- 2:42Speaker 2: four East. There was an accident from one I understand
- 2:44Speaker 2: near the Montrose accident, a rollover accident. Jeff Jenkins of
- 2:48Speaker 2: a newsroom tells me that it is clear as far
- 2:50Speaker 2: as the accident goes now, but the backup is still there,
- 2:53Speaker 2: and you can imagine what the time coming in. You
- 2:55Speaker 2: know the time of morning. It is everybody trying to
- 2:57Speaker 2: get to work. So if you're in that traffic out there,
- 3:00Speaker 2: please be patient. It'll get moving here, hopefully soon. All right,
- 3:04Speaker 2: let's get in the rest of the show.
- 3:05Speaker 4: Now.
- 3:05Speaker 2: I want to talk a little theater this morning. There's
- 3:08Speaker 2: a show it's called Parade, right, and it's coming to
- 3:11Speaker 2: the Alban in Saint Albans July tenth, eleventh, and twelfth,
- 3:15Speaker 2: and then the seventeenth through the nineteenth. I I got
- 3:17Speaker 2: the cat or at least some of them here with us.
- 3:19Speaker 2: I'll just go from you to you and you tell
- 3:22Speaker 2: me your name.
- 3:23Speaker 5: Sure.
- 3:23Speaker 6: My name is Casey Murphy, and I'm the music director
- 3:26Speaker 6: for Okay.
- 3:27Speaker 7: All right, and you are I'm Sam Jenkins. I play
- 3:29Speaker 7: Missus Fagin, and you are I'm Stevie Jenkins and I
- 3:32Speaker 7: play Leo Frank.
- 3:33Speaker 2: That's the last name. Sounds oddly familiar. Yeah, I'm just
- 3:37Speaker 2: saying that. The name sounds oddly familiar, like somebody I
- 3:40Speaker 2: knew that worked here with that name or something. I said.
- 3:42Speaker 2: So one of you step up and just tell us
- 3:43Speaker 2: about the play.
- 3:45Speaker 8: So Parade is a great musical. It is based on
- 3:51Speaker 8: a true story and it takes place in Georgia in
- 3:55Speaker 8: the early nineteen hundreds, and it's a a Jewish man
- 4:00Speaker 8: named Leo Frank who works at a pencil factory and
- 4:06Speaker 8: a girl, Mary Fagan, is murdered at that pencil factory
- 4:10Speaker 8: and Leo Frank gets convicted of this murder. So it's
- 4:15Speaker 8: about his story, and there's a lot of themes of
- 4:19Speaker 8: hope in challenging circumstances, and themes of prejudice and anti
- 4:26Speaker 8: Semitism and stuff like that as well. But it's like
- 4:30Speaker 8: a really important his piece of history put into this musical.
- 4:36Speaker 2: All right, let's talk about the work. I'll bring in
- 4:39Speaker 2: the musical director for let's talk about the work that
- 4:40Speaker 2: goes into producing a production like this.
- 4:44Speaker 9: Sure, so we had a very.
- 4:48Speaker 6: Strict rehearsal schedule in terms of when to rehearse music,
- 4:52Speaker 6: when to rehearse staging. There's minimal choreography because a lot
- 4:56Speaker 6: of the story happens with movement, organized movement, and with
- 5:00Speaker 6: the music. But we devoted several weeks on end to
- 5:05Speaker 6: music alone because this show has such complicated musical material,
- 5:10Speaker 6: and then we kind of just added the staging alongside
- 5:12Speaker 6: that and made it a whole picture.
- 5:16Speaker 2: The reason I bring that up is because I think,
- 5:18Speaker 2: and I've done very very limited theater. I mean very
- 5:20Speaker 2: limited A couple of things, a couple of things in college,
- 5:23Speaker 2: but I in high school. But I will say I
- 5:25Speaker 2: don't think the average person really knows what goes into
- 5:27Speaker 2: behind the scenes the show itself. Sometimes when you get
- 5:31Speaker 2: the showtime, that's the easy part. And that's true of concerts.
- 5:35Speaker 10: You know.
- 5:35Speaker 2: I've had talked to musicians that have said the same thing.
- 5:37Speaker 2: You know, that's that's the when it's showtime and that
- 5:39Speaker 2: curtain goes up. Okay, we can breathe a little bit,
- 5:42Speaker 2: but it's leading up to it that that goes so much.
- 5:44Speaker 2: And what was it, any of you, what was it
- 5:46Speaker 2: about this particular play that made you want to bring
- 5:49Speaker 2: this to the stage of the Albun Theater.
- 5:52Speaker 7: I think that, like Stevie touched on, it's a really
- 5:55Speaker 7: important piece of history that a lot of people in
- 5:57Speaker 7: this region might not know about, you know, because it
- 5:59Speaker 7: happened a while ago in Georgia. And also, you know,
- 6:03Speaker 7: it's America two fifty so we're looking at history and
- 6:06Speaker 7: this is just kind of a different lens to look
- 6:08Speaker 7: at it through, you know, not just the Declaration of
- 6:11Speaker 7: Independence and things like that, but things that have happened
- 6:14Speaker 7: along those two hundred and fifty years as well well.
- 6:16Speaker 2: And there's a lot of history that, you know, one
- 6:18Speaker 2: reason or another, has not come to light, you know,
- 6:22Speaker 2: the years good and bad. You know, there's a lot
- 6:23Speaker 2: of good stuff also that's not been brought to light.
- 6:25Speaker 2: So we'll talk about the album theater itself, the alban
- 6:28Speaker 2: Arts Centers they called it out and it's a fantastic
- 6:30Speaker 2: facility for people that have never gone to a production
- 6:33Speaker 2: there or a concert there or whatever. It's a really
- 6:35Speaker 2: fascinating and it's a great facility.
