Latest / ACC Football Addiction (Atlantic Coast Conference) / North Carolina SHOCKER Means Something MASSIVE for Tar Heels & Bill Belichick

- 0:01Speaker 1: Let's turn our attention to another ACC team. Ironically, a
- 0:05Speaker 1: lot of ACC on this show this morning, considering we're
- 0:07Speaker 1: predominantly about the Big Ten and the SEC. But we
- 0:10Speaker 1: will get to that in a little bit. This segment
- 0:12Speaker 1: presented by PrizePix covering the Dublin game. UNC defeating TCU
- 0:17Speaker 1: by a score of 15-10. You talked about it a
- 0:19Speaker 1: little bit earlier on there, Cole, that it's just this
- 0:22Speaker 1: game is consistently sloppy. This game is consistently, one, sloppy
- 0:26Speaker 1: because of weather. That's Ireland for you. Two... the international travel.
- 0:30Speaker 1: And three, it's the first game of the season for
- 0:32Speaker 1: teams that are just getting out of camp. And that's
- 0:35Speaker 1: what this looked like for the most part. At first
- 0:37Speaker 1: blush for me, I thought UNC's defense was impressive. I
- 0:41Speaker 1: didn't think they were necessarily going to change the face
- 0:44Speaker 1: of the ACC by any means. But the way that
- 0:46Speaker 1: they incrementally got better as the game went on, Xavier Lewis,
- 0:50Speaker 1: a defensive tackle I thought was outstanding throughout this game.
- 0:53Speaker 1: They had a pass rush. They made Jaden Craig very uncomfortable.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Craig looked like a guy going from the FCS to
- 0:59Speaker 1: the FBS and trying to get things figured out. TCU's
- 1:02Speaker 1: outside running game I thought was really strong in the
- 1:05Speaker 1: first half. And then UNC, to their credit, found answers.
- 1:08Speaker 1: Steve Belichick has been MIA due to health reasons, but
- 1:11Speaker 1: still Bill Belichick at the helm. You can see the
- 1:13Speaker 1: influence on the defense here. Billy Edwards was exactly what
- 1:18Speaker 1: they needed him to be. I kind of have compared
- 1:21Speaker 1: him to a poor man's Haynes King. And even still,
- 1:25Speaker 1: he wasn't called upon to run the football nearly as
- 1:27Speaker 1: much as I think during his days at Maryland. A
- 1:29Speaker 1: little bit more considerate of his health and well-being considering
- 1:32Speaker 1: what he dealt with last year at Wisconsin. But Billy
- 1:35Speaker 1: Edwards was steady. He took care of the football, 57%
- 1:39Speaker 1: completion percentage for the air. Not necessarily what you want,
- 1:42Speaker 1: but you did have the weather element to deal with,
- 1:44Speaker 1: at least in the early part of the game. UNC
- 1:47Speaker 1: figured out the run late. Just a lot of things
- 1:49Speaker 1: here in terms of first game of the year, converting
- 1:53Speaker 1: on third down, taking care of business in the red zone,
- 1:56Speaker 1: things to be ironed out. If anything, I took away
- 1:59Speaker 1: from this, UNC's defense is going to keep them in
- 2:03Speaker 1: games this year. Whether or not it's going to completely
- 2:05Speaker 1: change the season, no idea. And then TCU, I think,
- 2:09Speaker 1: has far more questions offensively than we realize. Jaden Craig
- 2:13Speaker 1: looked like he was still acclimating to things, understandably so.
- 2:17Speaker 1: The running game is there. No Dwyer at wide receiver,
- 2:21Speaker 1: so that was certainly something to consider. But TCU and
- 2:24Speaker 1: Big 12 play, I'm a little bit more concerned for
- 2:27Speaker 1: them coming out of this game, not just because it's
- 2:29Speaker 1: a loss, but just kind of seeing how this game
- 2:31Speaker 1: wore on and UNC made adjustments and TCU didn't acclimate
- 2:34Speaker 1: to it.
- 2:35Speaker 2: So what did you see?
