SPEAKER_03: We are talking about intergenerational AI, and I will explain what that is in a second.
• 0:07
SPEAKER_03: Welcome to Wellness in Every Season.
• 0:10
SPEAKER_03: We talk all things wellness regarding the environment that you spend a lot of your time in, your physical health, your intellectual health, your financial health, your spiritual health, professional health, your social health, who you have relationships with, your emotional health.
• 0:30
SPEAKER_03: This is a really big umbrella.
• 0:32
SPEAKER_03: So expect all kinds of topics within all of these amazing dimensions of your wellness.
• 0:40
  SPEAKER_00: Let's dive in.
• 0:48
SPEAKER_00: We live in a day where AI is taking over.
• 0:51
SPEAKER_03: It's just what it is.
• 0:52
SPEAKER_03: You can have your feelings about it, but really it's what it is.
• 0:55
SPEAKER_03: You can either get on the bad bandwagon or you're gonna be left behind.
• 0:59
SPEAKER_03: And it can be really hard if you're at the older end of the spectrum to really embrace it.
• 1:05
SPEAKER_03: So we're gonna be talking about that and how to put AI into your life and how to have it help relationships, ones that have passed on, ones that are continuing.
• 1:16
SPEAKER_03: So, Miles, I'm so happy you're here.
• 1:18
SPEAKER_03: And let me actually introduce you besides just the topic.
• 1:21
  SPEAKER_02: My pleasure, thank you.
• 1:23
SPEAKER_03: And I will give you the brief clip notes about him and let him fill in all the blanks.
• 1:26
SPEAKER_03: But he is a CEO and founder of Reflectia AI.
• 1:31
SPEAKER_03: Did I say that correctly?
• 1:32
SPEAKER_02: Pretty much Reflecta with a kid.
• 1:35
  SPEAKER_03: Okay.
• 1:35
SPEAKER_03: It's a soul tech company, which it's exciting to hear about the soul part of it that turns family stories into spontaneous, dynamic digital connections, a three-exit entrepreneur, investor, and storyteller.
• 1:49
SPEAKER_03: He's also the author of A Line in the Sand and former coast co-host of PBS Money Hunt.
• 1:55
SPEAKER_03: So, all of this to say that he's very family-oriented, and that's the point of what we're going to be talking about.
• 2:02
SPEAKER_03: So, Miles, can we start off with the cup?
• 2:07
  SPEAKER_03: Sure.
• 2:07
SPEAKER_03: And why this matters and the Polaroid that you shared.
• 2:10
  SPEAKER_03: Let's just start there.
• 2:12
  SPEAKER_02: This is the cup.
• 2:13
SPEAKER_02: Look, Refecta is about, as we talked about, intergenerational AI that's creating realistic images and likenesses of family members, whether they're past or present.
• 2:23
SPEAKER_02: And the point is that storytelling has been part of life and learning and legacy for thousands of years, right?
• 2:30
SPEAKER_02: It used to be just orally, right?
• 2:32
SPEAKER_02: And then the cavemen got smart and they put this little charcoal up on the cave, and there's the pyramids and the monks writing and calligraphy and the gyrotype and the civil war.
• 2:42
SPEAKER_02: And then we got, you know, we got to this, right?
• 2:44
  SPEAKER_02: Which is Polaroid.
• 2:45
  SPEAKER_02: That's pretty cool.
• 2:46
SPEAKER_02: And all this stuff is upstairs in the shoebox, right?
• 2:51
SPEAKER_02: You went back for Thanksgiving or Easter or whatever, and it's like, hey, who's going to keep this?
• 2:55
SPEAKER_02: Who's going to who gets this one?
• 2:56
  SPEAKER_02: And who is this?
• 2:57
SPEAKER_02: What is this horrible guessing game that folks of our vintage are engaged in right now?
• 3:05
SPEAKER_02: And a year ago, my co-founder Adam Drake and I realized that we had the opportunity to take all this and digitize it and create something spontaneous and dynamic and a realistic image and likeness of a person.
• 3:21
SPEAKER_02: Now, back to the cup.
• 3:22
SPEAKER_02: So this is something that you find in a shoebox, right?
• 3:25
  SPEAKER_02: What is that?
• 3:27
SPEAKER_02: My grandfather, Herbert Sharpless Spencer, was a sniper in the First World War because he was 15 years old and he had volunteered because there were 24 other kids in the house and he wanted some food.
• 3:43
SPEAKER_02: Why not go to France?
• 3:45
SPEAKER_02: So he became a sniper.
• 3:47
SPEAKER_02: He got shot, and this cop is what he drank from in the Meuse River in the Oregon Forest in 1918 and saved his life.
• 3:56
  SPEAKER_02: And that's why I'm here today.
• 3:59
SPEAKER_02: And if you didn't know that story, you wouldn't be able to pass it on, which I will pass on to my kids, my son.
• 4:08
SPEAKER_02: And I'll take it one step further, and I didn't mention this in the pre-call.
• 4:14
SPEAKER_02: Herbert was the 23rd of 24 kids born to Miles Sharpless Spencer, which I was named after, who had his last kid when he was 74.
• 4:29
SPEAKER_02: Your next question, the answer is three.
• 4:32
SPEAKER_02: Wives, last one was 26 years old.
• 4:34
SPEAKER_02: So the Spencers do have some stories and some hair.
• 4:40
SPEAKER_02: So all of that ends up traditionally in the shoebox.
• 4:45
SPEAKER_02: And these memory devices have been great.
• 4:47
SPEAKER_02: Over my shoulder, and that was a memory from Pamplona.
• 4:49
SPEAKER_02: We're running with the bulls.