- 6:38Speaker 9: Yeah, it's beautiful.
- 6:39Speaker 7: It used to be a movie theater on old Main
- 6:41Speaker 7: Plaza in Saint Albans, so we do six or seven
- 6:45Speaker 7: main stage productions every year as well as film series.
- 6:49Speaker 7: We have rentals, comedians come in, so it's really great.
- 6:53Speaker 7: Like community Hub they're down in Sant Albans.
- 6:55Speaker 2: Yeah, it is, and it's a very popular scene in
- 6:58Speaker 2: I know, a couple of years ago, well it's more
- 7:01Speaker 2: than a couple of years, but six years ago when
- 7:03Speaker 2: COVID was going on Landau Eug Murphy Junior used the
- 7:07Speaker 2: theater to stream his shows, and he chose the album theater,
- 7:11Speaker 2: you know, to be able to work with because you
- 7:13Speaker 2: got a fantastic sea. It's kind of like, I love
- 7:15Speaker 2: the location of it because you're right there on Old Main.
- 7:18Speaker 2: It's in the middle of town. Even when there's things
- 7:20Speaker 2: going on, like the different festivals and whatnot going on,
- 7:22Speaker 2: there's always something that's kind of like the hub of
- 7:24Speaker 2: where everything is there. So what is the age appropriateness
- 7:28Speaker 2: of this has opened all ages? Or is it the
- 7:31Speaker 2: little One's not going to mean to tell me. Who's
- 7:33Speaker 2: the ideal audience for.
- 7:34Speaker 8: These guys, So it's the show itself is RADYOPG thirteen
- 7:39Speaker 8: because the subject material is really heavy and it's deep,
- 7:44Speaker 8: so probably thirteen.
- 7:48Speaker 2: Yeah, And that's why I always like to ask that,
- 7:52Speaker 2: because I don't want you know, people, you know, bringing
- 7:54Speaker 2: the really little It's like the one you guys came
- 7:56Speaker 2: in here with you by the way, he disappeared somewhere
- 8:00Speaker 2: heaving around here somewhere that the news director. Yeah, I
- 8:02Speaker 2: think news director slash Papal jeff Chy. They had the
- 8:06Speaker 2: same hairline. I noticed that.
- 8:09Speaker 9: Take that for it.
- 8:11Speaker 2: But I just want to make sure that. And I
- 8:13Speaker 2: think that for younger people. By younger I mean thirteen, fourteen, fifteen,
- 8:17Speaker 2: from what you were telling me about this in my
- 8:18Speaker 2: research and reading about parade, they could actually learn a
- 8:22Speaker 2: lot from it, learning experience.
- 8:25Speaker 9: Definitely a conversation starter.
- 8:27Speaker 2: What did you guys learn from this.
- 8:30Speaker 9: So much?
- 8:31Speaker 7: Honestly, not just like about the historical context of the
- 8:35Speaker 7: story itself, but also like the culture.
- 8:38Speaker 9: In that time in the early nineteen hundreds.
- 8:42Speaker 6: Yeah, honestly, I think that what I learned most is
- 8:47Speaker 6: translating this story to present day and kind of asking
- 8:50Speaker 6: myself the rhetorical questions of how would I respond in
- 8:53Speaker 6: a situation to where someone is impacted by something negatively
- 8:57Speaker 6: based on stereotypes and things like that.
- 8:59Speaker 2: We had a text, uh, And I don't know if
- 9:00Speaker 2: any of you could answer. This is not wanting to
- 9:02Speaker 2: know approximately how many productions does the Alban Theater to
- 9:05Speaker 2: do you guys. I know you guys aren't involved in
- 9:07Speaker 2: every one of them, so you may not know.
- 9:09Speaker 7: Yeah, so as far as like plays and musicals, there's
- 9:12Speaker 7: usually six or seven Yeah, throughout the year. Yeah, we
- 9:15Speaker 7: have the Alban Art Center on Old Main and then
- 9:17Speaker 7: also the Alban Arts Academy, which is where we teach
- 9:19Speaker 7: classes for all ages, so we'll do some shows there
- 9:22Speaker 7: as well.
- 9:22Speaker 2: Let's talk about the classes. That's interesting talking.
- 9:24Speaker 9: Yeah, we love the alban Art's Academy. It is.
- 9:27Speaker 7: We do two semesters, like in the spring and fall,
- 9:29Speaker 7: we have classes in musical theater, acting, painting, stage makeup.
- 9:34Speaker 7: We're going to have a stage combat class coming up
- 9:36Speaker 7: this fall, and then we do summer camps as well
- 9:39Speaker 7: for K through twelve.
- 9:41Speaker 2: Do you find that a lot of younger kids in
- 9:43Speaker 2: the in the digital era are are getting interested in this?
- 9:47Speaker 9: I think so you talk about that.
- 9:49Speaker 8: No, yeah, we have there's so Sam and I teach
- 9:53Speaker 8: musical theater and there's you'll have some kids that are
- 9:57Speaker 8: there every single time, that are always there, but then
- 10:00Speaker 8: you'll have like rotating kids that are just because especially
- 10:04Speaker 8: with one of my favorite age groups because I'm a
- 10:06Speaker 8: fifth grade teacher, so the third through.
- 10:08Speaker 7: Fifth is kind of my sweet spot. But you'll just
- 10:12Speaker 7: see a bunch of different kids come through there because
- 10:15Speaker 7: I feel like that's the age where parents are getting
- 10:17Speaker 7: them to, you know, try new things, and so some
- 10:20Speaker 7: of them will find that they really really like theater,
- 10:23Speaker 7: Like with our summer camp.