- 2:36Speaker 3: Okay, so let me ask you, what did you take
- 2:38Speaker 3: away more, that this is going to be a long
- 2:40Speaker 3: season out in Fort Worth with Sonny Dykes at the helm,
- 2:43Speaker 3: or that maybe because of it is year two and
- 2:47Speaker 3: you can learn from your mistakes, Bill Belichick may have
- 2:49Speaker 3: things right in Chapel Hill?
- 2:53Speaker 2: Right. I mean, is UNC on the path to a
- 2:55Speaker 2: bowl game?
- 2:56Speaker 4: Yeah, let's go flip a bowl game.
- 2:58Speaker 2: I think it's a coin flip. 50-50.
- 3:01Speaker 1: There's a lot of coin flip games on their schedule,
- 3:03Speaker 1: so I felt encouraged by what they were able to
- 3:06Speaker 1: do in the running game. I think Billy Edwards is
- 3:08Speaker 1: going to get better as the season goes on. UNC's
- 3:12Speaker 1: got to clean up the penalties. 11 penalties for 100 yards,
- 3:15Speaker 1: and that was an issue all last season as well.
- 3:17Speaker 1: So that's really not something we're accustomed to when it
- 3:20Speaker 1: comes to Bill Belichick football teams historically. So hopefully they
- 3:24Speaker 1: get that cleaned up. But yeah, TCU, I don't know.
- 3:29Speaker 1: I don't know where they have the answers offensively. The
- 3:32Speaker 1: running game was there in the first half, but once
- 3:34Speaker 1: you dedicate yourself to taking away the run, and especially
- 3:37Speaker 1: the outside run, TCU becomes very easy to stop.
- 3:41Speaker 3: So, counterpoint, it was actually TCU with the 11 penalties
- 3:45Speaker 3: for over 100 yards, not UNC. So, TCU was the
- 3:48Speaker 3: one that was more inflicting.
- 3:49Speaker 2: Oh, my mistake.
- 3:51Speaker 4: No, which is why I'm going to say what I'm
- 3:52Speaker 4: going to say.
- 3:53Speaker 3: As much as I think that UNC maybe has somewhat
- 3:56Speaker 3: turned a corner, defensively.
- 3:58Speaker 4: I'll give credit where credit's due. They were phenomenal yesterday.
- 4:00Speaker 4: Their front seven is going to keep them in games.
- 4:02Speaker 4: Totally agree with you.
- 4:03Speaker 3: But as much as we can say that that was
- 4:05Speaker 3: a big-time factor, TCU gave the game away.
- 4:09Speaker 4: Like, I'm sorry.
- 4:10Speaker 3: And I understand that you're like, oh, well, you hate
- 4:13Speaker 3: on UNC all the time because you just don't want
- 4:16Speaker 3: to shave your head and you don't want to see
- 4:17Speaker 3: them get bowl eligible.
- 4:18Speaker 4: Yeah, okay, whatever.
- 4:19Speaker 3: Guys, let me remind you that there was a safety
- 4:24Speaker 3: because of a horrible muffed snap.
- 4:27Speaker 4: So that got you two points.
- 4:29Speaker 3: Twice, you were inside the red zone, and instead of
- 4:32Speaker 3: taking the field goal, you went for it on fourth down.
- 4:36Speaker 3: You did not convert on either one, so that's six
- 4:38Speaker 3: more points. So in a game that ended up being 15-10,
- 4:43Speaker 3: even without pitiful at times, TCU was on both sides. Really, really,
- 4:48Speaker 3: if you want to go anything offensively. How bad it
- 4:50Speaker 3: looked with Gordie Samus offensively. You kind of gave them
- 4:54Speaker 3: the win because if you just would have gotten the
- 4:55Speaker 3: field goals and then you don't miss the punt, I mean,
- 4:58Speaker 3: you don't miss the safety, you win the football game 16-13.
- 5:01Speaker 3: That's just how the game goes. So again, it's like
- 5:05Speaker 3: on one hand, I can see that there was growth.