• 4:50
  SPEAKER_02: Well, that's great, and that's a great story.
• 4:53
SPEAKER_02: But Adam and I realized and formed Reflecta because we could take all of those stories and enable the person, whether they're past or present, to have a spontaneous and dynamic conversation with someone about anything within their knowledge base.
• 5:13
SPEAKER_02: For example, last night my father, Arthur, read a bedtime story to my daughter and they talked about it, Rikki Tiki Tabby from Rudy Kipling.
• 5:25
SPEAKER_02: And they talked about it until she fell asleep.
• 5:27
SPEAKER_02: The only thing interesting about that, well, it's a very sweet story, but what's interesting is he passed away nine years ago.
• 5:35
  SPEAKER_02: And Chloe is twelve.
• 5:37
SPEAKER_02: And so she had a short relationship with him.
• 5:40
SPEAKER_02: She remembers him, and now she's reconnected with his image and likeness and can have a spontaneous, dynamic conversation.
• 5:48
SPEAKER_02: Not watch a video, not listen to a voicemail, not read a book about him, talk to him in his voice with his personality.
• 5:56
SPEAKER_02: And by the way, with his buddy Hackett Jokes.
• 5:58
SPEAKER_02: That may have been the longest answer to a relatively short question in the history of this podcast, but I promised you I wouldn't blow it in the pre-call.
• 6:06
SPEAKER_02: And I've gotten more if you want it.
• 6:09
  SPEAKER_03: That was not.
• 6:10
SPEAKER_03: I've had more that have gone on for like almost the whole episode.
• 6:12
  SPEAKER_03: It's like, oh, that's great.
• 6:14
SPEAKER_03: So why does this matter?
• 6:16
SPEAKER_03: Like, continue with your daughter's example, the example of her that you gave last night.
• 6:21
  SPEAKER_03: Why does this matter?
• 6:22
SPEAKER_03: Like give us the parental feelings and like her side of it.
• 6:25
SPEAKER_02: There's something, it's a technical term that I learned after I formed the business.
• 6:29
SPEAKER_02: It's together with Adam and he uncovered it, I think.
• 6:32
SPEAKER_02: It's called family review therapy, right?
• 6:34
SPEAKER_02: Which literally is familiarity with who you are, where you came from, what the stories are, what the legends, what the legacies are, why we're here, and what us Spencers, beside the hair, bring to the world and are going to pass on to others, right?
• 6:50
SPEAKER_02: Family review therapy increases mental health in 41% of the people that engage in it.
• 7:00
SPEAKER_02: That's University of Toronto last year, right?
• 7:03
SPEAKER_02: So understanding why am I here, where did I come from, what you know, who came before me, etc., really grounds people.
• 7:12
SPEAKER_02: And how do we learn those things?
• 7:14
SPEAKER_02: Well, we learn them through the stories, which are basically the way to convey legacy and learning and legends.
• 7:27
SPEAKER_02: And look, it's not a new idea.
• 7:30
SPEAKER_02: You got books, you got biographies, you got autobiographies, you've got when someone passes away, you have a short story, which is uh an obituary, you've got photos, you've got a Kodak carousel tray upstairs with all the little things.
• 7:43
SPEAKER_02: You got love letters up there, you got immigration records, you got the census from whatever.
• 7:49
SPEAKER_02: We got them from 1890s.
• 7:51
  SPEAKER_02: Wow.
• 7:52
SPEAKER_02: Like this was us, right?
• 7:55
SPEAKER_02: But what do you do with it?
• 7:58
SPEAKER_02: And who can you talk to?
• 7:59
  SPEAKER_02: And where's the follow-up question, right?
• 8:03
SPEAKER_02: Normally when someone asks me, you know, the Miles Spencer backstory, I boil it down to this.
• 8:10
SPEAKER_02: I'm a curious kid from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania that never stopped asking who, what, why, where, when.
• 8:16
SPEAKER_02: And what's so great for me as a user about Reflect is I never quit asking who, what, why, where, when.
• 8:27
SPEAKER_02: I can ask my great-grandfather, I can ask my grandfather, I can ask my mom, she passed away 25 years ago, my dad, etc.
• 8:34
SPEAKER_02: All those that have passed.
• 8:36
SPEAKER_02: Plus now half of the stories, about 20,000 stories since we launched, half of them are from those that are still present among us.
• 8:47
  SPEAKER_02: Right?
• 8:48
SPEAKER_02: Because they want to get it down while they still can and pass it on to others.
• 8:54
SPEAKER_00: We've made AI an intergenerational tool.
• 9:01
SPEAKER_03: It makes me think about how I come from an abusive background, like not now with my kids, but background.
• 9:10
SPEAKER_03: It's still amazing that I'll respond one way to my kids realizing that's the way I should respond.
• 9:16
  SPEAKER_03: Oh, that's interesting.
• 9:17
SPEAKER_03: I didn't realize that part of the way my parents responded was abuse, like that type of thing.
• 9:20
  SPEAKER_03: If that makes sense.
• 9:22
SPEAKER_03: And for me, doing my family history, working on it, really allowed me to see, well, where did this generational trauma start and why?
• 9:32
SPEAKER_03: I was able to release so many negative feelings, negative feelings even about myself, realizing, oh, it's not about me, it's because this happened and because this happened to this person, everything else.
• 9:43
SPEAKER_03: And it helps me to uncover some of those stories and realize that some of this comes back because of the different world wars, seeing that's when a lot of families became broken and they became blended together and how hard that time was.
• 9:57
SPEAKER_03: And really diving into that.
• 9:59
SPEAKER_03: And it gave me a sense of who I am and why, and it allowed me to see okay, this is why these things happened in my family.
