- 0:00Speaker 1: On October 26, 1958, CBS Radio brought listeners episode 342
- 0:07Speaker 1: of Gunsmoke, The Tragedian. In Dodge City, Marshal Matt Dillon
- 0:12Speaker 1: must prepare for Brad Kyler's expected attempt to free his
- 0:16Speaker 1: jailed brother. At the same time, a down-and-out Shakespearean actor,
- 0:21Speaker 1: troubled by drink and accused of cheating at cards, becomes
- 0:25Speaker 1: involved in the town's affairs. William Conrad stars as Matt
- 0:30Speaker 1: Dillon with Parley Bear, Georgia Ellis, and Howard McNear. Les
- 0:35Speaker 1: Crutchfield wrote the script, and Norman MacDonald directed and produced.
- 0:40Speaker 1: We now take you back to the original broadcast.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Around Dodge City and in the territory on west, there's
- 0:57Speaker 2: just one way to handle the killers and the spoilers,
- 1:01Speaker 2: and that's with a U.S. Marshal and the smell of
- 1:03Speaker 2: gun smoke.
- 1:04Speaker 3: © BF-WATCH TV 2021.
- 1:23Speaker 2: Gunsmoke, starring William Conrad. The story of the violence that
- 1:27Speaker 2: moved west with young America. And the story of a
- 1:31Speaker 2: man who moved with it.
- 1:32Speaker 4: I'm that man.
- 1:34Speaker 5: Matt Dillon, United States Marshal. The first man they look
- 1:38Speaker 5: for and the last they want to meet. It's a
- 1:41Speaker 5: chancy job. And it makes a man watchful. And a
- 1:46Speaker 5: little lonely.
- 2:02Speaker 6: You know, Mr.
- 2:03Speaker 7: Dillon, I sure would feel a lot safer if we
- 2:06Speaker 7: had Brad Kyler locked up there in jail like his brother.
- 2:09Speaker 8: So would I, Chester.
- 2:11Speaker 6: You'd think if he was around town, somebody would have
- 2:13Speaker 6: saw him.
- 2:14Speaker 4: Maybe he doesn't want to be seen.
- 2:16Speaker 6: I'm mighty upset and feeling not knowing if any minute
- 2:19Speaker 6: you might get a bullet.
- 2:20Speaker 8: In the back.
- 2:21Speaker 5: And that's probably the way you'll try it, too, in
- 2:23Speaker 5: the back. Now, let's take another look in the long branch.
- 2:26Speaker 3: All right.
- 2:38Speaker 7: Hello, Matt.
- 2:39Speaker 4: Hello, Kitty.
- 2:40Speaker 9: Have you caught Brad Kyler yet, Matt?
- 2:43Speaker 4: I haven't even found a trace of him, Kitty.
- 2:45Speaker 8: Oh, Matt.
- 2:46Speaker 4: Seems to me you could make.
- 2:47Speaker 6: His brother talk.
- 2:48Speaker 4: Not so far. You got him locked up in jail.
- 2:51Speaker 9: Isn't that some way of forcing him?
- 2:53Speaker 4: Take an axe handle to him, do you mean?
- 2:55Speaker 10: Oh, no.
- 2:56Speaker 6: Don't write down to it, Miss Kitty. I don't think
- 2:58Speaker 6: even that'll break him down. Them collar boys is tripping
- 3:01Speaker 6: on you. Brad and Ray's both.
- 3:03Speaker 1: They're just a pair of cold-blooded killers.
- 3:05Speaker 6: Sure they are.
- 3:07Speaker 10: I'm proud of it.
- 3:08Speaker 7: Ray sits over there in his cell, brags about the
- 3:10Speaker 7: things he's done, admits all of it.
- 3:12Speaker 5: He says he'll never stand trial, though, that Brad will get.
- 3:15Speaker 4: Him out before then.
- 3:16Speaker 10: Oh, he's just bluffing, Matt.
- 3:18Speaker 11: No.
- 3:19Speaker 4: Brad will make a try, at least.