- 5:08Speaker 3: I think that you look at the wide receiver room
- 5:10Speaker 3: of North Carolina. Jordan Shipp, I think is going to
- 5:12Speaker 3: be a problem. I'll tell you who's going to be
- 5:14Speaker 3: an absolute problem.
- 5:15Speaker 4: Jelani Thurman, the tight end.
- 5:17Speaker 3: It's just going to consistently find ways to get on open.
- 5:21Speaker 3: I was beyond impressed with him as a route runner.
- 5:23Speaker 3: I was beyond impressed with him being able to win
- 5:24Speaker 3: against the linebackers, made constant opportunities for himself to get
- 5:29Speaker 3: on open for Billy Edwards to connect with. Like, there
- 5:31Speaker 3: was growth, and certainly you can say, all right, well,
- 5:33Speaker 3: no more Freddy Kitchens, welcome Bob Petrino. That FTS mentality
- 5:37Speaker 3: of feeding the studs is going to be there, and
- 5:39Speaker 3: that's going to make us more dynamic.
- 5:41Speaker 4: And certainly defensively, you could say that our front seven is.
- 5:44Speaker 3: Going to be physical that can get after quarterbacks, and
- 5:47Speaker 3: in this conference where right now it feels like that.
- 5:50Speaker 4: Number four spot behind.
- 5:53Speaker 3: SMU and Louisville could be wide open. Let's go ahead
- 5:56Speaker 3: and take a run for it. Yeah, you feel better
- 5:59Speaker 3: about that. But for me, it's more so TCU was
- 6:02Speaker 3: awful in every sense. TCU on the one field goal
- 6:06Speaker 3: drive in the second half, they had four penalties, including
- 6:10Speaker 3: two 15-yard penalties that tacked on fresh set of downs.
- 6:14Speaker 4: For UNC's offense.
- 6:15Speaker 5: Hey guys, I'll get right back to the clip of
- 6:16Speaker 5: the power too.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Sorry.
- 6:17Speaker 5: I wasn't on it this week.
- 6:18Speaker 6: Just had terrible wifi where I was up in Tallahassee,
- 6:21Speaker 6: but Tom and Cole went through, recapped a bunch of games.
- 6:24Speaker 6: We appreciate you guys for tuning into that live or
- 6:27Speaker 6: watching it on replay here on the clip diversion.
- 6:29Speaker 5: Make sure that you are supporting our friends over at
- 6:31Speaker 5: prize picks.
- 6:32Speaker 6: We don't have a lot of picks set for this
- 6:33Speaker 6: week one yet, but we will be picking them all week.
- 6:36Speaker 5: So make sure that you are on the price picks app.
- 6:38Speaker 6: Understand that if you play $ 5 and win that first lineup,
- 6:40Speaker 6: you get $ 150 in lineups instantly and, We appreciate PrizePix
- 6:44Speaker 6: for their support.
- 6:45Speaker 5: Go check them out.
- 6:46Speaker 3: So it's like the self-inflicted wounds that we saw by TCU,
- 6:50Speaker 3: the constant inability to get out of its own way,
- 6:53Speaker 3: the horrendous play of the offensive line, and the play
- 6:56Speaker 3: calling of Gordie Sammis really was just so concerning. that
- 7:02Speaker 3: even though you're sitting here and saying, all right, well,
- 7:03Speaker 3: Bill Belichick gets his first win against a Power 4
- 7:06Speaker 3: team in, what has it been, over 270 days?
- 7:10Speaker 4: Yeah, congratulations.