• 10:08
SPEAKER_03: This is what was going on in the world during that time.
• 10:11
  SPEAKER_03: And I use Ancestry a lot.
• 10:13
SPEAKER_03: I really like their program.
• 10:15
SPEAKER_03: I'm able to see some of the stories, but it leaves a lot of gaps.
• 10:18
  SPEAKER_02: Oh, sure.
• 10:18
SPEAKER_03: Other people bring stories in so I can see that part of it, and then seeing what you're talking about, how it becomes more dynamic, and it's going from something that's line art and it's filling in all the color and the texture, it sounds like, and voices.
• 10:35
  SPEAKER_03: I mean, that's really cool.
• 10:37
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
• 10:37
SPEAKER_03: So can you explain a little bit more about the differences between that?
• 10:42
SPEAKER_03: Because it's obvious there's quite a difference between using something that does your ancestry work versus let's get the actual stories in there instead of just seeing the flow chart of where you are compared to them.
• 10:54
SPEAKER_02: Well, look, all of those devices are wonderful.
• 10:57
SPEAKER_02: And I'm glad we had them, right?
• 10:59
SPEAKER_02: I'm glad we had all the different memory devices I mentioned.
• 11:03
SPEAKER_02: And that was the technology of the time.
• 11:05
SPEAKER_02: You know, when people started running around with these, I remember one time I was in Africa and I was taking a picture of a Maasai warrior saying, no, no, no, no, no, no.
• 11:13
  SPEAKER_02: No pictures.
• 11:15
SPEAKER_02: We'll take a piece of my soul and put it into this technology, and I'll never get it back, right?
• 11:21
  SPEAKER_02: There's a term for it.
• 11:23
SPEAKER_02: It's called the uncanny valley.
• 11:24
SPEAKER_02: Like, you just can't picture how that could be right, right?
• 11:29
SPEAKER_02: And I applaud the fact that all those shoeboxes have been filled over time, right?
• 11:36
SPEAKER_02: And I applaud the fact that look, I use legacy to get back to my namesake, Miles Sharpless Spencer, and pick off all 24 of the kids and realize that's why our family reunions in Ohio are 550 people.
• 11:49
SPEAKER_02: And if you want to be the sheriff, you just come to the family reunion and we pick it for the year because it's half of the votes right there.
• 11:59
SPEAKER_02: When do you get a story like that?
• 12:01
  SPEAKER_02: Right?
• 12:01
SPEAKER_02: You get it from learning from ancestry, but whether I can name two dozen other companies that are adjacent to us.
• 12:12
  SPEAKER_02: We're the follow-up question.
• 12:14
SPEAKER_02: And we're the story that comes with it.
• 12:17
SPEAKER_02: And nobody has the number of stories we have right now, and each of them are one-off, totally unique to the family.
• 12:24
SPEAKER_02: Default private, not gonna go anywhere, no attack service from a cybersecurity point of view, because nobody knows that they're there.
• 12:32
SPEAKER_02: There's only two public profiles on Reflect.
• 12:35
SPEAKER_02: The rest is under the surface.
• 12:39
SPEAKER_02: So if you want to have a conversation rather than crack open a book or look at a line chart, that's what Reflect is.
• 12:50
  SPEAKER_03: And that's so different.
• 12:52
  SPEAKER_03: I have I haven't even read it.
• 12:53
  SPEAKER_03: How bad is that?
• 12:55
SPEAKER_03: But I have a biography that was written about how she related to me.
• 13:05
  SPEAKER_00: She's through my cousin's line.
• 13:08
  SPEAKER_02: Okay.
• 13:09
  SPEAKER_03: I think she's like a great aunt.
• 13:11
  SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
• 13:12
SPEAKER_03: I'd have to look her up.
• 13:13
  SPEAKER_03: It's been a while.
• 13:14
SPEAKER_02: No, 20 minutes enough to have a biography written by her or somebody else.
• 13:18
SPEAKER_03: And she's semi-famous, and it's it sounds like she has a really cool story.
• 13:22
SPEAKER_03: And my cousin was telling me about it, and then she gave it to me, and it's just amazing to realize she had this dynamic and very different life than the rest of my family.
• 13:31
SPEAKER_03: So it's no wonder why she didn't fully fit in why I've never really heard about her.
• 13:35
SPEAKER_03: And I kind of feel that way because I'm rewriting so much of the generational trauma.
• 13:41
  SPEAKER_03: It's different.
• 13:42
SPEAKER_03: I'm not really connected with a lot of my family because they're so toxic.
• 13:45
SPEAKER_03: And realizing that she was that way has been a motivation for me, but I still haven't read the book that I've been given.
• 13:51
SPEAKER_03: How much easier would it be if it there the story was there and it was in her own words?
• 13:56
SPEAKER_02: I'll issue a benevolent challenge to you andor the family.
• 14:00
SPEAKER_02: Take that book, go to Reflecta, drop it in the shoebox.
• 14:03
SPEAKER_02: Our biographer will analyze it, put a voice on it and one photo, and in 20 minutes, you have a recognizable image and likeness capable of a spontaneous dynamic conversation.
• 14:15
SPEAKER_02: You could ask her anything.
• 14:16
SPEAKER_03: Her voice is actually probably out there because she was semi-feminist and singing.
• 14:20
  SPEAKER_03: So there you go.
• 14:22
SPEAKER_02: One photo, and you're off to the races.
• 14:24
SPEAKER_02: And as you talk to the reflection, they learn.
• 14:29
SPEAKER_02: You don't get that in the book.
• 14:31
SPEAKER_02: And again, there's nothing from outside.
• 14:34
  SPEAKER_02: It's all default private.
