- 0:00Speaker 1: Back here in the Yukon Football Coaches Show, Bob Joyce
- 0:02Speaker 1: filling in for Mike Crispino, who, of course is with
- 0:04Speaker 1: the men in Hawaii. We've got Yukon football this weekend
- 0:07Speaker 1: against you massive been amherst Our. Pregame coverage starts at
- 0:10Speaker 1: ten to thirty. I'll have the hard outed group count
- 0:12Speaker 1: down to kickoff, and then it's Mike, Winn and Adam
- 0:14Speaker 1: from a girk Stadium shortly after twelve noon.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Let's shift gears a little bit.
- 0:19Speaker 1: The job that Gordy Samus has done, not only as
- 0:22Speaker 1: the offensive line coach, where he's been your offensive line
- 0:24Speaker 1: coach since you got here, but now he's in his
- 0:27Speaker 1: first year as the offensive coordinator.
- 0:29Speaker 2: But we'll get to that part in a minute.
- 0:30Speaker 1: The job that he continues to do on the O line, Jim,
- 0:33Speaker 1: because when the season began, the interior obviously needed some
- 0:37Speaker 1: work because you had three people that were no longer
- 0:40Speaker 1: there and you had to mix and match. I think
- 0:42Speaker 1: Gordy's done a fantastic job with that. Now with the injuries,
- 0:45Speaker 1: other guys have stepped up. I mean, you can't speak
- 0:48Speaker 1: enough about what he's done alone with the offensive line
- 0:51Speaker 1: and how those guys have accepted their roles. I know
- 0:54Speaker 1: Chris Fortin has even had to move around a little
- 0:56Speaker 1: bit in the offensive line because of injuries.
- 0:58Speaker 3: Yeah, we've had to shuffle the deck and uh, you.
- 1:01Speaker 4: Know when we lost Ban and then Brady and then
- 1:04Speaker 4: as you know, Wes has been in and out of
- 1:08Speaker 4: the lineup. And I just think it's a credit to
- 1:10Speaker 4: the Gordy and all those guys. That's a really tight
- 1:14Speaker 4: knit group. They work really hard, they work well together,
- 1:19Speaker 4: they cross train for positions. Gordy's incredibly demanding, you know,
- 1:24Speaker 4: being the coordinator and then having that massive responsibility along
- 1:27Speaker 4: with coaching the offensive line.
- 1:29Speaker 3: You know, it's it's uh, it's.
- 1:32Speaker 4: Demanding, it's not easy, it's top I think he's done
- 1:35Speaker 4: an outstanding job. And if you look at some of
- 1:38Speaker 4: the things that we've done statistically, and I'm not necessarily
- 1:41Speaker 4: a big stats guy, but there are some things that
- 1:43Speaker 4: I do look at. I'm impressed with the way we're
- 1:48Speaker 4: progressing on offense.
- 1:50Speaker 1: What about Gordie's evolving as an offensive coordinator? What have
- 1:54Speaker 1: you seen from the start of the season in the
- 1:57Speaker 1: now coming into game twelve, Has it changed much?
- 1:59Speaker 4: No, because it's always been at a high level. He's
- 2:03Speaker 4: he's incredibly smart. He knows what he wants to do,
- 2:07Speaker 4: he teaches it well. He studies opponents, he studies other
- 2:11Speaker 4: people around college football, pro football, you know, looking for
- 2:17Speaker 4: ideas that can help us. He communicates well with the players.
- 2:21Speaker 4: I think he's progressive and it's thinking, we don't get
- 2:23Speaker 4: stale on offense. You know, we stick to concepts that
- 2:26Speaker 4: we're good at, but we always have wrinkles that we need.
- 2:31Speaker 4: And I just think he's you know, he relates well
- 2:33Speaker 4: to the players, and I think people respond to him.
- 2:35Speaker 4: And I've been incredibly, incredibly impressed with what he's been
- 2:38Speaker 4: able to do.