- 3:21Speaker 8: Matt. Oh, hello, Doc.
- 3:23Speaker 9: Hey, Matt, if you want to stop a big fight,
- 3:25Speaker 9: maybe a killing, you better move in on that poker
- 3:28Speaker 9: game over in the corner.
- 3:31Speaker 4: Looks peaceful enough to me.
- 3:32Speaker 10: No, no, no, it isn't. It's crooked, Matt.
- 3:34Speaker 9: I smelled it, so I pulled out just now. And
- 3:37Speaker 9: some of the others are getting kind of itchy, too.
- 3:39Speaker 9: I think Ben Stoddard's about to call a showdown.
- 3:41Speaker 4: Who's doing the cheating?
- 3:43Speaker 8: Well, I figure it's that.
- 3:44Speaker 2: You see that old fellow over there by the wall?
- 3:46Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 3:46Speaker 10: With the fancy vest and the soles off his boots?
- 3:49Speaker 4: Well, he's marked the.
- 3:50Speaker 10: Deck somehow, the way it looks to me.
- 3:52Speaker 5: You know who he is, sir?
- 3:53Speaker 10: No, no, no. He's a stranger.
- 3:54Speaker 9: He claims he's a big-time stage.
- 3:57Speaker 6: Actor back east.
- 3:58Speaker 10: But I think he's mostly hot air and bad whiskey.
- 4:02Speaker 4: All right, mister.
- 4:04Speaker 8: This has gone far enough.
- 4:05Speaker 4: There it is, Matt.
- 4:06Speaker 8: Yeah. You've been.
- 4:08Speaker 7: When an all-fired regular pursues.
- 4:11Speaker 4: Me, mister.
- 4:12Speaker 8: I beg your pardon, my dear sir.
- 4:14Speaker 4: Don't high-talk me, you fancy. All right, then, all of you.
- 4:18Speaker 4: Take it easy now. Now, what's the trouble?
- 4:20Speaker 10: This man's been cheating on us.
- 4:21Speaker 4: That's the trouble.
- 4:22Speaker 8: Sir, may I ask if you represent the law here?
- 4:26Speaker 4: I'm the U.S. Marshal.
- 4:27Speaker 8: Yeah. Who are you? I, sir, have.
- 4:30Speaker 11: The distinction of being Edward Vanderman, a name with which.
- 4:33Speaker 8: You are no doubt familiar.
- 4:35Speaker 4: No, I can't say that I am.
- 4:37Speaker 11: Then may I inform you, Marshal, that I am the
- 4:40Speaker 11: Edward Vanderman who has trod the boards for low these
- 4:44Speaker 11: many years before the crown.
- 4:45Speaker 8: Heads of Europe. Always to the wildest acclaim.
- 4:49Speaker 4: That's very interesting.
- 4:50Speaker 11: Twenty-three weeks as Hamlet at the Covent Garden Music Hall.
- 4:54Speaker 11: Thirty-one weeks in the unforgettable.
- 4:56Speaker 8: Role of Macbeth.
- 4:58Speaker 4: All right, but what about this poker game?
- 5:00Speaker 11: Well, it's a ridiculous accusation. I had the impression I
- 5:03Speaker 11: was playing with gentlemen instead of these coughing, haggling creatures.
- 5:08Speaker 8: Let me have him, Marshal.
- 5:09Speaker 4: Just let me and the boys take him out back.
- 5:11Speaker 6: For just five minutes.
- 5:13Speaker 4: How do you know he was cheating, Benjamin?
- 5:14Speaker 6: He was cheating.
- 5:15Speaker 8: We all know it.
- 5:18Speaker 10: Look at these cards.
- 5:19Speaker 4: Nick and Cliff and Cornard. Every one of them. He's
- 5:22Speaker 4: been working them over for the last hour. His luck's
- 5:25Speaker 4: been getting better all the time. How about his table
- 5:27Speaker 4: of steaks there? Most of that's yours? Most all of it.