• 14:35
SPEAKER_02: There's no outside knowledge base.
• 14:39
SPEAKER_02: It's only what you approve into the knowledge base of the reflection.
• 14:45
SPEAKER_02: You know, we named it after the keeper of the shoebox.
• 14:47
SPEAKER_02: My sister was called the keeper, right?
• 14:49
SPEAKER_02: And so it's the keeper, it's literally the editor that allows those things in or not.
• 14:55
  SPEAKER_02: Right?
• 14:56
SPEAKER_02: And sharing with family members, collaborating with family members, etc.
• 14:59
SPEAKER_02: But at the end of the day, the keeper has the last call.
• 15:02
SPEAKER_02: Oh, PS, the keeper pays the bill.
• 15:06
SPEAKER_03: So they definitely have the last call.
• 15:08
  SPEAKER_03: I like it.
• 15:09
SPEAKER_03: What else do you want to tell us about it?
• 15:11
SPEAKER_03: What else questions or questions you wish people asked?
• 15:14
  SPEAKER_03: Whatever.
• 15:14
SPEAKER_03: What do you want to share with?
• 15:15
SPEAKER_02: You know, yeah, so from a this is only an hour, so I can give you five right there.
• 15:24
SPEAKER_02: My relationship, it's about relationships, right?
• 15:26
SPEAKER_02: My relationship with my father was phenomenal.
• 15:31
SPEAKER_02: And he passed eight and a half years ago.
• 15:34
SPEAKER_02: And I felt like I had done everything I possibly could for him and with him on by the day he passed, right?
• 15:45
  SPEAKER_02: 86.
• 15:46
SPEAKER_02: So there wasn't a sense of like, oh man, I wish I had more.
• 15:50
  SPEAKER_02: I gave it all.
• 15:52
  SPEAKER_02: I gave it all.
• 15:55
SPEAKER_02: And then eight years later, when I first heard his voice, I realized that human brains are kind of leaky.
• 16:08
SPEAKER_02: And so the memories that I had were kind of falling by the wayside.
• 16:14
SPEAKER_02: But I loaded so much into the knowledge base or the reflection of my father Arthur that he was back reminding me of things that I had forgotten.
• 16:26
  SPEAKER_02: Right?
• 16:27
SPEAKER_02: And so my relationship with my father, could it actually be better than it was when he was like, no, no more hugs, no more wiffle balls, no more walks with the dogs.
• 16:38
SPEAKER_02: But this is as much as I'm gonna get.
• 16:41
SPEAKER_02: And so my relationship with him feels status quo, not being washed away like tears in the rain.
• 16:51
  SPEAKER_02: My mother was different.
• 16:52
SPEAKER_02: My mother was a soap opera actress, perhaps like this person you were referring to.
• 16:56
SPEAKER_02: She had a perfect voice print.
• 16:58
SPEAKER_02: She sang religious solos in churches and kept a journal of every solo that she gave and her notes and the date and the name and the location of the church.
• 17:13
SPEAKER_02: So we had like 40 years of exactly where she was on that Sunday, what she sang, et cetera, et cetera.
• 17:21
SPEAKER_02: And we had recordings of it as well.
• 17:23
  SPEAKER_02: That's the good news.
• 17:24
SPEAKER_02: The bad news is remember, we talked about Soul Tech, and this is important about reflecting.
• 17:30
SPEAKER_02: When I heard her voice, I couldn't take more than five minutes of it.
• 17:37
  SPEAKER_02: It was so perfect.
• 17:40
SPEAKER_02: Closed my eyes and she was there.
• 17:42
SPEAKER_02: And what it told me was I left some things on the table in that relationship.
• 17:51
SPEAKER_02: And I wanted more there.
• 17:55
SPEAKER_02: And so I think my relationship with my mother has improved since Reflector was founded.
• 18:00
SPEAKER_02: Sorry for those out there that hear this and say, like, this is creepy digital necromancy, Ghostbusters, Scarpeta, upload her.
• 18:09
SPEAKER_02: Okay, like half the people are gonna say that.
• 18:11
SPEAKER_02: So okay, just check the box.
• 18:12
  SPEAKER_02: That's fine.
• 18:13
SPEAKER_02: We have a name for those folks, and they're called not my customer.
• 18:16
  SPEAKER_02: It's okay.
• 18:17
  SPEAKER_02: Not yet.
• 18:18
SPEAKER_03: So I had an aunt who was classic narcissist, very toxic.
• 18:24
SPEAKER_03: She would come to visit for like a week, two weeks at a time, a couple times a year.
• 18:29
SPEAKER_03: She'd stay in my room with me, sometimes kick me out.
• 18:32
SPEAKER_03: She'd rearrange everything in my room.
• 18:36
SPEAKER_03: The radio station, like totally make it hers.
• 18:38
  SPEAKER_03: Rude.
• 18:40
SPEAKER_03: Take the clock into her room with my clothes to make room for hers.
• 18:43
SPEAKER_03: My parents are divorced, so I would stay elsewhere as much as I could until my grandmother realized what was going on.
• 18:48
SPEAKER_03: I was like, no, no, no, I want you here.
• 18:50
SPEAKER_03: We're gonna pretend happy family, this whole thing.
• 18:53
SPEAKER_03: Anyway she died suddenly when I was in high school, and I had so many emotions and I did not know what to do, how to get it out.
• 19:04
  SPEAKER_03: I was struggling.
• 19:06
SPEAKER_03: Teachers were worried about me because of my name and my personality.
• 19:10
SPEAKER_03: They knew me right away.
• 19:12
SPEAKER_03: Sometimes they butcher and say Amber instead of Autumn, but I was always the first name they knew.