- 10:23Speaker 9: We had a couple weeks ago.
- 10:25Speaker 8: We had several kids who had never done anything like
- 10:27Speaker 8: that before and they left just loving it. And so
- 10:31Speaker 8: that's really cool to see.
- 10:32Speaker 2: Where people learn more about your workshops that you do.
- 10:35Speaker 2: They're your classes.
- 10:35Speaker 7: Yeah, so if you go to Albanartcenter dot com, there's
- 10:38Speaker 7: a tab for the albn Arts Academy. The registration for
- 10:40Speaker 7: the fall is going to go up in like a
- 10:42Speaker 7: week and a half and then our Facebook page as well,
- 10:44Speaker 7: Albin Art.

- 10:47Speaker 2: parade that you're going to be doing, the times, the places,
- 10:49Speaker 2: tickets that all that stuff.

- 14:20Speaker 2: on social media about that, and what we're talking about
- 14:22Speaker 2: here is the city of South Charleston. A couple of
- 14:25Speaker 2: weeks or so ago did a time capsule, and I
- 14:28Speaker 2: want to say, what from nineteen seventy six? I think
- 14:30Speaker 2: it was from the Bison tennial year and they opened
- 14:32Speaker 2: it up. I did not see what well. I was
- 14:36Speaker 2: kind of perusing last night on social media and I
- 14:38Speaker 2: think I saw something about I'll get an answer for you.
- 14:40Speaker 2: How's that. I'll get an answer for you. If you
- 14:42Speaker 2: happen to be driving through downtown Hurricane late afternoon early evening,
- 14:46Speaker 2: you're going to see a lot of people out on
- 14:47Speaker 2: the street. It is a celebration of America two fifty
- 14:51Speaker 2: by a live reading of the Declaration of Independence. It's
- 14:55Speaker 2: going to be happening there on Main Street and Hurricane
- 14:57Speaker 2: Mayor Scott Edwards joined us to talk about it. Good
- 15:00Speaker 2: good morning, sir, welcome to the show.
- 15:02Speaker 10: Good morning, Dave. How are you doing today?
- 15:03Speaker 2: I am doing fine. By the way, do want to
- 15:06Speaker 2: say if you're planning on traveling I sixty four East
- 15:09Speaker 2: Mayor into Charleston may not want to do that right
- 15:12Speaker 2: now because we had an accident and it's still backed up.
- 15:15Speaker 2: For what we understanding, the accident's cleared, but I know
- 15:17Speaker 2: you spend all your time in the land of the
- 15:19Speaker 2: Redskins anyway, right.
- 15:21Speaker 10: I do. I try to, yes, sir, yes, sir.
- 15:23Speaker 2: With the red shirt and all all the time. I
- 15:26Speaker 2: have it on right now, of course you do. I'm
- 15:28Speaker 2: just hoping you have more than one. I really do.
- 15:30Speaker 2: I'm hoping you have more too. I too. Okay, So
- 15:34Speaker 2: tell us about this reading this on the streets of
- 15:37Speaker 2: hurricane and now you're going to do the Declaration of Independence,
- 15:40Speaker 2: a live reading on the streets of hurricane. Where did
- 15:42Speaker 2: this idea come from?
- 15:44Speaker 10: Well, David, it's called the Sharing the Spirit of America,
- 15:48Speaker 10: and it's a nationwide initiative, and it's actually done over
- 15:52Speaker 10: all all six of our time zones about America six
- 15:56Speaker 10: pm Eastern then five four three two, you know, so
- 15:59Speaker 10: it's all read at the same exact time in all
- 16:01Speaker 10: fifty states and territories, you know, two hundred and fifty
- 16:06Speaker 10: years ago. Today is when the when the people first
- 16:08Speaker 10: heard it read while it was signed on the fourth
- 16:11Speaker 10: of July. Today commemorates the first time it was you know,
- 16:14Speaker 10: read aloud to the you know, to the people, and
- 16:18Speaker 10: everybody comes together to do it, and it's a you know,
- 16:21Speaker 10: it's celebrated historic moment. You know, our freedom was declared.
- 16:24Speaker 10: I mean, this is the biggest thing our country has
- 16:26Speaker 10: ever done, other than the Bible. I can't think of
- 16:29Speaker 10: any other thing written on paper that's more important. And
- 16:34Speaker 10: and it's it's that important and we should all listen
- 16:36Speaker 10: to it. It's it's about ten minutes to hear it,
- 16:38Speaker 10: and I'll be Facebook live in it is. But it'll
- 16:41Speaker 10: be on Main Street and Hurricane, right right downtown Hurricane.
- 16:44Speaker 2: And so how many people are going to be involved
- 16:47Speaker 2: in this? I mean, is anybody that wants to show up?
- 16:49Speaker 2: Is just one person reading and house the whole thing
- 16:50Speaker 2: going to work?
- 16:52Speaker 10: Well? Right now, one person reading it, and then it's
- 16:55Speaker 10: me that wants to show up. So it's it's right
- 16:57Speaker 10: in front of Putnam County Ankle, Main Street, right in
- 17:01Speaker 10: front of seventeen seventy six books and coffee. Ashley Stinnett
- 17:06Speaker 10: just to open that up. And I've asked Ashley to
- 17:08Speaker 10: read it and he will. He will not look like
- 17:11Speaker 10: Ashley Stennett. He will look like like like some person
- 17:14Speaker 10: did two undred and fifty years ago. Well, that'll be awesome.
