So how do I say 'nephew' in Amharic? Lucas: Good question! For 'nephew', we say የወንድም ልጅ. Literally, 'brother's child'. Listen: የወንድም ልጅ. Say it with me. Luna: የወንድም ልጅ. Ooh, that's a mouthful. የወንድም ልጅ. Lucas: Great! And for 'niece', we say የእህት ልጅ — 'sister's child'. Try it: የእህት ልጅ. Luna: የእህት ልጅ. That one feels a bit easier. So nephew is from a brother, niece is from a sister? Lucas: Exactly. You can also specify 'my' by adding the possessive. For 'my nephew', you'd say የወንድሜ ልጅ. Listen: የወንድሜ ልጅ. Luna: የወንድሜ ልጅ. So I'd say that if I'm talking about my brother's son? Lucas: Right. And for 'my niece', you say የእህቴ ልጅ. Try it: የእህቴ ልጅ. Luna: የእህቴ ልጅ. That's my sister's daughter. Got it. Can we practice with a little scene? Lucas: Sure! Let's say you're showing me a photo. You point and say: ይህ የወንድሜ ልጅ ነው — 'This is my nephew.' Repeat after me: ይህ የወንድሜ ልጅ ነው. Luna: ይህ የወንድሜ ልጅ ነው. And if it's a girl, I say ይህች የእህቴ ልጅ ናት? Lucas: Close! For a female, we use ይህች and ናት. So: ይህች የእህቴ ልጅ ናት. Try it. Luna: ይህች የእህቴ ልጅ ናት. Perfect! So ናት is 'she is'? Lucas: Yes. ነው for 'he is', ናት for 'she is'. So let's review: how do you say 'my nephew'? Luna: የወንድሜ ልጅ. Lucas: And 'my niece'? Luna: የእህቴ ልጅ. Lucas: You've got it! Let's do one more round.