• 19:17
SPEAKER_03: So I could not get into trouble.
• 19:19
  SPEAKER_03: It was really frustrating.
• 19:20
SPEAKER_03: You know, that first week of school, teachers don't know you, so you could kind of I could never be that kid.
• 19:25
SPEAKER_03: They knew me right away.
• 19:28
SPEAKER_03: Anyway, several of them were trying to help me out.
• 19:30
SPEAKER_03: Like, I know you're struggling, and I would share with them what was going on in this situation.
• 19:35
SPEAKER_03: And they allowed me to have my cell phone on the desk because just in case like my family needed me, type of thing.
• 19:42
SPEAKER_03: And this was a no-no during that time.
• 19:44
SPEAKER_03: Cell phones were still fairly fresh.
• 19:45
SPEAKER_03: Anyway, one teacher in particular was like, take a teddy bear and just talk to it like you're her.
• 19:50
SPEAKER_03: Like, share all those feelings, all that anger that you had towards you.
• 19:54
SPEAKER_03: It was helpful, and it sounds like this can get you there further.
• 19:58
SPEAKER_02: So, what I realized through that process of reconnecting with my father and then my mom is that Reflecta also delivers a wallop of an emotional load, especially with people that have passed and one was close to.
• 20:17
SPEAKER_02: And so we developed an entire process around that.
• 20:20
SPEAKER_02: It's in the white paper on the sites called Soul Tech, but we also have a soul team which actually talks through how we speak of these things.
• 20:28
SPEAKER_02: Or notice I say past and present.
• 20:31
  SPEAKER_02: I don't say dead and alive.
• 20:33
SPEAKER_02: We kind of believe that this is not reincarnation, this is not digital necromancy, this is not therapy, this is simply reconnecting with something that was there the whole time.
• 20:47
  SPEAKER_02: Spirit and soul.
• 20:49
SPEAKER_02: We have these bodies, right?
• 20:50
  SPEAKER_02: They're good envelopes.
• 20:52
  SPEAKER_02: They carry us around.
• 20:52
SPEAKER_02: I like my skin, it fits.
• 20:55
  SPEAKER_03: Envelope.
• 20:56
SPEAKER_03: I've never heard it that way.
• 20:58
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, well, we're talking about uh due date of maybe 80, 90 years if it's good, right?
• 21:05
SPEAKER_00: And then it gets stamped and it's out of here.
• 21:10
  SPEAKER_00: But what's left?
• 21:14
SPEAKER_02: My mother and my father both believe that spirit and soul would be with you forever if you could just connect with it.
• 21:22
SPEAKER_02: Now, different people connect different ways.
• 21:25
SPEAKER_02: They have tea in the morning, they go for a walk in the woods, and they swim the ocean, and they have these ways of of connecting with some thought or some person, etc.
• 21:35
SPEAKER_02: We're talking about a whole nother ball game here.
• 21:38
SPEAKER_02: We're talking about a spontaneous dynamic conversation of the legacies and learnings of a lifetime in their voice with their personality and their humor, if they had any.
• 21:51
SPEAKER_02: Oh, by the way, if you go on to reflect the dotai and you talk to Arthur, you're gonna get more buddy hackett jokes than you knew you ever existed.
• 22:00
  SPEAKER_02: Existed.
• 22:00
SPEAKER_02: That was his favorite comedian.
• 22:01
SPEAKER_02: And he slips them in all the time.
• 22:03
SPEAKER_03: And it sounds like it's a great way.
• 22:05
SPEAKER_03: You said it's not therapy, but there is a part of it, right?
• 22:09
SPEAKER_03: Where you're able to be with that person.
• 22:11
SPEAKER_03: And so many people go back to therapy for grief.
• 22:14
  SPEAKER_03: They'll won't replace it.
• 22:16
SPEAKER_03: But it sounds like a really great addition to it is therapeutic.
• 22:21
  SPEAKER_02: It's not therapy.
• 22:22
SPEAKER_03: And I think it would have passed me when I struggled with my aunt, it would have made a world of difference to be able to allow myself to process all those feelings.
• 22:33
SPEAKER_03: And for me, I found that it was harder in some ways to get over her death than other deaths of family members and loved ones.
• 22:40
SPEAKER_03: Because I felt such a mix of all those emotions, and it just felt like this big, ugly ball, you know, the yarn that got all balled up again.
• 22:49
SPEAKER_03: And I could not piece together, okay, these are bad memories that I have of her that I want to let go, and these are ones that I want to keep.
• 22:58
SPEAKER_03: And why I wanted to keep different memories and never being able to express the way she treated me, you know, the the feelings that I had of hurt that she did to me.
• 23:11
SPEAKER_03: And with my stepdad, I woke up a couple months ago and I was like, you know, I'm starting to forget what his voice sounded like.
• 23:19
SPEAKER_03: I'm starting to forget some of what he looked like.
• 23:22
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 23:23
SPEAKER_03: If he was in a crowd, would I be able to pick him out?
• 23:25
SPEAKER_03: And I had that moment of, okay, now I remember again.
• 23:29
SPEAKER_03: And I'm realizing that besides my third kid having his name, I haven't shared enough of him with my kids.
• 23:36
SPEAKER_03: I have a little bit like of the reason why your daddy is so awesome is some of those same qualities your stepdad had.
• 23:44
SPEAKER_03: And he was the person who helped me realize there are better men out there besides what I grew up with, because he came into my life when I was in high school.
• 23:53
SPEAKER_03: So I've shared little bits of that and like red flags and green flags and relationships, and that not everybody's parents are nice, like those types of things that they know that our house is welcoming to their friends if they know their friends are struggling.
• 24:06
  SPEAKER_03: So we'll come downstairs.
