Latest / Kenny Wallace Media / My Thoughts on Why Dale Earnhardt Jr. Left NBC
Transcript
- 0:03Happy Friday morning everybody. I'm still in Pensacola, FL.
- 0:10I will be leaving here Sunday and headed over to Daytona
- 0:13Beach, FL with brother Rusty and nephew Steven for Daytona Bike
- 0:18Week. However, I have had to think
- 0:23long and hard about this next subject.
- 0:28I have been. I've been asked by several
- 0:33people, Kenny Wallace, are you going to Give your opinion on
- 0:39Dale Earnhardt, Junior and NBC not working together anymore?
- 0:47Well, I had to think long and hard about that.
- 0:50I think about things that I've been taught in the past.
- 0:54If I give my opinion on the Dale Earnhardt Junior NBC situation,
- 1:00how does it benefit me? Well, first of all, Dale
- 1:07Earnhardt Junior is a very good friend of mine and I could just
- 1:10call him up. However, I don't want to really
- 1:16do that. The other thing is, I worked for
- 1:24Fox Sports out of Los Angeles. NASCAR on Fox.
- 1:29My boss was Eric Shanks, Jacob Bowman, Steve Craddock, the same
- 1:36boss. Those people are the same boss
- 1:38of Troy Aikman. You know, Joe Buck, the
- 1:43superstars. So I know a lot about the
- 1:49subject. I don't know a lot about Dale
- 1:52Junior and NBC. However, I have a pretty good
- 1:59idea because I did TV for 14 years.
- 2:04I would like to say that I have worked in TV at the highest
- 2:08level and I think you all know that.
- 2:11I think you acknowledge that I've worked in the booth.
- 2:17And I I think that I'm going to go ahead and give you my opinion
- 2:21on Dale Junior and the NBC situation.
- 2:25And here's why. This will be the ending, the
- 2:29reason I'm going to give you my opinion.
- 2:31Hey, Herman, are you really going to go there?
- 2:33How does it benefit you? Yes, I'm really going to go
- 2:37there. And here's why, because that's
- 2:39what I do. Fox TV paid me for 14 years.
- 2:47I was told this. Kenny Wallace, you go up there
- 2:51NASCAR race day built by the Home Depot then it was NASCAR
- 2:56race day fueled by Sunoco. We had two sponsors for the same
- 3:00show. It was Home Depot and then it
- 3:03was Sunoco and they said we want you to go up there say what you
- 3:10believe. So I was taught by TV executives
- 3:20to go up there and give my opinion.
- 3:21If I believe it, say it. So that's what I'm going to do.
- 3:27But the other part of this is it cannot be a shit show.
- 3:33So what I say has to be respectful.
- 3:36There are some people in the TV industry that just light a fire.
- 3:40I don't light a fire. You know when whenever somebody
- 3:42comes up with me, they say you're so raw.
- 3:45Kenny Wallace, you're so raw. You say what you think, but I'm
- 3:49not mean. That's the difference, OK?
- 3:52I'm not mean. So I'm going to go ahead and I'm
- 3:54going to give this. I'm going to, I'm going to give
- 3:57this a go, and we're going to start like this.
- 3:59I'm going to tell you my real story.
- 4:05OK? But let me put a disclaimer in
- 4:07here. I quit TV.
- 4:09That's a fact. You can ask Steve Craddock.
- 4:12You can ask Jacob Bowman. My bosses call him and ask him.
- 4:17I got lonely. I got depressed, I got tired of
- 4:20being on the road, the airport, the commercial airport was the
- 4:25death of me. I still say to this day, if you
- 4:28could have picked me up in a helicopter at the front door of
- 4:31my house, then I would still be doing TV.
- 4:37But those commercial airports and those lonely nights in the
- 4:41hotel rooms and they get in the rental car and the fighting, the
- 4:44people in the airport getting on the airplane, I could not take
- 4:49it it, it will grind a grown person down.
- 4:56So when I first start, now this is about Dale Junior, OK?
- 5:03When I first started, TVI was a race car driver, OK?
- 5:07And that was always a joke inside the TV compound.
