- 0:00Back with Dan Hurley the Yukon men's basketball coaches show as a Huskies regular season
- 0:05champs, setting records with the ReConference wins eighteen twenty eight wins as a Yukon
- 0:10program in the regular season, another record, you had eight road wins.
- 0:14Dan, a lot of top ten stuff categorically in the country in terms of
- 0:19assists and blocks, top twenty rebounds and all that. Let's talk six men.
- 0:25Hassandi Ra last year was a guy that you know, toward the end
- 0:28of the season wasn't getting involved as much with the run of the NCAA tournament.
- 0:32But wow, what a boost he's given this team and he earns the
- 0:36sixth Man of the Year award in the Big East. Yeah, I mean,
- 0:40you got a I think a lot of times the answers aren't, you
- 0:45know, always into portal you you want to have as many internal you know,
- 0:52player development or you know, I see this player being able to take
- 0:56a big jump, you know, and go from a bench player to a
- 1:00starter. A guy that didn't play a whole lot for a big impact player
- 1:04at both ends of the court in terms of making plays and creating and playing
- 1:11with intensity and toughness. You know, just when the sign went and decided
- 1:17the transfer. He just felt like he'd be just a perfect Big eastar and
- 1:22just great to see him, you know, stay and build the role and
- 1:26get rewarded. Yeah, he's eight or more points nine times this year,
- 1:30a shooting percentage up around forty nine from three to thirty nine percent. That's
- 1:34a huge improvement. How much of that happened in the summer? How much
- 1:38of that shooting improvement happened as the season opened up and progressed. When did
- 1:44that start to happen for him? It just started. I think as soon
- 1:47as the season ended last year. You know, it's been you know,
- 1:51he's bought into the culture. I don't think Hoss went into year one and
- 1:57as good as shape or as sharp as he did. I think admittedly,
- 2:00if you ask him, he'll tell you he could have worked harder. You
- 2:05know, he didn't. He thought the success would come easier, you know,
- 2:07and he learned a valuable lesson and you know, instead of you know,
- 2:13you know, instead of taking an easier road and trying to find a
- 2:17way out, he looked internally and worked hard and just it's a great message.
- 2:23And nowlyst Caravan, who did not get recognized by the league, which
- 2:27is a cruel mistake in my mind, such a valuable guy on every level
- 2:34getting it back together from the three point range. Here these last couple of
- 2:37games, five for nine at Marquett and then four for six in Providence,
- 2:42so you know, scored twenty three and sixteen, and I mean when he
- 2:46scores, it just seems like this team explodes. I don't know what it
- 2:52is about his scoring. When it happens, whether it's driving to the basket
- 2:54or knocking down a three, it feels explosive for the whole team. I
- 2:59don't know what it is. I mean, Alex is uh. I mean,
- 3:04Alex is one of the best players in his position in the country.
- 3:07I don't know. You know, I watch a lot of college basketball,
- 3:10and you know, I don't know many places in the country where he wouldn't
- 3:15you start and be a critical player. I mean, fifty from the field,
- 3:20forty from three, and ninety from the line at over fourteen points a
- 3:23game. Uh, you know, with the winning that that he's been involved
- 3:29in, and with all of the you know, I just find it crazy
- 3:32to me that that coaches would miss it. You know, I get it.
- 3:38I get it. If it's if it's a you know, media people
- 3:43that just go by the numbers or or the priests and hype. But for
- 3:46whatever reason, you know, the Big East coaches didn't didn't see him as
- 3:52a player that at least got enough voted votes, uh, you know to
- 3:59get honorable mentioned. But how he wasn't All Conference? How Donovan, How
- 4:02we didn't have four guys with such a dominant season that we've had in this
- 4:06league. But you know, I shared with Alex a couple of text messages
- 4:11and text messages is that I got from coaches in this league that I think
- 4:17are are are amongst the best. And I showed him, you know what
- 4:23a couple of mesters I got. You know, some coaches I respect that
- 4:27were you know, stunned that he wasn't on one of the teams. Uh.
- 4:30It's the miscarriage of justice relative to awards basketball awards. But you know,
- 4:38and then the league should step in in such matters, you know,
- 4:42and then I'll throw Cam Jones in there too. Just the fact that Alex
- 4:46and Cam Jones, you know, didn't didn't make a third team All League
- 4:51or or an honorable mention. How there isn't a third team All League,
- 4:56you know with eleven teams. Now, I don't you know, but how
- 5:01it's crazy? Is there a I don't think there is a most improved Player
- 5:06award? Is there? Because some leagues have that, But he wouldn't have
- 5:12gotten it. The Desmond Claude got it because he went from oh yes,
- 5:15yes, a couple of points again. You know, Alex, you know
- 5:18he's going to have to right now, He's just got to settle. He's
- 5:20going to be you know, he would be drafted this year if he left.
- 5:27But he's got a chance to stay and become a first rounder like a
- 5:30like a Jaquez did for for U c L. A type of player if
- 5:33he stays. And yeah, but he's maybe you have to settle for you
- 5:38know, uh, National champion, Big East champion, going from multiples of
- 5:43those, uh, and then a guy who's going to play in the NBA
- 5:46for twelve to fifteen years. Maybe he'll just have to settle, you know,
- 5:48for all of that at some point. Yeah, there are there are
- 5:51guys like him already in that league, and he fits that bill perfectly.
- 5:55I think a quick final thing. You got the Big East coming up,
- 5:58obviously the conference tournament. You you have your first game, but you don't
- 6:01know who you're playing till pretty late, So how do you prep for that?
- 6:05Do you co do? Do you scout two teams? Do you look
- 6:09back at how you play both teams? What's your approach on that? Yeah,
- 6:12I mean we have to focus on both teams because it's a it's a
- 6:15it's a tight game. I mean, it's literally a pick them, you
- 6:18know type of game. So you know, we we earned the day off
- 6:24yesterday or on Sunday, we earned the day off, you know, Monday,
- 6:27we blended both UH and went and went pretty light to keep the team
- 6:32fresh, one of the benefits of not playing until Thursday and playing on Saturday.
- 6:38But we blended both teams and we watched both teams, edits, we
- 6:42broke down, you know, the fundamentals of how we want to attack both
- 6:46teams. UH, and then tomorrow we'll take Xavier and focus on them solely.
- 6:53Wednesday will take Butler in our morning practice in New York, and then
- 6:59you know, that night at the hotel, whichever team wins UH, you
- 7:02know, we'll destroy everything on the team that lost and then and then do
- 7:05a walk through. So we're basically prepared for both in a very unique way.
- 7:12Right, well, I know the preparation that will be uh spot on.
- 7:15We know that we've learned that over the years with you, all right,
- 7:18coach, we appreciate you, Thank you very much. Been a fabulous
- 7:21year. I wish you the best here going forward. Uh. You deserve
- 7:26everything you get as a team and as a coaching staff. And we certainly
- 7:29thank you for all your help on these shows during the course of the season.
- 7:33Appreciate you, Mike. And we've just got so many great people like
- 7:39you and and Wayne are definitely a part of the part of the team.
- 7:43It's been the just been uh, you know, it's been awesome and uh
- 7:46got got a lot left to do. Yes, that's right. It's one
- 7:50down, garden to go and beyond we shall see, all right. Thanks
- 7:54to Dan Hurley, The EGON Men's Basketball Coaches Show continues. We've got Alex
- 7:58Caravan k U eleven coming up in just a moment here onlear Field.