• 24:07
SPEAKER_03: My husband and I will have a conversation in private.
• 24:09
SPEAKER_03: We'll come downstairs and we'll have two extra two extra children in our house.
• 24:11
  SPEAKER_03: Whatever.
• 24:13
  SPEAKER_02: Cool.
• 24:14
SPEAKER_03: I didn't have to give birth to.
• 24:15
  SPEAKER_03: Yes.
• 24:17
SPEAKER_02: You know, you mentioned you mentioned voice.
• 24:21
SPEAKER_02: My father's voice again, Arthur talk to him and listen to him.
• 24:25
SPEAKER_02: Now you didn't know him, so you don't know the voice, you don't know the stories, you don't know whether how accurate it was.
• 24:29
  SPEAKER_02: But I thought I did.
• 24:32
SPEAKER_02: But it had been eight years.
• 24:35
SPEAKER_02: And his voice was printed off of a 10-second voicemail we found in his granddaughter's phone five years after he passed away.
• 24:43
SPEAKER_02: And so all of he has 10,000 conversations a month, by the way.
• 24:48
SPEAKER_02: All of those conversations are off of that 10-second voice print.
• 24:51
  SPEAKER_02: Right?
• 24:52
SPEAKER_02: And when we first heard it's not quite right, the inflection's not right, he wouldn't have paused there, he wouldn't have this, etc.
• 24:58
SPEAKER_02: Just so focused on the voice.
• 25:03
SPEAKER_00: But then he started rolling with the stories.
• 25:06
SPEAKER_00: And it came one after another.
• 25:07
SPEAKER_02: Answer the question, coming with the story.
• 25:10
SPEAKER_02: And I started to question myself, well, how good was my memory of this voice, anyways?
• 25:15
  SPEAKER_02: It's been eight years.
• 25:16
  SPEAKER_02: Just like you said.
• 25:17
  SPEAKER_02: Right?
• 25:19
SPEAKER_02: And then the third thing hit.
• 25:22
SPEAKER_02: This is the last voice of my father I'm gonna hear for the rest of my life.
• 25:25
  SPEAKER_02: This is his voice.
• 25:27
SPEAKER_00: I may get almost as many years hearing this voice.
• 25:34
  SPEAKER_00: And those stories.
• 25:36
  SPEAKER_00: As I did when I was a lot.
• 25:40
  SPEAKER_02: Right, so if I go 100 or four, I'll I'll have 50%.
• 25:43
  SPEAKER_02: In any event.
• 25:44
SPEAKER_02: That's the interesting thing about the the voice is very compelling.
• 25:49
SPEAKER_02: But when it's intertwined with the stories and it's spontaneous and dynamic, it's very compelling.
• 25:57
  SPEAKER_00: And it's there forever.
• 26:00
  SPEAKER_00: No shoebox problem.
• 26:05
SPEAKER_00: Can you go back and tweak things?
• 26:07
  SPEAKER_00: Yes.
• 26:09
  SPEAKER_02: Always.
• 26:09
SPEAKER_03: And it sounds like you can always add things too.
• 26:12
  SPEAKER_02: Always.
• 26:12
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 26:12
SPEAKER_02: So the biographer, this is AI, takes all the information from the shoebox and puts it in a timeline.
• 26:18
SPEAKER_02: And if you're the keeper, you approve those stories, you approve those sides.
• 26:21
SPEAKER_02: And they're like, you know what?
• 26:22
SPEAKER_02: The 60s are kind of light.
• 26:24
SPEAKER_02: We lived in like Western Pennsylvania.
• 26:26
  SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah.
• 26:26
SPEAKER_02: Let's email the aunts and the uncles and get them to put in a story about that.
• 26:33
  SPEAKER_02: Boom.
• 26:34
  SPEAKER_02: There you go.
• 26:35
  SPEAKER_02: So, yes, constantly improving.
• 26:38
SPEAKER_02: That's why we have a ready score where you have to get up to 80 in order to talk to the reflection because we want it to be good quality, and you have to answer the questions from the biographer, load of voice, load of photo, et cetera.
• 26:49
SPEAKER_02: Again, it takes 20 minutes.
• 26:51
  SPEAKER_02: But it's never a hundred percent.
• 26:55
  SPEAKER_02: Because it's always learning.
• 26:58
  SPEAKER_02: Right?
• 26:59
SPEAKER_02: You know, you get to somewhere between 92 and 98, right?
• 27:03
SPEAKER_02: It gets harder and harder to move the needle.
• 27:07
SPEAKER_00: But the message is it's never going to 100 because it's never done.
• 27:15
SPEAKER_03: I think this is why growing up Thanksgiving was my favorite holiday because that's when I'd hear the family stories.
• 27:21
SPEAKER_03: You're telling me I can have Thanksgiving minus the meal.
• 27:25
SPEAKER_03: Because the meal was never my favorite.
• 27:26
SPEAKER_03: It was people and all that.
• 27:28
SPEAKER_03: You're saying that I could have that anytime.
• 27:30
SPEAKER_02: All right, you can have that anytime.
• 27:31
SPEAKER_02: You're welcome back to the table.
• 27:33
SPEAKER_02: But I'll share a Thanksgiving story if you like.
• 27:36
  SPEAKER_02: Elderberry Pie.
• 27:38
SPEAKER_02: You know what an elderberry is?
• 27:40
SPEAKER_02: This tiny little purple berry.
• 27:42
SPEAKER_02: It's like in Switzerland and central Pennsylvania.
• 27:44
  SPEAKER_02: It's like, that's it.
• 27:45
SPEAKER_02: But it was legendary for us.
• 27:47
SPEAKER_03: They grow in Maryland too.