- 2:39Speaker 1: I went to practice on Thursday getting ready because I
- 2:41Speaker 1: did the game, of course against Sarahcuse, and you know,
- 2:44Speaker 1: you always kind of see what's going on. Now every
- 2:46Speaker 1: team does this. They practice trick plays in practice. But
- 2:49Speaker 1: the question is when do you use them or if
- 2:51Speaker 1: you use them? What's your philosophy been like? Now, I
- 2:55Speaker 1: grew up a Giants fan like Mike in the eighties,
- 2:57Speaker 1: where Bill Parcells would roll the dice whenever he needs to.
- 3:00Speaker 2: But what is your thoughts on that? When do you
- 3:02Speaker 2: use them or if you use them?
- 3:05Speaker 3: Well, you use them.
- 3:06Speaker 4: If the opportunity you want to have things, but you
- 3:09Speaker 4: don't just do it to do it right, you know.
- 3:12Speaker 4: You if the opportunity presents itself, then you want to
- 3:17Speaker 4: be ready to do it, you know.
- 3:18Speaker 3: But you got to have a certain look. The situation's
- 3:21Speaker 3: got to be right.
- 3:21Speaker 4: You have to work on it constantly so that if
- 3:24Speaker 4: the situation presents itself, then then you pull it out
- 3:27Speaker 4: and you use it, you know. But it's all about
- 3:29Speaker 4: the situation being right.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Back to the offensive line for a moment.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Two honors for your tackles, Valentin sent and Chase Lunt,
- 3:37Speaker 1: who guys that were here when you got here, have developed,
- 3:41Speaker 1: matured and now they're going to college All Star games.
- 3:44Speaker 2: Obviously a lot of hard work.
- 3:46Speaker 1: I know Chase Lunt was thrown to the fire when
- 3:49Speaker 1: he was a skinny freshman offensive lineman to the guy
- 3:53Speaker 1: that he is today.
- 3:53Speaker 2: You've got to be pretty proud of what these two
- 3:55Speaker 2: have done.
- 3:56Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean they're amazing.
- 3:57Speaker 4: They just their consistency, their leadership, their attitude, their work ethic,
- 4:05Speaker 4: the way they hold themselves to a high level of
- 4:07Speaker 4: accountability and those around them. I mean, they're awesome. They
- 4:10Speaker 4: are just freaking awesome. And love them to death. I'm
- 4:14Speaker 4: going to miss them and you know, be pulling form
- 4:16Speaker 4: the rest of their lives. I mean, I love them,
- 4:19Speaker 4: love them to death. They're both really good players. I
- 4:20Speaker 4: think they'll both keep playing on Saturday on Sundays.
- 4:24Speaker 1: So what's Chase like in the meeting room? I understand
- 4:28Speaker 1: he's one of your go to guys.
- 4:29Speaker 4: He so, you know, you're in a meeting and as
- 4:32Speaker 4: you're up there talking, you always wonder am I getting
- 4:34Speaker 4: through to these guys?
- 4:36Speaker 3: You know?
- 4:36Speaker 4: Are they hearing what I'm saying? Is the message? You know, succaint?
- 4:40Speaker 4: Is it making sense? And all you have to do
- 4:43Speaker 4: for reaffirmation is look at Chase and he's giving the
- 4:45Speaker 4: head nod, you know. So you know, when I start talking,
- 4:48Speaker 4: or any other coach starts talking, the first thing you
- 4:51Speaker 4: see Chase and Val and other guys do start they
- 4:54Speaker 4: pull out their notebooks and they start taking notes, you know,
- 4:56Speaker 4: and that's not always common anymore, you know, in the
- 4:59Speaker 4: digital but these guys are writing stuff down and I
- 5:02Speaker 4: just couldn't appreciate him any more than I do.
- 5:05Speaker 1: Let's stay with the offensive linement at the tight end spot.
- 5:08Speaker 1: You told me on a Thursday, when did our pregame interview.
- 5:12Speaker 1: That's the one spot that's been ravaged by injuries. You
- 5:15Speaker 1: got to bring in Dominic Toy, who has seen a
- 5:17Speaker 1: lot of significance, snaps lutely, John Bechtel. Now even Tank Green,
- 5:21Speaker 1: one of the backup offensive linemen, is now wearing a
- 5:25Speaker 1: tight end number in the game.
- 5:27Speaker 2: The importance of those.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Three guys alone to accentuate what Lewis Hanson's doing and
- 5:31Speaker 1: just the jobs that they're filling because of the injuries
- 5:34Speaker 1: that you have.