- 17:17Speaker 2: It's interesting that you bring that up because I was
- 17:19Speaker 2: talking to my Metro News Midday co host Amanda bear
- 17:22Speaker 2: In earlier this morning, we were talking about what I
- 17:25Speaker 2: was doing on this show and whatever, and she asked
- 17:26Speaker 2: the question, would the person be in full character? And
- 17:30Speaker 2: so I think they were planning and I'm not going
- 17:32Speaker 2: to you know, I'm not going to promise them because
- 17:34Speaker 2: I don't know what's going on in their world as
- 17:35Speaker 2: far as television goes. But I think they were interested
- 17:38Speaker 2: would someone be in character? And Ashley Stenntt's going to
- 17:40Speaker 2: be in character?
- 17:41Speaker 10: Absolutely, we do it right, you know that?
- 17:44Speaker 2: Oh yeah, it's Hurricane's yeah. Yeah. And Ashley, I've known
- 17:48Speaker 2: Ashley for a number of years. He's done a variety
- 17:50Speaker 2: of things, but he is a very accomplished actor in
- 17:53Speaker 2: his own right. Actor. He's behind the scenes on movies
- 17:56Speaker 2: and whatever. He'll do a great job. I'm sure he
- 18:00Speaker 2: sure is.
- 18:01Speaker 4: Yep.
- 18:02Speaker 10: In fact, I met with him last night about another
- 18:04Speaker 10: movie he's starting in. So but that's for another day.
- 18:08Speaker 2: All right, Well, I'll get him on it.
- 18:09Speaker 10: But but I will tell you know that the Declaration
- 18:12Speaker 10: of Independence, I mean, you know everything it says, you
- 18:17Speaker 10: know how our nation has been shaped? I mean, that's
- 18:19Speaker 10: how important this document is. I mean you know, we
- 18:22Speaker 10: separated from uh from the king and got away from
- 18:25Speaker 10: that mess. And and it's that important that people all
- 18:29Speaker 10: listen to this, you know this reading. I mean, we
- 18:32Speaker 10: are one nation under God right with liberty and justice
- 18:35Speaker 10: for all. We all know that, but we all need
- 18:37Speaker 10: to remember that. That's the that's the problem. I think
- 18:39Speaker 10: people can think it and talk about it, well, we
- 18:42Speaker 10: need to really think about what those words mean. It's
- 18:45Speaker 10: under God with liberty injustice for all, and that's so important.
- 18:49Speaker 2: Well, and I think it is worth and we talked
- 18:53Speaker 2: about this a lot last week with the America two
- 18:54Speaker 2: fifty going on that you know, everybody had a great
- 18:57Speaker 2: time and there were fireworks and celebrations. Every town. You
- 19:01Speaker 2: guys had one, Tom, I ask you about that here
- 19:02Speaker 2: in a couple monuts. But every town across America did something.
- 19:04Speaker 2: Every family got together and did something. But there's a
- 19:07Speaker 2: reason not to be not to be too sappy here, mayor,
- 19:10Speaker 2: but there's a reason why we are allowed to do that.
- 19:13Speaker 2: And I think sometimes with all of the division that
- 19:15Speaker 2: we have in America sometimes and I'm not calling on
- 19:18Speaker 2: one side, I'm saying a little bit of everybody here
- 19:20Speaker 2: as at fault. We forget that we are allowed to
- 19:24Speaker 2: have these discussions in America. We're allowed to go on
- 19:26Speaker 2: social media, we're allowed to call radio talk shows, we're
- 19:29Speaker 2: allowed to talk one with the other. But you can't
- 19:31Speaker 2: do that in every country.
- 19:33Speaker 10: A lot of countries. You can't do that at all,
- 19:35Speaker 10: a lot of countries. I couldn't be a mayor and
- 19:38Speaker 10: be able to freely say what I want. I could
- 19:41Speaker 10: say some dumb stuff right now over the air. That
- 19:43Speaker 10: would be dumb, but legally I can if I chose to.
- 19:48Speaker 10: I may not get back in office, but I could.
- 19:50Speaker 10: But in some countries it may just be the end
- 19:52Speaker 10: of my life. So I mean, we are absolutely free
- 19:56Speaker 10: in this country and people love that.
- 20:00Speaker 2: Again with the mayor of a hurricane Scott Edwards, and yeah,
- 20:03Speaker 2: and look, patriotism is really big in West Virginia. And
- 20:07Speaker 2: I have said this all along because no, no, no
- 20:10Speaker 2: state has ever given more on the battlefields per capita
- 20:13Speaker 2: than what West Virginia has. We always answer the call
- 20:16Speaker 2: to go to wars and so on and so forth,
- 20:18Speaker 2: and and serving peace time at two and defend our country.
- 20:21Speaker 2: And it really means something special here in the Mountain State.
- 20:26Speaker 10: And a lot of people don't realize that per capita
- 20:29Speaker 10: we have given more. And that's yes, that's getting sappy now,
- 20:33Speaker 10: and that that's every time I think, every time I
- 20:35Speaker 10: hear somebody say that and remind you of that, that, yes,
- 20:37Speaker 10: that his that his heart for me.
- 20:40Speaker 2: I mean, you know I've said it before the listeners. No,
- 20:42Speaker 2: I did not serve in the military. My dad did.