- 5:31Speaker 4: You got only $ 5 to start with. All right, then
- 5:33Speaker 4: keep it and split it up however.
- 5:34Speaker 8: You figure it.
- 5:35Speaker 4: Come on, Vanderman.
- 5:36Speaker 8: I beg your pardon, sir?
- 5:37Speaker 4: Come on outside.
- 5:38Speaker 8: Now move.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Out this door.
- 5:45Speaker 4: Come on, Chester.
- 5:45Speaker 8: Yes, sir.
- 5:47Speaker 5: All right, Vanderman, I'm going to make this short. We
- 5:55Speaker 5: don't like card sharps and darts. You get out of
- 5:58Speaker 5: town tonight.
- 5:59Speaker 8: Sir, I am not a card sharp.
- 6:01Speaker 4: You were cheating, weren't you?
- 6:03Speaker 8: I was... Yes, I was cheating. But it was out
- 6:08Speaker 8: of desperation, sir.
- 6:09Speaker 11: That and a drink on an empty stomach.
- 6:13Speaker 8: Marshal, I can't get out of town. Oh, why not? Well,
- 6:17Speaker 8: to put it quite simply, sir, I am broke.
- 6:20Speaker 4: What?
- 6:21Speaker 8: A matter of unfortunate investments, you might say. At any rate...
- 6:26Speaker 8: Dodge City is the end of the line. I hadn't
- 6:28Speaker 8: the sense. As you can see, I'm not very well
- 6:32Speaker 8: equipped for walking.
- 6:33Speaker 4: When did you eat last?
- 6:35Speaker 8: Oh, approximately 24 hours ago.
- 6:38Speaker 4: All right.
- 6:41Speaker 5: Chester, take him over to the jail and give him
- 6:44Speaker 5: some of that stew that you made.
- 6:45Speaker 4: He can sleep on the cot tonight. Maybe we can
- 6:47Speaker 4: figure out something in the morning for him.
- 6:50Speaker 8: Oh, Marshal, you.
- 6:51Speaker 11: Have not only earned my undying gratitude, but I promise
- 6:56Speaker 11: I will never crimp another deck as.
- 6:58Speaker 8: Long as I live. Furthermore, you may call me Edward.
- 7:05Speaker 4: All right, Edward.
- 7:07Speaker 5: But you should save your gratitude until you taste that
- 7:10Speaker 5: stew at Chester's.
- 7:30Speaker 10: Michael, you've gone clean out of your mind.
- 7:32Speaker 4: Do you think so, Joe?
- 7:34Speaker 10: Instead of running that old fellow out of town, you
- 7:36Speaker 10: stand here and ask me to give him a job.
- 7:38Speaker 4: Joe, you need a waiter. You said so yesterday.
- 7:41Speaker 5: And where else are you going to find one who
- 7:42Speaker 5: can fill in his cook if you want to take
- 7:44Speaker 5: a morning.
- 7:44Speaker 4: Off now and then?
- 7:45Speaker 10: How do I know he can cook?
- 7:47Speaker 4: Well, he says he can. Try him out.
- 7:49Speaker 8: Well, what have you got to lose?
- 7:51Speaker 10: My restaurant, maybe. If he was to take a notion
- 7:53Speaker 10: to sell it while my back was turning.
- 7:55Speaker 6: Oh, don't you worry about that, Joe. Nobody'd buy it
- 7:58Speaker 6: once they got a look at all them cockroaches.
- 8:01Speaker 7: I got no more cockroaches than anybody else in Dodge.
- 8:04Speaker 6: Yeah, but yours is bigger.
- 8:05Speaker 4: That's because the food here is better. What do you say, Joe?
- 8:10Speaker 4: Edward's waiting outside. You want to give him a try?
- 8:13Speaker 10: I can't figure what you're up to, Marshal. Spending time
- 8:16Speaker 10: trying to get some stranger a job ain't got much
- 8:18Speaker 10: to do with law enforcement.
- 8:19Speaker 4: Well, it might have in the long run.