- 7:12Speaker 3: But that's not a win that I'm sitting here and
- 7:13Speaker 3: feeling good about if I'm a UNC fan about now
- 7:16Speaker 3: we're right back in this thing. I'm more so like
- 7:18Speaker 3: TCU had every opportunity to take this from us. We
- 7:21Speaker 3: gave them free chances right on the silver platter. And
- 7:26Speaker 3: they just decided to go ahead and drop their pants
- 7:28Speaker 3: and take a giant dookie. Like that's what we saw
- 7:30Speaker 3: in that performance. And that's what's so frustrating. I think
- 7:33Speaker 3: if you're a TCU fan, because now you're looking at
- 7:36Speaker 3: it and going, maybe Kendall Browse had something that was
- 7:39Speaker 3: going right. Maybe Josh Hoover, we shouldn't have been talking
- 7:41Speaker 3: mad crap about. Hey, maybe what we did last season
- 7:44Speaker 3: where we got to that nine win record, that wasn't
- 7:47Speaker 3: at that actual bad of a situation.
- 7:49Speaker 4: That was pretty damn good.
- 7:52Speaker 1: What did you think of Billy Edwards overall in this game?
- 7:54Speaker 1: I think there's still a lot of room for him
- 7:56Speaker 1: to grow within the offense. And again, this is the
- 7:59Speaker 1: Dublin game in week zero. So I'm putting a lot
- 8:03Speaker 1: on that. I'm putting a lot on the weather as well.
- 8:06Speaker 6: Fine.
- 8:07Speaker 3: Again, I think that he was a game managing quarterback.
- 8:10Speaker 3: I'll be real. I've never been a fan of Billy
- 8:13Speaker 3: Edwards State. I wasn't a fan of it at Maryland.
- 8:15Speaker 3: I'm not really a fan of it here. I think
- 8:18Speaker 3: That what you have is you have an offensive coordinator
- 8:20Speaker 3: that has worked with so many different passers. He's going
- 8:23Speaker 3: to put them in situations to where it's not so
- 8:25Speaker 3: complicated where.
- 8:25Speaker 4: They're asking him to do too much.
- 8:27Speaker 3: I think that Bobby Petrino being able to dial up
- 8:30Speaker 3: plays and being able to run formations that are very
- 8:34Speaker 3: quarterback friendly was a win. I think that that's where
- 8:38Speaker 3: you say... We got a new OC that with our quarterback, who,
- 8:41Speaker 3: by the way, let me remind everybody, there was supposed
- 8:43Speaker 3: to be a rotation between him and Miles O'Neal. So
- 8:45Speaker 3: Edwards did do enough to be able to say, no,
- 8:48Speaker 3: you sit back, Texas A & M, cast off.
- 8:50Speaker 4: I got this. I'm good. I'm going to handle business here.
- 8:53Speaker 3: I think you feel good enough to say he will
- 8:55Speaker 3: be a sufficient quarterback.
- 8:57Speaker 1: In the ACC.
- 8:58Speaker 4: But my opinion really didn't change for him.
- 9:00Speaker 3: And also, again, this is the sloppiest of sloppy games
- 9:03Speaker 3: because that's what we are promised when you see two
- 9:06Speaker 3: teams play in Dublin every single year.
- 9:08Speaker 4: It just is not pretty.
- 9:10Speaker 3: And sometimes this is a bad omen of what to
- 9:13Speaker 3: expect going into the season. So let me counterpoint this
- 9:16Speaker 3: and say to you, TCU now falls victim in the
- 9:19Speaker 3: same path as Kansas State, a purple team that goes
- 9:22Speaker 3: across to Dublin, looks awful despite being the favorites, Are
- 9:27Speaker 3: we going to see them take a similar approach to
- 9:30Speaker 3: other teams that have fallen victim? Because this is the
- 9:33Speaker 3: curse here. It's not just a Kansas State thing last season.
- 9:37Speaker 3: Kansas State went 6-6 and Chris Kleiman decided to go
- 9:39Speaker 3: ahead and call it quits. The season before that was
- 9:42Speaker 3: the infamous Florida State season against Georgia Tech where they
- 9:44Speaker 3: went 2-10.
- 9:46Speaker 4: And we're still waiting for some guy to eat dog poop.
- 9:48Speaker 4: That's what we're still waiting for.
- 9:49Speaker 3: The next season, the year before that, you had the
- 9:54Speaker 3: Scott Frost season.
- 9:58Speaker 4: Remember Scott Frost season?