- 5:11People would start talk to me about, hey man, you're great on
- 5:14TV. I'm like, I'm not ATV guy, I'm a
- 5:17race car driver. So when I did Speed TVI was I
- 5:25was still driving the race car and boy, they were so nice to
- 5:28me. I'd get done running a cup race
- 5:30in the Furniture Row car and I'd jump on the NASCAR Victory Lane
- 5:34set. Hey Kenny, you know, all was
- 5:36good. I usually ran anywhere between
- 5:3815th and 25th in that that car. I was the first, you know, cup
- 5:45driver for furniture. You know, we struggled a little
- 5:48bit so I would run 15th and 25th and when I worked for Speed TV
- 5:54which was owned by Fox, they were awesome.
- 5:59They treated me like $1,000,000. However, when I was done racing
- 6:06and I announced my retirement in 2015, it changed a lot.
- 6:12So the honeymoon was over. My honeymoon with TV was over.
- 6:20And here's why I have heard, I have heard this statement, this
- 6:26true statement. I've heard this statement before
- 6:29that was given to another great, great champion over and over.
- 6:34OK, you don't drive the race car anymore.
- 6:37You work for us now, OK? I get that.
- 6:43Kale Yarborough always told me there's somebody bigger than
- 6:46you. There's always somebody bigger
- 6:49than you, whether it's your God or your boss.
- 6:53But the last thing you tell an athlete that has competed his
- 6:57whole life is he worked for us. Now you're asking a great
- 7:01athlete that you chose to hire. You chose to hire this guy for
- 7:05your TV network and you're saying, OK, you work for us now.
- 7:10No, that's not the way you say it.
- 7:12You say, hey, so happy you're part of our TV team now.
- 7:18So I watch TV. The TV industry, they hire the
- 7:24athlete because they want the athlete.
- 7:26It's their their job. So in my opinion, they they you
- 7:30hire Dale Junior because he's the most famous athlete in auto
- 7:35racing by far and probably top five athlete in America.
- 7:39I'd say for sure top ten respond here is Dale Junior, top 10
- 7:44athlete in America? I think he is.
- 7:49So Dale Junior gets there and it's a honeymoon man.
- 7:55Dale Junior's here. The ratings are going to go
- 7:58through the roof because we got the most famous person.
- 8:01Now I'll remind you, Dale Junior's my friend, personal
- 8:04friend. Not little bit of friend like
- 8:07Dale Junior's like my friend, like like we see each other,
- 8:11we're going to hug each other, we're going to talk every month,
- 8:13you know. So I know I'm taking a chance at
- 8:16this. The honeymoon was over between
- 8:22Dale Junior and NBC. How many years have you been
- 8:26there? Three.
- 8:28The same as the honeymoon was over between, I mean, Joe Buck
- 8:32and Troy Aikman, Troy Aikman, Super Bowl winning quarterback,
- 8:39And all of a sudden the honeymoon's over.
- 8:41Oh, you're going to go to work, You know?
- 8:43So those two, Troy Aikman, Joe Buck, they left Fox and went to
- 8:49ESPN. I feel like that.
- 8:54No matter what you do, it's always about a honeymoon, right?
- 9:00It's it's the same story I told you about Carl Edwards.
- 9:04Hey, hey, let me tell you something.
- 9:05I'm thinking when I'm at right now, you're probably thinking,
- 9:07well, he he ain't got no juice on this.
- 9:10There's no controversy here. Well, there isn't.
- 9:13There is no controversy here. However, my, my my controversial
- 9:18opinion is this. They NBC fell out of love with
- 9:23Dale Junior and they just probably started treating them
- 9:28like a person. OK, you don't do that.
- 9:33Not when you're in the NASCAR Hall of Fame and you've won
- 9:35everything you've done. OK, listen, I'm sorry, I'm sad
- 9:41to say, not everybody's the same, OK?
- 9:43Nobody is treated exactly the same because nobody's equal, OK?
- 9:48It's like William William Byron said, and he said Max Papp has
- 9:52shared this with him and this is an innuendo.
- 9:55I'm going to warn you right now, your pay is indicative of your
- 10:02personal value. So if you're a sideline
- 10:06reporter, you're going to make 500,000 a year.
- 10:09However, if you're in the booth and you're in the NASCAR Hall of
- 10:12Fame and you've won a lot of races and you're the most famous
- 10:15racer, you're going to make, you know, 3-4 million a year.
- 10:20Not based on your talent in the booth, based on who you are,
- 10:25because Dale Junior is going to draw in ratings.
- 10:28Hey, I'm going to watch this race because my favorite
- 10:31drivers, Dale Junior, OK, That's the way it is.