- 8:21Speaker 5: He was broke and desperate. That's why he cheated in
- 8:24Speaker 5: that card game. And he's still broke and desperate.
- 8:29Speaker 4: Now, how about it, Joe?
- 8:31Speaker 10: All right, Marshall. Call him in. Thanks, Joe.
- 8:38Speaker 4: Edward, come on in.
- 8:40Speaker 8: Hey, Joe.
- 8:42Speaker 6: Just don't get in no card games with him.
- 8:45Speaker 8: Why, that fellow came in from the bottom of the.
- 8:46Speaker 4: Edward, this is Joe Carpe, your new boss.
- 8:49Speaker 8: Mr.
- 8:50Speaker 7: Carpe, it's a dollar a day in grub that he
- 8:52Speaker 7: can sleep on a cot in a store room.
- 8:54Speaker 8: You, sir, are overwhelming in your generosity.
- 8:57Speaker 7: You can start out washing them dishes there.
- 8:59Speaker 8: Very well.
- 9:00Speaker 11: Unaccustomed as I am to exercising my unique talents in
- 9:04Speaker 11: a scullery, I nonetheless approach the task at hand with
- 9:07Speaker 11: a high heart and doughty courage.
- 9:10Speaker 8: Where is the soap?
- 9:12Speaker 10: Does he always talk this way? Yeah, mostly.
- 9:15Speaker 4: Come on, Chester. Thanks again, Joe.
- 9:18Speaker 8: Just one thing, Marshal.
- 9:20Speaker 11: Behind this mask of frivolity, I am eternally grateful to you.
- 9:26Speaker 10: Forget it, Edward.
- 9:28Speaker 11: Your trust, sir, is not misplaced. I will not disappoint you.
- 9:33Speaker 4: Drop by the jail when you get a chance, huh?
- 9:35Speaker 8: Let's go, Chester. Come, come, my good man. This way.
- 9:38Speaker 12: This way.
- 9:45Speaker 4: What's the matter, Chester? You don't look too happy. Aren't
- 9:47Speaker 4: you glad he got the job?
- 9:49Speaker 8: Well, Mr.
- 9:50Speaker 6: but I just suddenly remembered Brad Collier. You ain't forgot
- 9:53Speaker 6: about him, have you?
- 9:55Speaker 5: Chester, when a man like Collier is gunning for you,
- 9:58Speaker 5: you don't forget.
- 9:58Speaker 4: It too easy.
- 10:16Speaker 6: We got the tray all fixed, Mr.
- 10:18Speaker 8: Jones.
- 10:19Speaker 6: We can take it back to him whenever you're ready.
- 10:21Speaker 4: All right, Chester.
- 10:21Speaker 8: Let's get it over with.
- 10:24Speaker 6: I swear it sure ain't much pleasure to pick supper
- 10:26Speaker 6: for somebody that don't appreciate it.
- 10:28Speaker 5: A race cutter wouldn't appreciate anything we.
- 10:30Speaker 8: Did for him.
- 10:31Speaker 6: Bill don't have to be so mean about it.
- 10:33Speaker 5: Being mean is what got him in jail in the
- 10:35Speaker 5: first place.
- 10:38Speaker 4: Grace, here's your supper. What is it?
- 10:41Speaker 1: That same slop you've been bringing every night?
- 10:44Speaker 4: Whatever it is, it's what you get. Take it or
- 10:47Speaker 4: leave it. I'll take it.
- 10:48Speaker 1: To make you two happy if I was to starve.
- 10:51Speaker 4: All right, get back away from this cell door. All right, Chester,
- 10:59Speaker 4: set it aside. I can smell that stuff clear over here.
- 11:04Speaker 10: Well, go ahead.
- 11:05Speaker 8: Tomorrow night, I'm.
- 11:06Speaker 6: Going to cook you grits. Tomorrow night, I may not
- 11:09Speaker 6: be here.
- 11:09Speaker 4: All right, Chester, come on.
- 11:12Speaker 5: You'll be here a race until the day you stand trial.
