, look, I'm not
- 6:47Speaker 1: even supposed to be here anyway, so I'm going to
- 6:49Speaker 1: have a lot of fun. And I guess what it was.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Texas Tech offered him a walk on position, but he
- 6:54Speaker 1: always kind of believed in himself. Let me go to
- 6:56Speaker 1: Juco and then on to New Mexico State and to
- 7:00Speaker 1: have a real refreshing attitude about being the quarterback in
- 7:04Speaker 1: the Southeastern Conference.
- 7:07Speaker 3: I think that's I think that's accurate.
- 7:08Speaker 2: I would add I'm not sure if he views it
- 7:11Speaker 2: necessarily as house house money and more as I deserve,
- 7:17Speaker 2: like I'm talented enough for this. It's it is how
- 7:20Speaker 2: large can you how large can you think of someone's
- 7:23Speaker 2: chip on their shoulder and then amplify it by about
- 7:25Speaker 2: one hundred for somebody like Diego Pavia, right like, he's
- 7:29Speaker 2: five foot ten eleven, six foot whatever.
- 7:32Speaker 3: Again, he doesn't have a massive arm.
- 7:35Speaker 2: Nobody was scouting out Volcano Vista High School for him
- 7:39Speaker 2: to play quarterback in Albuquerque. But all that did was
- 7:42Speaker 2: motivate this young man because he genuinely believes in the
- 7:46Speaker 2: most positive way that he's the best player on the
- 7:49Speaker 2: field every time he steps on. And at least from
- 7:53Speaker 2: a Vanderbilt perspective, I do think you need somebody like
- 7:57Speaker 2: that to shock the system because all of the obvious
- 8:02Speaker 2: narrative is Vanderbilt is playing from the underdog position, so
- 8:05Speaker 2: one and so forth. And you get somebody like Diego
- 8:07Speaker 2: Pavia who steps on the field and completely occupies the
- 8:12Speaker 2: oxygen of confidence and demands that everybody come with him
- 8:16Speaker 2: that in that quest. Now, he's not perfect, he has
- 8:20Speaker 2: made some missteps, he was not great versus Ball State,
- 8:23Speaker 2: he was not great versus Georgia State. But I don't
- 8:26Speaker 2: think that has waivered his confidence, and all it has
- 8:28Speaker 2: done is just allowed him to get out there with
- 8:31Speaker 2: a bigger fire burning in his stomach. I just think
- 8:34Speaker 2: he plays with this outrageous sense of like, I'm here
- 8:37Speaker 2: to prove the fact that everybody thinks I shouldn't be here.
- 8:41Speaker 2: If that's house money, that's house money, if it's a
- 8:43Speaker 2: chip on the shoulder, whatever it is. But he's out
- 8:46Speaker 2: there with this maniacal tunnel vision to prove that he
- 8:49Speaker 2: belongs in the field with everybody.
- 8:52Speaker 1: Andrew alligreta play by play voice for the Vandervelt Commodore,
- 8:54Speaker 1: is joining us here on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred
- 8:57Speaker 1: zent right. Tell folks a little bit about what the
- 8:59Speaker 1: environment's been there some long horn fans making the trip.
- 9:01Speaker 1: I know that the stadium is sold out on Saturday
- 9:06Speaker 1: as well, but folks, a little bit about what the
- 9:08Speaker 1: environment will be like for a stadium. Unless I'm completely missing,
- 9:14Speaker 1: it is still kind of undergoing some renovation right now,
- 9:17Speaker 1: isn't it.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Yeah, you can drop the kind of it's definitely still
- 9:20Speaker 2: an active construction zone. First off, it's been fun to
- 9:24Speaker 2: see longhorned fans throughout the course of the season.
- 9:26Speaker 3: This is not new for us.
- 9:27Speaker 2: Sometimes we get Georgia fans or Bama fans throughout the
- 9:29Speaker 2: course of the season because they purchased their season tickets
- 9:33Speaker 2: from Vanderbilt, and they'll show up occasionally when Vanderbilt plays
- 9:36Speaker 2: Missouri or whatever it happens to be all for the
- 9:38Speaker 2: one game that they actually wanted.
- 9:41Speaker 3: So it's been good to see them throughout the course
- 9:42Speaker 3: of the season. Yes, we are absolutely under construction.