- 10:36Respond right here. So my controversial take is NBC
- 10:42and Dale Junior fell out of love and I don't think that they saw
- 10:47his value anymore. So reports say that the
- 10:53streaming service, whoever Dale Junior, I guess Dale Junior is
- 10:57going to go to a streaming service next year, they see his
- 11:03value. So Dale Junior's got the last
- 11:08word here. Somebody else wants Dale Junior.
- 11:13OK, so that's the way it works. I'm not going to belabor the
- 11:16point. I'm not going to choose anything
- 11:18else to say. I gave you my truth, #1.
- 11:22They want you. They want you.
- 11:25So they get you and then you're there.
- 11:27And then about year three, they go.
- 11:30Honeymoon's over. You work for us now.
- 11:34No, I don't work for you now. I'm part of your team now.
- 11:38Don't. Don't be trying to treat me like
- 11:40I'm just some Joe. I'm not.
- 11:43And that's when the honeymoon falls out.
- 11:46That exact moment right there. And then all of a sudden they
- 11:49try to start, you know, putting in the TV compound.
- 11:53Here's your food. No, no, that's OK.
- 11:57I'll fit in like a team. But see what I mean?
- 11:59All those little innuendos. Now, that's enough about Dale,
- 12:05Dale Junior #1, the honeymoon was over.
- 12:08And I just don't think that day. I think that they tried to treat
- 12:13him like a normal Joe. I mean, I don't think that
- 12:16worked. OK.
- 12:19I'm going to be honest. I know what happened and I can't
- 12:21tell you, but I think that give you a couple innuendos and I I
- 12:28think Dale Junior. I think you'll watch this and I
- 12:33think you'll appreciate, you know, my story.
- 12:37My story was what I told you. Hey Kenny, come to work, Come to
- 12:40work. OK.
- 12:41I'm a race car driver and I'm working for him.
- 12:44But when I quit racing and I became a normal TV Guide, then
- 12:49it's when they tried it, you know, It's like I was working
- 12:51for a damn, I don't know. It was like I had bosses.
- 12:56Well, we all know we got bosses. OK, You don't got to tell me
- 12:58you're my boss. I'm going to give you the
- 13:00respect. I'm going to go.
- 13:01Hey, boss, hey, boss. But in reality, we come from a
- 13:04race team. We're A-Team.
- 13:06I don't work for you. Crew chief don't work for me and
- 13:10the driver don't work for the crew chief or a team.
- 13:14And when you go to be part of the TV team, you expect it to be
- 13:18that way. And then all of a sudden you
- 13:21look around you and like, oh, you know, Troy Aikman, Joe Buck,
- 13:25they left. They went to ESPN.
- 13:28It's because the TV they they're done with you.
- 13:31They they got what they think is their value out of you and and
- 13:35then you're like, OK, but Dale Junior won this.
- 13:38Dale Junior is the winner because he's going to a
- 13:42streaming service and I guess maybe they see his value a
- 13:47little more than NBC. And I'm going to leave you like
- 13:50this. If NBC wanted to keep Dale
- 13:53Junior, they would have kept him.
- 13:57All right, everybody. I hope you enjoyed this 14
- 14:00minute segment. And it wasn't too.
- 14:03I taught you about TV. Remember I worked at the highest
- 14:07level of TV. Was I in the booth for the Cup
- 14:10race? No.
- 14:11But that don't matter because I I did more.
- 14:14I did it all. So I'm not I'm not patting my
- 14:18back. I'm just reminding you all.
- 14:19I guess I'm a little pissed about this too because I know.
- 14:23I know the real deal. It is a little disappointing and
- 14:27you can see my face. It is a little disappointing
- 14:29when people it's kind of like a marriage.
- 14:32I love you. I love you.
- 14:33Let's get married And then about, you know here three or
- 14:38four, it's like you know and and that's what happens.
- 14:41So but congratulations Dale Junior you're going somewhere
- 14:46where they really want you because like I said, nobody said
- 14:49nothing to me about this. But once again if NBC wanted him
- 14:53they would have kept him. And all right now remember I
- 14:57know what happened but I can't tell you what happened.
- 15:00Although I shared some innuendo with you figured out between
- 15:03yourself. But if NBC wanted him, they
- 15:07could have been able to keep him.
- 15:10I think this is good. I think I did good.
- 15:13All right, Remember this is in podcast form and you can you can
- 15:18watch it on iTunes and Spotify. Please subscribe below.
- 15:23Now I'm going to watch myself over and see if this is OK.