- 11:16Speaker 4: And then my brother will have something to say about that.
- 11:18Speaker 8: Oh?
- 11:19Speaker 4: Well, he's had plenty of time to say it. What's
- 11:21Speaker 4: keeping him?
- 11:21Speaker 6: He'll be here.
- 11:22Speaker 4: Don't worry. Before we leave.
- 11:26Speaker 10: Town, we're going to get to you, Marshal.
- 11:28Speaker 4: You do that, Race. Come on, Chester.
- 11:31Speaker 8: You'll find out.
- 11:32Speaker 4: This way.
- 11:34Speaker 6: I need to tell you that's the honest you and
- 11:39Speaker 6: me not ever seen.
- 11:39Speaker 8: Yeah. Marshal? Huh?
- 11:47Speaker 4: Hey, come on in. What's the matter, Joe?
- 11:52Speaker 10: Marshal, I ought to make you pay the loss yourself.
- 11:55Speaker 4: What are you talking about?
- 11:56Speaker 7: That galled-down card shop he got me to take on,
- 11:58Speaker 7: he's gone.
- 11:59Speaker 8: What?
- 12:00Speaker 10: Took every cent out of the till along with him.
- 12:02Speaker 10: Lord knows where he is by now.
- 12:05Speaker 4: I got a pretty good idea of where he is, Joe.
- 12:07Speaker 4: And I wish I didn't.
- 12:20Speaker 3: Here, Matt.
- 12:22Speaker 6: Open it up down there by.
- 12:24Speaker 8: The end of the bar.
- 12:25Speaker 10: I see him.
- 12:31Speaker 7: He had had a few drinks before he came in,
- 12:33Speaker 7: and he's had more since.
- 12:35Speaker 10: But where'd he get the money, Matt?
- 12:37Speaker 9: Stole it.
- 12:38Speaker 10: Huh?
- 12:39Speaker 8: From Joe Carty.
- 12:40Speaker 10: Oh, no.
- 12:41Speaker 4: After you got him the job?
- 12:43Speaker 5: Well, I should have known better, I guess, but I
- 12:45Speaker 5: hate to see a man down and out pushed against
- 12:47Speaker 5: a wall.
- 12:48Speaker 10: I'm sorry, Matt.
- 12:50Speaker 11: Well, I'll see you in a minute.
- 12:54Speaker 8: A toast, gentlemen.
- 12:56Speaker 11: A toast to the royal blood of the House of Barleycorn.
- 13:02Speaker 3: Barleycorn.
- 13:05Speaker 7: All right, boys.
- 13:06Speaker 1: All right.
- 13:07Speaker 3: I'm sorry.
- 13:07Speaker 4: Edward, the party's over.
- 13:09Speaker 8: Oh, dear me. The sheriff of Nottingham. Yes, indeed.
- 13:14Speaker 4: Come on, let's go.
- 13:15Speaker 8: No, wait, Marshal.
- 13:16Speaker 11: What? This is merely a natural misunderstanding which I can.
- 13:20Speaker 6: Explain quite easily if you.
- 13:22Speaker 8: Will only permit me. Don't bother.
- 13:25Speaker 11: But I feel it's the least I can do under
- 13:27Speaker 11: the circumstances.
- 13:28Speaker 8: Of only one moment, Marshal, if you will listen to me.
- 13:32Speaker 8: All right, let's hear it.
- 13:36Speaker 11: I accepted my menial role this morning with proper humility, Marshal,
- 13:41Speaker 11: and throughout the long day I labored diligently and conscientiously... gratefully, lovely. Then,
- 13:49Speaker 11: as eventide drew nigh, in Master Carpe's cupboard, I.
- 13:55Speaker 8: Found a bottle.
- 13:56Speaker 4: So?
- 13:56Speaker 8: I looked, I sniffed, I tasted, I imbibed.
- 14:02Speaker 6: And morality and ethics.
- 14:04Speaker 8: Were flung through the wind. As I warn you, drink
- 14:08Speaker 8: is my weakness.