- 20:44Speaker 2: He was a Vietnam Vietnam vet. He died of aging
- 20:47Speaker 2: orange that he got in Vietnam, you know, after serving
- 20:50Speaker 2: his country, and it means something special to me. That's
- 20:52Speaker 2: why when you know, a couple of weeks ago, I
- 20:54Speaker 2: got a little emotional here when we were talking about
- 20:56Speaker 2: that the Traveling Wall, you know that that came into
- 20:59Speaker 2: Saint Alvens last week. And of course you guys kind
- 21:01Speaker 2: of rotate with Nitro on the on the on the
- 21:03Speaker 2: motorcycle ride, you know, the run for the Wall that
- 21:06Speaker 2: happens around in the month of May. You can't you
- 21:10Speaker 2: Valley Park there. You kind of rotate with Nitro every year,
- 21:13Speaker 2: and so it's a it's a big deal.
- 21:16Speaker 10: It's a huge deal when those when those men and
- 21:19Speaker 10: women on bikes come in and and we welcome them
- 21:21Speaker 10: into Hurricane just like Mayor case bort welcomes them into
- 21:24Speaker 10: into Nitro. It is extremely powerful when they come in.
- 21:28Speaker 10: And what I love more than anything our parents bringing
- 21:31Speaker 10: out those young kids and letting those young kids, those
- 21:35Speaker 10: you know, five, six, eight, ten twelve year olds talk
- 21:37Speaker 10: to those men and women on those motorcycles and a
- 21:40Speaker 10: lot of those men and women have our Vietnam veterans
- 21:43Speaker 10: and have served, and they tell them stories, and they
- 21:47Speaker 10: take pictures with them and they share share, you know,
- 21:51Speaker 10: other moments with them. That's the most powerful thing that
- 21:54Speaker 10: I see when Run for the Wall comes through talking.
- 21:56Speaker 2: To Hurricane Mayor Scott Edward's The Dave Island Show in
- 21:58Speaker 2: five Eddieline brought to you Alreedy by Pinnacle Consultants help
- 22:01Speaker 2: me to identify environmental concerns like as best as lad
- 22:04Speaker 2: mold and indoor quality issues and buildings all across the state,
- 22:07Speaker 2: providing inspection's testing and accredited lab services you could trust.
- 22:10Speaker 2: Check out Pinnacle Corp dot net helping you understand your
- 22:13Speaker 2: environment because what you don't know can't hurt you. Somebody.
- 22:16Speaker 2: Texas had to be perfect for MAB to have kids
- 22:18Speaker 2: read part of it. I mean, you know, maybe we
- 22:20Speaker 2: can do that in the future. I think this one
- 22:21Speaker 2: is pretty well nailed down. But no one Ashley like
- 22:23Speaker 2: I do. If somebody shows up and some child wants
- 22:26Speaker 2: to read, he probably wouldn't turn them.
- 22:28Speaker 10: Down, I'm sure, especially if they're in full gear. If
- 22:31Speaker 10: they look like there you go, somebody comes up. Yes,
- 22:35Speaker 10: if somebody shows up looking like that from two and
- 22:38Speaker 10: fifty years ago, I'm sure we can.
- 22:40Speaker 2: Make that happen. What else is going on in town
- 22:42Speaker 2: these days? I had John last week talking about the
- 22:44Speaker 2: Fourth of July celebration. But what else is keeping Mayor
- 22:48Speaker 2: Edwards and the folks excited in Hurrican these days?
- 22:51Speaker 10: Well, you know, we continue to grow our parks and
- 22:56Speaker 10: those things keep me excited. We were looking at it again.
- 23:00Speaker 10: It's not for today, but soon we'll be able to
- 23:02Speaker 10: tell you, hopefully some stuff we're going to be doing
- 23:04Speaker 10: in Hurricane some other bigger things. We you know, we've
- 23:10Speaker 10: got the pickleball courts coming soon, three more three additional
- 23:14Speaker 10: pickleball courts, And I'll tell you every weekend keeps me
- 23:17Speaker 10: busy in Hurricane At the Putnam Canny Bank Sports Complex
- 23:22Speaker 10: at Hurricane Bridge Park, we have huge, huge baseball tournaments
- 23:27Speaker 10: come into town and we have sometimes forty to fifty
- 23:30Speaker 10: sixty teams from up and down the East Coast roll
- 23:33Speaker 10: right into hurricanes, spend money, local, fill up the hotels.
- 23:37Speaker 10: More importantly, play baseball or softball at the fields. And
- 23:40Speaker 10: they love it.
- 23:41Speaker 2: Oh yeah, absolutely. And you know, Hurricane and all these
- 23:45Speaker 2: towns run who really rolled out the red carpet because
- 23:47Speaker 2: this time of year, man, good luck and trying to
- 23:49Speaker 2: get a hotel room anywhere in the Canal Valley.
- 23:52Speaker 10: Correct. Yes, it's good stuff, good stuff happening, and lots
- 23:56Speaker 10: of stuff coming in the next you know, this year,
- 23:59Speaker 10: next year in Hurricane. I mean, it continues to grow,
- 24:01Speaker 10: and we just want to continue doing things to get
- 24:04Speaker 10: our people outside, walking, riding, playing, doing all the fun stuff.
- 24:09Speaker 10: So that's a big initiative.
- 24:12Speaker 2: Well, it's a great place to be. And I mean
- 24:14Speaker 2: you got something. I mean in Putnam County in general
- 24:17Speaker 2: a little biased because I live there, but I also
- 24:19Speaker 2: love Kanaal County and all the other counties. Right now,
- 24:20Speaker 2: I just love West Virginia period. But in Putnam County,
- 24:24Speaker 2: I mean, you got some of the best schools in
- 24:25Speaker 2: the soy to West Virginia, got some of the best facilities,
- 24:29Speaker 2: low crime rate, it's a great place to call home.
- 24:31Speaker 6: You know.