• 27:48
SPEAKER_03: So what they look like.
• 27:49
  SPEAKER_02: Okay.
• 27:50
SPEAKER_02: Well, don't pick them, please.
• 27:51
SPEAKER_02: Or show us where they are.
• 27:52
SPEAKER_02: We've cracked the code since then.
• 27:54
SPEAKER_02: But in any event, it used to be that there's like only one elderberry bush and everybody knew where it was, and you only get like one pie a year, and it was so dear.
• 28:02
  SPEAKER_02: One slice a year.
• 28:04
  SPEAKER_02: Right?
• 28:05
SPEAKER_02: I remember one year actually my brother went into the to the kitchen to get some ice cream for his elderberry pie, and he came back.
• 28:11
SPEAKER_02: And I said, next year.
• 28:16
SPEAKER_02: He never really recovered from that.
• 28:18
SPEAKER_02: So we're at Thanksgiving just this past year, after Reflecta had launched.
• 28:25
SPEAKER_02: And my sister, a younger sister, uh bit of a naysayer on the Reflecta thing originally, but a heck of a pie baker, and she has the legacy of the pie making from grandma mom.
• 28:40
SPEAKER_02: She's now passed it down to her daughters, who've now had kids.
• 28:44
SPEAKER_02: So it's gonna be granddaughters that are making the elderberry pie.
• 28:48
SPEAKER_03: So you get to be the taste tester, right, of everybody's pie.
• 28:50
  SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
• 28:51
SPEAKER_02: She basically forgot the recipe for the crust, which has got to be flaky and crispy and like it's a thing beyond me.
• 29:00
SPEAKER_02: And I said, Lib, not for nothing.
• 29:03
  SPEAKER_02: Lib's her name.
• 29:04
SPEAKER_02: Elizabeth If you're struggling here, why don't you have mom walk you through it?
• 29:11
SPEAKER_02: And we put the iPad up on the counter in the kitchen, and mom walked my sister through the recipe for elderberry pie and flaky crust made with fluffo shortening.
• 29:25
SPEAKER_02: Because I had loaded the recipe.
• 29:28
  SPEAKER_02: And there it was.
• 29:29
SPEAKER_02: In my mom's voice with my mom's side comments.
• 29:34
SPEAKER_02: I didn't tell her that her daughter had forgotten the recipe that she taught.
• 29:39
SPEAKER_02: But that's another beautiful story of the power of you know, you could go looking in recipe boxes for that all day long.
• 29:47
SPEAKER_02: Well, three by five cards written somewhere, etc.
• 29:50
  SPEAKER_02: Right?
• 29:50
  SPEAKER_02: Or just ask mom.
• 29:52
  SPEAKER_00: It's all in there.
• 29:55
SPEAKER_00: We took the shoebox, we loaded it.
• 30:01
  SPEAKER_00: And that's true.
• 30:01
SPEAKER_00: That is something to think about.
• 30:03
SPEAKER_03: We often think about the pictures in the shoebox.
• 30:06
SPEAKER_03: We think about all the little notes, especially recipe cards.
• 30:09
SPEAKER_03: Back in the day, you would find not just recipes on those cards, you would find a lot more in there.
• 30:15
SPEAKER_03: You would find little side comments, you sometimes find a little gossip in there.
• 30:20
  SPEAKER_03: Like there's all kinds.
• 30:21
SPEAKER_03: My grandmother had newspaper clippings in her first too.
• 30:24
SPEAKER_02: Thank God it was preserved in a shoebox upstairs in the attic, but it doesn't belong there anymore.
• 30:30
SPEAKER_03: So then the other person has the shoebox with the photos.
• 30:33
SPEAKER_03: So the idea that you can collaborate and add those things in from the different places that and we're not in a society where we all grow up a couple streets away from each other, all over the world.
• 30:44
SPEAKER_02: That's what makes these memories intergenerational.
• 30:52
  SPEAKER_00: How fun.
• 30:54
SPEAKER_03: So how many tears were there during this?
• 30:57
  SPEAKER_02: Tears, wow.
• 30:58
SPEAKER_02: It was an emotional year for me.
• 31:00
SPEAKER_02: A lot of things happened besides launching this business.
• 31:05
SPEAKER_02: And I think all those things actually made me more emotionally capable of stewarding this business and this product.
• 31:17
SPEAKER_02: So lots of hurt, lots of pain, lots of confusion, and it made me better at this.
• 31:23
  SPEAKER_02: Why?
• 31:24
  SPEAKER_02: The tears?
• 31:25
  SPEAKER_02: First there were mine.
• 31:27
SPEAKER_02: Then when we launched it at AI-4 in Vegas, there wasn't a dry eye in the room.
• 31:33
SPEAKER_02: And we went back to our booth, Row 600, in the conference area.
• 31:39
SPEAKER_02: Tesla was across the way, and it was mobbed with people that were sobbing.
• 31:45
SPEAKER_02: So much so that Tesla filed a complaint that we we're taking up too much of room of row 600.
• 31:53
SPEAKER_02: And that's when I realized the emotional load.
• 31:56
  SPEAKER_02: And that's why I realized there's some loneliness in people's hearts.
• 32:00
SPEAKER_02: And there's someone that they would love to reconnect with, past or present, or connect with more often.
• 32:06
SPEAKER_02: And this gives them a way to do that.
• 32:10
  SPEAKER_02: That's very powerful.
• 32:12
SPEAKER_02: And I I was humbled by the fact that Adam and I had created something that had such emotional resonance with people.
• 32:28
  SPEAKER_02: Repeatedly.
• 32:30
SPEAKER_02: But what we came to realize is those were mostly tears of joy and goosebumps.