- 14:09Speaker 4: On an empty stomach, so you said.
- 14:12Speaker 11: I neglected to add that a precisely similar effect occurs
- 14:16Speaker 11: on a full stomach.
- 14:19Speaker 8: I'm sorry, Marshal.
- 14:20Speaker 4: Come on, let's go.
- 14:21Speaker 8: No, no, wait, wait.
- 14:24Speaker 12: I was quite sincere this morning when I promised not
- 14:27Speaker 12: to fail your trust, Marshal.
- 14:30Speaker 8: Nonetheless, I did fail it.
- 14:32Speaker 4: There is no excuse, of course.
- 14:36Speaker 11: I suppose that I really should face the fact that
- 14:40Speaker 11: I am just a bit on the worthless side.
- 14:44Speaker 4: I'm inclined to agree with you, Edmund.
- 14:46Speaker 7: Mr.
- 14:46Speaker 11: Dillon?
- 14:47Speaker 8: Yeah, what is it, Chester?
- 14:48Speaker 6: Just a few minutes ago, Mr. Dillon, three different people
- 14:50Speaker 6: seen him down by the depot.
- 14:52Speaker 8: Who? Brad Tyler.
- 14:53Speaker 6: He's here, all right.
- 14:56Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 15:14Speaker 8: What?
- 15:17Speaker 10: Who is it?
- 15:19Speaker 8: It's me.
- 15:21Speaker 4: Oh. Hello, Doc.
- 15:25Speaker 5: Can't you find any place to loaf except in front
- 15:27Speaker 5: of the jail?
- 15:28Speaker 7: Well, with you and Brad Kyle around the prowl for
- 15:31Speaker 7: each other, I figure I might as well just wait
- 15:33Speaker 7: right here until one of you need it.
- 15:35Speaker 4: You're wasting your time, Doc.
- 15:37Speaker 5: I can't find a hide or.
- 15:38Speaker 10: Hair of him. He's here in town somewhere. Folks have
- 15:41Speaker 10: seen him.
- 15:41Speaker 4: I'm not one of them, though.
- 15:43Speaker 8: Come on in.
- 15:48Speaker 4: Chester.
- 15:49Speaker 10: Has he got it locked?
- 15:50Speaker 4: Yeah, I guess so. Chester.
- 15:53Speaker 6: Who is it?
- 15:54Speaker 4: It's me, Chester.
- 15:55Speaker 8: Open up.
- 15:56Speaker 11: Oh.
- 15:56Speaker 8: All right.
- 15:58Speaker 6: Just a minute.
- 16:06Speaker 8: Hello, Doc. Yeah, Chester.
- 16:08Speaker 6: Sure am glad to see you, Mr.
- 16:09Speaker 10: Jones.
- 16:10Speaker 2: I've been sitting here with this rifle and jumping out
- 16:12Speaker 2: of my skin every time an owl hooted.
- 16:14Speaker 10: There are no owls this time of year, Chester.
- 16:17Speaker 6: Well, I know that, Doc. It's just kind of the.
- 16:21Speaker 10: Well.
- 16:23Speaker 6: I'm Brad Collier, Mr.
- 16:24Speaker 8: Dillon.
- 16:25Speaker 4: I'm not a sign of it.
- 16:26Speaker 6: Grace Collier's been yelling for the last 15 minutes. He
- 16:29Speaker 6: wants to see you when you come in.
- 16:30Speaker 10: Well.
- 16:31Speaker 6: Man, a poor old actor fella ain't had much to say.
- 16:33Speaker 6: He just sits there in his cell, looks at the floor.
- 16:36Speaker 6: I think he's feeling real remorseful for letting you down.
- 16:39Speaker 4: Yeah, well, he should have thought of that before he
- 16:40Speaker 4: stole the money.
- 16:41Speaker 6: That's right, I know. But I still think it's bothering
- 16:43Speaker 6: him considerable.
- 16:44Speaker 8: Chester!