- 24:32Speaker 2: I mean we're putting out the red carpet, no pun intended,
- 24:35Speaker 2: because everything you own is red for the high And.
- 24:38Speaker 10: I will tell you mentioned low crime right great, our
- 24:41Speaker 10: chief Chief Mike Mallins, his team, they do a phenomenal
- 24:45Speaker 10: job there, extremely proactive and Chief Mallins has been my
- 24:49Speaker 10: chief for just about nineteen years and he is unbelievable.
- 24:54Speaker 10: And that whole team is so proactive and that's why
- 24:57Speaker 10: there's low crime rate. They don't wait again. They take
- 25:01Speaker 10: an issheve and get it out of here. That's what
- 25:03Speaker 10: we want.
- 25:04Speaker 2: Hurricane mayor Scott Edwards. Give us all the details on
- 25:07Speaker 2: everything going on tonight. You'll start about was it five?
- 25:09Speaker 2: Is that right?
- 25:11Speaker 10: Well, starts at six o'clock. We'll be there, Yeah, we'll
- 25:15Speaker 10: be there live about five forty five or five point
- 25:18Speaker 10: fifty and it's six o'clock.
- 25:21Speaker 2: It's yeah.
- 25:22Speaker 10: And the address, by the way is two seven five
- 25:24Speaker 10: nine Main Street. I should have said that, Yeah, it's
- 25:27Speaker 10: at seventeen seventy six Books in Coffee, but it's twenty
- 25:30Speaker 10: seven to fifty nine Main Street. There's plenty of parking.
- 25:33Speaker 10: I really hope that a lot of people come down
- 25:35Speaker 10: and see it and take some photos, and I think
- 25:38Speaker 10: that'd be great.
- 25:39Speaker 2: Well, it'd be an educational experience for the kids, you know,
- 25:41Speaker 2: to bring them out there. As a texture pointed out earlier.
- 25:45Speaker 2: Now is that coffee shop that's relatively new there and
- 25:47Speaker 2: Hurricane right.
- 25:48Speaker 1: It is.
- 25:49Speaker 10: It's actually getting ready to open. It was open on
- 25:52Speaker 10: the fourth of July. It'll be open full time here
- 25:54Speaker 10: really really soon.
- 25:56Speaker 2: And actually is the owner of that Okay, all right, well,
- 25:58Speaker 2: I'll have to go down there and check it out.
- 26:00Speaker 2: He's a good friend, has been a friend for a
- 26:02Speaker 2: number of years. So again, if you can't make it tonight,
- 26:05Speaker 2: you're all about social media, so you'll be live streaming
- 26:08Speaker 2: the whole thing. But we hope to have a big
- 26:09Speaker 2: crowd out there tonight six o'clock on Main Street and
- 26:11Speaker 2: Hurricane with the reading of the Declaration of Independence Ashley Stinnett,
- 26:15Speaker 2: we'll be doing it. He'll be in full regalia, so
- 26:18Speaker 2: come on out and see it, and you may and
- 26:20Speaker 2: of course the mayor will be there as well, and
- 26:22Speaker 2: most of the town will be there. There's always something
- 26:24Speaker 2: big going on Hurricane. We appreciate you can take the
- 26:26Speaker 2: time at our schedule to join us today. Thanks a lot.
- 26:28Speaker 10: Hey, thank you my friend, every great day you as well.
- 26:30Speaker 2: Scott Edwards, the mayor of Hurricane. Again, that's all going
- 26:33Speaker 2: on tonight at six o'clock on the Main Street and Hurricane.
- 26:36Speaker 2: They are going to This is actually I've kept reference
- 26:38Speaker 2: to America two fifty, but this is actually the day
- 26:42Speaker 2: that the Declaration of Independence was red in front of
- 26:45Speaker 2: people side. I guess July fourth, but it was all
- 26:49Speaker 2: it was just, you know, it was read to the
- 26:51Speaker 2: people and post it on Facebook. I think on this
- 26:53Speaker 2: state in seventeen seventy six. Maybe I may have my
- 26:55Speaker 2: facts mixed up about that last part. Well, good check
- 26:58Speaker 2: it out. There's always a lot of things going on
- 27:00Speaker 2: Hurckcon Apparently there's a brand new coffee shop there as well,
- 27:02Speaker 2: and it's where it was a books and bruis. I
- 27:05Speaker 2: think for you know, I mean, let's face it, I
- 27:08Speaker 2: was kind of the mayor's and have said live at
- 27:10Speaker 2: him a little bit there. He's a good friend, but
- 27:12Speaker 2: he said I should have given the exact address. It's
- 27:15Speaker 2: not hard to find your way around Main Street and Hurricane.
- 27:17Speaker 2: It's pretty much one one street. It's a great place
- 27:21Speaker 2: to live. I mean, I've lived there for twelve years,
- 27:23Speaker 2: not technically in the city of Hurricane, but in Day's valley.
- 27:25Speaker 2: It's fantastic place to live. So and if you want
- 27:28Speaker 2: to find a house, good luck, because there's not a
- 27:30Speaker 2: whole lot of over there right now because everybody's continued
- 27:33Speaker 2: to move in there. But again, go check it out tonight.
- 27:35Speaker 2: They'll be reading the Declaration of Independence live on the
- 27:38Speaker 2: streets of Hurricane Main Street tonight starting at six o'clock,
- 27:41Speaker 2: and again the mayor will have it on his Facebook
- 27:43Speaker 2: page twenty four minutes away from ten but Dave Island

- 28:15Speaker 2: injured in that. I don't know that news team will
- 28:17Speaker 2: have something on that, but it's caused some slow going.