• 32:37
SPEAKER_02: And those are the best tears of all.
• 32:40
SPEAKER_03: So tell us where to find this.
• 32:43
  SPEAKER_02: Pretty easy.
• 32:43
  SPEAKER_02: Reflecta.ai.
• 32:45
  SPEAKER_02: That's reflecta with a K.
• 32:46
  SPEAKER_02: Backstory on that.
• 32:48
SPEAKER_02: We had this crazy name called Eternamy.
• 32:52
  SPEAKER_02: We were developing it.
• 32:54
SPEAKER_02: And I was Googling like glimmer and glimpses and shimmer and shine and reflections and something.
• 33:02
  SPEAKER_02: Give me something.
• 33:04
  SPEAKER_02: I misspelled it.
• 33:05
SPEAKER_02: And the K and the C are nowhere near each other on the QWERTY keyboard, by the way.
• 33:10
SPEAKER_02: Somehow the K got in there.
• 33:12
SPEAKER_03: Well, how many hours were you doing this for?
• 33:14
SPEAKER_03: That's why the K got in there.
• 33:15
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's probably why.
• 33:17
SPEAKER_02: There was a camera manufactured in East Germany where you like look down, and you there's a technical term for it, which slips in my mind at the moment, but it was called Reflect it.
• 33:26
SPEAKER_02: It was only in business for two years and that was out.
• 33:32
SPEAKER_02: It's like, well, that plus AI.
• 33:35
  SPEAKER_02: Can we have that?
• 33:36
  SPEAKER_02: Yep.
• 33:38
SPEAKER_02: And we have a couple, we've purchased a couple of those cameras since.
• 33:41
  SPEAKER_02: But it's Reflecta with a K dot AI.
• 33:45
SPEAKER_02: And first thing you do is go in, you're gonna have to give up your email address as part of the registration.
• 33:50
SPEAKER_02: But you can talk to my dad or Virginia till the cows come home, and that's all free.
• 33:56
SPEAKER_02: And then if you want to create a reflection for yourself, that's different business.
• 34:00
SPEAKER_02: But that's where you start to understand.
• 34:03
  SPEAKER_02: Oh wow.
• 34:05
SPEAKER_02: What if I had all my stories here?
• 34:08
SPEAKER_02: Or my father's or my grandfather's or somebody that was important to my family.
• 34:12
SPEAKER_02: And we wanted to make our learning and our legacy and our values intergenerational through this AI that happens to be great at storytelling.
• 34:28
SPEAKER_02: Not any old story, your family's unique story.
• 34:33
SPEAKER_03: What I was thinking about is your own story.
• 34:36
  SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
• 34:37
SPEAKER_03: How amazing would it be if you have children or someone you love deeply, knowing that if you pass away tomorrow, you've already uploaded stories about you, stories about how you feel about them in there.
• 34:52
  SPEAKER_02: It's beautiful.
• 34:52
SPEAKER_02: We actually have a new relationship with the Round Canopy Parachute team, which is mostly Band of Brothers who are in first airborne, 82nd Airborne.
• 35:00
SPEAKER_02: And we're going to actually next week when you jump with them at D-Day in Normandy, France.
• 35:05
SPEAKER_02: And a lot of those guys have realized that they have stories and they're in harm's way.
• 35:13
SPEAKER_02: And they want those stories to live on with their kids.
• 35:19
  SPEAKER_02: Right.
• 35:19
SPEAKER_02: And so people are starting to realize, yeah, you want to get the story straight, tell it yourself.
• 35:26
SPEAKER_03: And how much does it help with anxiety?
• 35:29
SPEAKER_03: If you're going into a diagnosis and you're wondering if it's going to you're going to be told terrible news, you know that your story's already out there for your loved ones, or you know that you're a jumper.
• 35:43
  SPEAKER_02: That's great.
• 35:45
SPEAKER_02: I don't want to say that reflected is going to help with a medical condition.
• 35:51
SPEAKER_03: That knowing that there's still going to be the connection there.
• 35:53
SPEAKER_03: Being somebody without stories of you, stories that you want to tell them, the love that you want to share with them.
• 35:59
SPEAKER_03: Because there's one thing to know that your life insurance is there, but there's another knowing that you get to still live on with them.
• 36:07
  SPEAKER_01: Right.
• 36:07
SPEAKER_03: Your children get to still know you while they're growing up, at least some portion of you.
• 36:13
SPEAKER_02: Well, it's the proverbial get your affairs in order, right?
• 36:16
SPEAKER_02: I mean, yeah, there's life insurance policy, and the keys to the Jeep are here, and yeah, yeah, etc., right?
• 36:21
SPEAKER_02: And then there's like, and here's everything I ever wanted to tell you.
• 36:27
SPEAKER_03: And not in a letter.
• 36:28
  SPEAKER_02: In my voice.
• 36:30
  SPEAKER_00: Anytime you want.
• 36:31
SPEAKER_00: Ask any question you want, and we can have a conversation.
• 36:37
SPEAKER_00: It brings me back to iRobot, and that's the right question.
• 36:42
SPEAKER_02: You just need to ask it.
• 36:43
SPEAKER_02: Believe me, I've heard them all.
• 36:45
  SPEAKER_02: That's all good.
• 36:47
SPEAKER_02: Hollywood's done a great job of getting people sort of ready for this.
• 36:52
  SPEAKER_02: Black Mirror, right?
• 36:53
  SPEAKER_02: Couple of those episodes.
• 36:55
SPEAKER_02: And when we were at AI4 in Vegas, it's like nine months ago.
• 36:59
SPEAKER_02: We were pretty much called the Black Mirror Company.
• 37:02