- 9:59Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
- 10:00Speaker 4: He made it two games, and then they said, we're done.
- 10:03Speaker 3: So this is where we are when it comes to
- 10:06Speaker 3: this matchup. It's now a question mark of, is this
- 10:10Speaker 3: a bad omen for TCU going into 2026? Because Jordan
- 10:15Speaker 3: Dwyer's not being out there was a major impact, I think,
- 10:18Speaker 3: in the passing game. But Jaden Craig looked like he
- 10:21Speaker 3: was in over his head. And also, it wasn't just
- 10:24Speaker 3: Jaden Craig. Gordie Samus, the offensive play caller, was horrible
- 10:30Speaker 3: with his play designs. And they really did not have
- 10:34Speaker 3: a sufficient offensive line. I mean, pick which way you
- 10:37Speaker 3: want to go with it. There were so many, like
- 10:39Speaker 3: Jaden Craig, because if he is the quarterback, and we've
- 10:41Speaker 3: seen the reports that he had been killing it throughout camp,
- 10:44Speaker 3: and that he had looked the part, and that who's
- 10:46Speaker 3: going to remember Josh Hoover? That's going to draw in
- 10:48Speaker 3: the notion of, okay, bad.
- 10:50Speaker 4: Performance, now he's overrated. Which again, maybe he is.
- 10:55Speaker 3: Everything with that offense, outside of Jeremy Payne, with the
- 10:58Speaker 3: outside runs, was terrible.
- 11:00Speaker 2: Everything.
- 11:00Speaker 3: You had the opening script, which was fantastic. Great execution.
- 11:05Speaker 3: And everyone is like, yep, this is what TCU football.
- 11:08Speaker 4: Is supposed to be. And then it was 50 minutes of.
- 11:13Speaker 4: It was like, what was it? Like here in the...
- 11:16Speaker 4: yakety yak song i'm just like slipping.
- 11:18Speaker 3: And sliding like that was it because literally it's like
- 11:23Speaker 3: we don't want to win you don't want to win
- 11:25Speaker 3: but one team made fewer mistakes and just like how
- 11:29Speaker 3: fitting was it also for the game known for being
- 11:32Speaker 3: a complete and total slap fest to end with a
- 11:36Speaker 3: offsides penalty on fourth and one How fitting was it
- 11:40Speaker 3: for that's the way that Bill Belichick gets the victory?
- 11:43Speaker 4: The discipline, the more disciplined team found a way to
- 11:46Speaker 4: hold on out.
- 11:48Speaker 1: It was very telling that when TCU had a chance
- 11:52Speaker 1: in the fourth quarter to win the game, or at
- 11:55Speaker 1: least try and get a score on the board, they
- 11:58Speaker 1: just did not trust Jaden Craig to throw the football.
- 12:00Speaker 2: They didn't trust that offensive line to give him time.
- 12:03Speaker 2: They still stuck to the run game.
- 12:04Speaker 1: And I understand they were trying to burn some clock
- 12:06Speaker 1: in the process and they'd had success running the football.
- 12:10Speaker 1: That is something they've absolutely got to figure out as
- 12:12Speaker 1: the season goes on. What is their identity? What are
- 12:14Speaker 1: you going to do when you're down? Because then it
- 12:17Speaker 1: turns into a service academy offense where it's like, hey,
- 12:19Speaker 1: we can't come back. We can't come back from a deficit.
- 12:22Speaker 1: So TCU is going to find answers there. I think
- 12:25Speaker 1: Billy Edwards is going to improve as the season goes
- 12:27Speaker 1: on for UNC. I was encouraged, by the way, that
- 12:30Speaker 1: he just managed the game. He took care of the football.
- 12:32Speaker 1: He did exactly what he had to do. UNC's got
- 12:34Speaker 1: to run the football better, but they have some encouraging
- 12:37Speaker 1: pieces in the passing game. And the defense played well.
- 12:40Speaker 1: I think that's the takeaway for UNC is the defense
- 12:43Speaker 1: is going to be there. They're going to keep these
- 12:44Speaker 1: games low, leather helmet scoring games. And I think UNC
- 12:48Speaker 1: is going to have a chance at more games than
- 12:50Speaker 1: we realize.
- 12:51Speaker 3: I was going to say, I totally agree with you
- 12:55Speaker 3: on the one part about the defense. Derek McDonald was
- 12:57Speaker 3: phenomenal yesterday. Xavier Lewis was arguably the biggest star. To
- 13:02Speaker 3: see what he did as a true sophomore, you have
- 13:05Speaker 3: got to feel very, very content about that. the type
- 13:09Speaker 3: of players that you're seeing be developed in that standpoint.
- 13:11Speaker 3: Malak Abujabode, number nine. I'm just going to say it
- 13:14Speaker 3: because I know. Yes.
- 13:16Speaker 2: Injured in the first half, came back, played really well.
- 13:19Speaker 3: And the fact that he got that big strip sack
- 13:22Speaker 3: that led to an opportunity for UNC, major, major win.
- 13:25Speaker 3: So that, I think, is the precedent of like, okay,
- 13:30Speaker 3: things are going to look different this season for UNC. Yeah.
- 13:33Speaker 3: I don't change my stance that they're still going to
- 13:36Speaker 3: be awful. I do not think that they're going to
- 13:38Speaker 3: be bowl eligible, but it's going to look different. I
- 13:41Speaker 3: think that like last season, there were four games against
- 13:44Speaker 3: ACC opponents that were one score affairs. I think with
- 13:47Speaker 3: the way that they looked yesterday, if that can continue,
- 13:49Speaker 3: but by Petrino calling the offense and you getting a
- 13:51Speaker 3: more consistent groove in the passing attack. I think that
- 13:54Speaker 3: there are going to be at least two of those
- 13:56Speaker 3: games that would have been losses last year that you
- 13:58Speaker 3: could say would be wins this year. That's the main takeaway.
- 14:02Speaker 3: They have a week to get ready for East Tennessee State,
- 14:05Speaker 3: and then they have their first real test, I would say,
- 14:07Speaker 3: in ACC.
- 14:08Speaker 4: Play on the road against Clemson.
- 14:10Speaker 3: After that Clemson game, before they take on Notre Dame, which,
- 14:13Speaker 3: by the way, if they lose to Notre Dame, nobody's
- 14:15Speaker 3: going to be shocked on that one.
- 14:16Speaker 4: But how they look in that Clemson game.
- 14:19Speaker 3: I think will give you a better indication of This
- 14:22Speaker 3: feels different in Chapel Hill this season. Not saying it's great,
- 14:25Speaker 3: but it feels different.
- 14:26Speaker 4: Because of... Let me remind everybody of this. And I
- 14:30Speaker 4: have to preface this. For both sides.
- 14:31Speaker 3: Because I don't want to overreact and say, Sonny Dyches
- 14:34Speaker 3: needs to be fired tomorrow. Which, by the way, TCU
- 14:36Speaker 3: put up more of a fight with the Fort Worth
- 14:38Speaker 3: Star of Telegram than they did with UNC.
- 14:39Speaker 2: So, congratulations on that.
- 14:43Speaker 4: But I don't want to say, and then it gets clipped, UNC, back, baby.
- 14:49Speaker 4: And then TCU, croaked, baby.
- 14:52Speaker 3: When we're going to see because of it being the
- 14:53Speaker 3: Dublin game and it being the all shit shows of
- 14:56Speaker 3: shit shows known as what we get in the Aer
- 14:58Speaker 3: Lingus Classic, this is not a total indication of what
- 15:02Speaker 3: these two teams are. Give me three weeks and then
- 15:05Speaker 3: we can get a better gauge on what.
- 15:06Speaker 2: We can expect in 26.
- 15:07Speaker 1: I feel like UNC Clemson is going to be a
- 15:10Speaker 1: rock fight in a couple of weeks, but we'll see
- 15:13Speaker 1: about that.