- 9:47Speaker 2: What effectively it is is we've blown out the north
- 9:51Speaker 2: and south end zones. The north end zone it's effectively complete.
- 9:54Speaker 2: The south end zone is still an active construction site.
- 9:57Speaker 2: I think you're going to see one of the best
- 9:59Speaker 2: atmosphere for Vanderbilt football. You know, quite frankly, in twenty years.
- 10:05Speaker 2: The last time there was a Top twenty five matchup
- 10:08Speaker 2: at home for Vanderbilt was two thousand and eight, and
- 10:11Speaker 2: Vanderbilt was nineteen, Auburn was thirteen. That is the last
- 10:15Speaker 2: time you've seen ranked on rank at Vanderbilt Stadium two
- 10:19Speaker 2: thousand and eight. So it's gonna be. It's gonna be.
- 10:22Speaker 2: Texas fans will not be surprised. And you know, Nick
- 10:27Speaker 2: Sabman had his quote about the fact that there's more
- 10:29Speaker 2: of your fans than their fans at the building, and
- 10:32Speaker 2: we played that and that became a thing after our
- 10:34Speaker 2: Alabama victory, but it's gonna be sixty forty seventy thirty
- 10:40Speaker 2: Texas fans in that building.
- 10:42Speaker 3: But I think what Texas fans will end up.
- 10:44Speaker 2: Seeing is a way more engaged Vanderbilt fan base. We
- 10:49Speaker 2: have overshot our student ticket allotment by nearly double throughout
- 10:54Speaker 2: the course of this season. Like it's been a kind
- 10:57Speaker 2: of a cattle fraud to get students to engage age
- 11:00Speaker 2: with the football program for obvious reasons.
- 11:03Speaker 3: Some of it the success on the field.
- 11:04Speaker 2: Some of it is just like the intellectual makeup of
- 11:07Speaker 2: the student body, Like you know, some of them are
- 11:09Speaker 2: just not going to be engaged with what happens on
- 11:11Speaker 2: a football field on a Saturday.
- 11:13Speaker 3: But they have showed up in a big way.
- 11:15Speaker 2: And I just think Texas fans are going to see
- 11:17Speaker 2: a very passionate, passionate Black and Gold section to go
- 11:21Speaker 2: right up against what will be a very very upsure,
- 11:24Speaker 2: loud and passionate bur doorm steps.
- 11:26Speaker 1: Hey, Andrews, is are the broadcast boots under construction as well?
- 11:32Speaker 3: You joke, but I will say fingers crossed.
- 11:37Speaker 2: I had a small panic attack the week leading up
- 11:40Speaker 2: to the Alabama game because I showed up on the
- 11:42Speaker 2: Sunday beforehand, and there was a bunch of buckets out
- 11:45Speaker 2: collecting rainwater because there had been a leak in the
- 11:47Speaker 2: press pot.
- 11:50Speaker 3: So no, technically.
- 11:52Speaker 2: They're not under construction. I will say your view is
- 11:56Speaker 2: really good. I don't know what it is obviously at
- 11:58Speaker 2: Texas because I've never been there. But in terms of
- 12:01Speaker 2: like vantage points, you're going to have a lovely perch
- 12:04Speaker 2: to call the game. You're not going to be ten
- 12:06Speaker 2: miles away, you're.
- 12:07Speaker 3: Not in the end zone. But you know there might
- 12:09Speaker 3: be a little water damage from a league about two
- 12:11Speaker 3: weeks ago. So as long as you're cool with that, yeah,
- 12:15Speaker 3: we can live with that. We can definitely live with that.
- 12:17Speaker 1: Hey, Andrew, I greatly appreciate you taking the time to
- 12:20Speaker 1: join us today. I look forward to seeing you on
- 12:23Speaker 1: Saturday at the stadium and it ought to be a
- 12:26Speaker 1: lot of fun. Thanks again for taking some time.
- 12:28Speaker 3: Today, of course, it's a pleasure. All right.
- 12:30Speaker 1: That's Andrew Alligh rather play by play voice of the
- 12:33Speaker 1: Vanderbilt Commodore's all right, coming up, we're going to have
- 12:37Speaker 1: some more coming up from our colleague Will Matthews visiting
- 12:43Speaker 1: with another Longhorn. It'll be Jaye Bluemom. We continue on
- 12:47Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone
