Transcript
- 0:07Right, good afternoon welcome Miller and Condon on a Thursday,
- 0:10the Iowa Sports Radio Network, Trent Condon, Ken Miller for the
- 0:14next couple of hours talking sports with you.
- 0:17Appreciate you starting your afternoon with us.
- 0:19Here's what's coming up on our program.
- 0:21Been a while since we ventured N to the Twin Cities.
- 0:24Catch up on sports up there and we'll do so at the bottom of the
- 0:27hour with our friend Dane Moussutani from the Saint Paul
- 0:30Pioneer Press. The primaries primary beat is
- 0:33the Vikings, but he certainly covers the the Twins.
- 0:37We got another win last night. Three in a row, they're stacking
- 0:39them up. And the Tigers starting stack.
- 0:43I'll tell you what right it was. It was 72 when I'd had enough
- 0:47and went over to an NHL game. That's about what I got into it.
- 0:50Same as last night, little different schedule that we live.
- 0:53Funny, there's two nights in a row it's been exact opposite.
- 0:55What was the final 868? Also, they did get interesting.
- 1:00And that Twins bullpen, This is not sustainable.
- 1:03No, no, there's no excitement level over here.
- 1:06Cody Funderburth might be the best reliever.
- 1:09Cool Sands, maybe it's not good. And I was texting with the Twins
- 1:15buddy last night. Boy, it would have been nice if
- 1:17they wouldn't have sold off all those bullpen arms, which was
- 1:19the strength of their team. Not a lot of very good
- 1:22prospects, but conversation maybe for Dave Mizutani.
- 1:25We'll talk to him at the bottom of the hour.
- 1:26We'll do some. I want to at least get one wild
- 1:29question. Minnesota has a massive game
- 1:31tonight. Oh, yeah, absolutely massive.
- 1:33They played the Stars in Dallas, OK, And they're two points back
- 1:37of Dallas right now. And with second place,
- 1:39Colorado's won the division. But Minnesota and Dallas are two
- 1:44evenly matched hockey clubs, and one of them's going home after
- 1:46seven games. Maximum minimum of four,
- 1:49obviously, and you want home ice advantage and if if Minnesota
- 1:53has any chance of getting home ice advantage, they need to win
- 1:57tonight rather than start the series in Dallas.
- 1:59There's only four games left in the regular season, so we'll
- 2:02pick Dane's brain on that as well.
- 2:04A lot of topics for Minnesota sports.
- 2:06We get the Dane here in about 25 minutes.
- 2:08Look forward to that as we always do.
- 2:11Dane Mazatani coming up. Do we ask him as a reporter, as
- 2:15a beat reporter on the NFL beat, how does he view the Rusini
- 2:19Vrabel story? I think this is getting.
- 2:21Zero coverage. I I think you're more intrigued
- 2:23by it than I am. Maybe you know what?
- 2:25It more so intrigues me. Not the scandal itself.
- 2:28Oh well, the the fact that it sets women back.
- 2:29I truly believe that this was not just some drive by.
- 2:35Hey, that's my Vrabel. Let me get my iPhone.
- 2:37This is a photo from I don't know how many feet yards miles,
- 2:42but this is a professional stakeout trying to trying to
- 2:47find them. So there's they're in Arizona
- 2:49they're in Phoenix area Tempe for Arizona State pro day.
- 2:52Then they got an off day where they run out to this adults only
- 2:56resort $2100 a night for a private cabin and and they're
- 3:01busted and I want to know what's behind it who's behind it
- 3:04doesn't doesn't intrigue you one bit.
- 3:06No doesn't OK and it's and usually speak for the audience
- 3:09so I'll move on it's. Two consult dissenting adults.
- 3:12But it's it's it paints her variable will be fine.
- 3:16Yes. Oh, absolutely, Because that's
- 3:18always how it. Goes.
- 3:18That's always how it goes. The guy on the other.
- 3:20Hand, Yeah. I mean, she's not going to be
- 3:25able to keep her job. I wouldn't think.
- 3:27I wouldn't think. And how she's seen by her peers,
- 3:30her female peers when she goes to an event like her male peers.
- 3:34Well, her male peers here, but I think particularly the women.
- 3:37Yes, I mean it hurts. Them, yes.
- 3:39But then her, well, male peers don't have that availability.
- 3:43Yeah, So leave it alone with Dane I All right, Fairpoint.
- 3:49If he was a female reporter, yeah.
- 3:51Maybe, yeah. 1:00 What are we doing at 10?
- 3:55Tommy Birch is going to join us. Look forward to this Birchy.
- 3:57We had a lot to talk about. We do.
- 3:59We absolutely do as we'll pick Tommy's brain.
- 4:02Obviously Iowa State women's sports, what's going on there?
- 4:04Basketball, rather, what's going on there, if anything, Is he
- 4:08hearing anything? Have you seen Audie Crooks
- 4:11lining up a visit, at least publicly?
- 4:13No, I mean not either. The initial speculation,
- 4:16Oklahoma, Texas were a couple that were talked to, you talked
- 4:18about and bandied about I think a bunch in the beginning.
- 4:22It's hard to envision at least Oklahoma, the style of play that
- 4:25they have. Her being able to play in that
- 4:27kind of system didn't seem like it was a real good fit for me.
- 4:30Texas, I could see a little bit more.
- 4:31And by the way, the Longhorns are losing everybody.
- 4:34Are they really? Yeah, they have.
- 4:36After a Final Four run, they have lost a bunch of both
- 4:39starters and people that were rotational pieces, young
- 4:42players, including one that has when.
- 4:43You say everybody like. Like 5-6 players that were
- 4:46coming back with eligibility and.
- 4:48Starters. I think 2 starters and one of
- 4:51their youngsters and there was a connection.
- 4:53She's from Minneapolis, but she played for all Iowa Tech, so
- 4:56people connecting potentially some dots there.
- 4:59I think there was maybe some kind of connection with, oh,
- 5:02that's what it was. Addison Bjorn, remember that
- 5:03name from back in recruiting another one of the five stars
- 5:06out that we're after from the Kansas City area.
- 5:08Of course, she makes her decision to play with Texas, to
- 5:11play with this former AAU teammate who is now departing
- 5:15the program. So it's a connecting of the dots
- 5:17there. But yeah, that one jumped out.
- 5:19But yeah, I haven't seen any more on Audie Crooks and visits
- 5:22are being set up. I saw I was getting a visit
- 5:24coming up this weekend from Danny Carnegie, who averaged
- 5:29nearly 18 a game, 5 rebounds for Georgia a season ago.
- 5:33Really. Yeah.
- 5:33So we're not talking about a mid major player here, somebody from
- 5:36the SEC that put up those kind of numbers a season ago.
- 5:39And that is one that Jan Jensen and the Jan Jensen thing.
- 5:43Yeah, of course, you're looking for star power and those kind of
- 5:45things, but also just building roster.
- 5:48You have to find those players that are willing, that were mid
- 5:51major player that averaged 18 a game there.
- 5:53You're probably going to be a bench piece here.
- 5:56Following and the easy ones are the star players and the ones
- 5:59that I think grab all the headlines and the attention.
- 6:01That's the easy part, that next year maybe even could be in a
- 6:04way a little bit, yeah, a little bit more difficult to finding
- 6:07those right pieces and the ones that are going to go from
- 6:09playing 35 minutes a game, you might be playing 12 to 15.
- 6:12You got to be willing to do so, obviously.
- 6:14And be a good teammate along with.
- 6:15This was about to say no question about it.
- 6:17All right. And then Speaking of women's
- 6:19sports, so this came up, I guess, on the afternoon show off
- 6:23the bench earlier in the week. And apparently Lucas Train is
- 6:27trying to steal my title as Mr. WNBA on this radio station.
- 6:31Really. So I thought I better get my you
- 6:32know what on my in gear. And I did.
- 6:36We lined up Scott Agnes, who covers the Fever.
- 6:38He also covers the Pacers, but it'll be more Fever.
- 6:43So we're going to we're going to talk some WNBA.
- 6:45Obviously, the new collective bargaining agreement has done
- 6:48just the significant impact as far as financially for all of
- 6:52the people on the roster. I want to know about Sophie
- 6:54Cunningham. Where is she?
- 6:55Is she going to play? Is she going to be a member of
- 6:57the Fever? So we'll talk to talk to him
- 7:00about that. And of course, Caitlin coming up
- 7:02here at 1:30 as I try to nip it in the bud.
- 7:07You can be June 25th. You can be Bister WNBA okay all.
- 7:10Right. And tell that.
- 7:11I'll leave that title with you, Lucas Strain, but until then,
- 7:14layoff. That's your.
- 7:17That's your corner. That's my area.
- 7:19You kind of missed that corner a year ago for quite a.
- 7:21While out of a Trent, I really did.
- 7:22In fact, what was that thing she played in recently?
- 7:28Ohh. The American team.
- 7:30Yeah, yeah, yeah. I was all over where she was.
- 7:32The she was the MVP. I can't get enough of her.
- 7:34I really can look at your I love greatness and she's great.
- 7:37Look at your evolution. Well, not now.
- 7:39I wouldn't go full blown it's. You've come a long.
- 7:43Yes, absolutely, Absolutely. When it comes to that, she's
- 7:46phenomenal. She is.
- 7:47Phenomenal. An old dog can learn new.
- 7:48Tricks. Well, one, one or two.
- 7:51So that's coming up today. Trent will make some picks
- 7:53before we get out of here. How much Masters have you seen?
- 7:55So I'm, you know, sitting in here watching the watching the
- 7:58tournament on ESPN, all of a sudden it's gone.
- 8:00Oh yeah, yeah. So where is it now?
- 8:02I think it is currently Paramount plus.
- 8:06I have the Masters app so that's where I'm watching currently.
- 8:09How much does that cost? Free I mean.
- 8:12Maybe I should help. You should have help me out here
- 8:14during the. Break.
- 8:15Yes, yes, absolutely. What did you say it is?
- 8:17I'm looking at my phone to see how do I have paramount.
- 8:19I don't think I do. Yeah, that's one I think that
- 8:21has fallen by the wayside. I think I got a a free Paramount
- 8:26plus subscription with my subscription to 24/7 sports.
- 8:29What else is on Paramount? I have.
- 8:32No idea. I don't.
- 8:33College hoops. There's no college hoops, no.
- 8:35Nothing extra. No, nothing extra, right?
- 8:37Yeah. So I don't need to have it to no
- 8:39other than maybe, you know, a couple days a year, right?
- 8:41And that's it. So maybe there's a free trial
- 8:43out there or something. But yeah, the Masters app, it's
- 8:45got you covered kind of in the interim before we get back to
- 8:47real television coverage as 2 old guys complained about
- 8:50television and Patrick agreed often.
- 8:54Firing what he starred bogey eagle.
- 8:56He had an eagle early on, eagle on the 2nd.
- 8:58I think. I beg your pardon Birdie.
- 9:00The first eagle the 2nd and he's currently 5 under on it.
- 9:06Last glimpse had the lead. Is he still there at 5 under?
- 9:09He is in fact, four eyes get dropped the shot.
- 9:12He's 4 tied tied for the lead with Sam Burns.
- 9:16One of the one of the good guys on the tour that everybody seems
- 9:19to like just hasn't worked. His form is not very good.
- 9:22I don't have anything in the dozens of pools.
- 9:25It feels like that. On Sam Burns.
- 9:27And I have nothing on Sam Burns, so congratulations to your
- 9:30master's winner. What about Fred Couples?
- 9:33I don't know. What was his price to make the
- 9:35cut? Did you ever dabble in that
- 9:36mark? I didn't.
- 9:37No, I didn't look very at that. He's right now tied for fifth.
- 9:41He's 2 under. He's 2 strokes off the Doesn't
- 9:43he always make the cut? I wouldn't say always.
- 9:45But certainly of the old guys if the couples is going to be if
- 9:50provided the back is OK and apparently so far so good for
- 9:54for couples. He's off to a great start.
- 9:57I saw Olaf Thabel got off to a good start 'cause I'm watching
- 10:00your Zach Johnson bet Yes, and and he's he was even last time I
- 10:04checked Zach was. I like that play you made
- 10:07yesterday with the. The seniors, but Freddy Couples
- 10:09is making it tough on me. He is right now.
- 10:11He's off to a terrific start, no doubt about that.
- 10:15And and it seems like couples has a round like this so.
- 10:18It's not necessarily two, yeah. That's, that's kind of be going
- 10:21to be the part that's going to make it a little bit more
- 10:23difficult. I'm trying to find like a
- 10:25rundown of all of his different results and I can't find here we
- 10:29go. He lashed 2 years ago, made the
- 10:31cut in 2023, but it missed 4 consecutive.
- 10:35Oh, really? Yeah, I'm all wet on that one.
- 10:37Then I wonder who I'm thinking of.
- 10:39But he's had those runs, he's had opportunity, been close.
- 10:422017, he finished tied for 18th. All right, good starts, though.
- 10:45That's what you get from Fred. Great swing him and early else
- 10:48maybe two of the prettiest swings in golf.
- 10:50Yes you know I mean certainly the swing easy don't have to
- 10:54kill the golf balls like most most of us amateurs try to do
- 10:58just swing as fast as we can and hit it as far as we damn well
- 11:02can. But those two certainly went
- 11:05against the grain when it comes to that.
- 11:06All right. And then Trent's going to make
- 11:08some plays. Circus sports sponsor those.
- 11:11Kind of an easy daylight day baseball wise.
- 11:14Full slate of hockey tonight, including a massive game tonight
- 11:17if you're a hockey fan between the Wild and the Stars, as the
- 11:21Stars try to do everything they can to hang on.
- 11:24You kind of have me intrigued. I might watch some hockey
- 11:27tonight. It's a hell of a game, Trey.
- 11:28It's a huge spot. And you know what?
- 11:30I think it's going to be a physical game.
- 11:31I think there's going to be some messages sent.
- 11:33I love what the Wild did at the trade deadline.
- 11:35They got bigger, they got tougher.
- 11:37They're not going to get pushed around like they normally have.
- 11:39They've got a top ten player in the league, maybe closer to five
- 11:43than he is to 10. And Caprisoff, both Fellino
- 11:46brothers, they went out and got a guy that was like 6667.
- 11:49Mccarran's his name from Nashville.
- 11:51He can play, but he can also. He doesn't take any crap and he
- 11:55said he's going to stick up for his teammates.
- 11:57So I love this guy, the make up of this Wild hockey club.
- 12:01So they've got a chance and if they want to get home ice
- 12:04advantage, they best win tonight.
- 12:06I do have a hockey question for you because I was looking at my
- 12:09pending bets after we got. Not.
- 12:12Well, I got Anheim Ducks to make the play.
- 12:14I knew you had. That Yep.
- 12:15So got that one in the pocket. A couple of that.
- 12:18Doesn't look as home free as it did a couple of weeks.
- 12:20Yeah, it's not it's not a free square at this point that it
- 12:22looked like it was for quite a long while.
- 12:25I have your jets to make the playoffs when when you were poo
- 12:29pooing him at one point I'm like I got to get involved here at
- 12:32some point. He's way too negative on it.
- 12:34Couple other Western Conference ones couple long shots on like
- 12:37the sharks. I think the Ducks one out and of
- 12:41course the Golden Knights were always going to be part of My
- 12:43Portfolio, but I had one because it was you and my palm some
- 12:46Friday talking about and my. Obligatory one question, right
- 12:50Talk hockey. And so I got the backup goalie
- 12:55to win the What's the trophy for a goalie?
- 12:57Yeah. Yeah, Walsted at 100 to 1
- 13:00because you guys were talking about that.
- 13:01This guy was great. Yeah.
- 13:02What is the goaltending looking like for the Wild going into the
- 13:05play? Is it is it a timeshare?
- 13:07Is it going to be? Yeah, I think it probably, well,
- 13:09they'll pick one, but I'm not sure which one.
- 13:11You know what, watch tonight and who probably gets the cult
- 13:13between the pipes tonight. Be a good indicator which way
- 13:16they're going to go. Because Gustason's what, 48
- 13:20games and 33 for Walstead at this point?
- 13:23In the year going with Gus. That doesn't feel very.
- 13:25Good. No, I don't like your.
- 13:26Tickets on April 9th when you don't know who your guys going
- 13:30to be is that scary? Yeah, of.
- 13:31Course, of course, when you're still trying to decipher that
- 13:35and figure that out, who's this going to be?
- 13:37I've, I've had this away for a couple of days.
- 13:39I wanted to ask you this and this is just one of these polls
- 13:43that I clicked on and I liked it best play by play announcer of
- 13:47all time. Now they list 8 here.
- 13:51Here's the list. OK, and and to me, there's a
- 13:53glaring omission. Let's see if we're on the page.
- 13:56First of all, with the omit. Well, let me see how many of the
- 13:58eight you can get. Best play by.
- 14:02He's on there, yes. That's one Jack Buck.
- 14:05He is not national, and not necessarily.
- 14:13Cause Vince Scully. He's on the list.
- 14:15OK, he's on the list, but he did a lot of national things also.
- 14:17Yeah. So no, Jack Buck Is Joe Buck on
- 14:19there? No, that's the one.
- 14:20That's to me is. AI know.
- 14:22Swinging a. Miss we, we know that one,
- 14:23right? We know that he's number
- 14:25probably 1 for. You there's a couple of there's
- 14:26a couple of guy, at least two. I'm looking at this.
- 14:29There's three that are deceased. There are disease play by play
- 14:35wild world of sports wide world of sports guy.
- 14:38Kirk Gowdy, Yes. No, really.
- 14:40Yeah. Help me out here, Keith Jackson.
- 14:44Oh, of course, yes. Yeah, he's not dead, but Marv
- 14:47Albert Chick Hearn, Lakers announcer, right?
- 14:53Really, all I know about Chick Hearn is from Remember that
- 14:56Lakers HBO show that came out a couple of years.
- 14:58Ago I do. I don't.
- 14:59I don't think I watched it, but I did when you want talking.
- 15:02I did it was it was kooky and goofy and I absolutely loved it.
- 15:05But that's really all I know about Chick Hearn.
- 15:07I do not remember him at all as a play by.
- 15:10Play. So here, here's the eight on the
- 15:11list. I think it's these aren't
- 15:13alphabetical orders, So maybe this was this order that the
- 15:15vote came in. Vince Scully won Al Michaels,
- 15:19Mike Breen. I.
- 15:21All time. No.
- 15:22No, I agree. I don't know why.
- 15:24He's been with us for over 20 years now as the lead voice in
- 15:27the NBA and it's still just doesn't feel like that guy.
- 15:31He's good. Yes, he's good and the bangs are
- 15:33excellent, but just not forever. Reason hasn't captured me at
- 15:38that same. Keith Jackson, Chick Heard Marv
- 15:40Albert. Here's a Here's a here and now
- 15:42that made the list and I was I He belongs.
- 15:44Hide Eagle. Close.
- 15:47Not his kid, Not Noah. Yeah, Noah didn't make sense. 1
- 15:50Rundown for Mayan Eagle. One rundown for Mayan Eagle Jim
- 15:55Nance. No, no, no, no.
- 15:58As far as Westwood One's coverage or CBST Turner's
- 16:01coverage, who's the number two team behind Ion Eagle?
- 16:04Harlan, Yes. I love Harlan.
- 16:05I love Harlan. Yeah, I love Harlan.
- 16:07Doing anything, yes, absolutely. Right.
- 16:08And Pat Summerall's the other one that's on that list, and
- 16:11they were so good, man. They, him and Madden were so
- 16:13good. Great combination, understated
- 16:15and over for that. Tom Brookshire, I think it was
- 16:18his name. Yeah, I think Tom Brookshire was
- 16:21his name. And they apparently they weren't
- 16:27a real fond of putting a slug in the jug.
- 16:29Oh yes, a lot of late nights. A lot of late nights, those two
- 16:32casts. For me, just me, not what
- 16:35they've done, accomplishments out of that group, my #1 who
- 16:40would come down to Keith Jackson and Kevin Harlan.
- 16:44Kevin Harlan. He's so good.
- 16:46Did Timberwolves games when I was growing up when the
- 16:48Timberwolves were starting Noel. Michaels, huh?
- 16:51No. Me called the maybe the most
- 16:55famous game in sports. I was in utero at that time, so
- 16:59no, I know it doesn't quite resonate.
- 17:01But it but it but. It and I've never watched the
- 17:03full broadcast right, you know anything like that I mean.
- 17:05He's a young man at the time. Absolutely.
- 17:08He only called a few hockey games at that point.
- 17:11Right. That's a good point.
- 17:12Yeah, excellent point. He's, I mean, he's called so
- 17:15many big games. He was on.
- 17:17He's been. He's been everywhere on the NFL.
- 17:19Pretty much, yeah. Has he been CBS?
- 17:21Not sure. But he's he's called NFL
- 17:23forever. Obviously he's winding down.
- 17:25Marv, Albert. Like Marv?
- 17:28Yeah. I don't know, maybe you just get
- 17:30that ick factor from. Him.
- 17:32That's just it, right? There's a nick factor there.
- 17:35There's a nick. Factor there just kind of
- 17:37lingering in the back of your mind.
- 17:40Those would be my top 2. Out of that group, who's not in
- 17:43that group? Joe Buck.
- 17:45How do you leave him out? Joe Buck called every big game
- 17:48in the in this century. Yeah, he did.
- 17:51He's good. In every World Series game.
- 17:53He's good. I, I like Joe Buck a lot.
- 17:55You love Joe Buck. I love Joe Buck.
- 17:57I don't understand the criticism.
- 17:59I don't. I'll never, never will.
- 18:01Have have you been on social media here over the last 15
- 18:03years? Just a tad.
- 18:06Yeah, just just a. Tad, how can you not understand
- 18:08it? It's everything.
- 18:09It's if, yeah, it's I guess, I don't know, I guess that's the
- 18:13case. But anyway, pretty good list.
- 18:15But certainly a couple of guys that make you wonder, right?
- 18:20Mike Green and Chick Hearn Regional yes now big region Yes
- 18:25with with with chick or should. Did he do anything else?
- 18:28I don't, I don't know if he was part of the coverage like on the
- 18:3170s on CBS, you know, or something like that before by
- 18:34time and I I certainly don't remember him at that level.
- 18:37And if you're going to have that list and you're going to have
- 18:40regional guys to not have Vince Scully, well.
- 18:43He's on but. Does that have Jack Buck?
- 18:46Yeah. That feels like a huge miss.
- 18:48I mean, come on, 1991, I just got one and we'll see you
- 18:51tomorrow night. We'll talk about an iconic call.
- 18:54I know it's what's. What's going on tomorrow night?
- 18:56Game 6 Kirby home run get get tomorrow night.
- 19:01No his call. Oh.
- 19:02We'll see you tomorrow. I thought maybe the Cardinals.
- 19:05OK, I got you. I got you.
- 19:07I thought the Twins and the Braves were playing.
- 19:08Again. And then when his son took the
- 19:10line. He did it last year, two years
- 19:12ago 3. Years ago, oh, he did it.
- 19:14Way back, four years ago, he did it. 12 years ago, the Cardinals
- 19:17Rangers World Series, wasn't it? No, when he.
- 19:19More recent than that, hasn't he?
- 19:21He will see you tomorrow night. But he used.
- 19:23That he used pops line. Yes, absolutely.
- 19:25I get it. Oh, I thought the Braves and the
- 19:27Twins are about to play again tomorrow or something.
- 19:31I just got text about Mike and Mike Emerick.
- 19:34Doc Emerick. I know it's hot.
- 19:36You, you would have to be able to help me there.
- 19:37I, I know the verbiage that he used and it was fascinating.
- 19:40He's phenomenal, the descriptors and you know, I just.
- 19:43Yeah, he was phenomenal. That would be 1.
- 19:46You would have to help me out. All right, we're going to head
- 19:49to the Twin Cities. Dane Mazatani coming up next.
- 19:52A lot of stuff with Dane. Look forward to catching up on
- 19:56the Vikings, on the Twins, who've now won three in a row.
- 19:59Do they keep it going today or they off today?
- 20:01They have one more. Aw, man.
- 20:04Was it night game? No, it's coming up here in 20
- 20:06minutes. First pitch as Jack Flaherty
- 20:09will get the ball for the Tigers against Mick Abel.
- 20:12One of those guys they got for a the bullpen arms that they sold
- 20:15away. Johan Duran that was one of the
- 20:17headliners and Nick Abel. Young guy throws hard, hasn't
- 20:21been able to put it together. 24 years old.
- 20:23He has not been very good to this point this year for the
- 20:25Twins, but going for a four-game sweep against the Tigers.
- 20:29He's a four gamer. So yesterday on Inside the
- 20:34Numbers and Lucas has now taken over for you, Bob.
- 20:37Costas there's another one. That's a good one, play by play.
- 20:40I don't think I'm quite at the same realm though, though he did
- 20:42plenty of it and he still does it with baseball.
- 20:44Yeah, I think him as a studio guy more.
- 20:47Major League Baseball, good or bad, who are the most
- 20:50disappointing teams or the most surprising teams for you in each
- 20:55of the leagues? Because it might be the Tigers
- 20:57for me. As a disappointment.
- 20:59Absolutely. I, I know the Red Sox are off to
- 21:01a slow start. I I get that Seattle's off to a
- 21:03slow start, but. How about the Jays?
- 21:07They should have won the World Series.
- 21:08They were an inch away, and if Aleppo leaves the bank
- 21:12millisecond earlier, they win. Here's why I would say that they
- 21:16got swept by the White Sox. The schedule dependent part of
- 21:20it, right? They lost two or three to the
- 21:21Rockies. Yes, absolutely.
- 21:22And this is in trying. Right, right at home, at home
- 21:26where you're thinking, well, a minimum are five and one here,
- 21:28absolutely the Mariners, they can't hit right.
- 21:33I I think that is a huge. So who were yours?
- 21:37It was the Tigers for me, yeah, In terms of good, it's the
- 21:41Yankees. But they're the only team in the
- 21:43American League that's playing well.
- 21:45Who else is playing well? Guardians, I guess.
- 21:48Trent, this is crazy. Do you know how many teams in
- 21:52the American League are above 500?
- 21:54Three. I saw that on Twitter too this
- 21:55morning. Yeah.
- 21:56You did, yeah. Three teams isn't.
- 21:58That Yankees, Guardians and Rangers are the only three teams
- 22:02above 500. It's absolutely nuts.
- 22:05What about the National League Braves?
- 22:08Oh God, there's three in the East.
- 22:09Right. Marlins, Mets and Braves.
- 22:13Central Division. Reds, Brewers.
- 22:15Cart Everybody but the Cubs. Everybody but the Cubs, who
- 22:19battled back to five. 100, that's who tweeted that.
- 22:21That's really good yeah, that's really good.
- 22:23Just. Just came across that
- 22:25disappointing in the National League, I guess.
- 22:28The Phillies, yeah, they're still 6.
- 22:31That says, it's not like they're followed out of favor or
- 22:33anything like that. Could you put the Cubs in there
- 22:36now? They won two straight.
- 22:37Right. Yeah.
- 22:38If we would have said this on Tuesday, absolutely they'd be
- 22:41part of that. Conference factor in the Kate
- 22:42Horton injury. The news there?
- 22:45Birchie tweeted. He's going to join us.
- 22:47By the way, 35 minutes. Always love our conversation
- 22:49with Tommy Wiggins. Was supposed to start here on
- 22:51Friday and they scratched him. Oh really?
- 22:54What does that mean? Kind of a holding pattern.
- 22:56Well, I wonder if we need him over the weekend.
- 22:58They, the the Cubs and one of the scouts who every time he
- 23:02reached out to, kind of spun it differently.
- 23:05But I'm wondering if something's up here, right?
- 23:08Make the call, get the young guy out there because what does the
- 23:11rotation look like now going forward for the Cubs tomorrow?
- 23:14Gonna be in on gotta. Yep, yeah.
- 23:15Afternoon, Cabrera, And then I don't remember who starts Tayon
- 23:20Tayon on Sunday as the Pirates are in town.
- 23:22Do they miss schemes? They must.
- 23:25Yeah, it's Chandler on Sunday, Saturday it is Ashcroft and
- 23:29tomorrow it is Ludinsky. So they built the Miskeens, but
- 23:34they also have a wrap around because they play the Phillies
- 23:36again on Monday. Could that be potentially the
- 23:38spot they're holding a mouth? Oh, Wiggins, Yes, I gotcha.
- 23:43Or are they looking long relief? A lot of different directions
- 23:45this obviously can go. We'll talk to Tommy coming up to
- 23:48start our number two of our program.
- 23:50We'll do some WNBA. He was Scott Agnes at 1:30.
- 23:53We're going to head to the Twin Cities next.
- 23:55Dane Mazatani, St. Paul Pioneer Press, Vikings,
- 23:58Twins and Wild Conversation when we come back on the Iowa Sports
- 24:02Radio Network, right, 1230. Miller Condon, welcome back to
- 24:10the Iowa Sports Radio Network. Wherever listening in the state
- 24:12of Iowa, any of our fine affiliates.
- 24:15We're grateful that you are. Coming up.
- 24:17We'll talk to Tommy Birch covers the Iowa Cubs.
- 24:20What plans are they making? Who's catching Tommy's eye?
- 24:22Who perhaps ticketed for the Chicago Cubs?
- 24:25And he covers Iowa State women's basketball.
- 24:27The latest on what's going on with Bill Fennelly's roster.
- 24:30Coming up top of the hour, let's head north.
- 24:32Dane Mazatani, St. Paul Pioneer Press,
- 24:34twincities.com Dane Trenton, Ken, thank you as always for
- 24:37giving us some time here today. How you been, Dane?
- 24:41I'm good, I'm good. I'm sitting on my couch watching
- 24:43the Masters so I can't complain. Life is good absolutely you know
- 24:47I'm going to start hockey because we Trent and I brought
- 24:49it up early in the program what a massive game it is tonight as
- 24:53they hope to get home ice advantage for the first round of
- 24:56their playoffs because that's like it or not you're going to
- 24:59see Dallas round one the winner to get in all likelihood
- 25:01Colorado, but home ice advantage would be huge.
- 25:05I think the only chance that Minnesota has to wrestle it away
- 25:08would be to win tonight on the road in Dallas.
- 25:11This is a huge game in the NHL Central Division.
- 25:16Yeah, and you have to win tonight if you want home ice
- 25:19advantage. That's that's 100% true.
- 25:22But I think more than anything tonight, like it just kind of
- 25:25gives you a little bit of a sense of what's to come in a
- 25:29week, week and a half. I expect both teams to play
- 25:33really hard. I expect it to be a physical
- 25:35game. If I'm Minnesota, like I'm
- 25:38rolling out my third and you know, that beefed up fourth line
- 25:41and I'm being extremely physical with Dallas.
- 25:44I'm letting them know, hey, we're here taking any liberties.
- 25:48But you know, this is a week away from from when it gets
- 25:52really, really tough in here. So I'm I'm telling Marcus
- 25:56Felino, Nick Felino, AJ McCarron, Hey, go lay on Jason
- 26:00Robertson, you know, go, go, go, you know, finish your check on
- 26:04Wyatt Johnson. So it's a big game.
- 26:07And then the Wild want to win it.
- 26:09But I think more than anything, you just want to one, get out of
- 26:12it healthy to send a message. The two points would obviously
- 26:16be a huge, huge bonus. Home ice advantage is going to
- 26:19be, you know, paramount. I think we would do with the way
- 26:22the Wilder played at home. But yeah, I think it's just
- 26:26going to be a really good game tonight.
- 26:27I will be posted up watching. The question that I have why is
- 26:31this year different? Why is this wild team different
- 26:34than the one that we've seen so many times make the playoffs and
- 26:36then bow out in the first round? What makes them a contender in
- 26:39your mind? I think Quinn Hughes first and
- 26:44foremost, I think they've they've never had anybody like
- 26:47Quinn Hughes on the blue line ever in franchise history.
- 26:50And like just look at what it's done to the blue line.
- 26:53Brock favorites, a very, very good player, going to be one of
- 26:56the best ever put on the wild uniform if he stays here his
- 26:59whole career. But when you can put Brock Faber
- 27:02and bump him down a spot on the blue line, he can be your number
- 27:062 defenseman. And you know, Spurgeon and
- 27:09Brodeen can can be that number 3 and #4 and then you could have
- 27:13that beefed up third pairing with Middleton and the Gojin or
- 27:17Jet Petri, if he's going to play, it just makes everything
- 27:20else go. And then Quinn Hughes is the
- 27:22engine of this team, you know, from the back end.
- 27:27So I think it starts with him. But then you look at Crow Capri
- 27:31shot, obviously in the jump Matt Boldy has taken, you can make an
- 27:34argument. And I don't even think it would
- 27:36be an argument. I think it's pretty inarguable
- 27:39that Crow, Capri shot, Matt Boldy and Quinn Hughes are the
- 27:41three best players the franchise has ever had.
- 27:44I mean, they all have them right now at the same time.
- 27:46So that's why this year feels different to me.
- 27:49Unfortunately, with the wonky NHL playoff format, they have to
- 27:54play this like the third best team in the NHL.
- 27:56You know, it's unbelievable. Yeah, I couldn't disagree with
- 27:59anything you said. I love what they did.
- 28:00They got bigger, they got nastier with Fellino coming over
- 28:04to join his brother and as you said, Mccarran and Capri softs
- 28:08anywhere. He's a top ten player.
- 28:09I think he's closer to five than he is 10.
- 28:12They got a lot going. I think they can win a Cup and
- 28:14I've been since the trade deadline that that this team has
- 28:17a legitimate chance to win a Stanley Cup.
- 28:19We shall see where it goes. Let's let's let's talk about the
- 28:23Vikings as we approach what, two weeks from tonight?
- 28:26Now, is the round one of the NFL draft two or three?
- 28:29Is it three or two, 2, two weeks?
- 28:33Yeah. Ready or not, here we come.
- 28:35Where do you, where do they thinking right now as they, you
- 28:40know, are in their war room trying to figure out where, who
- 28:42might be available? What do you think that they're
- 28:45going to do, Dane? Yeah, I mean, you read any mock
- 28:48draft and they're going to take the Oregon safety, Dylan
- 28:51Thienemann. He's he's been the guy I've seen
- 28:54mocked to them almost across the board, almost universally with
- 28:58anybody who's put together a mock draft safety makes sense.
- 29:03Harrison Smith hasn't officially retired.
- 29:05Don't know that we'll get an official announcement.
- 29:07I think he's one of those guys that could just hang around and
- 29:10maybe late in the season if they need somebody, you know, he
- 29:13could be that guy. So I don't think we'll get a
- 29:17Harrison Smith is officially retiring.
- 29:19But effectively, I think the Vikings have to prepare as if
- 29:23they will not have him on the roster.
- 29:24So Dylan Theaniman makes sense from Oregon, kind of a rangy
- 29:28safety. You can play in that system.
- 29:31He feels pretty pro ready for me right away.
- 29:34So it's kind of a seamless transition to go from Harrison
- 29:37Smith to to a young rookie. But I listening to Rob Burzynski
- 29:42talk at the the owners meetings last week, week and a half ago,
- 29:46I think it was like he made an interesting point in that the
- 29:53Vikings are in a position right now where where they feel really
- 29:57good about their roster, but they don't feel so good about
- 30:00it. And that they can just write off
- 30:02we don't need this player. We don't need this position.
- 30:06He almost said. He works backwards.
- 30:07People like to talk about the draft is position of need.
- 30:13Rob Burzynski and the Vikings, it sounds like they're going to
- 30:15go almost with a position we don't need.
- 30:17Like how many positions on the team would we not benefit from
- 30:21just taking up, you know, the best player on the board?
- 30:24I mean, there's very few when you when you look at it like
- 30:27they're probably not taking a left tackle.
- 30:28They have Christian there. So, you know, they're probably
- 30:30not taking, you know, a quarterback just because of of
- 30:34where the things have have gone this offseason and then the
- 30:37investment you put in Kyler Murray and JJ McCarthy.
- 30:39But you could make a strong argument that any other position
- 30:43makes sense. So I don't want to just pigeon
- 30:45hole them to safety, even though that's what it seems like a lot
- 30:48of the mock drafts are doing that.
- 30:50I think they could just go truly best player available on the
- 30:54board when they're on the clock at 18.
- 30:56Or, you know, maybe more prudently trade back, try to
- 31:00gather some picks. Depending on who you listen to,
- 31:03who you consume for your NFL draft preview coverage.
- 31:07It seems like talent is pretty synonymous or between 20 and 40.
- 31:12So maybe you trade back and pick up an extra pick or two here.
- 31:16But yeah, I mean, I think they get their best player on the
- 31:18board when they're on the clock. It feels somewhat dangerous
- 31:23because Dane, you do it, we do it.
- 31:26Oh man, this team had a great draft and then you look a couple
- 31:29years down the line and actually isn't good.
- 31:31You're going into a draft without an official GM.
- 31:33If Burzynski gets the job because he has a quote UN quote
- 31:36great draft, we're not going to know for a couple of years if
- 31:38that's actually the case here. Take us in a little bit.
- 31:41The decision to go interim here, not go out right away after they
- 31:44got rid of Quincy and and make a decision on AGM and just how
- 31:48this structurally is going to look and and the chances that
- 31:51Burzynski ultimately gets this job as the head GM.
- 31:54Yeah, I think when the the will when, when ownership made the
- 31:58decision to fire Quaisy Doffman pretty surprisingly pretty out
- 32:02of left field, at least timing wise.
- 32:05When you when you read kind of between the lines of his tenure
- 32:08in Minnesota and you know, things I've heard like the
- 32:11firing of Quaisy Doffman tends to make a little bit of sense,
- 32:15but the timing did not make any sense to me.
- 32:17So I think the ownership when when you make a big decision
- 32:20like that kind of out of left field, you want stability, you
- 32:24want right away. Let's just kind of like get
- 32:28things back to to cruising altitude.
- 32:31I mean, that's what Rob Brzezinski represents.
- 32:33He represents somebody who's been there for 20 years, 20 plus
- 32:36years since 1999. I mean, he can kind of navigate
- 32:40this storm, if you will, right now.
- 32:43And I think kind of in some ways give you a little bit of a sense
- 32:47of what he could look like as as a general manager, as a leader
- 32:50of that front office. So I understand the the idea of,
- 32:54well, should they have just gone out as soon as they fire quasi
- 32:57and tried to make a higher? But I think at that point then
- 33:00you're you're already deep into the draft, right?
- 33:03And you're if you're hiring a new GM, they're being thrown
- 33:06into the deep end with really very little say and or knowledge
- 33:10about the draft process or where where the Vikings are at and in
- 33:14the draft process at that point. So it's not ideal, but I think
- 33:18when they made that decision to fire quasi, they were making
- 33:22that with the idea that we'll just kind of weather this storm.
- 33:27Robertson is incredibly talented, talent evaluator, cap
- 33:33guy obviously, but more than anything, he's a leader who can
- 33:36bring people together. And I think that's what Quasi
- 33:38lacked more than anything. So right now they're looking for
- 33:41a leader. Maybe if if Robertson wants a
- 33:44job, if if the will see him fit, he will do that leader in the
- 33:48long term on the right now they're content with that in the
- 33:50short term and then they'll do that.
- 33:52Full search here. Coming up in a month or so.
- 33:55Talking Minnesota sports with her friend Dane Mazatani, St.
- 33:57Paul Pioneer Press twincities.com Dane, once we get
- 34:01to late summer and the and the Vikings are in training camp, is
- 34:04this a legitimate quarterback battle?
- 34:07Or are they saying the right thing but knowing at the same
- 34:09time it's going to be Kyler Murray?
- 34:11How do you see this? How do you see this?
- 34:13Is it a legitimate battle for #1?
- 34:17I don't think so. I think they're going to frame.
- 34:19I think they're going to frame it like that and they should
- 34:22like in March and I just run into April.
- 34:25There's there's no really no reason to to declare Kyler
- 34:28Murray your starter because there is still, you know, some
- 34:34threads of unknown with him if he's going to take to the
- 34:37offense, if he's going to be able to kind of navigate things
- 34:41in the way you want him to. So like, it doesn't make sense
- 34:45to declare Tyler Murray the starter and then say things go
- 34:49sideways and OTAs and training camp and then you have to kind
- 34:52of renege on that. So I understand where they're
- 34:55at. I think it's good messaging.
- 34:57I think it does light a fire under JJ McCarthy.
- 35:00Everything I'm hearing is that he's ready to go for this
- 35:03competition. And even if it ends up not
- 35:07really being a competition, because I think Kyler Murray,
- 35:09when when we're out there in the summer, who's getting the first
- 35:12team snaps of all the, you know, the first person getting the
- 35:15first team snaps, I think it'll be Kyler Murray.
- 35:17And I don't foresee him giving that positioning up the rest of
- 35:21the way. But I think right now you frame
- 35:24it as a competition. You don't hand anything to Kyler
- 35:27Murray, first of all, and then you also ignite a little bit of
- 35:30a fire under Jaden McCarthy. It makes sense.
- 35:32But look, Kyler Murray didn't come here to be a backup.
- 35:36He could have gone other places to be a backup.
- 35:38He came here to start. I think the Vikings understand
- 35:40that. I think he obviously understands
- 35:43that. So as as long as if, you know,
- 35:46like I said, things don't go sideways, I I would expect him
- 35:49to be your starter Week 1. We started the conversation with
- 35:52a look at the winter sport in the state of hockey with hockey.
- 35:56Let's jump over to basketball. The Timberwolves locked up the
- 35:58number six seed trying to get healthy as they make their way
- 36:02down the stretch here. back-to-back runs to the Western
- 36:04Conference Finals. Going to have to do it on the
- 36:06road again this season. Thoughts on the Timberwolves as
- 36:09they get ready for the playoffs after the regular season
- 36:11concludes. Yeah, it's kind of a frustrating
- 36:14year for them. Like I know there's a six seed,
- 36:17a couple of things break right in their favor down the stretch
- 36:20and they probably could have got up to three, but now they're
- 36:22locked into 6. It just feels like they left
- 36:25some meat on the bone. They were one of the healthiest
- 36:27teams in in the Western Conference fans of the last
- 36:30month when when Anthony Edwards and JD Mcdaniel's have gone
- 36:33down. I think they could have given
- 36:35themselves a little bit better positioning to maybe lock up
- 36:37that three from the jump if they would have just been more
- 36:39consistent. But they've been very Jekyll and
- 36:42Hyde this year. The glass half full approaches.
- 36:47Well, they've been there. They've done that.
- 36:49Very few teams are as proven as the Timberwolves are heading
- 36:52into this playoffs. The glass half empty is like,
- 36:56are you going to be able to actually just flip that switch
- 36:58and turn it on? It seems like a lot of people
- 37:03who are approaching this playoff run with some optimism are
- 37:06saying, well, they're going to be able to do it.
- 37:08They've done it for the past two years.
- 37:12It might not be so easy if you hook Denver and they're playing
- 37:14incredible right now. So it just it just feels a
- 37:17little bit like a missed opportunity.
- 37:19And obviously I have my my trepidation or reservations
- 37:23going into the the playoffs, but they could, they could shut me
- 37:26up real quick by just putting their foot on the gas and, and,
- 37:30and doing what they've done the last two playoff playoff runs.
- 37:33So it'll come down to health more than anything for them.
- 37:36I think they're going to manage it the rest of the way with
- 37:38Anthony Edwards. Jane McDaniels played last
- 37:41night, which is good. I don't know if he'll play the
- 37:44final 2-3 games of the regular season because you probably want
- 37:47to keep him healthy. If the Wolves are healthy,
- 37:49they'll be able to punch with anybody.
- 37:51I just have a little bit of questions of are they going to
- 37:54be able to flip the switch this time?
- 37:56They've just been so up and down this year.
- 37:59Leave the Twins for Trent has his team has won three in a row.
- 38:03Don't look out right. But I want to ask you about 1-1
- 38:06more guy and you don't have to spend a ton of time on it
- 38:07because Trent and I both loved the SOMU when he was in
- 38:09Illinois. I was a hell of a player.
- 38:11I thought I was going to be a great pro.
- 38:13Now he's AT Wolf and I guess so far so good, right, since he's
- 38:17come over from the Bulls. Yeah, a really good player.
- 38:20I think he's he's also somebody who you see a lot of these moves
- 38:24at the trade deadline. It's a rental.
- 38:26I don't think the the the Timberwolves CIO is a rental.
- 38:30I think they see him as part of their future.
- 38:32He's proven to be somebody who can do it on both ends of the
- 38:36floor. He can play with some pace.
- 38:38He defends in some ways. I know he's like kind of more of
- 38:42a combo guard, but he does make sense as maybe like your pseudo
- 38:46point guard. Next, Anthony Edwards moving
- 38:48forward. I think he's a really, really
- 38:51good player. And yeah, they're very, very
- 38:53savvy move by Tim Conley in the front office.
- 38:56I've always, I've always liked him to grow up in the suburbs of
- 38:59Chicago. So following him in Illinois,
- 39:02liked him with the Bulls. He's kind of made himself into a
- 39:05really good player. But he's he's he's he's another
- 39:07X Factor. I know it'll come down to health
- 39:09from the Stars, but if you get a good playoff series out of IO,
- 39:13you you could beat anybody. The Twins have won three in a
- 39:16row. They're just underway against
- 39:17the Tigers, trying to get a four-game sweep against the
- 39:20prohibitive favorite coming into the year.
- 39:22The bullpen is not very good. The rotation with Taj Bradley's
- 39:25been outstanding. Him and of course Joe Ryan up
- 39:28there. You got Bailey over Simeons,
- 39:30Wood, Richardson. You're feeling good about that.
- 39:32Anything, though, that's popped? I still don't believe this is
- 39:34going to be any kind of contender, even for a wild card
- 39:36berth this season. But what's jumped out to you
- 39:39here? The first 12 games of the year?
- 39:41Yeah, I mean, I I think it's just fun.
- 39:43It shows you that like it's it's interesting when we project out
- 39:49of this team could lose 100 games and then they win three in
- 39:52a row and it's like, wow, maybe they're pretty good.
- 39:54It shows you how long the baseball season is more than
- 39:57anything. But I look what stood out to me
- 40:01is man, I wish Pablo didn't blow out his elbow because this this
- 40:05pitching staff all of a sudden looks like it could have been
- 40:07pretty good with him as your ace with you know, Joe Ryan,
- 40:11obviously, as you're also ace. And if Cos Bradley is what he's
- 40:17proven us he is for the first obviously very small sample
- 40:21size. It just makes you wonder like
- 40:23how could they have been a surprising team?
- 40:25I think they're. A couple of heavy hitters away
- 40:28from being a contender, like you said, for, you know, obviously a
- 40:32World Series, but even a wild card birth.
- 40:34But that's what that's kind of what I've come back to as
- 40:36they've they've strung together this little fun winning streak
- 40:39is man, if they didn't lose their race, maybe I'd have a
- 40:42little bit more belief in them. But I think they're going to be
- 40:46a plucky bunch all year. I think they're probably going
- 40:48to be a team that frustrates for prolonged stretches.
- 40:52But there's there is some talent in the line up still.
- 40:55And if guys like Royce Lewis can can find it, Brooksley can find
- 40:59it. I know they've they've been in
- 41:03there kind of in a downturn in their development.
- 41:05But if they can figure it out and kind of find an upswing,
- 41:09they could string together enough wins to at least not be
- 41:13irrelevant. It would be nice if they could
- 41:16be flirting with, you know, 500 throughout the season.
- 41:20That might be a big ask, but you'll you'll take these, these
- 41:23pocket moments of optimism where you can get them.
- 41:27Also, another thing that stood out, they did the $2.00 beer
- 41:29special. I mean, they stole like 24,000
- 41:33beers, something like that. So it's I might have to
- 41:36makemytrip my way way over there when it gets a little warmer.
- 41:39That sounds good. Hey, Jane, thanks for popping on
- 41:41back to the Masters. Dane Mazatani, we appreciate
- 41:43what you do for us. Thank you.
- 41:46Anytime guys. Good.
- 41:46To talk to you, Dan Mazatani, St.
- 41:48Paul Pioneer Press. I got a nugget for you all
- 41:50right, Matt Walner slugging the ball hard when he hits it
- 41:53doesn't hit it very often. He has struck out this year in
- 41:5612 games. How many bats?
- 42:0052 OK, 49 bets officially 52 plate appearances.
- 42:03He has struck out 25 times. He is on pace for 337
- 42:10strikeouts. One of two more than that, a
- 42:16swing in a minute. But Trent, when he hits him, he
- 42:18does. He makes contact look out.
- 42:21Back to finish up the hour, Miller and Condon, Iowa Sports
- 42:23Radio Network Miller and Condon, final couple
- 42:41of minutes of our first hour of the program.
- 42:43Tommy Burch. Variety of topics for Tommy,
- 42:46including the Iowa Cubs. Are they playing this afternoon?
- 42:50Don't know. Don't know.
- 42:51I'm not sure they're going to be playing, period.
- 42:53Rain come outside and rain's coming for like a week.
- 42:57This just it. First softball tournament of the
- 42:59year coming up this weekend. Well, it's scheduled to be and
- 43:01then we'll talk to Scott Agnes, dual WNBA with Scott coming up
- 43:06at about 1:30. Trent, we'll make some plays
- 43:08just before we slide out of here at 2.
- 43:10The defending champion, Rory McIlroy off to a pretty good
- 43:13start. Oh, yeah.
- 43:14There was a lot of back and forth as to what to expect from
- 43:16him. You know, he finally got that
- 43:18monkey off his back. His He's been a different player
- 43:21since then. He certainly was after he won.
- 43:24He wasn't, I don't know. I'm not saying it wasn't
- 43:27serious, but seemed to, you know, have maybe golf wasn't his
- 43:31primary focus on the court or on the links rather.
- 43:35But we'll see where it goes from here.
- 43:37Sam Burns and Patrick Reed remain at the top of the list.
- 43:42Do you have anybody that's off to a good start?
- 43:43Yeah, anybody that you bet that's getting clubbed early.
- 43:46Xander I was on Dechambeau and he was 4 over at last.
- 43:50I saw so and. He was three over.
- 43:52Yeah, he was, and I think he was 4.
- 43:54Over. I just watched him, he got
- 43:55trouble building a sand trap. Oh, did he?
- 43:57And he missed a putt earlier for par.
- 43:59He's been all over the place. But yeah, Xander's my guy.
- 44:01That's what I'm feeling good about.
- 44:03And I had nothing on Lowry, even though I usually like him.
- 44:05His form wasn't very good. It's one day 2.
- 44:08Don't overreact. No, I know you.
- 44:10Just want to keep your head above water and for guys like De
- 44:12Shambo, that is not the case. Sheffler getting ready to tee
- 44:15off, excited about that and seeing what he can do because I
- 44:19did have to take a little bit on him.
- 44:21Did you? What did you end up doing to win
- 44:22it? So I took one of the profit
- 44:24boosts over at DK and so I took in and got his odds up to like
- 44:27plus 680. You know what, I had a top five
- 44:29at plus 140 that was already locked in.
- 44:31But I'm like, I just, I need to have a.
- 44:33Little at that price you almost have to right.
- 44:35Yeah, I mean it's. I just start walking off like I
- 44:37got to. Yeah, he's coming off the
- 44:39practice range of like, I have to have something.
- 44:42I mean, normally you, you hate betting or anything that's short
- 44:45of a price, but when it when it's the best player in the
- 44:48world and yeah, you kick yourself if he goes off at 5-6
- 44:53to 1/5 and 1/2 to 1 and he does get there as he's absolutely
- 44:57qualified to do. All right, Hour 2 is coming up
- 45:00next. Something that's been lingering,
- 45:02we'll get to maybe after Tommy. OK, We still haven't heard
- 45:06anything on our viral fool Garris.
- 45:07No. Or Milan man Chilovich, what's
- 45:10going on? It's weird, isn't it?
- 45:12Here's the. Thing both of these players not
- 45:14doing their teams any favours. Absolutely right.
- 45:18Our 2 coming up next Miller in Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio
- 45:21Network.