- 28:20Speaker 2: We understand, if I'm correct on this, that the accident
- 28:23Speaker 2: itself has been cleaned up. But anytime you have an
- 28:25Speaker 2: accident on I sixty four East just outside Charleston at

- 34:46Speaker 2: I put a text in a Shan Zanaga, spokesperson for
- 34:49Speaker 2: the City of South Charleston, and here is what he says.
- 34:51Speaker 2: We placed all items at the South Charleston Library for
- 34:55Speaker 2: people to look at, and the Charleston I'm sorry, the
- 34:58Speaker 2: South Charleston CBB faith book page is posting all week
- 35:03Speaker 2: on the different items that weren't in the time capsule
- 35:05Speaker 2: that must have been where I saw it last night.
- 35:07Speaker 2: They must have seen it posted on their page. And
- 35:10Speaker 2: so the new capsule is going to be placed in August,
- 35:14Speaker 2: and he says residents can go to the South Charleston
- 35:16Speaker 2: CVB website and suggest items to be placed in the
- 35:21Speaker 2: new time capsule. So there you go. How about that
- 35:23Speaker 2: for a response. So, yeah, there were several bi centennial
- 35:26Speaker 2: related items that were opened up as part of that
- 35:28Speaker 2: time capsule. They did that a couple of weeks ago,
- 35:30Speaker 2: so you can go check that out. Just to look

- 35:43Speaker 2: we glossing over the fact that under God in the
- 35:46Speaker 2: Pledge of Allegiance was put in during the nineteen fifties
- 35:48Speaker 2: because of the Red Scare and not seventeen seventy six.
- 35:52Speaker 2: I wasn't glossed over at all. I knew that the
- 35:54Speaker 2: mayor was on a roll. I wasn't going to stop it,
- 35:56Speaker 2: But yes, under God was not part of the Pledge
- 35:58Speaker 2: of Allegiance until the nineteen fifth. If these as part
- 36:00Speaker 2: of the red Scare texture is one hundred percent correct,
- 36:02Speaker 2: it was not in the original document texts. So why
- 36:07Speaker 2: are we now so afraid to call out actual traders
- 36:10Speaker 2: to the Constitution in the country who willingly and actively
- 36:13Speaker 2: work and speak against the US. Are people in our

- 36:39Speaker 2: up on the show tomorrow, you may have heard on
- 36:41Speaker 2: a newscast that the Canaw County Board is getting some gifting,
- 36:46Speaker 2: I should say, some of the facilities associated with the
- 36:50Speaker 2: old Herbert Hoover High School to a town to Clint Dennet.
- 36:53Speaker 2: We're going to get into that story a little bit
- 36:54Speaker 2: more tomorrow. Not exactly sure what that's going to look
- 36:57Speaker 2: like as of yet, but that was announced that the
- 36:58Speaker 2: Canaw County Board meeting the night. We'll talk about that
- 37:00Speaker 2: a little bit on the show tomorrow. Plus, you are
- 37:03Speaker 2: not going to want to miss this. If you watched
- 37:06Speaker 2: pro wrestling in the nineteen eighties and nineties, you certainly
- 37:11Speaker 2: remember the legendary tag team the Rock and Roll Express,
- 37:14Speaker 2: Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson. They're still wrestling. Matter of fact,
- 37:19Speaker 2: I caught a match of Ricky's on YouTube the other day.
- 37:23Speaker 2: He looks as good and Ricky. Ricky's like seventy years old. Okay,
- 37:27Speaker 2: don't tell him, don't tell his body. He's like seventy
- 37:29Speaker 2: years old. He's out there doing it just like he
- 37:32Speaker 2: did in the late nineteen eighties early nineties. Anyway, Ricky
- 37:36Speaker 2: Morton is coming to Charleston to Sam's Uptown Cafe along
- 37:40Speaker 2: with another legend they called him, the Franchise, Shane Douglas,
- 37:43Speaker 2: for a meet and greet fundraiser this Saturday afternoon, starting
- 37:47Speaker 2: at one o'clock. Now they aren't wrestling, but they're going
- 37:50Speaker 2: to be doing a meet and greet at Sam's autographs
- 37:53Speaker 2: and all the stuff that go along with that from
- 37:55Speaker 2: one to four. It's a fundraiser for the Three Bettys Foundation,
- 37:59Speaker 2: which ages aids in cancer stuff. Ricky Morton, who is
- 38:03Speaker 2: an old friend of mine. Ricky and I've known each
- 38:05Speaker 2: other for twenty twenty five years or more. He of
- 38:08Speaker 2: the Rock and Roll Express is going to join me
- 38:10Speaker 2: coming up on the show tomorrow. So you don't want
- 38:13Speaker 2: to miss that. I've carved out a nice little time.
- 38:16Speaker 2: You know. If your old school wrestling fan, me and
- 38:18Speaker 2: Ricky are gonna talk have well. I'll talk to him
- 38:21Speaker 2: on the phone a lot, but I haven't actually seen
- 38:23Speaker 2: him in person in a while, so he's not gonna
- 38:24Speaker 2: be impersonal. He's actually not coming until Saturday, but I'll
- 38:27Speaker 2: have him on the phone on the show tomorrow. Good
- 38:29Speaker 2: good friend, good good dude too, and a heck of
- 38:32Speaker 2: an athlete. I mean, at his age. Say what you
- 38:36Speaker 2: want to about wrestling. I was into business for thirty years.
- 38:38Speaker 2: I know what everybody says about it. I know the
- 38:40Speaker 2: guys are hillacious athletes, and they are incredible athletes. And
- 38:44Speaker 2: so we're going to join. Ricky's gonna join us coming
- 38:47Speaker 2: up on the show tomorrow. Coming up later today. Metro

- 38:51Speaker 2: Baron and Me, powered by Selangul Law. It's Wednesday, which
- 38:54Speaker 2: means we'll introduce you to you this week's wonderful West Virginia.
- 38:57Speaker 2: The mayor of but Cannon, Robbie Skinner, is going to
- 38:59Speaker 2: join it. They had a big economic announcement for Bucktown yesterday.
- 39:03Speaker 2: Plus it's media day for the Big twelve. We'll check
- 39:05Speaker 2: in on that. TJ will stop by. Jeff Jenkins has
- 39:09Speaker 2: the news, and of course Open Line West Virginia another
- 39:12Speaker 2: interesting story and you can read about this at the website.
- 39:14Speaker 2: I think the talk line guys are going to get
- 39:15Speaker 2: into it. We may also get into a little bit
- 39:17Speaker 2: as well. The town of Berrickville in northern West Virginia
- 39:22Speaker 2: fired their entire police department. They have no cops. It
- 39:25Speaker 2: was some kind of a match or some kind of
- 39:27Speaker 2: a going back and forth between the city council and
- 39:29Speaker 2: the police department. Police department all got canned. And the
- 39:34Speaker 2: interesting thing to me, and I don't mean to laugh
- 39:36Speaker 2: about it, was that I saw a picture on our
- 39:38Speaker 2: website and they have a picture of the police car
- 39:41Speaker 2: with a dog sitting in front of it. So apparently
- 39:43Speaker 2: the dog was the only one that didn't get fired.
- 39:45Speaker 2: He's I guess still employed here or is Sheba anyway,
- 39:48Speaker 2: So we may check in on that story as well
- 39:50Speaker 2: Metro News Midday with thirteen News in Tonight Live anchor
- 39:52Speaker 2: Amanda Baron and Me coming up at noon today powered
- 39:55Speaker 2: by Slang Go Law. I want to talk about high
- 39:59Speaker 2: school sports for just a moment before we go to break.
- 40:03Speaker 2: I was on the phone earlier today with the head
- 40:04Speaker 2: football coach at Saint Albans, Dan Brown, and they're in
- 40:09Speaker 2: trouble numbers wise. Saint Albans is a Triple A school
- 40:14Speaker 2: where apparently no one wants to play football now. The
- 40:18Speaker 2: other sports are doing fine, but not football, and it's
- 40:22Speaker 2: been that way for some time. In my opinion, In
- 40:26Speaker 2: my opinion alone, it would be terrible for a school
- 40:30Speaker 2: the size of Saint Albans not to have a football team.
- 40:33Speaker 2: So they're gonna do a kind of a town hall,
- 40:37Speaker 2: a rallying cry, whatever you want to call it, a
- 40:40Speaker 2: gathering in the auditorium of Saint Albans High School at
- 40:43Speaker 2: six o'clock next Wednesday night, and we're gonna be talking
- 40:47Speaker 2: about that. Actually, as I said, I talked to coach
- 40:49Speaker 2: Dan Brown earlier this morning. He was not available to
- 40:53Speaker 2: come in today, but he is going to join us
- 40:55Speaker 2: on the show probably the meetings Wednesday probably be on
- 40:58Speaker 2: the show with his next Tuesday, I think to get
- 40:59Speaker 2: people enough time to plan on being there. And it's
- 41:01Speaker 2: got to be frustrating because you know, they've gone through
- 41:05Speaker 2: at Saint Albans, They've gone through coach after coach, and
- 41:10Speaker 2: no one seems to make any headway in returning the
- 41:13Speaker 2: program back to what it was. And I'll say this,
- 41:16Speaker 2: when I worked with another radio company, we did Saint
- 41:19Speaker 2: Albans High football on the radio, and I hosted the
- 41:21Speaker 2: weekly coaches show with former coaches like the late great
- 41:24Speaker 2: Scott Tinsley and later Nick Watts. We did those each
- 41:28Speaker 2: and every week we did the show, we recorded it
- 41:30Speaker 2: in front of an audience on Thursday night, then played
- 41:32Speaker 2: it back prior to the game on Friday, and it
- 41:35Speaker 2: was so difficult to talk to the late coach Tinsley
- 41:39Speaker 2: and later coach Watts saying basically what happened? I mean,
- 41:45Speaker 2: how did your team give up eighty points with a
- 41:48Speaker 2: non stopping clock in the second half. It was rough,
- 41:51Speaker 2: and look, I don't I don't know what the answer is.
- 41:54Speaker 2: Several coaches have tried and no one's had any success. Now,
- 41:57Speaker 2: hopefully they'll be able to turn it around because the
- 42:00Speaker 2: school has such a proud athletic tradition, but if they
- 42:06Speaker 2: don't get some players out, they could very well, they
- 42:09Speaker 2: could very well not field a team in twenty twenty six.
- 42:12Speaker 2: Think about that as school as big as Saint Albans,
- 42:15Speaker 2: a Triple A school not fielding a team. And again,
- 42:19Speaker 2: the other sports are okay, you know. I mean, they're
- 42:22Speaker 2: winning championships at the other sport. It's just the football thing. Anyway.
- 42:25Speaker 2: The coach is going to join me next week and
- 42:27Speaker 2: this meeting will be at Saint Albans High School in
- 42:29Speaker 2: the auditorium next Wednesday night at six o'clock and we're
- 42:32Speaker 2: going to talk a little bit more about that. I
- 42:34Speaker 2: certainly I wish them the best. But Dave Island Show