- 5:35Speaker 2: What's been the what have you been pleased by these
- 5:37Speaker 2: three guys?
- 5:38Speaker 4: And we've had to make a lot of adjustments, as
- 5:40Speaker 4: you said, just because of you know, the injuries. I
- 5:45Speaker 4: mean we lost I mean, I think four guys to
- 5:48Speaker 4: knee injuries, you know, and some good players. But it's
- 5:52Speaker 4: given dom Toy a chance to develop. We really like him.
- 5:56Speaker 4: We think he's a really good player.
- 5:59Speaker 3: You know.
- 5:59Speaker 4: I think Blu has had to just you know, kind
- 6:01Speaker 4: of expand his role. We've used Ezraah Anderson as a
- 6:04Speaker 4: tied end. Now, John Bechtel's playing more. Uh, you know,
- 6:10Speaker 4: Alex Honigs kind of expanded. He didn't play last week,
- 6:15Speaker 4: but he's good to go now. I think Christian Pace
- 6:18Speaker 4: has just done a really good job of creating roles
- 6:20Speaker 4: for all those guys and shuffling the deck as we've
- 6:23Speaker 4: had injuries. And you know, I'm pleased with that position.
- 6:26Speaker 4: I can't wait to get everyone back and healthy, you know,
- 6:29Speaker 4: and all playing again, because it's a position that we
- 6:32Speaker 4: put a lot of value in.
- 6:33Speaker 3: We think it's a tough position to defend, and uh.
- 6:36Speaker 4: We need we need the we need the ability to
- 6:40Speaker 4: put different guys in there and create problems for defense.
- 6:43Speaker 1: Now, if I'm not mistaken, at one point, Bechtel was
- 6:45Speaker 1: a walk on, and I'm you always hear these stories
- 6:48Speaker 1: across the country of the development of a kid who
- 6:50Speaker 1: walks on, gets a scholarship and then does something well
- 6:54Speaker 1: for himself. What can you speak of those type of guys, Jim,
- 6:57Speaker 1: I'm sure you've had a few during your days.
- 6:59Speaker 3: Well, I was one.
- 7:00Speaker 4: I mean I walked on at University Washington and earned
- 7:02Speaker 4: a scholarship, you know, the spring of my freshman year.
- 7:05Speaker 4: So I have a lot of respect for those guys
- 7:07Speaker 4: that have the faith in themselves to go walk on it.
- 7:10Speaker 4: It's a tough road, it's a long road, it's it's
- 7:13Speaker 4: not easy. Oftentimes you're overlooked, underappreciated.
- 7:17Speaker 3: It takes a.
- 7:18Speaker 4: Lot of self confidence and gumption. It takes a lot
- 7:20Speaker 4: of resilience to to kind of overcome feeling, like I said,
- 7:26Speaker 4: overlooked and underappreciated. So I'm always looking for those guys
- 7:30Speaker 4: that exhibit those traits that you know spell success, it
- 7:34Speaker 4: looks like it can lead to success. And John's one
- 7:37Speaker 4: of those guys. It's evident every day in the way
- 7:39Speaker 4: he works, in his attitude, and the type of teammate
- 7:42Speaker 4: he is, his selflessness. I just have a lot of
- 7:45Speaker 4: respect for John and the other guys on our team
- 7:47Speaker 4: that contribute his walk ons and contributing is a walk
- 7:50Speaker 4: on doesn't mean that you're on the field on Saturday.
- 7:52Speaker 4: I mean it's you know, you're oftentimes the selflessness of
- 7:56Speaker 4: going out and being on the scout team, you know,
- 7:59Speaker 4: and given the and its looks to our offense, our.
- 8:01Speaker 3: Defense, that's you know, that's not a lot of fun.
- 8:04Speaker 4: But they do it selflessly and with great energy and focus,
- 8:08Speaker 4: and they know how important they are to the success
- 8:11Speaker 4: of this team on Saturday, whether they're playing on Saturdays
- 8:13Speaker 4: or not.
- 8:14Speaker 1: All Right, more with Jim as the Ukon football coaches
- 8:17Speaker 1: show continues in just a minute here onlear Field.
- 8:19Speaker 3: Stay with us
